Canowindra Show Crop Winners Announced

The Canowindra Show Crop Competition award night sponsored by Rabo Bank was held last Tuesday 20th March at the Canowindra Services Club for entries that went into the 2017 Canowindra Show.

Approximately 8 farming operations entered the competition where they were judged on crop management, yield and potential yield, water use efficiency and crop rotation. All crops were judged by Frank McRae and Phil Cranney this year with some strong results.

“Some of the crop yields were phenomenal considering the very dry winter we experienced with such little in crop rainfall received last year,” said Les Robson, Crop Competition Organiser.

Brad Howard from Hassad Australia won first place in the wheat section with the Coolah variety grown at “The Pines” Canowindra with the crop yielding 6.2 tonnes per hectare. Second place was Stuart Tait with his wheat from Billimari.

First in the Canola section was Stuart McDonald from “Belmont” Canowindra with second place going to Sam Gavin with his Canola from the Binni Creek Rd. Les would like to see some younger farmers get involved in the competition for this year so if your farming operation is within a 20km radius of Canowindra and want any further information give Les a call on 0429 070 686.

Thank you very much for putting our request into Snippets two weeks ago.

One never knows what can be discovered about our town, especially if a request for information is able to be circulated.

I had a response from six people via email, two phone calls and several people “in the street” – so to speak. This is an excellent result and even better because they all told the same story. I just have to follow up on the name of one man – Alby Dean.

Indeed there was a “Zoo“ on the western side of the tennis courts and viewable to the public from the oval side. The stone wall still standing is the remains of the emu house.

People remember a high fence enclosing animals such as kangaroos, emus, goats and birds of various kinds peacocks, ducks, guinea fowls and parrots.

I believe it was started by Mr Lorne Langford who worked for Boree Council and was also the caretaker for Morris Park. It operated from the late 1940’s to the early 1960’s.

All these exact dates etc. have yet to be substantiated but this is the outline that seems to have general agreement. Dawn

Langford has access to a photo and she will also write down her memories as Mr Langford was her father-in law.

I am in the process of compiling the information for our Historical Society Archives which, together with Dawn’s information will be a valuable asset to our local history records.

Our grateful thanks must go to those people who supplied answers to the query.

Thank you especially to the Phoenix for publishing our request. It proved a most effective way to obtain this information and at least three replies were from folk who lived far from Canowindra but had grown up here and remembered ‘’the Zoo’’as children.

Canowindra Challenge Flying Higher

The Canowindra International Balloon Challenge was launched on Tuesday at the Canowindra Showground to local media.

Student leaders from Canowindra Public School and Principal Sharon Hawker attended along with Duke of Edinburgh students from the Canowindra High School who will be involved in this year’s event helping the target teams.

With only one month to go until this year’s event the Canowindra Challenge committee are very excited to reveal some new additions to this year’s event. The Cabonne Country Balloon Glow this year will move across the road to the Canowindra Showground allowing the committee to expand the program. The Wine, Food and Craft Market will kick off at 4pm, followed by dancing by local dance groups. The Pilots will be on Parade from 5.40pm followed by Amitie and then the Balloon Glow starting at 7pm. The Peter Byrne – Forever Diamond Concert will start at 7.30pm with the evening wrapping up at 9.30pm.

There are 35 balloons registered so far for this year coming from around Australia, New Zealand, USA, France and England.

These entrants include the current World, Women’s World, Australian and French Champions.

The Canowindra International Balloon Challenge are very privileged to have engaged the services of Paul Petrehn from the USA as this year’s Balloon Director. Paul comes from the Balloon capital of the world Albuquerque, USA to the Balloon capital of Australia, Canowindra.

There will be four special shapes at the Balloon Glow this year and flying throughout Balloon week from 21-29th April. “Jewel” the Hummingbird will return to Canowindra along with Nudie. And new this year will be “Kermie” the Frog and the Little Red Heart.

Business Chamber Needs Support Now The Canowindra Business Chamber will hold their AGM on Monday 9th April at 7pm at the Canowindra Services Club after failing to reach the quorum number at last week’s meeting.

After the recent free publicity Canowindra has been given on both ABC Backroads and the Sydney Weekender programs now is the time for the business chamber to act and move forward.

The Canowindra Business Chamber is a not-for-profit member organisation representing a broad range of local businesses.

The Chamber represents the interests of its members, liaising at many levels, with-

in the community, and with government, campaigning to make Canowindra a better place to live, work and invest in.

The Business Chamber really need committed local businesses and associations to come forward and join the committee to drive Canowindra.

Participating in Chamber activities lets the businesses present a united voice for the town and capitalise on the many good things that are occurring and advance all local businesses.

The announcement on Monday securing the Corridor connecting the M7 to the Bells Line of Road at Kurrajong has the Mayors of Central NSW jumping for joy. It’s all go in Central NSW where it is clear that our voices are being heard,” Cr Medcalf said.

Calling All Knitters!

The Canowindra Wrap with Love group are calling for more knitters to join their group.

