SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Aug. 25 Residents of the Saratoga community are welcomed to help raise money for Kaitlin Bowman who has lost all mobility due to Late Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (NCL).

This is actually the 10th annual barbeque to support Bowman.

On Aug. 2 Bowman celebrated her 13th birthday. According to Becky Manning, Bowman’s

mother, the life expectancy for those with Late Infantile NCL is eight to 12 years old.

“She had her first seizure two weeks before her third birthday.

Before that she was totally average, a healthy kid and nothing was wrong. So she had her first seizure in 2008 and was diagnosed in 2009 and at her diagnosis they told me she wouldn’t live to see 10; and the medical books they say between eight and 12, so now being 13 my baby is officially not a See Kaitlin continued on pg. 3

Where: CITY HALL Who: The Lions of City Hall Q. How long have you been in Saratoga Springs?

A. Since 1871, when Town Hall building was built.

Q. Town Hall?

A. Saratoga was still a town then. It didn’t become a city until 1915. We were there when the city was incorporated as well.

Q. “‘We” meaning you two lions? Do you have names? How can people tell you apart?

A. Some people call us “Nobility” and “Magnanimity,” some call us “Leo and Lynn,” - but, I don’t know where those names came from. We’re both cast-iron sculptures, but we are different. Facing City Hall, I’m on the left with my right paw leaning out. Over on the right side, the left paw leans out. We were placed this way, on either side, to face the center and see everything that’s going on.

Q. There must be a lot that you have seen?

A. Everything that happens in the city starts here: from presenting building plans to paying parking tickets, getting marriage licenses to the arraignment of people charged with crimes. You name it, we’ve seen it. The mayor and City Council members have their offices here as well and up on the top floor is the Music Hall where they hold dances and forums and where the American Bankers Association was founded back in the 1870s.

Q. How has Saratoga changed during your time here?

A. Wow, where to begin? From the heyday of the grand hotels to the invention of the automobile.

Imagine this: when City Hall was built it cost about $110,000 and was topped by a bell and clock towers.

That bell weighed more than 5,000 pounds and when it was rung, it would shake the whole building.

Q. What happened to the bell tower?

A. It was removed in 1934 for safety reasons. Probably a good thing too. Can’t imagine what would happen if the bell tower was struck by lightning. Around the same time, us two lions were also removed and separated. One eventually made it to the East Side Recreation Field, one to the West Side Rec, where it was placed in the middle of the wading pool.

Q. When did you find your way back?

A. Ten years ago. They renovated the front of City Hall, installed bronze railings, custom granite, a mahogany doorway and a heated staircase – which is why the winter snow doesn’t stick to the sidewalk.

That’s when they fixed us up as well. After all those decades of being separated they brought us together again and put us here, just like we used to be, back where we belong.

“It feels amazing, makes me proud of her. She’s definitely following the path of the disease but she is making it her own and she’s doing so well… She has her days, her left hip is dislocated, just because she’s been in a wheel chair for so long so we have days where we deal with a decent amount of pain,” she added.

According to the National Health Institute, Late Infantile NCL refers to a group of conditions that affect the nervous system. Symptoms vary from person to person but include, vision impairment/loss, epilepsy and a decline in motor skills. Bowman also suffers Myoclonic jerk, which means she is constantly moving.

“Oh my gosh, there’s so much, there’s a lot of supplements that aren’t covered by insurance, just equipment that is comfort oriented.

She’s gotten pretty skinny, so she needs like special pillows for pressure sores. We’ve been trying to get a wheelchair for her for a while but it just takes a long time through insurance. She does acupuncture and she gets massages and Reiki and none of that stuff is covered,” Manning said.

“She does those salt baths…

She loves them, she gets so much relaxation out of it, I can just see the comfort on her face,” she added.

The event will take place at Saratoga Eagles Club located at 373 Crescent Ave. in Saratoga Springs. Attendees will be able to enjoy live music, a BBQ, raffles and more. Cost for adults is $20 and $5 for Children under 12.

Money raised will go to help Bowman and her family afford what goes into caring for her.

Saratoga Eagles Club and The Goat Brothers are sponsoring the event and according to Manning, there are hundreds of different raffles to be won. Small prizes like gift baskets and gift cards and larger prizes like diamond

earrings and hotel stays. “Too many to count… It’s amazing how people have shown their love for her, people that haven’t even met her,” Manning says.

Bowman herself has also made an impact in the community and continues to make her mother proud- Kaitlin’s Korner at Gavin Park in the town of Wilton is an inclusive playground made for children of all abilities.

Swings include bucket seats with buckles, a horizontal slide and all solid surfaces. While vacationing in Lake George, a family with an Autistic son thanked them for

having built the playground.

“It’s so important to us that people continue to support her, I think its a huge part of why I’ve been able to give her the care that she needs outside of what insurance can cover cause it’s just the little things that aren’t a necessity have a huge impact on your quality of life… I do attribute a lot of her health to everybody helping me support her in the way that she needs so I just want to make sure everybody knows how thankful I am for that. I hope to see all their faces on Saturday,” Manning said.

Albany Airport Expands The Wesley Foundation Flight Destinations, Among to Celebrate Saratoga Other Expansions Slated Grandparents Day CAPITAL REGION — The airline Allegiant (Nasdaq: ALGT) will begin nonstop service from Albany International Airport to three cities in Florida. These destinations include Punta Gorda Airport in Fort Meyers, FL, St. Pete – Clearwater International Airport in the Tampa Bay area and Orlando Sanford International Airport in Sanford FL. Flights will begin service at the end of 2018 and start as low at $59, one-way.

This news comes after a recent announcement made on Aug. 14 that Albany Airport will expand in another way via the Adirondack Northway (I-87).

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo awarded $22.1 million in funding to Albany International Airport as part of a $42.1 million

project to modernize the facility. The grant funding is part of the $200 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, first announced by Governor Cuomo in his 2016 State of the State Address and later passed in the 2017 state budget.

To complement the state’s investment in Albany Airport, Governor Cuomo also announced a $50 million project to construct a new highway connector between the airport and the Northway in the Town of Colonie, Albany County, to ease traffic congestion and provide a more direct route to the airport. The airport connector project is funded by Governor Cuomo’s $100 billion Infrastructure Renewal Plan.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Wesley Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Wesley Community, will host its second annual Saratoga Grandparents Day celebration on Sept. 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs City Center.

The event will honor grandparents and great-grandparents by providing an opportunity for family members of all ages to spend time together on National Grandparents Day. Attendees will enjoy carnival-style games, a silent

auction, face painting, balloon art, a magician, and photo opportunities, amongst other activities. The first 250 grandparents to enter will receive a special giveaway.

The community celebration is free and open to the public.

Fees will apply for select activities and items for sale with proceeds to support the renovation of the Resident Activities Room at The Wesley Health Care Center.

and Vigil to Show Immigrants Support and Gratitude

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Immigration Coalition, a network of civic groups, faith communities and concerned individuals from across the Capital District, will hold the “All Are Welcome Here” walk and vigil on Aug. 28, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in downtown Saratoga Springs. The walk and vigil will be a gesture of gratitude, support, and acknowledgement of immigrants and the contributions they make in the communities. The general public is encouraged and welcome to attend.

The Coalition, including the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church, Temple Sinai of Saratoga Springs, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Friends Meeting, Saratoga Unites, the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, The Church of St. Peter of Saratoga Springs and concerned individuals, seek to raise awareness, understanding and acceptance of immigrants’ lives and situations, as well as the contributions they make.

In an effort to be as inclusive as possible the Saratoga Immigration Coalition reached out to over 100

businesses, faith communities, civic groups and support organizations in Saratoga, Warren, Washington and Albany counties, to join in the event as participating supporters. The only requirement was that they agree with and hold to the intent, nature and focus of the walk and vigil.

The walk is peaceful and silent, starting from three locations in Saratoga Springs, the City Center and Temple Sinai on North Broadway; Beekman St. and Oak; Union Ave. and East at the racetrack entrance.

All walking sights were chosen for historical and current immigrant significance. One can join the walk anywhere along the route.

All walkers will gather at the Spirit of Life Monument in Congress Park at 6:40 p.m. for a short program of spoken word and song presented by local artists, immigrants, clergy and citizens.

Individuals can walk from any location they choose or they can simply opt to attend the vigil in Congress Park only. Walk participants are encouraged to sign-up on SignUpGenius for specific locations.

Crystal A. Ayers, age 46, Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 17 with driving while intoxicated- misdemeanor; refusal pre-screen test; failure to keep right.

Bobby E. Baker, age 32, Athol, was charged Aug. 15 with criminal trespass third degree/building or property- misdemeanor.

Reginald D. McCorkle, age 40, Wilton, was charged Aug. 15 with failure to keep right - aggrivated unlicensed operation 2nd/three or more suspensions- misdemeanor.

Dayshawn R. Herring, age 32, Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 15 with criminal possession of marijuana fifth degree- misdemeanor.

David D. Farr, age 36, Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 13 with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Patrick E. Sullivan, 33, of Troy, was charged Aug. 13 with public lewdness- 3 counts misdemeanor; endangering the welfare of a child – 1 count-misdemeanor. Sullivan is accused of exposing

himself to adult woman and teenage girls in different neighborhoods throughout the Town Milton dating back to May. On numerous occasions Sullivan would drive up to women and young girls and ask for directions, or if they had seen his lost dog.

Cendno Rahaman, age 28, Schenectady, was charged Aug. 13 with assault in the second degree/deadly weapon- felony; assault in the third degree/criminal negligence- misdemeanor; menacing second degreemisdemeanor/ 2 counts; criminal possession of a weapon fourth degreemisdemeanor.

