The Canowindra Phoenix team are still on cloud nine after taking out Best Business in Cabonne at Friday night’s Daroo Business Awards at Eat Your Greens in Eugowra.

After winning different categories in previous years, The Canowindra Phoenix beat the largest field of finalists in the history of the Daroos to take out the coveted major award.

The newspaper’s publisher Sarah Maynard accepted the trophy from Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty. “Thank you to my amazing team, family the readers and advertisers who make The Canowindra Phoenix possible each week,” said Mrs Maynard.

Awards chairman Bruce Buchanan said the 2018 Daroos had a record field of finalists and the largest crowd with 290 people attending this year’s presentation dinner.

Mr Buchanan praised the members of the

Eugowra Events and Tourism Association who did a spectacular job decorating the marquee during a wild dust storm.

Canowindra Pre-School took out Best Ongoing Business, Eddy’s of Canowindra won Excellence in Accommodation, Ian Simpson and Co was awarded Highly Commended in Best New Business, Coco Harvest Canowindra took out Excellence in Marketing, Advertising and Communications and the Canowindra Balloon Festival won Excellence in Tourism Business with a Highly Commended awarded to The Age of Fishes Museum. The winner of the newest award Business Fostering Disability Inclusion went to The Age of Fishes Museum.

Do you want to have fun and improve your fitness? From 12 November on offer is aqua fitness at the Canowindra swimming pool.

Acting Community Health Manager, Ashley Wright said, “Exercises in the water are easier to do and less stressful on the joints”. We will be running an hour session, which involves walking in the water, specific exercises for joints, aerobic exercises and cool down stretches”.

It is important that the community know you do not need to be able to swim to take part in the classes.

Physiotherapy Aide Angela Ellis said, “The aqua fitness classes over the past number of years have been a lot of fun, and participants felt their fitness and energy levels improved. There is increasing evidence about the benefits of physical activity. Exercising regularly reduces the risk of heart disease and strokes, improves muscle strength and balance, and helps with weight control, diabetes and high blood pressure. Above all, it

The aqua fitness classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.00am to 10.00am from 12th November. The classes are for adult men and women, with newcomers welcome to attend.

The cost is $4.20 for pool entry unless you have a season ticket. You can register by calling into the Physiotherapy Department prior to the 12th November.

Some participants may need medical clearance before they can participate in the classes, so register early to ensure you don’t miss out on any sessions. Handover Ceremony: The Canowindra Historical Society will hand back searchlights to the Cowra Breakout Association on Tuesday 13 November at 1.30pm at the Canowindra Historical Museum. When the Cowra POW camp was dismantled at the end of WW2, two of the large searchlights were obtained by Canowindra Showground. Some years later these lights were deemed no longer useful and were given to the Historical Museum, where they have rested unnoticed in storage. A recent visitor noticed them, asked some questions, began some research and identified them.

Garden Club Donates To New Patient Lounge The Canowindra Garden Club were so proud to present the Canowindra Hospital Auxiliary on Monday a cheque for $10,000 to go towards the new patient lounge area.

The Garden Club raised the funds at the Spring Garden Event held at Noojee Lea Homestead last month. Carolyn Wythes, Garden Club President thanked Mr and Mrs Curran and the entire district for coming along and supporting this event.

Old Vic Inn Celebrating 110 Years

The Old Vic Inn are delighted to be celebrating their 110th Birthday next weekend and invite the community to come along and celebrate at the 110 Year Dinner on Saturday 17th November.

The current owners Graeme and Alison Beasley have provided this short history on The Old Vic Inn. Formerly the Victoria Hotel first built as a weatherboard pub in 1865, ownership passed to Mr Boyd and a new double story brick building was erected in 1908 anticipating the boom to come with the opening of the railway to Canowindra in 1910.

After this the 1865 weatherboard pub was demolished to make way for further brick extensions. For many years from 1969 to 1995 the Victoria Hotel became the Canowindra Convalescent Hospital.

The building has now returned almost to its original use, having 15 rooms all with their own bathrooms plus a 60-80 seat restaurant with a licensed bar serving beer on tap plus a large selection of very good local

wines.

The Beasley family wish to extend an invitation to all to come and celebrate 110 years of this dominant brick building in our street scape on Saturday 17th November. There will be a 3 course meal on offer for $45 per person. The menu includes the following reflecting the eras of the building: To start fresh damper and butter, entrees include home made terrine with tomato relish, twice cooked pork belly and mushroom and olive tapenade served on crusty bread.

For main there will be a choice between slow roasted beef striploin served with hasselback potatoes and seasonal vegetables, oven baked chicken breast served with asparagus and dill sauce or Cowra lamb served with creamy mash and vegetables.

For dessert their will be amazing syrup dumplings, Grandma Earle’s lemon delicious pudding or rhubarb and apple crumble.

The Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch in conjunction with Canowindra High School will be holding a Remembrance Day Service in Memorial Park at 10.30am this Sunday 11th November 2018.

At 5am on the morning of November 11, 1918 an armistice was signed in a railroad car park in a French forest near the front lines.

The terms of the agreement called for the cessation of fighting along the entire Western Front to begin at precisely 11am on 11th November. After over four years of bloody conflict, the Great War was at an end.

