BASEBALL SCC v. Cambridge Saratoga Central Catholic swept Cambridge in a double-header on Thursday, May 27. An early 9-0 lead in game one seemed to foreshadow how the games would go for the Saints, winning game one 10-4 and game two 21-4.

At the plate, SCC senior Ryan McCaroll went 3 for 3 in game one and 4 for 4 in game two. McCaroll recorded four singles, two doubles, a triple, and six RBIs between both games.

On April 18, 1777, the New York Provincial Convention received the following letter, dated two days previously: “Dear Sir – Upon my arrival home , I found a letter from the chairman of the county committee, requesting the assistance of our militia to quell an insurrection of the tories in Ballstown, and upon inquiry found that the same spirit prevailed much in my regiment, to such a degree that it appears numbers have enlisted, and have taken the oath of secrecy and allegiance to the King of Great Britain, and that a regiment of royal volunteers is to be raised in the county of Albany, under the command of J. Hueston, as will appear by the enclosed; in consequence of which we have not complied with the request of the chairman.

Seventeen of the villains are now in confinement, and by the vigilance of our committee, and militia officers, hope soon to detect the whole and transmit to the Convention the proof that shall be collected.

I am, dear sir, in great haste, Yours, (signed) Robt. Van Rensselaer” The Provincial Convention was the de facto Government of the Province of New York and Robert Van Rensselaer was Colonel of the 8th Regiment of the Militia of Albany County. Although trimmed and its borders optimized in 1772 with the creation of Tryon and Charlotte counties, Albany County was vast, including what are now Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties, large parts of Greene and Washington counties, and the disputed southwest corner of Vermont. The Town of Ballston at the time extended northward to the Hudson River in future Saratoga County.

In his letter, Col. Van Rensselaer, seems to have conflated two related but separate Loyalist (Tory) activities. One was the enlistment of loyalist regiments by James Hueston of Lunenberg, Albany County (now renamed Athens in Greene County).

The other was a movement of about forty armed Loyalists under the leadership of brothers William and Thomas Frazer of Ballstown.

The Provincial Convention took immediate action in response to this doubly alarming intelligence (loyalists organizing and the County Militia being of doubtful allegiance). First, the terms of enlistment for the battalion of Hueston’s loyalist volunteers, together with copies of the oaths

taken by them, was reviewed.

Second, this information was sent to the commander of the Albany militia, requesting him to immediately convene a court martial for the trial of the offenders. Third, the committee of the county of Albany was instructed to assist the militia in apprehending suspects and collecting probative evidence.

James Hueston was apprehended, tried by court martial at Albany on June 14, 1777, found guilty and sentenced to be hanged. This sentence was confirmed by the Provincial Council of Safety (sitting during the adjournment of the Convention) on June 18, 1777. Brig. General Abraham Ten Broek was ordered to have the sentence carried out.

(Whether the sentence was subsequently commuted, as was common, history seems not to divulge.)

The case of the Frazer brothers and their armed band ended rather differently. On or about May 1, 1777, they had been seen moving around in the woods and on the trails near Ballstown, but were spooked by news of the impending arrival of Patriot militia. The latter force comprised detachments from the 12th Albany County militia and Captain Coggsdel’s company of “Continental Troops,” neither apparently beset by doubtful loyalties, under the command of local officers, Lt. Colonel James Gordon and the ferociously named Captain Tyrranus Collins.

They had been requested to investigate by Hezekiah Middlebrook of the Ballstown committee.

The Frazers and their men concluded that they should make a break for the safety of British Forces located at Crown Point on Lake Champlain. Using a Native American trail, the group marched north, camping near a lake in the nearby mountains which they named Lake Desolation. But they only reached Lake Luzerne before they were apprehended by the troops led by Gordon and Collins.

The Frazers were tried by court martial at Albany on May 24 and May 28, 1777, were convicted of levying war against New York and sentenced to 12 months in prison.

Of the remaining 38 members of the loyalist group, only 17 were tried by court martial at Albany on May 30, 1777. Eleven of these men were from Ballstown – Thomas Verte, Joseph Shearer, Alexander McLaughlin, John Mickle, John Fairman, Archibald McNeill, John Summerville, James Grant, John Burns, Michael Connor and John McLaughlin. They were convicted but sentenced to each pay a 15-dollar fine, after which payment they would be released. But the Frazers and their men, supposedly with the help of William’s wife, were able to escape from jail at Albany before any fines were paid and subsequently decamped to the advancing forces of Burgoyne at Fort Edward.

Thus ended the “Insurrection of 1777” in the town of Ballstown, with the action in this area moving on to a much more significant turning point at the Battle of Saratoga.

In 2014, I launched an initiative in public libraires across the Capital District (Mohawk Valley and Central NY too) to promote financial planning, and my Social Security informational program was very successful. They had to stop due to COVID, and I have just started scheduling programs again for the fall.

The educational programs seen on our website are available, no cost, to groups, organizations, and businesses. I believe in financial education and literacy, and that is where my company differs from others.

A. A Bachelor of Arts in Business or Finance, and various industry licensing along with credentials.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Tickets are on sale now for the 26th annual Soroptimist Secret Gardens Tour set for Sunday, July 11. The tour features a dozen unique gardens in Saratoga Springs (including three on one street), Ballston Spa, and Schuylerville.

Visitors will find a wide variety of designs and plantings for both shade and sun. Some include water features, and others offer landscapes that incorporate oneof-a-kind mosaics and sculptures in both stone and metal. POLICE Paul J Bush, 30, of Green Island, was charged May 20 in Saratoga Springs with two felony counts criminal sale of a controlled substance, and two felony counts criminal possession of a controlled substance. Bush is accused of selling heroin mixed with fentanyl on two different occasions. Erica Luce, 31, of Ballston Spa, was charged May 19 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and a suspended registration.

Aaron Knaggs, 41, of Schenectady, was charged May 21 in Saratoga Springs with unlawful dissemination or publication of an intimate image, a misdemeanor.

Adrienne Parker, 32, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 21 with acting in a manner to injure a child.

Nicholas Snopkowski, 35, of Clifton Park, was charged May 22 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and driving a vehicle without signal devices/ reflectors.

Kevin Pimental, 34, of Castletonon-Hudson, was charged May 22 in Saratoga Springs with criminal contempt in the second-degree, a misdemeanor.

Siahr Siddiqi, 32, of Schenectady, was charged May 23 in Saratoga Springs with assault in the third-degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth-degree.

Hayley Linehan, 27, of South Glens Falls, was charged May 23 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.

Joseph A. Manasseri, 34, of Milton, was charged May 24 for promotion of a sexual performance by a child, and possession of a sexual performance by a child. Both charges are felonies. Manasseri is accused of possessing and promoting images consistent with child sexual exploitation via the internet, according to state police. He was arraigned in Malta Town Court and sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash/$30,000 bond.

Stephen R. Frank, 44, of South Glens Falls, was charged May 24 in Moreau with charged with strangulation in the second-degree - a felony, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child – a misdemeanor, and DWI. Frank is accused of applying pressure to the throat of another person with the intent to impede the normal breathing or blood circulation of that person - an act allegedly that occurred in the presence of two children.

While attempting to locate Frank at his residence, he is accused of arriving at that location operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated condition, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office.

Kenneth Curley, 36, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 18 with misdemeanor DWI, refusal breath test, speeding, and failure to keep right.

