“Saratoga Naturally” - Photographic Images on Exhibit at Thirsty Owl

SARATOGA SPRINGS—

A new exhibition featuring photographic images of Saratoga is on exhibit at The Thirsty Owl Bistro, 184 S. Broadway.

The exhibition, “Saratoga Naturally: Photographic Images of Saratoga’s Most Beautiful Parks & Preserves,” is created by self-published authorphotographer and Saratoga Springs resident Louis Valenti.

Photographic images on

display include: Saratoga Spa State Park; Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery; Geyser Creek Trail; Bog Meadow Brook Nature Trail; and the Saratoga National Historical Park and Battlefield.

The event is open to the public and free of charge Monday through Sunday, 11:30

a.m. – 9 p.m. and will be on display through Sunday, June 15.

Annual Wildlife Festival at Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park June 2

WILTON — Wilton

Wildlife will be hosting its Annual Wildlife Festival at the Historic Camp Saratoga on Scout Road in Wilton from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sunday, June 2.

The free event will feature Karner blue butterfly information, lupine planting, food trucks, live animals, nature crafts, face painting, pond exploration, and hands-on fun. The event is timed to enjoy the beauty of the first brood of Karner blue butterflies and the blooming wild blue lupine. Activities will take place throughout Camp Saratoga to encourage people to explore the wonderful trail system, since the

Wildlife Festival is a registered National Trails Day event.

During the festival, native raptors will be presented by the Trish Marki of Silent Wings, sponsored by Ballston Spa National Bank. There will be live turtles at the turtle discovery table.

There will be lupine planting and a Karner blue butterfly information table to help visitors learn about the Saratoga Sand Plains Habitat Restoration area.

Educators from Wilton Wildlife will share information about the efforts that New York State DEC and The Nature Conservancy have made in improving and increasing the habitat for this

endangered species. There will be numerous craft activities taking place in locations around Camp Saratoga. The Wildlife Festival will take place rain or shine with many of the activities moving under cover of Camp Saratoga’s many pavilions, the dining hall and the Winter Lodge in case of rainy weather. Organizers encourage people to carpool, bike, blade, walk, or share rides with others since parking is limited.

Adirondack Experience To Open For 2024 Season

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE

— Adirondack Experience (ADKX) will open on May 24 for the 2024 season, inspiring visitors to learn and connect with all-things Adirondack, past and present.

In addition to its expansive list of ongoing daily offerings, several new works of art –including, Cosmic Portal, a complex sculptural piece that measures 9’ by 6’ – will be on display in Artists & Inspiration in the Wild, which debuted in July 2023.

This year also marks

the 100th anniversary of the completion of the NorthvillePlacid Trail (NPT), a 138mile route that transverses Adirondack Park. To honor this milestone, the museum will launch its newest special exhibition, Trail Makers: 100 Years of the NorthvillePlacid Trail and offer daily programming and opportunities to connect hikers, history buffs, and those who simply treasure the region to come together to mark this anniversary in a personal way.

ADKX will also introduce

Tuesday Trail Talks & Tours, a new monthly series to learn about the people who hike, maintain, and work to preserve the Northville-Placid Trail today. Saratoga Ranked Third Most Popular Boating

Destination in New York

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Getmyboat, a marketplace for boat charters and rentals, ranked Saratoga Springs the third most popular boating destination in New York State. Saratoga was also listed as the most popular boating city outside of the New York metropolitan area.

The top five New York

boating locations were, in order: Manhattan, Sag Harbor, Saratoga Springs, Bay Shore, and Oyster Bay. Schenectady cracked the top ten at number eight.

Getmyboat used its booking and demand data to compile the 2024 rankings. According to the company, the average hourly rate for a boat rental in Saratoga is $145, and the average total trip price is $891. Pontoons are the Spa City’s most popular style of boat.

Animal Protective Foundation to Hold 3rd Annual WOOFSTOCK June 2

GLENVILLE — The Animal Protective Foundation (APF) announced the return of the Woofstock Music Festival to the Mohawk Harbor Amphitheater in Schenectady on Sunday, June 2.

All proceeds of all-day petfriendly music festival will go towards the APF’s ongoing mission to provide medical care, housing, food, and lifesaving support for companion animals in need.