The group meet on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Canowindra HACC office at 10am in Gaskill St. There are millions of people world-wide suffering extreme cold. So in 1992 Wrap with Love began with the idea to help as many people as possible by providing warm wraps and blankets to ward off hypothermia. Since then, more than 414,000 people have been wrapped with love and warmth, in Australia and around the World.

The aid is delivered to needy countries, some experiencing extreme poverty or other natural disasters, some involved in war through the network of non-government aid organisations.

Wrap with Love is a not-for-profit organisation who reply solely on donations. Any donations of 8ply wool or 100% acrylic can be left at the HACC office at any time. Only last week a nice donation of wool was left at the office by someone from Orange.

The knitted squares for the wraps and blankets are made with 8ply wool and measure 10x10” or 25x25cm, with 28 assembled squares creating one whole warm wrap.

Last year the Canowindra group knitted 72 wraps and are hoping to make even more in 2018. It is a lovely morning catching up and having a chat with friends while knitting.

You will leave with improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness, benefits which have been shown to be maintained over time.

COMMUNITY HERITAGE GRANTS NOW OPEN Not-for-profit community organisations are encouraged to apply for funding through the Federal Government’s Community Heritage Grants Program.

GROUND-BREAKING FLU VACCINES TO PROTECT SENIORS IN CALARE

The Federal Government will provide two new groundbreaking flu vaccines to over 3 million Australians aged 65 years and over - free of charge.

The vaccines have been fast-tracked to ensure Australians over 65 years of age receive greater protection this flu season.

This measure is in response to last year’s horrific flu season.

We must continue to do all we can to protect those who are most at risk.

The new vaccines – Fluad® and Fluzone High Dose® – were registered in Australia to specifically provide increased protection for people aged 65 years and older.

Both vaccines will be available from April 2018. See your local doctor for details.

• Purchase of archival quality storage materials • Preservation training projects • Conservation activities, including cleaning, treatment or rebinding • Purchase and installation of environmental control and monitoring equipment • Copying of material once originals have been preserved • Cataloguing or collection management software Applications are now open and will close on Monday, 7 May 2018. RECORD MEDICARE BULK BILLING RATE A WIN FOR PATIENTS IN CALARE

More patients in Calare are seeing their doctor without paying a cent, with the national bulk-billing rate increasing to a record 85.8 per cent in the first half of the 2017–18 financial year.

This is the highest GP bulkbilling rate on record for the July to December period.

In Calare the bulk billing rate for patients visiting their GP is 86.7%. That’s higher than the national average.

This is a win for patients in Calare as Medicare has never been stronger.

In the 2017 Budget, the Australian Government established the Medicare Guarantee Fund to secure the ongoing funding of Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme – to guarantee Australians access to these services and affordable medicines into the future.

Medicare funding is guaranteed by law and here to stay!

COMPUTER Bytes Hoping everyone has a blessed Easter with loved ones this week. It has been a busy month with many people having computing issues because of Windows security updates. Sometimes your PC fails to load, but if you are patient – turn it off and on again, it may load properly. If that doesn’t work I can usually get the PC working again using system restore. However, some computers may not start up due to their age because of incompatibility issues with the latest security upgrades. More serious action may be needed.

GREEN Thumb I have previously written about some of my favourite ornamental trees, some of which have eye catching autumn leaf colour and others which flower beautifully in spring.

The other trees and shrubs which stand out in our region’s gardens are those that have different leaf colour throughout the growing season-not just in autumn.

The first tree I think of is the golden robinia in our garden. It’s lovely to see the golden leaves of this hardy tree contrasting with the green/blue leaves of a big gum tree (Eucalyptus scoparia) standing next to it. We also have a golden ash which has lemon coloured leaves and yellow bark on young branches which contrasts distinctively with the dark green leaves of a big oak tree behind it. Golden elms are of course the other magnificent specimen tree with golden foliage throughout the growing season, although many of them in the district have been badly affected by the elm leaf beetle in the last few years.

Purple leaf trees and shrubs are another opportunity to achieve beautiful contrast in the garden. Crimson Sentry maple is a hardy, medium size tree that has dark purple leaves throughout the growing season, as does the Royal Raindrops crabapple which also has eye catching dark pink flowers in spring. Quite well known across our region are the purple leaf flowering ornamental plum (Prunus nigra) and its narrow growing form Oakville Crimson Spire-these are probably the hardiest, most heat tolerant of the spring flowering, purple leaf deciduous trees. Less hardy, but well suited to a small protected space in your garden is the purple Japanese maple (Acer palmatum atropurpureum) which has striking red/purple leaves throughout the growth season.

Finally, there are the variegated leaf trees such as the Box Elder (Acer negundo)including a cultivar called Flamingo which has green and cream variegated leaves that have a pink colouring when the new leaves emerge. Another variegated leaf tree we have in our garden is the silver elm-a large, rounded tree that is great as a specimen tree in a round driveway area.

Tigers Reunion

The winners of the twilight barefoot bowls last Friday night were Steve Kirkman and Di Slattery while the runners up were Glen Burrows and Larry Nunn.

