Saratoga Man’s Role in the Evacuation of Americans from Europe

Over 100,000 Americans were traveling or residing in Europe in 1939. As the threat of war became ever more ominous, in August the United States Department of State created a new office to facilitate the evacuation of these Americans. The war began with Germany’s invasion of Poland on September

1. By the end of the year 75% of the Americans in Europe were either home or on their way home. Many American ships and men were involved in this evacuation. One of those sailors was my uncle.

Paul Joseph Phillips was born in Saratoga Springs on October 26 1912. Paul’s father died when he was 9 years old. His mother, Rose, was left to raise and care for 7 children between the ages of 15 and 2. Rose and her 7 children grew to be a very close , supportive family. Paul graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1929, and like many high school graduates of the depression era, he had no firm plan for his future. After graduation, Paul clerked for his uncle, John Phillips, who was a cigar maker and ran a cigar shop on Broadway. Paul, also, played baseball as a pitcher for the county’s twi-light league, Saratoga Athletic Club. The records show he won over half the games he pitched. Paul was also very involved with the local theatre group, Saratoga Community Players, performing, building sets and acting in their productions in the City Hall Theatre.

Paul was hired in 1933 as a bellman by the United States Steamship Lines on the S.S. Manhattan. Paul was promoted to steward in 1937 and moved to the recently launched S.S. Washington. The Washington’s route was New York to Hamburg, Le Havre, Southampton, Cobh and home. Paul, again was promoted in 1938 to assistant clerk to the Purser, and was working in this capacity in 1939.

The S.S. Washington’s initial voyage of 1939 was the liner’s standard route, first stop Hamburg. In Hamburg 90 German Jews boarded the ship fleeing Germany. These passengers left the ship in Southampton. The next voyage the route changed, Naples and Genoa, Italy, Le Havre, France, Southampton, England, Galway Bay, Ireland and home. By mid-summer,

with the unrest increasing, the stops in Italy and France were halted and Lisbon, Portugal was added.

The S.S. Washington arrived in Lisbon in late August 1939 to pick up American evacuees. Paul Phillips was tasked with validating credentials, visas, and passports of the refugees prior to their boarding the ship.He was surprised and delighted to welcome a Saratoga Springs native, Claire Desidoro, who was in line for boarding. Claire graduated from Saratoga Springs High School and Skidmore College. Saratoga Springs was a “small town” at that time and the Phillips and Desidoro families were very close. Claire was employed as an instructor in Romance Languages at Skidmore College and she sailed to Europe in the spring of 1939 in order to take classes at Perugia University of Linguistics in Italy. With the ports in Italy and France abandoned, the American Embassy assisted Claire and other Americans in Italy, by obtaining transport to France and then to Lisbon.

On September 1, 1939 Germany invaded Poland. On the 3rd, Britain, France, Canada declared war on Germany, and the same day a U-Boat sank the British liner Athena causing the deaths of 30 Americans on board. Four days later the Washington was one night out of Lisbon when it was hailed by a U-Boat which directed them to pick up the survivors of the British freighter, Olive Grove, which the U-Boat had sunk. The ship stopped in Southhampton, then steamed on to Galway Bay, and home to New York. The Washington was designed for 1,050 passengers and 700 crew, but this trip the ship carried 1,790 passengers 700 of whom were children! Paul’s mother and sister and Claire’s mother were waiting on the pier when the ship docked in New York.

The S.S. Washington was to immediately return to Europe for more evacuees. However the National Maritime Union refused to let them return without a formal agreement for a 10% bonus for voyages to the war zone . The Union’s demands were still unresolved when Washington left New York for Europe in late spring of 1940.

The Washington arrived in

Lisbon in June, took on board 1,020 refugees and put back to sea. At 5 A.M. the next morning, on June 11, 1940, 180 miles from Lisbon a U-Boat surfaced near the Washington and demanded the vessel be abandoned in 10 minutes. The passengers and 570 crew members hustled into the lifeboats and abandoned the ship, amazingly, with no panic. Eventually, the U-Boat captain realized this vessel was American and left the scene. The passengers and crew remained in the lifeboats for another hour before returning to the ship. The Washington steamed on to anchor in Galway Bay where over 500 additional evacuees were anxious to leave Europe.

Paul Phillips, now the purser’s chief clerk, was deputized to go ashore in the ship’s motor launch, validate the refugees’ credentials and have them moved aboard the ship. When that task was complete, Paul and the crew of the launch headed back to the ship in a windblown, very choppy sea. A rogue wave hit the launch and washed Paul into Galway Bay. Immediately, 2 crewmen jumped into the sea to rescue Paul. With Paul’s help, all 3 scrambled back into the launch. Tragically, very quickly after regaining the launch, Paul was stricken and died in the launch. The Irish authorities and the Gardai held an inquest, on board the Washington into Paul’s death. The inquest ruled the death accidental, the result of shock and cardiac arrest. Paul was 27 years old.

Shortly after the end of the war, Paul J. Phillips, merchant seaman, was recognized by the United States as among the earliest Americans to lose their life in the conflict. Indeed, among the many monuments to those who died as a result of WWII is one erected in 1947 by the parish of the Church of Saint Peter on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. Paul Phillips’ sacrifice is memorialized there, along with 17 other members of the parish.

Paul was my mother’s (Mary Phillips Murray) brother, my uncle. Claire Desidoro was my wife Susanne’s mother’s (Angela Desidoro Tarantino) sister, Sue’s aunt. Paul and Claire’s stories of their experiences are an important part of our family’s history.

