Who: Rachel McNair Where: Downtown Saratoga Springs Q. How long have you owned a business in Saratoga?

A. My handmade home decor business, The Bohemian & Co., has been in business since December 2018. I started that on Etsy and in 2019 we grew to being carried in two stores in downtown Saratoga; Lucia Boutique and Lex and Cleo Boutique, and also established an online store TheBohemianAndCo.com. So far in 2020 we have been picked up in an additional store called the The Gold Trout in Granville, NY. My other business is The Content. The Content is a content creation and social media management business that I officially established in September of 2019 after doing social media for a few businesses in downtown Saratoga in addition to my regular 9-5. I left my regular 9-5 at the end of September and have been a full-time business owner since then.

Q. What do you like best about downtown Saratoga?

A. I love everything about downtown Saratoga! But if I had to pick a favorite it would have to be the other business owners. It’s a very supportive community that has begun to feel like family.

Q. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A. When I was in high school my sights were set on working in the film industry which I loved but once I graduated from college, I gravitated into the family business of horse racing.

Q. Who is your biggest inspiration?

A. It’s hard to choose just one! There are so many female business owners in Saratoga who inspire me. Many have become close friends and I can’t believe the support I have gotten in such a short time from this community.

Hadley-Lake Luzerne Ballston Spa's First Friday Features Historical Society Seventh Annual Chocolate Festival Elects New Leadership LAKE LUZERNE — Howard Schaffer of Lake Luzerne has been elected President of the Hadley-Lake Luzerne Historical Society, following outgoing President Joe Kavanagh, who has served for the past four years.

The Historical Society, founded in 1973, is one the region’s longest-standing historical preservation organizations and has been responsible for multiple conservation projects over the past half-century.

Among the noted projects the group has played a key role in preserving is the historic Hadley Parabolic Bow Bridge, as well as the Harmon House and the Gailey Hill Schoolhouse in the Town of Lake Luzerne.

Schaffer previously served as Vice-President and Programming Chair, coordinating monthly programming for guest speakers including authors and historians over the past three years.

Church Pantry, Saratoga EOC, New England Congregation Presbyterian Church, Salvation Army Pantry, and Shelters of Saratoga. Last year the club collected a record amount of approximately 7,500 pounds of food to support the pantries.

Monetary donations of $346 were donated to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, which further supports all the pantries throughout the region.

TO THE EDITOR When I finished my term on the BOE last summer I hoped that the divisive rhetoric around school safety would abate. We are so fortunate that our kids can walk to and from school safely, there are rarely physical fights in schools, homicides in our community are exceedingly rare, and our kids, for the most part, have teachers and staff who care about them. But I still worry for our children’s safety. Not from an extremely rare mass school shooting but from things like student anxiety, depression, and substance abuse that can be exacerbated by bullying, nastiness, feelings of isolation, and/or intolerance. We need to do better as a community. We all want safe schools. But, how can we expect students to try to understand different perspectives, think critically, and agree to disagree with civility if adults in our community do not? Let’s focus on making sure all of our students feel connected to school, are not experiencing bullying, and have the support to succeed academically and socially. COURT Keith C. Owen, 42, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced Jan. 8 to 1 year in jail, after pleading to criminal contempt in the first-degree.

Andrew M. Acabbo, 79, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded Jan. 8 to felony DWI. Sentencing March 11.

Jaredd M. Elston, 26, homeless, pleaded Jan. 3 to assault in the second-degree, a felony.

Sentencing March 6.

Anthony Orologio, Jr., 67, of Round Lake, was sentenced Jan. 7 to one year jail, after pleading to felony DWI, in Ballston.

Joseph P. Koren, 24, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced Jan. 8 to five years in prison and 2-1/2 years of post-release supervision, after pleading to criminal possession of a loaded weapon in the second-degree.

Koren admitted he possessed a loaded .38-cal. revolver in his neighbor’s yard on June 19, 2019, as he attempted to flee from police, and “repeatedly refused commands by city police officers to drop the revolver and keep his hands in sight,” according to Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen.

Nicholas Q. Furnia, 25, of Gansevoort, was sentenced Jan. 6 to five years of probation, after pleading to felony DWI, in Wilton.

Elliott Q. Ruggles, 27, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced Jan. 6 to 1-1/3 to 4 years in state

prison, after pleading to felony DWI. Christian D. Roldan, 36, of Northumberland, was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in state prison after pleading to attempted assault in the second-degree, and one year in jail after pleading to criminal obstruction of breathing.

Sentences to run concurrently.

POLICE Matthew T. Washburn, 30, of Hudson Falls, was charged Jan. 5 with strangulation, a felony, after allegedly choking another person to the point of unconsciousness, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office. The incident occurred in the town of Saratoga. He was sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of bail or bond.

Justin A. Peters, 29, of Milton, was charged Jan. 5 with strangulation in the seconddegree, and criminal contempt in the first-degree – both felonies, and the misdemeanors: endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal mischief. Peters is accused of applying pressure to the neck/throat of another person, resulting in that person suffering a physical impairment, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office. He is also accused of violating an order of protection and preventing a person from calling 911.

A minor was also present during the alleged incident.

He was arraigned in Milton Town Court and released on his own recognizance.

BLOTTER 5 Alena Demarco, 21, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 3 with misdemeanor petit larceny.

Marcus Elston, 28, of Saratoga Springs, and Neil Lescault, 45, of Mechanicville, were each charged Jan. 3 with one count criminal trespass, in Saratoga Springs.

Aaron Edwards, 38, of Corinth, was charged Jan. 4 in Saratoga Springs with assault in the third-degree.

Joshua Imler, 40, of Cohoes, was charged Jan. 5 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and the unsafe backing of a vehicle.

Mark Galluci, 46, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 2 with harassment, and criminal tampering.

Robin Colon, 33, of Troy, was charged Jan. 2 in Saratoga Springs with assault, and criminal mischief.

Shawn Johnson, 37, of Saratoga Springs, was charged with criminal trespass on Jan. 1 and on Jan. 2.