The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with an optional 5K run/Walka-thon (includes free admission to Woofstock), followed by live music at 11 a.m. with local favorites 20 Ninety Six (2096) and the Donna Tritico Band.

Over 40 vendors will also be on-site with pet-friendly and focused shopping, food and drink.

Lewis E. Bent

EASTON, NY— Lewis E. Bent, 89, was born on July 29, 1934, and passed away on May 14, 2024. Lewie was born, raised, and lived in Vermont for a number of years and later moved to his longtime home in Corinth. Lewie had many talents, and he was able to work in a variety of fields. He was a combat medic in Korea, a farmer, a logger, and a trucker, to name a few. His favorite job was cross-country trucking with his co-driver and wife Mary. Together they traveled the county in their big rig and shared the wild tales of their life on the road with everyone.

Lewie was known for his colorful personality and quick wit. One of his favorite sayings was “if you can’t joke and fool then life ain’t worth livin’ .” He loved the outdoors and could tell you how to save a hive of honeybees, tame a squirrel, plant a tree, or catch a fish. He also loved a good party, a cold beer, and two fingers of Black Velvet with ginger ale. He was

known for steaming hundreds of clams for the many people who attended his annual Labor Day party on the Mountain. He also loved his family and was proud of each one of them.

Lewie was predeceased by his wife Mary, his sons Mike Bent and David Gregorek, his granddaughter Kristen Gregorek, and his mother Louise Bent. He was also the last of his siblings to be born and the last to pass. Lewie leaves behind his nine remaining children whom he loved, whether they were his by birth or marriage. He will also be remembered by his family “in-law” which included daughters and sons, sisters and brothers, and so many others. Lewie had so many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will surely carry fond and fun memories of him through their lives.

Ann K. Gregg (LeVay)

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Ann K. Gregg (LeVay) was born on May 26, 1932 in New York City, and passed on May 14, 2024, surrounded by her family who loved her and whom she loved so much.

Ann was raised in Woodhaven, NY. She worked in NYC as a secretary until she started her family. Ann married John J. Gregg (Jack) on September 29, 1957. They moved to Saratoga Springs with their family in 1971. They were happily married for 39 years until Jack’s death in 1996.

Ann was known for her kind heart and generous spirit and was always willing to help people in need and always rooting for the underdog. Ann believed in living a simple life, enjoying family and friends and all the small blessings.

Ann considered her friends a blessing in her life. People loved her honest assessments, her no nonsense approach to life and her good humor and ability to laugh, especially at herself.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Brookwood Road in the Town of Halfmoon to assist the town Code Enforcement Department. It was found that a large number of canines were living in deplorable conditions at that location. Derrick J. SudNieves, 29, of Halfmoon, was subsequently arrested and charged with 35 counts of NYS Agriculture and Markets Law, section 353 –Overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; failure to provide proper sustenance. Sud-Nieves was processed at the Halfmoon station and released with an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to appear in Halfmoon Town Court at a later date. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the Town of Halfmoon Code Enforcement, Clifton Park Animal Control and the Humane Society. The animals were seized from the residence and are currently in the care of the Humane

Society. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may follow.

Following an investigation into an incident that reportedly occurred in 2020 in the town of Greenfield, Logan M. Andreadakis, 25, of Queensbury, was arrested and charged with rape in the 2nd degree (class D felony) and sexual abuse in the 3rd degree (class B misdemeanor). Andreadakis is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a then 14-year-old female who was known to him. He was arraigned before Michael Ginley in the Greenfield Town Court and released to pretrial services pending further action in the matter.

Todd A. Axton, 61, of Ballston, was sentenced to 8 months incarceration in the Saratoga County Correctional Facility, after pleading to aggravated criminal contempt, a felony, charged October 2022.

Lewis Labshere, 34, of Schenectady, was sentenced to 1-1/2 to 3 years incarceration in a state correctional facility after pleading to criminal contempt in the first-degree, charged February 2024 in Galway.

Jay A, Sherman, 35, of South Glens Falls, was sentenced to time served and 5 years of probation, after pleading to felony DWI, charged August 2023 in Moreau.

Hasan A. Stubbs, 26, of Ballston Spa, pleaded to grand larceny in the fourth-degree, a felony, charged in Halfmoon. Sentencing July 11.

