Woodlawn Ave. Building Brings $2.8 Million Bid

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A three-week auction of the county-owned building at 31 Woodlawn Ave. recently concluded. The high bidder for the building, which once housed the DMV, was identified as the Adirondack Trust Company. The bid is for $2.8 million. County approval of the sale of the building is expected to take place later this month, city Supervisor Matt Veitch said.

Ford: Forgotten Patriot Rediscovered

I

n 1976, as the nation prepared to celebrate its 200th birthday, my parents, Joan and W. Donald Carola of Mechanicville, were already a year into the hunt for records of an elusive ancestor: Sanbun Ford, a founder of the town of Milton.

Trips to local court houses and towns in New England resulted in a Ford family genealogy story, dating back to 1637, that they presented to my mother’s father, Joseph Ford, a retired paper mill electrician from Mechanicville. In 1976, he was invited to Milton’s Founders Day celebration where he and other descendants of the town’s early settlers were welcomed as guests of honor.

Through my parents’ long-ago sleuthing and my own research, our family has learned much more about Sanbun Ford. He was born on April 23, 1762 in Wallingford, CT, the fifth-generation Ford descended from Timothy Ford, an Englishman who arrived in New England circa 1637.

On Dec. 4, 1779, Sanbun enlisted as a private in the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons, known as Sheldon’s Horse for its commander, Col. Elisha Sheldon. There are indications that he joined the Patriot cause to replace a sick older brother.

Sanbun would serve five-andhalf years with the unit. Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester’s “History of Saratoga County, New York” has a paragraph describing Sanbun as having served from Bunker Hill to Yorktown, but I’m still working on verifying details of his service.

Sylvester’s book also mentions that Sanbun once captured a “cowboy” by making him place his finger into the barrel of Sanbun’s pistol. Cowboy was the name given to Loyalists who attacked residents and stole livestock and personal possessions in Westchester County, which during the Revolutionary War was the scene of vicious partisan fighting.

We know from Sanbun’s military pension papers, dated June 1837, that he captured a notorious cowboy named Jesse Mills, who was among the 450 Westchester

Loyalists sent on two ships to Saint John, New Brunswick in Canada after the war.

A roster of Sanbun’s regiment compiled by Maj. Benjamin Tallmadge shows that he was 5 feet, 3 inches tall with light complexion, gray eyes and brown hair.

Like many American veterans of the war, Sanbun was given land by Congress for his service. In 1790, he and his wife, Ada, and their first child, Simeon, settled in Hillsdale in Columbia County, NY. Two years later, they moved to Milton in Saratoga County.

Together, Sanbun and Ada raised nine children, four boys and five girls. At least two sons would fight in the War of 1812. The daughters would go on to marry men with last names Hall, Shepard, McLean, Irish and Lewis.

Grandsons of Sanbun and Ada would fight in the Civil War. Their names can be found on the Civil War monument located at Low and Front streets in the village of Ballston Spa. There is a street named after the Fords, many of whom are buried in the Village Cemetery in Ballston Spa. Later generations of Fords branched out to Mechanicville and Green Island. Others ended up in western New York.

Various documents note that Sanbun settled at Spiers Corners, now West Milton, and later ran a public house near the Rosehill farm of Judge John Thompson where aging fellow Patriots came to dine and reminisce about their wartime service. During the War of 1812, after U.S. victories, Sanbun and the Rev. Elder Langworthy would fire

off a cannon they had purchased in Albany.

By 1820, Sanbun was destitute and penniless, living off his Revolutionary War pension and the generosity of fellow members of the local Baptist church.

Employed to ring the church bell, he eventually had to give up that duty due to poor eyesight. A religious man, Sanbun called his Bible his side-arm.

Sanbun died at 84 years old on Oct. 20, 1846, a year-and-ahalf after his beloved wife Ada. Before he died, he asked that an American flag, his Bible and Continental Army papers be buried with him.

Sanbun was buried in an unmarked grave in the Village Cemetery. A chance meeting with cemetery caretaker Rich Fox led me to the location of the Ford plots. I then went to work acquiring a veteran’s grave marker from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The marker was placed on Sanbun’s grave just prior to July 4, 2017.

Every Fourth of July, I place two American flags on his final resting place as a tribute to a Patriot once forgotten, now remembered.

Who: Alyssa Hatin, Owner of Luxe Salon|Spa on Broadway Q. Q. Have you always lived in Saratoga?

A. I am originally from Queensbury, and I opened my first salon in Lake George.

Q. As a stylist, why did you decide to open your own business?

A. It has always been a goal of mine. I had the opportunity to start small and expand to a full salon and spa in Lake George when I was 21.

I had a vision that no one else in Lake George had at that time. In 2015, I was able to move to Broadway because a space opened up.

Q. How did you pick the name Luxe?

A. I wanted a luxury salon that was available to all ages. The name Luxe is short and clean.

Q. What services do you offer?

A. Hair, I have my own extension line too, Botox, fillers, facials, airbrush tanning, waxing, and barbershop services.

Q. Can you explain more about your extension line?

A. My extension line is called Fabuluxe.

I trademarked how they are put in, The Mane Extension Method™, that no one else offers. It is no heat, no glue, and extensions can be worn for months at a time with a move-up appointment once a month. I have 100 clients with them in right now. And, I am getting more hair pieces in, wigs and half wigs, for people with hair loss due to Alopecia, cancer, etc.

Q. When you are not at the salon what do you like to do in your free time?

A. I’m a full-time mom of two girls who are 3 and 4.

Q. What is the best advice you’ve ever received and who gave it to you?

A. Something along the lines of “you are the only one that is going to be who you are”, said to me by a client I have had ever since I opened my first salon in Lake George.

Q. What was the last photo you took?

A. A picture of my client’s hair.

Q. What movie represents your life?

A. I would say the movie “Joy” is pretty close to my life.

Q. When was the last time you did something new?

A. Designing my new home that I just moved into.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Richard Earl Robenstein of Saratoga Springs died suddenly on April 13, 2021. Born in Hackensack, NJ he was the son of the late Richard A Robenstein and Marguerite Earl Robenstein.

He graduated from Northern Regional High School in 1967.