Robert Southard, 26, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 19 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating an unregistered vehicle, and license restriction violation.

Michael Redd, 19, of Malta, was charged May 14 in Saratoga Springs with criminal contempt.

George Miller, 44, of Utica, was charged May 14 in Saratoga Springs with petit larceny.

Adam Burger, 39, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 14 with assault, and acting in manner injure child.

David Hagen, 46, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 14 with criminal trespass in the second-degree, a misdemeanor.

Andrew Meade, 36, of Ballston Spa, was charged May 14 in Saratoga Springs with disorderly conduct: fight/ violent behavior.

Erin Haegele, 34, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 14 with acting in manner injure child.

Steven Maronic, 70, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 15 with criminal trespass in the third-degree, a misdemeanor.

On May 24, the New York State Police in Wilton participated in a Border-to-Border initiative. This four-hour traffic initiative aims at coordinating multiple law enforcement agencies to conduct highly visible seat belt enforcement and encourages drivers

and passengers to buckle up. State police, along with our law enforcement partners at Vermont State Police, Washington County Sheriff ’s Office (NY), Rutland County Sheriff ’s Office (VT), Granville Police Department (NY), Fair Haven Police Department (VT), and Castleton Police Department (VT), conducted enforcement of seatbelt and child restraint laws along the New York-Vermont border in Washington County. During the detail, 72 total citations were issued, 10 were for seatbelt violations.

t’s no surprise that the pandemic led to American families taking up new hobbies to stay busy while remaining socially-isolated.

Local hobby shop owners are experts when it comes to hobbies that are here to stay. Radio-controlled cars, trucks, drones, helicopters, and boats deliver exciting, high-performance action in cutting-edge designs that continue to capture the imagination long after other things have lost their luster.

PUTTING THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS Radio-controlled vehicles speed up the fun factor in your family’s free-time.

“There are certain things you can take everywhere. We have a really good trail system around here and you can go to the lakes with the boats. There’s just a lot you can do with them,” said Chris Taylor.

His dad, Ken Taylor, opened Racing City Hobbies, selling radio-controlled vehicles, models and parts, 31 years ago. Father and son bonded over the activity, learning how to work on them and travelling together to races.

When Ken died three years ago, Chris took over the store, refreshing the stock and expanding its indoor track.

“It’s a really good raceway- it’s really fun and you see a lot of good action,” said Chris.

The 70 x 36 ft raceway has a 135ft run line. It’s open for racing during the store’s regular business hours. A racing league meets there from September through April. Entries to race were approximately 50 per day, pre-pandemic, a number that has dropped to approximately half of that since (as people instead opted to stay home, building courses and jumps in their own backyards).

MAKE IT YOUR OWN In addition to their versatility, radio-controlled nitro and electric power vehicles, which come fully-assembled, are also almost infinitely modifiable.

“There’s a lot you can do with customization, a lot of hands-on building and taking things apart with this hobby,” said Chris.

While buying online becomes a bigger and bigger business daily, it doesn’t hold up to Racing City Hobbies’ knowledge and ability to get you what you want faster.

“We’ve been in business for a long time and we have a great reputation, so we’re a high priority for manufacturers when it comes to getting new things and parts,” he said.

There’s also a huge community, online manuals, and YouTube videos to give you even more tips and ideas.

“A lot easier to work on them than people might think. It’s really just nuts and bolts stuff – it’s really simple,” said Chris.

Ballston Spa Honors Veterans BALLSTON SPA — In recognition of Memorial Day, the Village of Ballston Spa unveiled banners honoring local veterans.

Hung throughout the shopping district, these large format banners display pictures of the men and women from Ballston Spa who served our country.

“As the son of two veterans this was a very personally rewarding project for me,” says Mark Blech the organizer of the program, “I love this community and wanted to share my admiration for those who served this country. My father always said he was the most proud of two accomplishments in his life: his family and his services to this country during the Korean War.” 66 Veterans are honored on the banners. But the banners are dedicated to all the men and women who served in the military.

Working with the VFW and American Legion and soliciting pictures from the community Blech created the banners with guidance from Mayor Larry Woolbright who supervised the program.

The Veteran Banners have become a sensation in the community, family members can be seen walking through the village looking for their relatives.

Veterans are excited to see their pictures honored on the banners.

2021 Capital Region Heart Walk and Run: Sunday, June 6

CAPITAL REGION — Nine-year-old Aedan Conway of Delmar is the Heart Hero of the 2021 Capital Region Heart Walk and Run on Sunday, June 6. Aedan was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and has had three open heart surgeries. He skis, plays baseball, and is working on his golf game. The 2021 Capital Region Heart Walk and Run is a digital experience, which simply means that people can register at CapitalRegionHeartWalk.org, form a team, fundraise, then walk or run wherever they are on June 6. The Capital Region Heart Walk and Run helps the American Heart Association fund research and education to fight heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers.

Federal Rent Relief Program for Saratoga Residents Negatively Impacted by COVID-19 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The U.S. Department of the Treasury established the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) to assist struggling families who have been financially impacted by COVID. The New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance (OTDA) received $2.4 billion in aid of which $6.8 million was allocated to provide relief for Saratoga County tenants. The rental subsidy is paid directly to landlords for eligible applicants.

Shelters of Saratoga (SOS) in conjunction with Saratoga County Department of Social Services is offering outreach and application assistance for the program to support Saratoga County tenants who are behind on rent due to COVID19. The program may cover up to 12 months of past-due rent, three

months of future rent, and utility assistance for eligible tenants.

To qualify for assistance, households must meet the criteria as established by OTDA. For the period beginning March 13, 2020, an eligible household member's income must not exceed 80% of Saratoga County area median income, at least one household member experienced a job loss or reduced income due to COVID19, and overdue rent is owed at the applicant's primary residence.

Tenants can apply directly to the New York State Emergency Rental Assistance Program portal at otda. ny.gov/programs/emergency-rentalassistance/#overview Assistance with the application process is also available by contacting Shelters of Saratoga at sheltersofsaratoga.org or by calling SOS’s ERAP Helpline at 518-602-3004.

Stewart’s Shops Celebrates Reopening with Sweet Return to Normal Ice Cream SARATOGA SPRINGS - As restrictions ease up and COVID19 infection numbers decline, Stewart’s Shops is celebrating the transition with a dedicated ice cream flavor suitably named ‘Sweet Return to Normal.’

Sweet Return to Normal will be available at the cone counter.

The vanilla flavor features chewy brownie bites, soft cookie dough pieces, and a rich fudge swirl and

will be available at all Stewart’s Shops for a limited time.

“I think we can all agree, Covid-19 has taken a toll on everyone in some way. As we carefully reopen, summer plans now include more travel, events and of course - ice cream. We all crave a return to normal, and this ice cream flavor is dedicated to just that,” Stewart’s Shops President Gary Dake said, in a statement.

Drive-Thru Food Drive at Vanderbilt Avenue Recreation Center June 7- 8 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Mayor’s Office will host a drivethru food drive at the Vanderbilt Avenue Recreation Center June 7-8, in partnership with students from the Saratoga Springs High School Saratoga Pathways Academy (SPA) program.

The food drive will benefit the Saratoga Nutrition Assistance for Children Program, more commonly known as SNACpack. Many of the children who benefit from SNACpack receive free breakfasts and lunches through their schools on weekdays, but may not have guaranteed access to food over the weekends. The program provides food items that children are able to prepare themselves, in case their parents are absent or unable

to make meals for them.

