BACKSTORY OF THE BACKSTRETCH

The people who actually care for the horses, the backstretch (barn area) workers, grooms and hot walkers often receive little attention.

Facilities to house the backstretch workers were nonexistent in the early years at Saratoga.

They slept in the hay loft, stalls, or tack rooms. Sanitary facilities for them were equally rare.

The race meeting at Saratoga was one of relatively short duration

– 4 weeks. The horse had better accommodations than those looking after its welfare.

A syndicate comprised of some of the wealthiest and influential men in America purchased Saratoga Race Course at the dawn of the 20th century. The syndicate, put together by William C. Whitney, soon became The Saratoga Association for the Improvement of the Breed. Many improvements to the public facilities at Saratoga followed the creation of the Saratoga Association.

The racing elite, the tycoons of the early 1900s built their own

barns on the Saratoga grounds. The Duponts, Vanderbilts, Sanfords, Clarks, Belmonts, Whitneys all had barns, in some cases barn areas built at Saratoga. They also had “cottages” built for their trainers and built bathroom facilities for the barn workers. Large squad tents were put up throughout the barn area to shelter the barn workers.

These tents were used into the late 1950s. Spartan concrete block dormitories with bathrooms including showers with hot water were constructed to house the backstretch workers, beginning in 1956 after the New York State Racing Association was formed. The dormitories have been completely overhauled in the last 5 years.

During the roaring 20s of the 20th Century The Young Men’s Christian Association thrived in Saratoga Springs. The YMCA was housed in a multi-story brick building on Broadway. Basketball courts, volleyball, a swimming pool, all types of activities were available in the Broadway YMCA. The local YMCA was so successful that in the late 1920s a satellite YMCA was built

on Saratoga Race Course grounds.

The building was built in a U shape.

The entrance to the building was at the center of the bottom of the U. Admission was 25 cents in the late 50s, with a towel provided with each paid admission. There was a kitchen in the entrance space. Each wing was equipped with pool tables and ping pong tables. Behind the kitchen were 2 changing rooms with toilets and showers.

Outside, behind the changing rooms were 2 swimming pools.

The pools were separated by a wall.

Segregation, separate but equal, was in force even in Saratoga Springs. The wall separating the pools was gone by the late 1960s.

This YMCA building came to be called the Jockey Y. The Jockey Y held softball games and tournaments. An elevated, roofed boxing ring held multiple boxing matches each week during the race meet.

The Great Depression saw the Saratoga Springs YMCA cease to exist. The YMCA building at the race course became the property of the Saratoga Association.

In the 1990s the swimming pools were removed and the east wing of the structure was converted to a women’s dormitory. Old timers

still call the building the Jockey Y, the modern world refers to the building as the Rec Center.

Through a vast expanse of the history of racing and Saratoga Race Course a large portion of the backstretch work force were African American. Today, the backstretch work force is predominately Latino.

There are many reasons for that turn around in the workforce.

During the 1980s the face and the language on the backstretch changed seemingly overnight. Jobs on the backstretch never paid well with minimum wage and benefits arriving fairly recently. The work sometimes seems constant.

The change in the makeup of the workforce brought other issues with some issues having major impact. The language difference is perhaps the simplest to solve. Legal immigration is difficult, a Green Card, even a Seasonal 7-month Visa is becoming harder to obtain.

And these are increasingly expensive. In almost all cases the expense is beyond a groom’s ability to meet the trainer who employs him will, often, cover the expense.

Racetrack life has changed and is constantly changing. Many organizations and individuals are working to improve the living conditions of the backstretch workers.

The Race Track Chaplaincy, and B.E.S.T. work very hard to improve the living conditions in the barn area. This year an outdoor pavilion and a preschool childcare facility have been opened for the barn area workforce, through the efforts of thoroughbred race horse owners Marylou Whitney and Michael Dubb. The outdoor pavilion was the brainchild of the late Marylou Whitney. The pavilion was opened with an ice cream social and will be used to host dinners for the backstretch workforce. The childcare center, Faith’s House, is the result of the efforts of Michael Dubb. Faith’s House will now mirror the services to the children of backstretch employees at Saratoga that Anna’s House at Belmont Park provides.

These changes have improved the living conditions of track workers and their families, who are important contributors to the success of the Saratoga season each summer.

A. Almost eight years.

A. We help both!

Q. If you could estimate, how many homes do you help people buy and/or sell annually?

A. This year we are right around 120, but our goal is 160.

Q. What inspired you to work in this field?

A. I used to be a 1st and 2nd grade teacher. I lived all around the country and decided to move closer home. I got laid off but wanted to stay here because I love Saratoga and was closer to family. I had savings built up, so I thought I would give it a whirl!

Q. What are some of the gratifying things about helping people buy and sell homes?

A. Buying or selling a home is a nerve-wracking process. I want to make it as seamless and stressfree as possible. Buying a home is like finding the right puzzle piece, and when you walk into the perfect home you can see it in the client’s eyes.

Q. What advice can you give to someone who is interested in becoming a real estate salesperson?

A. Make sure you have patience, compassion, and empathy; put yourself in the client’s shoes and understand their wants and needs.

Communicate with the agent on the other side; communication and relationships with other agents are key in a transaction.

Q. What is the market like right now in the Saratoga area?

A. It is a great market for sellers with great terms for agents to negotiate on their behalf.

LATHAM — The New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) is reminding drivers to be extra careful this year as school districts begin to reopen across the state.

The Association is also alerting parents and caregivers that there could be disruptions to school transportation this year as school districts face an unprecedented shortage in school bus drivers driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, extension of extra unemployment benefits and demand for drivers in the package handling industry.

According to a statewide survey conducted by NYAPT of school bus drivers across the state, an estimated 50,000 motorists in New York illegally pass stopped school buses every day school is in session, endangering students and putting their lives at risk.

“Providing New York’s school-age children a safe school

bus ride to and from school each day is our top priority, and we urge all drivers to do their part and be extra cautious as schools reopen,” NYAPT President Ted Nugent who is the school transportation director at the Coxsackie-Athens CSD, said in a statement. “We are asking drivers to avoid distractions while driving, be aware that school buses are back on the roads, and to always stop when they

see those red lights flashing on a school bus because students’ lives depend on it.”

New York State Vehicle and Traffic law requires all vehicles to come to a full stop when approaching a school bus stopped with red lights flashing. Red flashing lights indicate that a child is either boarding or disembarking a school bus.

New York state law prohibits the passing of a school bus that is stopped with red lights flashing regardless of your direction of travel, even if there is a multilane or divided highway.

Penalties for a first-time offense include a fine from $250 to $400, five points on your license and the possibility of 30 days in jail. A second conviction within three years will result in a $600 to $750 fine and up to 180 days in jail; while three or more convictions will result in a fine from $750 to $1,000, mandatory revocation of your driver’s license and up to 180 days in jail.

Shayne Richardson, 28, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 23 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, speed not prudent, and a vehicle equipment violation.

Arad Waris, 24, of Albany, was charged Aug. 22 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI.

Anthony Ippoliti, 52, of Galway, was charged Aug. 18 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and operating vehicle while using mobile phone.

Andrew Miller, 35, of Schenectady, was charged Aug. 18 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor petit larceny.

Marcus Fogle, 40, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 19 with harassment, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental official.

Yisel Martinez, 42, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 19 with harassment in the second-degree.

Chad Lang, 47, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 13 with criminal trespass misdemeanor.

Graham is accused of being involved in a physical altercation with several members of the Corrections staff. Two Corrections Officers and a Corrections Sergeant were sent to the Malta Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Bridges announced Jane Mastaitis to be their Chief Executive Officer effective October 1, 2021. In her role, Jane will provide leadership for all aspects of Saratoga Bridges’ operations and is responsible for implementing policies and programs to carry out the work of the organization with an emphasis on long-term goals, growth and sustainability in the alignment of their strategic plan. Jane is replacing Valerie Muratori who will be retiring after 38 years of service to the agency.

Saratoga Bridges also welcomed Dorothy Broekhuizen as their new Chief Operating Officer replacing Greg Cuda who retired after 30 years with the agency. Dorothy is responsible for assisting the CEO in leading,

developing and overseeing the dayto-day administration of services to ensure they remain at a consistent high level and with a personcentered focus while maintaining the programmatic structure and regulatory requirements.

Saratoga Bridges has been providing the highest level of programs to people with developmental disabilities and their families for more than 60 years by promoting their abilities and achievements in every aspect of community life. SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga County Chamber Of Commerce, the Saratoga Springs City Center, and the Saratoga Farmers Market will host their Annual Saratoga Giant PumpkinFest September 25 from 10-4 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs City Center Parking Garage.