Justin W. Cummings, 37, of porter Corners, was sentenced to 2 years incarceration in a state correctional facility, followed by 2 years postrelease supervision, after pleading to criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third-degree, charged April 2023 in Ballston Spa.

Joseph D. Freshwater, 30, of Saratoga Springs, was

sentenced to 3 years incarceration in a state correctional facility and 10 years post-release supervision, after pleading to sexual abuse in the first-degree, charged August 2023 in Saratoga Springs.

John J. Dominy, 53, of Albany, was sentenced to 1-1/2 to 3 years incarceration in a state

correctional facility, after pleading to grand larceny in the fourth-degree, charged June 2023 in Wilton.

Leon Carney, 20, of Lake George, pleaded to disseminating indecent material to minors in the first-degree, charged in Saratoga March 2023. Sentencing July 10.

— More than 500 care packages were assembled for local troops serving overseas. The event involved a collaboration between Suburban Propane Partners and Operation Adopt A Soldier and included letters written by Suburban Propane employees from across the region, snacks, games, and other necessities that will serve as a reminder of home and a symbol of gratitude for their service.

“Operation Adopt A Soldier is an all-volunteer, not for profit 501c3 organization with a goal to raise and maintain awareness to the American people of the day to day sacrifices our military men and women and their families make to protect our freedoms,” Cliff Seguin, Founder and Chairman, Operation Adopt A Soldier, said in a statement. “In 2023, we mailed

Carole Jean Smith

WILTON — Carole Jean Smith of Gansevoort, formerly of Clifton, NJ died on May 13, 2024. Born in 1952, she was predeceased by her parents, Joan and Donald Smith, as well as her beloved horse, Jesse. She is survived by her two sisters, Janet Howe (Ben) and Dale Smith Hofmann (Patrick). In addition, Carole’s three nephews Matthew, Michael, and James Howe, as well as her niece Rachel Howe (Peter Zendt) and their three children survive her.

Carole had a photographic memory and from an early age played the piano and taught herself the guitar. She was the accompaniment to many songfests around campfires in her youth. As a remarkable saleswoman, she was the deciding force in helping people make successful purchases to address their needs. Carole loved animals and had four cats and a horse, whom

she loved dearly. She supported organizations that tended animals and used her knowledge of technology to help locate lost pets. Her sense of humor was quick and wry, a trait that she especially loved in her father.

Committed to the Saratoga County community, she leaves many friends and their families with fond memories. This was not an easy parting for them, but her fondness for the area is reflected in the outpouring of support that people have offered her family. Saugerties was Carole’s go-to place for additional family, and she deeply grieved for the passing of her beloved Uncle David in 2023. She continued her connection with the family through his daughters, Cathy and Julie Snoddy.

Public Event May 29 to Celebrate New Exhibits, Extensive Upgrades to Battlefield Tour Road

STILLWATER — One of the most historic landscapes in the country has recently seen the completion of the $6 million Battlefield Tour Road Improvement Project.

The large-scale construction project in Saratoga National Historical Park, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) Legacy Restoration Fund, focused on making upgrades and increasing accessibility of parking areas, trailheads, walkways, seating, signage, exhibits and viewing areas along the popular 10-mile-long route.

A celebration to mark the project’s completion will take place at Tour Stop 2 (Neilson’s Farm) at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29.

The public is invited to join partners, people and

stakeholders who made this project possible. The ceremony will be followed by opportunities to explore the battlefield and speak with park staff at Tour Stop 2, Tour Stop 6 (Freeman’s Farm) and Tour Stop 10 (Return to Saratoga).

As the country approaches the upcoming 250th anniversary commemorations of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 and of the Battles of Saratoga in 2027, the improvements will provide visitors with a better understanding of the battles and their vital role in securing American independence. Prior to the project, the Tour Road and its 10 tour stops, which are the primary way that most people visit the historic battlefield grounds, had been largely unchanged for nearly 50 years.

A boot and a two-star epaulet are draped over a howitzer barrel to symbolize an individual with the rank of Major General who suffered a wound during a battle in this location. The monument does not mention Gen. Benedict Arnold by name.