The Recreation Center is located at 15 Vanderbilt Ave. Food drive hours: 3- 6:30 p.m.

Monday, June 7, and 9 a.m. – noon, Tuesday, June 8.

Visitors should enter the Rec Center parking lot from Vanderbilt Ave, and stop in the traffic circle near the back entrance. They may then exit their vehicle (wearing a face mask), and place their donation in an available cart. A staff member from the Mayor’s Office will then transport the donation inside.

Needed items include: cereal, oatmeal packets, graham crackers, granola bars, mac & cheese, peanut butter & jelly, tuna, soup, juice boxes, canned veggies, popcorn, crackers.

Assemblywoman Woerner Advances Legislation Expanding Access to Broadband in Rural Areas ALBANY — Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner and Sen. Michelle Hinchey this week announced legislation addressing efficiency and cost barriers facing broadband service providers seeking to build out infrastructure in rural and underserved areas of New York State.

One provision would streamline the contract process for these build-outs and a second would more fairly distribute installation costs between broadband service providers and utility companies.

When broadband service providers seek to install internet service on a utility pole, they must obtain contracts to use space on each pole they intend to use. The bill amends the Public Service Law to include all utility poles in a given city, town, or village under one contract, creating a more efficient system for broadband service providers to complete the installation process. This change would increase the likelihood that broadband providers will service more areas of the state and ensure that all homes within a municipality receive the same level of service.

The Hinchey/Woerner bill also updates cost distribution dynamics between utility pole owners and broadband service providers. Pole owners regularly delay the replacement of aging utility poles and will condition access to the pole on the broadband service provider agreeing to pay all costs associated with replacing it. This practice can greatly increase the cost of deploying the necessary broadband infrastructure to underserved parts of the state, disincentivizing such investment overall in these areas.

This legislation prohibits this practice by pole owners and makes it so that whoever is requesting space on a utility pole will only be liable for a small portion of the cost if a new pole needs to be installed.

“If we have learned anything in the past year, it is the extent to which we require a reliable internet connection to function in the world. This is one step to assure that residents of rural communities have access to the technology that most of the rest of the state takes for granted,” said Woerner, in a prepared statement.

The Town and The City: Candidates Step Forward for Political Races SARATOGA SPRINGS — Skidmore business professor Minita Sanghvi this week officially announced her candidacy for the position of Saratoga Springs’ Commissioner of Finance on the Democrat line. The seat is one of five council positions and two supervisor seats up for election in November in the city of Saratoga Springs.

Sanghvi is a tenured business professor at Skidmore and has made Saratoga Springs home for her and her family since 2014.

She currently sits on the Saratoga Springs Public Library board of

trustees as its Finance Officer. She served on the city’s Charter Review Commissioner and is a founding member of the Saratoga Springs Human Rights Task Force.

She holds an accounting degree as well as an MBA and PhD and has worked for Leo Burnett, one of the world’s largest ad agencies, CARQUEST and Wal-Mart.

Among Sanghvi’s other initiatives for the Finance Office are: Creating new tourism opportunities and boosting the arts community to create a more vibrant downtown; Encouraging

the establishment of women and minority-owned businesses in the city; Supporting diverse voices in Saratoga Springs.

Also this week: the Town of Milton Democratic Committee announced they have nominated and endorsed candidates for the fall 2021 town elections. The Democratic nominating caucus was held on May 27 in the Village of Ballston Spa. Incumbent Supervisor Benny Zlotnick and Council-hopeful Meg Stevens were nominated to appear on the Democratic line in the electoral contest.

The Gay Rights Pioneer Who Grew Up in Saratoga Springs

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On June 1, city of Saratoga Springs Mayor Meg Kelly proclaimed June as Saratoga Pride Month.

In a separate action, made possible through a combination of private donations and support from the city, a rainbow-colored crosswalk was painted on Spring Street, between the Congress Park Carousel and the Hawthorne Spring to symbolize Saratoga’s open and welcoming environment and ongoing support for the LGBTQ+ community.

“I’m glad to hear that, because it was an uphill battle,” says Rev. Magora Kennedy, thinking back to her mid-20th century upbringing in a home on Henry Street in Saratoga Springs. “Today the library is on the spot where our house used to be,” she says.

Kennedy’s mother, who worked for General Electric, was Native American and traces her tribe back to the historically illustrated days of High Rock Park when natives introduced early settlers to the springs, several centuries ago. Her father, who hailed from St. Thomas, was a jockey who participated in races in England, but found his career short-circuited in America when African Americans were excluded from

riding as horse racing became a major attraction for mainstream America after World War I. “Coming to the United States, he was not able to ride, because of racism,” Kennedy says. “Being raised in Saratoga with a native American mother and a Caribbean father there was…well, we had a lot of push-back.” In the early 1950s as a teenager, when news started spreading around town that young Magora was gay, her mother offered her a choice: Get married to a man or get institutionalized in an upstate mental hospital.

Asked whether there were any support systems available to her at the time, she says: “Back in those days? No. I was given a choice to either be married or to be sent to Utica (presumably to be ‘cured’).

Unfortunately, that was happening to a lot of us who were gay. So, a lot of my friends went into convent, and a lot of the fellas went into the priesthood or into the service to get away from home.” Magora, who was 14 years old at the time, chose to get married.

The 1960s brought with it an era of activism for Rev. Kennedy.

Being black, lesbian and a woman of the church, her activism would take place on a multitude of stages.

“I was very much involved in the Women’s Rights Movement and working with Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug and Flo Kennedy. In those

days there were a lot of demonstrations, so we traveled around quite a bit,” she says. “I was also involved in the Civil Rights Movement. We had training to go down south to help black people to register to vote.” It is now 50 years later.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same. But the thing is at least today there is a light being shone on what people of color have gone through.

At least it’s being seen. There was a lot of turmoil during that time in the’60s. Being involved in the Civil Rights Movement and in the Women’s Movement. There were

so many things intertwining in my life,” Kennedy says.

In early summer 1969, what would turn out to be a watershed moment in the Gay Rights Movement was fast approaching.

“At Stonewall, that last weekend in June. It was a Friday. Everybody went to the Stonewall Inn, dressing up to go uptown for Judy Garland’s wake,” Kennedy recalled. Garland died the previous weekend. She was 47. Her most famous role as an actress came as a teenager in the film “The Wizard of Oz,” during which she sang the song “Over the Rainbow.”

“Judy Garland was always a friend to what in those days we called ‘The Underground,’ so everybody got together to go uptown to go to her wake,” Kennedy says. Newspaper reports count a legion of more than 20,000 Garland fans jamming the streets of Manhattan’s Upper East Side to pay their respects to the actress at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home on East 81st Street.

“When they got uptown, the lines were stretched around the block where she was lying in repose. It started to rain. A thunderstorm broke out. Everybody got soaking wet and went back (downtown) to the Stonewall Inn to lament and to talk about Judy Garland,” Kennedy says. “This was the time the cops decided to pull one of their famous raids.

They would raid the bars on the weekends in Greenwich Village and that night at the Stonewall Inn when they came down... the word had gone out throughout The Village. Everyone emptied out of the bars and came into the street. That was the Stonewall Uprising. They called it a riot, but it was not a riot. It was an uprising and it lasted from Friday until Monday,” she says. continue to page 30...