Giant pumpkin growers from the Northeast will again compete at this Festival to find the biggest pumpkin of the year.

In 2019, the festival had over 40 giant pumpkins and a crowd of 10,000 people in attendance. Last year, pumpkins were safely weighed and transported to locations for families around the county to view

for the month of October.

The Saratoga Giant PumpkinFest is a free familyfriendly event. Giant pumpkins begin arriving in the early morning with the weigh-off starting at 11 a.m. The Saratoga Farmer's Market will be next door on High Rock Ave. open from 10-3 p.m. with vendors and special exhibits. There will also be opportunities to take selfies with the giant pumpkins to share with friends and family. Contest Winners will be announced at the end of the festival.

Sustainable Saratoga to Host 5th Annual Saratoga County History Roundtable Sept. 16 Saratoga Recycles Day on October 2 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga County History Roundtable will offer a presentation by Russ VanDervoort, Waterford Town Historian, at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa at 7 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 16.

VanDervoort will tell the story of a 150-year-old murder for hire plot that a newspaper called “The Most Damnable Murder Plot ever Ventilated!” - an

event that unfolded in 1870-1871 that involved participants from throughout Saratoga County.

Players Wanted for Annual Golf Tournament – Benefits Pediatric Heart Patients SARATOGA SPRINGS — Sustainable Saratoga will hold their 5th annual Saratoga Recycles Day from 9 a.m. – noon, on Saturday, Oct. 2 in the SPAC overflow parking lot on the west side of Route 50.

There are COVID-related safety protocols in place again this year – masks are required; exact change is requested to minimize the handling of money; donation items should be organized by drop-off station to reduce physical contact; and participants should remain in their vehicles at all times.

Sustainable Saratoga will accept clothing & textiles (any condition), small appliances & electronics (including TVs), scrap metal, eyeglasses, hearing aids, adult bikes, 20 & 24-inch mountain bikes, musical instruments, backpacks, cell phones with chargers, garden tools and more.

Anyone can participate. There are no residency requirements for this event. Cost is $5 per vehicle fee, plus $30 per TV or monitor (limit of 4 TVs per vehicle).

This year, as always, Sustainable Saratoga is collecting items for a wide range of local

nonprofits, including Bikeatoga, Pitney Meadows Community Farm, We Are Instrumental, Wellspring, Backstretch Employees Service Team (B.E.S.T.), Domestic Violence Project of Warren & Washington Counties, and the Saratoga Springs Lions Club.

Resources for Veterans of Afghanistan BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency announced it has multiple resources and programs available for Afghanistan Veterans.

The Saratoga County Veterans Peer Connection Program offers mentoring, informal meet-ups, structured assistance, and one-on-one peer matching to help veterans manage the unique stress and challenges they may feel. The program also helps to foster relationships within the veteran community that will build resiliency through encouragement, personal connections, and access to support and crisis intervention measures. All Veterans are welcome regardless of military discharge.

Veterans looking for a way to meet other veterans in a stress free, no obligations environment, are invited to gather at Saratoga Coffee Traders (447 Broadway, Saratoga Springs) on Tuesday evenings from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Participants

will receive a free coffee and sandwich along with encouraging and supportive conversation with other veterans. No agenda, just veterans spending time together.

NEW ALBANY MED RESEARCH SHEDS LIGHT ON INFECTIOUSNESS OF COVID-19 ALBANY — Researchers at Albany Medical College and Albany Medical Center Hospital found that patients with SARSCoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, are infectious only during the initial onset of symptoms.

The study, published in the August 2021 issue of the Journal of Clinical Virology, and released Aug. 31, was a collaborative effort between Albany Med’s Departments of Immunology and Microbial Disease, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Epidemiology.

“This illuminating study has implications within the hospital, as we work to effectively

isolate infectious patients, and for the larger community, in terms of knowing when we can safely discharge patients who no longer need the high level of care offered in the hospital,” said Dennis P. McKenna, M.D., president and CEO of Albany Med, in a statement.

A nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) from nasopharyngeal and throat swabs is the gold standard for diagnosing Covid19. However, this test doesn’t distinguish between active virus and other viral genomic fragments that no longer contain active virus, said Dennis W. Metzger, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Immunology

and Microbial Disease at Albany Medical College and one of the lead authors of the study.

Beginning in the early days of the pandemic in 2020, instead of relying solely on the NAATs, also known as the PCR test, Albany Med researchers used complex virus culture methods combined with assays to analyze antibodies in samples from congregate care Covid-19 patients hospitalized at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

As expected, they found that the patients expressed infectious virus very early after being admitted to the hospital. However, subsequent samples from the same patients showed that the patients quickly developed mucosal antibodies that suppress viral replication – that is, the virus was no longer reproducing itself.

This was the case even when the patients continued to test positive for Covid-19 by PCR, sometimes weeks after the initial infection.

Dr. Metzger explained that active virus was likely present in the early stages of infection because antibody levels were low.

“But as the disease progresses and the body produces larger amounts of antibody, the virus is effectively neutralized and the patient becomes noninfectious,” he said.

The study was done using patients with the original Covid19 virus, not the Delta variant, but researchers say the results would be applicable to the Delta variant and other variants as well.

In Saratoga County, the 7-day rolling positivity infection rate was 4.6%, as of Aug. 31.

According to Saratoga County Public Health Services, 67.8% of county residents have completed the vaccine series.

Assemblywoman Woerner: Landlords Should Not Be Punished SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK & PLAY!

ROUND LAKE — Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake), released the following statement on Aug. 31: “When the eviction moratorium was put in place 17 months ago, it was meant to mitigate the unforeseen challenges of the

COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure no one would be left homeless due to a pandemic-related loss of employment or income.

“Earlier this spring, I supported allocating $2.3 billion in federal and state relief funds to help both landlords and tenants.

This money was intended to pay landlords back for the loss of income. The state has been unacceptably slow in getting this money to the people who need it: only 7.8% of the applications submitted from Saratoga County tenants/landlords have been paid out to-date, and 10% of applications from Washington County.

Landlords have been covering expenses out of pocket for over a year and a half and should not be expected to be the sole protectors of this safety net. Many have suffered from a significant loss of income due to the lack of rent money and will be put in an even more difficult situation when property taxes come due next month.

“The moratorium has gone on long enough. In April, I opposed extending the eviction moratorium… I will again vote against this legislation. We must work to restore balance in the housing market. Landlords should not be punished for the state’s failure to distribute rent relief in an expeditious manner.”

DÉJÀ VU Local Vietnam Vets Reflect

“My God, everything was different that morning. The radio traffic. The panic. The confusion,” recalled Bill O’Brien of the last days of what was the longest war before the most recent one. It was springtime 1975.

“The flight from Cubee, the first hour-and-a-half was normal.

All of a sudden, you’re into this hornet’s nest. The end of that day, landing at U-Tapao, which is a Royal Thai base, was a surreal experience,” recalled O’Brien, who retired a Navy Captain in 2006 – a rank equal to the Army rank of colonel.

“The South Vietnamese aircraft had been running for their lives. Coming into U-Tapao they weren’t calling anybody for permission to land. They were landing in the trees. They were landing in the grass. They were upside down,” he said. “It looked so weird taxiing in. And they were bulldozing planes off the runway so we could land. It looked like you took an airshow with vintage military aircraft and just…shook it all up.”

Vietnam. Afghanistan.

“Sometimes, what you find are amazing parallels between what’s happening now and what happened back in Saigon,” says Roy McDonald, president of the Friends of the New York State

Military Museum. O’Brien and Barry Hartman, both Saratoga County residents, are members of the board. The museum includes exhibits from the French and Indian war to displays remembering 9/11. The artifacts of Vietnam feature instructive signage of things like the Paris Peace Accords and the Fall of Saigon, as well as the cloths and tools, uniforms and equipment of the era.

“I was in Da Nang, that was the north part when we brought all the troops out. I was there ’67-’68 and June ’72 to March ’73. I came out on the last plane out of Da Nang, we closed the thing down,” says Barry Hartman who retired twice – once an Army Colonel as well as a Brigadeer General in the New York Guard. “That was in ’73.

The pictures everybody sees of the end of the war – that was two years after we left.”

Hartman pointed to the differences between his first tour in Vietnam in 1967 and his last in 1973. “It was kind of quiet when we first got there, but November ended all that. The battle of Dak To. There were periods of absolute terror,” he says. “My camp troop, C-Troop, was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for actions during the Battle of Dak To. And during that whole time, I only had to write one letter home,” he says, his voice choked with emotion. “That’s probably the toughest thing I ever did.”

Now and then. “The end results are the same. The Vietnamese are unified, however you want to define that. The Taliban has got Afghanistan, however you want to define that. The difference was there was an International Peace Treaty at the end of Vietnam signed by the combatants in Paris.

