Joe Bettys – Patriot and Traitor

A

pril Fool’s Day, April 1, 1782, Joe Bettys was hanged. It was, as was the custom, a public spectacle, not in Ballston but in Albany where the notorious traitor had been taken for his trial and sentencing. As he got to the top of the scaffolding to meet his maker and a noose was tied around his neck, he jumped—yes, he jumped to his death, ensuring that he would break his neck and ensuring that HE killed himself.

No one else killed him. A fitting ending to a sad story.

Today, on Route 50 about a mile north of the Lakehill Road and Route 50 intersection, sits an old stone house, one that dates back into the 1700’s. It is a striking house today, with its cement walls and a very short upper story. But it was even more striking back in the 1700’s-- and not for its looks.

Living in that house, which also doubled as a local tavern, was the Bettys family. The father and husband of the household was a Loyalist, supporting the British side in the Great Revolutionary War against England. Son Joe, however, was on the opposite side: he was a rebel. One can only imagine the arguments that must have occurred between father and son.

Finally, Joe decided to take some action for his preferred side. He left home and joined the Rebel forces. He traveled into northern New York, joined up with the laterto-be infamous Benedict Arnold in the Lake Champlain area and fought with incredible bravery and skill. In one military engagement, he fought while every one of the rebel commissioned officers had been killed or wounded; then took charge himself and continued to fight on.

Because of all he had done in numerous battles, he felt he should be commended for his service and given an advancement in rank. Angered that he was not, he deserted the rebel forces, went to Canada and joined the British side. He then started carrying spy messages behind the lines from one side to the other.

Yes, for many of the same reasons that Arnold later became a traitor, so did Ballston’s Joe Bettys. And, for many years, he delivered much information to the British side until finally he got caught.

He was sentenced to die but, because of his aged parents and Commander-in-Chief George Washington’s compassion, he was pardoned for his crimes and was told to cease all previous treasonous activities.

After that, he truly seemed to take delight in harassing those who had previously helped him!

He continued his treasonous activities all over the area. A few years later, he was seen lurking in the woods in present-day Clifton Park and, when questioned, he quickly threw a paper in a fire—a paper which turned out to be more secret information he was trying to deliver. He was taken to Albany, tried, convicted, and hanged.

One can only imagine the horror of his family and their reaction to what their family member had done. Because of that, the town of Ballston in conjunction with the Pomeroy Foundation, erected a marker in Hillside Cemetery in Burnt Hills to the memory of Joe Betty’s family. The marker is inscribed: “Bettys Family.

Joseph died 1804 and Abigail died 1791. Local innkeepers and unfortunate parents of Joseph, convicted traitor and spy who was hung in 1782.”

Wesley Community Resumes Indoor and Outdoor Family Visitations SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Wesley Community announced on April 2 that in-person family visitations have officially resumed at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs.

Wesley Health Care Center is currently welcoming families for 40-minute in-person visits with residents on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Families can register online through The Wesley Community’s website. All visits must be scheduled in advance.

In-person family visitations at the senior care facility had been temporarily paused in accordance with New York State health and safety rules and regulations during the Covid19 pandemic. Throughout the pandemic, Wesley has kept families connected through outdoor window visits and virtual visits. Wesley expanded its Life Enrichment staff and technology to help facilitate more than 3,000 online visits since the pandemic

began. Wesley has also provided opportunities for compassionate care visits amongst residents and their families.

Wesley Health Care Center is part of The Wesley Community, a 37-acre continuum of care campus in Saratoga Springs which provides seniors with a variety of levels of care including independent living, assisted living, long-term care, outpatient therapies, short-term rehabilitation and home care.

N.Y. Assisted Living Residents Celebrate Newly Released Visitation Guidelines CLIFTON PARK — The patience of thousands of N.Y. seniors and their families has finally been rewarded with relaxed visitation and communal activities now being authorized by the New York State Department of Health, the regulating agency.

The Department of Health’s new guidelines, issued on March 25, have essentially opened the doors again for over 50,000 residents who call the assisted living community their home. This long-awaited guidance is based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMC) guidelines and allows for

visitation more widely and for residents to go on outings without the heavy burden of having to quarantine for 14 days upon return.