ALBANY — Gaston “Gus”

Gagné of Albany, NY, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and greatgreat grandfather passed away on June 21, 2023, at the age of 95. He was born on August 2, 1927, in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, to John and Emma Gagné. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers, son-inlaw Ken Shaver, and daughterin-law Diana Gagné.

At the age of 20, Gus married Doreen Davis on December 26, 1947, in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. They had three children and later moved to Albany, NY, in 1957, where Gus worked as a printer for the Albany Times Union. In 1961, they moved to East Greenbush where they had three more children.

Gus was a loving husband and father who adored his family. He is survived by his wife of 75 years Doreen; his sister Theresa Millette; six children: Larry Gagné, Eileen Rude (Dave), Teresa Wessels (Jim), Marion Morris (Mike), Joseph Gagné (Kim), and John Gagné (Monica). Gus and Doreen were

blessed with 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

In 1970, Gus lost his eyesight completely and had to resign from the Albany Times Union. He helped his wife Doreen work for the Northeastern Association for the Blind at Albany, housing blind students in their home for almost 10 years. Despite his blindness, Gus remained active and enjoyed bowling. He was the President of the American Blind Bowlers Association for many years until he took up golfing. Gus became the President of the Capital District Blind Golfers Association and served in that role for over 20 years. In 2004 he played in his last golf tournament, in Florida, placing first.

Gus golfed with many celebrities, including Dean Martin, Dinah Shore, Flip Wilson, and Glen Campbell. He was also good friends with professional golfer Ken Venturi. In 1987, Gus was invited to play in a golf tournament in Scotland, playing with several Scottish dignitaries.

Gus was a member of the Church of Christ in Glens Falls. He loved his Lord and Savior; he’s now enjoying eternity with Jesus and His Heavenly Father!

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northeastern Association for the Blind at Albany. Gus will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his memory will live on forever.

Ricardo Gauna, 38, of Wilton, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Brent Bovee, 33, of Corinth, was charged with DWI, refusal to take a breath test, aggravated unlicensed operation, moved from lane unsafely, and failure to notify DMV of address change.

Neil Pederson, 71, of Saratoga Springs, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation.

Timothy Everhardt, 30, of Saratoga Springs, was charged with criminal contempt, aggravated harassment, and aggravated family offense.

Mark McGreevy, 64, of Wilmington, Delaware, was charged with assault, and criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation.

Ricardo Henderson, 32, of Schenectady, was charged with DWI, and driving the wrong direction on a one-way street.

On Friday June 16, members of the Saratoga Springs Police Department Investigations Division conducted 37 in person residence checks of those required to register on the New York State Sex Offender Registry and reside in the City of Saratoga Springs. Those who are required to register in New York are classified into three levels. Level 1 and Level 2 offenders are required to report their address yearly with the Department of

Criminal Justice Services, and are required to report every three years for a photograph to be taken. Level 3 offenders are required to report every 90 days to the local police agency, and have a photo taken every year. Any changes to residency status for all three levels must be reported within 10 days to the local police agency for updating to DCJS. These visits were conducted for all three levels living within the city of Saratoga Springs. The Investigations Division is responsible for maintaining registry information and to ensure compliance with reporting to DCJS on changes, and update information of those required to register. These surprise checks were conducted to proactively ensure that those required to register and maintain current information with the Saratoga Springs Police Department were doing so. SARATOGA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

On June 17, the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit and Road Patrol charged Timothy N. Perkins Jr., 35, of Milton with criminal sexual act in the first-degree, sexual abuse in the first-degree, and endangering the welfare of a child, in connection with a suspected sex offense at a residence on Adirondack Circle in the town of Wilton. Perkins allegedly had sexual contact with a child less than 17 years old known to him. He was sent to Saratoga County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 cash bail/$150,000 bond.

On June 16, patrols responded to a report of a 14-year-old who had been assaulted on Geyser Road in the town of Milton. Following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit, it was determined that the juvenile had been assaulted by a person known to him, shot in the face with a pellet or Airsoft type gun and had property

stolen from him. The suspect, a 14-year-old boy, was located and charged with robbery in the first-degree, a felony. He was arraigned in Waterford Town Court by Judge Kopach, and released to the custody of his mother. He is scheduled to appear in Saratoga County Family Court at a later date. The victim was treated at Saratoga Hospital and released.

SARATOGA COUNTY COURT

Dean E. Harrington, 54, of Corinth, was sentenced June 15 to serve two, 1-year local incarceration sentences to run concurrently, after pleading to attempted strangulation, and criminal mischief.

Kip E. Asmus, 40, of Schenectady, pleaded June 16 to felony DWI, charged July 2022 in Waterford. Sentencing Sept. 11.

Thomas B. Waicul, 50, of Halfmoon, was sentenced 1-1/2 to 4-1/2 years incarceration, after pleading to felony DWI, charged October 2022 in Saratoga Springs.

Galway Teen Killed in Single-Car Rollover

SARATOGA COUNTY —

On June 26 Saratoga County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Hans Creek Road in the Town of Providence shortly before 8 p.m. for a report of a one-car, rollover crash with serious injuries and entrapment.

The involved vehicle was occupied only by its driver, 17-year-old Tyler Scocca of Galway. Scocca suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at

the scene by Deputy Saratoga County Coroner Anthony Perniciaro, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation indicated that Scocca was heading west on Hans Creek Road, west of Fayville Road, when he lost control, left the south side of the roadway and rolled over striking a tree. Unsafe speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to authorities.

County Approves 3-Year Contract Resolution with Sheriff’s Office Employees Union

BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County Board of Supervisors

Chairman Theodore T. Kusnierz, Jr. today announced the County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution for a new contract with the United Public Service Employees Union (UPSEU) at its Board Meeting on June 20. The Union represents 131 Sheriff’s Office employees who work in the County Correctional Facility and 911 Communications Center.