“Epic Failure”: Malta Town Board Addresses Steeplechase Apartments Fire Code Violations

MALTA — The Malta Town Board held a public hearing on Monday night regarding fire code violations at the Steeplechase apartments. The violations, first noted in May of 2022, were initially supposed to have been addressed by September 2022. Representatives from Steeplechase said the violations were still being addressed as of May 2024. They also said

they didn’t know if residents had ever been notified of the violations.

The hearing resulted in some heated exchanges, including Councilperson Al Ricci repeatedly referring to the unaddressed violations as an “epic failure,” and Councilperson Barbara Conner telling a Steeplechase representative that she didn’t understand how they could live with themselves.

Special counsel Stefanie Bitter said that after the initial May 2022 inspection report, the town followed up with

Steeplechase at least four times in 2022 and 2023. In August 2023, a second inspection noted 104 deficiencies that affected 235 residential units.

In November 2023, a fire marshal issued an order to remedy the violations and gave Steeplechase thirty days to do so.

A property manager at the apartment complex later said she was aware of the violations and was working to address them. As of the hearing on Monday night, only six of the complex’s twenty-four buildings had completed the remedial work.

The primary safety issue, said Malta Code Enforcement

Officer Greg Berg, was unlisted antifreeze systems within the buildings, which can become flammable and, under certain conditions, could cause an explosion.

“It’s like playing with grandpa’s old World War II hand grenade and someone says it’s been defused. I’m not pulling the pin,” Berg said.

Attorney Jennifer Yetto, representing Steeplechase, said the company had contracted a vendor to complete the necessary work in the remaining buildings by the end of August. “Contrary to what the town may have noted,” Yetto said, “we very much are concerned with our residents

as much as anyone else.” Yetto criticized town officials for poor communication. She also refused to concede any of the violations.

“We’re very well aware this had been prejudged well before we even walked into the door,” Yetto told Councilperson Ricci.

“It seems like a lot more effort has gone into the defense of the procedure than it has to fix.. the problems of the building,” Ricci said.

The hearing was adjourned with the understanding that Steeplechase had hired a vendor and would address the remaining violations by the end of August.

144 Residential Units Planned in Ballston Spa

BALLSTON SPA — This June, residents can begin moving into The Estates at Ballston Spa, an apartment complex located a little less than two miles from the village’s downtown. The apartments are the first phase of a planned three-pronged

project that would ultimately create 144 residential units.

Phase one is finishing

The Estates at 1419 Saratoga Road, which will include two buildings; one with 24 units and another with 40 units. The luxury apartments are all 2 and 3 bedrooms, with monthly rent prices starting at $1,875.

According to Paul Nichols, co-developer of the project,

about half of the 24-unit building has already been rented, with a handful more units reserved in the 40-unit building.

Phase two involves building 28 modern farmhousestyle townhomes in the rear of the property. The homes are currently awaiting town approval. If approval is granted, Nichols said that land for the homes could start being cleared this fall.

The final phase of the project entails constructing three additional three-story, mixed-use buildings with another 52 apartments; plus 25,000 square feet of retail and amenity space on the first floor.

“The location itself is really the gateway to Ballston Spa. We found that very appealing,” Nichols said. “We’ve always liked downtown Ballston Spa. It’s quaint with its shops and restaurants, and we think it’s just a great place to live.”

Paragon Residential Management is developing the project alongside general contractor BDC Builders.

Saratoga County Unemployment Rate Increases

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

According to data from the New York State Labor Department, 4,200 Saratoga County residents were unemployed as of March 2024, putting the county’s unemployment rate at 3.5%.

In March of 2023, 3,500 of the county’s 121,600-member

workforce (or 2.9%) were unemployed, meaning the unemployment increased by 0.6% in the past year.

There have been similar upticks in unemployment in nearby cities, such as Albany (0.6% increase), Schenectady (0.7%), and Glens Falls (0.7%).

New York State’s overall unemployment rate as of March was 4.3%.

— The Saratoga Automobile Museum’s 8th Annual Motorcar Auction added two consignments last week: a 1982 Ferrari 512 BBI and a 1994 Ferrari 512 TR.