There were also two international commissions set up – you didn’t have any of this in Afghanistan,” Hartman explains. “There were a lot of checkpoints, and it was set up in advance. The peace talks had been going on for some time and we had been moving troops out. Jan. 28, 1973 was the ceasefire. That was when everybody was supposed to stop firing and stay where you are. We closed down Da Nang. On the last airplane out on the tarmac there were about 45 of us. It was a clean leave, but we were watching them. They were building up. We knew it was coming, we knew the North Vietnamese sometime in the future were going to attack,” he says.

As operations officer, Hartman made arrangements for those leaving. “We got them out of country. Some brought their Vietnamese families with them. We had the time to do it, we had the plan to do it, and the leadership let us do it. We had two months trying to get everybody out. We’re going out in the countryside there to try and find the bodies missing in action. We knew, well, a helicopter went down in this general area. We found several of them and we were able to bring the U.S. bodies out. That’s what we did during that period of time.”

Saigon and Da Nang were the two U.S. hubs. “Now this is two years before what everybody understands as the end of the war, and what you see on TV with all the pictures." In March 1973, he joined about four dozen other Army and Navy personnel, boarded a blue bus to the airport, then on to a World Airways charter flight. It was the last plane out of Da Nang. “I couldn’t wait to get back home,” he says.

O’Brien first got to Vietnam at the end of 1971 and started flying in January 1972.” I was just a kid.

It’s funny, I took a MAC flight into Okinawa, met my squadron and didn’t even know where the hangar was. But it started right away. Soon as I hit the ground – boom - fly.”

His squadron consisted of about 15 airplanes and 450 to 500 people who deployed en masse.

“We staged out of Okinawa my first tour, and my airplane had great range. You could fly for 12 hours, so we could cover the whole South China Sea. We could fly low and slow, we had a fourengine turbo prop, shut two off, and we could fly at 200 feet for 10 hours. We were looking at

shipping, looking at what the Soviets were doing, at what the Chinese and North Koreans were doing off the coast. We were used heavily for surveillance, and to see what was going on,” O’Brien says.

“In those early days, we were very basic. The cameras were all hand-held. And they were terrible, which would cause some problems later on when they were looking for intelligence and unhappy with the pictures we were taking. So, then we started taking pictures with the Nikons we bought in Japan when we were on liberty. Those were much better quality. The camera would be taken by anyone who wasn’t flying,” he laughs.

The cockpit consisted of two pilots and a flight engineer. “There were two radar cabinets behind, in the cockpit. It was enough of a surface where you could get your butt on it and go out over the pilot or the co-pilot’s shoulder and take a picture. Some of the most famous pictures we took were taken by our inflight technician. They fix things when they break and he wasn’t having to fix anything so he took the pictures. continues to page 12...

If we located a Soviet ship or a Chinese or North Korean ship, they wanted a lot of intelligence on the ship, so we would have to fly around the ship and take pictures from five different angles, drop a sonobuoy to pick up the engine noise of the ship to see if there was a submarine behind it, things like that. My airplane was

not armored, we didn’t have any guns. We were not really meant for combat. All our fuel was in our wings mostly – 60,000 pounds of jet fuel in our wings.”

Even after Hartman had left Da Nang in 1973, O’Brien says he flew 150 hours per month into the spring of 1975. Operations did not slow down and surveillance flights continued along Vietnam, from Diego Garcia to Iran to

the east coast of Africa watching Soviet ship activity.

“Starting in 1974, the North Vietnamese Army started coming south. They weren’t abiding by any agreement,” O’Brien says.

“My airplane had been upgraded. We had the very first FLIR in the western Pacific – which is Forward-looking infrared camera. So, our airplane was in high demand. We were in the Philippines. I was supposed to fly from the Philippines to Thailand to Diego to Iran when on the morning of April 30, 1975 I was flying from (U.S. Naval Air Station) Cubi Point in the Philippines across south Vietnam to Thailand. And that’s when I ran into the morning of the embassy evac. All the airplanes in the air.

The (USS) Blue Ridge. And all the chaos. And all the radio traffic. Some poor sailor on one of the ships, I never was sure which one, was trying to control all this massive air traffic in the air.

“You had the entire South Vietnamese air force flying anything they could fly trying to land on the ships in the South China Sea, and also trying to go into Thailand. You’ve seen the pictures of the chaos. So many helicopters were coming in to the (USS) Coral Sea that, I read later that they pushed $10 million of our helicopters off to the side, to make room for the ones coming out. The South Vietnamese pilots were being instructed to land on the Blue Ridge or any other carrier that had a helo platform. Land.

Drop your passengers. Then go back out and ditch your helicopter in the water and jump out. And maybe we’ll pick you up,” he says.

“The evacuation started in early March with fixed-wing

Week of September 3 – September 9, 2021 aircraft. They evacuated somewhere between 45 to 50,000 people. When they started to come under some heavy fire they went to helicopters. They evacuated like 7,000 people with helicopters. Incredible. Now the compound – the embassy annex and the Pittman apartment building – basically where some embassy people, some CIA people stayed.

The iconic picture of the helicopter on the roof with the people going up to the roof which some people think is the embassy, is the Pittman building,” O’Brien says.

“The compound where all of these people crammed in and tried to get out was a chaos I think similar to Kabul. There was a code word that had been passed a month before to all our friendlies and our allies in and round the Saigon area that was going to be broadcast on Air America: ‘The temperature in Saigon today is going to be 105,’ followed by the playing of ‘White Christmas.’ The song. Bing Crosby. That’s the code to get to the embassy. Get there.

Get your families there.”

“There’s one more chapter to the Vietnam thing, and that’s the Mayaguez,” Hartman says. “How many? 41?”

“Forty-one,” O’Brien says.

“That’s where my airplane got shot. After three tours and two weeks after the fall of Saigon.”

A picture taken by O’Brien’s inflight tech appeared in both Time and Newsweek.

The final 41 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall represent 25 Air Force pilots and crew, 2 Navy corpsmen, and 14 Marines; these were the men killed in the operation to rescue the crew of the Mayaguez, according to U.S. Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

“We were taking .50-cal. fire from gunboats. There were about

250 Khmer Rouge on the ship, and they were also in the tree line. We were flying between the ship and the island, and I’ve always said: if these guys had been duck hunters, we would have been dead. But all their rounds went through our tail. Terror. It was terror. I never want to forget that day. I really shouldn’t be sitting here talking to you because we were close. We were low and these guys… it was May 13 of ’75.”

O’Brien says the emotional impact of that day didn’t hit him until two years later.

“I was watching a movie, and then I just broke down. But during that day, I remember we all just did our jobs. It didn’t hit me for almost two years later. That’s weird, I know,” he says.

“They didn’t shoot us down.

After I made the initial call, it went all the way back to the White House. And then they were contacting us through this satellite, so I could hear Kissinger’s voice on the radio. They were asking us questions, but they said: you’ve got to stay there. Is the plane still fly-able?” And it was. So they said: you’ve got to keep your eye on the ship and let us know what’s going on because they had the crew hostage. This was an American merchant ship. So we had to go back, and keep looking at it. We went back for another five hours, and they were shooting at us. I called up and asked: How high can a .50-cal. shoot? I didn’t know.

They had to research it. 5,000 feet. That’s what I did. I got to 5,000 feet. They eventually pulled into a different island, Koh Tang Island and that was the island they started bombing and strafing and then the Marines invaded it.

And they lost 41 Marines. Almost instantly, because there were a lot of Khmer Rouge on the island,” O’Brien says.

“The tragedy of it all is they left three Marines behind. In their rifle pits. Firing,” says O’Brien, his voice slowing to a whisper. “They survived for a week by stealing food from the Khmer Rouge. They were eventually captured, tortured and killed by the Cambodians.

And those are the last three names on the wall. Those three marines,” he says. “That’s an awful postscript to that war.”

Coming Soon: Two Chick-fil-A Drive-Thrus in the Capital Region

Saratoga TODAY CAPITAL REGION — Atlanta-based fast-food chain Chick-fil-A has been popping up all over Western and Upstate New York in recent years. By next year, the Capital Region could have two new locations.

Chick-fil-A has submitted plans to the Town of Colonie and the Town of Clifton Park to open 5,000 sq. ft. drive-thru locations.

The chain wants to redevelop the sites of a former Pier 1 Imports at 304 Clifton Park Center and the former Brick House Tavern + Tap at 579 Troy Schenectady Road in Latham. They plan to lease the

1.5-acre property in Clifton Park from CCM Pad Partner LLC, an affiliate of Myron M. Hunt, and the 2.5-acre property in Colonie with the Latham Farms retail plaza. All according to plans filed with the respective towns.

