It is with great sadness that the family of Pauline Mae Kindig announces her passing on August 18, 2020, at the age of 96. Pauline resided with her daughter, Lisa Burchell, and her husband, Randy, during the last years of her life, before entering Wesley Health Care Center.

She is survived by her brother, Charles Druck of York, PA, and her three remaining children, Carol Cope of Irvine, CA, David Kindig of San Diego, CA, and Lisa Burchell of Stillwater, NY. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Pauline was known as a loving wife and mother, as well as a hard worker who was always willing to shoulder any burden to help out her friends and family. She endured the stresses of World War II, as her husband served in the Pacific during the first years of her marriage. She faced the hardships of life, all while maintaining her sense of humor and strength of spirit. A kind and gentle soul, her family and close friends were what she treasured most. She was an avid reader and her cooking was legendary.

She also loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. Her faith in God was central to her life and gave her peace in her final days.

Special thanks is given to her caregivers in her later years, which included Rae Johnson, Renee Cote’, and the caring staff of Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs.

In lieu of flowers , the family asks that any donations be made to the Wesley Health Care Center, 131 Lawrence St., Saratoga springs, NY 12866.

Pauline will be greatly missed by her family.

COURT Steven M. Boice, age 30, was sentenced Sept. 1 to 20 years in prison for distributing furanyl fentanyl that caused an overdose death in Saratoga County in February 2017.

Boice admitted that he sold controlled substances, including furanyl fentanyl, from his residence in Saratoga Springs.

On Feb. 3, 2017, he sold approximately 50 small envelopes, each containing furanyl fentanyl, to “B.L.,” a Saratoga County man who overdosed and died that same day. One week later, law enforcement executed a search warrant on Boice’s residence in downtown Saratoga Springs and found furanyl fentanyl packaged for sale and 2 firearms.

Boice admitted to possessing a total of 363 green-colored envelopes containing furanyl fentanyl.

Jayde M. Jasewicz, 44, of Johnstown, was sentenced Aug. 28 to 1 year in jail, after pleading to identity theft in the second-degree, a felony, in Saratoga Springs.

Kevin Leno, 35, of Schenectady, pleaded Aug. 28 to felony aggravated family offense, in Saratoga Springs. Sentencing Oct. 14.

POLICE Jordan Willwerth, 35, of Burnt Hills, was charged Aug. 27 in Saratoga Springs with stalking, a misdemeanor.

Timothy Smith, 59, of Schenectady, was charged Aug. 28 in Saratoga Springs with criminal trespass, a misdemeanor.

Scott McMahon, 52, of Clifton Park, was charged Aug. 28 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and license restriction violation.

Gillian Plummer, 34, of Middeltown, CT, was charged Aug. 28 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, aggravated DWI, act in manner injure child less than 17, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Cathiana Eugene, 37, of Queensbury, was charged Aug. 29 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and moving from lane unsafely.

Shannon L. Green, AKA Shannon L. Tracy, 36, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 26 in Malta with burglary in the seconddegree, following an investigation by the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office.

Tyler Nash, 24, of Mechanicville, was charged Aug. 25 in Saratoga Springs with criminal mischief, and criminal contempt. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Angel Morales, 26, of Amsterdam, was charged Aug. 22 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.

Greg Avery, 33, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 27 with misdemeanor DWI,

Sherod Owen-Whitted, 24, of Amsterdam, was charged Aug. 23 in Saratoga Springs

with criminal possession of a weapon – a felony, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Isaiah McKiver, 26, of Amsterdam, was charged Aug. 23 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.

Christopher Palmeri-Ramos, 35, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 24 with criminal mischief in the thirddegree, a felony.

Michael Friday, 40, of Gansevoort, was charged Aug. 24 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to keep right.

The Rotary Club of Saratoga Springs is pleased to announce the opening of applications for its biennial Major Gifts Program.

The Club has $40,000 to award this cycle. As in the past, the minimum application request is $5,000. The application deadline is Oct. 31, 2020. Winning applicants will be notified by Nov. 30.

The applicant must be a community-based organization and should have an IRS 501(c)(3) designation. Awards will not be made to individuals, to government entities or to religious organizations for religious purposes.

The application must include a resolution passed by the organization’s governing board and signed by the Chair of the Board authorizing the application and confirming the validity of the project.

A ceremonial check will be presented at a designated Rotary Club gathering, but the actual transfer of funds will be held until the applicant can provide proof of the project’s initiation or proof of purchase if the funds are for a specific piece of equipment.

EVALUATION CRITERIA: • The project should be community oriented and be generally visible, meaningful, and useable by

community or a reasonable sub-set of that community. The applicant should provide a description or statement of the benefits that will accrue to the community if this project is funded.

• The project should be a capital project. Funding for program supplies/payrolls do not qualify.