Some particularly significant changes that the new guidance makes, including that visitation and other activities will no longer need to be shut down for 14 days for all residents if there is a new positive resident or staff case, said Lisa Newcomb, Executive Director, Empire State Association of Assisted Living. In addition, standards for group activities and communal dining have been relaxed. These changes mean that residents will be

able to enjoy time with their fellow residents that they call friends, and enjoy all the wonderful amenities and activities provided by their assisted living community.

Empire State Association of Assisted Living is a not-for-profit organization. Founded in 1979, ESAAL is the only association that exclusively represents the assisted living industry, serving 300 Assisted Living Residences, Adult Homes, Enriched Housing Programs and Assisted Living Programs throughout New York State. COURT Edward Kelly, 48, of Glens Falls, was sentenced April 2 to 6 months jail, after pleading to possessing a sexual performance by a child.

Cameron S. Vandusen, 27, of Galway, pleaded March 30 to felony robbery in connection with an incident that occurred in Greenfield. Sentencing scheduled June 11.

Samantha E. Germain, 27, of Greenfield, pleaded April 1 to criminal contempt in the firstdegree. Sentencing June 3.

Crystal M. Hebert, 34, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded April 1 to grand larceny in the thirddegree, in connection with an incident in Saratoga Springs.

Jack Jeffers, 25, of Vorheesville, was sentenced March 30 in Saratoga County Court to serve 4 to 12 years for manslaughter, and 9 years plus 5 years post-release supervision for criminal possession of a weapon, in connection with the death of Michael Ahern of Stillwater. The sentences are to

run concurrently. The Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office and the State Police had conducted an investigation into Ahern’s disappearance, which occurred in January 2019, and “determined Ahern was likely the victim of foul play,” according to a statement released by the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office. Ahern had lived in Stillwater with Jeffers at the time of Ahern’s disappearance. In March 2019, Jeffers was involved in a property accident in the town of Saratoga and was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun – which investigators determined Jeffers had used to kill Ahern.

POLICE Tyson O’Connell, 41, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 3 with misdemeanor DWI, refusal to take a breath test, speed not reasonable or prudent, motor vehicle license violation: no license, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the first-degree, a felony, after being involved in a property damage accident.

Joseph Deschenes, 50, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 3 with criminal trespass.

Jay O’Neill, 36, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 4 with criminal mischief, criminal obstruction of breathing, act in manner injure child less than 17, and seconddegree harassment.

Pamela Altamirano-Enriquez, 31, of Queens, was charged April 4 in Saratoga Springs with obstruct governmental administration.

Ava Maddalla, 20, of Schenectady, was charged April 5 in Saratoga Springs with the following: operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, speeding, unauthorized use of a vehicle, false personation, criminal possession of stolen vehicle, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and tampering with physical evidence as a felony.

Dylan Dixon, 28, of Gansevoort, was charged April 5 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and motor vehicle registration suspended.

Kirby Ives, 44, of Ballston Spa, was charged April 2 in Saratoga Springs with criminal mischief.

Paula Tancredi-Penman, 55, of Wilton, was charged April 1 in Saratoga Springs with making a false written statement, a misdemeanor.

Jose Madera, 39, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 1 with misdemeanor petit larceny.

Matthew Krawczyk, 34, of Ballston Spa, was charged March 29 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a vehicle with a suspended registration, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Mona Nordstrom, 53, of Saratoga Springs, was charged March 15 with misdemeanor assault.

Michelle Bush, 45, of Ballston Spa, was charged March 16 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and a vehicle equipment violation.

Travis Mason, 31, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was charged March 26 in Saratoga Springs with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of

a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, and two motor vehicle violations.

Natalie Pase-Simpson, 20, of Schenectady, was charged March 26 in Saratoga Springs with felony burglary, and misdemeanor assault and criminal mischief.

Douglas Amsler, 31, of Watervliet, was charged March 26 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and a driving violation.

Joshua James, 21, of Greenwich, was charged March 27 in Saratoga Springs with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, and a vehicle equipment violation.

Peter Lushkevich, 40, of Saratoga Springs, was charged March 27 with criminal trespass, a misdemeanor.