Marie Elise-Bechard, 24, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 1 with criminal trespass.

Meghan McCabe, 40, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Dec. 31 with misdemeanor petit larceny.

Christine Lieberman, 62, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Dec. 31 with criminal trespass, a misdemeanor.

Mickenzie Miner-Papke, 25, of Ballston Spa, was charged Dec. 30 in Saratoga Springs with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and operating an unregistered vehicle.

Audrey Hill, 51, of Glens Falls, was charged Dec. 30 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

GANSEVOORT — William U. Winters, 85, a resident of Shelly Park, passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born May 28, 1934 in Elmira, NY, he was the son of the late Ulmont and Pauline Kuryla Winters.

Mr. Winters was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy in 1952 and was a US Army Veteran serving 1954-56. He had worked for NYS Corrections and then retired from NYS Department of Transportation in Saratoga Springs in 1989. He was a member of Old Saratoga Post #278 American Legion in Schuylerville and the Harley Davidson Owners Group. He enjoyed the outdoors,

OBITUARIES snowmobiling, motorcycling, boating and traveling the East Coast with his wife on his Harley Davidson.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Lorraine Yole.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jeanne Haskell Winters of Gansevoort; his son, Daniel (Lynn) Winters of Middle Granville; sister, Suzanne (James) Haskell of Hudson, NH; 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces, nephews, greatnieces and great-nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2020 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville, NY with Rev. Janet Vincent officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

SARATOGA PLAN CONSERVES 168 ACRES IN THE TOWNS OF GALWAY AND PROVIDENCE GALWAY/PROVIDENCE — Saratoga PLAN rang in the New Year by conserving 168 acres in the Towns of Galway and Providence. A conservation easement restricting the property from development in the future was generously donated by Dolores Arste and David Hickey.

The land protected from future development includes 137 acres of natural woodland and habitat and 31 acres that will remain private, including woods, a residence, horse barns and pastureland.

Meandering through these woods, it’s hard to miss the enchantments of the land. The scent of the fern-carpeted forest awakens the senses and the aptly named Barkersville Trails, once grounds for sled-dog training, come to life with the whistling wind. A tributary to the Glowegee Creek winds its way through the

woodlands, conversing in gurgles with passersby before going on its merry way, flowing into the Kayaderosseras and then to Saratoga Lake.

Arste’s daughter, Deanna Hadley, reflects on returning to Galway after 30 years. “I realized at that time the true beauty that my mother had seen so many years before. And when she spoke to me about what she wanted to do with her land it seemed that there was no other way,” she said at PLAN’s annual Conservation Hero celebration, where Arste and Hickey were being honored among other individuals for their commitment to conservation in Saratoga County. “[The property] doesn’t need to be developed, it just needs to be beautiful.. and [a place] that people can enjoy no matter what’s going on in the world,” Hadley added.

Indeed, the public will soon be able to enjoy the splendor of the oasis. Property owners Arste and Hickey who are horseback riding enthusiasts are graciously allowing public access for hiking and horseback riding on the trails, which are still being developed and are not yet open.

Through the efforts of Saratoga PLAN’s Monday Steward group, a dedicated group of individuals that work on trail maintenance projects year-round, as well as Death Wish Coffee employees, just over 2 miles of trails were developed in late 2019. The winding trails that jump streams and parallel stone walls are anticipated to open in early 2020. Arste and Hickey hope that over time, their property can connect with others to create a longer system of backcountry trails.

Trail enthusiasts donated approximately $25,000 so that PLAN could always uphold the development restrictions and maintain the trails. A $19,000 grant from Dockstader Charitable Trust covered survey, legal, and title insurance fees among others.

Saratoga County Grants with Town of Galway awarded $10,000 to PLAN for the development of trails. The Town of Galway Highway Department developed the parking area.

New Collaborative to Launch Locally Aimed at Ending Homelessness In Saratoga Saratoga Ranks 28th Highest in National Study of 3,000 U.S. Counties Charting Largest Income Gap Between Rich and Poor SARATOGA SPRINGS — In a recent analysis of more than 3,000 U.S. counties, Saratoga placed 28th in the nation for the largest income gap between rich and poor.

The Economic Policy Institute study, conducted using county-level tax data from the Internal Revenue Service, ranks Saratoga a few slots behind San Francisco County, California

and slightly higher than Dallas County in Texas, and is one of the marks highlighted by a new local group launching The Saratoga Collaborative to End Homelessness.

Since 2014, the rent for oneand two-bedroom apartments in Saratoga Springs has increased by 78 percent and 60 percent, respectively, the group says, also sourcing a National Low

Income Housing Institute report, stating that as of 2019, there is no county in the United States where someone making minimum wage can afford housing.

The Saratoga group announced this week it is convening a “multi-sector, problem-solving collaborative focused on transforming our system into a more cost-effective one, designed to achieve a measurable end to homelessness.”

Erin Healy, a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School and national expert on homelessness, has teamed up with Karen Gregory, executive director of Shelters of Saratoga, and leaders of the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church (PNECC) to launch the new effort.

Healy honed her skills in her previous role as a lead team member of the 100,000 Homes Campaign. For the Campaign, Community Solutions and the Rapid Results Institute developed a rapid-cycle

improvement model that helped dozens of cities (and some states) accelerate housing placements and drastically improve system performance. On average, these communities doubled their housing placement rate within 100 days. Last September, Healy led a community discussion about the issue of homelessness at Skidmore College.

Karen Gregory, executive director of Shelters of Saratoga, said while a two-year solution for the Code Blue program has recently been secured, “we need to work together as a community to think differently and move away from band-aid approaches to the ultimate solutions around homelessness, which are prevention and housing.”

The Saratoga Collaborative to End Homelessness will kickoff this month, convening both a “Leadership Team” and “Design Team.” The two groups will work together using their own experience and expertise as

well as the outcomes of Healy’s stakeholder meetings run in September to quickly develop one or two new cross-sector initiatives, with the goal of reducing the number of people facing unsheltered homelessness (i.e., “street” homelessness).