• If the application is for a portion of a larger project, the applicant should provide sufficient information on the sources of funds for the remainder of the project.

• If the application is for a portion or a component of a larger project, that portion or component should be easily identifiable or recognizable within the larger project.

• Project should be completed within a reasonable amount of time and must be initiated no later than 12 months from the date of the award.

• A permanent designation of the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club’s participation in the project (i.e., plaque, signage, etc.) will be required.

The applicant should include a description of this recognition.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) was created in 1971. The IDA’s goal is to advance the job opportunities, general prosperity, and the economic well-being of the citizens of Saratoga County.

Through legislation recently approved by the State of New York, the IDA is now able to assist for profit and not-for-profit entities in Saratoga County which have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 by providing grants of up to $10,000 for the purchase of personal protective equipment. In order to qualify, applicants must: • Have been a financially viable entity prior to March 20, 2020 • Have their principal office in Saratoga County • Be able to demonstrate that they were negatively impacted by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

The Board will consider all invoices for PPE spent from March 7, 2020 to date.

Documentation will have to be supplied to the IDA to confirm to its satisfaction that any funds issued as a grant to a small business or not-for-profit have been used solely for the above purpose.

Please note that a “small business” is defined as business with its principal offices in Saratoga County, with fewer than 50 full-time equivalent employees. The funds that are being expended by the IDA for this program are derived from the fees that the IDA has collected over the years in assisting local businesses to build, expand and employ people within the state and primarily in Saratoga County.

The Application for the grant may be completed by logging onto the IDA website at www.saratogacountyida. org. Only a fully completed Application will be reviewed by the IDA, which anticipates that the demand for the grants will exceed the funds that have been allocated for this program.

We hear the term all the time and know it means an unknown contestant, but how did that horse racing term become part of everyday language?

In 1831, Benjamin Disraeli provided the earliest known reference in his novel The Young Duke, “The first favourite was never heard of, the second favourite was never seen after the distance post, all the ten-tooners were in the rear, and a dark horse, which had never been thought of… rushed past the grand stand in sweeping triumph. The spectators were almost too surprised to cheer…”

A Dark Horse was a Thoroughbred that trained “in the dark” meaning at night or in secret to keep bettors from knowing how well the horse was doing. That way most gamblers would not put money on the horse causing it to have very high odds and a big pay off when it unexpectedly beat the favorite.

Dark Horse originated in horse racing, which was the sport de jour in 1800.

Dark Horses started “appearing” in news articles relating to other sports as well as politics.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mindful of social distancing rules, members of the Saratoga Springs Lions Club held its first meeting of the new club year with a mask-to-mask gathering on Aug. 27 under the vacant pavilion on High Rock Avenue. About 25 Lions attended despite the heavy downpour and chilly weather. The hot boxed lunch was catered by Mama Mia's restaurant where the Lions Club normally meets on Thursdays.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Abigail and Keir Neighmond have joined Saratoga Hospital Medical Group Primary Care – Scotia Glenville. Each has nearly two decades of experience caring for patients of all ages.

The couple comes to Saratoga Hospital from Freeman Health System in Joplin, Missouri. The move is a homecoming of sorts for Keir Neighmond, who was raised in the Capital Region and has family here.

Skidmore College: COVID-19 Dashboard and Contingency Plan for Outbreak

SARATOGA SPRINGS — With the return of students for the fall semester, Skidmore College announced it has developed contingency plans should the transmission of COVID-19 spike among the college community.

As of this week, Skidmore reports 2 total positive tests to date – counting students and employees – and 6 people in quarantine. The dashboard may be viewed at: www.skidmore.edu/ fall-planning/dashboard.php.

The college contingency plan is framed by five “alert levels” of increasing severity. They are: Alert Level 1 - At this lowest level of alert, very few positive test results exist, and contact tracing shows a very limited number of employees and students on campus may have been exposed.

Epidemiological analysis and contact tracing suggest that the situation can be contained, isolated and controlled. Affected students and employees are quarantined pursuant to DOH guidelines and this Plan. Affected areas are contained, isolated and decontaminated. Other campus operations or residential life activities are not affected.

Alert Level 2 - The number of positive test results and numbers of exposed individuals in quarantine are slightly higher than at the lowest level of alert, but Saratoga County Public Health is able to conduct effective and timely contact tracing and the college has been able to act swiftly to identify, isolate and contain transmission. There is no evidence of community transmission at this level. This level may require limiting operations in specific operations, areas or programs for a period of

time to prevent ongoing exposure.

A larger number of students, employees and/or facilities could be impacted but that impact is likely to remain time limited and is directly related to specific and already identified infections.

Alert Level 3 - A small outbreak has occurred on campus in a defined population, such as a building, department or residence hall. Confidence in the ability to accurately complete contact tracing in a timely way is moderate. It is also the case that it may be difficult to identify a specific area for containment, isolation and remediation.