City: Curbside Leaf and Lawn Debris Pick Up SARATOGA SPRINGS — Department of Public Works provides curbside leaf and lawn debris pick up. Leaves/lawn clippings must be in a reusable container or paper bag and placed at the curb May 15 to Sept. 30, after which leaves can be raked to the curb in small piles.

Crews will not go on private

property to retrieve or clean up leaves. Small limbs no longer than 3 feet can also be bundled and placed at the curbside. Be sure to keep containers and limb piles to a weight manageable by one person. DPW does not take stumps, lot clearing, tree take-downs on private property, dirt/sod or rocks. Additionally, no plastic bags, and no chemical barrels.

Skidmore College to Host Virtual Event with Dr. Cornel West on Monday SARATOGA SPRINGS — Philosopher, author, activist, social critic and provocative public intellectual Dr. Cornel West will participate in a live conversation with four members of Skidmore College’s expanded academic community.

The event will be livestreamed at 7 p.m. on Monday April 12.

SSPF Historic Homes Tour 2021: Virtually on Mother's Day Weekend SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation presents this year's Historic Homes Tour virtually on Mother's Day Weekend, May 8-9.

The 2021 tour delivers the exclusive opportunity to see interiors of beautiful private homes and buildings, including spaces typically not accessible during an in-person tour. The tour will be available throughout the weekend

allowing viewings during the time of the viewer’s choosing.

While the Porch Party typically kicks off this signature event, this year it will be held on Thursday, June 17 in anticipation of allowing a safe gathering to welcome the summer season and to celebrate the success of the tour. Due to gathering mandates, the Porch Party may have limited attendance - honorary committee members and corporate sponsors

will be guaranteed admittance.

Founded in 1977, the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation is a private, not-for-profit organization that promotes the preservation and enhancement of the architectural, cultural, and landscaped heritage of Saratoga Springs.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — In honor of their 10th anniversary in April, local agency SIX Marketing has launched a “Share What You CAN” Can Drive to benefit the Franklin Community Center.

Tin or aluminum is the traditional 10th anniversary gift, so Saratoga Springs-based SIX Marketing decided their 10th birthday would be the perfect time to hold a can drive.

SIX will donate all canned goods collected to the Franklin Community Center in recognition of the non-profit’s continued dedication to supporting local families both prior to and during COVID-19.

To collect canned goods, SIX and two community partners will set up drop-off boxes outside their locations throughout the Spa City.

Members of the community can donate canned food items at the following locations through April 30.

Those locations are: SIX Marketing (445 Broadway), Battleground Fitness (426 Maple Ave.) and Spoken Boutique (27 Church St.).

To help spread the word about SIX’s “Share What You CAN” Can Drive, participants are encouraged to share a photo of themselves dropping off their donations on social media with the hashtag #sharewhatyouCAN. WISWALL: NEW PLANS FOR OLD PARK

Saratoga TODAY BALLSTON SPA — Wiswall Park is in need of revitalization, but the Village of Ballston Spa needs the community’s help to move the project forward.

The Village of Ballston Spa Park and Tree Board, along with a group of citizens, have been working on a renovation plan for Wiswall Park.

On Nov. 9, 2020, they proposed their concept design at a Village Board meeting. However, they need public feedback before it can be finalized.

The reasons for revitalization listed by the Village of Ballston Spa Park and Tree Board are the invasive plants, dilapidated gazebo and park benches, the awkward location of the spring, uneven paths, and more. Their concept design is based on the park being a quiet retreat for strolling, sitting, visiting, and having lunch. The Board adds that they also want

opinions on moving community events that previously took place at Wiswall Park to other locations in the Village.

Liz Kormos, Trustee and Liaison to the Park and Tree Board, stated that the concerts will be moved to Iron Springs Park and the farmers’ market moved to Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum this summer

to allow for the work to be done.

Movies are still planned for Wiswall Park with Iron Springs Park as the alternate location.

trust. When trust is established, investigators say the suspects ask for photos and/or videos of the teen, usually provocative in nature. Once the videos are secured by these predators, they demand payment, sometimes thousands of dollars, or they threaten to release the images on social media.