A 100-day “sprint” will start in February with the Design Team focused on innovation and prototyping new ideas and the Leadership Team working on clearing the path which may include policy changes, resource shifts, and leveraging partnerships, the group says.

CITY NEWS SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mayor Meg Kelly will hold Saratoga Springs’ State of the City Address 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the City Center. City Council member Commissioners will also be invited to share information regarding their respective departments.

• A presentation and discussion of the public draft of the city’s Unified Development Ordinance (“UDO”) will take place at the start of the City Council meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Subsequent workshops will be held 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Jan. 22, and 9 a.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 23.

UDO’s are considered beneficial for communities looking for a comprehensive approach to land use regulation and economic development. The UDO brings together the city’s land use regulations (Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations, Standard Construction Details) and its

policy documents (Open Space Master Plan, Complete Streets Policy, and the Urban and Community Forest Master Plan) into a coordinated, user-friendly document in accordance with the 2015 Comprehensive Plan.

Public comment will be accepted through Feb. 7.

According to a statement, the mayor anticipates the final version of the UDO, including the text and map, to be released in the spring for Public Hearings and for the Council to receive advisory opinions from the DRC and city and county planning boards.

SEQRA and a Council vote on the UDO will be the final steps.

Saratoga Casino Hotel to Host Blood SAYING GOODBYE: Drive with the American Red Cross KATRINA TRASK’S During National Blood Donor Month 91 YEAR LEGACY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Casino Hotel is teaming up with the American Red Cross to host a Blood Drive on Monday, January 20. Members of the local community are urged to join dozens of Saratoga Casino Hotel team members to give blood on Monday, January 20 from Noon to 6 p.m. inside the hotel ballroom.

January is National Blood Donor Month, and right now, the Red Cross has a critical shortage of type O blood and urges donors of all types to make an appointment now to give and help replenish the blood supply.

“Declines in donations can affect patient care, and the winter months can be a difficult time to collect enough blood and platelet donations to meet patient needs due to inclement weather and seasonal illnesses causing some donors to temporarily be unable to give,” said Alyson Barraza, communications director with the Red Cross. “If you’ve ever considered giving blood to help save lives, now is the time to do it.”

In an effort to help more

patients, Power Red donations will also be accepted at this year’s drive. A Power Red donation allows donors to safely donate a concentrated dose of red blood cells, which are the most commonly transfused blood component.

Each donation can help save more than one life. To date, Saratoga Casino Hotel has collected more than 1,300 blood donations at their biannual blood drives.

“We always see a tremendous response at our Annual Blood Drive.”, said Alex Tucker, General Manager of Saratoga Casino Hotel. “Year after year this event is embraced by our team members and local community. We’re very excited to once again partner with the Red Cross and help serve those in need.”

All presenting donors at this year’s Blood Drive will receive a $10 voucher to Perks Café, located in the hotel lobby.

In an effort to receive as many donations as possible, donors are asked to complete their RapidPass® online on the day of the drive. Donors can complete their RapidPass® in 10 to 15 minutes by following the four steps.

Donors will start by providing some initial information, before reading through the predonation materials and answering health history questions. After completion, donors are asked to print, download or email their RapidPass® to themselves, and bring it with them to the drive.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Katrina Trask Nursery School recently announced that they would be closing in June of this year. Originally founded in 1929 as a playgroup organized by Skidmore College, it later evolved into a full day childcare program in the 1940s, and then a cooperative non-profit nursery school in the late 1960s.

“This was not a rash decision,” said Shelia Vanacore, President of the Katrina Trask Board of Trustees. “For several years we’ve been hanging on, and saying, ‘We can stay open for one more year.’” However, due to a lack of enrollment and fundraising, the nursery school decided to close.

Vanacore stated that the school tried many solutions to its problems. “We did change some of the cooperative to a traditional drop off program in hopes that that would help,” she said. “But unfortunately everything that we tried just didn’t work.” Vanacore said that as enrollment and fundraising declined, so did staffing. The nursery was facing the loss of 3-4 teachers in the coming year.

The nursery school is most well known for its annual consignment sale, which was a major fundraiser for the school.

However, those numbers have also recently declined. “There used to be us and one or two other places with a consignment sale, but now with Facebook Marketplace and other stores, the market is spread out,” explained Vanacore. With a lack of funding, Katrina Trask did not want to burden parents with a higher cost of tuition, and was running out of its own finances.

Vanacore said that many in the community have reached out to express their sadness over the school’s closing, and share their fond memories of the school and annual consignment sale.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the families and entire community of Saratoga, especially what we were able to give to families and what they gave back to us,” said Vanacore. “We’re very sad to see it come to an end, but maybe someday there will be another Katrina Trask Nursery School.

We’ll have to wait and see.”

Former Public Defender Opens Practice SARATOGA SPRINGS — Former Saratoga County Public Defender Oscar Schreiber recently opened his own law practice in Saratoga Springs. This comes after 31 years with the public defender’s office, and a brief retirement.

“Retirement is not for me. I still have a lot to do,” said Schreiber.

“I’m young enough, I have the experience and knowledge, and I still want to contribute.”

Schreiber received his law degree from Gonzaga University, and started out at a personal injury firm in NYC. He later moved to the area and began working for the county in 1989, becoming chief public defender in 2013. Schreiber said that he decided to leave in August 2019 to

search out a new challenge. “The lawyers at the Saratoga County Pubic Defender’s Office are some of the best lawyers that I have worked with in my 37 years of practicing law, and I wish them the best,” said Schreiber.

In his new firm, Schreiber would like to focus on personal injury, rehabilitation, and counseling for addiction issues as an alternative to incarceration.

He would also like to help any veterans that come into trouble due to their addiction.

“Many veterans I’ve represented have returned from overseas with PTSD or addiction,” said Schreiber. “I will be advocating for veterans, substance abuse issues, and mental health treatment.

Schreiber will have a full time investigator and paralegal on his team, but will keep his practice individualized for now.