Last Saturday a major singles match was played with Roger Traves against Phil Lees. It was an entertaining game to watch as both players played some good bowls.

Phil won the game 31-20.

Two minor singles matches were also played. Mat Cramp played Steve Kirkman where Mat had a handy lead of 12-4 after 10 ends. Then Steve took control of the game winning 31-21. Matt McMullen played Tony Tuimauga where Tony had the lead throughout the game winning 31-19.

Good Friday March 30 - The club will be opened with prizes for market night being seafood trays and Easter eggs. Be sure to be at the club by 6.00pm if you wish to participate in the novelty event worth a jackpot in excess of $460. Twilight barefoot bowls will follow if there is enough names in by 6.00pm for 6.30pm start.

There are no championship games drawn to be played and no pennants this weekend due to the Easter break.

Wednesday badge draw will be $300 and Friday badge will be $1100.

Canowindra No. 4 Pennant Team played Cowra at Cowra on Thursday, 22nd March.

Cowra defeating Canowindra with an aggregate of 50-30, winning both rinks and scoring the maximum 5 points.

Bobbie Turner, Daph Bryant & Liz Thornberry represent our Club at Orange Newstead President’s Day hosted by Country Club on Thursday, 22nd March. No bowls were played due to the rain, so the ladies played Bingo. Liz won two bingo prizes, a box of chocolates & $10. The ladies enjoyed their morning tea and lunch as well as the fellowship and friendship from all the bowlers.

Canowindra played Parkes Railway Diggers at home in the No. 4 Pennant, Canowindra defeating Parkes Railway Diggers with an aggregate of 49-27, winning both rinks & scoring the maximum 5 points.

The raffle was won by Jenny Middleton & the Lucky No. by Heather Hoad (Cowra) with No. 38.

Heather Hoad, the C.W.D. President presented the Canowindra No. 3 Pennant Team with their Pennant Badges for 2018.

The Tigers 1965 and 1968 Under 18 Reunion will be held on Saturday 5th May 2018 at Canowindra Bowling Club.

The weekend will commence with 9 holes of social golf at Canowindra Golf Club commencing at 10am.

On Saturday afternoon in the Woodbridge Cup at Tom Clyburn Oval the Canowindra Tigers will play Manildra commencing at 12.20pm, followed by Girls League Tag then First Grade commencing at 3.00pm.

CRICKET The 2018 Canowindra Tigers first grade team.

CANOWINDRA TIGERS This week is a busy week for the Canowindra Tigers with their club launch on this Easter Saturday, 31st March. It will be held at the club sponsor, The Royal Hotel and Tommy Jeff's Montrose House. John and Tommy have been working closely with the Tigers club President, Andrew Whatman, planning the day to ensure it all runs smoothly. The day is open to all junior and senior league players, their partners, wives, husbands and their families and of course club sponsors and supporters. There will be a jumping castle, BBQ, Easter Egg hunt for the younger ones and face painting and a Easter Raffle. The day will start at 12 midday, with lunch at 1pm.

Last Saturday the Tigers travelled to Manildra to play in the Woodbridge Cup 10's Competition. In our first game we defeated Cargo 10 - 4 and were defeated by Eugowra 17-8 in our second game. These games were a good hit out before the commencement of the season with promising signs for the season ahead.

We are looking forward to a great 2018 season under new coach, Dan Barclay. A number of past players have returned to add to our impressive playing roster.

The Woodbridge Cup Competition starts

Canowindra stage 3 cricketers won the Grand Final over Cowra Sixers on Saturday. The teams were well matched having won and lost one, against each other during the season. Cowra Sixers won the toss and elected to field. The Cowra Sixers bowling was fast and unpredictable on the dewy pitch, and Canowindra wickets fell at a remarkable pace.

Hugh Breen had his eye in and scored 18 runs before being caught out. Sammy Austin scored 32 not out assisted by "Super Glue" (Bill) Harrison giving Canowindra a score of 74.

Cowra Sixers started confidently however Canowindra had other ideas and Michael McNamara ran out one of Cowra's top scorers after only 6 balls and so the fight was on.

Tight bowling by Sammy Austin saw 3 wickets fall, Hugh Breen took 1, Mick Coady 1, Connor Cole 1, Toby Fisher 1 and Maisie Harrison 1. Claire Wrights running in the field kept the score in check.

Mick Coady showed great form on the field taking 3 catches and Sammy Austin 2.

Will Grant and Mikey Mac were sure hands in wicky and kept the team together to take the win by a nail biting 7 runs, all out for 67 runs. Final score Canowindra 74 to Cowra Sixers 67. A big thank you to Jarrod Breen for coaching and managing the team and the constantly accurate numbers man Stevie Fisher.

The Canowindra Pythons held another trial game last Saturday against Wellington. The mighty pythons were keen for another hit out before the Graincorp Cup competition kicks off in April. The Pythons won the game 25-10. The game was played in good spirit against a friendly side with Wellington wanting to make it an annual event.