At least one case has resulted in a teen victim committing suicide.

State Police offer the following internet safety tips, for teens, or anyone who goes online: For parents - talk to your children about going online and set rules about where and when they are surfing or chatting, and

monitor your children’s social media accounts.

For kids and teens: Be careful what you post. Never share personal information online.

This includes full name, address, or phone number. Don’t accept friend requests from strangers. Don’t open emails, click on links, or download anything from

unknown senders. Never share photos online or through texts or direct message with people you don’t know. If you, or someone you know is having thoughts of harming yourself, talk to someone who can help.

If you feel you have been a victim of this type of crime, contact your local police.

Volatile Year for City Election Begins to Take Shape

SARATOGA SPRINGS — All five seats on the City Council, as well as both supervisor positions, will be up for vote in November.

Of those five council positions, at least four will look different, effectively creating a major overhaul of

governing powers in City Hall.

To date, 11 potential candidates have filed “designated petitions” to run for the five council seats. Six candidates have similarly filed regarding the city’s two supervisor positions up for election.

This week, Democrat Ron Kim announced his candidacy for city mayor.

“We have gone through difficult times. We’ve lost good friends.

We have seen suffering. We have witnessed injustice. As a community we will only recover if we come together,” Kim said, during his announcement staged in front of Saratoga Springs’ 9/11 Memorial in High Rock Park. Former elected city Democrats Peter Martin and Tom McTygue were in attendance.

“I want to help this community come together. I will do it as your next mayor, as the People’s Mayor working for all of us,” Kim said. “In this new post-pandemic era, we need to have a kinder and more effective city government.”

Kim, a local lawyer who served as Saratoga Springs’ Commissioner of Public Safety from 2006 to 2010, said If elected mayor, his top priorities would include building a long-discussed eastside public safety station, assisting city businesses in reopening safely while also developing long-term strategies to protect their viability, “reimagining” the city police force so there is accountability and transparency, and working with federal and state funding to develop green policies that create a carbon neutral Saratoga Springs by 2030.

The position of city mayor is one of several seats on the city council that will be inhabited by new candidates. Eight-term Accounts Commissioner John Franck, fiveterm Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan and two-term Mayor Meg Kelly have each announced they will not seek reelection. Additionally, current Public Safety Commissioner Robin Dalton recently announced she will seek reelection, but that she will do so as a “no party” member, after changing her party registration to no longer being an active member of the GOP. WHO IS RUNNING The 17 designated petitions filed by candidates are aligned with the four currently existing political parties. Recent changes in election law have altered the landscape regarding the number of political parties.

Voters previously registered with the Green, Libertarian, Independence, or SAM party, are now considered No Party (NOP). The four political parties that now remain in New York State are Democratic, Republican, Conservative, and Working Families.

The deadline for candidates to file designated petitions was March 25. Independent petitions - that is, potential candidates interested in running for a city position under a newly created party – may still actively pursue their candidacy. In Saratoga Springs specifically, these independent candidates would need to secure 305 signatures. The timing-window to secure those signatures begins April 13, and they must be filed the week of May 18-25.

What this means is that in addition to the 17 candidates aligned with existing parties vying for seven city seats, additional candidates, independent of the four existing parties, are expected to soon come forward. Of the 17, only three currently hold office and are seeking re-election.

According to the Saratoga County Board of Elections, the 17 candidates who have filed designated petitions, their party affiliation, and the seat they seek is as follows: Mayor: Ronald Kim (D), Heidi Owen (R, C). Accounts: Dillon Moran (D), Samantha Guerra (R,C).

DPW: Domenique Yermolayev (D), Anthony “Skip” Scirocco

INCUMBENT (R, C). Finance: Minita Sanghvi (D), Joanne Kiernan (R,C), Sierra Hunt (WF). Public Safety: James Montagnino (D), Tracey Labelle (R,C). Supervisor seats will be up for vote in nearly all county municipalities in November, as well as an array of council and justice positions. County Sheriff and County Clerk will also be up for vote at Saratoga County.