John Munter, Sr. to Receive Joseph Dalton Community Service Award Munter joins Tom Roohan and Steve Sullivan as 3rd Recipient SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that John Munter, Sr., has been selected to receive the 2020 Joseph Dalton Community Service Award.

According to Maria Trabka, Executive Director of Saratoga PLAN, John Munter, Sr., oversaw the original construction by prisoners of the Bog Meadow Trail more than 25 years ago and he volunteered his

time just two years ago to see that trail reconstructed and expanded.

He also served on Saratoga PLAN’s Board of Directors for 8 years serving as the Chair of the organization’s board for two of those years.

loaders and operating all kinds of machinery. Our staff would check up on him every day in the morning and the afternoon. One day he was covered in mud trying to get his front loader out of five feet of mud. He cut dozens of logs and hauled them out of there. Without this effort, this project would never have been completed.”

His son, Mike Munter, added: “He is not one to enjoy being in the spotlight. He is 81 years old and a native of Saratoga County who has selflessly lent his physical support first and monetary support when people needed it.

His impact spans beyond Saratoga County to a 2-year journey with the Army Corp of Engineers to build 2+ miles of trail along the Raquette River at Clarkson University and to build a girls dormitory at a school in Kenya.

The trails at Clarkson University were, in fact, named the Munter Trails in 2012 in honor of my dad’s work and leadership.”

John Munter, Sr., is a 1962 graduate of Clarkson University.

His career started as a rocket test engineer with GE at the Malta Test Division. In 1972, he left GE to form Munter Enterprises, a general contracting construction operation. More than four decades later, Munter Enterprises is now run by his two sons, John,

Jr., and Mike. The firm specializes in design build commercial and industrial structures, as well as land development for industrial applications. In 2019, Munter Enterprises helped the Saratoga County Chamber to construct a new 7,700 square foot field house on the Naval Support Activity Center, in Saratoga Springs, to provide US Navy Sailors in our area to have a safe, secure, indoor facility for sports and recreational activities, training and drills, education and graduations.

John Munter, Sr., served on the Board of Directors of The Wesley Community and as the Chair of the Building and Grounds Committee for nearly 10 years. He served four years as the Vice Chair of the Saratoga Builders Association. In 2018, he purchase Camp Boyhaven, in Milton, from the Boy Scouts of America Twin Rivers Council to give the Town of Milton and the NYS DEC time to work out a deal to ensure the 297 acre property remains in public ownership.

After the purchase at 80 years old, he was out setting fence posts by himself to safeguard the property for the coming winter.

John lives in Middle Grove with his wife of 51 years, Rosemarie.

The couple has two sons, a daughter, and six grandchildren.

The location tracking, or geofencing technology, is what makes this app so distinguishable from others. “The geo-fencing

was a critical component of selecting this app for us,” said Ward. “We wanted it to be instantaneous; you know, sometimes people plan to go use a discount, and other times, some things are spontaneous.”

Merchants who want to offer perks on the app can sign up through a form on the Adirondack Trust website, though they must sign up for at least one year and have a business account with the bank. Once approved, businesses can begin to offer perks through the app. “They have full control over what offers that they have,” said Celia Vincek, Digital Marketing Assistant at the Adirondack Trust.

The app currently has around 75 participating vendors, ranging from Glens Falls to Clifton Park.

Ward stated that the bank will begin more outreach for the app in March of this year, in preparation for the Spring and Summer season. “The more value that we can add to the app in the form of perks, we feel the more valuable that it’ll be to individuals that use the app and frequent it,” he said. The app is available for free in the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Elected for a two-year term were Jason Collins, from SUNY Empire State College, as Chair, Erica Choi, from Bank of America, as Vice-Chair, Robert Scheurer, from Adirondack Trust Company, as Secretary, and Tom Dingley, from Mosaic Wealth Advisory, as Treasurer.

Outgoing Chair Karen Charbonneau, from Saratoga Home Team, was recognized by the VBC for her outstanding leadership the past two years as the Chair of the volunteer group of Veterans. During her time as Chair, the Veterans Business Council helped to coordinate funding and construction of a 7,700 square foot field house at the Naval Support Activity Base in Saratoga Springs, implemented a new scholarship program to aid Veterans pursuing higher

education and established a new fundraiser to help raise money for Veterans initiatives in Saratoga County, among many other efforts to assist Veterans that the VBC undertakes.

The Veterans Business Council operates under the Saratoga County Foundation of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, and is made up of a select group of Veterans who are business leaders in the region.

The Veterans Business Council works to facilitate opportunities for military veterans residing in Saratoga County, including offering scholarship opportunities and connecting them with the business community to enhance their knowledge of employment opportunities, job or entrepreneurial training, and new business development.

QUEENSBURY — Saratoga Hospital has added space and services at the former Adirondack Urgent Care center, which is now known as Saratoga Hospital Urgent Care – Adirondack.

Patients have easy access to urgent care—no appointment necessary—from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. Walk-in X-ray and laboratory services are also available seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for X-rays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for lab draws. A prescription is required for lab and X-ray services.

The hospital invested about $750,000 in the renovations and

expansion, which created three more exam rooms plus space for lab drawing and other services.

“This expansion makes it easier for patients to access important healthcare services, and that has a positive impact on community health,” said Nicole Salone, site and medical imaging manager at Saratoga Hospital Urgent Care – Adirondack.

Urgent care provides walk-in services for patients with minor illnesses or injuries. Extended hours enable patients to receive the prompt, high-quality care that can prevent conditions—such as strep throat, earaches and upper

respiratory infections—from getting worse. Prompt treatment also can prevent contagious infections from spreading.

Patients with a serious illness, chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness or a lifethreatening emergency should call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Saratoga Hospital operates urgent care centers in Queensbury and Wilton. The Queensbury center is located on Route 9, just north of Walmart, in the Mount Royal Plaza.

Todd Shimkus, President of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce SARATOGA SPRINGS — Here’s a one question quiz that I hope everyone in Saratoga Springs will take.

Saratoga Springs plays host to 64 permitted special events every year. These range from Chowderfest, to the Victorian Streetwalk, Flag Day Parade, Beekman Street Art Fair etc., etc.