The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred after 4 a.m. on Caroline Street, where police found a 23-yearold male with several cuts to his face and head, and a 24-year-old-female with a cut to her wrist. Rahaman is suspected of menacing the male victim with a knife. Both victims, in fear of getting cut or stabbed, took off on foot on Caroline Street and were pursued by Rahaman, who proceeded to cut the male victim in the head and face several times until a passerby intervened, according to police. The woman received a cut to her wrist during Rahaman’s initial actions with the knife and was treated on scene by the Saratoga Springs Fire Department. The male victim was transported to Albany Medical Center.

His injuries are not life threatening. Rahaman was arraigned and sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash, or $20,000 bond.

Joshua A. Salak, age 31, Ballston Spa, was charged Aug. 13 with criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument- misdemeanor.

Sharifa D. Anderson, age 32, Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 13 with criminal mischief in the third degree- felony.

Nicholas W. Brasel, age 32, Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 13 with assault in the

BLOTTER 5 third degree/intent physical injury- misdemeanor.

Jasmine Casaretto-Hernandez, age 24, Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 12 with following motor vehicle too closely; driving while intoxicated- misdemeanor, after being involved in a property damage accident.

Christopher J. Shaw, age 44, Schenectady, was charged Aug. 12 with parking violations - driving while intoxicated- misdemeanor.

Jesse R. Dakin, age 26, North Adams, Massachusetts, was charged Aug. 13 with assault in the third degree/intent physical injury- misdemeanor.

Michelle E. Riopelle, age 28, North Adams, Massachusetts, was charged Aug. 13 with assault in the third degree/intent physical injury- misdemeanor.

Sierra G. Parker, age 22, Mechanicville, was charged Aug. 12 with driving while intoxicated- misdemeanor; equipment (headlights).

Ricardo P. Gauna, age 33, Saratoga Springs, was charged Aug. 12 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle 2nd/three or more suspensionsmisdemeanor; no/expired inspection certificate.

Yvonne M. Cairns, age 46, East Greenbush, was charged Aug. 12 with falsely reporting

an incident in the second degree- misdemeanor.

TO THE EDITOR

As a young person, a new voter, and someone who cares about our country, I recognize the need for involvement in the political process, but I also understand why not everyone wants to get involved. The political atmosphere is often negative and disengaging. Politicians lie and play dirty tricks, making the system undesirable to be a part of. I believe that we, together, have the ability to change our politics for the better. In my full-hearted belief that begins with getting active even in the face of adversity, we need to vote for candidates who will unify people and share in our belief of a more active and open political process. That’s why I am proud to be a Teen for Tedra. She refuses PAC money, making her open and beholden to her constituents, not special interests. Tedra Cobb encourages teen involvement in her campaign in a positive way, promoting the responsibility of civil service even on the grassroots level. Most importantly, Tedra listens to the concerns of all voters and residents regardless of who they are, Republican or Democrat, teen or adult. She understands that it is all of us together who make the North Country what it is, and she knows that representatives must advocate for everyone, not just their supporters. Those are the reasons I will be casting my ballot for Tedra Cobb on November 6th, and I hope you will join me.

She was 94.

A funeral service was conducted Monday, August 20, 2018 at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

Bailey

He was a Beagle/Bassett mix trained as a service dog and was ten years old. Bailey died of a cancerous tumor the size of his great heart that was located on his heart.

Huppuch says “He rescued me as much as I rescued him; a truly wonderful dog that will forever be missed. I thank the Lord for my time with him. He left pawprints on my heart.”

Bailey is buried near a favorite tree in the woods at an undisclosed location. A young deer was spotted near his gravesite shortly thereafter.

A celebration of Bailey’s life will be held on Friday, August 24 at King’s Tavern (across from the track); and on Monday, August 27 at Quarter’s Sports Bar (in the Price Chopper Plaza) after the races.

John Huppuch wishes to thank all who have shown their love and support of Bailey during this difficult time.

Bailey touched the hearts of nearly everyone he ever met – “Saratoga’s Celebrity Dog.” He was an icon at the Saratoga Racecourse where he accompanied John as a service dog for the past six seasons. Bailey was featured in NYRA’s ‘Overnighter’ (a daily publication for NYRA employees) for the last five meets as recently as Sunday, August 12, 2018.

Bailey has also been on numerous television news programs over the years and was featured with Steve Capporizzo on Channel 10 (ABC) the night before he died. Bailey was also featured on a calendar benefitting Saratoga Arts as well as the Saratoga Animal Shelter, the facility from where he was rescued.

Jaguar Club Lawn Show SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Aug. 25 The Capital Region Jaguar Club of New York, Ltd. (CRJCNY) is holding its annual “Jaguars at Saratoga” lawn show at the Saratoga Automobile Museum, 110 Avenue of the Pines, Saratoga Springs, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Rain date is August 26.

The show is free and open to the public. There will be an on-site food vendor, Kent’s Crazy Horse and the museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Attendees can expect to see many different Jaguar models on display, from the iconic E-Type (XKE) sports car of the 1960s to the current F-Type supercar.

FIRST ANNUAL TWILIGHT TOUR HELD IN TOWN OF BALLSTON

BALLSTON — Aug. 14, the Saratoga County Agricultural Promotion Committee hosted its first Twilight Tour and discussion at Wm. H. Buckley Farm in the Town of Ballston.

The event was supported by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County with additional support from Saratoga PLAN, the Saratoga County Soil and Water

Conservation District and the Saratoga County Planning Dept.

About 60 attendees were given a short tour of the farm by owner Mark Sacco. The farm was recently enrolled in the State Purchase of Development Program with the assistance of Saratoga PLAN in October of 2015. Before the panel discussion began, Michael Horn, Conservation Director from Saratoga PLAN,

updated the attendees on the NY State Farmland Purchase of Development Program and gave an overview of the numbers of acres of farmland in Saratoga County already conserved.

Glens Falls Hospital Expands with New Building

GLENS FALLS — Glens Falls Hospital is in the planning process for a new building. According to Katelyn Cinzio, Director of Marketing and Communications at the hospital, the medical village project will expand upon the emergency departments space for individuals that need observation but not admission, space for behavioral health patients, an expanded crisis unit and an ambulatory detox program. The expanded emergency department will provide patients with access to both emergency services and

expanded diagnostic care.

The project comes as part of a statewide healthcare facility transformation program created in 2017, by the New York State Department of Health.

This provided the hospital with $19.5 million for the integrated medical village on the main hospital campus. However, according to Cinzio, they cannot share an estimate for the entire scope of the project.

“Although we are still in the planning phase, we expect that the building will be larger than 30,000 square feet,” Cinzio added. The goal is to begin construction in 2019.

The new building will be primarily staffed by Glens Falls Hospital Employees who

work in the appropriate units.

Although Cinzio says it may create some additional jobs but primarily is intended to support current staff in working more efficiently.

“We recognized the need for a more efficient space to care for patients coming to the hospital for emergency needs as well as those who are not experiencing an emergency but need comprehensive evaluation and diagnostic testing,” Cinzio said.

“Glens Falls Hospital wants to ensure that individuals have access to high quality patientcentered care, especially when they are at their most vulnerable moments,” she added.

NYRA, SPAC AND CITY OF SARATOGA SPRINGS FORM TRIANGLE OF COLLOBARATION TO PROMOTE TOURISM SARATOGA SPRINGS — The New York Racing Association (NYRA), the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) and the City of Saratoga Springs understand that collaboration is the key to maintaining and growing the tourism sector that is so vital to the sustained success of the local economy.

As a sports and entertainment venue that attracts more than one million fans annually, nearly 60 percent of whom visit from beyond the nine-county Capital Region, Saratoga Race Course is the undeniable hub for summer tourism activity in Saratoga.

NYRA CEO and President Chris Kay, now in his sixth summer at the helm of the organization, understands the synergistic benefits derived from enhanced partnerships with the city and other major cultural attractions.

During the off-season, Kay made it his priority to work closely with city and regional leaders to position Saratoga for continued growth, and forged close ties with Saratoga Springs Mayor Meg Kelly and SPAC President Elizabeth Sobol.

The third piece of the triangle that drives tourism is the local arts community, led

by SPAC. Last summer, Kay had an opportunity to sit down with Sobol and left that meeting so impressed with her vision for the future of SPAC and its role in attracting visitors from New York City that NYRA created an online platform to promote SPAC and other leading arts organizations throughout the area.

The online portal, called SaratogaVisit.com, resides on NYRA’s website and is designed as a one-stop shop for guests and tourists to learn about the worldclass arts, entertainment and lifestyle attractions available in Saratoga Springs. The goal is to inform and educate the thousands of fans who visit NYRA’s website about the city’s diverse array of offerings to convince them to not only book their trip to Saratoga, but to stay even longer.

S.O.S. STATE DOT: NEW CRESCENT AVENUE SEEKS NEW DIRECTOR, AND EAST HIGH CODE BLUE STREET BRIDGES TO OPEN FRIDAY SETS WINTER PLANS

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Two new bridges over the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87) - the Crescent Avenue bridge in Saratoga Springs and the East High Street bridge in the town of Malta - will open Friday, state Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Paul A. Karas announced earlier this week.

The $8 million project to replace two 1962-built bridges maintains important connections for residents and visitors on both sides of the Northway.

The Crescent Avenue Bridge in Saratoga Springs connects

full-time and seasonal residents around the northern end of Saratoga Lake to the east with South Broadway, Saratoga Spa State Park and downtown Saratoga Springs to the west.

In Malta, the East High Street bridge connects neighborhoods on both sides of the Northway and provides important connections to businesses along Route 9 in Malta to the east, as well as to Saratoga Lake, and to downtown Ballston Spa to the west. The bridge work started in late March.