Tickets for 2021 Season at Saratoga Race Course On Sale June 9 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Race Course will reopen to fans at near full capacity for the 2021 summer meet.

Season and weekly ticket plans for the 2021 meet, which opens on Thursday, July 15 and continues through Monday, Sept.

6, will go on sale on Wednesday, June 9 at 10 a.m. at NYRA.com.

Season admission passes will also be available for purchase at that time.

In order to re-open Saratoga Race Course to fans at near full capacity, NYRA will designate most sections for vaccinated fans only, including the popular Saratoga backyard. This policy aligns with current New York State guidance for large outdoor sports and entertainment venues, which allows for fully vaccinated sections to operate at full capacity without social distancing measures in place.

All fans who show proof of vaccination via the New York State Excelsior Pass on Opening Day, Thursday, July 15, will receive free Grandstand general admission. Fans from outside New York State may redeem free admission by showing their Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card.

Season and weekly ticket plans for reserved seats in the Clubhouse, Grandstand, The Stretch and Fourstardave Sports Bar will go on sale on Wednesday, June 9, in addition to season admission passes.

Season passes, which are valid for vaccinated fans only, provide admission to all 40 days at Saratoga Race Course. Season passes do not include reserved seating and will be available by digital download only. Printed versions or hard copies will not be available.

A Grandstand season pass is $50.

A Clubhouse season pass is $75.

Season passes may be purchased at NYRA.com beginning on June 9.

Individual tickets and tickets for other areas of Saratoga Race Course, including dining, will go on sale at a later date.

In addition to the historic and family-friendly backyard picnic area, sections that will be reserved exclusively for vaccinated fans and will operate at full capacity will include: the 1863 Club, The Stretch, Turf Terrace, Porch, Clubhouse and most of the stadium seats within the Grandstand.

Under New York State guidelines, non-vaccinated children under the age of 16 will be admitted to seating and hospitality areas designated for vaccinated fans when accompanied by a vaccinated adult.

A limited number of seating areas will be available for non-vaccinated fans, who will be

required to observe social distancing guidelines and to wear a facial covering at all times during their day at Saratoga Race Course.

Single-day Grandstand general admission tickets are $7 and Clubhouse general admission tickets are $10. Walk-up admission will be available daily and does not include reserved seating. Upon entry, fans must submit proof of vaccination by presenting the CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card or digitally through the New York State Excelsior Pass.

Individuals are considered fully vaccinated by the CDC/New York State 14 days or more after receiving the second dose in a two-dose series (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), or 14 days or more after they have received a single-dose vaccine (Johnson & Johnson / Janssen).

NYRA reserves the right to amend admission protocols based on updates and adjustments by the CDC and New York State.

The 40-day summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course will feature 76 stakes worth $21.5 million in total purses highlighted by the 152nd renewal of the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers on Aug. 28 and the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on Aug. 7, as the anchors of two of the most prestigious racing days in North America.

Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation Announces Purchase, Plans to Revive 65 Phila Street

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation announced last week it had purchased a long-neglected building at 65 Phila St., which will now be revived.

The Foundation has advocated for the preservation of 65 Phila Street since the inception of its endangered buildings list in 1998. The 1851 Italianate style house clad with wood clapboard located at 65 Phila Street was constructed by Alexander A. Patterson, an architect and builder. That same year the brick

Italianate style house located at 69 Phila Street was constructed by mason Robert Hunter. Both houses are listed as contributing buildings to the East Side Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Foundation opposed the owner’s proposals to demolish both, the 65 and 69 Phila Street buildings. The latter building has since been sold to new owners who plan to restore it, according to SSPF. Mark Haworth, an investor and a member of the Foundation, had an interest in preserving the

buildings. He provided the necessary low-interest financing to allow the Foundation to acquire the property for $235,000.

“Our goal is to make it safe for future owners and the neighborhood, something that is long overdue,” said Samantha Bosshart, Executive Director of the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, in a statement. The Foundation plans to start with environmental remediation, necessary structural repairs, and a new roof.

Construction costs have risen significantly in the last 18 months so the Foundation will lean on the community for financial and inkind support in addition to utilizing funds they have raised over the past few years to undertake a special project such as this.

The Foundation’s initial goal is to raise $250,000, the preliminary estimated cost to complete the identified scope of work.

The Foundation recently raised $50,000 to restore the most at-risk stained-glass windows at the First Baptist Church and $475,000 to restore the Spirit of Life & Spencer Trask Memorial in Congress Park in partnership with the City of Saratoga Springs.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Locally based equine artist Sharon Crute has signed a licensing agreement with Mchezo to produce a colorful and thrilling thoroughbred racing themed jigsaw puzzle based on her artwork.

The 1,000-piece puzzle, which will be titled “Into the First Turn,” is scheduled for release in September. It features an action-packed scene where a tightly packed group of horses are angling for position as they race into the first turn at historic Saratoga Race Course.

FANTASTIC FOOD Saratoga Springs Putnam Market Named Among the 50 Greatest Food Stores In The World

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Putnam Market, located at 431 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs was recently named one of the 50 greatest food stores in the world by the Financial Times, an internationally renowned daily newspaper focused on business and economic current affairs.

The ranking included small, independent groceries and delis from New York to Berlin to Singapore. Of the 50 greatest food stores 16 were in the U.S., including iconic New York stores Russ & Daughters, the 2nd Avenue Deli on the Lower East Side, and Barney Greengrass. Also included was La Fromagerie, Marylebone, London whose Cheese Room served as a template for the one in Putnam Market.

The Financial Times article is titled “The 50 greatest food stores in the world: Where to find the best produce on the planet, from classic New York delis and Indian spice emporiums to German sausage shops,” and was published May 18.

Putnam Market opened for business June 30, 1995 and the

sandwiches debuted that autumn.

Chefs started production of salads and bakery items in 1997 and wine sales began in 1998. In June 2012, The Cheese Room debuted

at Putnam Market, a glass-walled space kept at optimal cheese-ripening temperature, surrounding customers with some of the best cheeses in the world.

JUST ADD WATER LAKE LUZERNE — Adirondack Extreme Adventure Course announced its acquisition of tubing company Tubby Tubes. The announcement falls upon the eve of Tubby Tube's 20th season.

Eric & Heather Hamell opened Tubby Tubes in 2002 and later purchased The Lake George Guide. Tubby Tubes new owner, Jamie Johnson, says he’s excited to add water to his family of adventure-centric activities in the Lake George area which include eight adventure courses and the new “Low Rider” zipline course which opened this past April.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs High School celebrated their seniors last week as they handed out yearbooks and caps and gowns.

On Wednesday, May 26, volunteers set up a drivethrough celebration from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the front circle of the high school. Seniors, some who decked out their cars with graduation decorations and the names of the colleges they will attend in the fall, entered from the West Avenue entrance to be the first to pick up the 2020-2021 yearbooks and their caps and gowns for graduation.

Drive-through or drive-by parties and celebrations such as this have become a popular way to celebrate special events during the pandemic while remaining socially distanced.

“With all of the lockdowns and missed events due to COVID, the administration and the parents wanted to give our 2021 seniors a celebration to mark their achievements and celebrate their success,” said Traci Jersen, parent of one of the seniors. “A special thank you to the Saratoga Springs Police, Fire Department, Principal Tsao, teachers and high school staff, and

parent volunteers for making this a fun day that we hope will become an annual event.”