“The Town of Clifton Park is pleased to welcome Chickfil-A, another national brand to our Exit 9 Commerce Area,” said Clifton Park Town Supervisor, Phil Barrett. “We expect the planning process to proceed over the next 60-90 days and the restaurant being open for business in 2022. The time and hard work we have invested to revitalize Exit 9, since I began my tenure as Town Supervisor, has been a successful Photo provided.

initiative with very important fiscal implications for Clifton Park residents and businesses.”

Bohler Engineering out of Albany is representing the company with both planning board applications. The Colonie project will be reviewed by the town’s planning board on Sept. 7, and the Clifton Park project will be reviewed by the town’s planning board on Sept. 14.

Sean M. Maguire, Director of Planning and Economic Development for the Town of Colonie, provided a more detailed

look at what their planning process will look like. The first step is to review the sketch plan submission from Chick-fil-A and provide the chain with feedback and technical comments from various town departments expected to be involved in the project should it advance. Chick-fil-A would then submit an application for a concept plan to be accepted, and then a final plan as well.

“The Town of Colonie is always glad to know that businesses choose to locate here. We have an excellent location in the Capital

Region – truly located at the center of everything,” said Maguire. “We’re especially happy to see existing sites reused and redeveloped – it is a smart thing to do.”

If the projects are approved, construction of the restaurants are expected to take six months.

Chick-fil-A has more than 2,600 locations across the country, with close to 30 locations across New York State. The only Chick-fil-A location in the Capital Region as of now is beyond the security checkpoint at the Albany International Airport.

Elected Officials Oppose National Grid Rate Hike and Fossil Fuel Infrastructure Funding NEW YORK — Thirtysix upstate elected officials have signed onto a letter opposing National Grid’s proposal to raise rates an average of $100/ year for electric and gas customers; the company’s proposal does not comply with New York’s new Climate Law. National Grid is proposing to spend $1.4 billion on new fossil fuel infrastructure and to increase gas sales in its territory, which does not comply with the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) mandated emissions reduction targets. The officials’

letter states the following: “The CLCPA mandates that the state achieve net zero emissions by 2050, necessitating an end to most fossil fuel use by that date. Yet, National Grid is proposing gas infrastructure with the assumption that it will be ‘used and useful’ past 2050.”

As of June 2021, 253,535 residential and 12,914 non-residential upstate National Grid customers were 60 or more days behind on their bills, owing a total of over $408 million to the utility. Customers who self-certify to their utility that they have been financially impacted by the

COVID-19 crisis are protected from shut-offs until the end of this year.

“At a time when most of our residents and small businesses are still struggling to get back on their feet, rate increases of this kind simply cannot be approved,” said Assemblymember John T. McDonald III (District 108). “We also must continue our strong commitment to the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and its goal for a decrease in fossil fuel use. We have to make this a priority in the coming years and encourage and reward energy conservation.”

CanCode Communities Announces Addition to Board of Directors SARATOGA SPRINGS — CanCode Communities, a nonprofit organization creating a new generation of software coders, has announced the addition of Facebook executive Lisa Harris to its board of directors, and the election of Miriam Dushane of Alaant Workforce Solutions and Kyle Bisnett of Microsoft to lead its slate of officers for 2021-22.

The appointments were made at the board’s annual meeting.

Harris is the Director of State and Local Economic Development Policy for Facebook. An upstate New York native, she previously served as Deputy Counsel to the New York State Senate Majority Republican Conference, and in the Executive

Branch of New York state government, where she served four governors in executive roles.

Kitware Software Helps Researchers Understand the Human Brain CLIFTON PARK — Kitware has won a $1.3 million grant from the National Institute of Health’s BRAIN Initiative. The BRAIN Initiative aims to increase the understanding of the human brain through advanced imaging to better treat, cure, and prevent brain disorders. With the funds from the grant, Kitware is developing a tool that uses AI to help researchers analyze images of neuron connectivity over time.

Their next project will be with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Invisible Headlights Program, collaborating with Spectrum Photonics and the University of Hawaii to develop passive 3D sensors for stealthy, nighttime autonomous vehicles.

SSCSD Board of Education Meeting U P DATE S AS O F AUGUS T 26 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs City School District held a Board of Education meeting on Aug. 26 to discuss updates to the 2021-2022 school year reopening plan.

The BOE is working to finalize the school district’s “Stay Open Plan” – the primary objective is to plan for full, in-person learning five days a week for K-12 including specials and electives. Superintendent of Schools Michael Patton thanked school staff for the successful inperson summer school programs and said that the school district will continue to monitor COVID19 locally, using that local data and feedback to adjust the plan.

Guidance received from Saratoga County Public Health Services, CDC, the school physician, and the Department of Education was used to frame the “layer approach” which combines multiple health and safety measures to reduce the spread of COVID on school grounds. Face coverings will be required for everyone indoors and on school transportation, regardless of vaccination status; face coverings are not required outdoors. Social distancing will be maintained at a distance of three feet, and students will be in cohorts or assigned seating to minimize transmission and reduce exposure. Classrooms will

be disinfected twice a week and busses will be disinfected after each run. SSCSD will maintain an appropriate supply of PPE. SSCSD will also continue to hold vaccination clinics, as current guidance from the CDC recommends that everyone who is eligible get vaccinated as soon as possible; the next clinic will be held on Sept. 9. As of the Aug. 26 meeting, the transmission rate in Saratoga County is high with a current 7-day positivity rating of 4.9%. According to the school district, there has been a 2-3% increase each week in vaccination rate for students in the district ages 12-18.

Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment, explained the key takeaways from last school year that helped the district prepare the “Stay Open Plan”.

Cutting noted that engagement and attendance were the two biggest issues with hybrid learning.

There will be no hybrid learning this coming school year, but classes can pivot to Zoom temporally if there is an outbreak. Teachers will continue to use Seesaw and Canvas to post assignments.

“In-person allows us to support them [the students] so much better, and we have learned a lot about instructional practices,” said Cutting. “The primary goal is

to be back in-person where they have support services.”

All students enrolled will continue to have access to free breakfast and lunch throughout the school year. Options are still being discussed for parents who prefer to keep their children home or for medical reasons; home schooling is the only option currently.

Additionally, SSCSD is exploring a potential virtual partnership with the Capital Region BOCES for the 21-22 school year.

Regarding school sports, the only mention was that unvaccinated athletes participating in high-risk sports will be tested for COVID weekly.

Stories for Success

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Five local high school students are hard at work providing literary resources to new families in our community.

Ciara Meyer, Mia Hayes, Annabelle Brueggemann, Maddie Cook, and Ava Kuruzovich were only in eighth grade when they started thinking of ways they could give back to the community. After meeting with their principal at Lake Avenue, “Stories for Success” was born.

These inspiring students are now juniors at Saratoga Springs High School and are looking to expand their organization.

The goal of Stories for Success is to encourage reading and provide reading resources to new parents. The next step for Stories for Success is to become a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Becoming a registered nonprofit would allow them to host more events and expand to other areas in the Capital Region, like Glens Falls or Albany.

“It is important for kids to start reading at a young age.

Promoting reading as they grow helps them learn to read and

read faster,” said Maddie Cook.

“Giving them these resources, even if it’s just two books to read to them when they are newborns to a couple of years old will help them.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — StoryWalks are popping up all over the United States, especially after social distancing practices went into effect due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Story Walk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg Hubbard Library. They can be found in all 50 states and 13 countries. A StoryWalk gives children and families the opportunity to participate in active movement, education, and literacy while exploring

a special place in the community.

Saratoga Springs Public Library and Pitney Meadows Community Farm have partnered to bring a new StoryWalk to the city. This particular walk features the children’s book “Cat’s Colors” by Airlie Anderson.

“The Pitney Meadows Community Farm is thrilled to partner with the Library to incorporate the StoryWalk onto the recreation trails of the Farm,” said Pitney Meadows Education Director, Sarah Miles. “The program is a great new way to

welcome children and families to explore the trails and experience the benefits of time spent outdoors together. We hope it will increase community engagement with the land and encourage future activity at Pitney Meadows, which is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk.”

This particular StoryWalk opened on Sept. 1 at Pitney Meadows (223 West Avenue, Saratoga Springs), and the public can continue to enjoy it until Oct. 31.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Educators and families from Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa, and throughout the Capital District gathered on Saturday at Congress Park pledging to seek and “teach truth” about United States history and inclusive pedagogy.

The action comes as state lawmakers across the country are introducing bills to ban school curricula that include information about the role of racism, sexism, heterosexism, and other oppression in U.S. history.

