TOUGH WORK… Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton (right) thanked Parkes Shire Council staff for working in trying weather conditions over the summer on the Middle Trundle Road. Meeting Parliamentary Secretary Rick Colless (left) and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack (middle) were (L-R) Phil Clarke, Garry Abernethy, Tim Bolam, Todd Jayet, Toni Jobson and Craig Morgan.

Seal of Approval For Middle Trundle Road Upgrade

For over 50 years rural communities in the Parkes Shire have been asking for it and last Friday the upgrade and sealing of the Middle Trundle Road was officially opened. “It is a terrific day,” said Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton, who travels up to 1,000km per week between Tullamore and Parkes. “What a difference it makes to all of us.” Member for Riverina, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said good roads were vital to ensure productivity and efficiencies, and to ensure people get to their destinations sooner and safer. Middle Trundle Road is not only the most direct link from the Parkes Shire area to the Newell Highway, Mugincoble Silos and Central West Livestock Exchange, but it

also provides Trundle and Tullamore more direct access to the Parkes urban centre. For safety reasons, heavy vehicles often had to bypass Middle Trundle Road and instead pass through the village of Bogan Gate, adding 8km to each trip. The sealing of Middle Trundle Road cuts travel time by about 10 minutes in each direction, which will boost productivity and save transport costs for local businesses. Trundle resident Andrew Rawsthorne said the upgrade was very popular among residents. “It also means residents can now easily travel to Parkes for work instead of moving there. With all the new development projects in the shire and improved roads, people can now choose where they want to live.” By Maggi Barnard

OUR Bloke Col Lamrock How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I moved to Parkes about 20 years ago. It wasn’t until I got settled here that I became aware of the friendly nature of Parkes residents. My wife, Pam, moved here from Christchurch, New Zealand and she has found Parkes a very friendly place to live too. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I run Glassplace with the help of five other people. The best part of my job is the variety of work we undertake. No two jobs are the same and with the constant upgrades in Australian Standards, we are always on our toes keeping up with changes. What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? I just love growing vegies. We have 20 vegetable growing beds in our garden and I almost always have something ready for Pam (who is a great cook) to include in our next meal. My other great love is kayaking. What makes you proud? My wife makes me proud because she gave up her life in New Zealand so we could be together. For her every day is another adventure. I feel proud of my family members and my staff when they achieve a really good result with a new project. If you could be an animal which one would you choose and why? I would definitely be a dolphin. They can travel the world, go fishing anywhere they like without a licence, go surfing at all the best beaches and take a holiday from it all whenever they feel like it. Have you ever seen an unhappy dolphin? What is your all time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? Mark Knopfler and Graeme Conners are my favourite musicians. They are both great story tellers. Tell us about your best holiday. About 25 years ago I was made redundant from a job, and had a month before I was due to start my next position. So, it was off to New Zealand and four weeks travelling with no set aims.

THUMBS UP To Neil Unger, who had a major hand in the design and construction of the Parkes High School entry for the Birdman Rally. He was the driving force and source of inspiration to the students over five months of construction. He earned their respect and he guided them well during construction and test-flying.

There is no slowing down for local author Margaret Dwyer who says she “itches to write” and will keep on until she dies.

‘I will write till I die!’ Not many people get to celebrate their 90th birthday, let alone celebrate it with the launch of their fourth published book! Life has not slowed down for local author Margaret Dwyer when she left her family home in Elizabeth Street nine months ago to move into the retirement village at Southern Cross. She immediately started working on the sequel to her first fiction book, A Chain of Dreams, published in 2016 after so many readers had asked when she was going to write more. During the day Margaret has to keep a diary for her busy schedule attending VIEW Club meetings, playing the piano at the Southern Cross Village sing-a-longs and at

mass, and various medical appointments while still driving herself. “So, I write at night from 10pm to 2am when it is quiet and no one can interrupt me.” After only nine months she finished The Unbroken Chain bringing the O’Reagan family into the 21st century where marriage is no longer a given, living together is the norm, young adults live on the streets and drug use results in the escalation of crime. Margaret’s new book will be launched by Councillor Bill Jayet on 27th April at the Coachman Motor Inn at 2pm. Everyone is invited to see Margaret cut her 90th birthday cake at this auspicious event. QUESTION of the week fund, or to let the money stand as a donation. “It’s bitterly disappointing that the event is not going ahead,” said Brendon Argyle, Cancer Council community relations coordinator. Raffle tickets are still for sale and will be drawn by 1st April, winners will be contacted. Parkes Christian School may still run their mini relay on Friday, 22nd April.

The exhibition to introduce the huge variety of arts and crafts in the Parkes Community organised by Quota International was a huge success last weekend. Here is Fran Dixon showing their range of quilts.