These events are attended by residents and often times attract visitors too.

They are fun, festive, and add to our quality of life. Often times, they generate business for our hotels, B&B’s, bars, restaurants, stores and shops.

Now while I can’t speak for all of these events, the Saratoga County Chamber plays a leading role in managing Saratoga’s All American Celebration which includes a spectacular fireworks show on July 4, in Congress Park.

And we took the lead in securing the permits from the City and managing this year’s First Night fireworks after they were originally cancelled.

So here’s the question: Who pays for the fireworks?

A. Government B. Sponsors C. Event organizers D. All of the Above

I’m willing to bet most people think it is the government. But that’s not the whole story. Don’t get me wrong. We could not host these events without the support of the City. The Accounts Office facilitates the permit process.

The Police, Fire, and DPW Departments all review these permit applications. This takes time and we know time is money.

They provide fencing, signs, trash receptacles, etc. The City pays the $5,000 per event cost for the insurance event organizers need to shut down a road. The Finance and Accounts departments are considering purchasing variable messaging boards and security gates that will be made available to event organizers. This is all helpful. But event organizers pay a fee for Police, Fire, EMS, and

DPW. These fees are based on the number of officers, firefighters, ambulances, DPW trucks, and personnel that are assigned to work at these events.

For instance, the Chamber was charged $3,387.50 for police, fire, and traffic department personnel for the July 4th celebration. We were also charged $2,495 for the First Night fireworks So it must be the sponsors that pay for the fireworks and these costs, right? That’s not the whole story either.

In 2019, we raised $14,140 for the July 4th celebration but had total expenses of $17,512.50.

This means we lost $3,372.50.

A reduction in sponsorship dollars contributed to the decision by Saratoga Arts to initially cancel this year’s First Night fireworks. The decline in sponsorships is partly due to how many more events there are now.

Every day businesses get requests for donations to support events and a range of worthy causes.

We are fortunate in Saratoga Springs to have more than our fair share of businesses that sponsor everything. Many give to some.

Some businesses, however, incorrectly believe that others

will pick up the tab. So they don’t contribute at all. Event organizers don’t fund these events either.

The staff time we invest to host events, like the July 4th Festival and the First Night fireworks this year, is for the benefit of the community. We are not being reimbursed.

So if events are not funded by the government, sponsors, or event organizers, it must be all of the above, right? Yes. Yes. Yes! We need more sponsors and more sponsorship money if we want these events to survive. We need more people — individuals and families — who love attending these events to make a contribution. And, we need the various departments that now charge us a fee to work with us to reduce costs too. We need EVERYONE to contribute or I fear these events we say we enjoy will just go away.

To kick start this effort, we setup a text-to-donate program for those who want to have fireworks in Saratoga Springs on July 4 and First Night in 2020. If you enjoy these firework celebrations or your business wants them to continue, please make a donation today.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — To start the New Year, 18-year-old Michael Ross of Malta, who had been a student at Shenendehowa, threatened to shoot students at Maple Avenue Middle School. He was arrested and released on his own recognizance to be arraigned at a later date.

Saratoga Central School District in response, increased the presence of armed security for the following Monday, January 6.

Local parents, students, and residents were appreciative of the increase but had concerns about what comes next.

One parent commented on a local Facebook group to say that he was cancelling work and keeping his children home.

Several parents and

community members attended the Saratoga CSD Board of Education meeting on January 14 to express their concerns during the comment section at the end.

Erika Borman, a parent, spoke passionately: “There is no debate that mental health services need to be increased in our schools. Yes, they do. There is no debate over whether or not we can remove over 400 million firearms overnight in the country. Not remotely possible.

While both sides fight over gun control, our kids are sitting ducks in the middle of a political issue that will not be solved anytime soon.

Finally, the debate about whether or not active and retired police officers are qualified to carry a firearm on campus has been settled.”

This has been an ongoing argument in the district for over a year with no clear resolution.

Soroptimist Grants to Fund Efforts That Help Saratoga County Women and Girls SARATOGA SPRINGS — Soroptimist International of Saratoga County (SISC) announces the availability of $24,000 in grant funding for organizations that support the needs of women and girls in Saratoga County. These awards, given by the club each year, should provide women and girls with

access to the education, training and support they may need to improve the quality of their lives.

In order to qualify, candidate organizations must reside in or serve the needs of citizens of Saratoga County. Grants are typically awarded for programming, start-up, or capital projects. Consideration will be given to the number of

people served. Individual endeavors such as pageants and competitions cannot be funded.

Ballston Spa Staff Recognized for National Certification BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Central School District’s Board of Education recently recognized those staff members who have earned National Certification in their respective professional roles and expressed congratulations on behalf of the school community.

Jessica Lamb received National Board Certification in Special Education. She currently is a Special Education Teacher who works with the students and families at Gordon Creek Elementary School.

Reid Keefe received National Certification as a School Psychologist. She currently works with students and families at the Ballston Spa High School.

Gratitude Workshop for Kids to Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hosted by The Children’s Museum of Saratoga and Coral & Blue Paper Co. Collaborate SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Children’s Museum of Saratoga and Coral & Blue Paper Co., a local children’s stationery company, are teaming up again this year to celebrate the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a reading and writing event for kids on Monday, Jan. 20 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Children’s Museum of Saratoga. This event is free and open to the public.

Making the Invisible Visible: Exploring Poverty, Racism, and Discrimination SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jean Fei, a longtime community advocate for diversity and sharing resources, will facilitate “Making the Invisible Visible,” an interactive three-part workshop on Monday, Jan. 20 from 9:30 a.m.

- Noon. The event will be held at the Susman Room, Saratoga Springs Public Library (across from the Children’s Library).

“Our goal is to increase social awareness, sensitivity and education about poverty, racism, and discrimination in our own community,” says Beverly Lazar-Davis.