The program began with a teach-in at the Solomon Northup historical marker on the southwest corner of Broadway and Congress Street with Rachel Seligman, then moved to Congress Park for artmaking activities with C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios and the Tang Museum. Conversations with families and educators took place through noon, and spread throughout the community with MLK Saratoga’s walking tour, and free admission to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Several states, including MO, TX, ID, AR, IA, LA, NH, OK, RI, WV, AZ, and NC have targeted such curricula offered by the New York Times 1619 Project, Southern Poverty Law Center, Black Lives Matter at School, and the Zinn

Education Project. Meanwhile, the New York State Board of Regents passed a framework this past spring to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the curriculum.

Saratoga Educational Equity Network is organized around the belief that each and every student, family, and faculty member in the Saratoga Springs City School District should be seen. SEEN is committed to dismantling systemic racism, promoting intersectional justice, and confronting bias in the Saratoga Springs City School District.

C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing a space where the benefits of artmaking impact both the individual and the community as a whole. ’m always impressed at how quickly the days get shorter this time of year. We’re losing daylight at a rate of almost 3

minutes a day! It adds up day after day. There are signs of fall everywhere. The asters are beginning to flower in the meadows.

The hummingbirds will be gone soon. All these are indications that our glorious growing season will be coming to a frosty end. You would think that this would be a quiet time for gardeners. Not at all!

There are bulbs to plant and it’s a great time to plant trees and shrubs that are on season end clearance at the garden centers. Cool weather makes it a great time to catch up on any lingering landscaping projects.

Most of us have more time to devote to garden tasks in September.

In spring, with all the preparation for the vegetable garden, raking the lawn and other pressing chores, it can be hard to find time to keep up.

Rainy spring weather can also make it difficult to accomplish all you wish to. Many of the gardening chores that you’d normally think of doing in spring can actually be taken care of now.

One task that I like to tackle in fall is the dividing and transplanting of perennials. Most of our perennial flowers are just about finished for the season. They go dormant as frost approaches. This is a great time to make improvements and adjustments to our flowerbeds and borders.

You may have underestimated how large a plant would get and need to move it. You may have some perennials that have become mature and need to be divided. This is a great time to take advantage of cool, crisp “work weather” to get a jump on next spring.

For instance, I’ve got some daylilies and hosta that are in need of dividing. It is a good idea to have the new location ready to receive your transplants before you lift them from their present spot. Dig your holes and add your soil amendments. I add Bio-Tone since it contains all the nutrients as well as soil organisms to get the new plants off to a great start. If you have sandy soil, the addition of compost will improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture.

Next, slice all the way around the plant you wish to divide with a sharp spade and lift it from the soil. If you’re moving it to a new location, simply plant it and water it in well. If you need to divide the plant, simply slice the clump apart (as with hosta) or gently pull the clump apart (as with daylilies). Sometimes this seems a bit brutal but remember most perennial plants NEED to be divided every few years to remain

healthy and vigorous.

Remember your gardening friends when you’re dividing your perennials. I always set a few small divisions aside to share. My friends share with me so, there’s always something new for all of us to enjoy.

Having an extra cache of the foods your household uses most eases the emotional and economic stresses that unforeseen disruptions can bring.

But don’t pull out an old family canning recipe and that hand-me-down pressure canner just yet.

Before preserving your garden’s harvest or buying locally-grown fruits and vegetables in bulk while they’re available, you need to put time into learning how to do it safely, cautions Saratoga County Cooperative Extension Food and Nutrition Educator Diane Whitten.

“Many cases of botulism are from home canning, so if you’re going to get into canning, there are some real serious food safety issues you need to be aware of,” she said.

CAN-DO & CAN DON’TS Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by improperly canned food.

You can’t see it or taste it.

Low-acid foods such as green beans and corn are common sources for cases of foodborne botulism. Low-acid foods, which includes all vegetables, meats, poultry and seafood, must be canned using a pressure canner (not a boiling water bath canner) to reach a temperature hot enough to kill the heat-resistant botulism spores. Botulism will not survive in high-acid foods, including fruit and acidified vegetables, such as salsa and pickles which can be safely canned in a boiling water canner.

Using a safe research-based recipe is also important for food preservation. Many examples you’ll find online are not USDA approved.

Instead, for up-to-date recipes and information, go to the National Center for Home Food Preservation website at nchfp.uga.edu FREEZING FACTS There are three things to keep in mind even if you think you already know how to freeze foods: 1. To get the best quality vegetables from your freezer, blanch them in boiling water beforehand. This inactivates the enzymes that cause

Fermentation is a short-term food preservation method that will last four to six months in the refrigerator. Examples include flavorful sauerkraut, kimchi, and fermented dill pickles.

n Wednesday afternoons under the shade of the south pavilion in High Rock Park, you can find Janine Stockin, also known as Jai, owner of Nine Pine Soup & Design, behind a table of thoughtfully displayed products.

Pine cones adorn a table with jars of white pine needles, teas, and oils. Homemade soup broth gently steams nearby. Tree branches, carefully woven with colorful yarn, are placed around the space. The art of decorating these branches is known as Ojo de Dios or God’s Eye; a traditional Mexican craft that symbolizes peace, protection, and prosperity. Jai handmakes each piece in various sizes and colors meant to inspire meditation and a sense of calmness.

The main focus of her business is the needles of the white pine tree, a conifer traditionally used for lumber and sap. In this case, Jai uses the pine needles to brew tea and oils rich in vitamins and antioxidants.

Jai sought a spot as a vendor with the Saratoga Farmers’ Market to share the many benefits of white pine needles with the community. She has been studying plants since age 14 and pursued an education, earning a degree in Botany and Earth Science. In January 2019, Jai became inspired by information on white pine from well-known herbalists like Susan Weed and wildfoodhealthboosters.com.

White pine has a rich history with Iroquois roots and is known as the “Tree of Peace” for helping to end a conflict between the Five Nations. INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• ½ gallon water • 2 cups fresh green pine needles* • 1-2 tbsp Celtic sea salt OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS: • 1 tbsp red onion*, chopped • 2 tbsp jalapeno pepper*, chopped • 1 small carrot*, sliced

• ½ cup Chinese cabbage*, chopped • ¼ cup chopped potato*, chopped • ¼ cup fresh corn* • Or any mild-tasting in-season vegetables (zucchini, squash, green beans, kohlrabi, mushrooms)

INSTRUCTIONS: Boil the water. Pour boiling water into a pot with the pine needles and cover with a lid. Let it steep for ½ an hour. Remove the pine needles and add salt to taste. Add desired vegetables and cook until tender. Serve as an appetizer or morning elixir.

Hello my Foodie Friends !

The summer went by so quickly! September is a beautiful month. Not only does it mark cooler days and evenings, it is also a harvest month.

Seeing the ripening apples on the trees reminds me that it’s Back-toSchool time. Who doesn’t like a crisp sweet apple in the Fall? So many

by John Reardon delicious apples are grown in this region. Many of you may already for Saratoga TODAY know this, but the apple is New York’s state fruit. Another fun fact is New York is the second-largest apple producing state in the United States, averaging 25 million bushels of production annually with varieties that include; McIntosh, Empire, Red Delicious, Cortland, Golden Delicious, Rome, Crispin, Gala, Fuji, and many others.

Did you recently go apple picking and now don’t know what to do with all those apples? Sure it’s great to eat an apple as a snack on its own (or maybe dunked in salted caramel sauce), but you are probably in need of some apple recipes so they do not go to waste. I swear, apples sometimes multiply in the bags after picking them... that, or I just don’t realize how many apples I’ll truly end up with when I pick a bushel. Making desserts and dishes with apples is endless. There are so many ways to prepare apples like; Apple sauce, apple butter, apple pie, poached apples, caramel apples, apple cake, apple muffins, apple cider donuts (yum), apple chutney, or even apples in a Sangria.

When we get our bushel of apples home, well, first we eat some of them raw – delicious! Then we get creative and make lots of tasty creations with our apple picks. And of course, we use the best tools.

There are cool culinary tools available to help you with your apple creations, At Compliments to the Chef, Your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store, we have apple peeling machines, apple slicers, mandolins, and even cookie cutters. Cookie cutters are a fun way to dress up a dessert, or get kids involved and eating new foods. Cutting apples into stars, hearts, or even letters is tedious but a fun surprise to include in their

school lunch for special occasions. A mandolin lets you cut apples into different widths or with crimped edges. It’s great for making the base of an apple sandwich and can also dress up any snack plate. If you want to secure the apple, but get rid of the core, use an apple corer. This distinctive tool easily removes the core and makes disposal quick and effortless. The unique leveler splits in half for easy release after you twist or push the corer through the apple.

So, how do you like them apples? Have a wonderful time with your family and friends. Enjoy the harvest moon while listening to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” (one of our favorite songs). Remember my Foodie Friends, “Life Happens in the Kitchen” under the harvest moon.