He began his successful nuclear career in the US Navy. He held a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. When leaving the Navy he went to work for

starting their family she went to work for Saratoga County for 25 years and retired from the clerk’s office. Mom was a DIY (Do-ityourself) Queen; she also loved to go bowling and shopping. But most of all Debra enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her mother, Elsie Ebert; son, William T. Carter Jr. (Christine); daughter, Colleen Biddle (Brian); brother, Michael Ebert (Marci); brothers-in-law, Jimmy Carter (Sherri), and Jerry Carter (Pam); sister-in-law, Eileen Dingman (Mike); granddaughter, Alyssa Biddle, and her many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her dearly.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Carter Sr., father, James Ebert, and brother Vincent Edward.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave. in Saratoga Springs.

Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, PA. After leaving Westinghouse he moved on to become Vice President of ECI, forming a nuclear training division. After a few years he formed his own very successful nuclear consulting firm ETC/ETCI and finishing his career at Entergy Corporation.

Rich loved most of all spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and golfing. He was an active member of the Ballston Spa Elks Lodge #2619. While in the Elks he served as the Veterans Chair. A committee very dear to his heart.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother Randolph Earl Robenstein and a sister Rita Ellen Robenstein Procter.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 52 years Candyce Haley Robenstein, two sons Richard Earl Robenstein II and Christopher Earl Robenstein, grandsons

Richard Earl Robenstein III, Tyler Jacob Robenstein and Connor Ryan Robenstein.

A memorial service will be celebrated at the Historic Church of St Peter’s on Saturday May 1, 2021 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Ave. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs.

Ciro Magliulo

GANSEVOORT — Ciro Anthony Magliulo, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 30, 2021 at his residence in Shelly Park, Gansevoort with his family by his side.

He was born on February 16, 1930 in Brooklyn, son of the late Guiseppe Magliulo and Carmela Buono Magliulo.

Ciro grew up in Brooklyn and had numerous jobs starting at the age of 9 when he worked as a shoeshine boy. Ciro went on to operate an ice cream truck, worked as a cutter in the Garment District and as an aide at Kings County Hospital Mental Health Unit. Ciro then owned and operated a Lawn Mower and Bike Shop in Centereach, LI during the day while refinishing floors in the evenings.

Ciro was an experienced builder who built St. Andrews Episcopal Church and Rectory in Centereach, NY, which was one of his proudest accomplishments.

In 1969, he moved his large family to Lake Luzerne, NY where Ciro owned and operated Rocky Ridge Dude Ranch. He later converted the ranch into Ciro’s Restaurant and several years after that he converted the barn from the ranch into a beautiful home where he and his wife Doreen, resided for 28 years.

Ciro and his wife Doreen retired from the restaurant business and started their craft business, Mountain Lakes Pewter in 1984 and they traveled the Northeast Craft Show Circuit until 1996 where they met and made many new friends.

In 2011, they sold their home in Lake Luzerne and moved to

Shelly Park in Gansevoort where they enjoyed many good times with neighbors and new friends at the Senior Center participating in pot-luck dinners, card games and other enjoyable activities.

Ciro continued to be an exceptional chef who loved to cook his homemade Italian recipes for his family, friends, and neighbors.

Ciro is survived by his wife of 48 years, Doreen Magliulo; sons, Joseph Magliulo (Jeanne), Ciro II Magliulo (Pauline), Theodore Magliulo; daughters, Laura Bulman (Terry), Sharon Magliulo, Jeraldine Magliulo; step-son Doug Moore (Sandra), David Moore (Michele); step-daughter, Susan Halstead (Jeffrey); sister, Christina Nelson; grandchildren, Karl Mueller, Christopher Hunt, Sean and Megan Bulman, Anthony and Joseph (Stephanie) Magliulo, Patric Riley, Sherry Magliulo, Vincent Magliulo, Aimee Magliulo, Bradley Nagle (Michaela Rahimi), Antonia and Elizabeth Moore, Christopher Moore (Holly), Stephen Moore (Jenny), Alison Forster (Jimmy); and his great-grandchildren, Justin Mueller, Andrew Mueller, Josh Mueller, Kadence Magliulo, Edward Magliulo, Angus Moore, and Daniel Moore.

COURT Ronnie L. Gardner, 28, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced April 29 to 1 to 3 years in state prin, after pleading to felony grand larceny.

Brandon L. Sitts, 35, of Corinth, pleaded April 29 to felony burglary, Sentencing July 9.

Dennis J. Lescault, II, was sentenced April 29 to 2 to 4 years state prison after pleading to felony assault in Saratoga Springs, and additional time to be served after pleading to aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and DWAI in Malta. Sentences to run concurrently.

Billy Jo Murdie, 46, of Milton, pleaded April 27 to unlawful surveillance in the seconddegree, a felony. Sentencing July 6.

Samuel Tyrel, 22, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded April 26 to failure to register as a sex offender, a felony. Sentencing June 28.

Victor Casado, 29, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded April 26 to aggravated family offense, and to criminal possession of a weapon – both felonies.

Sheriff ’s Office Checks Alcohol Compliance Countywide.

On April 23, the Sheriff ’s Office, in conjunction with the NYS Liquor Authority, conducted an operation which checked for compliance with the NYS Alcohol Beverage Control Laws.

Underage volunteers were sent into the businesses to conduct a controlled purchase of alcohol. A total of 60 businesses were checked, 10 of which violated NYS Alcohol Beverage Control Law section 65-1, Sale of alcohol to a person under the age of 21. In each case the clerk who made the sale was arrested by the Sheriff ’s Office for violating section 65 of the ABC Law (Violation level offense). The stores will also face sanctions from the NYS Liquor Authority. The stores that failed compliance

POLICE Sheriff’s Department: Multi-town pursuit. A multi-town pursuit was initiated April 28 shortly after 7:30 p.m. when the driver of a vehicle fled authorities after reportedly striking the park entrance barriers at Saratoga Battlefield. The vehicle was spotted on a path that headed north on Route 32, then south on Route 4 through the village of Stillwater and the city of Mechanicville, before continuing westbound on Route 67, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office. The vehicle ultimately reached Route 9, where it turned south, striking signs at the roundabout at Routes 9

and 67, and eventually crossing over to the northbound lane on Route 9 striking a guardrail near Goldfoot Road in the town of Malta and coming to a stop. The operator of the vehicle, identified as 48-year-old Robert A. Sanders of Lakewood, New Jersey, was found dead at the scene, police said.