This level may require shutting down the areas impacted by the outbreak but does not require a campus-wide shutdown. Select programs may move back into an online-only environment with non-resident students staying off campus, resident students staying in their rooms and nonessential affected employees working from home. Individuals who test positive and who have been exposed are isolated and quarantined, potentially in bulk (e.g., entire building or more).

The College may order shelterin-place for students (stay and study in their rooms). Careful consideration will be given to whether on-campus services for employees, such those provided by the Greenberg Childcare Center, can be maintained.

Alert Level 4 - The College is experiencing a sizeable outbreak, as evidenced by numbers of current cases, increases in positive test rates or by multiple positive tests without clear sources of infection, and the College has clear evidence that contact tracing, containment, isolation and remediation efforts are not effective The College

will “pause” and move to remote learning alternatives and remote work arrangements where possible. Non-resident students and employees whose presence on campus is not essential to the College’s daily operations will be restricted from coming on campus.

Resident students will be required to shelter in place or return home for the pause. The “pause” is intended to be temporary (one to four weeks) and to control further transmission.

Alert Level 5 - The situation has escalated to the point where ongoing campus or community transmission is occurring at a significant rate. There is no realistic strategy to contain or control the situation. Given the timing in the academic calendar, the College has no other option than to shut down on-campus operations completely.

All campus operations come to a halt, non-essential employees shift to remote work arrangements when possible, and students move to remote learning for the remainder of the semester. Campus will close for the rest of the semester and students will be moved out following the College’s protocol.

Those unable to leave will appeal to remain on campus. Skidmore College will support any student who, for financial or other hardship reasons, cannot depart campus in response to a shutdown scenario.

If the College’s RO infection rate is < or = 1, meaning individuals who are infected infect no more than one other person, Skidmore says it will generally be able to continue in-person learning. Scenarios necessitating decreasing on-campus activities and operations or closing the campus will be communicated to all faculty, staff, students and parents by email and the College’s Fall Planning website.

City to Host September 11 New Six-Story Mixed Use Building Remembrance Ceremony Under Consideration for Broadway at High Rock Park

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The city will host its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11 at the Tempered

by Memory Sculpture at High Rock Park. The 25-foot-tall sculpture was commissioned by Saratoga Arts and created by artists Noah Savett and John Van Alstine from five twisted pieces of Trade Center steel. Four pieces came from the North Tower, one came from the South Tower.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new six-story building to be constructed atop a currently vacant lot is under consideration for architectural review this week by the Design Review Commission.

The building location is 269

Broadway – just north of Saratoga Central Catholic School at 247 Broadway, and just south of NBT Bank at 295 Broadway.

According to plans submitted to the city, the building will measure 70 feet tall, 82 feet wide and 179 feet long.

The mixed-use building is proposed to consist of

retail on the first floor, office and restaurant on the second floor, and offices on floors three through six. According to plans, approximately 2,250 square feet of civic space will be provided between the first floor and Broadway. Two levels of underground parking will contain 71 spaces.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Tiz the Law took the Traver’s Stakes in Saratoga after winning the Belmont Stakes and he’s headed to Kentucky to run in the Kentucky Derby. To celebrate this hometown hero, Stewart’s Shops has given him an honor, a dedicated ice cream flavor appropriately named, Tiz the Law. This Limited Edition flavor has a chocolate ice cream base with baked brownie and cheesecake pieces. It is available in cones, shakes, sundaes, and hand packed pints at the cone counter.

Unsung Heroes Prevent Chimney Fires

SARATOGA SPRINGS – After a fire on Aug. 21 blazed through celebrity chef Rachael Ray’s home on Chuckwagon Drive in Lake Luzerne, local chimney expert Jamie Wallace, president of Chimney Heroes, wants the community to know how to prevent these fires.

“Following a thorough evaluation of the physical evidence, witness interviews, and various photographs and video clips, investigators from New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control have determined the fire which damaged a residence on Chuckwagon Drive in Lake Luzerne was accidental in nature and began in the chimney of a wood-burning fireplace,” Colin Brennan, a spokesman for the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, said to the Times Union.

Wallace said fires like the one at the Ray’s household is preventable.

“The best way to prevent it is really follow the guidelines from the national fire protection agency (NFPA211),” Wallace said.

“What they do is recommend what the standard is for chimneys and vents and other things within the home, and their standard is to have them inspected annually.”

Annual inspections ensure homeowners don’t have flammable substances in their chimney and checks that the flue, which is the liner in the chimney that lets the dangerous gases escapes, is in shape. Wallace said there are three levels to an inspection.