The new bridges have wider shoulders to accommodate

pedestrians and cyclists and are expected to have service lives of at least 75 years. They were replaced using cost-effective techniques to minimize future maintenance and repair expenses, according to the state DOT. As part of the Crescent Avenue bridge replacement, the intersection of Crescent Avenue and the “slip-ramp” to the southbound Northway has been reconfigured. The upgrade newly allows for left turns onto the southbound Northway for motorists who travel westbound over the Crescent Avenue bridge.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The search has started for a new executive director of Shelters of Saratoga, Marcy Dreimiller, board President of S.O.S., said during an organization fundraising event Tuesday. Longtime director Michael Finocchi resigned earlier this month.

Since 1991 Shelters of Saratoga, or S.O.S., has provided assistance to people facing homelessness by offering a path to self-sufficiency.

The organization also oversees the emergency shelter Code Blue program. The emergency homeless shelter is open from November until April when the temperature dips below 32 degrees or a snowfall of 12 inches or more is predicted. Code Blue was started in December 2013 as a collaborative effort between the City of Saratoga Springs, faith-based groups, individuals and non-profit partners to assist individuals who are homeless and has operated out of a handful of temporary venues since that time.

In early 2017, local business owner Ed Mitzen announced he would fund the costs to build a permanent shelter adjacent to

the S.O.S. existing buildings on Walworth Street. Local firms Bonacio Construction and the LA Group agreed to forego any profits to keep the building development costs as low as possible.

Shortly after that announcement, however, a group of 22 residents filed a legal challenge claiming the proposed two-story building which would house about 50 beds didn’t fit into their west side neighborhood and that its development is not a permitted use within the district. The case remains in litigation.

In lieu of a court ruling, Dreimiller said plans for the upcoming winter season will site the emergency shelter once again at the Soul Saving Station on Henry Street. That facility houses only 41 beds, however. The PresbyterianNew England Congregational Church has offered to set up additional cots at their location on Circular Street should the number of people rise above 41. It is a function they also performed last year.

The walk-in, emergency homeless Code Blue shelter offers a hot meal, a warm and safe place to sleep and essential supplies. During the 2017-18 winter season, Code Blue was open 162 nights and housed 6,480 overnight stays, according to the organization.

NOTES FROM CITY HALL

by Thomas Dimopoulos • Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — City employees were forced to set up temporary offices across the Spa City this week in the aftermath of a fire and water damage which forced the closure of City Hall.

The 19th century building, which opened in 1871, was struck by lightning Aug. 17, resulting in fire and water related damage to the structure. No reopening date has been set.

“It’s indefinite. Right now, we’re on a 30-day plan,” city Mayor Meg Kelly said this week. “That means our first estimate in our emergency management plan, is we’re out for 30 days. If people can get back in in 10-15 days they go, but there are a lot of departments that will be delayed.”

Most city employees were relocated to the southside city recreation facility on Vanderbilt Avenue. Public Works employees set up shop at Van Rensselaer avenue and city police, who are located in an unaffected City Hall annex, maintain their department offices on Lake Avenue. Saratoga City Court sessions are being held at 65 South Broadway, in the Lincoln bath building house and this week’s council meeting was staged at the Saratoga Springs City Center on Broadway.

The Vanderbilt Avenue recreation facility – which had been bonded for $6.5 million - became a hot political topic in 2009, with a local community group filing a lawsuit against the facility being developed on the south side.

Scott Johnson, who was eventually re-elected for a second mayoral term, pushed for the facility to be developed. Accounts Commissioner John Franck, who held the same position on the

council at the time, also was in favor of the project. The building opened in 2010.

There had been some previous debate about potentially turning the Saratoga Music Hall – located on the top floor of the City Hall building - into a new, expanded court room. It is unclear if any changes will be made however.

“There’s no plan right now,” Mayor Kelly said. “Right now we’re in the recovery stage, so we are not making any plans for the building at this time.”

Financial Report for 2017 The city released a 66-page financial report regarding an independent audit conducted through Dec. 31, 2017 by BST & Co. of Albany. Among the details cited: Sales Tax and Hotel Room Occupancy Tax each decreased by 1 percent compared to 2016, VLT Aid remained at $2.326 million in 2017 - the same as the previous three years, and Mortgage Tax receipts increased in 2017 to $1.693 million, 15 percent higher than 2016. SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Brewing Co. formerly located at 131 Excelsior Ave., which closed in January of this year, is auctioning off pieces of the brewery or as a turnkey operations option which means selling the entire set of equipment as is. The auction

is taking place on Aug. 28 and is being facilitated by the Tiger Group. The Tiger Group deals with asset appraisals, liquidations, dispositions and capital investments. They have been working with the parent company of Saratoga Brewing Co., Mendocino Brewing located in Hopland, California, for a month.

“We have an online platform that we use and it’s a live auction,

so people actually see the items and the lots are closing out as people bid on them... People will register for the auction, they log in (to the website) and there’ll be each item up for bid and they can place individual bids on it,” said Alyssa Van Hinte, a marketing manager at the Tiger Group.

On the Aug. 28 at 11 a.m.

once the countdown clock runs out, the highest bidder will win.

Items for sale include the tasting room furniture, a 2012 keg, the complete bottle filling conveyor line, steam boilers, equipment in the fermentation area, memorabilia and more.

According to Van Hinte, a lot of existing breweries are interested in these types of items. “We’ve had a lot of people who are already in operation and they’re just looking to upgrade their current equipmen,” she says.

“The pieces start at $1 but the lots do have a minimum that we will require once people start bidding on these because they go up pretty high... People can get really amazing prices on certain pieces but it depends on how in demand they are,” Van Hinte said.

“Auctions just keep things a little bit more exciting and keep people a little bit more into the sale. There’s potential for the sellers to get a lot more than they initially thought or the other way around; the buyers are getting a really good deal on prices,” she added.

According to Van Hinte, bidding did open up a little early on Aug. 16 and on Aug. 27 the brewery will be open for preview, so bidders can look at the items before bidding on them. Checkout is Aug. 30 through Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Small items must be removed by Sept. 7 and checkout is by appointment only.

Glens Falls Hospital Announces New Visitor Management Program GLENS FALLS — On Aug. 8 Glens Falls Hospital announced that it is taking steps to further protect our patients, visitors, and staff by implementing a visitor management program.

This program will be rolling out throughout the month of August and September 2018 and will work to improve the safety, security, comfort, and accommodations of everyone who walks through the hospital doors.

To support this initiative, the Glens Falls Hospital Security team will be stationed at all the public entrances in use by patients and visitors.

These security officers will act as greeters, supporting access and way-finding as well as check-in for visitors.

When a patient or visitor comes to Glens Falls Hospital, they will need to enter through one of the four main public entry points. These locations include the Tower Entrance, West Entrance, Pruyn Pavilion Entrance, and the Emergency Department Entrance. All other entrances will not be accessible to visitors. Patients coming to the GI Center will continue to enter directly to this area with the entrance at the rear of the campus, accessible from School Street.

When a visitor enters the building, they will check in at the Security station at the door by providing a photo ID and informing them whom they are

there to visit. The program will gradually be rolled out to each of the four main entrances as follows: Aug. 15 – Tower Entrance - Security will implement the visitor management system at the Tower Entrance, with this entrance being open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m daily.

Aug. 29 – West Entrance Visitors will be given a sticker while patients who have been to patient access will continue to their destination. This entrance will be open Monday-Friday, 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. After 6 p.m. and on weekends, this entrance will be closed, and visitors/patients will be re-directed to the Tower Entrance.

Sept. 12 – Pruyn Pavilion Entrance - Included in this phase is the consolidation of the two

existing entrances of the Pruyn Pavilion and the Community Learning Center. The new single entrance will be located in front of the Community Learning Center, and called the Pruyn Pavilion Entrance.

The existing Pruyn Pavilion Entrance will be closed. Valet Parking will be re-located to the new consolidated entrance.

This entrance will be opened Monday-Friday, 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sept. 26 – Emergency Department – Visitor management will begin in the Emergency Department with each patient being issued one/two visitor badges as appropriate by the Patient Access staff. This will assist in limiting visitors in the patient care area of the department.

Let Teachers Teach with New York State Governor Candidate Larry Sharpe

SARATOGA COUNTY — Larry Sharpe, a Queens native, was thinking about moving to North Carolina due to his disappointment in the state of being New York is in. However, he decided to run for New York State Governor instead, believing that real change starts at home.

A Libertarian and United States Marine, Sharpe has lived his whole life as a New Yorker.

“I am a kid born in Manhattan.

I was adopted. My adoptive parents took me to the Bronx. My mother was a German immigrant, my father was in the Army, met her over there and got married, came over here. I was raised in the Bronx, around East Stadium, until I was 11.

Then we moved out to Long Island, Suffolk County,” Sharpe explained.

After entering the United States Marine Corp at age 17, he barely graduated high school, only

doing so because his recruiter had guaranteed him a job.

“That was a lie,” he laughed, “but that’s what he told me, and I went anyway.”

He attended college as a fulltime Marine, earning a 3.7 GPA majoring in Anthropology.

“Because then it mattered to me, I wanted to be a good student,” he said.

Sharpe graduated and went on to be a successful business owner. He is currently a consultant, trainer, and teacher that helps other businesses to grow.

He has also taught at the graduate level at Yale and Columbia as a guest instructor and as a CAPS instructor for Baruch College.

“We have to change the education system fundamentally in New York State. It is broken, it is an embarrassment. It’s about $60 billion, only $22,000 per student and we’re having, at best, mediocre results,” Sharpe said passionately.

fundamental change by implementing the following: No more standardized testing until you’re in high school.