City

Police: Altercation on Caroline Street. A man was slashed with a knife after a verbal exchange inside a Caroline Street bar accelerated into a physical altercation that involved a handful of people last weekend. The altercation involved a swinging of a sandwich board sign and the alleged slashing of a victim’s head with a knife or cutting instrument, Saratoga Springs Police say. The victim, a 33-year-old man, suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was taken to Saratoga Hospital for treatment. The incident occurred Saturday, April 24. Officers were called to Caroline Street for a fight in progress at approximately 9:15

p.m. Police said their investigation shows that victim and his friends had been inside a Caroline Street establishment when words were exchanged between the victim’s group and another group inside.

Both groups were asked to leave the establishment. Once outside, approximately four people from the two groups engaged in a physical altercation. Upon their arrival, officers determined the fight was over. They did find the 33-year-old victim, however, other involved parties had already left the area. Since the incident, officers and investigators have been obtaining video and interviewing witnesses. Downtown establishments have been quick to assist, police said. At this time, the police department feels this was an isolated incident between two groups of people who had no prior relationship. SARATOGA — The Gateway House of Peace, a not-for-profit organization offering hospice care, has been serving the Saratoga County region since 2014 as a safe, comfortable and caring home for terminally ill patients.

Gateway House has always relied on the generosity of this community for support, as they are a donor-driven community organization which receives no insurance reimbursements or government funding, and care for residents and their families is at no fee to them.

In an effort to become more

self-sustaining, Gateway House is seeking to open a Thrift Store that would allow to build upon the fundraising success the organization has had in the community with yard sales. With that goal in mind, Gateway House is seeking the donation of a building or location that could be used for such a Thrift Store. Gateway House of Peace believes this gift would allow them to achieve a longevity of service for our community.

Nature Craft Hours at Camp Saratoga - Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park WILTON — Starting on Tuesday, May 11, Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be hosting Nature Craft Hours under the pavilion at Camp Saratoga on Scout Road. Nature Craft hours are scheduled 4-5 p.m. every Tuesday through the rest of the season and are geared for children of all ages. Each Tuesday will feature a different and creative nature-themed arts project.

Please note, there is a craft

supply fee of $3 per participant. Participants should park in Parking Lot #1 located on Scout Road directly across the street from the pavilion. Although this is an outdoor program, face masks will be expected to be worn throughout the duration of the program. Registration is required.

Saratoga Springs DPW Celebrates Arbor Day SARATOGA SPRINGS — Commissioner of Public Works Anthony “Skip” Scirocco was joined by the City Arborist, Steve Lashomb, and NYSDEC Regional Forester for Region 5, Jeff Speich, today, to celebrate Arbor Day with the planting of a new tree on Broadway.

The City of Saratoga Springs has been recognized as a Tree City USA, since 2017, by the Arbor Day Foundation, and the planting of this new tree acknowledged the City’s continued commitment to its urban forest.

“The City of Saratoga Springs has demonstrated a real commitment toward protecting and promoting our urban forest. This has included investment from both the City and our community partners.

The Tree City USA program, administered by the Arbor Day Foundation, designates municipalities following the review of their investment and maintenance to the

urban tree canopy. The program requires spending of at least $2 per capita on urban forestry. Saratoga Springs budgets approximately $11 per capita to manage its urban forest.

Franklin Community Center Receives $10,000 Donation for Project Lift SARATOGA SPRINGS — Franklin Community Center, a Saratoga Springs-based organization that provides basic necessities and services to individuals and families, received a charitable contribution of $10,000 from the Jennifer Crimi Sunshine Donor Advised Fund of The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. This grant will support Project Lift, an after-school prevention program for youth that operates within the Saratoga Springs City School District elementary and middle schools.

“Support from partners like Dennis and Lynne Crimi and the Jennifer Crimi Sunshine Donor Advised Fund is critical to the continued success of our program. We are grateful for their generosity,” said Colleen O’Connor Potter, Project Lift Program Director. “Thanks to their support, we will be able to send approximately 60 children to over 250 weeks of summer camp. These kids will get to experience muchneeded fun and exciting programs in safe and healthy environments.”

Dennis and Lynne Crimi established the Jennifer Crimi Sunshine Fund as a way to honor the memory of their daughter. Since 2005, the fund has given hundreds of children in need the opportunity to spend summer at various camps and other outdoor adventures.

Franklin Community Center operates Project Lift in all Saratoga Springs Central School District elementary schools and middle school. The unique and comprehensive program has been in operation for over 30 years and places strong emphasis on positive youth development. The after-school program is free to the enrolled

SARATOGA SPRINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY PROJECT CONNECTS NYers

SARATOGA SPRINGS — We can learn a lot from one another, even if we may never meet. So, what is daily life like for you?

The Saratoga Springs Public Library has launched a project to connect New Yorkers across the diverse state landscape through the act of letter-writing.

The project was inspired by Sue Johnson, who first brought the idea to the Saratoga Springs Public Library a year ago after having participated in a similar program from Oregon Humanities called, “Dear Stranger” - a project which since 2014 has seen almost 1,000 people exchange letters.

Dear New Yorker is a creative writing project that allows people living in and around New York state to create connections through writing letters to other New Yorkers. Saratoga

Springs Public Library is the host of the project.

Here’s how it works: Participants pen a letter, send it to the library and then the library will match it and send it off to another letter writer. Volunteers will log and keep track of correspondences, but all participant addresses will be kept confidential and not shared with other participants. The only thing the letter recipient will get is your first name and letter - no contact information.

Participating in the project means someone in the state will receive your letter and you will receive one from someone else.

The anonymous exchange provides the opportunity to share experiences about life across many miles.

“What’s a day in the life in your town? What do you like about it? What makes your town unique?” Johnson says. “Our state is so diverse, and in so many ways.”

The project recognizes that a lot can be learned from our neighbors across the state, even if we may never meet one another.

