undreds of cars drive down McMaster Street in Ballston Spa on a daily basis, but few may notice the beautiful old bell that sits silently on display in front of Building 1 of the Saratoga County Complex.

This bell hung in Saratoga County’s third Courthouse which was erected in 1890 and stood on the location where Building 5 is today (50 West High Street). The bell was purchased from the Clinton H. Meneely Bell Company in Troy, New York for just over $800. The inscription on the exterior reads: Saratoga County Court House 1791-1891 Equal Justice to All Nullus Liber Homo Capiatur County Building Committee George L. Thompson William W. Sweet Stephen C. Medbery

The Latin phrase “Nullus Liber Homo Capiatur” means “Let no free man be seized.” The pealing of the bell was most likely a common background noise in the village, though it seems not everyone was thrilled with its melody. A small mention in The Schuylerville Standard published shortly after the bell was installed noted, “People who have been in the habit of hearing the cheery sound of the old court house bell at every session of court, are now called together by the lugubrious tones of the new bell.” (The Schuylerville Standard October 28, 1891) Like it or not, the bell rang frequently.

Besides being rung when court was in session, it was almost certainly used on special occasions and may also have signaled the time.

Thanks to newspaper articles, we know it was also used to alert village residents of danger. In December of 1892, accused murderer Martin Foy used a fake revolver consisting of a tin foil-covered stick to threaten the jailer into handing over the keys.

Foy was able to unlock the door and escape onto High Street. According to the Buffalo Currier, “County Clerk Grose, who saw the escape, at once rang an alarm on the courthouse bell and over 100 men started after the fleeing desperado up Remsen Street and across lots to McDonald’s grove, half a mile south of the village, where he attempted to conceal himself in the brush.”

(Buffalo Currier, December 16 1892). Thankfully, he was captured in short order. Incidentally, he was found by none other than Tommy C. Luther, well-known proprietor of the White Sulphur Springs Hotel.

On an early morning in August 1894, the courthouse bell rang feverishly to let villagers know that four prisoners had escaped the jail and were loose on the streets of Ballston Spa (Niagara Falls Gazette Aug 17, 1894). They had filed the lock off their cell door and tied bed sheets together to slide down the wall and run away.

Over time, the bell was probably used less and less, being replaced by more modern means of communication and time pieces. By 1961, the stately courthouse building over which the bell hung had begun to show its age and there was concern over the strength of the walls in the bell tower. The county decided to remove the 2,500 pound bell to ensure the safety of the public in making sure the structure did not fail. A contractor from Saratoga Springs was hired to remove the bell and as part of his payment, he would be allowed to keep it for salvage. Ballston Spa residents,

nostalgic for the sounds of the old bell, disagreed with this plan and came up with their own solution.

The Ballston Spa Village Board paid the salvager $500 to save the bell from being scrapped and decided to display the bell within the village.

A fundraiser collected $400 which was to be put toward purchasing a base or pedestal once the location question was settled.

While awaiting that decision, the bell was removed and stored on the second floor of the Ballston Spa Village garage on Thompson Street.

In 1968, tragedy struck. On Friday, March 8, the village garage caught fire and was completely destroyed.

However, the bell fared far better than the highway equipment stored inside. It was a bit worse for wear but still in one piece.

Then Director of Planning, Larry Gordon, had the bell removed from the rubble at the site of the garage and put plans in motion to finally give the tired old bell a place in the sun at the new Saratoga County Municipal Complex on McMaster Street. Two years later the 1891 courthouse bell was unveiled and dedicated on July 4, 1970. The Ceremony included Town of Charlton Supervisor Fred Hequemburg as Master of Ceremonies and several other speakers.

This year marks the fifty-first anniversary of the bell’s relocation to McMaster Street where it still resides, despite a massive fire and the threat of the smelter’s pot, thanks to a group of citizens concerned with its preservation.

We need to be flexible and are confident this extra time will allow all builders to completely finish their new homes so they can safely open to the public.

In addition, the tour has been shortened to two weekends beginning in October and includes the Monday, Columbus Day holiday.”

The Saratoga Builders Association hopes that these necessary changes to the traditional schedule will meet the challenges of the current situation. Destiny Ozani Matari Ramirez, 24, of Albany, was sentenced to 5 years of probation, after pleading to attempted burglary in the second-degree, in connection with an incident in Galway.

Martin P. Heeney, 58, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced June 30 to 5 years of probation, after pleading to criminal possession of a weapon in the third-degree.

Robert Kitchen, 55, of Mechanicville, pleaded June 28 to attempted sexual abuse in the first-degree.

Isaiah M. Macault, 24, of Albany, pleaded June 28 to robbery in the second-degree in connection with an incident in Moreau. Sentencing Aug. 20.

Eric J. Buell, 37, of Gansevoort, pleaded June 23 to felony DWI, in connection with an incident in Wilton.

Samuel Tyrel, 22, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced June 28 to 1 to 3 years incarceration, after pleading to failure to register as a sex offender.

Neil Devoe, 18, of Troy, was sentenced June 23 to 2.5 years in state prison, and 10 years post-release supervision, after pleading to rape in the second-degree, in connection with an incident in

Mechanicville in October 2020.

Devan D. Hildebrandt, 29, was sentenced June 23 to 1 year jail for each count to run concurrently, after pleading to two counts of burglary in the third-degree, in connection with an incident in Saratoga Springs.

Justen S. Roberts, 24, of Cohoes, was sentenced June 22 to 2.5 to 5 years in prison and 1 year local concurrent, after pleading to burglary in the thirddegree, in connection with an incident in Waterford.

Matthew J. Stephens, 20, of Wilton, was sentenced June 22 to 60 days in county jail and five years of probation, after pleading to grand larceny in the fourth-degree, in connection with an incident in December 2020.

Shamika Penn, 31, of Buffalo, was sentenced June 22 to time served and five years of probation, after pleading to grand larceny in the fourthdegree, in connection with an incident in Moreau.

Frank J. Flinton, 33, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced June 22 to 6.5 years plus 2 years

post-release supervision, in connection with charges of criminal sale of a controlled substance in the thirddegree, regarding incidents taking place in the town of Saratoga and the town of Wilton June 3 to July 15, 2020, and 1 year incarceration on charges of disseminating indecent materials to minors in the first-degree.

Erik J. Klebauskas, 44, of Wilton, was sentenced June 21 to five years probation, after pleading to aggravated DWI with a child.

POLICE Joseph Deschenes, 50, of Saratoga Springs, was charged June 21 with misdemeanor criminal trespass.

Chad Lang, 47, of Saratoga Springs, was charged June 22 with misdemeanor criminal trespass and felony burglary.

Justin Zayas-Sanchez, 21, of Saratoga Springs, was charged June 23 with criminal mischief as a felony.

Jordan Garafalo, 38, of Saratoga springs, was charged June 25 with felony assault, and the misdemeanors: criminal

mischief, menacing, criminal contempt, criminal possession of a weapon, harassment, act in manner injure child.

Vincent L. Avila, 22, of Schenectady, and Michael T. May, 25, of Mechanicville were charged June 24 in connection with an incident that occurred in a hotel in Malta on July 4, 2020. The incident was reported in April of 2021 and the investigation resulted in allegations that May hosted an overnight party from July 3, 2020 through July 4, 2020, at which he provided alcohol and marijuana to minors and where there was also sexual activity being conducted, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Department. It is further alleged that at the party, Avila had oral sexual contact with two females, one 16-years-of-age and one 17-years-of-age at the time.

Avila is charged with one count each of Criminal Sex Act and Sexual Abuse as well as Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Unlawfully Dealing with a Child. May, is charged with one count each of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Unlawfully Dealing with a Child.

SARATOGA COUNTY — CAPTAIN Community Human Services and its partners kicked off this year’s Free Summer Meals Program on Wednesday, June 7, at Mechanicville Elementary School.

On average, families spend $316 more on food during the summer months according to No Kid Hungry and the Center for Best Practices. The summer months also bring additional costs for childcare or summer camp for youth that would otherwise be in school.

According to No Kid Hungry, offering free summer meals not only improves physical health, but can have benefits for mental and emotional well-being. In addition, the program has longterm impacts, including increased high school graduation rates and reduced number of chronic disease.

The Free Summer Meals Program has been provided by CAPTAIN CHS since 1991, originating at the Community Outreach Center, Cheryl’s Lodge. It wasn’t until United Way of the Greater Capital Region funding was available that CAPTAIN CHS was

able to expand and begin serving all of Saratoga County. In 2020, CAPTAIN CHS served over 17,000 meals throughout Saratoga County.

Managed by the NYS Department of Education under the direction of and through funding from the USDA, this year Free Summer Meals will be provided to youth 18 and under at 20 different locations in Saratoga County through Sept. 3. Open site locations include Cheryl’s Lodge, D&R Village, the Greenfield Community Center, Kayadeross Acres, Louden Oaks, Malta Gardens, the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center, Mechanicville Housing Authority/JS Moore Homes, North Pointe Apartments, Park Avenue Playground, Pyramid Pines, Saratoga Hills, Saratoga Village, the Schuylerville Public Library, and the Waterford Town Pool. Other sites are available to local children in designated areas.

Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center Reopens SARATOGA SPRINGS — After months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center reopened to the public Thursday, July 8.

“We couldn’t be happier to reopen the Visitor Center,” said Darryl Leggieri, president of Discover Saratoga. “With summer travel heating up and COVID-19 restrictions lifted, it’s critical to have a place in our community where locals and visitors alike can go to gain important information about our city.”

The Heritage Area Visitor Center has adjusted its hours to Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Unvaccinated individuals are asked to maintain social distancing and wear a mask while inside the building.

Discover Saratoga has plans to offer community programs at

the Heritage Area Visitor Center throughout the summer, including the ever-popular Summer Concert Series in historic Congress Park.

This free, family-friendly event will take place Sundays in July (July 11-25) and Tuesdays in August (August 3-24) from 7-8:30 p.m.

