Through the use of thoughtful and unique connections, the Child Development Center is designed with user interaction and wellness in mind. With a focus on ambient lighting, it creates a comfortably lit learning environment and the ability to adapt keeps the space interesting for all user age groups. By taking a “prototype” approach to the design and construction of the building, it allows for the users to adjust and grow as needed in the future.

The building is split into two main bars which house the learning centers and the circulation serves as a flex space for additional activities. These activities are typically considered outside the realm of “core learning” and may consist of building blocks, dramatic play and arts and tactile-play tables.
The structure consists of 5” x 27” columns that create depth in the walls. This depth allows for three prototypical wall infill types as seen above. One in particular is the window seat infill. The window seat creates an interactive opportunity for the children at the development center by allowing them to sit inside the wall, and even feel like theyʼre outside the building. These nooks create a safe haven for anyone needing a moment to themselves.
As this project had a focus on using heavy timber construction, it was implemented wherever possibly to try and push the boundaries of itʼs potential. Between the deep columns mentioned previously, there is a 3-ply sheet of CLT that acts in shear and is also the backbone of the window seat infill. The second floor is supported by 5-ply panels and the roof consist of carefully placed 3-ply panels that allow for skylight openings.

INVEST IN THE FUTURE| CREATING A PROTOTYPE OF A CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER ALLOWS FOR EASY GROWTH IN THE FUTURE. ALSO, THE THE PREFAB INFILL WALLS ALLOW THE USERS TO CHANGE AS NEEDED AS THEY GROW.

THOUGHTFUL DRAINAGE|PANAMA CITY RECEIVES 59.8 INCHES OF RAIN PER YEAR. CREATING “RAIN WALLS” ALLOWS THE WATER TO TRAVEL DOWNWARD WITHOUT UNSIGHTLY GUTTERS. IT CAN THEN ME CAPTURED AND REUSED.

INVEST IN NATURAL LIGHT| PANAMA CITY HAS 239 SUNNY DAYS A YEAR. BY INCLUDING CLERESTORY WINDOWS, THE SPACES ARE COMFORTABLY LIT, REDUCING THE NEED FOR ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING. NATURAL LIGHTING IS PROVEN TO INCREASE SERRATION, ALERTNESS AND FOCUS.

Eastbank Meadows features a market supported by local suppliers, a residential tower and a large green-space. The current 4.3 acres of asphalt will be removed and recycled to allow for the community gardens and green-space. With the goal of building up rather than out, the 14 story residential building contains 24, double height units to allow for maximum light in Portlandʼs unique climate. The market embraces Interstate-5ʼs structure and brings life into the space. While cars pass along the highway overhead, residents and the local community will be able to walk or bike to all their destinations within Portland.

The site is located directly on the esplanade so that residents and locals can interact and use the trail for exercise or commuting. Passersby will be directed through the market area to reach the meadows, in which they can stop for lunch or grab a quick snack. The locally grown food at the market helps lessen the reliance on unhealthy processed foods. For the residents, each unit has greenery just outside their window and access to the meadows below.

Located along the port of Genoa, This mini-library serves as a place for the community and travelers to come, get a break from the sun and read a book. Historically, the site was home to the city wall, that stood strong and protected the city from the elements. This project contains several “characters” that represent the elements: the book house is earth, the canopy is water, and the kinetic piece is wind.

Basing our library framework off of the shapes of waves crashing into the historical wall, we wanted to incorporate the exact mathematical behind waves in nature in order to create an accurate design. Waves are pushed by wind into a trochoidal pattern. Once they get tall enough and the wind pushes it over, the crashing resembles the Fibonacci Curve. With a focus on celebrating the relationship between the Ligurian Sea and Genoaʼs historical city wall, we strived to combine and implement the two patterns.

This project was unique in that it focused more on prototyping and building 1/2”=1ʼ scale model of a portion of the project. While my partners were studying remotely, the model became my focus along with the implementation of a kinetic skin of rotating tiles to give the element of wind a personality.

After being decimated by a civil war, the capitol of Liberia strives to be a beacon of hope and community by building a new national library. The key inspiration was Liberian agriculture to represent the resiliency of the country. The library program consists of a reading room, computer lab, meeting rooms, auditorium and childrenʼs reading area.

Rooted is a culinary institute that includes housing for students and restaurant space. By lifting the dormitory and educational building off the ground to allow for just the greenhouse to feel grounded. The connection between the two buildings and the greenhouse is so the restaurant overlooks the greenhouse and the customers can see where their food was grown.

Located in south campus at Clemson University, Sacred Grounds provides a quiet escape for students and faculty alike. Embedding the structure into the hillside brings forth a sense of grounding. The two major elements intersecting explore the relationship between social and sacred space. Approaching from the north, the sacred space cannot be seen, but in reality the two are interconnected.

Sacred Grounds is a non-denominational spiritual center and memorial space for Clemson University and emphases qualities of light, space and material. The main vertical element, enveloped by hollow brick, serves as a space for vertical circulation between the public and private space. On the other hand, the walls of the private, sacred space is constructed of translucent concrete. This creates the perfect environment for contemplation and meditation.
The model is crafted from laser-cut mat board and plexi-glass. To achieve the translucent concrete affect in sacred space below, the plexi-glass was coated with a thin layer of plaster to appear opaque from the exterior, but when looking through the slot in the back, one can experience the texture of light that comes through.

“It is the task of the enlightened not only to ascend to learning and to see the good but to be willing to descend again to those prisoners and to share their troubles and their honors, whether they are worth having or not. And this they must do, even with the prospect of death.”

The Reflections Pavilion is an architectural translation of Platoʼs Allegory of the Cave that focuses on the essential aspects of the narrative and demonstrates a relationship between the text and form. Located on a remote hillside, away from the busyness of life, The Reflections Pavilion provides a space for contemplation. Slivers of light slip through the crevasses where walls and roof plates overlap.

Located at 20 South Main St in Greenville, SC, Philosopherʼs Brew is a transcendental space, inspired by Platoʼs Allegory of the Cave, where light and shadow play the primary role. The location allows for high levels of pedestrian traffic, but it presented a challenge since the site is narrow and deep. The front of the structure primarily a public space containing a coffee bar and library, while the back is more private with a space for small gathering and lectures. Courtyards are located in the center and rear of the site to allow for light to travel further into the building.

The Kiri Shade is a shading system concept designed with 3D and 4D manufacturing with memory shape polymers. It is activated by an increase in temperature in a given space. At normal room temperature, the shade stays open to allow light in. When the shade senses a temperature increase, the shade closes to minimize heat gain.
After preforming a simulation to study the strain with several different techniques, it became clear that the Kirigami Honeycomb (Bottom Row) had proven create the least amount of strain on a material during the folding process. Also, when folding the Kirigami Honeycomb, the piece stays mostly flat throughout the whole process with very little curvature, unlike the earlier examples. Although shape memory alloys have a better returnability rate than shape memory alloys, there will still be fatigue over time, and using the honey comb pattern will help extend the life of the product.

Although it was difficult to get evenly displaced heat through the use of a hairdryer to stimulate the shape memory alloy at an actuation temperature of 104°F (40°C), the SMA was still able to act properly as hinges between the panels.

Taking inspiration from a beehive, Gradient Hive is an exploration of light through additive manufacturing. The honeycomb shaped layers diffuse light as it passes through the shape while simultaneously allows it to seep out vertically. This creates a multidirectional gradient of light that seamlessly hides the connections and original light source. The amber filament gives the piece a honey-like look.