“Basic inspection level one has 60 points of inspection, depending on if it’s a fireplace, stove or furnace. Level two [inspection] involves a chimney camera and checking the roof, attic, all the parts that the chimney passes through the home. Level three [inspection] is only needed

if there has been an incident like a chimney fire or some kind of tree damage, we open up the chimney and figure out what’s wrong with it,” Wallace said.

Wallace warns the homeowners with chimneys should have a professional survey each year.

“I think chimneys are like septic systems, you don’t really think about them or notice them until there is a problem, although no one intends to neglect their chimney,” Wallace said.

According to their website, the company receives many phone calls for blocked or plugged chimneys from downtown Saratoga. Blocked and plugged chimneys create a great risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. This happens because of the chimney’s age, how they were built, or what fuel they now serve. Many of these chimneys do not have clay liners, which causes the actual bricks to deteriorate and fall into the chimney. Others that do have a clay tile liner are often so deteriorated that giant flakes and pieces of the flue collapse in on itself.

Wallace created Chimney Heroes in 2009 Saratoga Springs, when the company was known as Saratoga Chimney Sweep.

The company has grown to accommodate six trucks dedicated to helping the local community.

“We live by our core values and just really try to create a company that is ethical. We are a customer service company that specializes in chimneys because I think customer service is one of those things we try to excel at,” Wallace said.

Chimney Heroes has locations in Malta, Clifton Park, Albany, Queensbury and Niskayuna.

“The greatest thing that everybody loves working at Chimney Heroes is we really do kind of get to play a hero in someone’s life. We really do protect people from dangerous flue gases or keeping their chimney clean. It’s fun to keep people safe,” Wallace said. “We enjoy what we do and we do our best to keep everybody safe.”

Community Welcomes Youth Ballet Non-Profit

BALLSTON SPA — The community of Saratoga Springs welcomes the Youth Ballet (SSYB) non-profit aimed at providing quality professional dance training to pre-professional students.

Cristiane Santos and Joan K Anderson started their nonprofit this year after working together for eight-years. The two professional dancers decided to open their own ballet school to focus on proper ballet training and technique.

“We have been working together for quite some time and the two of us have a similar vision on how we think a good ballet and dance training ought to be,” K Anderson said.

Santos added: “We wanted to have a dance school that can bring something back to the community.

Not just about us teaching the students, we want to offer services to the community besides the dance classes...we also would like to build a scholarship fund to eventually offer a scholarship for a students who doesn’t have access to dance education.”

Through SSYB, students can achieve their potential as dancers and artists while learning in a collaborative environment.

A focus is put on building selfconfidence and maturity in a nurturing atmosphere and SSYB places an emphasis on performance and positive reinforcement. Dancers learn the value of hard work and garner an appreciation and love for the arts.

The non-profit offers classes in ballet, pointe, modern, contemporary, and conditioning for dancers ages three to adult.

“Our youngest student is three-years-old,” K Anderson said. “[We] offer a few open classes to adults and older teens who perhaps don’t want to do the rigorous schedule, but they just want come in and do a contemporary class.”

Any interested student needs to

register and pay in advance to help SSYB social distance. Any dancer coming into the building will have their temperature checked parents will not be allowed in to the building.

There is a registration limit.

“In person classes, for the younger age group the max is eight [dancers] for the older students its ten [dancers],” Santos said. “The classes that we are doing hybrid, some in the classroom some

virtual, we are only going to accept four-kids for the virtual class if we have ten-in person.”

Classes will begin Sept. 14 and run through June 2021. Santos and Kilgore-Anderson said they hope to offer a 2021 summer camp.

K Anderson first danced professionally with Cedar Lake II and went on to dance with Philadanco, the Philadelphia Dance Company, where she was a senior member and toured extensively both nationally and internationally. She performed many ballet and modern classics as well as contemporary and new works by renowned choreographers from around the world.

Cristiane Santos Founder, Co-Artistic Director Santos danced and taught ballet and tap for seven years at Ballet Vera Bublitz in Brazil. She was accepted to Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) school with a full scholarship and joined the company’s Dancing Through Barriers Ensemble through which she performed in lecture demonstrations at public schools around the country, taught movement classes in NYC public schools, and performed with DTH during its 30th anniversary season.

Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Skidmore College Announces Community Center of Saratoga Springs Welcomes Racial Justice Initiative SARATOGA SPRINGS — Skidmore College President Marc C. Conner has announced the launch of the College’s Racial Justice Initiative, a year-long series of projects introduced in his first day message to the Skidmore community on July 1.

Drawing on conversations with students, staff, faculty and community members, data gathered through a recent campus survey and leading national research, this highest strategic priority puts Skidmore on an immediate path to making improvements that will create a “community of trust” in which all members of the campus community feel welcome, represented, safe and supported.

The initiative is comprised of 12 distinct projects, all of which are intended to be accomplished in the current academic year.