Organizers also wanted to thank Stewart’s Shops, Price Chopper, Saratoga Water, and Walmart for their donations.

On May 20, the Saratoga Springs High School Graduation Committee announced that one graduation ceremony will be held for the Class of 2021 on June 25 at 9 a.m. at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). A limited number of guests will be allowed per graduate. The Graduation Committee made the following statement, that can be found on the school’s website along with any updates regarding the event.

“We appreciate the assistance that we have received from SPAC with the goal of offering the most meaningful graduation ceremony for our students. Skidmore College Appoints New Collyer Vice President for Advancement SARATOGA SPRINGS — Carey Anne Zucca, a demonstrated high-impact fundraiser in the field of higher education, has been named the new Collyer Vice President for Advancement at Skidmore College.

In this role, Zucca will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the College’s fundraising and alumni engagement efforts and will serve as a key member of the President’s Cabinet. She will lead more than 50 employees within the Office of Advancement, including Development, Alumni Relations and College Events, and Advancement Services.

Zucca has served as Senior Executive Director of Development and Alumni Affairs at University

of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering since 2015, and has been a leader in stewardship and fundraising efforts at the university since 2007.

y far, the most common question a plant-based eater hears is, “Where do you get your protein?”

Over and over again, people seem very concerned about being able to get enough protein from plant-based meals.

Yet, it’s understandable that people are skeptical. With all the advertising and media touting protein’s importance, combined with Big Agriculture’s promotion of animal-based foods as the centerpiece of all meals, it’s easy to see why people are focused on this one nutrient.

Judging by food marketing trends in recent years, suddenly everyone needed more protein. If some protein was good, more must be better, or so the logic seems to go. But it’s not that simple.

An excessive focus on protein consumption means you will likely lower other important nutrition from your daily intake. Additionally, if you’re eating animal-based protein, you are consuming saturated fat and cholesterol that contribute to heart disease and other chronic illnesses.

Many expert sources suggest that adult women need roughly 46 grams and adult men 56 grams of protein daily. More accurate calculations can be made using one’s weight and adjusting for activity levels and fitness goals.

The average American eats much more protein every day than is needed, mostly from eggs, meat, poultry, fish/seafood, and dairy. However, for those seeking alternatives, there is plenty of protein in a well-rounded, plant-based diet, which will also add increased fiber and valuable vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.

Enjoying protein-packed plant dishes can be easy and inexpensive without buying highly processed vegan “meat” or “cheese” substitutes. Plant sources of protein include legumes (beans, lentils, peas, peanuts), nuts, and grains.

Soy products, including edamame, soy milk, tofu, and tempeh, are especially rich in protein.

In addition to the plant-protein All-Stars above, many vegetables have small amounts of protein, which when combined over the course of a day will meet one’s requirements.

As noted in the recent film The Game Changers, which profiled a variety of high-performance athletes who eat a plant-based diet, some of the largest and strongest mammals, such as elephants and gorillas, thrive by eating only plants. That’s food for thought!

I

answer a LOT of gardening questions and it you’re digging up and moving an already established tree shrubs when you’re purchasing from the garden center is interesting to see the questions change as or shrub, that’s called transplanting. If you attempt this so you aren’t disturbing the root system or shocking the during the long hot days of summer when the plant is in plant. Indeed, they’ll be grateful to you for getting them the season progresses.

There’s one misconception that crops up every year as summer begins about the difference between “planting” and “transplanting”...and there is a HUGE difference.

Here’s a typical situation: A customer is looking at the selection of flowering shrubs that are on sale and seems like they want to purchase some but then they’ll say, “I should probably wait though.” Then I’ll ask, “Why?” “I’ve heard that you shouldn’t transplant shrubs during summer.”

Over the years, I’ve heard this many times and, quite literally speaking, the statement is true but...there’s a major difference between “planting” and “transplanting.” When

the full flush of growth, you run a very real risk of sending the plant into fatal shock. Transplanting is best done while the plant is dormant during late fall or very early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.

When you shop in your local nursery or garden center, you are buying plants that were dug and balled or potted much earlier when the plant was still dormant. What you are doing when you bring your new shrub or perennial home is planting not transplanting. Don’t you think trees at the garden center would be happier planted in the cool, dark earth rather than sitting on the ground in their pots or balls in the heat until fall? You aren’t digging up established

into the cool, moist earth. It is the act of digging them up and transplanting that causes severe stress.

Many folks put off their planting until fall because they think that they shouldn’t do it now. If you have planting to do, do it as soon as you can. Planting in June or July is better than August; and August is better than September and so on. The longer the plant has to establish a root system before winter dormancy, the better. Think about it... if it wasn’t possible to plant in summer, landscapers would be out of business.

Leaning Birch Farm

FOR THE SALMON:

• 1 lb salmon fillet*

• 2 oz soy sauce

• 5 oz bag “Zesty Mix” salad greens* (Leaning Birch Farm)

• 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil

• large handful pea shoots* (Leaning Birch Farm)

• 2 tsp local honey*

• A small handful of micro cilantro* (Leaning Birch Farm) • 2 tbsp neutral flavor high smoke point cooking oil • Fine sea salt

• juice from 2 lemons • 1 tsp hoisin sauce (optional) • 2-inch piece of ginger, peeled and grated or finely minced • 3 cloves garlic, crushed, grated or minced

INSTRUCTIONS:

t’s about an hour before sunset. A truckload of deep brown compost has just arrived at Leaning Birch Farm. It sits in a heap near the garden beds and high tunnels that Dan and Rose Fera began putting in their backyard five years ago.

Nic, their son, greets me as I pull up, but his focus is on the compost. A former coffeeshop worker and musician, he pays close attention to the aesthetics – the color, the texture, the smell. He thrusts his arms deep into the heap and pulls out a handful. He forms a ball and lets its crumble through his palms back into the pile. He then buries his nose into a handful, savoring its smell.

in Broadalbin. The house came with a yard filled with good soil and abutted a pond. It also came with a mortgage that was nearly twice the monthly amount they had been paying in rent.

Leaning Birch Farm is among several new produce vendors at this year’s Saratoga Farmers’ Market.

The Feras grow dozens of varieties of vegetables in approximately 1.5 acres of space. They use intensive, high-yield planting techniques to maximize their space, which as Nic notes, teaches that “you don’t need a lot of land to make a decent living.”

Garlic as a sole moneymaker never materialized, but the idea helped the Feras see the hunger for fresh local foods. They began selling to restaurants, via a farm stand, and through a CSA. About three years ago, they joined their first farmers’ market, and now sell at markets in Schenectady, Glens Falls, and Saratoga.

Nic grew up in Saratoga Springs, where his parents were renters. Dan restored violins and Rose worked as a clinical director for a special education school.

All three had a flair for art and a fondness for fresh food. Nic began playing music at coffeeshops, and ultimately worked in the business himself.

“It’s a cool feeling to realize how many other people also are sitting down to dinner, eating our vegetables,” adds Rose. “We’re not just taking care of ourselves but our community, too.”

Dan and Rose had a garden and relatively low rent.

Still, they yearned to build equity by doing something they loved. That desire led them to purchase a house

Dan had a plan: Pay the mortgage with garlic.