What does the sealing of the Middle Trundle Road mean to you?

Lyn Edwards (Tullamore): It makes such a difference for our trips to Parkes and further in terms of timing and safety as it cuts the trip by about 15 minutes. We’ve been waiting for this to happen for 42 years.

Tim Sander (farmer living on the road): I did not think I would ever see it happen. We are very thankful for the road improvements and it is a significant improvement for animal welfare. There is now only a small section of unsealed road left to the Central West Livestock Exchange.

Vivienne Bolam (Tullamore): It felt marvellous the first time I travelled on it! I am on the Parkes Shire Council Roads Committee and it’s been on and off the agenda since 1964, so I am very happy. I never used it before as it was just unbearably painful.

Improvements for Parkes Aero Club

The Parkes Aero Club received good news from Member for Orange, Phil Donato MP, last Friday when he announced the club’s successful application for funding through the 2018 Community Building Partnership Program. “I’m thrilled to announce the Parkes Aero Club will receive $20,000 to enable them to build a new awning on the Clubhouse building,” Phil said. “The awning will provide year-round protection from the elements and give us an outdoor social space,” said Warwick Tom, public officer of the club.

Fiona Does A Brave Shave A Parkes resident took the bold step of shaving her hair last week by taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation. Fiona Mcgonigal, who lost a kidney through cancer last year, felt she wanted to give something back and decided to raise money by shaving off her hair. Fiona was well supported by her friends at Currajong Disability Services with Trilbie Bermingham taking charge of the clippers. “It felt really strange after all my hair came off, but I am now really happy with my new style.” She plans to let her hair grow back, as she

wants to do it again next year for the same cause. Fiona aims to raise at least $1,000 for her effort and is almost half way there. “The fundraising is going really well, and I’ve received a lot of support so far.” She would like more people to sponsor her so she can help to give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need. Donations would also help to fund vital research to help more people survive leukaemia, while improving their quality of life. Fiona’s page is still open for sponsorships on the World’s Greatest Shave website.

Push To Restore Clarinda Fountain Baroness Gardner of Parkes is the only Australian woman to date who has been elevated to the peerage, and only the second life peer who has taken a name from a place outside the United Kingdom. “It was a huge battle to get Parkes in her title and Trixie Gardner even had to get permission from the Queen,” said a representative of the Baroness who visited Parkes in January doing research for her autobiography to be published later this year. The Baroness is the daughter of Greg and Rachael McGirr and was born in Parkes as one of nine children. Her sister is Clarinda who died at a young age and the fountain in Cooke Park was erected in her memory. “The Baroness is very passionate about the Clarinda Fountain, and I am sad to report that it is not in a good state,” said the representative who preferred not to be named. She said it would be wonderful if it could be restored to coincide with the launch of the autobiography, as the McGirr family was so important to the history of Parkes. The family helped with the establishment of Memorial Hill and parts of Cooke Park. “There is this wonderful dichotomy of history in Cooke Park with the new statue of Elvis on the one side and the Clarinda

Fountain on the other. It would be great to have them match in stature with the fountain restored to its original state.” The representative said if the Baroness, who turns 92 in July, was fit enough she might travel to Parkes to launch her autobiography here. Trixie Gardner earned a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 1954 from the University of Sydney and moved to the UK in 1957. She was a councillor of Westminster City Council, Lady Mayoress (when her husband was Lord Mayor), in 1970 she stood for Parliament for the Conservative Party, and he was elected as a member of the Greater London Council (GLC).

Club spokesperson Marion McIntyre, and her husband Robert, who have been involved with the club for 30 years, said the committee was continually working to host events at the venue. “A new kitchen will be an important boon for catering purposes.” “This is the last remaining sporting venue in the community and our volunteers work very hard to keep it going,” she said. “With everything that has been happening with the drought we have welcomed this good news which will go a long way to reinvigorate everyone.” “The flat pack kitchen has already arrived so it is now just a matter of co-ordinating the tradesman, and we hope to have it functional in around four weeks.”

The Parkes Dragon Boat Club welcomed Member for Orange, Phil Donato MP to Lake Endeavour for the first time last Friday. He came with good news announcing the club had received two grants. “I am pleased to announce funding of $6,500 under the 2018 Community Building Partnership Program, and a further $1,640 under the 2018 Local Sport Grant Program,” Phil said. The larger grant will go towards two dragon boat trailers, and the second one will be used for the training and accreditation for the coaches. “It’s wonderful to see our dragon boating community continue to thrive, and it’s an honour to be able to support them in their endeavours. Sport is a vital part of our regional living that unites us all,” said Phil.

Welcoming Phil Donato MP to Lake Endeavour were Parkes Dragon Boat Club Committee members Deb Abela (treasurer), Beth Thomas (secretary) and Bill Thomas (president).