INGREDIENTS • 1 pound cream cheese, at room temperature

• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided

• 3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs

• 2 large eggs, at room temperature

• 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided

• 3/4 cup granulated sugar

• 8 large apples

• 1/4 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg, divided

• Caramel sauce, for serving

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place 1 pound of cream cheese and crack 2 large eggs in a large bowl and let sit at room temperature until the cream cheese is softened, about 1 hour. Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

2. Cut 1/4 inch off the top of 8 apples. Core (hollow) out the inside of the apples, leaving 1/2 inch of flesh around the bottom and edges.

3. Melt 4 tablespoons unsalted butter in a small bowl. Transfer 2 tablespoons to another bowl, add 1/4 teaspoon of the ground cinnamon and 1/8 teaspoon of the ground nutmeg, and stir to combine.

Generously brush the inside flesh of each apple with this mixture. Transfer the apples to the baking sheet.

4. Add 3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs to the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and stir until combined. Sprinkle a heaping teaspoon of mixture into each apple. Set aside the remaining mixture.

5. Add 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, remaining 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and remaining 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg to the cream cheese and eggs and beat together until smooth. Carefully spoon the filling into each apple until filled to 1/2-inch from the top.

6. Bake until the apples are softened and the filling is golden brown on top, 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool completely before serving. When ready to serve, sprinkle with the remaining graham cracker mixture and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

48th Annual Adirondack Balloon Festival The festival takes place Thursday to Sunday, September 23 - 26, in multiple locations. The event is free. Festival merchandise, one of the event’s biggest fundraisers, will be for sale at select events.

This year, the festival cannot allow vendors, children’s activities, or the Open Door breakfast. Pilots can’t take paid passengers this year. At the airport, you can attend a drive-through moonglow to observe 40 tethered balloons on display, lit up from within.

There will also be a live band, 8-10 balloons, and possibly fireworks display at the East Field.

Local Historic “Me Too” Story

BALLSTON SPA — Boho Chic Boutique will host a Meet & Greet featuring a silent auction and live music to benefit the short film “LAURINA” on Sept 13 from 4-9 p.m.

The film is based on the true story of Laurina Ecobelli, a beloved Ballston Spa resident and longtime owner of Ecobelli’s Tam O’Shanter Inn. As a teen in the 1920’s, she was involved in a sensational trial after she was abused by her stepfather and left traumatized and pregnant.

Her courageous testimony helped to convict her abuser and resulted in a landmark judgment. She used her experience and strength to subsequently help generations of silent victims.

“Laurina” is based on the journals of Laurina (Laura) Ecobelli.

While enjoying a successful musical crusade of touring, recording, and numerous television and radio appearances in his homeland, he received an invitation from Buddy Guy’s management to appear at the infamous Legends in Chicago. After making that long initial trek and taking the stage with Buddy Guy, subsequent trips and eventual relocation to his new American home , Charles worked the entire Chicago blues circuit, performing with the likes of Phil Guy, James Cotton, Eddy Clearwater, Junior Wells, George Baze, as well as touring with blues legend, Jimmy Dawkins.

A nine-time Grammy elected artist, Charles will perform at free local concert 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at Nanola, located at 2639 Route 9, Ballston Spa.

Children’s Museum at Saratoga and Children’s Museum of Science and Technology Plan Merger SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Children’s Museum at Saratoga (CMAS) and The Children’s Museum of Science and Technology (CMOST) announced they have entered into a formal management agreement, with the intent to merge in the future.

The two organizations will initially continue under their own brand identities as they work toward a combined entity, joint programming and a new shared location at the Lincoln Bathhouse in Saratoga State Park.

Under the new agreement, CMAS will manage all aspects of operations, programming, and administration for CMOST, reducing overhead and redundant costs.

“We have an opportunity ahead to expand our programming and reach more students and families as a truly regional organization,” Sarah Smith, Executive Director for the Children’s Museum at Saratoga (CMAS) said, in a statement.

“We can deliver our programming in a variety of settings–at our museum in Saratoga,

in classrooms throughout the Capital Region, with community partners, and online.”

Together, the two museums serve 100,000 people annually from approximately thirteen counties in upstate New York. There are no changes planned to staffing or programming at this time.

CMOST is in the process of refurbishing and relocating exhibits and will not reopen their location in the Rensselaer Technology Park, which has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic.

LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George Arts Project’s Courthouse Gallery presents “Blind Visionaries: work by The Seeing with Photography Collective.”

The exhibition will be installed in the gallery Sept. 8 – 19 and is a collaboration with the Seeing with Photography Collective, a pioneering group of visually impaired photographers.

The visually impaired or blind photographer works with a photographer assistant and shares what they want to create based on a vision in their mind’s eye. What results are riveting, surreal images that have helped these seemingly disabled artists to heal through their work. The Collective’s work has been exhibited worldwide and can be seen in the book Shooting

Blind, published by Aperture.

In conjunction with this exhibition the Lake George Arts Project will present a live performance during our Lake George Jazz Weekend, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17 in Shepard Park.

The Performance in Shepard Park, and the Courthouse Gallery exhibition are free. This exhibition is funded in part by the Town and Village of Lake George; The Gruskin Group, The New York State Council on the Arts and LGAP members.

CAMBRIDGE — Hubbard Hall Center for the Arts and Education and Caffè Lena have announced a new partnership to bring after school music programs to students in Washington County.

"Our goal is to give kids a new way to connect with each other, and to put an instrument in their hands that will be like a friend for life. Hubbard Hall is a community arts center with deep roots and I can't imagine a better partner for this style of teaching," said Sarah Craig, Executive Director of Caffè Lena, in a statement.

Hubbard Hall hosts the Caffè Lena School of Music After School Program for the fall semester in Cambridge.

Presidential Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco Named First Visiting Artist at the SPAC School of the Arts; Community Invited to Attend Sept. 18 Opening “Blanco’s contributions to the fields of poetry and the arts have already paved a path forward for future generations of writers . . . SARATOGA SPRINGS — Presidential Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco will become the first visiting artist at the SPAC School of the Arts (SOTA), Saratoga Performing Arts Center announced Thursday.

SPAC SOTA is a new, multidisciplinary school dedicated to dance, music, and theatre, with additional offerings in literary arts, visual arts, and media arts, as well as serving as a mentor for the 2022 Adirondack Trust Company Festival of Young Artists.

Driven by a desire to examine the essence of place and belonging, Blanco explores through his work his cultural identity as a Cuban-American and how we are shaped by experiences, memories, and our complex stories. As inaugural poet for President Obama and the first-ever Education Ambassador for the Academy of American poets, Richard Blanco will bring his passion for inspiring students through the close reading, writing and performing

of poems. In collaboration with faculty, he will infuse poetry into the School’s multi-genre arts curriculum, which aims to provide further access to under-represented art forms, as well as to deepen the students’ connections to each other and to the world around them.

“Richard Blanco is one of the most deeply affecting, insightful poets today and we are delighted to bring him to Saratoga as our first visiting artist. Guiding an exploration of the larger questions of ‘where do I belong’ and ‘what is home,’ he will help us examine deeper issues that spark conversation and understanding on cultural identity and diversity -teaching our aspiring poets how to connect to the heart of human experience,” SPAC President and CEO Elizabeth Sobol said, in a statement. “Over the past several years we have expanded SPAC’s mission to incorporate literary arts into our programming.

Richard will bring poetry to our

school curriculum, naturally infusing elements of music, dance and theatre into its teaching.”

As the literary arts mentor for the 2022 Festival of Young Artists, which will follow the same theme, Blanco will select the poetry submissions to be featured in the festival. He will also mentor and help develop the crafts of three poetry finalists who will be chosen to recite their work on SPAC’s amphitheater stage alongside the inaugural poet.

“As an immigrant child from a working-class family, I had very little access to the arts while I was growing up. As such, I am a champion of arts education and have found a perfect fit with SPAC’s School of the Arts. They believe—as I do—that the arts should not be a luxury, but rather, a necessary part of learning,” said Richard Blanco, Presidential Inaugural Poet and Visiting Artist at the SPAC School of the Arts.

Following his poetry readings, families with children ages 4-18 are invited to participate in classes in music (ages 4-6), dance (ages 7-12), and theatre (ages 13-18) in addition to meeting the faculty and enjoying refreshments. The event will be held outside in the School courtyard or inside the Lewis A. Swyer Studios in the case of inclement weather.

SARATOGA WRAP UP Good Performances and Smiles All Around

T

he 2021 racing season at Saratoga Race Course is coming to a close and New York racing moves to Belmont Park and all racing aims towards the Breeders’ Cup in San Diego in November. By almost any measure the 2021 Saratoga meet was a success for racing and the New York Racing Association.