The 1982 Ferrari 512 BBI features sleek lines, a powerful Flat-12 boxer engine, and an original red exterior with a restored tan leather interior. The 1994 Ferrari 512 TR is the 512 BBI’s successor, and features a top speed of 195mph with original exterior and interior. The car is probably best known for being featured in both the hit TV series “Miami Vice,” and the 1994 video game “Need for Speed.”

“These iconic vehicles embody the spirit and and represent the rich heritage of

the Ferrari brand,” said Bill Windham, Auction Director of the Saratoga Automobile Museum, in a statement.

Kids Just Being Kids in the Great Outdoors

In today’s over-structured world where kids spend a big part of their days looking at electronics, the one thing most grade school parents agree on is when school is out, they want their kids out… in the great outdoors. When summer comes, the pressure is on for parents to adequately entertain them without overscheduling or breaking the bank. The Town of Green eld’s summer day camp is a perfect solution, with its morning-only format and a full array of traditional activities that promise to leave children exhausted and happy.

Campers spend 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. at the Maple Avenue Middle School, at 515 Maple Avenue in Saratoga Springs. Activities include rotating stations of fun, featuring such things as obstacle courses, hiking, Taekwondo, arts and crafts, as well as many organized games and sports like soccer, ag football, kickball and more. Campers participate in themed days like “Super Hero” and “Hat” Day and painting, tiedying and rock climbing. They receive weekly visits from Uncharted Wild LLC to encounter live wild animals, regularly scheduled “Water Days” for splashing around and even the chance to pal around with some local llamas. Rainy day activities bring the children inside to the school’s gymnasium and cafeteria. Fridays end each week

on a sweet note with treats from ice cream trucks and Stewart’s Shops.

“Our ever-changing schedule will send kids home exhausted and dirty from an action-packed morning at camp with friends,” said Town of Green eld Recreation Director Jennifer Zeisler.

Students ages 5 to 14 are welcome and will be supervised with a 2:10 counselor/camper ratio. The camp features 25 trained camp counselors, most of whom once attended this camp themselves.

Parents can choose early drop o for an additional cost and all students are eligible for the town’s Free Lunch Program, daily on-site.

Maple Leaf Childcare Center in Malta Has License Suspended Due to Safety Concerns

MALTA — The New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) suspended the license of the Maple Leaf Childcare Center at 2737 Route 9 in Malta last week due to “evidence that the public health or a child’s safety or welfare is in imminent danger.”

The center can end the suspension one of two ways; either they can resolve the issues cited by OCFS as the reasons for the suspension, or they can successfully challenge the decision to suspend the license. OCFS can also decide to revoke the center’s license completely.

The childcare center’s

OCFS inspection history over the last two years contained a number of alleged violations, including the use of corporal punishment, children left without competent supervision, and staff members unable to fulfill their responsibilities. Since April 17, 2023, the OCFS recorded nine substantiated complaints against Maple Leaf in Malta.

In the violations, OCFS defined corporal punishment as “punishment inflicted directly on the body including, but not limited to, physical restraint, spanking, biting, shaking, slapping, twisting or squeezing; demanding excessive physical exercise, prolonged lack of movement or motion, or strenuous or bizarre postures; and compelling a child to eat or have in the

child’s mouth soap, foods, hot spices or irritants or the like.”

The company also faced scrutiny in April of this year, when a former employee at their Halfmoon location was

arrested and charged with child endangerment and harassment.

Maple Leaf did not respond to requests for comment from Saratoga TODAY.

SPAC Education Celebrates Success; Malta Ave Kids Perform at Venue

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) celebrated recent education initiatives during its annual meeting on the amphitheater stage on May 16. The event

was followed by a spirited performance of Des’ree’s hit song “You Gotta Be” by dozens of Malta Ave Elementary students.

Dennis Moench, Vice President of Education at SPAC, said that educational programming in 2023 reached an estimated 50,000 kids, in partnership with more than 120 local schools and nonprofits.

Last year, SPAC launched its “Access the Arts” program, which provides weekly dance, music, and improvisational theater classes to individuals enrolled in day habilitation programs. The program culminated with a performance featuring more than 100 participants on May 1 in the Spa Little Theater.

“We provide avenues for emotional expression, self discovery, social connection, cognitive development, stress reduction, and empowerment,” Moench said. “We believe that all individuals should have access to these benefits.”