“Standardized testing is bad for several reasons: it gets teachers to teach to a test and not to an individual student; it is a way of people punishing teachers instead of rewarding them; it’s a way to fund schools, which is completely incorrect and wrong; and worse, it actually makes kids who are bad test takers feel stupid. Now they are labeled the dumb kid. That’s a bad thing,” Sharpe explained.

K-12 is anachronism that shouldn’t exist.

“We should be kindergarten through tenth. At tenth grade, take a test, whether you’re at private school, public school, homeschooled. We should be supporting homeschooling far more than we support it. It’s embarrassing how bad we are. If you have the

time, the energy, and resources to teach your kid at home, please do so. I want to encourage you and lower your tax burden. I want to still allow you to have access to all of the things you’re paying taxes for already... You pass your test at tenth grade, you get a high school diploma from that district. You’re finished at that point,” he said.

He has a plan of “four choices” for what to do next: College, trade school, get a job, start a business.

How does he plan to pay for this?

“Very simple actually. The New York State Constitution says we must pay for the last two years of school. Right now, we’re paying 22k a year per kid. Here’s what I’m going to do, when I was in the Marine Corp, when I got out, I got the GI Bill. You get ten years to use x amount of dollars, use it, go to college. Every kid at 16, gets the equivalent of the GI Bill. They

get the Student Career Bill. Ten years, $20,000, do what you want.

I promise you, prep schools are going to pop up all over the place, that are good at what they do because now the kids are choosing. Trade schools will pop up all over the place, too,” he stated.

“You have x number of students, multiply that by y, there’s your money from the state. I would like for the money to come only from the state, not from the counties. I prefer no school tax at all. You cut school tax, how much money are we saving? A lot,” Sharpe explained.

“Here’s what I know, freedom plus accountability plus transparency equals innovation.

What’s going to work in Buffalo isn’t going to work in Rochester or Watertown, and I’m okay with that. I want happy kids. I want satisfied parents. we do that, we win,” he said simply.

Gubernatorial primaries will be held on September 13, 2018.

“Let teachers teach,” Sharpe said.

AS THE SARATOGA FARMERS’ MARKET opening bell rings, Rose Contadino begins making pasta. Regulars and newcomers gather around the pasta board to watch the process – the sprinkling of semolina flour, the rolling of the dough into strips, and the dough’s final trip through the pasta cutter into ribbons.

“It’s like a show,” says Contadino, with a laugh. “People love it.”

Contadino owns Mangiamo, one of the market’s three new Italian prepared food vendors.

While the other two – Giovanni Fresco and La Dolce Vita -- make dishes to be eaten on the spot, Mangiamo offers fettuccine and pappardelle for home cooking.

Contadino arrives at the market with her dough, prepared in a commercial kitchen. As she prepares the fresh pasta, she lets it dry under a protective mesh. She offers halfpound and one-pound portions.

Market goers take the pasta home, set up their pots of boiling water, and can get the noodles cooked in three to five minutes. Contadino also offers ravioli, prepared with a seasonal vegetable as filling.

“I have always made my pasta fresh and when I moved to Saratoga, I wanted to get into the food business,” Contadino says.

“Nobody seemed to be offering pasta made fresh like this.”

Contadino’s parents were immigrants from the Calabria region of Italy. She was born in Stamford, Connecticut, the fourth of five daughters. Every Sunday, after church, the children, their parents and grandparents would

gather around the pasta board and make noodles.

“We did it all by hand,” says Contadino. “We also grew our own food, and every summer, canned tomatoes for our sauce.”

Her business pays homage to her roots. Her pasta cutter belonged to her grandmother, and her father hand-crafted her pasta board.

The tradition of making pasta at home resonates for many around Saratoga, where about 17 percent of the population has Italian ancestry.

on Wednesdays and Saturdays as Contadino cuts her pasta.

Some regulars arrive with recipes. Others send emails with special requests. And still others share stories about their own experiences. Contadino listens and enjoys it all.

Ravioli in Olive Oil Yields: 2 servings

INGREDIENTS Find all these Ingredients at the Farmers’ Market!

• 1 package of homemade ravioli (about 10) • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil • 2 Tablespoons chopped fresh flat leaf parsley

• 2 garlic cloves, peeled • ½ Tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves • OPTIONAL: ½ Tablespoon of Peperonciono sott olio

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Bring water to a boil.

Add ravioli stirring so it doesn’t stick, and water returns to a boil. Cook pasta until it is tender about 4 to 5 minutes. Test the pasta after 3 minutes if you prefer it al dente. Drain and reserve 2 Tablespoons of the pasta water to create a sauce.

2. Meanwhile, in a large sauce pan or skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until light brown.

Do not burn the garlic. Add the reserved pasta water.

Gently mix in the ravioli.

Sprinkle in the parsley and basil. If using Peperonciono, top the dish after plating.

NOTES: Peperonciono sott olio can be purchased from the Dancing Ewe Farm or add ½ Tablespoon of red pepper flakes when you add the garlic.

Top with favorite Pecorino (made from sheep’s milk) cheese, e.g. Pecorino Riserva.

Happiness is…Cheesecake

Hello my Foodie Friends.

This weekend marks the 149th running of the Travers Stakes for Saratoga Springs. Travers is the most popular day during the entire Saratoga summer racing meet. The city will be packed with residents and tourists. Many of us will be creating menus’ for our guests who will be traveling in to watch this spectacular event. This weekend is also my Mother-in-law’s 86th Birthday.

Her favorite dessert, and one that would be a great one to serve your guests, is Cheesecake. My Motherin-law makes her cheesecake with a graham cracker crust layered, crushed pineapple, and cherries.

Cheesecake is can be a unique global dessert. Each region of the world also has its own take on the best way to make the dessert. Italians use ricotta cheese, while the Greeks use mizithra or feta. Germans prefer cottage

cheese, while the Japanese use a combination of cornstarch and egg whites. There are specialty cheesecakes that include blue cheese, seafood, spicy chilies and even tofu! In spite of all the variations, the popular dessert’s main ingredients – cheese, wheat and a sweetener –remain the same.

No matter how you slice it, cheesecake is truly a dessert that has stood the test of time. From its earliest recorded beginnings on Samos over 4,000 years ago to its current iconic status around the world this creamy cake remains a favorite for sweet tooth’s of all ages.

To help make a cheesecake, you do need very important tools – the Spring form Pan. Spring form pans are a kitchen essential for producing flawlessly smooth cheesecakes, perfectly crusted tarts, or intricate ice cream cakes without damage to their tops, bottoms, or sides. Meant to eliminate the risks associated with removing cakes from traditional pans, removing your product from

the pan is the final step before placing your delicate treats on display, serving to the customer, or packaging them to go.

Many people ask me how I won Paula’s heart and I tell them on our first date I brought a dozen Red Roses and a cheesecake to meet her Mom and Dad. When I entered their home carrying both of them Paula said, “Wow, how did you know my mom loves cheesecake?”

Thinking quick on my feet, I looked at Paula’s mom and said “here I got

these for you!” Paula’s mom quickly responded: “no one ever gets me flowers and cheesecake!” Her dad (retired Army Master Sergeant) just smiled at me and said in his southern drawl: “nice job young man”. I was on a roll with my improvising and I told them that, in my family, it is a custom to give gifts to the mom. So my sage advice to all young suitors out there is take care of the Mom and good things will follow.

Pineapple Upside Down Cheesecake This is a lush cheesecake lightly flavored with pineapple, topped with gooey, spiced rum enhanced syrup, bright pineapple, pecans, and maraschino cherries and then bruleed for just a minute to create an elegant twist on the iconic Pineapple Upside Down Cake.

INGREDIENTS CRUST: • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs • ¼ cup sugar • 1/3 cup butter, melted CHEESECAKE: • 32 oz. cream cheese, room temp • 2 cups sugar, room temp

• 6 eggs • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla • ¼ cup pineapple juice, reserved from the pineapple slices • 16 ounces sour cream TOPPING: • ¼ cup butter

• ½ cup brown sugar • 2 tablespoons spiced rum • 20 oz. can pineapple slices in juice, drained and ¼ cup juice reserved • Maraschino cherries, you’ll need 9 or 10 drained, patted dry • ½ cup pecan halves

INSTRUCTIONS CRUST: Mix the crumbs with the sugar and butter. Press into the bottom and part way up the sides of a 9 inch springform pan. Cover the pan bottom and sides on the outside with aluminum foil to keep any water out.

CHEESECAKE Preheat the oven to 375F. Beat the cream cheese on low speed until smooth. Add the sugar and continue to beat at low speed. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Remove bowl from mixer and fold in the vanilla, pineapple juice, and sour cream.

Pour into springform and place it in another, larger pan. Add water until it comes halfway up the sides of the outside of the cheesecake pan.

Bake for 45 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave the cake in the oven for 1 hour. DO NOT open the oven

Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

TOPPING Remove cake from refrigerator. Run a knife around the edges and carefully remove the sides of the springform pan. Set aside. Melt the butter and brown sugar in a pan, whisking until smooth and most of the graininess is gone. Add the bourbon and whisk smooth over low heat for about 2 minutes.

The mixture should be thick and smooth, somewhat like caramel syrup. Remove from heat and let cool until it is just warm to the touch - about 10 minutes. Spoon half of the topping over the cake top. Carefully arrange the pineapple rings, pecans, and cherries over the topping. Spoon the remaining topping over the fruit and use a plumber’s torch (or propane kitchen torch) to brulee the top.

A Fall Show for Deadheads: Dark Star

ALBANY — Offering a continually evolving artistic outlet within the Grateful Dead’s musical canon, Dark Star Orchestra brings their live show to the Palace Theatre Nov. 17.

Using entire set lists from the Grateful Dead’s decades of touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates song for song performances straight from

the set list of historic shows.