Complete concert series schedule to be released soon.

Guided walking tours are available Tuesday-Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. outside the Heritage Area Visitor Center and are led by experienced guides.

Adirondack Center Stage Car Slate Valley Museum Welcomes Saratoga County Wash and Bake Sale in Corinth History Center Director for July 10 Event

CORINTH — Adirondack Center Stage (ACS) will be having a car wash and bake sale from 8 a.m.- 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 10 at the Cleveland Brothers parking lot at the corner of West Mechanic St. and Saratoga Avenue in Corinth. All proceeds will benefit their 2021 Summer Theatre Workshop.

The Summer Theatre Workshop is an intensive theater program for youth ages 8-18, bringing a high-quality production to Northern Saratoga County on the last weekend in July.

Saratoga Arts made this program possible with a Community Arts grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. GRANVILLE — On Saturday, July 10, the Slate Valley Museum will welcome Saratoga County History Center Director of Education Anne Clothier to present, Looking History in the Eye: A Brief Overview of 19th Century Photography, a program exploring nineteenth-century photography.

Clothier, a trained museum professional and historian, has a lifelong interest in historic objects and photography and has spent over two decades exploring, researching, and honing her own skills in reading and identifying historical photographs.

During this program, she will show attendees how to examine real daguerreotypes, tintypes, ambrotypes, cartes de visite, stereoviews, cabinet cards and other photographs and how to identify early photographic methods.

She will also teach techniques for interpreting images, as well as

ways to narrow down the date of an image.

This is a hands-on, discussion-filled program. Participants are welcomed to bring a magnifying glass and any early photographs or family albums that they may have at home.

The program will take place 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 10. It will be offered both on-site at the Museum and it will be online for people to stream live in their homes.

The price for in-person attendance is $10, or free for Museum members. Pre-registration is recommended as space is limited. Those who wish to attend can RSVP by calling 518-642-1417 or by emailing associate@slatevalleymuseum.org.

Assemblywoman Woerner’s Opioid Settlement Fund Legislation Signed into Law SARATOGA SPRINGS — Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, D-Round Lake, announced a bill she sponsored to create an Opioid Settlement Fund has been signed into law. The bill ensures opioid settlement money is used to assist those struggling with addiction through substance use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery programs.

“The ongoing opioid epidemic has had heartbreaking and deadly effects on families across the state, and the COVID19 pandemic has only intensified the struggle for individuals with substance use disorders,” said Woerner, in a statement. “Social

isolation and economic hardships have taken their toll on most of us, but those suffering from addictions have also been cut off from in-person counseling and treatment programs during the pandemic. The new Opioid Settlement Fund to ensure that funds recovered by New York from the manufacturers of harmful drugs are invested in services that will prevent addiction, reduce harm from addiction and support people in recovery. This legislation gives us a chance to fund the programs that are necessary to support those on the road to recovery.”

The Opioid Settlement Fund will ensure any money the state

receives from these settlements is used only for eligible expenditures, including substance use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery programs and public education campaigns to combat the epidemic. Additionally, the new law prohibits these funds from being used to supplant or replace existing state or federal funds that would be used for prevention, treatment and recovery programs or services.

Capital Region Infrastructure Projects Advance SARATOGA SPRINGS — Congressman Paul Tonko announced last week that five local projects totaling $19.955 million that he pushed for to receive federal funding have been advanced out of the House of Representatives, as part of a major infrastructure package, the INVEST in America Act. The Capital Region infrastructure projects passed out of House include: $6 million for the purchase of eight CDTA electric buses, $5.7 million for a continuous bicycle and pedestrian route that will connect the Cities of Watervliet and Troy and $1.055

million for Bicycle & Pedestrian Access Improvements for the town of Clifton Park.

The measure passed by a vote of 221-201, largely along party lines with two Republicans – Pennsylvania U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick and New Jersey U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith voting alongside 219 Democrats.

The House of Representatives also passed lifesaving limo safety measures authored by Tonko - a Democrat who represents the 20th Congressional District, following the 2018 Schoharie limo crash that took the lives of 20 people.

COUNCIL, PUBLIC RETURN TO CITY HALL IN BUMPY ENCOUNTER

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The long-awaited resumption of public meetings at City Hall was itself interrupted five minutes after it began.

As Rev. Joseph Cleveland addressed the council during the public comment portion of the meeting July 6, city Mayor Meg Kelly issued a warning to some in the assembled audience.

“If you’re going to be ‘hmmhmm’ and make remarks, we’re going to have you removed,” Mayor Kelly said. She subsequently demanded the room be cleared, declared “a recess,” and announced that the meeting was “adjourned.” The mayor, followed by some of the other members of the council, then left the room.

Some minutes later, council members returned to their seats and the meeting resumed.

Rev. Cleveland, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs, was one of a dozen public speakers, most of whom expressed concern and took issue with “divisive” remarks made by city Assistant Chief of Police John Catone during a press conference last week. Some of the speakers at the council meeting additionally requested a public apology be issued regarding some of the comments that were made. As to the meeting interruption and resumption, the City Charter states Open Meetings shall be conducted in accordance with Open Meetings laws of NY State, and “the Open Meetings Law is silent on how a meeting ends,” according to the state Committee on Open Government.

• Police Reform Task Force/ Civilian Review Board

Advisory Committee The Civilian Review Board, or CRB, was a key recommendation made by the city Police Reform Task Force, in response to the governor’s Executive Order, advisory committee member Jason Golub told the council Tuesday night. There are more than 200 CRB’s across the country, some of which are being evaluated by the committee, in order to present to the City Council a detailed plan on how to best implement a CRB in the local community.

“Our role is to provide the council with research that will allow you to confidently implement a CRB that makes sense; What I do not want for our city is a CRB in name only that ultimately does not meet the goals for which it was intended,” Golub said. “CRB’s can protect civilians and members of the police force… it is critical we get this right for our community, and this is where our focus will be.”

The goal is to provide monthly updates to the council and a full report by October that will include the development of the scope of the CRB’s power, and the budget required for a twoyear pilot program.

“The totality of our research will be provided to the city council and the public. It will then be up to the city council to determine what to do (with) the findings,” he said.

• Supervisor Tara Gaston, who represents the city at the county level, was appointed chair of the Saratoga County Health & Human Services Committee on Jan. 6. Six months later, Gaston reports she has been removed from that position of leadership, as well as from the committee itself altogether.

Gaston’s announcement took the Saratoga Springs City Council by surprise; some council members publicly expressed they thought Gaston had done positive work in the position, particularly in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I was told that I did not show proper respect to my colleagues. I will say that I made comments that may have not been appropriate at that particular moment. I recognized that and apologized for that at the same meeting. I did not make any comments or do anything that has not been done many times by other supervisors, and in that same meeting had another supervisor refuse to respond when I asked, as chair, to stop talking over me. So, I don’t believe I did anything wrong, but the (Board of Supervisors Chairman Todd Kusnierz) has the authority and ability to remove anyone, as they choose,” Gaston said.

“In government, it’s not uncommon to make changes in leadership positions on a regular basis, and this is no different as we work to ensure we best meet the needs of Saratoga

County residents,” Kusnierz said.

“She has performed as chair of the committee well representing Saratoga County.”

“I’ve been engaged and active in that committee to help recover from what took place at the county earlier in the pandemic.

There is still a lot of work to be done – both with COVID and the Public Health Department expansion – and I believe I am one of the few people on the Board that has the knowledge base and the experience to be able to this properly and efficiently,” Gaston said.

“And to not even sit on the committee anymore…I think that’s a disproportionate response.”

Supervisor Darren O’Conner, of Malta, is expected to be named chair of the Health & Human Services Committee at the next Board of Supervisors meeting later this month.

• New Fire/EMS Station Sean Foran, of Huber Breuer Construction in Syracuse, provided an update to the council of the city’s proposed new Fire/EMS station on Henning Road. The station – which will be the city’s third – will serve residents of the east side.

The design process is anticipated to begin in August, leading to a bid and contract award process in 2022. “A bid process in early 2022 would allow the project to proceed in April or May 2022, and would allow owner occupancy in the spring of 2023,” Foran told the council.

The total product budget is approximately $6.7 million, and the building, with an entry road on Henning Road, will hold three double-deep, drive-through bays to house 6 full-size apparatus for the fire department, and will overall measure to about 16,000 square feet.

“We’re working for our residents, working together, saving the taxpayers money and getting the job done,” says Mike Monroe, deputy highway superintendent for the town of Wilton, while involved in a street-paving collaboration with the town of Greenfield, resulting in both town Highway Departments working together.

The New York State Office of the State Comptroller published its 37-page guide, “Shared Services in Local Government,” shortly after the financial crisis of 2008.

Shared services help municipalities increase effectiveness and efficiency in their operation, reduce or avoid costs, and improve service delivery or help to maintain services, according

to the report, which encourages “municipal corporations” and “districts” to cooperate with each other in carrying out their respective responsibilities.

How to get started? Local governments should perform a “needs assessment” to determine if an existing function can be provided more cost effectively or more efficiently through a cooperation agreement. The guiding principle is that each municipality should achieve some benefit through the cooperative agreement.

The towns of Wilton and Greenfield border one another and each borders the city of Saratoga Springs.

The town of Greenfield Highway Department, located in Porter Corners, provides residents with road repairs and

improvements; winter snow and ice removal; and roadway safety features, drainage repairs and improvements, and bridge maintenance.

The town of Wilton Highway Department is responsible for maintaining approximately 100 center-line miles of town roads, from snow removal and ice control to paving and maintenance of roads, signage, roadway markings, drainage, tree and brush cutting. County roads are maintained by Saratoga County.

A street-paving job was scheduled to take place on Hillside avenue and on Hudson avenue. Both feed off State Route 9, near Loughberry Lake.

“Part is in the town of Greenfield, part is in the town of Wilton,” Monroe says. “We decided to get it all done in one shot.”