Beginning at 2 p.m. on June 2, SPAC will host the seventh annual Adirondack Trust Company Festival of Young Artists, a free event featuring fine art displays, poetry slams, and food stands. At 4:30 p.m., hundreds of kids will present a concert on the amphitheater stage with productions that combine music, song, poetry, visual art, and dance.

Skidmore Holds 2024 Commencement at SPAC School Board and Budget Election Results

Residents of the Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa, and Schuylerville school districts voted on school budgets and board members on Tuesday, May 21. Unofficial results were reported by the districts the following morning. All three districts had their proposed 2024-2025 budgets approved by voters.

SARATOGA SPRINGS

Saratoga Springs City School District residents approved the proposed $148,709,136 school budget for 2024-2025 by a vote of 3,150 to 781. The bus bond proposition was also approved, by a vote of 3,102 to 823.

Three candidates were elected to the Board of Education: Deb Amory, Matt Kopans, and Connie Woytowich. Vote totals are listed below.

Mom Prom Raises Nearly $53K

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— The Saratoga Mom Prom raised $52,800 for the Saratoga County Children’s Committee last month, making it the most successful event in its ten-year history.

Proceeds will go to helping the committee support children locally through programs

and partnerships with other agencies, nonprofits, schools, and social workers. The prom has raised and donated $190,000 in the last nine years, and awarded $15,500 in school scholarships.

The Saratoga Mom Prom is described as a women’s night out filled with tacky dresses,

dancing, and activities all in the name of charity.

The Saratoga County Children’s Committee is a volunteer organization that provides more than 1,000 children each year with emergency and basic needs, school supplies, clothing, holiday gifts, and more.

At Longlesson Farm, you can shop for beef and pork products. “Sirloin steak is an excellent option,” says Christophe, the farm owner. “It’s a versatile cut—grill whole or make kabobs to feed a crowd.” For kabobs, Christophe recommends bringing the steak to ambient temperature, cubing it, and marinating it in olive oil, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper for one hour. Pair with your favorite grilled vegetables.

May-K-Mark offers beef, pork, and veal products, and Ariel shares her grilling favorites. “Steaks are always great, but I love hot and sweet Italian sausage. We have veal chorizo and bratwurst that can feed a lot of people. And shaved sliced steak on the grill is clutch on busy dinner nights.”

Hepatica Farm brings pasture-raised chicken, and Melanie’s absolute favorite is grilled chicken breast bone-in. “Bone-in prevents the meat from drying out, and the breast is flavorful and juicy,” she explains. “Thighs are also delicious, and our packs of drumsticks are a great value.” Melanie’s go-to marinade is lemon, rosemary, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper, and a little tamari. At Grazin’ Acres, Nate and Meghan have pork, chicken, and beef products. “Pork chops are

always great and easy with salt, pepper, garlic, and oil,” says Nate. “Rib eye or NY strip steaks are other really good options. One of our family favorites is a whole chicken, halved and grilled slow and low at 200 degrees, and the chicken is juicy and just falls apart.”

Squash Villa Farm has simmering chicken and goat. Co-owner Himanee highly recommends rib chops and loin chops. “They are really easy to grill. Sear the meat and set the grill temperature to low to cook through. You can use a marinade or rub, but salt, pepper, and olive oil allow the flavor to shine.”

The Mushroom Shop LLC offers various mushrooms for vegetarian and plant-based grilling, and Elise recommends flavorful oyster mushrooms. “They are really easy to prepare. Just brush with your cooking oil of choice and season with salt and pepper. Grill for 8-10 minutes per side.”

• 1 large red onion *

• 1/2 cup oil

• 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

• 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce

• 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar *

• 1 tablespoon garlic powder

• 1 tablespoon honey *

• 1 teaspoon onion powder

• 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder optional for a bit of kick

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cut steak, peppers, and onion into equal-sized pieces (about 1-1.5”)

2. In a large freezer bag, combine the oil, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, honey, onion powder and chipotle powder if using.

3. Add steak and let marinate for at least one hour and up to 8 hours

4. If using wooden skewers, soak for 10 minutes before skewering your beef and vegetables.

5. Preheat the grill to medium-high.

6. Skewer your beef cubes and vegetables, alternating as you like. I try to ensure 3-5 cubes of beef per skewer, depending on how long your skewers are.