Band members include Jeff Mattson (Jerry Garcia), Lisa Mackey (Donna Jean Godchaux), Dino English (Bill Kreutzmann), Rob Koritz (Mickey Hart), Skip Vangelas (Phil Lesh), Rob Eaton (Bob Weir) and Rob Barraco (multiple keyboardists).

discuss their drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and work in other media. This year’s event will include live music performances by Mike Grutka, Sam Reed, and Erin Powers, face painting and a Kidz Art Zone.

2018 Adirondack Independence Music Festival Set for Sept. 1-2

LAKE GEORGE — Twiddle, AND Pigeons Playing Ping Pong will headline the 4th Annual Adirondack Independence Music festival over Labor Day Weekend in Lake George.

The two-day, multi-band event takes place at the Charles R. Wood Festival Commons Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday Sept. 2.

The Vermont-based, jam/ rock band, Twiddle has performed at venues from Red Rocks to Bonnaroo and celebrated the past two New Year’s Eves in the Capital District with performances at the

Palace Theatre in Albany. Twiddle will perform two sets to close out Saturday night at the festival.

Sunday’s headliner, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, comes via Baltimore, Maryland, and have recently performed at several of the nation’s top festivals, including Bonnaroo and The Peach Music Festival.

Other bands for this year’s lineup include multi-instrumentalist Keller Williams, Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime, and Pink Talking Fish, the debut performance by funky supergroup Back to School Special, and multiple other artists.

The two-day festival will feature music across two alternating main stages at the festival commons from 1 p.m. – 11 p.m., with late-night sets taking place at King Neptune’s, just a short walk up the lake, until 3 a.m.

Admission to the late-night sets is free to festival attendees 21-plus. Music at the festival commons is open to all ages and families are encouraged to attend.

Tickets to the festival are $80 in advance for weekend tickets and $45 for day tickets and are currently on sale at www.eventbrite.com.

TRAVERS THE ULTIMATE TEST FOR WONDER GADOT

She is Canadian, eh, and named after the brilliant Israeli actor Gal Gadot, the woman perfectly cast as Wonder Woman, about the only film in the DC canon right now worth the price of admission.

In any case, Wonder Gadot (5-1) will be worth the price of admission on Travers Day 2018 for the buzz alone. But is she equipped to take on this set of three-year-old colts or is she looking like a T-rex sitting at a piano?

An objective look at this field suggests that she’ll need Amazonian strength to beat the likes of Good Magic (2-1), Gronkowski (4-1), Bravazo (121) and Tenfold (8-1).

Her latest win, a triumph in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Woodbine was over muddy going and she won easily, by about six lengths. What works in her favor is she appears to have the tactical speed to be in the mix for the entirety of the 10-furlong distance.

Any horse that has a penchant for being a late closer must give a trainer a certain set of mixed feelings, kind of like a disappointing child. The late closer needs so many things to go his or her way: pace and traffic being the primary levers of that machine.

At least with Wonder Gadot, she can be up in the first third

of the field and this gives her a better chance than if she were trying to run down ten colts in the final quarter mile.

Whenever we have this crossover, when a filly takes on the boys, it adds extra seasoning to an already tasty race. In order to qualify, so to speak, certain boxes must be checked off.

When we see a filly in a race of this nature, we shouldn’t be surprised, necessarily. To run in a G1 stake, objective speed standards are set. Is she within a certain RAG or Beyer Speed Figure of the other horses? Yes? Is she sound? Yes? Then, yes, you take your shot. Five-pound weight allowance? Please and thank you.

Todd Pletcher, a trainer who ran the talented filly Rags to Riches to his Triple Crownrace win in 2007, knows what it takes.

“It’s something you put a lot of thought into,” Pletcher said in a Richard Rosenblatt story. “The one thing we knew about Rags to Riches is she was capable of getting the mile-anda-half. Obviously, with Wonder Gadot, she’s been successful at a mile-and-a-quarter.”

What doesn’t get talked about at all, really, is the purse factor. Wonder Gadot could have run in the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. She could have even run in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes at the Spa, a top-five race for three-year-old fillies. The purse of the ’Bama is $600,000. The winner’s share of the $1.25 million Travers? $750,000. The winner’s share of the Alabama? $325,000.

Both are nice paydays, but one means you can get extra whipped cream on your latte without a second thought.

If you have a meal-ticket filly, you can run for the sure thing, as Jerry Hollendorfer always did with Songbird. Keep them in restricted company, cash the check, and move on.

to see fillies run against the boys, but what good does that actually serve, like, 99 percent of the time?

Aside from the physical risks that we’ve seen with horses like Eight Belles and Ruffian running against the boys, there’s also the mental toll it might take on them to fully exert themselves in service of physical transcendence.

I’m thinking about what happened with Rachel Alexandra.

She categorically bottomed out in the Woodward Stakes. It was her eighth race of the season, third against the boys, and she was the victorious equivalent of Y.A. Tittle kneeling on the turf bloodied and worn.

Her four-year-old year you kept waiting for her to turn it on. She didn’t just lose a step.

She lost all her steps. She won the races she won in races more or less drawn up for her against junior varsity fields and never, not once, had that volcanic turn of foot we saw in the Kentucky Oaks, the Preakness, the Haskell, and finally the Woodward in 2009.

Fillies and mares tend to run longer in their careers, even the good ones. But the ones

that are so good that they take on the boys, there’s a price in that barcode that we can’t fully register until it’s too late.

Maybe not. Who knows?

She has beaten two sets of Canucks in the Great White North, so it’s anybody’s guess.

And Saturday’s test against a big field in the Travers could be the race that defines the rest of her life. Nay, will be the race,

because win or lose, it might break her in between the ears, so even if she does come back to race against her own class, say, in the Cotillion, Beldame, or Distaff, she might be drained of all what made her wonderful.

by Louisa Foye for Saratoga TODAY In a Summer fraught with weather anxiety, it was literally a breath of fresh air to see the sun come out and to feel a cool breeze just in time for the fillies to parade in front of the huge crowd for the 138th running of the iconic Grade 1 Alabama for 3-year-olds.

An improbable winner would emerge in Eskimo Kisses, sent off at 9-1, when she snuck up on the rail, coming from last to first, to

dominate the field with a 6-1/2 length victory.

The table was set by a generous Talk Veuve To Me, who went out to a quick :22.52 quarter and :46.79 half, handing Kisses a free pass to dessert, as the big chesnut closer relished the perfect scenario she was given by the streaking pacesetter and gobbled it up like manna from heaven.

Spotting Veuve 15-1/2 lengths early on, Kisses would give dirt-splattered jockey Jose Ortiz his second straight Alabama, after last year’s victory aboard Bill Mott’s Elate.

Following trainer Kenny McPeek’s instructions to a tee, Jose sat back patiently, saving ground on the inside, and let Kisses do all the talking when she was ready. And she made it look easy, turning back Steve Asmussen’s 6-5 favorite Midnight Bisou, and Hall of Famer, Mike Smith, with the aplomb of a seasoned vet!

For Brooklyn-bred owner Harold Lerner, it seemed almost as easy as his entry

into the horseracing business, when he and wife Helen, at odds of 175 million-to-one, hit the mother lode for $258 million in the Mega Millions Jackpot in Rutherford, New Jersey in 2005!

After waiting a couple of days, Helen decided to make their lifechanging announcement at her alma mater, Seton Hall, and from there on gave Harold, a lifelong horseplayer from a long line of the same, her blessing to go for the gusto as a horse owner in the game he was so passionate about!

Calling Saratoga “the temple,” Harold equated his Grade 1 victory at the Spa to winning the Super Bowl, as the feeling you get having your picture taken in the Winner’s Circle here is indescribable!

Kenny McPeek has often been classified as a “router specialist,” following his victory in the 2002 Belmont with Sarava, and his exciting dead heat win in the 2012 Travers with longshot Golden Ticket, and it appears that with Eskimo Kisses, a daughter of

To Honor and Serve, he has found a filly who was bred to succeed at the classic 1-1/4 mile distance, too.

The powerfully built Kisses, who paid $20 on a $2-win ticket, obviously had no problem with the heavier going on the track that had been soaked the night before in torrential downpours, as she recorded a 100 Beyer.

Midnight Bisou, on the other hand, did not like the surface at the Spa one bit, per Mike Smith. She didn’t like it for the CCAO, either, even when it was dry, so this just shows you that her preference is for the hard as a rock “superhighway” she’s accustomed to in Cali, as opposed to ours. She did win the Mother Goose, however, over the deep surface at Big Sandy.

After Kisses kicked clear of Midnight Bisou, the battle was on between Bisou and her stablemate in the Asmussen barn, She’s A Julie, and Ricardo Santana, Jr. pushed Julie gamely ahead of the favorite, Bisou, to take second place.

Considering the success McPeek has had in the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes, following back-to-back victories with Take Charge Lady and Edgar Prado in 2002 and 2003, it appears that he’ll next point Kisses toward this race at his home track Keeneland.

In another race for 3-yearold fillies, the Grade 2 Lake Placid, which immediately preceded the Alabama, e Five Racing and Chad Brown’s multiple graded stakes winner and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf champion, Rushing Fall, returned to the Winner’s Circle after a 15-week layoff.

Going a mile and an 1/8 over the Mellon turf course, with the rail set at 27’, Rushing Fall and her Hall of Fame jockey Javi Castellano, were able to overtake the frontrunner, Go Noni Go, ridden by Luis Saez, from the outside on the far turn, and pulled away in the stretch, outkicking runner up Capla Temptress for the 2-3/4 lengths victory. Lake George winner Daddy is a Legend, with Manny Franco up, was third.

This was a back-to-back victory in the Lake Placid for Javi, as he won last year with Elizabeth Moseley’s homebred Proctor’s Ledge, who also pulled off the rare double, as she won the companion race, the Lake George, earlier in the meet in 2017.