“I had heard somewhere that you could make $40,000 a year on an acre of garlic,” he said with a laugh.

1. Add all ingredients for the dressing to a tall, slender jar or measuring cup. If available, use an immersion blender until well emulsified. Otherwise, mix vigorously with a fork. Set aside.

2. Pat salmon fillet dry with paper towels. Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat. We prefer a well-seasoned cast iron or carbon steel pan, otherwise use a nonstick pan. Add the 2 tbsp of neutral cooking oil to the heated pan. Generously salt both sides of the salmon. Once oil is shimmering and rippling, add salmon fillet to the pan, skin side down, and do not disturb.

Cook 8-10 minutes on the skin side, or until bottom 1/3 of its thickness begins to lighten and turn opaque and brown, crisp edges appear.

3. While fish is cooking, add the Zesty Mix and pea shoots to a large mixing bowl. Add roughly 2/3 of the salad dressing and toss well to evenly coat.

4. When salmon has finished cooking on the skin side, give the pan a subtle but affirmative shake to see if the fish frees from the pan. If so, slide a very thin fish spatula under and flip the fish to its other side. If not, first gently lift the corners and edges from the pan with the spatula, and then flip. Cook 5 minutes longer on medium-high. Remove from heat and allow to rest in pan for 5 minutes. Serve salad into large dinner bowls. Once salmon has cooled somewhat but while still warm, transfer to a cutting board and cut into two equal portions, skin side up. We found a very sharp bread knife to work very well for this. Top each salad bowl with salmon, and pour evenly over both servings the remaining third of dressing. Garnish salmon with a generous pinch of micro cilantro. Serve immediately.

Game Changer Hello my Foodie Friends !

So many of us have cut our hands while washing our knives. I know my wife has (or did) and watched in horror as she held her hand above her head to stop the bleeding. We are faced with the dilemma on how to properly wash our knives. Good knives are the engines of the kitchen.

While it might be tempting to throw them in the dishwasher, this is not an ideal method for keeping your knives in top shape. Viola Wüsthof, the first female CEO of her family’s knife company Wüsthof and a repository of seven generations worth of knife knowledge, says the biggest misconception about cleaning knives is that they can be washed in the same manner as other kitchen utensils. “A dishwasher can be detrimental to the quality of your knife,” she says. “They are often too abrasive and based on the type of detergent used, the process can cause rust or corrosion.” Think of your knives as investment pieces for your kitchen, a little sweat equity is a small price to pay to keep your tools in working order. Knives should not be put into the sink until you are ready to clean them. You want to prevent any contact from other dishes or pots and pans going into the sink.

This helps to prevent blade damage. Placing blades in your dishwater can also be dangerous as you can’t see what’s beneath the water. You don’t want to get injured. All knives, regardless of blade or handle material, should be hand washed in warm water, rinsed, and immediately dried.

Cleaning sharp knives and cutlery can be a hazardous task, but there is an innovative washing-up brush that makes it easier. This brush can be a game changer in how you properly clean and take care of your knives. Good knives need to be looked after. This means that you need to use, clean, sharpen and store them properly. If you take good care of your knives they will continue to amaze you time and time again. We advise you to always wash your kitchen knives by hand, even if the supplier states that the knife is dishwasher proof. A knife with a wooden handle will visibly get damaged and a riveted handle will eventually tear at the rivets. In addition, the handle can break because of the heat. Aggressive detergents can cause irreparable damage to your knife. Detergent can af-fect hardened steel and plastics and can leave specs of rust on the blade and leave you with dull handles.

INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons olive oil

for effective cleaning, has a textured hand-grip, and is easy to store. You can also use this brush to wipe food off forks, spoons, and butter knives.

Just get it soapy and pull the blade through a few times. Your fingers stay protected and the sharp blade gets brushed clean.

CHIPOTLE KETCHUP: • 1 cup ketchup

• 12 ounces assorted mushrooms (such as cremini, lobster, chanterelles, and stemmed shiitakes), chopped

• 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck (80% lean) or ground turkey (90% lean) • 1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil

• 2 to 3 tablespoons pureed canned chipotle in adobo (depending on how spicy you prefer it)

• 1 small shallot, finely diced

• 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese

• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 4 hamburger buns, split; toasted, if desired.

• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves

• Chipotle Ketchup

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large saute pan over high heat until almost smoking. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the shallot, season with salt and pepper, and cook until the mushrooms are golden brown, about 5 minutes. Stir in the thyme and parsley and transfer to a bowl.

2. Divide the meat into 4 equal portions (about 6 ounces each). Form each portion loosely into a 3/4-inch-thick burger and make a deep depression in the center with your thumb. Season both sides of each burger with salt and pepper.

3. Cook the burgers using the canola oil (see Cook’s Note) and topping each one with a slice of cheese and a basting cover during the last minute of cooking.

4. Place the burgers on the bun bottoms and top each burger with chipotle ketchup, if using, and a large spoonful of the mushrooms. Cover with the bun tops and serve immediately.

CHIPOTLE KETCHUP: Whisk together the ketchup, chipotle, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. The sauce will keep for 1 week in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator.

Warmer weather means children will be looking forward to having some fun in the sun.

While running and playing, kids are bound to work up a sweat. This is why it is important to make sure they are staying hydrated while enjoying their time outdoors. Water is needed in the body to regulate temperature, help digest food, and to excrete waste. It is important to replenish the water that is lost in urine, sweat, and even from the air we breathe so our bodies can continue to carry out these functions.

14-18 need 10-14 cups daily. These recommendations include drinks and any water provided from solid foods, like fruits and vegetables. Fruits and some vegetables have a high water-content so they are a great snack that will also keep you hydrated. Watermelon, strawberries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and cucumbers are all nutrient-rich and hydrating; perfect for those hot summer days.

Due to their smaller size, children have a higher risk of becoming dehydrated. This is because they have a larger proportion of skin available to lose sweat and be exposed to the hot sun. Children are also not always able to recognize when they get thirsty and might forget to stop for a drink.

If a child complains of headaches or dizziness, or has cracked lips, poor concentration, dark yellow urine, or fatigue, these are signs that they may be dehydrated.

Getting children to drink more water might not always be easy, but there are a few ways to make it more enjoyable for them. Kids like to be involved, try having them pick out their own reusable water bottle, colorful paper straws, or fun shaped ice cube trays at the store so they are excited about using them. For children who do not enjoy plain water, adding fruit slices for more flavor and color might make it more appealing to them.

Popsicles are also a great way to keep kids hydrated; however, most are full of artificial flavorings and colors and don’t provide many nutrients.

Try making homemade popsicles for a hydrating afternoon snack with the recipe on the next page! Other creative ways to keep your child hydrated is to serve them smoothies or cold soup.

The amount of water children need varies depending on age, body size, activity level, health, and even the temperature outside. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends the following fluid needs for children: ages 4-8 need 7 cups daily, ages 9-13 need around 9 cups daily, and ages

Garnish with a small sprig of fresh mint and a light sprinkle of cinnamon. Makes 4, 1 cup servings.

Free movies in Wiswall Park are back for the 14th summer in a row, presented by the Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association on the first Fridays of June, July, August and September. SARATOGA SPRINGS — Outside yoga classes return to the Saratoga Spa State Park on Monday, June 7 and continue through Sept 6. Daily classes will be held under the Brick Arches behind the Spa Little Theater, across from the tennis courts. Yoga classes are donation based. Just bring your yoga mat and props and let nature be your soundtrack.