7. Place kabobs directly over the heat, cooking for 4-5 minutes before flipping and cooking another 4-5 minutes, adjusting the time to your preferred doneness.

Many conflicts occur within a household on whose turn it is to wash the dishes. I remember in my childhood, years fighting with my four other siblings on who would be assigned the chore of doing the dishes. Having grown up in a household with five children, my mother ran a tight ship and made sure all of us were assigned cleaning duties. Fighting over who was going to wash the dishes was a common occurrence even after my mother made it clear whose job it was that evening. Through the years we learned that washing the dishes did not take that long when each of us helped out. When we shared and helped each other in our household chores, we then had plenty of time to go and do what we wanted afterwards. While doing chores

INGREDIENTS

• 3 bacon slices

• 1 lb. 85% lean ground beef

• ¾ cup finely chopped Vidalia onion

• 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

• ½ tsp kosher salt

• ½ tsp cracked black pepper

• 1 cup barbecue sauce

INSTRUCTIONS

• ¼ cup light brown sugar

• 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

• 1 tablespoon smoked paprika

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon

• 2 (22-ounce) cans baked beans (such as Bush’s Bourbon and Brown Sugar Grillin’ Beans)

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place bacon slices in a single layer in a 12-inch skillet. Cook over medium-low, flipping occasionally, until browned and crisp, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer bacon to a plate lined with paper towels; reserve drippings in skillet.

2. Increase heat under skillet to medium, and add ground beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, until beef is crumbly and just browned, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat. Push beef to one side of skillet; tilt skillet to let drippings drain to empty side. Using paper towels, carefully soak up drippings; discard.

3. Return skillet to heat over medium, and add onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is softened, about 5 minutes. Add barbecue sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, paprika, and cinnamon; stir until well combined. Stir in baked beans, and bring mixture to a simmer over medium, stirring often. Pour mixture into a 2 1/2-quart baking dish.

4. Bake beans, uncovered, in preheated oven until bubbling in center, about 50 minutes. Crumble bacon evenly over top, and bake 10 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.

— Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s “The Adirondack Trust Company Festival of Young Artists” will return for its seventh annual event on Sunday, June 2 from 2 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Following the theme Rhythm – an inspirational thread woven throughout SPAC’s 2024 season – the festival will celebrate the collaborative creativity of more than 700 of the Capital Region’s brightest young dancers, musicians, singers, poets, and visual artists all in support of SPAC’s mission to provide free access to enriching arts programs for local youth.

Featuring students from local schools and organizations such as Empire State Youth Orchestra, Capital District Youth Chorale, Saratoga Springs Youth Ballet, Capital District Arts Initiative, and the SPAC School of the Arts, the afternoon will include individual pop-up performances and art displays, culminating in a largescale, coordinated production on SPAC’s stage. As part of the production, an original musical composition by festival student,

Lucia Vysohlid (Niskayuna HS, Grade 12), will premiere on the SPAC stage, performed by the ESYO Symphony Orchestra, Capital District Youth Chorale, and singers from Saratoga Springs, Schalmont, and Shenendehowa high schools.

Kicking off at 2 p.m., SPAC’s grounds will be transformed into a festive celebration and will feature individual popup performances by student ensembles from the Capital Region, fine art displays, food

stands, poetry slams, lawn games and immersive art activities, plus free ice cream provided by Stewart’s Shops. At 4:45 p.m., hundreds of young artists will gather to present a celebratory concert on SPAC’s main stage, featuring largescale productions that combine music, song, poetry, visual art, and dance.

Ballston Spa Students Win Physical Education Award

BALLSTON SPA — Six Ballston Spa Middle School students were recently presented with the Sandy Morley Physical Education

Leadership Award. The winners were selected by the PE staff for demonstrating leadership and responsibility in the PE program, being respectful

of others, making good decisions, valuing learning, staying physically active, and having a positive influence on their peers.

“You were nominated by the PE staff for these characteristics and we congratulate you on standing up for what is right, not what is always popular,” said PE Instructor Kevin Dayton in a statement. “Please keep leading the way as you always have; today, tomorrow, and into the future.”