The town of Wilton used their new paver, the town of Greenfield helped with traffic control, conducted handwork and provided some trucks.

“The town of Greenfield called me and said they were going to overlay their part of the road in Greenfield and to see if we could do something on our end.

I talked to our board and got the funds and decided we were going to do our half too,” says Monroe, a Wilton native who has been with the town highway department for the past 20 years.

Kirkland Woodcock, who celebrated his 80th birthday in March, announced his retirement this year after serving as Wilton’s Highway Superintendent since the 1980s.

The position is an elected one and Monroe hopes to take on that role.

He will be running for election to the two-year term in November.

“This is the first time we paved with another town. Usually, a town will pave a road up to where their town line is and then it’s up to the next town to get the job finished -but on this project

we worked together to get it done,” Monroe says.

“It’s beneficial for the taxpayers because we’re working together. Instead of me having my whole crew here, I can have some guys out mowing guardrails and doing cemetery work, because working with another town I don’t have to have all my guys here,” he says. “I think we would do it again if it makes sense, and in certain cases it does make sense to work together with another town to get a project done.”

Lombardo Opens New Saratoga Springs Law Office, Puts Family First SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jacqualine C. Lombardo opened Lombardo Law in May, a law practice with a focus on family law and criminal defense matters.

After four-and-a-half years as Executive Director of Support Ministries, Inc., an Albany based supportive housing program for homeless individuals with chronic health conditions, Lombardo says her passion for advocacy in the courtroom became so apparent that opening her own practice was the best and right next step.

“My opinion on being a lawyer is that it is one of the most

important professions one can practice. As an attorney, we hold people’s life-outcomes in our hands,” Lombardo said, in a statement. “We can change the trajectory of the future of communities, states and government. We are the fighters of justice and so our responsibility is just that.”

Lombardo graduated Western Michigan University, Cooley Law School in 2013. While a student attorney with the Access to Justice Clinic, she provided two terms of legal representation to indigent persons in family law matters, externship with ACLU

Hawaii in its legislative intern program and completed two legal research papers addressing the Violence Against Women’s Act and its application to immigrants and the Constitutional implications of the 4th, 5th, 6th and 14th Amendment on those involved in child abuse and neglect proceedings. She currently sits on the Attorney for Children Panel in Saratoga County.

Summer Events at the New & Improved Saratoga Children’s Theatre

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Children’s Theatre (SCT) has big plans this summer for their brand-new space.

For the last 12 years, since they formed in 2008, the SCT has rented all over the city of Saratoga to rehearse – the senior center, the town hall, Saratoga Springs High School, and even traveling to Round Lake to perform.

Their new, permanent space at 615 Maple Avenue has everything they need at one site: dance studios with a semi-sprung floor and full-mirrored walls, private lesson space, office space, and a black box theater.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Leigh Berenis, Executive Director of the Saratoga Children’s Theatre, about moving into the new space. “I’ve been with the company for 6 years now, and it’s been at the top of my list. It’s kind of crazy taking on a huge space but it’s the dream.”

They are past stage one of construction, and are fully moved in. To move on to stage two, which includes getting seating and lighting for the black box theater, they will need to keep raising money and finding grants.

“We are a small nonprofit, and a big misconception with theater is that it’s a frivolous activity,” said Berenis. “But it’s so much more than that. It’s learning to public speak, to work as a team in an ensemble, learning in-depth about script analysis and character analysis, how to speak about and tap into your emotions. We work with so many underprivileged kids, and we don’t turn anyone away for a scholarship even if we don’t have the funds available, we will always figure it out.”

do a basic song and dance performance every week. The 7-12 age group learn to incorporate more acting and performing techniques in their 30 to 40 min. performances, and the teens put on full-length shows.

“We hope that we can help out the community and have people here using this space all year round,” said Berenis. “It’s been a tough year for everybody and since we have the space to have

a market and draw people here to support every kind of business that we can possibly support, then we are going to do it. That’s what the idea was behind the Community Market.”

There is no fee to attend the Community Market or Open Mic. The Open Mic is a way for anyone to get out and perform – children and families, poetry, or bands, etc.

Roller Coaster Summer Camp SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Innovation Center at Saratoga, Inc. is kicking off its programming this summer with two one-week sessions of a Roller Coaster Camp in association with Clarkson University. Camp will be held July 26-30 and again August 2-6 at the Maple Ave. Middle School.

The camp offers rising 7th and 8th graders the opportunity to experience the creation of a roller coaster and theme park while working in small teams. Students will learn the science behind roller coasters, use Roblox to create their dream coaster as part of a theme park and visit the Great Escape to see a theme park in action.

Camp registration includes four days of in-class exploration of physics, math, computers and artistic components as students learn to theme their parks and coasters, and one day at the Great Escape.

Salvation Army Receives Hotspots to Help Address Homework Gap CAPITAL REGION — As students and teachers cross the threshold from a full year of remote learning and begin to address the learning loss resulting from it, AT&T and leading national nonprofit Connected Nation are continuing work to put the connectivity solutions vital to education into the hands of those who need it most.

AT&T has announced that it has given two local Capital Region organizations, the Albany Fund for Education and The Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs, 1,000 free wireless hotspots as well as free internet connectivity for one year. Each organization has received 500 hotspots with free connectivity. They are part of more than 100 organizations and school districts that will benefit from a $10 million commitment from AT&T, first announced last year, to provide free internet subscriptions and wireless hotspots to 35,000 vulnerable students across the country.

The Albany Fund for Education and The Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs will distribute the hotspots to under-resourced students across the Capital Region.

The hotspots come at a critical time for many students – the final months of the school year – with many students in remote or hybrid

learning, and ahead of summer break, where home connectivity can be used to catch up from learning loss caused by the pandemic.

Students will have the opportunity to use the free connectivity to prepare for the 2021-2022 school year and will have the connectivity available when school begins in the fall to assist with homework and other learning opportunities to position them for educational success.

An estimated 17 million K-12 students nationwide and approximately 11,000 students in the Capital Region currently lack access to the connectivity and devices required for successful online learning. While this homework gap is not new, the pandemic has heightened the challenges – most acutely in rural and underresourced neighborhoods, where the effects of the pandemic have disproportionately impacted 1 in 3 students of color, students with disabilities, and roughly 10 percent of all public school teachers.

The Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs will distribute the 500 hotspots with free wireless connectivity they are receiving from AT&T to assist with the issues many students and families face with remote education and access to the internet for school.

the hotspots directly to families across Glens Falls, Schenectady, Troy, Albany, Gloversville, and Saratoga Springs. Providing direct access to the internet for education will allow children to set the foundation for a better, more secure future. Since the start of COVID-19, The Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs has helped serve 61,951 meals and 175,000 pounds of food, has assisted more than 50 families with paying rent and utilities, and has continued to find ways to help those in need.

by Kristen Hislop for Saratoga TODAY I’m guessing your kids are signed up for a sport this summer or maybe they will participate in sports at summer camp. The coaches and counselors will focus on skills like dribbling the basketball, shooting the soccer ball, bouncing a tennis ball on a racket and other sport specific skills. But how many will report that they did any running? Too often the focus is on the specific sport and yet almost every sport involves running! What is challenging about running and why should your child practice? Running is the basis of all sports!

The following fundamental movements are the best for recruiting muscles, increasing coordination, and building the basis for future skill development.

1. Throwing and Catching 2. Jumping/Hopping 3. Running 4. Kicking 5. Ball Bounce 6. Stopping/Starting We quickly encourage our kids to focus on all, but often with very little emphasis on number 3. Running is part of just about every sport! Does this mean your athlete should be putting in miles every day? Absolutely not.

For kids it is all about fun and movement. However, paying a little bit of attention to how we move can set them up for success later on - whether in competitive sports or entering that first 5K in their 30s!

If I could meet with your kids and offer advice, I would encourage the following: 1. Eyes focused forward throughout the run 2. Feet landing right below hips

3. Arms bent at elbows and drives back 4. Feet land at midfoot 5. Body lean is from the ankle Sports programs start for kids as young as 3-5. The free Kids Runs at the Freihofer’s Run for Women offer opportunities from 50m up to the mile and we have kids running, walking, and toddling! As they get older the distances can increase which is why we offer the Junior 3K for kids up to the age of 14. This 1.86-mile run is the perfect distance for those who like to use running to stay active and maybe help their other sporting endeavors.

Proper form does matter - at all ages!

Fun and functional should be the focus.

On the Road Again “MOTHERING BOYS” e do picnic-type meals with some frequency during the summer, whether at the lake or the park or on road trips.

Figuring out foods that are fairly easy to prepare and eat, can be made in large quantities, travel well, and have a high likelihood of being eaten by the majority of my children has been a task I’ve spent a lot of time on.

When I was growing up, any time we were going to be in the van for a while, my mom would bring a loaf of bread and a package of bologna or sliced ham and pass back sandwiches as kids were hungry. To this day, bologna on bread is one of my favorite things to eat, no joke! But the family I’ve created with my husband doesn’t care for bologna on bread, or ham on bread (some of them don’t like anything on bread, crazy kids!), so I’ve had to get creative with food-on-the-road. Here are some of our recent favorites:

Meatballs or Meatball Sliders It’s so easy to put a tray of frozen meatballs in the oven for twenty minutes, let them cool for ten, and then pop them in a container to go. I’ve done this while getting everyone and everything ready for whatever excursion we’re setting out on. I bring a bag of rolls (already sliced, or I pry them open with my fingers) and put one meatball in each one for an easy slider. I also bring a bunch of forks for those who don’t like sandwiches and hand out meatballs speared on the end of the forks like lollipops, which the younger kids especially like.

Hot Dogs As with the meatballs, I put the hot dogs on a tray in the oven for twenty minutes and let them cool for ten. If I have enough time, I like to then put each hot dog in a bun and then wrap it up in parchment paper or foil — my kids tend to get more excited about food that’s individually wrapped (and honestly, so do I!).

