Fruits of Our Labor

fall 2023

with Aidan Andrews, Jacob Becker + Nick Cheung instructor: Mitchell Squire

Explorations in San Francisco became a critical case study for exploring spaces of informality in diaspora communities. As habits of consumerism facilitate and normalize acts of extraction, a violent struggle occurs beneath the surface. Extractive capitalism desensitizes and perpetuates a rigid social stratification, stripping diaspora communities of their agency and subjectivity. Operating to fulfill this expectation of convenience and abundance, service workers bear this burden as their bodies become the site of exploitation. This project serves to amplify the submerged perspectives of laborers and shift our material value systems away from formality towards informality to imagine new infrastructures based on care and solidarity. By situating this performance in an abstraction of the service industry, we see how people, spaces, and objects can transcend their prescribed roles to reflect more authentic expressions.

In the end, who reaps the fruits of our labor ?

Chicago’s history of architecture and the environment can be summarized by its continual negotiations of access: access in terms of not only physical barriers but also educational and economic access. In a city known for its redlining and segregation serving the economic and political elite, these equity divisions describe an issue that Chicago has wrestled with for generations. Throughout this project, we seek to define sustainable architecture as it relates to environmental performance and within its social and urban contexts.

Architecture is not truly sustainable unless everyone in the community has equitable access to learn from and enjoy it. Bringing people together to educate and create can provide further dialogue on issues and topics related to equity and accessibility in architecture.

Despite Portland’s progressive nature, marginalized groups have been systematically outcast and disenfranchised from participating in this active discourse. Albina is evidence of this as Black people are continually undermined by unjust social and political policies that both displace and restrict this group from claiming agency to express themselves freely as so many others have come to Portland to participate in. We propose a creative campus to reinvigorate a lively atmosphere where all are welcome to create. By bringing together elements of living, play, work, and leisure through creativity, we see how Albina’s rich mosaic can reestablish itself into the cultural fabric of Portland. By relinquishing ownership of the site back to its rightful users, the Albina community is empowered to flourish and breathe life back into their community.