While participants in the project may eventually have the opportunity to exchange addresses, all letters will be exchanged anonymously. “Strictly anonymous, unless the two parties decide they want to carry on and write to each other,” Johnson says. The letters participants receive will come from the library’s address, to ensure participant addresses are kept confidential.

City Discusses New Cannabis Legislation and Potential Revenue

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The city this week discussed legislation signed March 31 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo legalizing adultuse cannabis.

The new law in New York legalizes use and possession of cannabis of up to three ounces for those over 21 and older. ”I realize our last City Council meeting was actually on 4/20, and if I had been more clever I would have discussed this then,” quipped city attorney Vince DeLeonardis, referencing the April 20 or 4/20 so-called national holiday for cannabis culture.

DeLeonardis told the council that multiple state agencies are being established to administer programs, issue licenses, and investigate and enforce infractions related to cannabis.

The agencies include the NYS Cannabis Control Board and the Office of Cannabis Management.

“This is anticipated to be very similar as to how the state regulates alcohol through the State Liquor

Authority,” DeLeonardis said.

Besides the newly legislated use and possession of cannabis in New York, the law allows for retail dispensaries and onsite consumption establishments, but those are not expected to take place until at least late 2022.

Municipalities do have the ability to opt-out of allowing these, but to do so they must adopt a Local Law by Dec. 31, 2021, which will also be subject to a public referendum.

Revenue-wise, there will be a 4% tax imposed upon the cannabis, with 3% of that 4% coming to the city. In other words, if the city of Saratoga Springs does not optout it would receive 75% of the 4% tax, and Saratoga County would receive the other 25%.

That 4/20 designation, according to an article published

by Time magazine in 2018, traces back to five students at a Marin County, California high school, who in the early 1970s would say “420” to each other as code for marijuana, in advance of their meeting at 4:20 p.m. by a campus statue “to partake.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A schematic design of the proposed Fire/EMS Station 3 was presented to the city this week.

The one-story building measures 15,500 square feet, features dark green siding with white trim, and will be centered on a 2.4-acre

parcel the city is leasing from the state at the east end of the Oklahoma Training Track property, with a drive-in entry on Henning Road.

The city’s two other stations are located in close proximity downtown, and on the west side, respectively. Station 3 will largely serve residents on the city’s east side.

Review of the design will be referred to the city Planning Board

and Design Review Commission for their advisory opinions.

Environmental assessments are anticipated to be completed in July to be followed by the completion of final detailed building plans in January 2022. If that timeline stays true, the city can start receiving bids in February 2022 with construction to begin two months later.

City-Owned Lot Next to Library Approved For Sale

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City Council this week unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the sale of city-owned property at the southwest corner of Caroline and Henry streets.

The property currently serves as a 19-space parking lot and is located next to the Saratoga Springs Public Library.

Listed as two lots on the county tax map, the city says the lots – which it has owned since the early 1980s - have been recently appraised and determined to have a fair market value of about $500,000 and plans to sell it through a competitive bidding process.

The city cited construction of the City Center Authority parking lot as having rendered the paved Henry Street lot as no

longer useful, and notes efforts “to mitigate the serious financial impacts caused by the COVID19 pandemic.”

Visually prominent on Henry Street is a large mural depicting a six-piece musical ensemble, which clings to a brick wall on Caroline Street. The mural was painted in 1998 by the Youth in Saratoga Mentoring Program of Catholic Charities, with funds administered by the Saratoga Arts Council.

ust about now, the spring flowering bulbs are finishing up their spring show.

Cool weather in late April extended the show the tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and others put on for a delightfully long time. If you have trouble getting your bulbs to come back bigger and better every year, you probably need a reminder on the “after care” they need right now as they are finishing up.

The trick to perpetual success with bulbs is to think of them as rechargeable batteries. To make sure that they return in greater numbers with more flowers, you need to know how to “recharge the battery” after they flower in spring. The “growth energy” stored in the bulb since last fall is quickly depleted during the all-out effort to flower in spring.

To “recharge” your bulbs, you’ll want to wait until after the flower “go by” or shrivel up. Then cut the spent flower off including the stem it was on. Make sure that you don’t cut off the leave though. Think of the bulbs’ leaves as solar collectors that change sunlight into “growth energy” that is sent to the bulb below for storage. Don’t cut off these solar collectors when you remove the spent blossoms.

With the flowers cut off the bulb won’t waste “growth energy” producing seeds. Instead, that “growth energy” will instead be directed to the bulb where it is stored until next spring’s flowering cycle.

This is also the time to feed the bulbs. My favorite bulb food is Espoma Bulb-Tone. It will provide the balance of nutrients your bulbs will need, along

with the energy from the sun that the leaves are still collecting, to grow the bulb below even bigger and better so you’ll have more plants with more flowers every spring. To feed the bulbs, simply poke some holes into the soil among the bulbs and pour a little food into the holes. This will get the food closer to the roots that will absorb and make use if it.

Remember; don’t cut the leaves off, just the flower stems. The leaves will eventually turn yellow as summer begins letting you know they’ve finished their job charging up your “bulb batteries” for another spring filled with the flowers we love so much after a long winter.

New Owners Vow to “Continue the Legacy”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Northshire Bookstore opened the doors to its Saratoga Springs store on an August day in 2013, affecting in innumerable positive ways the downtown landscape of the Spa City. This week, it begins a new chapter.

“It is with excitement, confidence and sadness that I announce that the Northshire Bookstores are passing out of Morrow ownership,” said Northshire co-owner Chris Morrow, announcing in

a statement that Clark and Lu French of Manchester, Vermont are the new owners of Northshire Bookstores, which sites locations in Saratoga Springs and Manchester, VT. Chris Morrow’s parents, Ed and Barbara Morrow, started the original store in Vermont in September of 1976.

“When thinking about selling, my main worry was always finding someone, or two, who had the right sensibilities as well as the chops; someone who appreciated The Book, the art of bookselling and our amazing staff and who

also had the background, energy, vision and resources to carry the bookstores into future decades,” said Chris Morrow. In a generation of memories, Morrow explained it is the people he has come across he is most grateful for - from colleagues who have worked at the bookstores, authors who have dropped by, fellow bookstores, publishing houses, and the clientele “who have made all this possible for us. What a beautiful adventure.”