If I don’t have the time, or I know people are feeling extra anti-sandwich-y that day, I’ll put the hot dogs in a container and bring the buns and some forks, just like with the meatballs.

Chicken Nuggets Like with the meatballs and hot dogs, the frozen nuggets go in the oven on a tray for twenty minutes and then cool for ten. In our house, a cooked component (even if it’s no longer hot by the time we eat it) is fairly crucial to happy on-the-go eating, and chicken nuggets are particularly kid-friendly.

Pizza Bites Yes, one last heat-and-go option! I get a huge bag of pizza bites — usually just cheese so my littlest guys don’t freak out (which also makes this good for Meatless Friday families) — and put them in a big container. It’s really cute to see my boys standing around the big bowl of pizza bites, popping one after another — there’s something really appealing about a container of easy finger foods.

Quesadillas My last go-to option requires a bit more hands-on work, but takes less time overall. I cook simple quesadillas in a frying pan: just tortillas and cheese, which makes this another great meatless option. When I’m making quesadillas for an at-home meal, I’ll include chicken and veggies, but for travel, cheese is good enough.

This is another food that wraps up nicely in individual portions — I cut them into wedges and wrap two or more wedges up in parchment or foil for easy distribution.

The items mentioned above serve as the “anchor” of my on-the-go meals — a part of a formula I use every time: main dish plus chips plus fruit plus dessert. I buy those big bags containing individual chip bags, as well as fruit (fresh when I can take the time to wash it and figure out a good crush-proof container — grapes are some of the easiest to travel with, as are a bag of clementines — but often applesauce pouches, which are so easy) and usually a dessert (a box of cookies, for example). The container of cooked food, the fruit, and the dessert fit inside a reusable shopping bag, and the big bag of chip bags gets carried alongside. Easy peasy! I generally don’t worry about plates, but I do try to make sure to bring a lot of napkins. And having the boys bring their school water bottles is the easiest beverage solution.

Witnessing the Economic Recovery FOR ANYONE WITH AN ECONOMICS BACKGROUND the last year has been an interesting

opportunity to witness the theories and accepted tenets put to the test. We’ve seen an unprecedented shutdown of much of the private sector, a displacement of workers in nearly every sector, a breakdown of the supply chains providing the basic necessities of everyday life, and a massive taking from future taxpayers to help keep businesses and households afloat while government agencies debate a myriad of policy solutions of varying efficacy.

At its core, what this year has shown us is that economies are far too large and infinitely interconnected to be manipulated with precision: every policy has unintended consequences. Some of these turn out to be beneficial, and some to our detriment.

Because the economy was in such a strong position prior to the pandemic, we believe the timeline and breadth of the recovery will be relatively short and wide. Had we been in an economic downturn at the end of 2019, we would be singing a very different tune.

The US government pumped $5 Trillion into the economy last year in an effort to help households and businesses bridge the pandemic. While the intention is laudable, it is not without consequences. This money will need to be paid back at some point, with interest, by our children and grandchildren. Expect future tax rates to consequently be higher than today.

Having increased the money supply by 30% in just one year, the economy is now awash in cash, and is ripe to experience higher rates of inflation than many of us have seen in a very long time. For over a decade, inflation has been extremely tame, but that is unlikely to last. Cases in point: the price of gas is up over 20% from pre-pandemic levels, and used cars are up 30% while clothing is up 7%. Higher inflation hurts the most economically vulnerable among us, including low-income families and the elderly, and may further exacerbate social inequities we are purportedly committed to quelling.

A lack of supply is also working to drive up prices.

Everything from chicken wings to motor vehicles are seeing steep price increases due to strained supply chains and heightened demand. While some of this is simply due to a lag from the time production resumes to when consumers receive goods, a large part is also due to a lack of the most basic resource in production: labor.

There are some who will say that the current unemployment benefits are not high enough to replace lost wages, and therefore cannot be a disincentivizing workers from returning to work. That simply isn’t true.

Even if we grant that benefits are not high enough to replace earnings in every case, for the remainder we need to acknowledge that there is a benefit derived from just not doing anything. In other words, for many, the sum of the benefit derived from staying home, and the benefits received from the State is higher than the benefit of returning to work. While that’s wellintentioned, it’s not helpful to the recovery.

If I’m wrong, you won’t see any improvement in unemployment figures as benefits wind down.

Furthermore, since we’re paying people to stay home, potential employers are not competing for labor at the market rate, they are competing with the State for labor at a subsidized rate. As a result, we’re seeing huge increases in wages for traditionally low-paying jobs.

Many fast food restaurants in our area are offering more than $15.50/hour to start, and teen employment is at its highest level in decades as teens happily take jobs from those still sitting on the sidelines. Higher input costs yield higher output prices.

Markets are efficient, somet imes painf ully. These issues will generally work themselves out on the macro level, but that means many may be left worse off in the wake.

As unemployment benefits wane, a glut of labor is likely to hit the workforce, which could actually end up driving down wages in many sectors, especially for workers in lower-skilled positions. With prices likely to increase for some time, these workers will be even more greatly impacted.

While we don’t expect the hyper inflation of the 1980s, we do expect higher inflation than many have ever experienced. At some point, sooner than many anticipate, the Fed will need to raise interest rates, which will have a cascading effect through the economy. As the cost of borrowing increases, businesses will be less able to build or upgrade

factories and equipment to increase production. The cost of home ownership will continue to rise.

It’s not all doom and gloom, and we think the coming year should continue to improve for most, but we are concerned about the longterm well-being of those who may be less able to adapt to what could be a rapidly changing economic landscape.

With all of the changes we’re sure to experience as the recovery picture becomes more clear, it’s as important as ever to make sure you work closely with your CFP® to chart your path through the recovery, and to capitalize on opportunities wherever they may be. Your commitment to your goals doesn’t change, but your strategy may need to.

As the name suggests, a repetitive strain injury is a type of injury that occurs when you spend too much time repeating the same movement over and over again. Just about anyone can develop an RSI. A computer worker might develop an RSI to their wrists if they spend too much time typing without resting their hands.

different types of RSIs, including the following: • Carpal tunnel syndrome • Tennis elbow • Golfer’s elbow • Tendinitis • Plantar fasciitis RSIs can be quite painful. They also can make it harder for you to move your joint through a full range of motion.

RSI Symptoms Pain is the most common symptom associated with an RSI. You’ll likely notice pain when you perform a specific movement or after you’re finished performing it.

As the injury progresses, you may start to experience pain while doing unrelated activities.

Some other symptoms include hypersensitivity and poor coordination. You might experience tingling or numbness in the affected area as well.

Traditional RSI Treatments Often, when a person is diagnosed with an RSI, there are a few different treatments their doctor will recommend. Common treatments include the following: • Medication (including over the-counter or prescription antiinflammatory drugs)

• Hot-cold therapy • Steroid injections • Surgery to correct nerve/ tendon issues

products and heal more quickly.

This, in turn, can help to reduce your pain and make the recovery process much more efficient.

Sometimes, these treatments are the only option to help you heal from your RSI. In many cases, though, there are other, more natural remedies that you can utilize first.

The increased blood flow brought on by massage can help promote faster tissue regeneration, too.

Why Use Massage for Repetitive Strain Injury Treatment?

Massage therapy is a great alternative or complementary treatment to some of the popular treatments listed above.

They don’t get to the root of the issue, though.

Improved Range of Motion As you joints, muscles, and tendons begin to heal, you’ll find that it’s much easier for you to move your joints through a full range of motion once again.

You won’t have to worry about compensating with other muscles and will be able to move in the most efficient and effective way possible.

Decreased Injury Risk In addition to helping you move better, regular massages can help to decrease your risk of developing RSIs in the future.

Often, when an RSI occurs, it’s because you’re not taking proper care of the joint (or joints) that you rely on most often.

By making massage a priority, you can ensure that those joints get the attention they need in order to function well. As a result, you’ll be less likely to need to take time off and rehabilitate them later on.

Improved Relaxation Getting regular massages to help with your RSI can also help you relax and feel less stressed out, too.

When you’re relaxed and managing your stress in a more effective way, your body has more resources at its disposal to help you heal. This, in turn, will help you get back to work or back to your sport of choice much sooner.

These words from Lovin’ Mama Farm owners Corinne Hansch and Matthew Leon, explain why they farm. Using organic and regenerative methods to grow food helps heal the earth and represents farming as stewardship.

For Leon, farming enabled an intersection between nature, the outdoors, and a basic need for food.

Lovin’ Mama joined the Saratoga Farmers’ Market this year and offers Certified Organic vegetables, microgreens, herbs, and cut flowers each Saturday.

They started Lovin’ Mama in northern California, regenerating an abandoned field with plantings of such perennials as fruit trees, berries, and asparagus.

Then, a blow came: The landowner terminated their lease, leaving them homeless and their hearts broken.

Hansch and Leon use no-till methods that have given their soil resilience amid climate change. “We lay down a thick layer of our compost/peat moss mix right on top of the bed, then plant right into that,” they explain. “The worm activity is just amazing, the thick layer of compost suppresses weeds, and the plants go crazy with growth.”

Without tillage, they explain, soil aggregates form, enabling the holding and acceptance of water. Soil neither dries out in times of drought nor floods during heavy rains.

Hansch grew up with parents who were market gardeners. She worked on farms along the West Coast and studied biology. Leon grew up in New York City and studied agricultural ecology. He was more a lover of the outdoors than of farming – until he met Hansch.

Their love story began in a permaculture course.

There, they saw how sustainable farming could create

For farmers like Hansch and Leon, losing land is like losing a loved one. However, when Leon’s father offered them space to farm land he owned in Amsterdam, they knew they could begin anew.

In New York, they have built a network of CSA subscribers, market goers, employees, and family.