“This contract with the Saratoga County United Public Services Employees Union, provides a fair and balanced contract that is beneficial for not only our employees, but also the taxpayers of Saratoga County,” Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chair Theodore T. Kusnierz, Jr. said, in a

statement. “Equally as important, the agreement incorporates measures that will help our Sheriff’s Office recruit and retain qualified employees dedicated to serving our residents at both our County Jail and our Communications Center.”

The three-year agreement provides union members a one year $4,000 wage increase retroactive to January 1, 2023, and incorporates a 2.95% wage increase in both 2024 and 2025. This will help the county attract and retain both corrections officers and 911 Dispatchers, for which the County has a critical fulfillment need.

As part of the agreement, all affected employees will increase their health care contribution and will pay increased copays for health insurance services.

MALTA — Ellsworth

Commons, the popular retail and residential community in downtown Malta, this week announced a renaming of the property to feature two unique identities: the boutique apartment complex now known as The Ellsworth and its accompanying retail and office marketplace, Malta Center.

Developed more than a decade ago to support the Luther Forest Tech Park, today the community incorporates a four-building configuration that houses 312 apartments and 60,000 square

feet of ground-floor commercial, retail and office space at 2545 Route 9 in Malta.

Located along the Route 9 Corridor just north of the traffic circle at Route 67, The Ellsworth and Malta Center offer apartments, eateries, retail storefronts and a variety of services.

Forthcoming improvements to Malta Center include enhanced landscaping and visibility along Route 9; paving and parking upgrades; uniform awnings along the building exterior; and new signage throughout the property.

State Police Conduct an Underage Drinking Enforcement Detail in Saratoga County

Three businesses were highlighted by New York State Police for allegedly not being in compliance under the New York Beverage Control Law Section 65 - Prohibited Sale to Person Under the Age of 21 - during an initiative last week when six Saratoga County businesses were checked for compliance.

Those businesses – all located in Malta, are: CVS, 2535 State Route 9; Stewart’s Shops, 2951 State Route 9, and Wine & Liquor Shop of Malta, 5 Kendall Way.

Three people were charged

with unlawfully dealing with a child in the first-degree, a misdemeanor, after allegedly selling alcohol to persons under the age of 21.

During these investigations, Businesses are checked utilizing a Trooper in plainclothes, and one or several underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or provide a false date of birth.

State Police also recognized the following establishments for their compliance: XtraMart, 2954 State Route 9, Malta, Runway Express, 1402 Saratoga Rd, Ballston Spa, and Valero, 1324 Saratoga Rd, Ballston Spa.

Incumbent city Mayor Ron Kim defeated challenger Chris Mathiesen in the June 27 Democrat Primary Election in Saratoga Springs.

Approximately 1,432 of the 8,330 registered Democrats in Saratoga Springs voted in the primary. Kim secured approximately 60.34% of the votes to Mathiesen’s 39.53%, unofficially.

Notably, Kim and Mathiesen were each also endorsed by other parties, so both - along with Republican candidate John Safford - are anticipated to be on the November Election ballot.

Registered city Democrats hold a 41.5% to 29.1% lead over registered city Republicans among all registered city voters, but it will be interesting to see if that lead varies given the potential of votes being split among Kim and Mathiesen supporters.

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

New city police chief Tyler McIntosh took the oath of office during a 75-minute ceremony at Saratoga Music Hall June 27. The event included a swearing-in of three new officers, multiple promotions of current department members and a variety of citations and recognitions formally commending officers for their recent actions in the line of duty.

“Last year in November, three of our officers lived up to all the training they had undergone and ran in the direction of gunfire,” said Public Safety Commissioner Jim Montagnino. “They protected the lives of others and quieted a tumultuous situation. We are here to thank all our men and women in SSPD and we’re here to commit ourselves to support them here and out there to the best of our ability.”

Retiring Police Chief Shane Crooks recognized members of the current department and offered advice to new department hires Kelsey Lawlor, Vinay Rathore and Sean Carey.

“Law enforcement is more than just a job, it’s a calling,” Crooks said. “Never forget why you took this job…You will see people at their worst, but also have the ability to be the difference that the world needs.”

Saratoga Springs Police Lt. Tyler McIntosh told those assembled at the music hall that he is both humbled and honored in being named city police chief.

“I’ve had a true desire to serve and put others before myself since I was a kid,” said McIntosh, whose military service during the past 17 years included two deployments into combat zones.

“That (military) experience really made it clear to me the importance and power of people working together toward a common objective. That same concept of collaboration and cooperation holds true in ensuring the continued safety of Saratoga Springs,” McIntosh said. “Collaboration between the police and the community is essential.”

McIntosh, a graduate of Plattsburgh State University, joined the Saratoga Springs Police Department in 2012 and rose through the ranks from Patrol Officer to Patrol Sergeant and Patrol Lieutenant before being assigned the duties of Accreditation Lieutenant upon the retirement of Lt. Robert Jillson. Continuing his education after joining the city police department, McIntosh earned a master’s degree in Public Administration from Marist College in 2019, a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia, and earlier this month graduated in the FBI National Academy.

S.O.S Launching New Code Blue Shelter

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The former Grand Union Motel on South Broadway in Saratoga Springs will house the 2023-24 Code Blue Winter Shelter beginning in the fall of 2023, Shelters of Saratoga announced this week.

S.O.S. will operate the shelter in partnership with Saratoga County. The shelter will offer semiprivate rooms to individuals facing homelessness when the temperature drops below 32 degrees.