The work of the initiative will complement the broader work of diversity, equity and inclusion at

Skidmore and will seek to achieve real and lasting healing and change, addressing long-standing concerns and current and emerging issues.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs has hired Rabbi Boaz Marmon as their new Spiritual Leader. Rabbi Marmon has an extensive background that make him a formidable force who has had experiences that bode well for his congregants and the community at large.

Rabbi Marmon was raised in a family of “wandering Jews,” with stops in West Germany, North Carolina, Chicago, Phoenix, San Antonio, southeast England and Nebraska. The volume of travel was due to his father’s service as a Jewish Chaplain in the United States Army and Air Force, and as a Rabbi in civilian synagogues.

Growing up partly in places that were distant from major Jewish populations and synagogues, Rabbi Marmon (junior) learned both how important synagogue participation is – even when it takes some effort – and how vital the home is in Jewish education and practice.

In 2015, Rabbi Marmon was ordained Rabbi at the Academy for Jewish Religion in Yonkers, NY. Prior to joining Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga

Springs, he was the Rabbi at Temple Sinai in Cinnaminson for five years. At that synagogue, he officiated at the full range of every Jewish holiday service, life cycle events and special events; provided all pastoral care including home and hospital visitation and emergency response; represented the community publicly including fighting to keep Jewish holidays on the Cinnaminson public school calendar; expanded ritual programming; wrote or edited synagogue publications including a Passover Haggadah, Purim Megillah translation and Bar/Bat Mitzvah booklets; wrote quarterly bulletin articles and periodic newspaper articles; represented the community on the Tri-County Board of Rabbis and local interfaith clergy councils; hosted and led public rallies or vigils responding to major events affecting the Jewish community; and taught classes in communal colloquia as well as adult education courses.

Previously, Rabbi Marmon served as the Student Rabbi and a past Sunday School Teacher at Congregation Shaaray Tefila, Glens Falls, from 2008–2015.

As a Signals Intelligence Analyst, Rabbi Marmon received many commendations including Honor Graduate in Electronic Warfare/ Signals Intelligence Analysis Course -“DCSINT’s Own” Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence’s Coin for Outstanding Achievement (Informal Personal Award), Military Intelligence Corps’ Commanding General’s Coin for Outstanding Achievement (Informal Personal Award), Army Commendations Medal, twice the Army Achievement Medals, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and Joint Meritorious Unit Citation. In 1994, Rabbi Marmon received an Advanced Linguistic Certification in Arabic at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Presidio of Monterey, CA. He was an Outstanding Graduate and was the recipient of the Commandant’s Award.

Rabbi Marmon attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA where he received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Graduating Cum Laude, he was on the National Deans’ List and in the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Rabbi Marmon has varied interests in history, guitar and the Talmud.

17-GAME WINNING STREAK

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Stampede 13U summer team hit a 17-game winning streak for their season.

“We played a total of 29 games…and we finished the season with a record of 23-5-1,” said Phonsey Lambert, coach of the 13U team as well as the athletic director and baseball coach at Saratoga Central Catholic High School.

“What was interesting is, we beat 18-14U teams, and one 17U team along the way,” Lambert said.

Lambert’s team was elevated in a tournament called Last Man Standing where they advanced to the championship game.

“They moved us up to the 14U

level. They advanced us up there and we lost the championship game on a walk off base hit 4-3,” Lambert said.

That loss ended the Stampede’s 17 game winning streak, but Lambert said he was impressed with how the team played this summer.

“We had a great year and an outstanding season. The kids followed guidelines and they were hard workers. They were great listeners and they have a lot of talent on this team,” Lambert said. “The kids played very well together during the summer and during these difficult times. We are very respectful towards each other and they are very coachable. The players were respectful of the new rules and regulations in this everchanging world in our pandemic.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Over $35,000 NET was raised at Saratoga Bridges’ 17th Annual J. Michael Fitzgibbons Memorial Golf Classic. Held on Monday, Aug. 31, it was a perfect day for the record number of 136 golfers who played at the beautifully designed Edison Club in Rexford.

A portion of the proceeds raised benefit the J. Michael Fitzgibbons Memorial Scholarship Fund. Annually, one of their staff members is awarded an educational scholarship in Michael’s memory. The scholarship was established to honor their long-time Board Member who passed away unexpectedly in 2005. This year, Assistant Director of Information Systems Edward Hughes Cormie was the recipient. Edward extended his utmost thanks for the financial assistance he is applying towards tuition at SUNY Empire for a Bachelors in Computer Science.

Spin Class for Foodies

Hello my Foodie Friends !

The summer sure went by fast with this being Labor Day weekend.