From an Australian population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of whom more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed or taken prisoner.

To commemorate the 100 year anniversary, Gaskill Street is decorated with red poppies which have become a symbol of remembrance.

The Canowindra Soldiers Memorial Hospital was built in 1921 as a memorial to the brave men from the Canowindra district who answered the call to fight, this is why the foyer is home to 2 marble honour rolls bearing in gold the names of the 260 men who volunteered to serve in the Great War, 60 of whom made the supreme sacrifice.

To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the armistice and to acknowledge the importance of the hospital as a memorial, the Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch are creating a new seated area in the grounds of the hospital which will be officially opened at 11.30am on Sunday 11th November 2018.

How long have you lived in or around Canowindra and what do you like about living here? I moved from Bermagui to Canowindra nearly two years ago. It was a top move but I do miss the salt water fishing.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I am a retired teacher of PE and Special Education. I do some private tutoring in Maths and English and I coach soccer, weightlifting and powerlifting. I like to see people move better and achieve their goals in sport and school.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I like catching cod in the Belubula and knocking off the cryptic crossword at Delice. But not Friday’s puzzle – the Friday cryptic is always bizarre, obtuse and obscure and I have to cheat with google to get Friday’s.

What are you really good at? I like to sit and write some lines, tie them together with some rhymes, but who decides if I’m ok, It’s up to you to say.

What is your pet hate? It is a tie between magpie swooping season and trying to rhyme with Canowindra.

If you could have a super power what would it be and why? To talk to magpies and ask them why they don’t like me.

What makes your day? The sun comes up, I’m breathing and I bench-press the same as the young fellas, Nick and Greg – now that is a good day!

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? I had the breaststroke record with Canowindra Swim Club for two weeks until Matt Rice beat me severely.

Last Sunday Canowindra Bowling Club presented live music performed by Matt Arthur. A large crowd was in attendance.

Canowindra Tyre Service Junior Cricket Team ready to play on Saturday.

JUNIOR CRICKET Saturday was the first game of the season for the Canowindra Tyre Service Stage 2 side. Taking on the Grenfell Eels on their home ground. Having lost the toss, our batsman applied themselves to the task by valuing their wicket. We posted a competitive total of 3/67 off 20 overs. The bowlers started well with several early wickets but a high number of sundries hurt our cause and our opposition were able to post a winning total of 4/105 of their overs.

There were several players having their first game of cricket and all contributed with either bat, ball or in the field enjoying the game. Mitchell Cartwright showed great potential and was awarded the Player of the Day, while Mitch S, Marcus, Jack and Fraser all contributed well.

By Oli Wythes This week the Services Club Team played the Cowra Thunder in Cowra. Darius Carpenter was the captain this week calling tails at the toss of the coin but was unsuccessful and the Thunder chose to bat. The Thunders have some very good batsman and piled on 2/92 off their 20 overs. Our bowlers were taken on by the Thunders batsman but all of the bowlers competed hard to keep the runs down.

Kynan Fliedner was great at wicket keeper displaying good glove work around the stumps, he took some bullet like throws from Bailey Kennedy from the deep that almost resulted in a few run outs. The whole team fielded well, cutting down the scoring opportunities and also forced 2 very good run outs.

Bailey Kennedy and Toby Fisher opened the batting and were able to see off their best 2 bowlers, putting the side in a good

position. Hayden Whatman had a great innings scoring 28 (retired not out) and was well supported by Toby, Nellie and Kynan.

The kids finished the innings at 6/75 falling 18 runs short of the victory. Player of the week was Hayden Whatman for an allround performance.

It was a big week for Gooloogong Public School as their 4x100m Relay team travelled down to Sydney’s Olympic Park Athletic Centre for the PSSA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS. After recently representing Cowra small schools at the Dubbo carnival the boys were now representing Wester Region at the State championships The boys started the day well with a personal best time in the mornings heats to progress through to the semi-finals. The boys finished 2nd in their semi-final to qualify 3rd fastest overall going into the afternoons 9 team final. The boys finished a very close 4th in the final, missing out on a bronze medal & a place on the podium by just 0.03 seconds.

MEN’S BOWLS Last Saturday a Consistency Singles match was played with Paul Markcrow against Pete McVicker. Unfortunately for Pete, he broke down during the second half of the game and had to retire awarding the game to Paul.

Last Sunday three O'Brien Cup matches were played. Bruce Webb and Steve Fisher played Westy Wyburn and Tot Fisher.

Westy and Tot led throughout the game winning 34-21. Garry Fairley and Ron Symons played Tony Tuimauga and Paul Markcrow.

After 11 ends the scores were close being 27-24 in favour of Garry and Ron. Garry and Ron kept their lead for the rest of the game winning 42-26. Barney Robson and Crock Watt had a comfortable win against Vinnie Mirto and Dave Sargent.

Friday November 9 - Be sure to be at the club by 5.30pm if you wish to participate in the novelty event worth a jackpot in excess of $650. This will be followed by twilight barefoot bowls being turn around mixed triples. Names in by 5.30pm for 6pm start.

One game of 15 ends.

Saturday November 10 - Ron "Gunner" Lynch Memorial Mixed Triples Tournament.