All levels are welcome to enjoy these 60- and 75-minute classes, taught by 500 Hour Registered Yoga Teachers, Amy DeLuca, Judy Pawlick, Julie Coluccio and Julie Bell.

Created in 2013, Yoga in Spa State Park brings students out of the

American Modern Ensemble performs the world premiere production of “Cocoa Cantata,” music by Saratoga Springs resident Robert Paterson (and libretto

Bach’s “Coffee Cantata;” both feature Cree Carrico, soprano, Steven Stull, baritone, and David Neal, bass-baritone. “Cocoa Cantata” is a mini-drama with sparkling roles for soprano, baritone, and bassbaritone, exploring power and ethics in the multi-billion-dollar chocolate industry, using Bach’s instrumentation.

“Cocoa Cantata” is delicious to anyone who loves chocolate— or tries to control their craving for it! Also on the program is a contemporary adaptation of J.S. Bach’s

“Coffee Cantata” (c. 1734). More than just an English version of the German libretto by Christian Friedrich Henrici, this new work aims for a “fresh-brewed” vision of the father-daughter conflict over java. Cote’s new libretto retains the essential plot: a frustrated father tries to convince his coffee-chugging daughter to forsake the bean. Tango Fusion Dance Company Starting InPerson Classes June 7

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Tango Fusion Dance Company is starting in-person classes again in an outdoor setting.

Starting Monday, June 7, Tango Fusion instructors Diane Lachtrupp, Johnny Martinez and Jen Cornell will be offering classes at the large, covered YMCA pavilion on West Avenue in Saratoga Springs.

They will be offering beginner swing and intermediate/ advanced swing at 7 p.m. and beginner and intermediate/advanced waltz at 7:45. New students may try one class for free and do not need a partner or experience.

“I got there Saturday night.

Sylvia Rivera and I were together on the streets that night,” Kennedy says. Today, Rivera is heralded as a Transgender Civil Rights pioneer. “We got chased by a cop into what was then a culde-sac in the area - funny enough it was called Gay Street - but there was no way to get through. This cop took one look at me, thought I was a man, saw my collar, and said: Oh, there’s a (homophobic slur) imitating a priest. When he went for his gun, I grabbed two trash can covers, which weren’t chained down, and I clanged him upside the head. Sylvia Rivera and I got away.”

Today, Kennedy is regarded being a gay rights pioneer, and makes her home in New York City – “the boogie-down Bronx,” she says with a laugh, sharing a term of endearment used by some residents as a reference to the borough’s claim as the birthplace of hip hop. She had five sons - “my Saratoga tribe” – whose achievements range from securing college

basketball championships and high-ranking municipal posts, to Presidential citations for volunteering for military service. She is a grandmother and a great-grandmother, and continues to operate a temple, and teaches African history and Goddess Awareness.

Rev. Kennedy was featured in the recent project “Not Another Second,” which features LGBT+ seniors and their stories at The Watermark in Brooklyn as well as in a book of the same name, which may be reviewed at: notanothersecond.com.

Kennedy is also one of the featured activists in a new documentary titled “Cured,” anticipated to make its way to national TV screens in the U.S. this fall.

Psychedelic Furs Tour to Stage in Albany ALBANY — The Psychedelic Furs have announced plans for a North American headline tour.

The “Made Of Rain Tour” – titled after their most recent release - kicks off Sept. 15 in Indianapolis and continues through late November.

Highlights include shows at historic venues such as Chicago’s Vic Theatre, New Orleans’ Tipitina’s, and New York City’s legendary Apollo Theatre.

The tour’s last date – Nov. 20, is slated to take place in Albany.

Made of Rain is preceded by seven studio albums, including The Psychedelic Furs (1980), Talk Talk Talk (1981), Forever Now (1982), Mirror Moves (1984), Midnight To Midnight (1987), Book Of Days (1989) and World Outside (1991). The Levin Brothers, Jazz Quartet, Live at The Strand Theatre June 17 HUDSON FALLS — Tony Levin has showcased his bass skills on Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time,” Alice Cooper’s “Welcome To My Nightmare,” Lou Reed’s “Berlin” album song ‘The Kids’ – arguably eight minutes of the most skin-crawling sonic overture committed to vinyl – and kerjillions of other tunes that have spanned several decades.

On Thursday, June 17, Tony Levin will stage his upright bass and cello alongside Pete Levin’s keyboards, Jeff Ciampa’s guitar and Jeff Siegel’s drums at The Strand Theatre for a 7:30 p.m. performance.

Levin Brothers was founded by Pete and Tony Levin in 2013 after five decades of playing with a virtually who’s who in multiple genres of music. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2014, and the follow up live album ’Special Delivery’ in 2017. Saratoga Group “Warden and Co.” Launches Campaign for New Album

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga musical group comprised of guitar/vocalist Seth Warden, viola/violinist Doug Moody, and percussionist Brian Melick have launched a Kickstarter Campaign to fund a new recording, radio campaign and marketing initiative.

As “Seth and the Moody Melix,” they write and perform family and children’s music. Under the name “Warden and Co.” they create an adult-friendly sound, and first released music under the name “Warden and Co.” in 2019 with the EP “Songs for Everyone” produced by Jim Mastrianni.

The group has set a goal to raise $15,000 and the Kickstarter Campaign runs from June 1 to June 30. Multiple investment tiers have been established to help fund the project and bring the next album to life. Warden and Co. anticipates releasing the new album next February.

Troy Hidden Garden Tour In-Person June 10

TROY — The Troy Hidden Garden Tour will be held in-person next week, after going virtual in 2020 out of caution during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tour, a fundraiser benefiting the Friends of Prospect Park, will be held rain or shine on Thursday, June 10 from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tourgoers will be expected to observe the New York State COVID protocols in effect in the Capital Region at the time.

There are 42 private and semiprivate gardens on the self-guided walking tour this year, located throughout the Washington Park, Historic Sage and adjoining neighborhoods of downtown Troy.

Tourgoers may check in any time after 4 p.m. in the Russell Sage College parking lot on First Street to receive the tour map.

The gardens may be visited in any order, though tourgoers may be steered toward certain gardens first to alleviate crowding. Since visiting all gardens on the tour during the event hours is unlikely, there are four suggested garden cluster tour routes between .5 miles and .8 miles walking distance.

Age" and signs of production may be visible on the day of the tour.

Tourgoers are encouraged to visit a real-life TV set at Monument Square during or after the garden tour, as it is also part of an elaborate backdrop for the series, a Victorian-era period drama from the creators of Downton Abbey.

The one-day Hidden Garden Tour, now in its 22nd year, has attracted more than 1,000 tourgoers in a single day in previous years.

Free event parking is provided at the Russell Sage College lot, located at First and Division streets. Additional free parking is

available in lots farther south on First Street.

In game one, Ronan Rowe had a two-run single. Tyler Weygand also had 2 RBIs, and one more in the second game. In game two, Pierce Byrne and Dylan Mulholland recorded doubles. Aidan Crowther had 5 RBIs, Hunter Fales had 3, and Mulholland had 2.

Cambridge’s Eli Danio had 2 triples, one in the first game and one in the second. He had 3 RBIs between both games. Hunter Thomas had 2 RBIs in game one.