Rushing Fall became a millionaire with this victory, and chances are we will see her next in either the Grade 2 Sands Point at Belmont in four weeks on September 15th, or in 8 weeks on October 13th in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II at Keeneland.

During last Thursday’s 4th Race the racing community collectively stood up and cheered for one of their own, when Tradeable, a 2-year-old NY-bred daughter of Exchange Rate, gave John Hertler his continued on next page...

To understand why this particular victory was meaningful to so many people, is to know why John Hertler is such a respected and muchloved fixture on the New York racing scene. And it has nothing to do with the fact that he was the conditioner of 1984 Whitney, Woodward, Marlboro Cup and Jockey Club Gold Cup Winner Slew o’ Gold.

The former assistant to Hall of Fame trainer P.G. Johnson, John’s story is one of kindness and decency at its core, but in recent years, it is his amazing will and his hallmark “stick-to-it-tiveness” that have made him an inspirational figure in the face of adversity.

John will never complain or much less discuss his existing physical limitations, as all he wants is to carry on as usual with a smile, and to just show up, which he does every single day. While most of us would have decided to fade into the distance long ago, he has chosen to remain very much present, and is teaching all of us a very valuable lesson as he does.

In the finale on Monday’s card, apprentice jockey Romero Ramsay Maragh, based at Gulfstream and a cousin of Rajiv, brought home a 3-yearold NY-bred son of Overanalyze, Won’t Be Missed, for Jimmy Ferraro, as a 48-1 longshot!

Under a brilliant ride by the young bug boy in his very first mount at Saratoga, Won’t Be Missed paid $98, and gave both his rider and anyone lucky enough to bet on him a real thrill!

This was the third start of the meet for Won’t Be Missed, who had dropped down to a $25K maiden claimer last time out, when he finished

far back in 6th. He returned this time to a $40K tag and took advantage of the 7-pound weight allowance for the bug at 111 pounds. Rajiv, giving up 13 pounds at 124, came in 4th behind his young cousin.

I was so very saddened to hear of the passing of Bailey, the beloved service dog of native Saratogian and friend, John Huppuch, last Thursday.

Bailey, a sweet 10-year-old beagle/ basset hound mix, was a fixture around town, and at the racetrack, and had become somewhat of a celebrity since accompanying John to the track every day and was even featured in the NYRA Team Overnighter just days before his passing.

John has been a bartender at the track for 21 years, and Bailey has been his faithful “barback” for almost half that time. In an industry filled with animal lovers, I know that everyone’s heart is breaking for John, and I hope that John will feel our love.

It’s hard to believe that Travers weekend is already upon us, with 28 days down, and just 12 remaining, as Opening Day seems like 5 minutes ago! But what an

exciting Travers is unfolding in front of us, along with an entire card filled with exceptional Grade 1 races.

Bob and Kris Edwards of e Five Racing and Chad Brown’s Good Magic, the impressive Haskell winner, was made the morning line favorite at 2-1, and drew a perfect outside #9 post per Chad, which bodes well for his early speed if he breaks well. Jose Ortiz will once again be in the irons.

How incredible it would be for Kris, a 1985 Saratoga High grad, and for hubby Bob, who she met in college at Plattsburgh, if they can hold up the Man O’ War Cup in victory, just as it will be for Mechanicville’s Chad, who has repeatedly stated that this is the race he most covets!

Chad has his best chance yet to do just that, as his other entry, Gronkowski, who drew an ideal inside post per Chad, because of his closing style and need to save ground, was made the second choice at 4-1.

Gronk will be ridden by Joel Rosario but has yet to race since his 2nd place finish to Justify in the Belmont.

Wonder Gadot, the Canadian-bred daughter of

2002 Travers winner Medaglia d’Oro, will be ridden by leading jockey Irad Ortiz, and will try to make history by becoming the first filly to win the Midsummer Derby since Lady Rotha in 1915, who did so via disqualification. Six other fillies in the very early runnings of the race won before her.

Gadot, correctly pronounced “Ga-dote” per Israeli-born beauty Gal Gadot, the Wonder Woman actress who the filly was named after, is actually the first filly even entered since 1979, when John Veitch’s Hall of Famer Davona Dale, with Hall of Famer Jorgie Velasquez aboard, finished 4th as the favorite.

Two horses I will certainly

have my eyes on are Vino Rosso, Todd Pletcher’s son of Curlin, who will be ridden

by Hall of Famer Johnny Velazquez, and is listed at 10-1 on the morning line, and Catholic Boy, who is trained by former Pletcher assistant Jonathan Thomas, who will be ridden by another Hall of Famer in Javi Castellano. Javi also holds the Travers record with 5 victories. Catholic Boy is listed at 8-1, along with one of Steve Asmussen’s two entries, Tenfold, the Jim Dandy winner, who will have Ricardo Santana aboard.

With gorgeous weather anticipated, I can’t wait for this great day to arrive, and I hope that everyone is as excited as I am!

TRF AND OAKENCOFT PROVIDING A DUAL-BENEFIT FOR RETIRED THOROUGHBREDS AND FUTURE VETS

The cost of a Thoroughbred horse in training can be expensive with the cost of feed, stalls, stable help, and especially veterinarians, but some of that cost can be offset when the horse runs for purse money.

However, it can be difficult to cover those veterinarian costs once the racehorse has been retired. General examinations, teeth care, x-rays, and other services can easily reach hundreds – and even thousands – of dollars.

At the same time, there are gaps in

that horse’s medical history.

That has been one of the challenges for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation each time a retired racehorse is brought to the Heading for Home barn for adoption. From there, a thorough evaluation by a veterinarian is helpful to determine the horse’s capabilities before adoption.

One of Capital Region veterinary groups is assisting in that area by donating their services: the Equine Clinic at Oakencroft in Ravena, co-owned by Dr. Steve Naile and Dr. Ryan Penno. Kim Weir, Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving for the TRF, believes the accredited service is significant, especially for the future of the horse.

“When the horses stop racing, no one is spending money to figure out what happened to them or what’s wrong with them. All we hear is that they won’t run anymore,” Weir said.

“This allows us to provide a better future for each horse. It is improving our ability to make sure each horse has the happiest and healthiest long life with us in sanctuary.”

About once a week, Dr. Suzanne Jaynes of Ballston Spa and two of her veterinarian interns – Dr.

Ali Catalino and Dr. Chris White – come from Oakencroft to visit the TRF and Heading for Home adoption barn on 863 Lake Ave. for five horses: recently-adopted Dusk to Dawn, Blown Save, Cogs My Man, Son of a Gun, and Bold Mon, whose career ended at Saratoga with a second-place finish in claiming race in August 2007.

One person who has helped bring the Oakencroft and TRF partnership together is Director of Communications and Development Jennifer Stevens, who already had a good relationship with Jaynes as the veterinarian for her horse Saving Grace and as a board member for Heading for Home.

“I trust her with the horses,” Stevens said. “I told her about our situation. She came and saw what we were up against. The horses retired a few years ago and they needed a new look over, and that is really costly.

Because of Suzanne’s demeanor, she is practical with her veterinarian advice and treatment. I thought it was a perfect match for our horses.”

The work that Jaynes, Catalino and White do goes beyond routine exams, which typically costs $75.

There are lameness workups that cost as much as $250. Dental costs can range from $105-$130. Plus, there are diagnostics that include nerve blocks, x-rays and ultrasounds,

as well as emergency care.

These exams and treatments can add upequickly, which could easily impact horse owner’s budget.

While the trio of veterinarians are not there to correct injuries that ended the horse’s racing career, they are there to provide a medical history for the horse.

“Initially, we would come as needed.

We usually spend about 4-5 hours.

If it was a normal appointment, it wouldn’t take that long, but we like to go over the horses thoroughly and look at every body part.”

“The goal is not to fix these horses,” she added. “Our job is to determine if they are suitable for trail riding, pasture peddling, or another athletic career.”

This has not been the first time Jaynes has worked with Thoroughbreds in the Saratoga Springs region. After graduating from the University College Dublin School of Veterinary Medicine in Ireland in 2005, Jaynes came to the area as an intern for Dr. Harold Barnes at Saratoga Equine Veterinarian Services.

Through her knowledge and pervious experiences of working with Thoroughbreds, Jaynes is now mentoring both Catalino and White, who are recent graduates of the Atlantic Veterinary School at the University of Prince Edward Island, while providing services to these retired racehorses. Jaynes believes everyone is benefitting from this experience without any external pressures.

“It is a good learning experience for our first-year veterinarians,” Jaynes said. “They can do the

work underneath the supervision of a senior clinician. This gives us a chance to go over the horse thoroughly without the pressure of an owner being there and do what’s best for the horse. It’s a nice symbiotic relationship between the TRF and us.”

A Baldwinsville native who was part of the Geneseo Equestrian Team at the 2014 Intercollegiate Horse Show Championships, Catalino believes by working with retired racehorses is going to help her path of continuing her work in equine sports medicine with the emphasis on lameness, imaging and cardiology.

“Since we are new vets and these horses need homes, we are out here to refine our skills with the horses and giving them some routine work they need,” Catalino said. “We also want to make them a profile so they can be adopted and what they can do once they are adopted.”

Competing in barrel races throughout Maine prior to moving to Canada for college, White knows this experience is significant coming out of college as he plans to work with horses who experience lameness, dental concerns, eye issues, or geriatric care.

“You are not going to know everything when you come out [of college],” White said. “If you have a comfortable place to learn, that’s the most important part.”