All attendees are invited to participate in each stage: drawing and describing poverty, the ten chairs of wealth and the web of power. We will brainstorm solutions to the issues we have learned about and provide resources for youth to create

social change for a brighter future. Families, adults, teens, and children (9+), who have a willingness to participate in an interactive, educational and gentle program are welcomed.

ood-fired, artisan pizza might be one of the most perfect foods on the planet.

Crispy, cheesy, full of flavor -- but it has to be done right. Locals Tina Rafferty and Paul Dudka discovered that the best pizza begins with fresh ingredients and the right oven.

Rafferty and Dudka own Fired Up Pizza that ‘opened shop’ at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market just 3 months ago. In that short time, Fired Up has become well known for its breakfast pizza and classic pepperoni, among other 10” specialty pies available every Saturday.

For Rafferty and Dudka, Fired Up Pizza is a pop-up pizza shop and retirement plan all-in-one. “I love the positivity at the farmers’ market,” says Rafferty. “As a new business, it’s a great place to offer and perfect our products, and customers love to watch their pizzas being prepared.”

At the farmers’ market, Dudka runs their custom-built, wood-fired pizza oven just outside the mall entrance.

Dudka burns hardwoods to keep the oven at a constant 600 degrees no matter the weather. For him, this temperature guarantees the perfect, crisp crust with the right amount of char. Meanwhile, just inside the building, Rafferty creates pizzas made to order.

“We truly enjoy working together,” said Rafferty on beginning a business with her boyfriend. “And, we both love the farmers’ market,” she adds.

Pursuing a pizza business has meant a lot of trial and error for the couple. One of their biggest

challenges has been perfecting their dough recipe to a consistency that, when dusted with cornmeal, will come off a peel without sticking. A ‘peel’ is the shovel-like tool used to slide the pizza into and out of the oven. Rafferty and Dudka have also had to experiment with cook times and temperature while getting to know their wood-fired oven.

Despite these challenges, Rafferty and Dudka’s goals have remained the same: to offer a great artisan pizza with high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.

What’s next for Fired Up Pizza? “We’re always experimenting and taste-testing,” explains Rafferty.

“We are looking forward to expanding our offerings to calzones and pizza rolls in the future,” she says. The couple hopes to attend more local events and to offer catering options for private parties and gatherings in the near future. But, for now, you can find them at the Bow Tie entrance at the Wilton Mall serving up fresh pizzas to hungry shoppers every Saturday.

Yields: 1 10-inch pizza

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 1- 6 oz. pizza dough • Olive oil • 1 egg*, lightly beaten

• 1 cup of finely shredded cheddar cheese* • Salt and pepper to taste • OPTIONAL TOPPINGS: cooked bacon* or breakfast sausage*

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Stretch dough into a 10-inch circle on a sheet pan or pizza stone. Brush top of the dough with olive oil.

2. Spread the cheese evenly over the crust. Pour the egg over the top of the cheese. Add toppings, if desired.

3. Bake at 500 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Allow to cool slightly and enjoy!

As most of my Foodie Friends know, I am a heavy steel knife type of guy. I was intrigued however, when a representative from the Kyocera Company stopped in to my store in 2004. I asked him why I would want a “plastic looking knife” over a carbon steel knife? He smiled and said “show me how sharp your steel one is.” I reached for one of my best knives and sliced a paper clean with no trouble with a smooth slice sound. I responded, “Now beat that!”

Well, it was close to that song where: “fire blew from his fingertips as he rosined up his bow” as he took his knife and sliced the same type of paper. I then exclaimed “no sound, you missed!” Then I watched the paper float away as if a warm summer wind just decided to take it for a ride in my store. I was hooked.

• 1 habanero, Scotch bonnet, or Thai chile, with seeds, stemmed • 2 garlic cloves • 2 scallions, thinly sliced, white and green parts divided • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

• 1 1/2 cups 1/4-inch cubed rhubarb • 1 cup 1/4-inch cubed unpeeled seeded English hothouse cucumber • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro

• 1/4 cup olive oil

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 6 large skin-on, boneless or bone-in chicken thighs

• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

• Kosher salt

• Freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 500°. Line a baking sheet with foil. Chop chile, garlic, and white parts of scallions until finely chopped. Add items to a bowl; drizzle in soy sauce, then olive oil, mix thoroughly.

2. Place chicken thighs, skin side up, on a work surface and slash each crosswise at 3/4-inch intervals. Season lightly with salt. Place on prepared baking sheet and brush with sauce. Bake until skin is crisp and an instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest part of thigh registers 165°, 20–25 minutes. Broil on high for an additional 2–3 minutes for crisper skin, if desired. Let rest for 5–10 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, toss rhubarb, next 5 ingredients, and green parts of scallions in a medium bowl to coat. Season to taste with salt and pepper and let stand for at least 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

4. Serve chicken with rhubarb salsa alongside.

9th Annual Chili Bowl Fundraiser Saratoga Clay Arts Center is pleased to announce its 9th Annual Chili Bowl Fundraiser, to be held at the Center on Saturday, January 25 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Osteria Danny will be returning this year to defend their title of “Best Chili” for the 3rd time. February Break Drama Camp February Break Drama Camp at the Malta Community Center is now open to students ages 7-15.

SPAC Announces 2020 Classical Season:

Summer Performance Dates for New York City Ballet; Philadelphia Orchestra; Chamber Music Society Of Lincoln Center

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Performing Arts Center resident companies – New York City Ballet, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center – return this summer to present a 2020 season highlighting a continued commitment to SPAC premieres of both new and classic works and a landmark celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.

New York City Ballet returns from July 14-18, with its roster of more than 90 dancers under the direction of Artistic Director Jonathan Stafford and Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan, accompanied by the New York City Ballet Orchestra, led by Music Director Andrew Litton.

The Company will present four captivating programs including the full-length story ballet Swan Lake, marking its fourth appearance at SPAC and the first time since

2006, an evening dedicated to 20th Century Masters highlighted by Merce Cunningham’s Summerspace, returning for the first time since 1967, and a program showcasing three SPAC premieres, including Lauren Lovette’s The Shaded Line, a new work by Justin Peck set to a commissioned score by composer Nico Muhly, and the SPAC premiere of Balanchine’s Haieff Divertimento from 1947. The annual New York City Ballet Gala, on Saturday, July 18, will showcase Jerome Robbins’ In G Major, and Balanchine’s The Man I Love Pas de Deux from Who Cares? with music

by George Gershwin.