Ed and Barbara Morrow added that this is a personally bittersweet moment for them and expressed confidence they are passing the store’s stewardship into good and competent hands.

Clark and Lu French, longtime patrons and supporters of Northshire, released this statement: “As this beloved familyowned business approaches its 45th Anniversary, we are thrilled and honored to become its next stewards. Along with our ownership team members Jon and Tom West, we are committed to continuing the legacy and high standards the Morrows have cultivated over their long tenure.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, in partnership with the Preservation League of New York State, will offer local real estate and design professionals an exclusive opportunity to learn about marketing historic properties while earning three continuing education credits.

Realtors and design professionals are invited to join “Architecturally Speaking for Professionals” on Friday, May 21 on Zoom from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to learn about listing,

buying, selling, or rehabilitating older properties.

Representatives from the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, City of Saratoga Springs Planning Department, NYS Historic Preservation Office, and the Adirondack Trust Company will share their knowledge and resources. In addition, a local realtor well-versed in rehabilitating historic properties will speak about their experience.

Saratoga Springs High School has also announced that beginning with the Class of 2022, they will no longer be reporting the top students of the class, including a valedictorian and a salutatorian. They will start using only an unweighted Grade Point Average (GPA).

This decision was made by the Building Leadership Team (BLT), which is comprised of members in the school district: students, teachers, parents, school counselors, support staff, and building administration. The BLT presented this to the Board of Education in July 2019, and it was communicated

to families the following month.

The team used research from college admissions counselors, national organizations, the SSHS Graduation Committee, and other local high schools to form their decision. Student Council received input and feedback from the student body.

Student Council received input that if a weighted GPA is removed, so should the top rank, as the top rank creates division, anxiety and separation among peers.

The switch to use only the unweighted GPA was made because the BLT believes that the dual GPA system is not only confusing, but inconsistent when used to determine scholarships, merit awards, and rank. Therefore, they will no longer be reporting class rank on a student’s transcript.

The BLT believes that their decision will impact the school culture by fostering an environment in which students will place more importance on learning and personalizing their schedules. With the weighted GPA system, students are more likely to prioritize their grades over their interests, passions, and academically challenging themselves. College admissions counselors have reported they like to see students taking courses that are challenging, yet appropriate, for their academic interests.

Saratoga Independent School Announces Appointment of Next Head of School SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Board of Trustees of Saratoga Independent School (S.I.S.) has named Robert C. Ahrens, Jr. as its new Head of School beginning July 1, 2021.

Robert “Bob” Ahrens has worked in independent schools for more than 25 years. For the past 7 years, Ahrens has served as the Assistant Head of School for Academics & Director of Upper School at Andrews Osborne Academy, a co-educational boarding school in Willoughby, OH. Over his vast career, he has worn many hats and served in numerous roles, beginning as a Middle School math teacher and Dean of Students before moving into administrative leadership positions. In addition, he has served as a member of six school accreditation teams as well as serving as a presenter at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) National Conference.

Julie S. Fuller, President of the Board of Trustees, stated, “As Saratoga Independent School

Genealogy and Local History Heritage Hunters Zoom program for Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. will be presented by Dr. Michael Lucas, Curator of Historical Archaeology at the New York State Museum. Dr. Lucas’ current research focuses on the historical archaeology of slavery in the Hudson River Valley, with an emphasis on the period from 1750 to 1820. Returning for their 22nd year, with a one-year hiatus in 2020, M&A Farm’s staff dishes up stacks of breakfast menu items for customers to customize into their favorite sandwich. At 85, Arnold Grant continues as the farm owner and the main cook at M&A’s stand, but he has help from a big crew made up of three different generations in the family. The Grant family has owned their farm, located in Durkeetown, NY, between Fort Edward and Argyle, for over 200 years.

“My first memories are of the farm being operated as a dairy farm by my great uncle, and then by my dad, still as a dairy farm,” says Grant. In 1998, he joined the Saratoga Farmers’ Market initially to sell his meats, but the breakfast sandwiches took off at the same time.

Over the years, M&A Farm has been a crowd favorite, as well as a Saturday farmers’ market breakfast tradition. Many customers were noticeably excited for their return last weekend as the summer market season officially began.

“It hasn’t seemed right without you,” said a customer named Linda just as we walked up to speak to owner Arnold Grant. At the same time, customers who only recently started shopping at the farmers’ market since last year’s move to the Wilton Mall were pleasantly surprised to see a new ready-to-eat option. “We’re so excited to see egg & cheese sandwiches at the market! Now we know to skip breakfast and come straight here,” noted Bethany, another market-goer.

“We’ve been open for a long time,” says Grant resolutely. “I’m hoping to pass the business on to my granddaughter. At 85, I’m getting ready to retire soon, but I’d like it to stay in the family,” he adds. It sounds like Saratoga Farmers’ Market customers will be able to enjoy the farm-fresh sandwiches for some time to come.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wilton Mall and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. at High Rock Park.

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 4 large eggs*

• 1 cup bacon*, cooked and chopped

• 4 egg whites*

• ½ tsp chopped fresh thyme* leaves

• 2 TBSP milk* • ½ tsp salt, divided • ¼ tsp pepper, divided • 1 cup shiitake mushrooms*, sliced • 1 cup asparagus*, chopped into pieces

• 1 TBSP chopped parsley* leaves (reserve some for garnish) • ½ cup chevre* (or another soft cheese*), crumbled into tiny pieces

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat broiler and place top rack 4-5” from the element.

Whisk together the eggs, egg whites, milk, ¼ tsp salt, and a pinch of pepper and set aside.

2. On the stovetop, melt butter over medium-high heat in an iron skillet. Add vegetables and saute until they begin to soften for about 3-4 minutes. Add in the bacon, thyme, half of the parsley, 1/4 tsp salt, a pinch of pepper, and cook stirring 1 more minute.

3. Pour the egg mixture over the veggies and stir to evenly spread the veggies around. Let it cook, about 3-4 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and sprinkle cheese over the top.