Leon’s parents offer child care and other support; a niece manages one of their farmers’ markets, and their children – Sam, 15; Oak, 13; and Rosemary, 9 – are skilled, trustworthy workers who grew up with the farm, love it, and know it intuitively.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wilton Mall and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. at High Rock Park.

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 2 bunches of carrot top greens*, destemmed

• 3 garlic cloves

• 1/2 cup basil*

• 1/4 cup olive oil*

• 1/2 cup walnuts

• 1 lime, juiced • 1 tsp Himalayan salt

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Place the garlic and walnuts into a food processor. Blend until emulsified.

2. Add the remaining ingredients and blend. You may also add water in tiny amounts to help thin or continue using oil. Continue to blend until smooth. Enjoy on sandwiches, in pasta, on power bowls or in salads, as a dipping agent from summer veggies.

It is summer and we are experiencing the wealth of warmer temperatures.

With the soaring temperatures, we are left wondering about how to

To cruise through the summer heat and loss of fluids and essential nutrients, seasonal fruits are a recommendation. Especially, when taking long trips or hanging out in your flip-flops. Eating summer fruits can be a healthy way to keep your body cool and additionally get all the goodness of nature.

As I think back on my childhood memories and raising my own children, the challenge was to keep as much fruit in the house as a go to for all of us. One fruit that has always been one of my favorites are cherries. I can remember the sheer joy of seeing my mom bringing a heaping bowl of bright red cherries to the table. We now know that eating cherries as a part of a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables may provide health benefits. Cherries are a good source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant. Cherries are also low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Summer is cherry season time, and that means time for cherry pie, cherry crumble, cherry cobbler, cherry preserves, cherry sauce to drizzle over vanilla ice cream; you get the idea. But before you break out your baking dish and turn on your oven, you will need to remove the pits of these sweet ruddy fruits. A good cherry pitter that removes the stone and leaves the fruit intact can be a cook’s best friend this time of year. We carry an assortment of cherry pitters. INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted, cooled to room temperature • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

• 1/2 tsp baking soda

• 1 Tablespoon cornstarch

• 1/2 tsp baking powder

• 1 Tablespoon lemon juice

• 1/4 tsp salt

• 1 tsp granulated sugar

• 2 cups fresh cherries, pitted, each sliced in half

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Line a square 8” baking pan with parchment paper. Butter the sides and bottom of lined pan.

Set aside.

3. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together cherries, cornstarch and lemon juice.

4. In a large mixing bowl, stir together melted butter and sugar. Add flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt and stir with a fork until the mixture resembles crumbs.

Cutlery store, we carry cherry and olive pitters that can quickly and easily remove pits from cherries and olives without bruising or crushing fruit or waste fruit. They are perfect for canning, freezing, dehydrating and baking cherries. You can freeze sweet cherries to enjoy in baked goods, smoothies, and sauces throughout the year. Simply rinse the cherries with cool water and remove the stem. Pitting them is your choice. They’ll lose some juice, but they’re easier to pop into a recipe later if they’re frozen sans pit. Once the cherries have been pitted, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and place in the freezer overnight to freeze. After they’re completely frozen, put them in an airtight container or freezer bag to store in the freezer until you’re ready to use them. You won’t even need to thaw them before using them.

5. Reserve 3/4 cup of mixture. Press remaining crumb mixture into the bottom of prepared pan.

6. Spread cherry filling over the crust.

7. Sprinkle remaining crumb mixture over cherries.

8. Sprinkle sugar over crumb topping.

9. Bake bars for 23 to 25 minutes OR until the top is golden.

10. Cool completely before cutting.

Public Art Demonstration Southern Saratoga Art Society is hosting a free and open to the public demonstration by artist Mark Tarabula on Monday, July 26 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. To register please visit: southernsaratogaartist.com.

Workshop for Farmers Cornell Cooperative Extension is holding a workshop to educate farmers about two new serious pests that are now in our region – tall waterhemp and the soybean cyst nematode. The workshop is July 27 from 1-3:15 p.m. at 4-H Training Center, 556 Middleline Rd., Ballston Spa (info and registration at tinyurl.com/6h4uuyv9). Two NYSDEC pesticide applicator credits can be earned. Dr. Lynn Sosnoski (Cornell Univ.) will teach farmers how to identify tall waterhemp as well as its other pigweed relatives.

Farmers will also learn its biology and management. Dr. Jaime Cummings (Syngenta) will discuss the biology and management of the soybean cyst nematode, the costliest soybean pest in the United States. There is no charge to attend the workshops, but preregistration is required. All

SARATOGA SPRINGS — NYC Ballet Musicians & Friends, under the artistic direction of Luellen Abdoo, begins a new association with Bethesda Episcopal Church, to celebrate the return of the ballet to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center after the 2020 hiatus.

For more than 20 years, Ms. Abdoo has organized chamber music concerts in Saratoga Springs performed by musicians of the ballet orchestra during their annual residency at SPAC. The invitation to the music making is

also extended to musical friends both near and afar.

The 2021 chamber music ensemble features: Luellen Abdoo, violin; Eugene Moye, Associate Principal Cellist of the New York City Ballet Orchestra; and Christopher Oldfather, piano.

They will perform the Schubert: Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op. 148 “Nocturne”, the Rachmaninoff: Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor for violin, cello and piano, Telemann’s Sonatina No. 1 in A Major for violin, cello and piano, and Schumann’s Three Fantasy Pieces for cello and

piano. As a special feature, Tango Sonata for violin and piano by composer Ron Wasserman will be performed. The composer is the Principal Bassist of the New York City Ballet Orchestra.

The one-hour chamber music concert is scheduled for Sunday, July 11 at 4 p.m. at Bethesda Episcopal Church, 26 Washington St., Saratoga Springs. There is a suggested donation of $10 per person. Home Made Theater Holds Open Auditions July 12-13 for Almost, Maine SARATOGA SPRINGS — Home Made Theater announces open auditions for their September/October production of Almost, Maine, written by John Cariani, and directed by Michael McDermott. These auditions will be held on Monday and Tuesday, July 12-13, at Saratoga Arts, 320 Broadway in Saratoga Springs.

Sign-in is 6:30-7 p.m. and auditions are 7-9 p.m.

The cast consists of two women and two men, ages 20-60. Actors play multiple parts.

Depending on audition numbers, a third couple may be added. All ethnicities and gender identities

are encouraged to attend.

Almost, Maine is a romantic comedy comprised of nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almosttown called Almost, Maine. The play is bracketed by a discussion between two lovers, Pete and Ginette, who are gradually in the process of revealing their love to each other.

Auditions will consist of a monologue reading (which will be provided; no memorization required), improvisation, and readings from the script (which will also be provided). Dress comfortably.

Rehearsals will start with a read through on July 19. Regular, in-person rehearsals start Aug. 9. Exact days and times are to be determined based entirely on the cast and crew’s availability (summer vacations and plans can be worked around if known in advance).

Rehearsals will be held in an area that is near downtown Albany until Tech Week, beginning on or about Sept. 19, when the production moves to the performance venue, Saratoga Arts in Saratoga Springs.

24-26 and Oct. 1-3, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

Rochmon Record Club Listening Party No Doubt – “Tragic Kingdom” SARATOGA SPRINGS — Rochmon Record Club presents No Doubt “Tragic Kingdom,” on Tuesday, July 20 at Caffe Lena.

The Rochmon Record Club converges Live in Caffe’ Lena (limited Seating) and Virtually via Zoom to listen to, and learn about, No Doubt’s 3rd album “Tragic Kingdom!” Released in 1995, “Tragic Kingdom,” No Doubt’s most successful album, dominated the radio from Late 1995 through most of 1996. Featuring the hit songs “Spiderwebs, “Just a Girl,” Don’t Speak,” “Excuse Me Mr.”, “Sunday Morning” and 9 more. This classic album from the mid 90’s was written and recorded by a band on top of their game and falling apart at the same time.

The Zoom feed will begin at 6:30 p.m. with an audio stream and chat, the show begins at 7 p.m. with a live audio and video presentation by Alyssa Vosganian, aka “The Button Pusher.”

Floating Music Experience SARATOGA SPRINGS — Accessible only by boat, the Saratoga Lake Association and Soul Session Edu-tainment, Inc. presents a community good will concert to take place Sunday, July 11 at 1:30 p.m. at Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs.

Solo and tandem kayak and paddleboat (SUPs) rentals are available through the Kayak Shak. Kayak areas will be marked off as well as boat pass-through lanes. Safety and social distancing protocols will be maintained.

Saratoga Hospital Gala Returns Aug. 4 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital’s 39th Annual Gala will be held Aug. 4 on the grounds of Saratoga Casino Hotel.

Presented by Julie & Co. Realty, LLC, and Bonacio Construction Inc., the fundraiser supports high-quality, affordable healthcare by benefiting the hospital’s Saratoga Community Health Center.

The Gala is one of the Capital Region’s largest, most successful charitable events. It is known far and wide for its enticing auction items and creative themes—this year “School Spirit.”

Summer 2021 Tang at Home Studios, July 18 – August 15 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College announces Tang at Home Studio series for the summer. These online art activities bring the Tang experience into participants’ homes every Sunday from July 18 to Aug. 15 starting at 11 a.m.

Tang at Home Studio gives kids and their families the chance to explore their creativity, make new things, and share their artwork with peers. Each online session lasts one hour and includes a guided exploration of an artwork, information about the artist, and a hands-on art project led by Sunny Ra, The Laurie M. Tisch Educator for K-12 and Community Programs, with assistance from Skidmore College student interns.

To ensure a fun sharing environment, registration is required.

The live Sunday sessions are best suited for kids ages 5-12 and their adult companions, but everyone is welcome.

Registration opens on the Tang website on the Monday before each Sunday session. Then

you can explore, learn, and prepare materials. On the Sunday from 11 a.m. – noon, we will gather on Zoom to discuss our ideas about the artwork, engage in an art-making activity, and share our creations. For the best experience, log in via computer instead of a mobile device, if possible.