In Saratoga Springs, among approximately 20,000 registered voters, registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans by about 2,000, according to the most recent (Feb. 21) party affiliation enrollment report from the New York State Board of Elections. That percent breakdown is roughly registered Democrats: 42%, registered Republicans: 32%, registered but unaffiliated with any party: 25%.

City voters registered with the Conservative, and the Working Families parties account for the remaining less than 1%.

Last updated in 2002, the city is inviting community participation in a survey to help update its Open Space Plan. The survey deadline is April 16.

Originally developed in 1994 and updated in 2002, the Open Space Plan for the City of Saratoga Springs included a set of policy recommendations

such as the preservation of wetlands, stream corridors and the development of trail systems aimed at furthering the communities’ vision of the “City in the County.”

Following recommendations from that update, an Open Space bond fund program was created to protect, preserve, enhance, and improve environmentally sensitive, recreational and scenic land.

industrial or institutional use, and may be publicly or privately owned. What land is defined as open space depends in part on its surroundings. A vacant lot or a small marsh can be open space in a big city. A narrow corridor or pathway for walking or bicycling

Survey results will aid Saratoga Springs in updating the 2002 Open Space Plan and establish open space goals for the next five years. The update will inventory open spaces, identify

special areas for protection, and establish priorities and potential funding to guide future acquisition and preservation.

towards Spring

I’m a little nervous to say this...but I think Spring is here!

If you are like me then you are itching to get back on the road or back on the trails and resume running. If your running days are over or you prefer walking, then this article is for you too. Today I would like to talk about Plantar fasciitis, how to treat it and what you can do to minimize your risks of developing it.

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the arch of the foot from the heel to the base of the big toe. The plantar fascia is a continuation of the calf muscle along the achilles tendon into the heel and bottom of the foot.

Plantar fasciitis accounts for around 8% of all running injuries and is common among runners of all ability levels. It is the most common cause of pain on the bottom of the heel and approximately 2 million people are treated each year for this condition. Plantar fasciitis is often diagnosed as an “inflammation” of the plantar fascia, but it may in fact be a degenerative process without inflammation.

The most common risk factors are: 1. Excess Body Mass (i.e. obesity) 2. Prolonged Standing (occupational) 3. Increased running (walking) 4. Lack of ankle dorsiflexion motion (related to excessive heels on sneakers/shoes) 5. Lack of great toe (i.e. big toe) extension motion There are a variety of treatment options recommended but unfortunately there is no clear choice for everyone. Every case is unique. This is a point I would like to make sure is emphasized because unfortunately we make assumptions that the treatment that works best is one that works for everyone. Sure there are similarities, but identifying your specific issue is often the difference of a reasonable outcome with a prolonged agonizing outcome.

Physical therapy is one of the most effective (consistently effective) for those suffering from plantar fasciitis. There are other common treatments, but when I did research and reviewed the actual scientific studies there were only a few consistently effective solutions.

1. Inserts (i.e. orthotics) for 2-12 months (Inserts should be a TEMPORARY SOLUTION...not a long term plan) This can be off the shelf OR custom orthotics.

2. Heavy loading/strength training (foot/calf) 3. Manual therapy (specifically trigger point release techniques) 4. Stretching has only a mild effectiveness at best.

For those of you that know me or have heard me talk, you will know that I advocate for strengthening the foot. This is especially important for plantar fascia health. I prefer to avoid long-term use of inserts because joints that don’t move leads to the muscles that cross them to get weaker. Recent studies have shown that shoes that limit or prevent motion lead to weakness in the muscles of the foot. The same authors have also found that people that use “barefoot” style shoes (no support at all) will see improvement in strength of the foot in a matter of weeks.

Inserts are incredibly helpful at times and similar to how we use splints and casts to protect our bones and joints when they are injured, inserts can serve a similar function. But when we are in a cast for weeks allowing the bone to heal, our muscles atrophy and our joints stiffen. For some people, wearing inserts can have the same effect.

The bottom line: STIFF FEET= WEAK FEET

On the other end of the spectrum you will see a lot of runners wearing shoes with extra cushion. The idea is that more cushion will absorb forces and “protect” us somehow.

Unfortunately this is not the case.

The Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine published a study that concluded, “runners experienced a higher impact peak and increased loading rate with the “maximal” shoes.” They calculated that the “Vertical force impact peak (VFIP) was significantly longer in the soft shoe,” resulting in MORE IMPACT, not less!!

These discoveries may explain why shoes with more cushioning do not protect against impact-related running injuries.

Modern shoes try to manipulate the “natural foot” movements by one of two ways: 1. Controlling motion (i.e. inserts) 2. Controlling shock absorption (i.e. more cushion) Trying to control your feet or use them in an unnatural way may be part of the problem. What we do know is that in the last 50 plus years of trying to manipulate our shoes, there is no evidence of these technologies actually reducing injuries.

Let me direct you back to the main risk factors that are associated with plantar fasciitis that can be addressed with exercise, specifically strengthening of the foot and calf muscles. Physical therapy can help by providing you with exercises to strengthen the muscles that are unique to you and can ensure you progress safely.

If you are experiencing pain at this moment, my therapists and I recommend a full body assessment to ensure you are addressing where you are weak, or where you may have mobility “cheats” that are contributing to your issues. There are a variety of treatment options but unfortunately there is no clear choice for everyone, find a guide because every case is unique!

Questions to Ask a Financial Advisor WHEN YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT HIRING A FINANCIAL ADVISOR, it’s important that you do your

due diligence to help make sure you and your advisor are well matched. Ideally, you and your advisor are both looking to establish a very long-term relationship, and part of that involves being very open and honest about your expectations, and asking probing questions. It’s also very important that your advisor be forthcoming with their expectations. Here is a shortlist of questions to ask.

1. ARE YOU A FIDUCIARY? An advisor who is a fiduciary is legally required to put your interests ahead of their own, and ahead of the interests of their employer.

When the only tool in your toolbelt is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail. An independent advisor will generally have access to a universe of products, and be beholden only to you.

It’s important to consider whether the advisor works for a company with proprietary products to sell. Generally this will be common with insurance and mutual fund companies. Even with the best intentions, if your advisor is limited to, or incentivized for using, their employer’s products, you might not get the result you’re looking for.

There are a few compensation models in the industry, and it’s important for you to know how you will be paying for the services you will receive.

Commission Based – This “eat what you kill” compensation model means that your advisor only gets paid when a transaction takes place, and it had been the traditional model for decades.

It has fallen out of favor with both clients and advisors because of the inherent conflict of interest it presents.

Fee Based – Most advisors now operate under a fee-based structure. What this means is that they charge a stated fee for providing advice, as opposed to earning a sales commission. This fee is often a percentage of the assets they manage, but could also be hourly depending on the scope of work. Since the fee is assessed as a percentage of your balance, it changes as your accounts grow or shrink, and you and your advisor now have the same goal; to be careful stewards of your assets over time.

Because certain important products, like life insurance, are inherently commission-based, a fee-based advisor has the latitude to provide these solutions as well. Here, again, it is important to understand if the advisor is an independent fiduciary.

4. HOW MUCH EDUCATION CAN I EXPECT FROM YOU?

The financial industry is full of jargon and acronyms.

Every client has a different level of financial literacy, and a good advisor will act as an educator to make sure you understand their recommendations. Most advisors don’t intend to talk over your head, but if you find them using language you’re not familiar with, don’t be shy about asking for terms to be defined or strategies to be better explained.

Depending on your needs, there are many other questions you should consider asking. The bottom line, though, is that you feel comfortable asking your advisor anything that you feel is important.

Your advisor will be better suited to meet your expectations if you are clear about what they are, and you won’t be blindsided by any surprises down the line if you are thorough in your interview process.

Good communication is the cornerstone of any relationship, and it’s crucial that you and your advisor are speaking the same language.

was talking with someone recently about what my boy house is like, and I was laughing at the ways that my boys consistently think about things differently than how I do now, or how I did when I was their ages. For example, there are some things that they, as a group, really seem to hate, like: PRINCESS MOVIES, AND DOLLS

My boys have zero interest in any of the Barbietype movies and other princess-y shows that I see listed on Netflix in the kid section, which I get, but the movies and shows they do watch sometimes get a little close to the “princess movie” line than they like, especially when it comes to romance.