The 8th grade students that won the award were Owen Fersch, Jeffrey Fumarola, Aiden Werner, Mackenzie Johnson, Natalie Thomas, and Haley Wiltsie.

Adirondack Thunder Advance to Conference Final

the ECHL Eastern Conference Final after defeating the Norfolk Admirals in round two of the playoffs, 4 games to 2.

The Admirals took the first two games of the series but the Thunder wouldn’t fall that easily. They won four straight games, with a combined total score of 14 to 5.

Adirondack then split the first two games of the conference final against the Florida Everblades last weekend, winning the second game in a 2-0 shutout. The next three games of the series will take place in Florida. If necessary, games six and seven will be played at home at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls on May 28 and 29.

Gavin Park Hosting Abigail Jenks Memorial Ruck Race

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Gavin Park will host the Abigail Jenks Memorial Ruck Race at 9 a.m. on Memorial Day. The 5K is in honor of all those who

died in the line of duty, especially Specialist 4th Class Abigail Jenks, a town of Wilton resident and Saratoga Springs class of 2019 graduate.

Proceeds go towards the Abigail Jenks Scholarship at Saratoga High School, awarded to graduating seniors enlisting in the military; as well as the Veterans Community Housing Coalition, a local organization that advocates for veterans seeking housing.

Tickets are available for both racers and non-racers. Racers must be prepared with either a rucksack, weighted backpack, or weighted vest. Army standard is 35 pounds. Non-racer tickets are for those who wish not to carry the extra weight. All ticket holders will receive a t-shirt.

The race will begin at the large pavilion after a prayer service, National Anthem performance, and some words from Abigail’s mother. Refreshments will be available before and after the race.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Five members of the Skidmore College baseball team and three members of the Skidmore softball team were voted to AllLiberty League teams.

Junior Zachary Leiderman was voted to the first team, and senior Ameer Hasan was

selected for the second team.

Senior Christian Giresi, junior Trey Bourque, and freshman Owen Roy all received honorable mention.

TROY — The No. 3

Ballston Spa varsity baseball team entered the Section 2 Class AA playoffs with a bang on Saturday, defeating No. 6 Columbia 8 to 2.

The win sent the Dawgs to the semifinals at the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, home of the Tri-City ValleyCats. But faced with a tough game

on Monday against No. 2

Bethlehem Central, BSpa fell short, 4 to 0. It was a rough game for the Dawgs, who finished with zero hits and two errors.

Despite the loss, the team finished with a strong 13-7 record on the season and has a large group of returning players next year. This year’s graduating seniors include Tyler Corry, Conner Garrant, Nate Gurwitz, Jake Nagengast, and Blaine Zoller.

Liberty League players, he was fifth in total hits (52) and tenth in slugging percentage (.560). Hasan, a southpaw pitcher, finished third in the league with a 3.28 ERA. He was also ninth in strikeouts with 44.

For softball, senior Grace O’Connell was named to the

first team, while senior Bernie Berner made the second team. Sophomore Elle Harrison received honorable mention.

O’Connell, an outfielder, was an offensive juggernaut this season. Among all Liberty League players, she was first in stolen bases (30), second in batting average (.454) and hits (54), third in OPS (1.047), and fourth in runs (29) and on-base percentage (.484). Berner, a utility player, posted a .950 fielding percentage for the year. She also finished with a .355 battering average and .456 on-base percentage.

GREENFIELD GIRL SCOUT SAVES TODDLER FROM DROWNING, AWARDED MEDALS

GREENFIELD — 12-yearold Amelia Juracka, a camper at Hidden Lake Girl Scout Camp, knew something was wrong when her two-yearold cousin wandered into the deep end of a swimming pool. Thanks to her water safety training, Juracka sprang into action and pulled her little cousin out of the water.

For her heroics, Juracka became one of only 27 girl scouts nationwide to receive the Girl Scout Medal of

Honor. Last week, she was also awarded the New York State Senate Liberty Medal, the Senate’s highest honor. Juracka is one of the youngest people in state history to receive the award.

“I am proud to present the Senate’s highest honor, the Liberty Medal, to Amelia for truly exemplifying the spirit of heroism and compassion and the best of New York,” said Senator Tedisco in a statement. Tedisco presented Juracka with the award at the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York office in Queensbury.
