Former Canowindra resident Jayden Brown, or Browny as he is known, will shave off his locks that he has been growing for 4 years, today to raise money for little Ellie Wild!

"A Day For Ellie" Sparks Act Of Kindness

Former Canowindra resident and Tigers star Jayden Brown (Browny) has decided to shave his hair that he has been growing for the past four years to raise money for a family going through a hard time - The Wild Family. Adam and Rachelle Wild are the two most selfless people you will ever meet. Not only are they caring friends of Jayden and Sarah Brown, Adam was also the local family chiropractor for a few years. Adam went above and beyond for the Brown family on numerous occasions purely to help and to see a difference in their health. At the end of last year Ellie Wild was diagnosed with Leukaemia. A fundraiser ‘A Day For Ellie’ is being held in Canowindra on 2nd March 2019 and

as Jayden and Sarah can’t make it on the day Jayden is going to shave his head. For anyone who knows Jayden will understand this is a big deal! Jayden is shaving his head today (Thursday) in Mudgee however you can still donate to the GoFundMe page via www.gofundme.com/a-day-for-ellie ‘A Day for Ellie’ will be held at the Canowindra Golf Club and the golf is a 4 Man Ambrose. There will be a competition for Best Dressed Man, Lady and Team on the day and Ellie has said her favourite colours are Pink, Yellow, Blue and Purple and her favourite animal is a Giraffe so this is the theme for the day. LETTERS Dear Madam,

phone l (02) 6344 1846

I refer to Bob Sherwood's letter in today's Phoenix about how everything in regard to the Earth's climate is just fine and entropy. Bob presents so much misinformation I don't know where to start so I will stick with the easy target. He states that "research has shown that the edges of the Saharan... are receding". "Wow!" I thought when I read it, "Richard St. Barbe Baker and the Men of the Trees had a win" with their Saharan tree planting program. A quick Google revealed I was wrong in thinking that. In fact, all the recent scientific research reports I could locate indicate quite the contrary situation. One recent journal article* will be sufficient to illustrate the point. It's by a couple of research scientists at the University of Maryland. In it they state: "...the Sahara Desert has expanded significantly over the twentieth century, by 11%–18% depending on the season, and by 10% when defined using annual rainfall." In fact the only report to the contrary that I could find was in an issue of Forbes (a

The author was (and still is) the President of the "Spark of Freedom Foundation" and is not a scientist. Subsequently, Forbes has published reports detailing the scope of the worldwide desertification problem***. Mr Sherwood might well have access to material that I don't have. The challenge for him now is to document his argument and claims. Surveys calling for Canowindra and district residents, traders and community groups to show their support for the Canowindra Community Bank® Project have been with local people and businesses now for over a week and we are calling on all residents, if you have not completed this and it is still sitting on your kitchen bench, to please take the time to complete this and post it back to the consultants. Otherwise you can do this on line, following this link: http://www.afsbendigo.com.au/communitysurveys/ Supporters of the proposed Canowindra Community Bank® Project have just 8 days left to take part in the campaign’s community survey. Steering Committee Chair, Cheryl Newsom said, “Surveys would be accepted until the 22nd February when the confidential responses would then be compiled by an independent consultant.” Following on from the interviews with local people last Thursday the consultants had seen a large increase in the number of surveys returned. However, it is critical we get as many responses to this survey as possible and from a wide variety of respondents,” she said. “It is only with the full support of our community that our dream to have a locally-owned and operated bank here in Canowindra will come to fruition. Many people are still unaware that a good share of the profit of the Bank will be returned to local organisations, charities and sporting groups, so this is a real benefit to the town,” said Ms Newsom. The Steering Committee believe that the community does want the long-term benefits a Community Bank® branch can bring, however we need to back this up with official data to show that it will be viable. “In addition, the Bendigo Bank is one of the main five banks and quite unscathed by the Royal Commission into the Banking industry. They can offer all services including car loans, home loans, equipment loans, farm loans, residential mortgages, savings accounts, term deposits, so why not make that enquiry today to see how you can be involved.” “Time is of the essence, so make sure you show your support for this grassroots initiative today,” Cheryl said.

Canowindra Health Service is dedicated to helping everyone in the community. Sometimes this means supporting people who are well and healthy, or those who are looking after someone else. Canowindra Community Health staff are offering support for carers of people living with memory loss. Canowindra Primary Community Health Social Worker, Karen Ladlow said, “Caring for someone with memory loss can be a lonely and difficult experience which can leave people feeling isolated or helpless, but as the saying goes, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’”. It is well known that by talking to others who share a similar experience, people feel less alone, and more able to cope on those really hard days, and with the everyday. “This group offers education, time out, support and information for Carers of people with memory loss. A carer can be a family member, a friend or neighbour, or anyone involved in the lives of people with Memory Loss”. The group will be held at the Canowindra Community Health Centre in Ryall Street, from 10:00am to 12:00pm on the second Tuesday of every month starting 12th February 2019 and will wrap up in November 2019. Carers need to register by calling the Canowindra Community Health Centre on 6340 3300. Morning tea will be supplied for a gold coin donation. Canowindra Community Nurse, Ann Jones said, “If you’re still not sure or have worries you think don’t quite fit this group, ring the Canowindra Community Health Centre and ask to speak to the Social Worker, available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. I am here to help”.