“In past seasons, the shelter was an open space lined with cots,” S.O.S. Executive Director Duane Vaughn said in a statement. “The new location will offer guests additional privacy, critical

for restful sleep. Sleep is key to a healthy life, and we are working diligently to make accommodations as comfortable as possible. We are pleased to offer nightly shelter in this modified model this coming winter.”

In 2022-23, 271 unduplicated adults used the 61 available shelter cots at Code Blue on Adelphi Street, which was full most nights.

The new location will shelter up to 80 adults and is in addition to the recently opened 35-bed 24/7 all-weather facility operated by RISE, a short walk away. RISE Housing and Support Services opened a year-round low barrier shelter earlier this month at the site of last season’s Code Blue shelter on Adelphi Street.

“We look forward to the

collective impact our programs will have on reducing area homelessness,” Vaughn said. “Reducing area homelessness is a collaborative effort among many Saratoga County human services agencies. We are better together.”

Steve Ethier, owner of the

Grand Union Motel said that while future development plans for the property are underway, the motel can provide safety to those facing homelessness during the cold winter months.

The Code Blue program is funded by the New York State

Office of Temporary Disability in partnership with the County of Saratoga Department of Social Services.

‘AI Breakfast Club’ Meets to Discuss Artificial Intelligence, Technology Landscape

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Artificial intelligence has rapidly altered the technology landscape, and a group of local business leaders have begun to centralize the discussion in the Capital Region.

Sean Austin, CEO of Helios Life Enterprises, and Craig Hall, founder of Marketing Wiz, have established a group to “open up a dialogue” around AI, its effects, and its future, said Hall. The ‘AI Breakfast Club’ hosted its inaugural meeting at Saratoga CoWorks

in downtown Saratoga Springs on June 23.

“We said, ‘What if we put together a conversation with some leaders and try to bring some of the best minds in the region together to really open up a dialogue?’” said Hall. “Because we’re well-positioned here in the Tech Valley region. We have a lot of great minds, we have a lot of great industry leaders. The truth is, we don’t know what the future looks like, but it’s on us to kind of shape

what that future’s going to be.”

Hall said it is “humbling” to be a part of the group, saying he believes AI is the next major shift in technology.

“This is a platform shift on par with the Internet, with the industrial revolution,” said Hall. “Really, it’s going to shape the way we as human beings interact with each other, interact with the world, and ultimately interact in our professions.”

The group featured other local business leaders including Anne McEntee, CEO of Digital Services at General Electric, Kris Walker, senior engineering manager at the Walt Disney Company, Gabby Lichtenberg, director of membership at The Business Council of New York State, Candy Huff, founder and managing director of Celsius, and Tia Felock, founder of TiFe Executive Consulting, among others.

The group discussed a wide variety of topics, including AI’s effect on a variety of industries, government legislation regarding AI, and the future of artificial intelligence and its impacts.

“I thought the conversation was amazing,” said Hall. “We had a wide-ranging discussion that went from policy to small businesses, large businesses in various sectors, financial services, software design, renewable energy,

and we, I think, agreed that we want to continue to shape this as a group and build this community.”

“I think it probably went even better than the highest optimism,” Austin added. “Very optimistic, that idea that we can make something more from this.”

Hall said AI can “empower and enhance people to do more, and to access a depth of knowledge they otherwise might not have.”

“Young people coming into the workforce … they’re going to have access to a depth of information and knowledge that otherwise was reserved to 15 to 20 years of experience,” Hall said.

“Technology is going to move forward,” said Austin. “The internet moved forward, social media moved forward. … No matter

what, it’s going to happen.”

Austin said that AI “can impact everybody now,” and also emphasized the potential local impact, saying, “the Capital Region has a unique opportunity to take advantage of (AI).”

“I grew up in the region,” added Hall, who is a graduate of Siena College. “I’ve been a part of what has been this long-term trend over decades of this technological advancement in the region, and I think that being a part of this conversation today is kind of humbling, in some ways.”

“Saratoga is a very unique spot,” Austin said. “I guess like anything, you want to invent the future you want to live in. We say, why not Saratoga?”

Saratoga Hospital LPNs Graduate From Maria College Nursing Program

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

In the summer of 2020, the Saratoga Hospital Nursing Organization offered licensed practical nurses (LPNs) of the Ambulatory Practice the opportunity to pursue an associate in applied science (AAS) in Nursing at Maria College.

This program was made possible through funding by the Saratoga Hospital Foundation Nursing Scholarship. In May, five LPNs graduated from the program and are prepared to take the board examination to become a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) of New York State.

The new graduates are Renee Summers, Heide Mahay, Rebecca Stanislowsky, Mikayla Carlson and Sara Morizio.

Registered nurses are

academically prepared to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient and client outcomes. The support of the Saratoga Hospital Foundation and the

Nursing Scholarship is instrumental in providing the members of the Nursing Organization with opportunities for ongoing professional development.

New Organization Helping Malta Businesses Connect

MALTA — A new organization is helping small businesses in Malta connect, with the establishment of Malta Business Works.

The group operates similarly to a chamber of commerce, but with a focus on local Malta businesses, holding monthly meetings, helping businesses network, and giving back to the community.

David Rosenberg, co-owner of Brix Wine & Liquor and a member of the Malta Business Works board of directors, said there are currently 17 members in total.

“We do our absolute best to stay true to helping businesses grow,” said Rosenberg. “The networking opportunity for just Malta businesses has been a very big plus for those who do participate in our events. Talking about things such as hiring, merchant services, insurance needs.”

Malta Business Works hosts meetings on the second Thursday of each month, which are open to the public and free to attend, Rosenberg said. The group’s

meeting on June 8 featured a presentation from Malta-based doctor Dan Sooriabalan and Enduring Nutrition owner Kevin Conklin.