With the weather still being warm comes the yearning for lighter fares such as salads. Creating imaginative salads was always a favorite thing to do by my children. When they were young (and still occurs) our eldest child, John would be accused (by his sister Aubrey) of not wanting to help in the kitchen with the making of the salads. One of the best and fun solutions was to get a Salad Spinner. This tool assisted us back then and still does today. How did we know our son liked it? When we would come home and the video game would be on pause and salad ingredients everywhere (we knew he was having fun and using the tool).

Why would you consider using a salad spinner? No one likes a wet salad. But there are two important reasons that go beyond personal preference that make spinning your salad a necessity. The first is that most salad dressings are oil-based. Water repels oil, and so salad greens covered in water will repel dressing. This will result in the dressing pooling at the bottom of your salad bowl instead of coating the greens.

The second reason to remove water from your salad is to retain its freshness. The more moisture that’s in your salad, especially if you’re not dressing the whole thing at once, the more quickly it will go bad. The leaves will turn brown and everything will lose its crisp texture if it sits in excess moisture. If you’re not planning on consuming all of your salad immediately, make sure each of its components is as dry as possible before combining them.

If those two essential warnings against wet greens have not convinced you that you need a salad spinner in your life, fear not, there are plenty of other reasons to get one. Many people think of salad spinners as onetrick ponies that only serve a single purpose and otherwise occupy more than their fair share of precious space in your home, but they actually have quite a number of alternate uses. Salad spinners are useful for washing and drying a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. They are ideal because you can wash and dry things in a single container, and the spinning action they use is delicate enough that it won’t damage or bruise your produce. The next time you need to wash berries, broccoli, green beans, or mushrooms, try using a salad spinner. You’re sure to delight in how dry its contents become, and how quick and easy it is to use. You can also use the internal compartment of your salad spinner as a colander for fresh-cooked pasta. If you’re making a cold dish like pasta salad, spinning the noodles to remove the excess starchy water will cool them more quickly and also help keep them from sticking together.

• 1 1/2 cup mayonnaise

• 8 oz bacon, cooked and crumbled

• 1, 16 oz bag frozen petite green peas, thawed

• 1 cup sour cream • 2/3 cup parmesan cheese • 1 Tablespoon sugar

• 8 hard boiled eggs, sliced

The basket is also great for defrosting meat and drying before cooking.

Vegetables from which it is good to remove excess moisture before frying like zucchini, eggplant, and shredded potatoes, can also be dried in a salad spinner, rather than squeezed out by hand. It also works well as a small dryer for hand-washed delicates.

• 4 oz sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large glass bowl, layer all the salad ingredients, in the order listed, one at a time in rows.

2. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together all the dressing ingredients until smooth. Spread the dressing over the top layer of salad, sealing the edges.

3. Sprinkle the top with cheese and bacon. Cover and refrigerate for 6-8 hours. Toss and serve.

Writing the Right Word

Accuracy in word choice is a key to effective communication. In your daily writing and speaking, try to make sure you use the right word in the right place with the right spelling. By doing so, its effect will affect your communication in a positive way. This quick weekly tip will help you filter the confusion in some of our daily word choices.

This Week: Official, Officious

Official, as an adjective, means authorized or formal. As a noun, it means a person who holds an office. Here is an official announcement: schools will be closed Friday. The official always makes the final ruling.

Officious means meddling in other people’s affairs.

They opposed any officious interference with personal matters.

SECURING AN ABSENTEE BALLOT

There are three locations in Saratoga County where early voting is accepted. Those locations are in Clifton Park, Wilton, and at the Board of Elections in Ballston Spa. All voters may vote at any poll site. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Early Voting Period is Oct. 24 – Nov. 1.

ALBANY — Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law sweeping election reforms that will make it easier for New Yorkers to vote and be counted in November. The three-part package includes new measures allowing absentee ballot applications to be submitted to the Board of Elections immediately, expanding the necessary protections to allow a voter to get an absentee ballot due to risk or fear of illness including COVID-19 and ensuring all absentee ballots postmarked on or before Election Day or received by the Board of Elections without a postmark on the day after the Election will be counted.

QUALIFICATIONS TO VOTE

BY ABSENTEE BALLOT • Absent from your county on Election Day.

• Unable to appear at the polls due to temporary or permanent illness or disability (temporary illness includes being unable to appear due to risk of contracting or spreading a communicable disease like COVID-19).

• Unable to appear because you are the primary care giver of one or more individuals who are ill or physically disabled.

• A resident or patient of a Veterans Health Administration Hospital.

• Detained in jail awaiting Grand Jury action or confined in prison after conviction for an offense other than a felony.

HOW TO SECURE AN ABSENTEE BALLOT You must apply online, postmark, email or fax a completed application or letter request for the General Election Absentee ballot no later than Oct.

27. You may apply in-person up to Nov. 2. You may file an application at any time before the deadlines, but ballots will be mailed out beginning on or about Sept. 18.