Even in their Star Wars and superhero movies, there’s often a romantic subplot and any time they catch a whiff of it they start yelling, “Don’t even think about kissing!” I put “The Little Mermaid” on recently for the little ones, which I know is the kind of movie that tests their patience, but we hadn’t seen it in a while, and I wanted to watch it with them. I thought my seven-year-old actually enjoyed it, as he watched it quietly all the way through, but when Ariel and Eric shared their final kiss, he said, “If this movie was the exact opposite, it would be a lot better.”

They also hate dolls. I’ll never forget how one of my boys had nightmares after seeing my niece’s baby doll with eyes that open and close.

Ever since we started having kids, my husband and I have used car rides as a way of maintaining (or restoring!) our sanity. It’s always been a relief to buckle the kids into the van, especially after a long day of misbehaving — they’re safe and restrained and I have them seated in such a way that I’ve tried to keep apart the boys who cause trouble together. When they were all little, it was heaven.

But as they’ve gotten older, it’s become less and less peaceful to have them all in the van together. They constantly bother each other by pulling on each other’s seat belts, pulling each other’s hair (they all have short hair, but when they’re determined to torment each other, they find a way), throwing things at each other, putting their feet on each other’s seats, sitting too close, sitting too far, having private conversations that they yell at other brothers about wanting to hear … any time all the boys are in the van, I spend a good amount of time yelling at everyone to, “Turn around! Quiet down!

Stop bothering your brother!”

CLEAN CLOTHES, AND BEING WARM When I do the boys’ laundry, I fold it and put it in piles on their desks — this is the signal that they are to put their clothes away. Our laundry set-up is unconventional in that no one has a dresser (there isn’t enough space in their bedrooms); rather, they each have shelves or drawers of their own in the laundry/mudroom. Despite the fact that a couple of them are fairly particular about wanting to have a supply of clean clothes, which would seem to negate the idea that they hate clean clothes, they all are terrible about putting their clothes away in a manner that preserves the clothes’ cleanliness. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found remnants of their pile of clean clothes toppled off their desks onto the floor and then apparently walked on and kicked around for a couple of days. Most of them shove the neatly folded piles onto their shelves or into their drawers, which, as you all know, is not the way to keep things neat and unwrinkled. We had family pictures taken recently and I’d washed everyone’s chosen outfits the night before — it was a special thrill for me that everyone was wearing clean clothes, which isn’t something that could be

They also hate being warm. Every day during the winter they argued with me when I told them that, yes, they need to wear winter coats and pants when they leave the house when it’s colder than 30 degrees.

PLEASANT FAMILY RIDES, AND QUIET OF ANY KIND

They really just seem to hate quiet of any kind. I’ve been marveling recently at how loud our house is — the noise has increased exponentially as the boys have gotten older, and I myself have reached decibels I didn’t know I was capable of in trying to have myself heard over the din.

It could be as much a pack mentality as anything else — each of them on their own can be quiet (I’ve seen it!), and on their own they might not mind a love story every now and again (especially if there are also weapons), and I know some of them have tendencies toward order and cleanliness, but the opinions presented above seem to be ones they can all agree on when they’re together.

Or at least when they’re within earshot of me, and that might be part of it too — they definitely love to drive their mother crazy! I’ll tell you what, though: when I’m not yelling, I’m often laughing — what personalities these kids have! It’s such a privilege to watch them grow up.

Zippy Chippy: The Little Horse That Couldn’t

Saratoga TODAY GREENFIELD CENTER — Children’s author Artie Bennett will be appearing at the birthday celebrations for legendary racehorse Zippy Chippy at Old Friends at Cabin Creek on April 17.

On April 17, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., Old Friends at Cabin Creek will be holding a reopening event and festivities in honor of Zippy Chippy’s 30th birthday (his actual birthday is on April 20).

by Dave Szalay, will be there to read and sign copies of the awardwinning picture-book biography.

“With its powerful message of hope and determination, and its healing dose of humor, it could well be the perfect storybook for our times,” said Bennett.