Rosenberg said the meetings allow local business owners a chance to network and talk through common issues with each other.

“You have a place to go, to gather around and talk about similar issues,” Rosenberg said. “They may not be the same type of issues, but it’s easier to appreciate that you’re not alone in your situation. … It’s good to know that others feel the same struggles and can get the same benefits from each other.”

The group held its initial interest meeting in December 2021, and has grown steadily since.

Rosenberg said he organized the initial meeting, and named Kim Hickock of Marketing Kangaroo, Cynthia Quade of Signature One Realty, Jim Trainor of Trainor Law PLLC, Shelly Walker of Finishing Touches, and Alison Halpin of Maltavista Optometry as others who have also been involved.

“We all just kept the ball rolling,” said Rosenberg. “We’ve gotten ourselves organized to the

point where we’re now a membership group. We ask for a small $50 membership fee...and are also putting together some community events, including participating in Malta Community Day.”

Rosenberg said the organization emphasizes the importance of giving back to the local community.

The group held an official kickoff event, ‘Malta Business Works Monday,’ at the Malta Community Center on May 15. Rosenberg said they are planning for two events in the fall, as well as plans to participate in Malta Community Day, Small Business Saturday, and for a holiday decoration and tree-lighting ceremony.

“What I have seen is the business community supporting the business community,” said Rosenberg. “I think it’s tremendous. I think we all have gotten to the point where we enjoy staying within the town we live in to do business, or where we’re doing business to shop also.”

SSHS Honors Class of 2023 at Commencement

Saratoga Springs High School celebrated the graduation of 492 members of the Class of 2023 on Friday, hosting its commencement ceremony at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Class president Clare Hegener, student council president Evan Griffiths, and student speakers Abigail Bundy and James O’Connell spoke during the ceremony, according to a release on the district website. Superintendent

Michael Patton, SSHS Principal Michelle Tsao, and chemistry teacher Devin Scott also spoke. The Yaddo Medals were awarded to Abigail Bundy and Jacob Munter. Each year, the prestigious Yaddo Medals are awarded to one female and one male from the graduation class who have excelled in scholarship and school citizenship, the release states. Katrina Trask began the tradition of presenting the Yaddo Medal, crafted by Tiffany & Company, in 1912.

Quinn’s great-uncle, also named Leo Quinn, was valedictorian of the St. Peter’s Academy Class of 1923, but tragically drowned four days before the ceremony. At Friday’s commencement, Quinn read his great-uncle’s original speech from 100 years prior.

Community Unites Around a Brand-New Mom with Breast Cancer

Alyssa Lewis, 29, of Mechanicville, was diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant.

It has been a harrowing ordeal for Alyssa and her husband, Dustin, compounded by the fact that cancer treatments are expensive. They have been unsure how to make it through. Now, the community has stepped up to help.

In just two weeks, they have raised $10,333 through a heartfelt GoFundMe campaign, surpassing their $10,000 goal.

WHEN THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENS

During her first trimester, Alyssa experienced slight pain and found a lump in her breast. Convinced it was harmless, she tried not to worry.

Except for awful nausea, Alyssa’s pregnancy went relatively smoothly, at first. As her breasts swelled, pain increased. She convinced herself these were normal changes until, at 37 weeks

To begin the cancer treatments as soon as possible, Alyssa was scheduled for an induction the day before her due date. There were complications. After 10 hours of labor, and with the baby’s heart-rate dropping, a C-Section was performed. On May 4th, a healthy baby girl, Harlow, 6lbs 5 oz, 19-inches, was born.

Several weeks later, imaging detected Alyssa also has a cancerous lymph node. The hormones surging through Alyssa’s body during pregnancy fed the aggressive, fast-growing Stage 2 tumor.

“The biggest thing I’m afraid of is, unfortunately, I could be losing my life, my daughter could be losing her mother, and my husband could be losing his wife,” said Alyssa.

HELP FOR TODAY, HOPE FOR TOMORROW

Today, Alyssa’s chemotherapy treatments have begun. Surgery will follow and with it, radiation, and long-term hormone therapy medications.

Unsure of how much the out-of-pocket costs for all this will amount to, Alyssa and Dustin know they are substantial. They are struggling to keep up

financially. Also, Alyssa does not have life insurance.

In addition to the typical expenses of all new parents, Harlow must be fed exclusively with formula (costs only partially covered by WIC assistance). The couple, married since 2018, also care for three cats; Mittens, Scarlet, and Xena. Medical copays and the cost of transportation for treatments are adding up.

On June 13, they launched a GoFundMe campaign. In less than three days, they reached 50% of their $10,000 goal. Within the week, they received nearly $7,500 in donations.

“We live a private life, have a small circle of friends, and aren’t on social media. That so many people would help - words can’t express what I’m feeling,” said Alyssa, adding, “It’s definitely given me a new sense of strength I didn’t have before. In the beginning, it was hard to feel that way.”

Immeasurably grateful, this support has pushed Alyssa into a place of empowerment, allowing her the grace to advocate for young

breast cancer patients like herself.

“Seeing the outpouring of support from friends, family, everyone (even strangers!) really has pushed me forward. I have a new sense of wanting to make a difference for others in my condition.”

Alyssa has joined a cancer support group, is participating in a clinical study to test the current standard of care (saving future

patients from the awful sideeffects of ineffective treatments) and is advocating for more rigorous cancer prevention measures for pregnant women.

F or many, eighty-degree weather and the end of the school year are hallmarks of summer. We plan for gatherings with family and friends, schedule vacations, and fill the calendar with activities. Ultimately, summertime hits full speed once the Fourth of July is upon us.