Specifically, NYCB will perform: • Swan Lake at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 and Friday, July 17, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 18.

• SPAC’s 20th Century Masters program will pay homage to iconic choreographers Merce Cunningham, Jerome Robbins

and George Balanchine, and will stage 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, and 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 16.

• SPAC Premieres - which includes new works by Lauren Lovette, Principal Dancer with NYCB, and Justin Peck, NYCB Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor – will stage 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 16.

• SPAC’s NYC Ballet Gala, the finale to New York City Ballet’s 2020 residency, will take place 8 p.m. Saturday, July 18.

The Philadelphia Orchestra’s three-week residency runs Aug. 5-22 and will feature thirteen SPAC premieres including the East Coast premiere of the Triple Concerto by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts composed for the genrecrossing ensemble Time for Three, and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in concert conducted by Marin Alsop.

SPAC’s popular “Cinema Series” will return to delight audiences of

all ages as the Orchestra accompanies, live to picture, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in Concert; Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Concert and Bugs Bunny at the Symphony 30th Anniversary Edition.

Highlighting the Orchestra’s residency is Beethoven 2020, a season-long celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The festival will include an unprecedented four-night traversal of all nine symphonies alongside four New York premieres by contemporary composers in dialogue with Beethoven under the baton of Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin (Aug. 12-15).

Superstar soloists performing with the Orchestra include violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Steven Isserlis, and pianist Jeremy Denk for Beethoven’s Triple Concerto (Aug. 7), and pianist Jonathan Biss in Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto (Aug. 20).

The Chamber Music Society Of Lincoln Center returns Aug. 9-25 to the Spa Little Theatre with an exploration of Beethoven, his influences, and the composers who were inspired by his work. Curated specifically for the SPAC residency, the six programs will feature 19 works that have never before been performed by CMS at SPAC. In addition to performances by David Finckel and Wu Han, Co-Artistic Directors of CMS, in residency for all three weekends, audiences will experience the SPAC debut of the critically acclaimed Calidore String Quartet, works never before performed at SPAC by female composers Joan Tower and Amy Beach, and debut appearances by cellist Inbal Segev and violinist Francisco Fullana.

JAZZ SPRING at the

KICKS OFF IN JANUARY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jazz at the Spring begins 2020 with bassist Tarik Shah and guitarist Mark Kleinhaut. The concert takes place 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 at Spring Street Gallery.

Jazz bassist Tarik Shah, affectionately known as the Groove Master due to his lightening rod intensity and his acute awareness of the soul of a tune. He has performed with jazz legends such as: Ahmad Jamal, Dakota Staton, Vanessa Rubin, Ellis Marsalis, Barry Harris, Pharaoh Saunders and the late great inimitable songstress Betty Carter. Additionally, Shah honed his skills in both the jazz and Latin world with big bands such as the Duke Ellington Orchestra (performing for the inaugural ball of President Bill Clinton in 1992).

Jazz guitarist Mark Kleinhaut is known for his elegant melodic improvisations, striking technical execution and responsive accompaniment. Since moving to the Capital Region in 2012, he has enjoyed collaborating with the many fine musicians in the region and has been utilizing this everwidening network to curate the eclectic Jazz at the Spring series.

Mark has recorded over 60 compositions, released seven albums including a Jazzweek Top 20 disc with saxophonist Bobby Watson, and an album with trumpeter Tiger Okoshi.

Near’s discography spans five decades and includes arguably the greatest cover version committed to vinyl of Woody Guthrie’s “Pastures of Plenty,” which Near performed as a duet with the Weavers’ Ronnie Gilbert.

Tidbit to impress your friends: Near (playing the role of student

body president Phyllis Goldberg) debated David Cassidy (playing the role of Keith Partridge) when the two opposed one another in a campaign for student body president, during an episode of “The Partridge Family,” which aired in 1973.

Crickets take to flight atop trampolines. Spiders spin silky threads. Red ants juggle kiwis and corn and a dragonfly balances along the slender stalks of a plant.

Together, the graceful actions of all this energy in motion depicts an ecosystem bursting with life and the basis of the Cirque du Soleil show “OVO,” which takes the stage for six performances at the Times Union Center Jan. 29 - Feb. 2.

“I find the show very colorful and great for all kinds of audiences, especially for kids,” says Alexander Grol, who in his guise as a beetle in OVO’s Russian Cradle act has a unique point-of-view of the awestruck “insects” whose intense curiosity is heightened when a mysterious egg appears, representing the enigma and cycles of their lives.

“The show is quite good in its balance of the different things and I’ve heard people saying some very nice things about many of the different acts,” Grol says. “There are very strong acrobatics and when

I have overheard people talking about their favorite acts, it’s usually about the slackwire performance, which is absolutely insane. There are very few people I’ve ever seen who can do that kind of act. Topof-the-notch acrobatics,” he says.

“Personally, I like what I do! I would say it’s my favorite, haha.”

Grol’s job description of his role in the flying act segment? “I throw and catch people for a living,” he says, with a laugh. “I’m the one throwing and catching the acrobats.”

Originally from Kiev, Ukraine, Grol was born into a traditional circus family. “Much of my life has been on the road, from the time with my parents when I was a boy. I grew up quite fast and they kind of integrated me into the show, which was the Moscow State Circus, traveling the U.K. for a while. That was the first circus I started in.”

He joined Cirque du Soleil in 2008 with the stage production of “Zaia,” which was based in Macau and represented the company’s first resident show in Asia. In 2011 he joined “OVO.” He says he’s on the road with the show a few months

at a time, interrupted by occasional two-week breaks, and when not performing he enjoys reading, keeping in shape and exploring cities where the tour takes him.

“Every time we move to a different city, we have a day or two to go out and explore,” Grol says. The loudest crowds?