NOTE: despite the posted deadlines the post office has advised that they cannot guarantee timely delivery of ballots applied for less than 15 days before an election.

Upon completion, applications must be mailed to your county board no later than the seventh day before the election or delivered in person no later than the day before the election.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Saratoga Automobile Museum to Host Large One-Day Auction This Month

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A sleek 1951 Nash-Healey Series 25 Roadster - the first post-war sports car from a major American manufacturer, a classy 1931 Ford Model A – which features a classic “Ah-Oo-Gah” horn, and a 1958 red-and-white body hardtop which famously performed on the silver screen will be among the hundreds of cars at the fourth annual Saratoga Auto Auction in mid-September.

Billed as “an auction experience unlike any other,” the 2020 Saratoga Motorcar Auction takes place the Saratoga Automobile Museum Sept. 19.

“We’re going to have between 250 and 300 cars, and there will be three different bidding platforms,” says Bill Windham, auction director for the museum.

Perhaps the most notable, if not the most outright notorious is the 1958 Red and white twodoor Plymouth Fury hardtop with automatic transmission and red vinyl and cloth interiors.

“Christine. The movie car,” Windham says, simply.

Bearing “her” famous CQB 241 license plate, Christine is burned into the memory of millions of cinephiles and book-lovers alike - screaming across street corners, battering architecture to fiery structures of rubble, and coming back from the dead in the 1983 film directed by John Carpenter, and the Stephen King novel that bears her name.

In both book and film, she is vengeful, doesn’t take kindly to being disrespected and in every way lives up to her “Fury” name.

“This here is the best car I ever owned. Bought her in September 1957,” says Roland

D. LeBay, an old man with a bad back introducing himself as a character in King’s novel, while reminiscing about the first time he laid eyes on Christine. “Brandnew, she was…red as a fire-engine on the inside.”

When Carpenter set out to make the film and match the vehicle King had placed as the lead character of his book, he reportedly placed ads across California searching for models of the car, eventually securing more than a dozen.

“With a lot of movie cars, depending on the shot and how it’s being utilized in the movie, it may just give the appearance of being the same car,” Windham explains.

“Depending on the stunt it may have roll bars in it, it may not even have an interior in it - but this car is, inside and out, the real car. It is thoroughly documented as being one of the movie cars. The director

of the movie used this car to go back and forth to the set, and it was used in some of the shots.”

Previous auction years by the Saratoga Automobile Museum have featured two-day bidding events, with staging at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. This year, vehicle check-in and on-site bidder registration begins Sept.

15. Preview day is Sept. 18, and the auction itself will take place during one, long, single-day event, which will run from 9:30 am until 6 or 7 p.m., and take

place at the Saratoga Automobile Museum on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Bidding may be done in-person, by phone, or online.

The event will be streamed live so people may watch online via the Saratoga Automobile Museum website. All proceeds go to the museum in what is the largest generator of revenue the museum directs during the year.

Avoiding the

Soon ait will be time to

move any houseplants that spent the summer outside back inside for the winter. Before we do, we’ll want to take precautions to make sure they don’t bring home pests picked up during their summer vacation. If we bring a plant indoors with only a couple

of aphids on it for instance, it can become a big problem in a small amount of time. Once inside with heat and no natural predators to keep them under control, these insect pests reproduce quickly and can infest your other houseplants. The last warm days in September gives us the chance to take preventative measures.

The first step is to thoroughly spray your inbound plants with an insecticide. My favorite is insecticidal soap. It kills just about any insect commonly found on houseplants on contact.

It also kills mites which often go undetected since they are so small. Spraying outside while the weather is still warm gives us a chance to be thorough without making a mess inside. Spray every inch of the plants until the insecticidal soap is dripping off the leaves. Pay special attention to the undersides of the leaves since this is where mites like to hide. Spray again a week to ten days after the first spraying.

Systemic Insecticide

In addition to the spraying, put some systemic insecticide into the soil of inbound houseplants especially hibiscus that seems to attract pests. Systemic insecticides are drawn up into the plant through the roots and are pumped out through the stems and leaves until it permeates the entire plant.

Any sucking insects like aphids or scale suck up the insecticide and die. Systemic insecticide lasts for several weeks so it kills any insects that hatch from eggs after the plant was brought inside. It takes a couple of weeks to get absorbed by the plant so it is a good idea to use it a week or more before the plant comes inside. Naturally, you shouldn’t use systemic granules on any edible plants you plan to rescue from outdoors like herbs.

After spending the longest days of the year outside, our houseplants have become spoiled.

Long, warm sunny days with breezes required them to drink plenty of water. Once they move

inside, their demand for water will drop off considerably as the days get shorter. Don’t water on a timetable. Check the soil before you water. If you even think it feels moist, don’t water, and check it again a couple of days later.