Young pitchers got the job done on the mound for the Saints in the first game. Rowe, an eighth grader, got the win. Rowe pitched 5 innings, allowed 2 earned runs, five hits, four walks, and had 6 strikeouts.

Seventh grader Pierce Byrne took the mound in the sixth inning to finish out the game and allowed 2 earned runs, 2 hits, and a walk.

Freshman pitcher Crowther got the win for game two. Crowther pitched four innings, gave up 4 earned runs, 5 hits, a walk, and struck out 4 batters.

SCC v. Greenwich Saratoga Central Catholic got the 3-2 win in a close league game against Greenwich on Monday, June 1.

Winning pitcher Ryan McCarroll was on the mound all 7 innings.

Freshman pitcher Rylee Cornell recorded the win for game two.

Cornell pitched 4.1 innings, gave up 4 earned runs, 5 hits, 6 walks, and struck out 2.

Also at the plate for the Saints, Megan Cornell went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 6 RBIs in game two.

Calleigh Sisk had a solo home run in game one and a double in game two. Ryan McDonald and Emma Brown each had two-hit games.

The Saints overall record improves to 9-4.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga City Ballet (SCB) has provided education in the art of dance for young children through adults in Saratoga Springs for many years. With the closures due to COVID, Saratoga City Ballet seamlessly provided opportunities for their students to continue to train and connect with their peers and teachers with live classes online.

In order to provide opportunities to learn and prepare pieces for

performance, artistic director Beth Fecteau choreographed variations from her full-length ballet Sleepless Beauty. Students will perform these variations which will be shared with families and friends via video.

Saratoga City Ballet is now offering summer programming for dancers ages 3 to 18, including beginner and advanced classes in Broadway Jazz, Ballet, Storybook “Swan Lake,” and Master Classes with Professional

NYCB dances in conjunction with Ballet in the City. Refer to www.saratogacityballet.com for program details and registration.

In addition, with theaters opening this year, Saratoga City Ballet and Nacre have announced they will hold auditions for ages 5-adult in September 2021 for the annual full-length Nutcracker to be held at the Egg Theater in Albany. Congrats to this week’s Athlete of the Week – Sophia Damiano!

Sophia finished her gymnastics career on the varsity team at Saratoga Springs High School in February, after being Co-Captain for the last two years. She just recently finished her USA Gymnastics (USAG) season at the Eastern Nationals. She has done competitive gymnastics since the fourth grade. She also competes with Cartwheels Gym in Clifton Park.

Sophia has an impressive list of stats for her high school gymnastics career. As a freshman, she placed 2nd in the All Around Sectional Tournament (2017-2018) and advanced to the State Meet. As a sophomore she placed 3rd in the All Around Sectional Tournament (2018-2019) and advanced to the State Meet. Her junior year she claimed the title of Sectional Tournament Champion (2019-2020) and set tournament records in the Beam (9.425) and Vault (9.45). She had the second best All Around score at the tournament since 2006 with a 37.35. She medaled on vault in 5th place, tying the Section 2 Vault record with a 9.475 at the NYSPHAA State Meet on Long Island.

This year, her senior year at Toga, Sophia broke her own records. She had a career high All Around score of 37.45, she had a personal best on Floor with a 9.575, she captured the Section 2 vault record with a 9.65 her first meet of the year, and she broke Vault records for a 3rd time at a later meet and established the Section 2 record with a 9.75. This past season Toga won 7 out of 9 meets in the Suburban Council.

Her senior year at USAG States, she took 1st in Vault, 2nd in Bars, and 2nd in All Around. At USAG Regionals in Massachusetts, she took 2nd in Vault and 4th in Beam. She then advanced and traveled to Eastern Nationals with Region 6 in Georgia, where she competed against 226 senior level gymnasts.

She medaled on Vault with a 6th place finish with a score of 9.6.

Sophia has been a High Honor Roll student for all four years at Saratoga Springs High School. She balances her AP and Honors course loads with a 20+ hours a week training schedule. She has been a member of SALT Club and Spanish National Honor Society. She has volunteered for SNACpack, Helping Hoops, and Ryan’s Run over the last few years.

Several NCAA collegiate gymnastics teams were recruiting Sophia, and she is thrilled to be continuing her career at Rhode Island College with Coach Monica Nassi, a former Spanish National Olympic Team member. She will be a Specialist in Vault, Beam, and Floor during her freshman year, while studying Registered Nursing to further pursue a Nurse Practitioner degree.

Sophia has a positive outlook on her athletic and academic experiences. She is reflective and grateful for everyone that has helped her reach her potential.

Brandtville Boogie!

SARATOGA SPRINGS — This fun family-friendly walking tour invites guests to enjoy the scenic beauty of a neighborhood historically known at Brandtville.

The nearly 1-mile loop encourages participants to look for the oldest homes in the neighborhood and identify other interesting remnants that remain in Brandtville. This historically African American rural farming community dates back to the 1800’s. Located at the southeastern edge of Saratoga Springs, NY, Brandtville is situated south of the Southside Recreation Center across Crescent Street onto Doten Avenue. Between the dog park and Racino, this quiet neighborhood is a veritably verdant extension of The Spa State Park.

Carol Daggs, Author of Saratoga Soul Brandtville Blues is a descendant of the original Brandtville residents. This summer Daggs is offering guided walking tours on Monday mornings at 10 a.m. The approximately 1-mile loop is a comfortable stroll starting on Doten Avenue. North to Penn Street, the course turns left at Penn Street and meets Joshua Road. Left onto Joshua takes the course south toward Shaw Drive.

From Shaw, turn left onto East Broadway, continue straight all

the way to Jefferson Street and arrive at the west edge of the Racino. Take a left onto Jefferson and walk north to Taylor Street, turn left onto Taylor. Continue straight past the mailboxes to Doten Avenue. Turn right, walk down to the starting/ending point at 29 Doten. Congratulations, you’ve successfully completed The Brandtville Boogie!

NYRA To Host Job Fair June 11-12 For Saratoga Race Course Summer Meet

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The New York Racing Association, Inc. will host a two-day job fair on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12 to recruit workers for the 2021 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course, which begins on Thursday, July 15 and continues through Monday, Sept. 6.

As announced by NYRA and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on May 27, the 2021 summer meet will re-open to fans at near full capacity following a season without spectators due to the COVID19 pandemic.

The job fair will take place at Saratoga Race Course within the open-air Events Pavilion. Interviews

will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 11 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 12.

Prospective summer employees should enter through the main gate at Union and East Avenues and park in the main lot. Unvaccinated individuals are required to complete a temperature check prior to entry, wear facial coverings while at Saratoga Race Course and adhere to social distancing guidelines to mitigate the risk of COVID-19.

Opportunities at this year’s job fair will include: hospitality ambassadors; guest services; cashiers; admissions attendants; parking attendants; Bets Squad representatives; white caps/ushers; box office;

betting clerks; general labor; security; porters; cooks; waitstaff; bussers; concessions supervisors and cashiers; cleaners; TV production; and technology support.

Positions are available with NYRA, Integrated Staffing, Levy Restaurants, AllPro and Union Square Events.

Applicants must be at least 15 years of age with New York State Certified Working Papers; prospective security guards, cashiers and betting clerks must be at least 18 years of age to apply. Security guards must have a high school degree or GED to apply. All applicants must bring a photo ID and social security card or I-9 alternative.
