Dazzling Debutante Ball

Last Saturday night the 49th Annual Canowindra Debutante Ball was held at the Canowindra Services Club. It was a wonderful night as the 11 Debutantes from Canowindra High School and their partners were presented to Mr Michael Harrison and Ms Bronwyn Porter. The Debutantes and their partners all looked stunning with some amazing dresses warn by the young ladies. The Debutantes were accompanied by the gorgeous Olivia McKenzie as Flower Girl and Jeremiah Tapim as Page Boy. “Congratulations to our Year 11 students and their partners who were involved in the Deb Ball on Saturday night – they looked amazing. It was a wonderful evening that

would not have been possible if not for the planning and hard work of our P&C, dance instructors, parents, Year 9 waitresses and the dedication of the debutante’s themselves,” said Canowindra High School Principal Neryle Smurthwaite. The Debutantes and their partners wowed the large crowd with their dancing, thanks to Mrs Kath Balcombe. A lovely meal was provided by the Canowindra Services Club and was served by Canowindra High School Year 9 students Kyra, Bridie, Letisha, Hayley, Amber and Lilly, who did a fantastic job. The band Nuthin’2 Serious had everyone up and dancing the night away. Their music was enjoyed by everyone.

Building relationships with the community will be one of the main priorities for Cabonne Council’s newly announced General Manager. Mr Brad Byrnes will commence duties on April 15, replacing Stephen Harding who retired late last year. He brings 31 years’ experience in the public sector, including the past 20 years in senior management positions. Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty said he was delighted to welcome Mr Byrnes to Cabonne. “Brad was appointed after an extensive recruitment and selection process, and the Council is excited about the contribution he will make to Cabonne’s future,” Cr Beatty said. Mr Byrnes comes to Cabonne from Parkes Shire Council where, as the Chief Operating Officer, he has been a member of the executive team and a key player in establishing that council’s strategic direction. Mr Byrnes considers his relationship building with the community as his most notable achievement in his 10 years at Parkes Council.

THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN

THUMBS DOWN To the people who let their dogs off on Canowindra Public School grounds after hours and don’t pick up after them! No dogs allowed at any time please.

“I believe that to be leaders in Local Government, it is important not to sit in your office and wait for the community to come to you,” he said. “I get great satisfaction in going out to communities and working with them in a more personal way. I like working to identify opportunities and solve problems to help communities achieve the projects they feel are important for their towns. “I’ve never been one to walk away from an issue regardless of how challenging that issue is.” Mr Byrnes said staff safety, workplace change and economic development were other key areas he will focus on. “With Cabonne being the ‘Food Bowl of Australia’ it is ideally placed to leverage off its agricultural base and increase farmers’ access to markets and more importantly their share of the benefits,” he said. Mr Byrnes has an extensive track record of implementing workplace change to a continuous improvement culture. “Councils should always be looking to provide services and manage the community’s assets in the most effective and productive way,” he said.

THUMBS DOWN To the person who dumped a dead Alpaca on Lockwood Rd 6 weeks after dumping a dead goat in the same spot.

THUMBS UP To everyone that helped at the High School after the break in last week!

Property Management Alisha Carlon and Jenny Fleming.

The largest property and livestock business in the Central Tablelands and Central West of NSW, Ray White Emms Mooney, has made major inroads into Cowra last week, acquiring the well-known LJ Hooker Cowra office. Director of Ray White Emms Mooney, Pat Bird, said that Ray White Emms Mooney has been established in Cowra for the past 9 years just a few doors up the road. They also have offices in Oberon, Molong, Blayney and Bathurst with a large livestock, rural and residential property team along with a large property management portfolio. “Cowra is a crucial market in the Central West – it’s a great community, with excellent growth prospects along with some of the best grazing and farming country in the region,” Mr Bird said. “We have some great agents in Cowra – Josh Keefe and Chris Daley specialising in Rural Sales along with Adam Gambrill specialising in Residential and Commercial Sales. Our team is now boosted with Caley Mok in Residential Sales along with Jenny Fleming and Alisha Carlon heading up our Property Management team, and of course our Sales Support and Office Administration is well covered with Suellen Grant and Leisha Haines continuing in their roles. EAT MORE VEGIES…Canowindra Public School took part in The Big Vegie Crunch last week.