FRIDAY, AUGUST 24 New York Showcase Day

Travers Eve will be dedicated to New York-breds during New York Showcase Day at Saratoga Race Course. The afternoon’s card will feature six stakes exclusively for New York-breds, including the $250,000 Albany for 3-year-olds, the $200,000 Funny Cide for budding New York-bred stars, and the $150,000 West Point presented by Trustco Bank. The Knight Caps, the official glee club of the United States Military Academy, will perform their alma mater in the winner’s circle following the running of the West Point.

Red Jacket Ceremony

The day will be highlighted by the induction of four-time Eclipse Award-winning and two-time Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert into the Saratoga Walk of Fame during the annual Red Jacket Ceremony. The ceremony will take place adjacent to the winner’s circle following the day’s fifth race at approximately 3:30 p.m. During the event, Baffert will receive an emblematic Saratoga red jacket and his plaque will be formally unveiled to the public. The Saratoga Walk of Fame honors and showcases the achievements of those who have made significant contributions to the sport of thoroughbred racing and to the advancement of the Saratoga Race Course.

Saratoga County EOC Food Drive at Community Outreach Booth

The New York Racing Association will welcome the Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council (EOC) to Saratoga Race Course to host its annual food and essential goods drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fans are invited to donate non-perishable dry and canned goods as well as toiletries at the Community Outreach Booth, located on the Jockey Silks Room Porch and across from the Saratoga Walk of Fame. Fans who donate three or more items will receive a 2018 Saratoga baseball cap, while supplies last.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 25 TRAVERS DAY Travers Day

Saratoga’s most anticipated race - the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers will return for its 149th running as the feature on a blockbuster card. This year’s Travers is sponsored by Runhappy, a champion sprinter currently standing at Claiborne Farm.

In addition to Kentucky Derby runner-up and Haskell winner Good Magic, the Runhappy Travers field is expected to include Wonder Gadot, who will seek to become the first filly to win the Travers since 1915. Other probable starters include Jim Dandy winner Tenfold, Wood Memorial winner Vino Rosso, Belmont Derby winner Catholic Boy, Belmont Stakes runner-up Gronkowski, and Haskell runner-up Bravazo.

The Runhappy Travers will be one of six Grade 1s on Travers Day, which will also feature the $1 million Sword Dancer, the $700,000 Personal Ensign, the $600,000 Forego, the $500,000 Ketel One Ballerina, and the $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial presented by Runhappy. Rounding out the impressive card is the Grade 2, $400,000 Woodford Reserve Ballston Spa. Gates open at 7 a.m. with a special first post time of 11:35 a.m. All guests are subject to enhanced screening upon entering the grounds and will not be permitted to run once inside the property for their safety. This policy will be strictly enforced.

THE TRAVERS WINNERS, LOSERS, AND CHAMPIONS

for Saratoga TODAY We know this famed race for three-year olds at the classic distance of one and one quarter miles as the Mid-Summer Derby. It has been the main fixture here at the Spa for the last one hundred and fifty-two years.

The colts that have made their way here to contest the event read like a who’s who of the American Turf.

Let’s take a look at some of the great performances in this historic race.

The 1920 version brought the greatest champion of them all, the immortal Man O’ War to the Spa. A tremendous crowd came to see this eighth wonder of the world perform his magic. The fans got their money’s worth that mid-August day. The old stands were about to shake to their core. Not only did the greatest horse in the annals of turfdom win the race, he set a track record that stood the test of time. It wasn’t until fortythree years later that it would be equaled, we will discuss that shortly.

A decade later, the great Gallant Fox came here looking to add the Travers to his conquest of the Triple Crown earlier that Spring. The Fox went off as the odds-on favorite.

Ridden by the great Earl Sande, he looked like a mortal cinch. In the four-horse race was a colt named Jim Dandy. He went off at the odds of one hundred to one. In a startling upset, he galloped home by eight lengths leaving a stunned Gallant Fox in his wake. Saratoga was now known as The Graveyard of Favorites. It has held that reputation to this very day.

Let’s move on to 1941.

Storied Calumet Farms champion Whirlaway easily took all three Triple Crown races. He was the fifth horse to attain that feat. His trainer

Ben Jones now had his eyes firmly fixed on a trip to Saratoga to add the Travers to Whirlaway’s stellar resume. Race day only two others were entered. All they would see was the long bushy tail of the champ. He got the lead early and never looked back. Whirlaway had just become the only horse to take both the Crown and the Travers. Two others would make a bid. Neither one would succeed.

Let’s go forward twelve years to 1953. This was the year of the immortal Native Dancer. Owned by Alfred G Vanderbilt, he was a oncein-a-lifetime gift to the horse racing kingdom. If it wasn’t for a horrific trip in the Kentucky Derby, where he finished a close second to Dark Star, the Big Gray would be in every conversation as the greatest horse that ever stepped on to a racetrack.

The Dancer was no stranger to the Spa. He had won four races here as a two-year-old. He came back a year later with every intention of winning the Travers. And that he did. Bet down to a prohibitive favorite, Hall of Fame jockey Eric Guerin hand rode this great champion to an easy score. He returned one more time in 1954 for what would be his Swan Song. Laden with 137 pounds, he ended his career with an easy nine length romp in a special non-betting race. He is forever memorialized with a majestic statue at the onset of Congress Park, a gift from Mary Lou Whitney and John Hendrickson.

Later in the decade, the brilliant conditioner John Nerud took the 1957 version with Gallant Man.

Sword Dancer closed out the 50s with his Travers score in 1959.

Three years later lightning was about to strike at the Spa. It came in the name of two horses, Ridan and Jaipur. George D Widener’s Jaipur had just come off a Belmont Stakes triumph. Ridan had earlier lost the Preakness, in the closest finish in that event’s history. They were headed for a collision course.

And the Travers would be it. It was one for the ages. The immortal Bill Shoemaker had the mount on Jaipur. Ridan had the services of the great Panamanian Manuel Ycaza. The bell rang and both jockeys hustled for the lead. On the clubhouse turn they hooked up. From that point on they raced as one. Fred Capossela, America’s premier race caller of the twentieth century, saw it this way. Over and over he stated, “It’s Jaipur and Ridan”, then “It’s Ridan and Jaipur.”

Up the backstretch and into the far turn they were inseparable. Down the stretch a pin could not separate them. They hit the finish line as one. After reviewing the photo finish pictures, the stewards declared Jaipur the winner. He had beaten Ridan by a nostril.

He had also equaled the track record set by Man O ‘War. The greatest Travers Stakes of all time was now etched into history.

Later in that decade, it would be Ogden Phipps’ great champion Buckpasser. He took the Travers in 1966. A year later Damascus took home the cup. On a sloppy track he made one of the greatest moves in

the history of the sport. 17 lengths behind the leader on the backstretch, he blew past the field. At the finish line he was an astounding 22 lengths clear of the rest. It was an incredible performance.

1973 was the year of Secretariat.

We all know his credentials. He came here looking to take both the Whitney and Travers. The dream became a nightmare. In a shocker, he was beaten by a lightly regarded Onion in the Whitney. Trainer Lucien Lauren decided against running him back in the Travers.

Saratoga had seen the last of the legendary Secretariat.

Five years later, two Hall of Fame members were about to make this town rumble. It was the year of Affirmed and Alydar. They rhyme like Maris and Mantle, Dempsey and Tunney, sports names forever joined as one. In the Spring of 1978 these two went head to head in all three Triple Crown events.

Affirmed won everyone by slim margins over Alydar. So close were they, that the racing public was craving for one more. What better place than Saratoga and the Travers. The race had all the earmarks of a championship match. Over 52,000 fans converged on the grounds to see the event. All previous attendance marks were shattered. The race itself was a disaster. Laffit Pincay had the mount on Affirmed. Midway up the backstretch Jorge Velasquez was making his move on the rail. Pincay did not realize Alydar was there.

As he moved Affirmed closer to the inside, Alydar was banged into

the rail and almost went down. He was able to recover, only to come up second to his nemesis again. It didn’t take long for the stewards to disqualify Affirmed. The race was tainted. We will never know for sure who was the better horse that day.

Yet this Travers ranks high in racing lore here at the Spa. 1982 gets an honorable mention. Long shot Runaway Groom stunned the crowd when he beat the winners of all three Triple Crown events. Then in 1989 it was Easy Goer. This magnificent racehorse took both the Whitney and Travers. Five years later powerful Holy Bull prevailed on his way to Horse of the Year honors.

The second year of the Millennium brought Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Point Given here. He added the Travers to his brilliant resume and a Horse of the Year award for 2001. Saratoga’s sweetheart, Marylou Whitney, got hers when Nick Zito and Birdstone found the winners circle in 2004.

Eleven years later it was American Pharoah’s turn. He had just become America’s first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.

He came to town looking to join Whirlaway as the winner of both the Crown and the Travers.

Saratoga got a weekend to remember from this one. On Friday preceding the race, he was galloped around the oval to the delight of 15,000 fans in attendance. Then in a shocker, he was defeated the next day by Keen Ice. His bid to join Whirlaway had come up empty.

A year later it was mighty Arrogate’s turn. He simply demolished the track record for the event, with an eye-popping time of 1:59.36.

Last year turned out to be a repeat of 1982. Bob Baffert brought his colt West Coast here. He proceeded to tame all three winners of the 2017 Triple Crown events.

This Saturday 50,000 fans will be on hand to join in on the festivities of Travers day. Always a probability, a great race may be in the offing. I hope you enjoyed this look back at the many memorable renditions of The Mid-Summer Derby. If history tells us anything, we can count on many more great runnings of this spectacular event.

Saratoga Springs Recreation Department Fall Happenings Photos provided

SARATOGA SPRINGS — It’s that time of year again, sweater weather, pumpkin flavored everything, and for the Recreation Department, it’s soccer time.