But sometimes, the simplest things make summer most memorable—like fresh flowers on the table, snacking on sun-ripened berries, or the smell of dinner on the grill. Time slows as we absorb natural flavors, colors, and scents straight from the earth. Summer cooking doesn’t need to be complicated—a vinaigrette of vinegar and olive oil can dress thinlysliced cucumbers, grated carrots, and crisp greens. Snap peas and tender yellow squash may be sauteed lightly with olive oil and a pinch of sea salt, maintaining their taste and crisp texture. Beets and potatoes may be boiled until soft, then sauteed with onions. Add fresh herbs for a burst of flavor.

Local meats and poultry also call for a simple preparation, as the meat’s flavor lies in its quality. For grilling cuts of beef, pork, and goat, bring the meat to ambient temperature (let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes), rub it with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and then grill. Cook meats to the proper temperature and try not to rely on time. Once cooked, cover tightly with aluminum foil and let rest for approximately five minutes. Chicken gets special treatment with a simple marinade of olive oil, garlic, herbs, and a hefty squeeze of citrus. Let it soak in the marinade for 30 minutes to 8 hours before grilling.

When entertaining or picnicking, a loaf of artisan bread paired with local cheeses can quickly satisfy a group. Add pickles, honeycomb, jam, chocolate,

crackers, or fresh fruit for an array of delectable flavors that complement one another and make for a sweet and savory summertime meal.

Beverages are always necessary for backyard barbeques or just enjoying time in your backyard. Limoncello, whiskey iced tea, and other spirits make cocktail hour easy. Or maybe Junboucha or lavender lemonade is best to quench your thirst.

Cucumber Salad with Greek Yogurt

YIELDS: 8 servings

INGREDIENTS:

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• ½ cup plain Greek yogurt*

• 3 Tablespoons white vinegar

• 1 Tablespoon sugar

• pepper to taste

• 4 medium cucumbers*, peeled and thinly sliced

• 1 small sweet onion*, thinly sliced and separated into rings

INSTRUCTIONS

:

In a large bowl, whisk the yogurt, vinegar, sugar, and pepper until blended. Add cucumbers and onion. Toss to coat. Refrigerate, covered for at least 4 hours.

NOTE: The original recipe calls for sour cream in place of yogurt.

Hello my Foodie Friends!

This 4th of July weekend celebration will include attending fireworks, parades, barbeques, carnivals, picnics, baseball games, and family gatherings. The Fourth of July is more than just a celebration of summertime — it’s a time to celebrate our freedom and how far we have come. Many families will be hosting or attending an outside event or taking advantage of the long weekend activities.

Fireworks have always been one of my favorite parts of celebrating our national holiday. Sitting in a chair and watching the spectacular color displayed is so exciting to me. As I reminisce about my childhood, there is one particular 4th of July that standouts. I love to tell my decades old story of when my two other brothers and our neighborhood buddies had acquired some fire crackers to add to our evening fun. After the firework show had ended at our local park, we still had the need to entertain ourselves and sustain the celebration. My parents were not aware that a group of us “spirited” boys still had unused fireworks in our possession. Our friends provided the fireworks and my brothers and I were given the task of getting a pan to cover the fire crackers with. I gave this “heroic” opportunity to my youngest brother instructing on spy-like maneuvers to quietly get the pan past my mother. Looking back, I am not sure how we actually were able to pull it off getting it past her. We found a quiet corner in our yard to set up. Anxiously, we lit several fire crackers and put a

Red, White & Blue Berry Fruit Tart

INGREDIENTS

• 3 cups walnuts and almonds, (you can use pecans and hazelnuts as well)

• 5 Tablespoons unsalted butter

• 8 dates, soaked in hot water for 5 minutes, then pit

• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

• 2 8-ounce bars cream cheese, at room temperature

• 1 cup lemon curd (8 ounces) at room temperature

• Assorted fresh fruit

• 1 loose-bottomed fluted tart pan 2 inches deep

• 2 Tablespoons Apricot jam,

• 2 Tablespoons water

pan on top of them. Well, that pan shot so high in the sky, it landed in my father’s favorite red maple tree and stayed there until the following winter. One winter afternoon my father was looking out the kitchen window wondering what was lodged in his tree. Getting the pan down was an event in itself. However, cleaning it was another. In an attempt to teach the three of us adorable boys a lesson, we were ordered to get the pan back to its “original” shape and color. We never did get that pan back to its normal shape!!

Outdoor gatherings were always something I looked forward to. Especially, when looking at the vast number of dishes and desserts that will be spread out. Whether it is a picnic gathering, or a simple picnic at the park, no feast would be complete without a sweet treat at the end. A simple way to satisfy the sweet tooth, is with a fruitladened tart. It is a wonderful treat to add with wine or even a cup of tea. Fresh fruit tarts are a beautiful way to present a dessert. The secret lies in the pan that the tart is baked in. A tart pan has low, fluted sides with a removable bottom. The

design of the pan allows for a better conduction of heat making a more uniform baked crust. The removable bottom enables you to remove the finished product by easily placing your hand beneath the bottom, and letting the outer ring fall. Tart pans come in a number of sizes to suite whatever you are making. They are also known as quiche pans.

Ahhh…I love summer. Being outdoors and enjoying fun times with family and friends (safely) creates those memories that last a lifetime. INSTRUCTIONS

1. Soak dates in hot or warm water 5 minutes, then pit.

2. In a food processor, fitted with blade, pulse nuts, butter, dates and salt until a dough forms.

3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Press dough into a greased tart pan with removable bottom. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until crust is golden.

4. In a clean processor bowl, process the cream cheese and lemon curd and spread it into the bottom of the chilled tart crust, covering the base evenly.