Healthy Kids at The Big Vegie Crunch

Kids are great at eating all types of fruit but did you know that only around 5% of children in NSW eat enough vegetables each day. In an effort to change this statistic, Canowindra Public School took part in the The Big Vegie Crunch during Vegetable Week last Thursday 4th April at 10am. Vegetable Week and The Big Vegie Crunch is an annual health promotion event run in NSW primary schools in Term 1. The event is part of the Crunch & Sip NSW program and is funded by NSW Health. With delicious carrots, capsicum, lettuce and cucumber generously donated by Lawrences IGA, a small group of parents kindly volunteered their time to cut up the vegetables into separate cups for around 220 students at the school. “Thanks must go to the P&C and the parents and grandparents who have come here today to cut the vegetables up and deliver them to each classroom,” said Peta Laurie from Canowindra Public School.

As The Big Vegie Crunch took place you could hear all sorts of comments from the students “This is yummy” “I love capsicum!” and “Can we eat it yet?” This year the students from Canowindra Public School joined with tens of thousands of other primary school students from across NSW to all crunch on vegies at the same time and attempt to break the 2018 record. At the same time this experience will increase students’ knowledge, exposure and positive attitudes towards the vegetables. Katie Booth from the Healthy Kids Association, said “It is recommended that kids between the ages of 4 and 12 eat around five serves of vegies each day. There are a lot of reasons why so many kids are not eating enough – perhaps they don’t have access, they don’t like the taste, they get bored with the lack of variety, or they simply lack the knowledge to make good choices about food.”

EASTER SERVICES Maundy Thursday 18th April 6pm All Saints Anglican Church followed by a simple meal.

Amparo Gomez How long have you lived in or around Canowindra and what is the best thing about living here? 4.5 years ago we moved here from the Central Coast. We love the strong community values and are also impressed by so many great facilities for everyone. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? No work anymore, I am enjoying doing mosaics because of the creativity process of the work, doing something with my hands and imagination. What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Going to the markets and festivals around town, having family or friends over, going to the movies and keeping in touch with my family overseas. What makes you proud? To have the opportunity to help someone in need, just listening or giving a cuddle. If you could be an animal which one would you choose and why? A tiger as they are independent and strong, determined and persistent, a leader and an amazing creature. What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? Movie: Schindlers List - hope in mankind. Song: I believe I can fly - so romantic. Book: Anna Karenina - has everything to keep you reading. What is on your bucket list? Go back to my country Venezuela, Japan, Africa, Greece, Italy and Uluru. What are you really good at? I would say I’m a good organiser especially a trip, bills, home, my car – I don’t like mess! Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? Australia is the 5th country I have lived in. I like challenges and knowing different cultures.

CANOWINDRA PYTHONS RUGBY UNION

On Saturday the ladies team travelled to Orange to play Orange City coming away with a huge win 62-5. Amazing efforts from Alicia who scored the first try with her break away up the sideline. Betty Doolan showed City just how tough she was and not letting the hard hits stop her. Michelle was great talking in the forwards. Ash was constantly in the game and made a huge break up the wing to be brought down just short of the try line. Monique was fantastic at tackling. Adelaide showed us her soccer skills where she kicked the ball over the other side so try scoring machine Tarcia got yet another try. Chelsea showed the ladies her speed and once she got through City they couldn’t catch her, lots of tries to Chelsea. Hopefully the few injuries won’t affect the ladies this weekend when they play in Cowra against Forbes. By Adelaide Lawrence