While the meet started amidst a backdrop of uncertainty due to Covid it did so successfully drawing enthusiastic crowds who had missed the 2020 season. So much of the Saratoga meet is about maintaining long distance friendships and acquaintances and opening weekend really felt like a homecoming as people greeted each other with smiles and waves (if not handshakes). Two years being a long time, the bulk of conversations were catch up in nature. Everywhere people could be

heard inquiring of the health and well-being of those attending and those who were missing. To many the social nature of the meet rivals the on-track performances in importance, and the meet was filled with numerous fundraisers for racing-related charities, including Jockey Kendrick Carmouche again stirring his famous gumbo for the benefit of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

Saratoga did well to absorb the influx of racing fans.

While some restaurants maintained their top-class reputation, others struggled with staffing and other shortages leading many to close on Monday and/or Tuesday nights to permit their workers a day of rest.

The night life in the town rebounded but tragically, violence struck Caroline Street with two local men criminally charged in connection with the death of a racing fan in a nighttime altercation.

Many other traditional events returned to the schedule after missing 2020 due to Covid. The 100th FasigTipton Select Sale proved a success with each of the two nightly sessions producing big crowds and a yearling sold for more than $1 million. Notably, for the first time a yearling was purchased with cryptocurrency – an old tradition meets the modern economy.

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame saw two classes inducted this year since the 2020 ceremony was cancelled. Among the new entrants were trainers Mark Casse and Todd Pletcher and Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Congratulation to all.

The 40 days of racing produced more than $800 million in mutuel handle; a large increase impelled by increased use of betting aps. Time and again I had conversations with casual bettors who said they were previously reluctant to bet from home using account betting but “they had to last year” and now were fully converted to their use. With the expanded television coverage nationally on Fox network NYRABETS, the NYRA account betting platform, produced increased handle and daily participation by race fans even on days spent elsewhere. The actual racing produced some memorable finishes by both established and upcoming stars. Controversial trainer Bob Baffert saw his exceptional filly – Gamine win the Ballerina with ease while standout three-yearold Essential Quality won both the Jim Dandy and the marquee Travers to establish his claim as three-yearold of the year. The reputation of Saratoga as “The Graveyard of Champions” stayed true to form when Maracuja upset Malathaat in the Coaching Club American ‘Oaks only to see Malathaat avenge that defeat by winning the Alabama. In addition, Knicks Go, Letruska and Wit all established themselves as leaders of their respective divisions with outstanding performances during the meet.

Jump trainer Keri Brion was the new training star of the meet dominating the jump races including the newly named Jonathan Sheppard Stakes.

The jockey leader was Luis Saez who may break the all-time win record of 68 followed by the usual strong performances by the Ortiz brothers – Irad and Jose.

The meet was not without controversy, as the New York Racing Association’s attempt to ban Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert from entering horses at the meet was temporarily stayed by a federal court until he could have a fair hearing.

Baffert entered a small handful of runners during the meet winning the aforementioned Ballerina. In addition, a few decisions by the racing stewards regarding disqualifications (or

lack thereof) for interference struck veteran race watchers as inconsistent. In a stark reminder that not everyone loves horse racing there were organized demonstrations on some of the bigger days against horse racing by groups who believe it cruel and advocate its end. While noisy the demonstrations were peaceful and orderly in nature.

Sadly, the Covid Delta variant did not leave racing unscathed as numerous racing participants, personalities and employees contracted Covid later in the meet with NYRA employees resuming mask wearing during the second half of August.

All in all, the 2021 Saratoga race meet was a successful return to racing in front of a live audience and the continuation of more than a century of tradition. The New York Racing Association, all of its employees, all of the horsemen and horsewomen who run their horses and all who support racing should be commended for their efforts and proud of their success. (Its only 44 weeks away from opening day 2022).

A Career that Reflects Award-Winning Writing, Legends, Humor, and Respect Four years later after “retiring,” Tim Wilkin continues to cover the sport that he loves

When people retire from their careers, especially ones that cover more than four decades, they enjoy the rest of their lives doing something else.

That’s not the case for Tim Wilkin.

Forty years later, Wilkin continues to drive his golf cart around Saratoga Race Course every morning looking for notes and stories, as well as taking pictures and video for social media, for The Times Union.

He doesn’t do it for the money. He does it for the love of the sport.

“As soon as I got here, I fell in love with it. It’s hard not to,” he said. “The morning is the best part of the day. There is no question in my mind.”

After 35 years of writing for the Times Union, Wilkin took a buyout offer in December 2020. While many people equate a buyout to retirement, Wilkin is not one of them.

“I wouldn’t call it retirement,” he said with a touch of humor.

Wilkin has always had a sense of humor by sharing entertaining stories or engaging in light banter, even during the long days at Saratoga as it was the case two weeks ago when he came to the track at 5:30 a.m. to watch a workout from recent Travers winner Essential Quality. From there, he stayed on the grounds for the rest of the day to cover the Alabama Stakes, handicap Sunday’s races, and work on a feature story.

“I have never grown up, but I think that’s important,” the 65-year-old Wilkin said. “You cannot take yourself too seriously in life. You’re not here long enough to get bent out shape. Have fun. Live your life. Do your work. What else is there? Right?”

Wilkin never thought his career path went the direction of covering Saratoga, the Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup. He has covered every Saratoga racing season and the Travers with one exception – the 1997 Travers. He missed that edition because of a wedding in Canandaigua.

“I said to somebody, ‘If you invite me to your wedding, I will get you a glass duck,’” the Rochester native said. “They invited me to their wedding. I missed the Travers. They got a glass duck.”

Still, for his dedication and diligent work, Wilkin has received several honors with the most-recent being the 2019 Walter Haight Award for Career Excellence in Turf Writing from the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters.

“I never thought my path would take me here, but it did and here I am,” he said.

Wilkin’s path to covering horse racing started in 1979 when he graduated from St. Bonaventure. His brother Jeff, who was working for the Post Star at the time, gave him a contact at The Saratogian for a position in the sports department.

After spending his first season of putting together the Pink Sheet, Wilkin started covering Saratoga on the backstretch and the press box. Just like with many new reporters, Wilkin got caught up in the awe of several established and award-winning turf writers, including the legendary Red Smith.

“I was sitting next to him and said, ‘I am sitting next to the great Red Smith,’” Wilkin said. “I was asking myself, ‘What do I say to him? Should I do anything?’

I was sitting there and thinking what I should do.”

Wilkin continued, “All of the sudden, he said to me, ‘Excuse me. Can you do me a favor?’ I said, “Yes, Mr. Smith. Sure, anything.’ He said, ‘Can you go down there and get me a piece of pie?’ My big conversation with Red Smith centered around me going to the lunch area to get him a piece of cherry pie.”

At the same time, Wilkin found some of the legends in the press box to be helpful. This is included the great Joe Hirsch, who later invited Wilkin to the Wishing Well for dinner every racing season.

“Joe Hirsch was a saint to young reporters who were trying to find a way into this game,” Wilkin said. “He went out of his way to help you. Whenever I had a question, no matter how stupid it might be, he would look up stuff in books. He provided so much guidance.”

Wilkin left The Saratogian for the Times Union in 1985. Along with covering the Albany Patroons, RPI hockey, a few of Mike Tyson’s early fights and other assignments, he joined a solid group of horse racing writers that included two-time Red Smith Award winner Matt Graves and Tim Layden, who also became an award-winning sports writer through his work at Sports Illustrated.

“I was right behind Matt on the coverage. I was his henchman,” Wilkin said. “I did most of the barn stuff and he did the races in the afternoon.”

Along with providing horse racing coverage for more than 20 years, Wilkin and Graves also developed a special friendship, often filled with humorous stories and one-liners, that went beyond the Saratoga press box.

“We had a lot of fun up there,” Wilkin said. “We got our work done, but the press box was also a fun place. Matt tried to be semi-serious, but he was one of the funniest people who I ever met in my life. He was so quick with a quip.”

After Graves’s retirement in 2007, Wilkin found another person to fill that humor: Mike Jarboe, who

was a Times Union copy editor with an interest in horse racing and his fiddle. For Wilkin and some readers, Jarboe could have been considered a fictional character.

“Jarboe was like the village idiot, but I say that in a loving way because he loved Saratoga and being up here,” Wilkin said. “He envisioned being a celebrity and people noticing him. I remember one time going through the clubhouse and someone came up to me and asked if Jarboe really existed. They thought he was a cartoon character.”

Their humorous presence in the press box quickly faded within a four-month period as Jarboe passed away on Sept. 19, 2017, followed by Graves on Jan. 27, 2018.