5. Arrange the fruit gently (so it doesn’t sink in too much) on top of the lemony cream cheese.

6. Refrigerator the tart, preferably overnight, or for at least 4 hours. It does need to get properly cold in order to set enough for the tart to be unmolded and sliced easily.

7. For the glaze: mix 2 Tablespoons apricot jam and 2 Tablespoons water in a small sauce pan and cook over low heat, stirring until jam is melted and thin enough to brush over fruit. Add more water if necessary.

Opera Saratoga 2023 Summer Festival Opens This Weekend

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Opera Saratoga’s 2023 Summer Festival Lineup will staged June 30 to July 9 at Universal Preservation Hall. The three summer offerings, the madcap Tony-award winning musical, “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” the classic comic bel canto opera “Don Pasquale” and the world premiere of Clarice Assad and Lila Palmer’s family opera “The Selfish Giant.”  Showtimes, all at UPH on Washington Street, are:

Single Tickets on Sale for Two Capital Repertory Theatre 23-24 Subscription Shows

ALBANY — Single tickets for “What the Constitution Means to Me” and “Million Dollar Quartet Christmas” are on sale. Both shows are part of Capital Repertory Theatre’s 23-24 subscription

season. Subscriptions, which include “Sweat,” “Three Mothers,” Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” as well as a cross-venue show at Proctors, are still available.

“What the Constitution

Means to Me,” by Heidi Schreck, will be at the REP Sept. 15 – Oct. 8. The smash Broadway hit kicks off the new season at theREP with a special production.

“Million Dollar Quartet Christmas,” by Colin Escott, will be at theREP Nov. 24 – Dec. 24. Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley come together again to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. Sun Records, donned with Christmas tree, garland and mistletoe, rings with the sounds of the season and the chart toppers that made the four famous. Each show will feature certain special nights throughout their runs, including a post-show champagne toast on opening night, Chef’s Table featuring local restaurants, an ASL performance, Thirsty Thursday and a pre-show behind-the-scenes presentation. Tang Museum: Upbeat on the Roof Summer Concert Series Kicks-Off

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College has announced its line-up for the Upbeat On The Roof series.

The long-running Thursday night concert series is presented July 6 through August 17. Concerts are staged on the grounds of the Tang.

Attendees are invited to bring chairs, blankets, and picnics. Music starts at 6 pm.

UPH Announces First Rainbow Prom in Support of the Local LGBTQIA+ Community

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Proctors Collaborative will be hosting its first Rainbow Prom at Universal Preservation Hall in September, when the LGBTQIA+ community and allies ages 16+ are invited to commemorate a prom night in a safe, inclusive space. Photographers will capture the memories as everyone dances the night away to popular music from the 80s, 90s, 00s and today. The event takes place 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 30 at UPH in Saratoga Springs.

UPH is also asking participants to post their promposals on Instagram with the hashtag #UPHRainbowProm for a chance to win a free drink voucher.

X-Files 30th Anniversary Fan Fest July 7-8 at The X-Files Museum in Saratoga Springs

Actor Brian Thompson will make an appearance at this year’s The X-Files 30th Anniversary Fan Fest in Saratoga Springs July 7 - 8.

This year’s Fan Fest will take place at both The X-Files Preservation Collection (4284

Route 50) and the Saratoga Springs City Center with a lineup of X-Files celebrities.

Thompson can currently be seen with Denzel Washington, in Joel Cohen and Fran Mc Dormand’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” on Apple TV, as well

as episodes of 911, where he portrays the less codling fire captain Vincent Gerard.

X Files proved life-changing for Thompson as well for event producer as Jim Thornton, whose X-Files obsession inspired a decades-long search for the items

that now make up The X-Files Preservation Collection and Collectibles, the official name of the museum.

Yaddo Gardens Open to The Public: New Hours & Days of Operation

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Yaddo is preparing for the summer season with new public programming on offer in the Gardens.

The entrance to the Yaddo artists’ colony now bears a new gate. The Gardens portion of the compound is open to the public Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well as Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The gates will be closed on Fridays. The gate is intended to help keep access roads open for artists in residence as well as for fire and

emergency vehicles.

The Gardens, which opened earlier this month, will remain open through Sunday, Oct. 15. Limited parking is available at the entrance to the Gardens.

The public is also invited to attend The Art of Wellness, a series of Yoga classes held in the Gardens on select Sundays through September. RSVP at: yaddo.org/ event/the-art-of-wellness.

The Yaddo Summer Benefit - “An Evening Under the Stars” - was staged June 22 on the grounds of the fabled arts colony on Union Avenue.

This year’s program featured a silent auction, a musical performance by Yaddo 2020

and 2022 artists-in-residence

The Lazours, and was chaired by Candace Wait.

Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and food stations were created by Chef Tim Brockmon and the Yaddo culinary team for approximately 350 guests in attendance.

The Summer Benefit raises about $180,000 for Yaddo’s artist residency programming. For more information about Yaddo, go to: yaddo.org.

‘God knew what I needed’: Eowyn Lapp Overcomes Adversity On Path to the Next Level

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Local student-athlete Eowyn Lapp is gaining valuable experience ahead of her college soccer career, playing with the New York Shockers of the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

She is committed to play at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, a member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference. But for Lapp, it was quite the journey to get there.

Lapp said her dream was to play at a Division 1 school, but back-to-back injuries caused her to miss a significant amount of time during the recruitment process. While it was a long road back, Lapp eventually found a new home, a new major, and a new mindset along the way.

Lapp, who was homeschooled, has played for the Saratoga-Wilton Soccer Club since age nine, and also played for Hudson Valley Rocks, a team for homeschooled students.