4. Place skillet under the broiler until eggs are slightly puffed and cheese begins to bubble and brown, 3-4 minutes. Watch carefully. Remove from the oven, slide frittata onto a serving platter. Garnish with remaining parsley. Slice and serve.

This weekend is Mother’s Day. Remembering my mother at this time brings those memories that make me laugh and cry. I lost my mother many years ago. However, I do still have my Mother-in law, who I do

As I reflect on the years that I did have with my mother, the for Saratoga TODAY importance of family and time spent with family is a significant piece that stands out. Our home was filled with emotions, excitement and constant family interaction.

I have talked about growing up in an Italian family in many of my articles. Italians are a matriarchal nationality.

It’s the women who carry on the traditions and hand out the majority of discipline, wisdom and nurturing to the children. As I was growing up being one of five siblings, every room in the house involved teaching and training by my mother. Life seemed much simpler and sweeter then. We had parents who loved us but weren’t afraid to discipline us. I continue to reminisce with my siblings on the “Italian” scoldings we would often get with something being said in half Italian and half English and the constant phrase “…because I said so!”

There are so many of life’s lessons we learn from our mothers, that get handed down from generation to generation.

Lessons such as: “it’s the small things that count, or don’t sweat the small stuff; always be honest; admit mistakes, be humble; care about the right things; laugh often, learn from others.” I can go on and on there are so many.

lery e C h t i w s p Pork Cho Salad d n o m l A and INGREDIENTS • 1/4 cup dried, unsweetened cranberries • 3 tablespoons unseasoned rice vinegar • 2 (1 1/2”-thick) bone-in pork rib chops (about 1 lb each), patted dry • 4 tablespoons extra-virgin

olive oil, divided • 3 sprigs thyme • 3 garlic cloves, smashed • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces • 1 small shallot, finely chopped

• 1/2 cup parsley leaves with tender stems • 1/4 cup chopped salted, dry-roasted almonds • 1 ounce Parmesan, shaved • Salt

• 6 large or 8 medium celery stalks, thinly sliced on a diagonal

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Combine cranberries and vinegar in a small bowl and set aside.

2. Season pork generously with salt, then rub with 1 Tbsp. oil total. Heat a dry medium skillet, preferably cast iron, over medium. Cook pork chops, moving once or twice to hotter areas of skillet, until first side is deeply browned, 6–9 minutes. Turn pork chops and cook until second sides are browned, about 5 minutes. Working one at a time, set chops on fatty side with tongs to melt and brown fat cap, about 1 minute each. At this point an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of each chop should register 135°F. 3. Add thyme, garlic, and butter to skillet and swirl to melt butter. Tilt skillet toward you so butter pools in the pan and spoon foaming butter over chops continuously until butter is browned, about 1 minute.

Transfer pork chops, thyme, and garlic to a cutting board and let meat rest while you assemble the salad.

4. Combine shallot and a couple of pinches of salt in a large bowl. Pour vinegar from reserved cranberries into bowl. Whisking constantly, gradually add remaining 3 Tbsp. oil. Add cranberries, celery, parsley, almonds, Parmesan, and several pinches of salt; toss to combine.

5. Cut along bones to remove meat from pork chops; slice meat 1/2” thick. Transfer meat and bones to a platter along with garlic and thyme, then drizzle any accumulated juices left on cutting board over top. Serve with salad.

Elizabeth does in Buckingham Palace. My Mom didn’t hold a staff like the Queen but she did carry a rolling pin and a wooden spoon. For a few years it was never very far from her right hand.

This Mother’s Day when it is time for dinner, seat mom first and clean up so she can enjoy her day.

Call Mom on a regular basis and tell her how you feel about her.

You cannot say “I love you Mom” enough. Meal time is family time. Look at each other, listen to each other, tell stories, and talk about life. Whatever the gift is that you give your Mom on Mother’s Day, the greatest gift is the smile and love you give her. Hold onto these traditions and family time you have created. Enjoy your time at home and make beautiful memories. Thank our moms for the valuable life lessons learned that we continue to pass on.

ROCK CITY FALLS — Seth Sikes, of whom NY Arts Review said, “may well be one of the saviors of the Great American Songbook” will return to The Mansion of Saratoga on Friday, May 21 for one performance only.

In “Runnin’ Wild,” Sikes will be singing favorites from the Great American Songbook in

his own modern style and highlighting songs made famous by idols like Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and Liza Minnelli.

We the Nighthawks, a 13-Track Album Featuring Kimberly Hawkey, Debuts in May SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kimberly Hawkey – multi-genre vocalist, instrumentalist and bandleader – debuts a 13-track album called We the Nighthawks on May 21. The first single, “Slow Cool Water,” will be available on May 7.

We the Nighthawks pulls from art song, jazz, musical theatre and American songbook to invite listeners on a sonic journey that captures human stories of life, love and loss.

The project was conceived and driven creatively by songwriters Lecco Morris and Justin K. Rivers. Morris and Rivers raised well over six figures through investors and donors, ensuring the project and story continued to unfold in the same way it began.

Opera Saratoga Announces Its 60th Anniversary - 2021 Summer Festival SARATOGA SPRINGS — Opera Saratoga has announced the company’s return to the stage for its 60th Anniversary with a season of performances inspired by the iconic novel Don Quixote

by Miguel de Cervantes.

Working closely with a team of medical professionals and a dedicated COVID Safety Officer, Opera Saratoga will be produced outdoors during June and July in partnership with the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Spa State Park, and Pitney Meadows Community Farm to provide three unique performance spaces for audiences to safely enjoy two fully staged productions and a special concert.

In partnership with SPAC, Opera Saratoga will present MAN OF LA MANCHA, the Tony Award winning musical, featuring Broadway and Opera star Zachary James in the role of Cervantes / Don Quixote; and Opera Saratoga favorite, Kelly Glyptis, returning to Saratoga Springs as Aldonza.

Three performances are scheduled on the SPAC Amphitheater Stage at 8 p.m. on July 8, 9, and 10.