A pool party and services expo at the Cowra Aquatic Centre on Wednesday 13 February with morning tea, BBQ lunch and entertainment all free to Senior’s card holders will kick off a jam-packed program of events for Cowra’s 2019 Seniors Festival. Local seniors are being encouraged to enjoy new experiences, continue learning and impart their skills, as part of the 2019 NSW Seniors Festival which will run for 12 days from Wednesday 13 February to Sunday 24 February 2019 across NSW. With the theme ‘Love your Life’, the festival celebrates older people in the community and encourages them to live active and connected lives “On a local level, the Cowra Seniors Festival covers a range of fun cultural, social, sporting and cinematic events, with something for everyone,” Cowra Mayor, Councillor Bill West said. “We’ve got some great events on the program, including barefoot bowls, a high tea, a free movie screening and craft workshops, along with the annual trivia challenge and seniors lunch — there will be something for everyone!” Cr West said. “Seniors are an increasingly-active and respected part of the community. This year’s Cowra Seniors Festival program will see our senior residents inspired to try new things, socialise, share skills and keep doing the things they enjoy, together,” Cr West continued. “The variety of activities wouldn’t be possible without the support of several local organisations — Cowra Senior Citizens Group, Cowra Special Needs Services, Cowra Information and Neighbourhood Centre, Cowra Art Group, Cowra Community Health, Cowra U3A, Cowra Services Club, Meals on Wheels, and Cowra Bowling Club all actively contribute to this program of events. “It’s a testament to Cowra’s community spirit to have such great partnerships that allow us to present this wonderful program of events,” Cr West concluded. So Many Great Seniors Festival Activities Planned At Moyne

There is a lot planned for this year’s NSW Seniors Festival at Moyne Aged Care Plus running from Sunday 17th – Saturday 23rd February 2019

• Sunday 17th February: Special guests, Les and Dot Pfieffer will conduct Chapel at 2pm in the Kanyana Centre at Moyne. Major Mark, the Moyne Chaplain, will accompany the hymns on the piano. Afternoon tea will be served following chapel. • Monday 18th February: Residents will travel to Eugowra for the Seniors Luncheon and Concert. This is an annual event and the Moyne residents look forward to it every year. • Tuesday 19th February: Weather permitting, residents will enjoy a stroll in the garden with opportunity to talk to the birds in the aviary. “Cheeky”, the Galah, might even talk back. Opportunity will be given to sit and chat in the garden as the chooks scratch in the leaf litter and we listen to the sounds of the wild birds. After morning tea we will have a sing-along with all the old songs. This activity is enjoyed by many residents and especially by Mrs Betty Lawrence. • Wednesday 20th February: During the morning Lorraine (one of our Recreational Activities Officers) will call Bingo. Many of our residents enjoy this fun game and it helps to keep the mind active. Winning a prize adds to the excitement. In the afternoon, Melissa, our senior Recreational Activities Officer, will present

WOW (World of Wellness) an interactive program of music, movement, and memory sharing. • Thursday 21st February: Weather permitting, residents will enjoy a stroll in the garden again before enjoying a fun day of games. Scrabble and snakes and ladders are old favourites but our residents also enjoy computer games on our new brain trainers. In the afternoon there will be a carpet bowls tournament. • Friday 22nd February: On Friday we will hold a Mad Hatter's Tea Party. If the weather cooperates we will be out in the

garden. If not the event will take place inside. Our residents will enjoy some special treats for morning tea while wearing the most outlandish hats. Music and fun for everyone! • Saturday 23rd February: After a busy week many of our residents will look forward to a quieter day on Saturday. As family members often come and visit, no formal activities are planned but Leanne, one of our Recreational Activities Officers, as well as our chaplain, Major Mark, will be onsite to talk with residents and provide activities and support as necessary.

OUR Gal Dianne (Di) Gill How long have you lived in or around Canowindra and what is the best thing about living here? We moved to Canowindra six years ago. Canowindra is a beautiful town and we are lucky we live in a great street with lovely neighbours. Finally I love all the coffee shops and art that I share when we have visitors. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I have a position with the Western NSW Local Health District as the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program Coordinator. I enjoy the diversity of the activities from education sessions, to craft days to sometimes just sitting and talking to people. What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Free time is often spent just catching up with the house work. Family are very important to me so I spend a lot of time communicating with them. What makes you proud? I am extremely proud of my three children and the way they have taken up their roles in society. Also, I love seeing positive outcomes when people have attended training or other sessions that I have run. If you could be an animal which one would you choose and why? Probably a meerkat, they are those cute little animals that sit back on their hind legs keeping an eye out on the family, friends and community it suits me. What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? I love musicals on screen or on the stage and cannot go past “Singing in the Rain” or “Grease” if they are on TV I have to watch them. What is on your bucket list? More travel, we have just bought a motor home so that we can visit more places in Australia. What are you really good at? I am told I am good at listening and talking in fact my husband says I can talk under water with a mouth full of marbles. I would also like to think I am good at being a friend. Tell us about your best holiday ever? We have been fortunate to do a lot of travel but the best holiday was a tour of Europe.

JUNIOR CRICKET Last Saturday Canowindra Services Club travelled to Grenfell and played the Grenfell Eels. Everyone played extremely well and there was a huge improvement on the field this week, with our sundries kept to a minimum. Some work needs to be done on our catching, however a much better game all round. Canowindra Services Club came away with the win 115 to 56. Running between wickets was much improved also. Player of the Week was Toby Fisher for his bowling effort and leadership on the field. The Canowindra Tyre Service team were due to play Cowra, however the field was deemed too wet by the home side. This weekend sees both teams playing in Canowindra. By Brendan Fliedner