“Our soccer program has been around for several years,” said Jill Ramos, program coordinator of the Saratoga Springs Recreation Department.

On September 8, the youth fall soccer programs kick into full swing. The fall soccer program consists of: Little Kickers, which is a parent/ child introductory program for pre-k students introducing them to the game and teaching basic fundamentals through activities; Big Kickers, which is for kindergartners, a step up in knowledge and games from the Little Kickers; both are weekend programs. City residents pay $60, school district residents pay $85, outside of the district residents pay $110.

The Youth Soccer League, for kids in grades 1-12, plays twice a week, typically on weeknights and on Saturdays. City residents pay $75, school district residents pay

$100, outside residents pay $125.

All soccer programs are co-ed.

Youth League is broken into teams, number of teams depends on how many players, and each team plays within the league.

“We have a good retention for coaches. They are usually parents of players, a lot of times, who played in college or play in adult leagues themselves. So, we’re able to pick from our pool of players themselves,” Ramos said of the coaching staff.

There are scholarships available for people, contact the Recreation Department for more details.

“The soccer program is one of the biggest programs that we run, and it will typically have about 470 players for the fall. We also have a spring league and summer clinics,” Ramos explained.

Both the fall and spring leagues are equally popular.

The Recreation Department also has a Pickleball League, which was started last spring, and is continuing in the fall for players 18 and up. The pickleballers meet on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the recreation center.

“Pickleball has become very popular with adults.

It’s a combination of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.

They play with smaller rackets.

It’s neat. We have drop-in session three days a week starting in September and they’re very popular. We’ll have all four courts playing,” Ramos said.

The league in the fall will follow the ladder style system.

The teams are set up so it is similar skill levels and they play on double round robins with other teams within the league and the points help determine who they play the next week.

Introduction to Ice Skating will now have an early fall session, on top of their winter, spring, and summer sessions.

The early fall session is for the skaters who just finished with summer and don’t want to lose momentum and for those who want to get a head start before the winter session. Introduction to Ice Skating is for ages three and up and the early fall session will begin October 2.

“We’re busy all year round,” Ramos commented.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Sunday, August 12, Saratoga Rowing Association’s (SRA) Junior Men’s Coxed Four team placed second in the Junior World Championships, which took place in the Czech Republic. The team members are: Henry Bellew, Owen King, Chase Haskell, Michael Fairley, and George Doty.

They are coached by Chris Chase Fairley is from Saratoga Springs.

“He is part of our high school team, he goes to Saratoga High. One of the coaches for the Junior World Championships is Chris Chase, who is our regatta director and our freshmen boys’ coach. He used to also be a teacher at Saratoga High School,” SRA executive director Eric Catalano.

In July, the Under 23 team also competed in Poland, they placed first in the U23 Women’s

Michael Fairley.

Junior Worlds Championship.

Double Sculls, featuring Sydney Michalak and Ashley Johnson.

The Seniors team will be competing in Bulgaria September 9-16.

Catalano describes the Senior World Championship as the “in between Olympics” competition.

With the Men’s Senior Quad heading to Worlds next month, their coach Emanuel Valentin had nothing but positive things to say.

“These four guys are incredibly driven to achieve their goals.

Two of them (Sam and James) moved from their respective cities, NYC and Philadelphia, to train with Michael and Alex on

two days’ notice. Michael is a fulltime student at RPI is also enrolled in the ROTC program. Alex just graduated from SUNY Albany with his Law Degree. With limited time together, we make large steps everyday towards improving and are looking forward to

representing the USA,” said coach Emanuel Valentin.

“For a rowing organization, I feel like this is a homerun or the trifecta, of being able to get the current athletes into each of those world championship events,” said Catalano.

SRYMCA Fall Basketball League

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Registration for the Saratoga Regional YMCA fall basketball league will be in full swing on Monday, September 10.

“We’re hoping to add two more teams to the fall league and that’s like what the growth has been, two teams each year, which is what we’re looking for this year,” explained league coordinator Mike Laudicina.

The decision to start early was based on the success of the summer league, which went from having six teams and 46 kids the year before and 72 kids and a two-team expansion this summer.

“I’d like to finish a little bit earlier because last year near the end, baseball was starting so we were losing a lot of players. It’s not fair to the team if somebody is a good athlete and they make the football team and they leave and all of a sudden you go from a team that depended

on one person,” he explained.

A lot of the same kids who played in the summer also play in fall as well.

Other than starting early, “everything is going to be about the same as last year. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” Laudicina laughed.

The coaching staff is full, with new coaches from the summer league also carrying over into the fall.

However, the fall league is still looking for two team sponsors.

The fall league will carry on its’ tradition of their end of season banquet courtesy of Saratoga Honda.

“I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to do the banquet again like we did last year but by getting that donation from Saratoga Honda, that money will go and pay for the banquet. Last year, I budgeted $2,200 because that would always cover it, and last year we doubled in size so all of a sudden I had a $5,000 bill and I didn’t have the budget to cover it,” he said.

Saratoga Honda has that

covered this year.

“In the summer league we ended up with a lot more girls, which is good, because that means that they’ll sign up for the fall. We had a young lady who played in the league two years ago, who was so timid, and quiet and would run back and forth with her hands down, she didn’t want the ball, but she wanted to play basketball. She didn’t want to make a mistake, but this year, she was a terror,” he laughed.

Laudicina’s goal for the basketball leagues is always healthy competition. He never wants one team to dominate over the others the entire season.

“You want everybody to be competitive. Everybody won games, and everybody lost games,” he said.

Saratoga Springs Firefighters 42 – Synergy Promotions 40 With the Firefighters scoring only 10 points in the first half, it didn’t look good for them. It started raining threes in the latter part of the second half and the Firemen pulled off an exciting two-point victory over Synergy. Both Sean Lee and Ryan Boyle put on an outside shooting display in the last eight minutes of the game with Sean hitting five three-pointers for a total of 15 points and Ryan dropping in three treys for nine points.

Teammate Joe Reynolds scored 11 points with nine of them coming in the first half and ripping down 14 rebounds. Arion Rose also scored 10 points in the win. Carter Cigan topped Synergy with 14 points and Caleb Beverly added 10 points.

Berkshire Hathaway Blake Realtors 49 – Saratoga PBA 29 The Realtors continued their undefeated season by beating PBA 49 to 29. With everyone contributing with stellar defense in the second half the winners were able to stretch a six-point halftime into a 20-point victory.

Logan Bevan had a game high 14 points, Niko VanValis 10 points, nine points from Stephen Bebee, six points for Gabe Berube and three points apiece from Tom Villano, Andrew Masten and Aiden Bevan. PBA was led by Alexander Savage with eight points while teammates Connor Johnson, Mason Cartier and Alex Cutler each had six points in the loss.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Come out and meet some of your favorite Ninjas from the hit TV show American Ninja Warrior.

Mark your calendars for August 28th to meet celebrity ninja’s Grant McCartney (The Island Ninja), Jake Murray and Samer Delgado.

The ‘Ninja Night’ will be held at Sinclair from 6-8 p.m. and will be free to the public.

Co-hosts and sponsors include Healthy Living New York and Henry Street Barber Shop and Rocksport New York...all of which will be giving out free merchandise, promotional material and samples for guests.

Saratoga Springs Pop Warner Football

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs Pop Warner (SSPW) is a non-profit organization under Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. that serves the Saratoga area specifically while being a part of the Capital District Pop Warner Federation, playing against teams from Albany and beyond. SSPW has three tackle teams and one flag team as well as three cheerleading squads.

Kim Delgado, current president of SSPW, stresses the importance of safety, fun, and wellness.

“Our oldest pee-wee team is the hardest to fill because it’s typically filled with sixth and seventh graders so we compete with the high school modified program, but Pop Warner is really a good program to do before they go into modified,” she explained.

The kids begin their conditioning hours on August 6, which, Delgado says, “is all in the

name of safety.”

“That’s a challenge for us too because we have the requirement of starting in August and getting all these hours in and people want to still have their summer,” she said of the multiple practice a week schedule.

As she explains it, the football players must go through a certain regiment for 10 hours before they can put any tackle pads on. Practice is four nights a week in August and cuts back to three nights a week once school begins.

“We teach them the fundamentals, make the parents feel comfortable about their kids playing football, because we know that is a huge challenge. We use the same tackling techniques and training that the high school does. The kids should be well prepared to go to modified teams and play,” Delgado said, explaining the importantance of SSPW. With their fees the lowest in the area at only $90, they

still offer scholarships, payment plans, and fundraising options to parents in need.

“We’re not really anymore unsafe than hockey or soccer. If parents did their research on what youth football is all about, we have some people who think of how it was in the eighties when the parents were in school. The safety protocols and all of that just wasn’t there then, but now we have them,” she said.

Delgado addressed that safety seems to be the main concern when a parent is on the fence about allowing their child to sign up.

“We have really well-trained coaches who really care about the safety of the kids. It’s just much different. For us, the challenge is getting people to the field and just getting them to our clinics in the summer to kind of feel comfortable with what the organization is about and how much we really do care about the safety” Delgado stated.

there are also 50 cheerleaders this year. Last year, the oldest team won the local competition and went to New Jersey; had they won there, they would have competed in Disney.

“That team is very hopeful this year that they’ll have another successful cheer season,” she said.

To kick off the season, teams from all over the Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. capital district umbrella will come to East Side Rec to play on Beau Kilmer Field.

Kilmer was a very famous Pop Warner coach in Saratoga.

“He was instrumental in Saratoga Pop Warner football and every year we do an annual scrimmage in his honor,” Delgado explained.

“We can’t tell people that nothing is ever going to happen; we can’t do that, it wouldn’t be right. But we do everything that we can to ensure the safety of their kids,” Delgado reassured.