This will enhance each participant’s ability to view artwork and videos, and to engage in conversations with one other.

How do I register?

Registration will be available through a link posted on the Tang website at tang.skidmore.edu on Monday for that week’s session.

The schedule begins July 18: Scrolled Stories, exploring artworks by Pakistani American artist Shahzia Sikander and discuss how she combines Indo-Persian manuscript painting with contemporary art practice in a wide range of forms including painting, drawing, animation, and installation. After looking at her works, we will create our own scroll-styled artwork that tells our own unique story.

The museum also has announced the return of inperson Family Saturdays. Each 90-minute session features a close-looking exercise at a work of art, an art-making activity, and a moment to share new creations. These multigenerational events are for children 5 and older with a parent, grandparent, or other guardian. Family Saturdays will run from July 17 through Aug. 14. There will be two sessions each week starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. with each session capped at five children with one adult each. Reservations are required. f you were raised here or have spent time in Saratoga during racing season, chances are that you know the jingle mentioned in the above title. The words have a special meaning to fans throughout the horse racing universe. Since its inception in 1863, Saratoga has strived to present “The finest racing in the world.”

The track has played host to a myriad of the greatest horses that ever graced the American Turf. Man O’ War, Secretariat, Buckpasser, Kelso, American Pharaoh and so many enormously talented thoroughbred champions have thrilled generations of fans who have made their way to this Mecca of Racing.

A once-in-a-lifetime earthshaking event, the onset of Covid-19, in effect derailed the entire sports world last year. Major League Baseball teams played their games in front of cardboard cutouts. Professional basketball and the NFL faced similar constraints. Horse racing was no exception to the new covid rules. There would be racing at Saratoga for wagering purposes only. The racing meet technically speaking took place at the Spa. Fans however would not be admitted to the track. As for its impact on the city, it may as well have been run on another continent.

Saratoga like so much of America was a ghost town. The

normally thriving hotels saw empty rooms and desolated parking lots. Restaurant owners were mostly relegated with to go orders. Despair and hopelessness became the norm.

Then American ingenuity took command of the situation.

It came in the way of a government-led coalition with pharmaceutical companies asked to do the impossible.

In less than a year a miracle took place. A highly effective vaccine was created. Within six months it had brought the dreaded Covid to its knees. The sporting world along with the rest of society’s norms are thriving again. Which means as the following subtitle suggests.

All ROADS LEAD TO SARATOGA The festivities are about to begin. Mark it on your calendar, Thursday, July 15, 2021. At 11 in the morning, the gates of the ancient racecourse will open again and the twoyear hiatus will be over. Saratoga is primed for a season to topple all prior records. If history has taught us anything, it does repeat itself. 1946 was the last time the track reopened to the public in the post World War Two era. Opening day the fans came out in droves to welcome back the Grand Dame of American racing. Over 15,000 fans converged on the grounds. It was in that timeframe a massive crowd attended a weekday racing card.

Changing times have made Saratoga more accessible with the advent of modern transportation, superior accommodations, and fabulous restaurants. This along with a city filled with wonders that have similarities to some of Europe’s great capitols has made Saratoga “The Summer Place To Be.” A walk down Broadway has the feel of the world’s greatest boulevard, the Champs Elysee. With it’s outdoor dining, the street musicians, and the huge crowds that are drawn here,

one can sense the experience of Paris on a warm summer night. Close by is one of Saratoga’s more beautiful settings.

Congress Park is a marvel of architecture and landscaping.

It has an uncanny resemblance to Rome’s fabulous public grounds, the Villa Borghese. A stroll through the park leads to Union Avenue. With its staid mansions and wide expanse, it is the perfect setting leading to the racetrack entrance.

Now it’s time for what Saratoga is famous for, horse racing on a grand scale. It’s opening day and the old stands will overflow with a crowd that is as diverse as the sporting world can offer. The paddock area will be filled with fans that enjoy the outdoor picnic tables. The clubhouse restaurants will be alive with those who appreciate a more traditional approach to a day at the races. The box seat area will play host to the dignitaries and hierarchy of the racing world. Here you can feel history. The great purveyors of the American Turf were at home here. The Whitneys, Vanderbilt and the Wideners once graced these same box seats during the glory years of the sport. The options don’t end there. Thousands of reserved seats are available for those who appreciate a fine view of the races in a relaxed atmosphere. Then there is the backbone of the racing game, the true horseplayer. He doesn’t care if he sits or stands. He’s not at the track for the food or the sightseeing.

He comes from cities and towns across the country to try his luck at the Spa. This is the guy that goes out after the races, win or lose, has a bite to eat and a couple of drinks.

He knows the score and won’t disappoint when it comes time to leave the tip.

Expect to see them all this coming Thursday. The thrills begin at 1 p.m. It is now post time. The massive crowd awaits. The tension builds. The bell rings. The starting gate opens. And they’re off at Saratoga...

2021 Stake Action in Saratoga

The 2021 racing season at Saratoga Race Course begins July 15.

Week 1 will contain 6 stakes races, 5 of them graded, including the Grade 1 Diana for fillies and mares and the historic Sanford for two-year-olds. Traditionally the first weekend of the season focuses on two-yearolds and older grass fillies and mares.

The Diana will highlight Saturday’s card. On the grass at a mile and one-eighth it offers a purse of $500,000. Trainer Chad Brown has won this race the last 5 years and is expected again to have numerous entries. The Diana typically showcases the top grass fillies and mares in the country. Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez has won the Diana a record 6 times, including 2 of the last 3.

This year the favorite in a small field could be Mean Mary a prolific grass winner trained by H. Graham Motion. Her main competition is expected to be Harvey’s Lil Goil a beautiful gray stakes winning daughter of American Pharoah trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado. The filly was hampered in her last start when she lost to Mean Mary by a yielding turf course and would prefer a firm course unsoftened by rain. Also running will be a powerful pair of runners from overseas - Althiqa and the aptly named Summer Romance coming off a 1-2 finish in Belmont’s recent Just a Game Stakes.

The Godolphin owned pair are trained by Charlie Appleby. The Chad Brown contingent will be led by Pocket Square who was fifth to the Godolphin pair in her previous race.

Saturday will also feature the Sanford which will be run at 6 furlongs. The Sanford, first run in 1913, has seen Triple Crown winners Secretariat and Affirmed rise to prominence through wins but is most remembered as the only race in which all-time great Man o’War was beaten. Man o’War’s loss to Upset in this race in 1919 helped establish Saratoga Race Course’s reputation as “The Graveyard of Champions”. Man o’War’s loss in the Sanford was his only loss in twenty one starts. In the 1913 Sanford Man o’War was unprepared for the start and then was the victim of a terrible ride by his jockey Johnny Loftus. That he almost won the race was actually enhanced his already formidable reputation.

This year’s Sanford is expected to be the second start for Mike Repole’s Wit. Wit was an impressive winner for trainer Todd Pletcher (who will be inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in August) in his first start on the Belmont under card overcoming a slow start to win going away.

Opening Day Thursday July 15 will feature two Grade III sprints – The Quick Call for three-yearolds on the grass at 5 ½ furlong and the Schuylerville for two-year-old fillies at 6 furlongs.

The Quick Call is named for a durable gelding who started 86 times and ran at Saratoga each year from 1986 – 1991. Quick Call’s victories included the Forego Handicap in 1988 and 1989, just missing a third consecutive win of the Forego in 1990—losing by a nose. Quick Call lived to the extended age of 35 and was honored by having his ashes buried on the Saratoga Race Course grounds at Clare Court a training track on the grounds. A quick competitive field is expected.

The Schuylerville is an opportunity for two-year-old fillies to gain the coveted stakes race “black type” which will enhance their broodmare prospects and value. Trainers Todd Pletcher and d. Wayne Lucas have each won the race 6 times. The Schuylerville is the traditional stakes race on opening day and like the Diana jockey John Velazquez has had the most wins by a rider with 5. Happy Soul, a daughter of Runhappy trained by former rider Wesley Ward is expected to be the favorite off her two recent wins at Belmont Park.

Friday’s stakes race is the Forbidden Apple at one mile on the grass. The race was not run last year and has only been run at Saratoga in 2019.

Sunday sees the fourth straight day of stakes action with the Coronation Cup on the grass at 5 ½ furlongs for three-year-old fillies.

Excitement and Optimism ON THE SPA BACKSTRETCH

a Year Later after the COVID-19 Pandemic

T

here are a couple of words that could describe the feeling and emotion around the Saratoga Racecourse backstretch as this year’s meet begins on July 15: excitement and optimism.

While last year’s meet was successful for many trainers and their staff, the COVID-19 pandemic stifled some of their excitement that would have been shared with fans and other people.

A year later, a lot of people around the backstretch are looking forward to the meet, especially since Saratoga Racecourse has been opened for training on the main track since April 17 with the Oklahoma Training Track starting almost a month later following its renovations.

“Of course, that’s what everyone wants – a sense of normalcy,” he said, “Obviously, there are going to be some wonderful horses coming up here. It should be a good meet. I hope everything goes smoothly. For the fans, they should see some wonderful racing. They always do.”

One of those trainers is Hall of Famer Nick Zito, who has been a fixture near the Oklahoma Training Track since the mid-1970s with notable horses that include Kentucky Derby winners Strike the Gold and Go for Gin, Belmont and Travers winner Birdstone, and two-time Whitney winner Commentator.

Some of the horses who are already on the Saratoga grounds include last year’s Alabama winner Swiss Skydiver, multiple Grade 1 stakes winner and last year’s Sword Dancer winner Channel Maker, and several of Chad Brown’s graded stakes winners.

“It is nice to see people smile again,” Ryan Bond said. “It seems like everyone has dropped their guard a little bit and shaking hands. I think everyone is happy it is at the back end of it.”