NEVER let the plants stand in water for more than a few minutes.

There is no quicker way to drown a plant than to leave it standing in water. This is what kills most houseplants…overwatering.

Even though our houseplants live all year, they slow way down

once inside. Once they come inside, stop feeding them until March or so when they start to show signs of new growth. Then feed them, but mix your food at 1/4 strength until it’s time for them to go outside in spring.

We love houseplants for the greenery they provide during the grey days of winter, so let’s help them make the transition as gently as possible.

As the Saratoga Race Course season ends its 2020 season, James W. Ferraro is also wrapping up his 30th year as a trainer at the track. While he may not be a household name to current horse racing fans, he does come from a unique horse racing background that does merit some attention.

His father – James Ferraro – was a trainer and later a bloodstock agent, as well as a close friend to late Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens, often known as “The Chief.”

Because of that, the younger Ferraro had good insight on training horses.

“My father and him were good friends,” he said. “Some of my best memories are going out to dinner with them and listen to them talk about training philosophies, taking care of horses, how to handle certain problems, and what to do about them.”

After spending his teenage years by helping his father train horses, Ferraro eventually became a stablehand for Jerkens from 1974-1977. At that point, “The Chief ” thought it was time for Ferraro to train horses on his own.

“He said get out there and learn now,” Ferraro said. “His theory was go out there and start training because you are going to make the same mistakes now that you will also make five years from now. I learned that from both my father and the Chief. I knew I could always go back to them for advice.”

As soon as he got his trainer’s license, Ferraro saddled his first winner with a maiden claimer coincidently named Talking Partner on Dec. 20, 1977 at Aqueduct, which has been part of his home base for over three decades.

Ferraro’s thought of coming to Saratoga didn’t happen until three years later after his first winner. When Ferraro came to Saratoga, he made it worth the trip with just two horses: Lorine who finished first and second in two claiming races, and Table for John, who was second twice in an allowance race.

While Ferraro continued to train horses throughout the 1980s, his father stopped training horses to become a bloodstock agent.

It has been reported that his father was the one who helped Sam Rubin purchase the great Hall of Fame gelding John Henry for $25,000. Later, John Henry earned several accolades that include becoming the oldest horse to win the Eclipse Award for Horse and a Grade 1 race at the age of 9 in 1984 after earning the same honor in 1981.

Over the years, the younger Ferraro has posted a respectable career with more than 300 winners and earnings over $11 million from horses that include New York-bred stakes-winning mares Double Dee’s, Board Elligible and Aunt Babe. However, there is still a mare who has Ferraro’s memory: Courageous Karen, whose 2-of-10 career wins came at Saratoga.

Even though she never won a stakes race, Courageous Karen was a versatile mare on both turf and off track. In fact, Ferraro recalls one moment at Saratoga where she dominated an off-the-turf event in 1988.

“We had shipped up here a day before the race, which was supposed to be on the turf,” Ferraro said. “That night, it started downpouring. That filly won on the turf, but she loved the mud, too. Once that race came off the turf, she took off and won. I still remember that race well.”

Today at 64-years-old, Ferraro believes his “old school” style of training is still effective for his stable, just as he learned from his father and “The Chief.” However, he doesn’t dismiss some of today’s technology and science that can benefit horses.

“That was definitely old school then with the way they took care of problems with the horses,” Ferraro said about their approach to training horses. “Years ago, you were able to give horses time. You didn’t necessarily rely so much on the veterinarians. I’m not closed-minded. I try to mix it up a little bit. You have to still use technology and modern medications.”

Before the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March that halted New York racing, it seemed like things were moving forward for Ferraro as his horses found the Winner’s Circle at Aqueduct five times while finishing in-the-money 10 other times. However, with New York racing not resuming until the beginning of June at Belmont, some of his horses were kept on idle.

“Some of my horses were taken out of training and they lost all of that conditioning,” he said. “All we did was hand-walk them for 45 days. That’s kind of frustrating because you see the track right there and you are losing conditioning every day.”

Now that racing has resumed, Ferraro’s horses have gotten back into shape with two of them winning near the end of the Belmont meet and Bank Gala winning her first career race halfway through the Saratoga meet.

“We had a slow start at Belmont, then we picked up a couple of wins during the last week,” Ferraro said. “Saratoga is nearly impossible to win up here, especially with small stables.”

As challenging as it may be to compete at Saratoga, Ferraro, who is on multiple committees for the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association that include backstretch and safety, as well as a representative for the trainers, still enjoys the scene and people around the Saratoga backstretch.

“Saratoga is fantastic,” he said. “A lot of people say the same thing. It’s that banter. Even though we are very competitive, we are close-knit. We rekindle friendships. It’s that comradery.”