In a more classical vein, Opera Saratoga will also present DON QUICHOTTE AT CAMACHO’S WEDDING, a one-act comic serenata by Georg Philipp Telemann with a libretto by Daniel Schiebeler, taken from an episode from Part Two of Cervantes’ celebrated novel, in which the Knight and his squire Sancho Panza encounter some rather strange wedding celebrations as they roam the world in search of adventure. The al fresco production will be staged by Rebecca Miller Kratzer and will be conducted by Michelle Rofrano in and around the Columbia Pavilion in Saratoga Spa State Park, with the backdrop of the forest creating a natural setting for this pastoral adventure. Twelve performances are scheduled between July 14 and July 18, with performances at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 6 p.m.

The two staged productions will be complemented by QUIXOTIC OPERA, a concert of scenes from other operas inspired by Cervantes’ novel, presented in partnership with Pitney Meadows Community Farm. Two

performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. on June 24 and 25.

“As we considered how to best return to the stage this summer, I found myself repeatedly drawn to works inspired by Don Quixote,” said Opera Saratoga’s Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson, in a statement. “ I think we’ve all needed to channel some of the famous knighterrant’s idealism and extreme optimism – and to dream impossible dreams in the face of unprecedented challenges. Thanks to the willingness and enthusiasm of our partners at SPAC, Spa State Park, and Pitney Meadows to dream with us, we are able to come back together as a community to safely enjoy some incredible music and theater together this summer.”

Leading up to the Festival, Opera Saratoga will also offer an 8-week online course: Another Age, Another Place, Another La Mancha: Don Quixote and the Birth of the Modern World. Taught

by Skidmore Professor Grace Burton, this course will explore why the story of an old man’s wanderings through the dusty plains of 17th-century Spain have captured the imagination of philosophers and filmmakers, composers and choreographers, dramatists, and dreamers alike. The course will be offered via Zoom, on eight consecutive Wednesday evenings, from May 12 – June 30.

OPERA SARATOGA COVID-19 AUDIENCE SAFETY PROTOCOLS As required by New York State, all ticket buyers will be required to show either proof of vaccination at least 14 days prior to their attendance, or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the performance they are attending. In addition, attendees will be required to complete a health screening questionnaire and pass a mandatory temperature check prior to entry.

Audience members will be required to wear masks at all performances, regardless of vaccination status or proof of a negative test.

Restrooms will be available with social distancing and enhanced cleaning and sanitation protocols in place in accordance with recommended guidelines.

TICKET INFORMATION Due to social distancing at all performances, tickets are extremely limited this season, and it is anticipated that performances will sell out in advance.

At all venues, tickets will be sold in socially distanced pods of two seats. At SPAC, pods of one, two, or four seats will also be available on the SPAC lawn for Man of La Mancha. Very limited single tickets will be available under the

roof of the amphitheater for Man of La Mancha, but single tickets are not available for Quixotic Opera or Don Quichotte at Camacho’s Wedding due to the seating configurations at these venues. Advance ticket purchases are required for Quixotic Opera and Don Quichotte at Camacho’s Wedding. Advance ticket purchases are strongly advised for Man of La Mancha. If tickets are available on the day of

performance at SPAC, ticket purchases will be subject to an additional fee.

SPAC "Classical Kids" Will Return Virtually May 10 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s flagship in-school program, “Classical Kids,” is set to return in a virtual format.

Programs partnered with resident companies New York City Ballet and The Philadelphia Orchestra will take place from May 10-28, and will reach more than 24,000 students and 55 elementary and middle schools in the greater Capital Region.

New for this year, two engaging video performances that were curated exclusively for Capital Region students will be presented.

All 24,000 students who participate in the program will then receive a SPAC Student Lawn Pass, which grants the student and an accompanying adult free

lawn admission to all ballet and orchestra performances at SPAC until their projected year of graduation from High School.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has caused SPAC to innovate and reimagine many of our events and performances and our Classical Kids program is no exception.

While we typically partner with our incredible local musicians and dance troupes, this year we had the unique opportunity to present ballet and classical music from our very own resident companies," said Elizabeth Sobol, president & CEO of Saratoga Performing Arts Center, in a statement.

The Classical Kids programs will feature excerpts from A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Steadfast Tin Soldier,

performed by New York City Ballet and works by Beethoven and Dvořák, performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra. Both the dance and orchestra programs include an accompanying study guide, developed specifically for students. Available to stream on demand from May 10-28, Classical Kids is scheduled to serve schools located in Albany, Essex, Fulton, Hamilton, Mongomery, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Rensselaer, Warren and Washington counties.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Trey Anastasio has announced he will return to the hometown of Phish collaborator Tony Markellis next month for three solo shows at SPAC. Markellis died on April 29.

Attendance will be limited to

Schuylerville Varsity Football Wins Class C Championship SCHUYLERVILLE — Schuylerville Varsity Football faced Hoosick Falls in the Class C Championship on Saturday, May 1. They finish their season undefeated, with a 34-15 win over Hoosick Falls to claim the title.

The first points of the game went to Schuylerville, when a failed punt by Hoosick Falls was recovered by Abruscato in the end zone. The 2 pt. conversion was completed by Dwyer.

In the second quarter, Dwyer scored on a 47 yd TD (2 pt. conversion unsuccessful). O. Sherman also scored on a 25 yd TD (2 pt. conversion unsuccessful).

In the third quarter, McGarrahan scored on a 12 yd TD, and the 2 pt. conversion was completed by Dow to O. Sherman.

Hoosick Falls got on the board in the fourth quarter, when Mackey scored on a 59 yd TD pass from D’Agostino (kick was good).

Colegrove returned the ensuing kick for a 75 yd TD, and the 2 pt. conversion was completed by D’Agostino to Blake.

Schuylerville wrapped up their scoring in the fourth quarter with a 15 yd TD pass from O. Sherman to Bowen (2 pt. conversion unsuccessful).

Schuylerville had 313 total yards. Dwyer rushed for 73 yds on 6 carries and 1 TD, O. Sherman rushed for 35 yds on 8 carries and 1 TD, Dow rushed for 47 yds on 4 carries, and McGarrahan rushed for 28 yds on 9 carries and 1 TD. O. Sherman was 7/15 on passing attempts for 121 yds with 1 TD. Receiving, Dow had 3 catches for 69 yds and Bowen had 3 catches for 43 yds and 1 TD. Schuylerville Varsity Soccer Ends the Season with a Win SCHUYLERVILLE — Gloversville visited Schuylerville for the final game of the Fall 2 season.