Then, another year later, Wilkin also lost another special person who was part of his career: Marylou Whitney, who enjoyed being the Times Union guest handicapper on Whitney Day and winning “a bunch of them” against Wilkin.

Over a four-decade career, there is one thing that Wilkin has never lost from those in the sport: respect. Owners such as Mike Repole and Jack Knowlton, Hall of Fame trainers like Nick Zito, Bill Mott and recent inductee Todd Pletcher, and other fellow writers have appreciated Wilkin’s work.

“I never thought I would be here this long. I started and ended my career at the Times Union,” Wilkin said.

“When I get respect from people who cover this sport, that makes it really good. It is a really a good deal.”

Accuracy in word choice is a key to effective communication. In your daily writing and speaking, try to make sure you use the right word in the right place with the right spelling. By doing so, its effect will affect your communication in a positive way. This quick weekly tip will help you filter the confusion in some of our daily word choices.

This Week: Official, Officious Official, as an adjective, means authorized or formal. As a noun, it means a person who holds an office.

Here is an official announcement: schools will be closed Friday. The official always makes the final ruling.

Officious means meddling in other people’s affairs.

They opposed any officious interference with personal matters.

3rd Annual Bob Best Memorial Golf Tournament

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 3rd Annual Bob Best Memorial Golf Tournament is fast-approaching, but there is still time left to register.

In 2018, after Bob Best’s sudden passing, his family and friends created the Bob Best Memorial Scholarship to benefit the Saratoga Regional YMCA, along with the Bob Best Memorial Golf Tournament.

This year’s tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 24 at McGregor Links Country Club (359 Northern Pines Road, Wilton) with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.; a dinner and silent auction will follow. The cost to enter in the tournament is $125 per person/$500 per foursome; dinner only is $40 per person.

Registration and payments must be received by Friday, Sept. 10.

Proceeds from the golf tournament fund the scholarship.

Partnering with Saratoga Builders Association, $1,000 from the scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who is pursuing a career in the building trades. The remaining amount benefits the SRYMCA. Bob and his wife, Lisa, and family were long-time members of the YMCA. Through their experience, they saw firsthand the great benefits that Y membership and programs provides a family. Lisa found through her role as a teacher that at-risk-students who were given financial assistance to the Y benefited from the positive influence the Y had on them through their programs. To date, the fund has raised close to $30,000.

Steve Butler, Saratoga Springs Branch Executive Director, listed the after-school care, the nine-week summer camp, and the daycare/ childcare as examples of what the funds assists families with.

“The funds offset the cost for caregivers, whether it’s 100%, 50%, etc.,” said Butler. “We won’t turn anyone away just because they can’t afford it.”

Malta 5K & 10K Road Race Varsity Boys Soccer Sports Scores Returns September 11 SCHUYLERVILLE V. TAMARAC MALTA — The 12th annual 5K and 10K Road Race will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Malta’s two technology parks: NYSERDA’s Saratoga Technology and Energy Park & Luther Forest Technology Campus. The 10k will begin at 8:15 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8:30 a.m.

Schuylerville hosted Tamarac on Tuesday, Aug. 31 in a non-league opener for both squads. The Horses Ryan Piteri would find his first of 3 goals on Tuesday 10 minutes in to set the pace for the home team. Liam Armstrong, Lucas Cotrell, and Chris Jones would round out the scoring, while Griffin Brophy would make a couple nice saves to keep the clean sheet. Two Capital District Athletes Named to U.S. National Women’s Field Hockey Team

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kelsey Briddell (Saratoga Springs HS ’14) and Carrie Hanks (Niskayuna HS ’14) were recently named to the 2021-2022 U.S. National Women’s Field Hockey Team. This marks the first time two local athletes have been selected to the national team.

Briddell and Hanks were selected after a competitive tryout period involving inter-squad contests, two-a-day practices, strength and conditioning tests, and international competition.

Briddell was a four-year standout at UAlbany (2018), playing a role as a freshman in the school’s first-ever Final Four appearance in the NCAA Division I National Championships.

Hanks started every game in her four-year career at the University of Maryland and helped lead the Terrapins to the national championship game her senior year.

The U.S. National Team recently concluded a four-game overseas schedule playing two games each against Belgium and

defending 2016 Olympic champion Great Britain. Briddell earned her first “caps” in international competition, starting in three of those contests. Hanks, meanwhile, remained home working closely with the national team strength coach and physical therapist rehabbing from foot surgery; she had extensive international experience in 2019.

Briddell and Hanks were both All-State high school field hockey athletes, as well as teammates, on the highly regarded ADK Club Team for several years.

ADK – under the coaching of UAlbany head coach Phil Skyes, and his wife, Jean – has produced an extensive list of Division I field hockey athletes.

The U.S. National Team is presently in Charlotte where they will continue training through December. The team will be traveling to Santiago, Chile in January followed by a European tour.

Both Briddell and Hanks have trained at Saratoga Peak Performance under the direction of Kelsey’s father, Dr. Bryan Briddell.

“Kelsey and Carrie are unquestionably two of the hardest-working athletes I’ve ever had the pleasure to train,” said Briddell.

“What separates them from other hard-working athletes, however, it is their incredible focus and attention to detail. Both are intrinsically motivated and are always putting extra time in with their conditioning and stick skill. Their nutrition is impeccable, they get their required sleep, and they’re excellent at recovery strategies. You can’t ask for two more coachable athletes.”

Intro to Ice Skating Build your skills! From your first steps on the ice through advanced moves, the Intro to Ice Skating Program will prepare you for more specialized forms of ice skating.

The program is for ages 3 and up. Early fall dates are Tuesdays starting Oct. 5 through Nov. 9 from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. Fall dates from Nov. 16 through Dec. 21 (no Nov. 27) are – choose one – Tuesdays from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. or Saturdays from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Intro to Ice Skating will be held at the Vernon and Weibel Ice Rinks (30 Weibel Avenue). You will need: snow or fleece pants; warm jacket; mittens or gloves; bike, ski, or hockey helmet (required for all). A responsible adult must accompany beginning skaters on the ice to assist with instruction. Adults do not need skates.

Field Hockey Drive up your skills! The Field Hockey League is geared towards the individual looking to learn the sport through drills and team play. Tuesday’s session will focus on skill development and Saturday’s sessions will focus on team play.

The Field Hockey League is for ages 8 to 14. The league will run from Sept. 14 to Oct. 23 on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Rec. Center Field (15 Vanderbilt Ave). Players will need a water, stick, shin guards, and mouth guard; the

These programs are designed for a caregiver and child to engage in together, socialize, learn, and meet new friends.

Soccer: A developmental league that combines practice and game time in one session. Volunteer parent coaches are needed. Saturdays from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. for ages 3-4 yrs. and 10:40 to 11:15 a.m. for ages 4-6 yrs.

Youth Intro: Teaches the fundamentals of archery, safety, and equipment use for ages 8-13 yrs. Saturdays from 2 to 3 p.m. or Sundays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Roc-N-Tots and Baby Jamboree: Fun music and movement classes. Roc-N-Tots is Wednesdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. for ages 18 months to 2 yrs. and 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for ages 2-5 yrs. Baby Jamboree is Thursday from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m.

Outdoor Story Time: A new class that combines a story time with activities and an art project. Thursdays from 10 to 10:30 a.m. for toddlers and 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. for preschoolers.

Toddler Sensory Play Group: A new outdoor play group where children can explore fun and messy sensory activities. Tuesdays from 10 to 10:30 a.m. for ages 18 months to 3 years.

Dance Classes Tiny Tutus: Children learn the basics of ballet in this beginner class for ages 3-5 yrs. Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:10 p.m., Saturdays from 10:10 to 10:55 a.m. or 11:05 to 11:50 a.m.

Twinkle Toes: Ballet and tap classes are combined in this class for ages 4- 6 yrs. Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m. or Saturdays from 12:05 to 1:05 p.m.

T-ball and Baseball: These leagues combine practice and skills building with a game at the end. Volunteer parent coaches are needed. T-ball (4-6 yrs.) on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Baseball (6-8 yrs.) on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 12 to 2 p.m. Start time for leagues will alternate based on the game schedule.

Sports Skills and Drills Little Rookies: This class introduces a different sport every week for children ages 3-5 yrs. Tuesdays from 12:30 to 1 p.m. or Saturdays from 9 to 9:30 a.m.

Basketball: Classes for all ages and skill levels. Mondays: ages 4-5 yrs. from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m., ages 6-7 yrs. from 4:50 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays: ages 8-10 yrs. from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Beyond the Basics (ages 10-14 yrs.) from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturdays: girls’ basketball ages 6-9 yrs. from 9 to 9:50 a.m., girls’ basketball ages 10-12 yrs. from 9:50 to 10:30 a.m.