Carmouche to Cook for Principessa Elena Society Jockey Kendrick Carmouche is planning to cook his increasingly famous gumbo at the Principessa Elena Society at 13 Oak Street on Monday, July 19 for members and their guests to benefit the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

Carmouche is looking to resume riding at Saratoga after suffering a broken right ankle after Kentucky Pharoah unseated him coming out of the gate in the last race on Belmont Stakes Day. The cost is $25 per person and the event will run from 6-9 p.m. For more information, contact Fran LaBelle at 518-506-0705.

Bond Racing Team

Meanwhile, there are other trainers who are hoping to capitalize on last year’s success.

Jorge Abreu is one of those trainers after finishing 10th in the standings by winning 10-of-31 races with horses like Liveyourbeastlife, who won an allowance race before finishing second in the Jim Dandy Stakes, and Myhartblongstodady, winner of the Yaddo Stakes. Along with some of last year’s runners, Abreu has 45 2-year-olds who are currently training between Saratoga and Belmont.

“Last year, I had a great meet,” he said. “This year, it seems like my horses are even better, especially with my 2-year-olds. With the babies, when you start pressing on them, it will come down to how they react.”

Even though Abreu had a good Saratoga season, he had concerns about staying afloat as the pandemic forced a pause on New York racing last spring and going into the summer prior to the Saratoga meet.

“It was that bad,” he said. “Last summer, some of the owners took their horses back to the farm, which was the right thing to do. You are training horses for 4-6 months without knowing when racing will resume. We were pretty lucky to have a job and keep the racing going.”

With that part behind him, Abreu is also looking forward to seeing fans return to Saratoga for the 40-day season.

“We miss that action,” he said. “Having a grandstand that was empty wasn’t fun. I have been coming here since 1984. It has always been packed and crowded.”

The Bond Racing Team, with H. James “Jim” Bond as the trainer, is also hoping to come back for another strong Saratoga season following eighth-place tie in winning 12-of-40 races. Two horses that led the stable were Rinaldi, who won an allowance race before taking West Point Stakes, and Prioritize, also a winner of an allowance race who later finished third in the Woodward Handicap.

“We definitely had a successful meet last year,” said Ryan Bond, one of the Bond’s sons and assistant.

“Horses were just missing [to finish first] at Belmont.

They were very competitive in the spots. It was nice to get our noses down on a couple of those tight races.”

Though, Ryan Bond acknowledged that it was difficult to celebrate those wins without fans or some owners due to the pandemic.

“It was a little strange to have nobody to celebrate with it,” he said. “We couldn’t high-five owners. It was like a morning workout scenario, but with a little bit of cheering for your horse. You didn’t have anyone screaming along with you.”

The Bond family, who has a solid base in the Saratoga region with its Song Hill Thoroughbred Farm in Mechanicville, has seen the area become a little more relaxed and happy over the past couple of months.

Gearing Up for Opening Day

I

t is August 1946, the summer after WWII ended. The Saratoga Racetrack had been closed for three years because the war had imposed travel restrictions, which financially ruined the tourist industry. The historical fiction novel Lake Lonely published by Shires Press sits ever present at Northshire Bookstore in Downtown Saratoga Springs. The same town with the same setting within the book. A local author writing about her local town seems cliche but somehow it resonates loudly with heartfelt conviction, especially this year of 2021. With the onset of the pandemic months behind us, one would be remiss not to notice the historical significance of the impact that the parallel storyline has to the countdown of Opening Day at the Saratoga Racetrack this season. Many of us are counting the minutes to be able to walk onto the revered grounds.

The novella, Lake Lonely, is a timely gift to our beloved town in Upstate New York which takes place the weekend prior to the track reopening. The tourists and natives are abuzz with ex citement, ready for the country’s pivotal resurgence.

Saratoga Springs finds itself again at the doorway of the opening of our treasured racetrack. We are at a precipice, coming off an abrupt descent from the pandemic months and in hopeful mode on an upswing socially, economically and emotionally. We are a hometown that embodies all the joy feels a vacationland brings. We are drawn to the air of excitement, the tingles, the litany of gathering. We basically worship our beloved track. With that said, what better time to celebrate with a meaningful book experience!

This historical fiction novella started out being a love letter to this beloved destination city. But recently with the

pandemic, it has become more significant. We have all gone back to cherishing the simple things. This has stirred up the universal theme of human connection, just like post WWII, the time period of the book. The story within the book is a journey piece. It takes you on an adventure, meandering through the streets and the places of this historical town. The adventure is one of a search for connection resulting from the lonely isolation caused by the war years and significantly relevant to today. A son and his working-class mother. A nephew and his cantankerous uncle are merging from the isolation. Trying to hold on to the familiar and trying to make sense of the disconnect that had endured. It touches on themes of the American immigrant success story and women entering the work force during that time period. The language, music, film and pop culture references are weaved throughout to create an atmospheric, concise story with a hint of humor. Do not miss the existential soliloquy by the main character within the story.

The Everyman, Nicky B. The 25-year-old main character is relatable as he navigates his way. While yearning for success, he combines moral idealism and fortitude with his ineptitude of trying to get out of his own way. This results in a hilarious romp as the reader views him escalating his own troubles and the laugh out loud moments ensue. His big hearted, cranky Uncle Sallie and his hard working, keen sensed mother Mae, are the ever-present bookends that keep him standing up. That is, when he half listens to their advice without typically shrugging it off.

There are several literary devices used throughout this historical novel. Local book clubs have made this one of their choices for literary discussions. Although the

setting is intended to be Saratoga Springs it contains the universal themes of immigration and the effects of the war which lends itself additionally to read for family history discussions. The book also is the perfect read to take to the Victoria Pool or by one of the local lakes. It is a heartwarming escape that will capture you from the first page. If you are gearing up for “Opening Day,” be sure to grab your copy at Northshire Bookstore on Broadway before they sell out. An added bonus, for those who love design is the beautifully rendered artistic cover that will be a focal point on any coffee table. The pages within also contain photographs from that time period in homage to Saratoga Springs courtesy of the Saratoga Springs History Museum. The need of supporting these historic institutions is especially of utmost importance during this time. Be sure to reach out to all of the cities treasured institutions and support them financially even with small donations.

Go to muse- ums. Attend music concerts. Buy a book at independent bookstores. The intention of Lake Lonely was to bring to light some of the stories older generations have told us through the years. It is a small story with a big heart.

Preservation in all forms is key. Go find your connection.

Go find your joy. And most importantly, be grateful for the moments. Happy Opening Day to all!

The women were all in ragout mode, dressed to the nines. It was a super duper day to be seen in your fashion finery. The men went all out, too.

Dapper Dans with hats on their heads and cigars dangling from their mouths.

Patrons carried the local newspaper, The Saratogian with the headline in bold letters announcing, “Crowds Jam City For Return of Racing,” and The New York Post touting the small bettors with their lead story, “TwoBuckers Crowd Spa.” It was a glorious day of all kinds of bettors with a boodle of cash in their pockets parading in, returning after a three year hiatus due to WWII rationing and closures.

The town had been in a holding pattern for those three summers and felt the economic loss along with the loss of spirit. Summer Saratoga gatherings were based around this ritual. With its closure, it left a gaping black hole in the social gathering pot. The gear up to August had lost its momentum until this reopening. The light revelry had descended upon the day and the excitement was contagious. Five thousand people stood in line early to get in for the eight race card that started at 2:30pm on this Monday to enjoy a full afternoon of horsey happenings.

Fun was on everyone’s mind with a unified conviction, looking to take part in this celebration that brought in more than fifteen thousand people on the track grounds. Opening day was back to stay. The people needed

this summer venue because it was a ritual that was etched into their souls.

Without it, they didn’t feel the same.

They felt out of sorts. The magic was missing. Not to mention the economic impact it had. There was no doubt that it felt normal to be back again together at this unified gathering.

In the New York Herald Tribune, it stated that “There are bigger racetracks than Saratoga, but there is none like it.” This was no more apparent just by watching the way the track goers were rushing in to get to their favorite spots.

The birds in the elm trees surrounding the paddock also seemed to be singing a tune of celebration. Mae and Sallie were hanging by the Clubhouse entrance as Jimmy Jazz strolled in after handing over his $1.60 admission fee and said to Mae, “Look at you, pure aces today!” Sal and Jimmy hugged it out. Their deep friendship bond seeping out between them, then stepped back and did the fist on top to bottom handshake. Jimmy with his warm grin said, “Flip the grip, my main man.” Mae screeched out in sarcasm, “You two bums, let’s get over to The Jim Dandy Bar before it gets crowded.

I need to get my spot front and center at the bar before all those hussies try to make their moves on both you guys.” They began walking up the path leading into the Clubhouse, Mae in the middle with her arms entrenched in both mens arms. She looked at each of them out of the corner of her eyes and thought to herself, “I am one lucky lady!” but deep in her mind all she was thinking about was her son’s whereabouts.

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced a series of new and returning attractions, entertainment and events for the 2021 season at Saratoga Race Course, which begins Thursday, July 15 and continues through Monday, Sept. 6.

at the Whispering Angel Rosé display near the Travers Bar, presented by Moët Hennessy. All fans 21 years of age and older will enjoy complimentary samples of Chateau d’Esclans Whispering Angel Rosé, while supplies last.

Gates open at 11 a.m. each day, including weekends, with the exception of Runhappy Travers Day, Saturday, August 28. Post time for the first race on Opening Day is 1:05 p.m.

The 2021 Saratoga summer meet will include the following events and happenings:

EVERY SUNDAY BEGINNING JULY 18 Berkshire Bank Family Sundays will feature a wide variety of free family-friendly activities, games, attractions and educational activities each Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Berkshire Bank Family Fun Zone.

Berkshire Bank Family Sundays are supplemented by the nearby Berkshire Bank Family Zone, a smoke- and alcohol-free interactive play area for children. THE WHITNEY VIEWING STAND The Whitney Viewing Stand is located at the Oklahoma Training Track across the street from Saratoga Race Course. It allows everyone to experience a bird’s-eye view of the horses’ morning training sessions and workouts.