Latin America. “We had full houses every day and they were screaming their heads off! That was fun.” He is partial to the west coast - California and Oregon specifically, the rich landscapes of Colorado, and the cultural sophistication of Japan.

OVO, which first premiered in Montréal in April 2009, celebrated its 2,000th show in February 2015 in Fukuoka. “Japan I like very much. The politeness is one reason.

And it’s super-clean there; neat and tidy. I found it very different from the rest of the world.”

The name OVO, which means “egg” in Portuguese, represents a timeless symbol of the life cycle and birth of numerous insects and depicts the underlying thread of “OVO” the show – which marks the 25th live production from Cirque

du Soleil. With an international crew representing 17 nationalities, “OVO” has visited more than 30 cities in six different countries as a Big Top show before transforming in an arena show in 2016.

The seeds of Cirque du Soleil were first planted in the early 1980’s, when a troupe of performers took their talent to the village streets on the shores of the St. Laurent River near Quebec City with a crew of jugglers, dancers, fire breathers, and musicians. In 1984, the show traveled on a province-wide tour and three years later crossed the Canadian borders for the first time, with a tour of the U.S. Today, it sites its headquarters - “a laboratory of imagination”in Montreal where 1,300 artists hailing from 55 different countries form the current Cirque du Soleil team. Since 1997, all shows have been created at Cirque du Soleil’s International Headquarters.

One wing of the headquarters includes three acrobatic training rooms, a dance studio, a studiotheater, and a gym where preparatory training – which can last anywhere from a few weeks

to a few months – is conducted before joining a shows cast.

Each individual show features anywhere from 50 to 100 artists. The cast is nearly evenly divided between those who come from sports disciplines such as rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics, those from circus arts disciplines, and those who come from various artistic backgrounds such as dance, music, physical theatre and street arts.

Every year the costume workshop uses more than 6.5 kilometers of fabric from around the world to create intricate stage outfits and sets, and the musical score is written by company composers, creating shows that feature original music Cirque du Soleil “OVO” will perform the following dates at Times Union Center, 51 S. NEW AT THE TANG: Ancient Ink, Contemporary Concerns in ‘Between the Mountains’

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A student-curated exhibition bringing together contemporary artists who depict Chinese landscapes through the medium of ink opens this month at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College. “Between the Mountains” will exhibit Jan. 25 through April 12.

For the past two thousand years, ink has been the predominant medium in Chinese art and calligraphy. Between the Mountains explores the way a selection of contemporary Chinese artists investigates the enduring concerns and symbols of landscape art called shanshui (山 水, literally “mountainwater”), while also engaging with urgent contemporary issues such as increased urbanization, globalization, climate change, and the role of culture and tradition in the modern world.

Artist Yun-Fei Ji’s Bon Voyage, 2002, resembles a traditional painting of the Yangtze

River. On closer examination, however, details reveal grotesquely oversized insects, crashed vehicles, and people in hazmat suits, which raises questions about the role of human intervention in nature and the drastic environmental and human cost of China’s rapid industrialization.

Yang Yongliang’s Before the Rain, 2010, uses digital editing, collage, and animation to create a video that appears like an inkdrawn landscape. However, the “mountains” are actually layers of concrete buildings and scaffolding, and the “trees” are electrical towers and cranes, which suggests that China’s fastpaced urban development has replaced the natural with the artificial in a way that makes it difficult to discern the difference between the two.

Other artists with work on view in Between the Mountains are Irene Chou, Zhang Daqian, Li Hua-sheng, Li Keran, and Qiu Mai (Michael Cherney).

Between the Mountains is the capstone project for Serena Hildebrandt ’20, an Art History and Psychology double major and the 2018–19 Carole Marchand ’57 Endowed Intern. Her exhibition continues the Tang’s tradition of supporting Skidmore student’s curatorial projects, offering hands-on professional experience as they pursue their own intellectual concerns.

Hildrebrandt will lead a workshop on painting with ink at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, and giving a tour of the exhibition at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 11. All related events are free and open to the public.

The Tang Teaching Museum is part of Skidmore College and is located at 815 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs. SARATOGA SPRINGS — “First of all, be a good teammate.

Try to do anything that helps the team, then the teammate, then yourself. Team first. That’s something to go by,” Joe Amodio, a senior ice hockey player at Saratoga Springs High School said.

Amodio has been playing ice hockey since he was nine after playing soccer and baseball before that.

“My dad was always a big Rangers fan, so I just gravitate towards the sport. Eventually, it took over as my number one and it’s all I ever do now,” Amodio explained.

Amodio is an assistant captain for the varsity team and plays center, wing, and “whatever coach tells me

to.” Mostly, he plays forward.

Amodio takes his leadership position on the team, and in life, seriously. He is the oldest of five; he has four younger sisters that range from age 15 to six months.

“Being a leader is something that is hard to teach, it’s hard to learn. It is developed over time. I’ve had a lot of good mentors, former captains, coaches, my parents are really involved with me. I have a really big family that taught me a lot about being a leader by example and what it really takes to be a leader,” Amodio said.

The two older sisters also play hockey and he thinks the two younger girls will also.

On the ice, Amodio is there to score and set his teammates up for success. He stresses being

prepared for whatever the game throws at them.

“At the end of the day, you’re trying to put the winning effort out there,” he said matter of factly.

Amodio knows the team’s record this season so far but he really doesn’t think it shows how good of a team they are.

“Overall, the boys are going really well, we’re very happy and working hard every day at practice to get better,” he explained.

Amodio also plays travel hockey before and after the high school season, as well as participating in camps. He has been accepted into multiple colleges, including Sienna, which is his top choice, but he hasn’t made a decision yet. He wants to go for accounting and become a

CPA, following in his dad, Charles’, footsteps. He has a girlfriend of a year and a half, Shannon Thomas.

He is also proud to call Kimberly DeMarco-Amodio his mom.

DeMarco-Amodio was a student at Saratoga Springs also and was

an All-American player for soccer and lacrosse.

His advice to anyone thinking about trying ice hockey is “just get out there and have fun!”