In the fall of her junior year, Lapp was participating in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program and was preparing to visit camps at colleges around the country.

However, a bad bounce caused things to change quickly. During a game that December, Lapp suffered an eye injury that caused her to miss six weeks of play.

“I shot a ball while a girl was trying to clear it, and my shot hit her foot, and went straight into my

eye,” said Lapp. “It caused internal bleeding. It was really bad.”

Then, less than a month after recovering from the eye injury, Lapp tore her ACL while skiing at her job at West Mountain.

“I just went across ice, slipped. … My knee just twisted a little bit, and I felt a pull,” Lapp said. “I was like, ‘That’s my ACL.’ I knew it.”

As a result of the injury, Lapp missed a majority of the Saratoga-Wilton season and all of her senior year with Hudson Valley. After undergoing surgery, Lapp began a lengthy and difficult rehab process, including physical therapy “every day,” she said.

“I was very committed to doing it, because I wanted to get back in six months,” Lapp said.

Lapp said her physical therapist was “amazing,” and said she spent significant time asking questions about the process.

“I had a lot of questions, and I figured the more I know, the better I could help myself recover,” said Lapp. “That was my original intent of learning more, but then I just kind of got curious.”

Originally considering something like English or history as a college major, Lapp’s experiences with physical therapy eventually inspired her to find what will be her future major: exercise science.

“I just wanted to learn more, because it was cool to me,” Lapp said. “This was in the realm that I wanted to be for jobs, and I really enjoyed learning about it.”

Lapp was still hoping to join a

Division 1 program, but a chance connection ended up leading her to her future home and team.

Chris and Cay Hanley, friends of the Lapp family, both attended Gordon College, a Division III school in Massachusetts. Lapp said that Cay Hanley reached out to Chuck Breton, the Gordon women’s soccer coach, to see if he would contact Lapp to offer encouragement.

But Breton ended up viewing Lapp’s highlight videos, she said, and later reached out to her as a recruit. They shared an initial phone call, which included Lapp’s parents and ended up lasting two hours.

“We had a really good call, and he was just really easy to talk to, really fun to talk to,” Lapp said. “It was just really enjoyable.”

Shortly after, Breton offered Lapp a spot on the Fighting Scots’ roster, she said. Breton also invited her to attend Gordon’s ID camp despite her injury, allowing her to meet the team and experience the Gordon campus for the first time.

Lapp said she ultimately felt that Gordon became “the obvious choice.”

“It just really felt like God knew what I needed, and I didn’t know what I needed,” Lapp said. “It was really cool, finally opening my heart up, and realizing that what God has for me is so much better than what I have for me.”

Now recovered from the ACL injury, Lapp has been preparing to begin her college career. In addition to playing with

Saratoga-Wilton, Lapp joined the Shockers, a team made up primarily of other collegiate players. The Shockers are members of the WPSL and play home games at Afrim’s Sports Park in Colonie.

In preparation for the Shockers’ season, and in addition to practicing with her SWSC team, Lapp also participated in practices with the SaratogaWilton boys U18 team, which she said was “so amazing.”

“I’m so thankful for that,” said Lapp. “I had a great time, and it was really what I needed. … That was really great. I practiced with them quite a bit in addition to my team.”

Lapp cracked the starting lineup in her first game with the Shockers, she said, helping the team earn a 2-0 victory over the Kingston Capitals.

“It was just a great first game,”

said Lapp. “We have a couple more games. I’m just excited to see where it takes me.”

She offered thanks to her coaches through the years, including Saratoga-Wilton coaches Kemp Bundy and A.J. Siebeneck, and Shockers’ head coach Kurtis Smith, among others.

Lapp said that ultimately, “a whole lot of good came out of” her experience, which she mainly attributed to being able to maintain a positive mentality.

“I had viewed my mentality as my nemesis, like, ‘My mentality is what messes me up,’” Lapp said. “I didn’t realize that if I learned how to control my mentality, that can be one of my biggest assets. That was one of the biggest things that came out of this injury, just knowing my mentality can be one of my strengths, it doesn’t have to be my nemesis.”

EUGENE, OREGON —

Ballston Spa junior standout Harriet Healey went west on June 15, competing at the 2023 Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon.

Healey placed sixth in 400-meters in the Emerging Elites division, with a time of 57.35

seconds. She also placed 26th in the Championship division 400meter hurdles, with a time of 1:06.44 seconds.

On Saturday, June 10, Healey won the NYSPHSAA Division 1 state championship in the 400meter hurdles, with a time of 1:02.01 seconds.

BALLSTON SPA GRADUATES EARN NYS CIVIC READINESS SEAL

BALLSTON SPA — Ballston Spa High School presented over 185 seniors in the Class of 2023 with a NYS Seal of Civic Readiness as part of commencement activities. BSHS Interim Principal Richard Murphy indicated, “The Seal allows us to recognize the successes our students are having and will continue to have in the field of Social Studies and civic engagement.”

Students earn points for their successful completion of the four years of core Social Studies classes required by NYSED. Many earn additional points for the completion of advanced coursework in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and/or College in the High School Social Studies classes. Students also earn points toward the Seal by completing various Social Studies based electives.

“The Seal of Civic Readiness is designed to help students better understand the governmental world in which they live in as nonpolitical a way as possible,” said High School Instructional Teacher Leader Heather Mazurowski. “Students, regardless of their point of view, need to graduate from high school ready to be active participants in our democracy and understand the institutions and issues which we face.”

It is the goal of Ballston Spa High School to help each student have a possible pathway to earning the diploma Seal as the program moved from the previous pilot stage to full implementation in 2022-23. The district will now look to add a Middle School Capstone project and a High School Capstone project in future years.