This gorgeous landmark was dedicated to the Whitneys - one of thoroughbred racing’s most dedicated and philanthropic families - in 2013 during the Saratoga 150 Celebration.

Modeled after the 1892 Judges Stand at the Saratoga Race Course, the Whitney Viewing Stand seeks to keep the rich history of Saratoga alive by combining the new with the old.

The Oklahoma Training Track is located across the street from the main Saratoga Race Course track. The easiest way to access the Whitney Viewing Stand is via Gate 21 on East Avenue.

Horse Trainer Gary Contessa Donates Surprise Item to David Cassidy Auction MASSAPEQUA — David Cassidy memorabilia, including a surprise, one-of-a-kind item donated by horse trainer Gary Contessa, will be auctioned off only on ithinkiloveyou.org starting Friday, July 9 at 7 p.m. through 10 p.m. on July 16.

The I Think I Love You Animal Foundation®, Inc. will hold its first world-wide online event, on Facebook: “David Cassidy: Then & Now” starting on Friday, July 9 at 7 p.m. Special guests include David’s friends from the “Then” years – award-winning R&R photographer Henry Diltz and life-long friend Sam Hyman. Representing the “Now” or more recent years, is David’s friend and American horse trainer Gary Contessa. Rick Segall, who played young, raven-haired Ricky, the four-year-old Partridge Family neighbor who sang with the group in season four, will host the online event.

Primary photographer during both the Partridge Family era and Cassidy’s ‘70’s solo career, Henry Diltz of Henry Diltz Photography and Morrison Hotel Gallery, has generously granted the use of rare photos of David Cassidy with animals from his extensive vintage catalog to I Think I Love You Animal Foundation®. Many of the photos were taken during David Cassidy’s domestic and world tours from the ‘70’s and while he starred on The Partridge Family television series, which aired on ABC from 1970 – 1974 and not made available since the ‘70s. (NYRA) will invite racing fans to continue a summer tradition during Breakfast at Saratoga, driven by the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA).

Breakfast at Saratoga welcomes guests to enjoy a morning meal on The Porch of the Clubhouse at Saratoga Race Course while the thoroughbreds train on the main track. Breakfast is held daily from 7 to 9:30 a.m. and is available on a first-come, first-served basis; reservations are not accepted. Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Open to the Public SARATOGA SPRINGS — The National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 6 at Fasig-Tipton, will be open to the public and free to attend. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will also be streamed live on the Museum’s website at racingmuseum.org.

Public seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors will be open at 9:30 a.m. This year’s induction ceremony will honor the Hall of Fame classes of 2020 and 2021. Legendary track announcer Tom Durkin will serve as the master of ceremonies. The 2020 inductees include racehorses Tom Bowling

and Wise Dan: jockey Darrel McHargue; trainer Mark Casse; and Pillars of the Turf Alice Headley Chandler, J. Keene Daingerfield, Jr., and George D. Widener, Jr. The 2021 class is comprised of racehorse American Pharoah (a 2013 FasigTipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale graduate) and trainers Jack Fisher and Todd Pletcher.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS HIGHLIGHT SUMMER SEASON AT NATIONAL MUSEUM OF RACING AND HALL OF FAME SARATOGA SPRINGS — The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will feature several new and returning special exhibitions this summer for the upcoming Saratoga racing season.

All summer exhibitions debuted on Thursday, July 1.

NEW EXHIBITIONS • Muybridge and Motion: Selections from the Tang Teaching Museum Collection This exhibition features a series of groundbreaking animal locomotion photographic studies by English photographer Eadweard Muybridge (1830 – 1904) from the Tang Teaching Museum collection and paintings

by American artist Henry Stull (1851 – 1913) from the National Museum of Racing collection.

Exhibited together, these works from two separate museum collections illustrate how the technological advancements in photography made by Muybridge forever changed the way motion is depicted and understood, particularly in the field of equine art.

Muybridge and Motion is part of All Together Now, a regional collection-sharing project organized by The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation. For the duration of this exhibition, the Museum will offer complimentary admission to any visitor with a Skidmore College ID. • ’Chasing Summer: The Art of Steeplechase.

This year’s fine art exhibition celebrates the Steeplechase Hall of Fame induction year with

31 works of steeplechasing art

by British and American sporting artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. ’Chasing Summer also celebrates the return of 13 works from the collection that were previously on loan and have not been exhibited at the Museum in decades. Artists represented in this exhibition include Henry Alken, Samuel Henry Alken, Ann Collins, W. Smithson Broadhead, Paul Brown, June Harrah, Sir Alfred J. Munnings, Frederic Remington, Henry Stull, Franklin Brooke Voss, Eleanor Iselin Wade, and Charles Morris Young, among others.

NEW EXHIBIT UPDATES AND ONGOING EXHIBITIONS The Triple Crown Gallery features text panels and artifacts related to Triple Crown history and an interactive exhibit that allows visitors to learn about the 13 Triple Crown winners through historic race footage and photographs. Renovated in recent years to include America’s 12th Triple Crown winner and 2021 Hall of Fame inductee, American Pharoah, additional gallery updates were added in 2019 to honor the most recent Triple Crown winner, Justify. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Assault’s Triple Crown sweep of 1946. In honor of this milestone anniversary year, artifacts on loan from King Ranch Archives — including race-worn silks and photographs — will be featured in this gallery through 2022.

The Edward P. Evans Gallery allows the Museum to showcase more of the treasures from its

diverse permanent collection and honor the legacy of Mr. Evans and his passion for the sport of thoroughbred racing. Current featured exhibits include: Selections from the Edward P. Evans Trophy Collection, The Triple Crown, Selections from the James E. “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons Collection, The Legacy of Man o’ War, The Grand National, Tiffany & Co. in the National Museum of Racing Collection, and A Salute to Hollywood Park.

New for 2021, Fifty Years Ago, an exhibit highlighting the racing achievements of 1971 and showcasing trophies won by Hall of Fame horses Shuvee and Riva Ridge and Eclipse Awards won

by Hall of Fame trainer Charlie Whittingham and Hall of Fame Pillar of the Turf Paul Mellon.

Women in Racing: Women have been involved in the sport of thoroughbred racing in America for more than 100 years. The pioneers and trailblazers of the past paved the way for future generations of horse lovers and racing enthusiasts, allowing them to continue to break boundaries in a male-dominated sport and industry. Featuring art, photographs, and multimedia from the Museum Collection and on loan, this special exhibition honors the women involved in every aspect of thoroughbred racing.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Join the Saratoga Hospital Foundation and explore the beauty of the Adirondacks through the Above & Beyond Challenge, presented by Pacira BioSciences, Inc. The Above & Beyond Challenge is a summer-long hiking program that invites individuals and businesses to raise funds in support of the Addiction Medicine Program at the Saratoga Community Health Center.

Teams can come in all sizes and members can be of all different skill levels – it only takes two people to get started. Sponsor tiers are based on team size, and all funds generated go to the Addiction Medicine Program. Individual cost is $150.00, and sponsor tiers range from $250.00 for a team of 2 to $5,000.00 for a team of 20. Registration is continuous

from June to September of this year, allowing hikers to pick their own date and hike at their convenience. Challenge organizers encourage that you hike one of the Adirondack 46er, Lake George 12ster, or Saranac 6er peaks in the Adirondacks, but want hikers to ultimately pick a peak they have previously hiked and/or familiar with the terrain.

“The beauty of it is that they can pick any day, time, and peak,” said Laura Greenaway, Manager of Special Events for the Saratoga Hospital Foundation. “It is an independent initiative.”

The Challenge wants participants to go social as well. Hikers will be fitted with an Above & Beyond shirt and teams will receive a banner to take a picture with at the summit. Group pictures should be shared to Facebook and Instagram using #aboveandbeyond2021, and the Saratoga Hospital Foundation will repost.

“There is strong, researchbased evidence that correlates hiking or other outdoor activity with more successful addiction program outcomes,” states the Mission of the Addiction Medicine Program.

Established in 2018 by former Adirondack Trust President and CEO, Stephan von Schenk, the Challenge has raised $153,000 to date. Joining as an individual promotes the healthy body, healthy

mind mission just as much, but joining as team can promote employee health, camaraderie, and more. The Challenge’s webpage states that simply put it is “a team building experience with a mission that impacts the local community.”

Launched in March of 2017, the Addiction Medicine Program is now fully integrated in the Saratoga Community Health Center. With its collaborative physical and mental approach to

health, the impact of the program in 2020 was serving over 604 new patients through over 5,700 visits – no patient is turned away.

“Addiction medicine is growing, especially with the pandemic we all went through,” said Greenaway. “The Challenge is a great way to help support the program.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 15th annual Firecracker 4 Road Race was this past weekend on Sunday, July 4, 2021. Over 2,000 runners competed in the 4-mile road race, and 700 runners competed virtually.

“With only 30 days preparation the 15th annual Firecracker 4 Road Race was reestablished, organized, marketed, and permitted,” said Peter C. Goutos, Race Director. “This could not have occurred without the support of our community leaders, very responsive sponsors, and the exceptional neighbors who were

in our streets to welcome the runners back to Saratoga Springs.”

Top male finisher, and overall winner, was Shea Weilbaker, 20, of Saratoga Springs, with a time of 19:14. Top female finisher was Cara Sherman, 24, from Ballston Spa, with a time of 22:01.

Race organizers want to give special thanks to the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, Discover Saratoga, and the Saratoga Springs City Center for sponsoring and promoting the event.

And, this year’s race compared favorably to previous years, considering the sudden lift of COVID restrictions and the limited time to plan – the largest Firecracker had over 3,000 participants and the first Firecracker had only 157 runners.

Planning has already begun for the 16th annual Firecracker 4, and as Goutos said, “the Firecracker is a very welcoming road race in a city that is truly a recreational destination.”