Schuylerville opened up the scoring 7 minutes in when Liam Armstrong sent a cross that Matt Stampfli finished for the early lead. The Horses would create some opportunities, but it was Gloversville who would find the equalizer when Doug Cook found the back of the net with 10 minutes remaining in the half. The second half was much like the first half, as Schuylerville’s Reid Rockhill sent a ball across the middle and Sam Tyler placed it past the keeper for a 2-1 lead. Schuylerville would see it out and come away with the 2-1 win. Both teams played a clean, great soccer game. Griffin Brophy had 2 saves for the Horses, and Justin Kemmet had 10 saves for Gloversville. The Horses saw 5 seniors play their last game and will be greatly missed – Cam Wian, Garrett Hutchinson, Troy Soriano, Matt Stampfli, and Nick O’Leary.

Pickleball Lessons Pickleball lessons may be just what you need to get started in one of the fastest growing sports in America. Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, and is easy to learn, low impact on your joints, and a fun way to work out with others.

Lessons take place at the Saratoga Branch on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. until June 9. The cost is $25 for members.

T-Ball (ages 4 to 6 years old) This class is an introduction to T-Ball. The focus is on learning the basic skill and game play. The children will be introduced to throwing, catching and hitting.

The classes take place on Wednesdays, 4 to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Saratoga Branch field until June 13. The cost is $40 for members and $70 for non-members.

Softball (6 to 8 years old) Softball skills classes are designed to provide players with an opportunity to engage in drills that teach and improve basic softball skills, including throwing, catching, fielding, batting and pitching. Please bring your own equipment, glove, bat and helmet.

Saratoga Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse Season Opener DELMAR — Saratoga Springs Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse Team started their season against Bethlehem this past Tuesday. In a close away game for Saratoga, Bethlehem came away with the win, 11-8.

For Saratoga, Thomas Bobear had 2 goals, Huck Patton had 3 goals and 2 assists, and Robby Fox had 1 goal and 5 assists. Will Kiernan and Graham Corcoran also scored 1 goal each For Bethlehem, Ben Cardinal had 2 goals and an assist, Tyler Richards had 4 goals and an assist,

and Jackson Carrol had 1 goal and 2 assists. Jack Lucey and Greg Sanchez both recorded 1 goal and 1 assist. Nate Hussar and Jones Dane also scored 1 goal each.

In goal for Saratoga, Owen Leary had 4 saves, allowing 7 goals, and Ian Whitcomb had 6 saves, allowing 4 goals.

In goal for Bethlehem, Colin Novak had 6 saves and allowed 8 goals.

Saratoga was originally scheduled to start off their season with a home game against Shaker, but that game has now been moved to June 4.

Hannah Barber Hannah is from Saratoga Springs and is in 6th grade.

Hannah has been dancing since she could walk, and has been formally enrolled in dance for eight years.

Hannah has been with her amazing ballet instructors at Saratoga Springs Youth Ballet for over four years, and has continued learning virtually from them.

She has performed with the New York City Ballet at SPAC in Coppélia in June 2019. She auditioned and was selected again in 2020 to perform in Swan Lake prior to the COVID-19 cancellation of the performance. Hannah’s dream to perform as Clara in The Nutcracker came true in 2019.

She has found a silver lining during this pandemic, and has had the opportunity to learn ballet virtually each week from former and current members of the New York City Ballet. She was accepted into ballet summer intensives for 2021 at the School of American Ballet Young Dancer Program, American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Academy East and NYSSA. Hannah is also a great student, having made high honor roll for all three quarters. She works hard to achieve her big dreams, and hopes to one day dance at Lincoln Center as a member of the New York City Ballet.

Caroline Maloney Caroline is from Wilton. She is 12 years old and in the 7th grade in the South Glens Falls CSD.

Caroline started taking ballet classes at age 7. She performed in the NYCB Coppélia in 2019, and was chosen as an understudy as a gesture for Swan Lake in 2020, although it was cancelled due to COVID. She will be attending the NYSSSA ballet this summer, and was also accepted to the Ballet Academy East’s summer program in the advanced level.

During the stay-at-home directive, Caroline spent countless hours working hard at ballet and taking virtual classes, including attending five weeks of Ballet Academy East and periodically taking zoom classes with Dena Abergel, Children’s Ballet Master of NYCB. She also takes her academics very seriously, and has been a high honors student throughout middle school. She also plays violin in the middle school orchestra and is in the school chorus.

Caroline aspires to be a professional ballet dancer and looks up to her dance teachers – Cristiane Santos, Joan K. Anderson, and Lisa McBride. It has meant so much to her that her teachers formed SSYB, which is where she always wants to be with her dance family.

Akhila Venkat Akhila is a 10th grader at Shenendehowa high school. She fell in love with ballet when she took her first lessons at Austin City Ballet when she was four.

She enjoyed the opportunity to perform with the NYCB at SPAC. When she is not dancing, Akhila loves being outdoors, skiing in the winters and biking in the summers. To de-stress she watches videos and plays the piano.

WASHINGTON COUNTY FAIR

Tons of Fun in ‘21

GREENWICH — The Washington County Fairground is opening the grounds and welcoming the community back to Old Schuylerville Road. This year they are bringing back some old favorites as well as new events to the community after a year of virtual communication.

Food Truck Fridays kick off Friday, May 7 with local band Kelly & Son. Food Truck Fridays will continue every Friday through the end of July.

This spring will also host a delayed celebration of the newly completed Horse Arena with arena lighting made possible by the Glens Falls Foundation in 2020. To celebrate the arena’s completion, the Fairground will be hosting new equine events throughout the 2021 season.

In conjunction with Food Truck Fridays, the second Friday of the month will star Gymkhana Under the Light, a Gymkhana series for all ages.

On Sunday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be the Horse Tack Swap Meet. Admission to the event is a pet food item for the Comfort Food Pantry.

Throughout the day, enjoy demonstrations by the Draft Horse Club and The Tri-County Liberty Club.