Zippy Chippy’s legacy is quite an unusual one for a racehorse, as his losing streak is what made him famous. Zippy ran in 100 races during his career, and lost every single one – becoming one of the most losing racehorses in history.

get Zippy and had an emotional attachment to him. Felix then went about entering him in races with tough competition that he knew Zippy couldn’t beat, because Felix did not want anyone else to claim the horse. Zippy was also known to be a troublemaker at the track – stopping mid-race, refusing to leave the gate, biting, etc. Zippy is also banned from almost every track in America. Saratoga Regional YMCA Launches 2021 Annual Campaign

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On April 5, the Saratoga Regional YMCA officially launched its Annual Campaign to ensure that everyone in the community has access to vital community programs and resources.

When the Y’s doors closed in March 2020, the Y pivoted and began providing critical food and hygiene supplies to many struggling individuals and families in need. They offered child care and camps for families that were working and in need of care in the heart of the pandemic. The Y

stayed connected to senior members through phone calls and emails to help prevent social isolation. They found creative ways for community members to stay healthy during the pandemic by providing outdoor and virtual fitness options until they reopened their doors in September.

Support of the 2021 Annual Campaign not only helps the YMCA continue funding critical community work now, but it also helps preserve the organization for the future. This year, the Saratoga Regional YMCA hopes to raise

$250,000. The Annual Campaign provides life-changing experiences, and makes the community stronger through YMCA child care summer camp, aquatics, sports, wellness, and many other vital programs and services, assuring that no one is turned away due to lack of funds.

S.I.S. Announces LongTerm Strategic Plan SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Independent School (S.I.S.) is thrilled to announce the unveiling of their new Strategic Plan that looks to the future of the school through 2025.

With an eye toward their mission at all times, over the past 18 months the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and Parent Association have worked together to thoughtfully develop a strategic plan that will help solidify S.I.S.’s position as the premiere and only independent (non-affiliated) private school in Saratoga County.

Through a multi-phase process, they formed six key areas of focus to enhance, strengthen, and improve the school. Within each key area they created 4-6 action steps, which are broken down into two sections: those to focus

on within the next 18 months and those to accomplish in the next three to five years.

Julie S. Fuller, Board Chair, said “Even in these challenging times, it is important to maintain our ambitious, yet attainable goals, with the aim to strengthen and solidify our position as the premiere and only independent school in Saratoga County. We continue to strive in the spirit of our school’s motto: We take care of ourselves, each other, our school and our community. As the Saratoga Independent School approaches its 30th anniversary next fall, this Strategic Plan will serve as a guiding road map for the future.”

Southern Saratoga Art Society Two featured artists during the months of April and May 2021 in The Gallery of the Clifton Park Senior Center, 6 Clifton Common Blvd., Clifton Park. Faith Weldon and Joan VanAlphen are well known throughout the area, both are members of various art groups and won numerous awards for their pieces. Faith works in several mediums including watercolors, fluid acrylics, collage, and pastels.

She is inspired by the outdoor world and developing paintings from her imagination. Some of her works include Victorian Ladies, wine bottle collages and musicians. Joan paints in both oils and watercolors.

Her passions include abstract painting and working in acrylics.

She especially enjoys painting landscapes and flowers. SSAS member Neil Sergott will be exhibiting at the Mechanicville Public Library, 190 N. Main Street, Mechanicville during March and April. His subject matter is taken from the local Hudson River Valley Region.

inter was hard. Just as I thought I could start to socialize again, new variants of the Coronavirus surfaced, pushing me back into isolation. I found myself feeling haggard from too much work at home, sitting at the computer trying to manage my teaching work and other responsibilities as a college professor alongside running our farm..

I longed to rip open a bag of organic potting soil, fill a tray of 72 seedling cells, and start planting arugula.

But my husband Jim and I have been moving our farm, and with me left responsible for much of the packing, decluttering, and cleanup of our old locale, there was little time or space to make such a dream come true.

turnips, carrots, beets, lettuce, and kale – are widely available. Seedlings for summer crops, along with such vegetables as broccoli, will be available soon at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market at the Wilton Mall on Saturdays and, starting in May, at High Rock Park on Wednesdays.

Last weekend, though, was Easter and its promise of renewal. I celebrated with Jim at the new farm.

We sunk our hands into the soil and began planting rhubarb crowns that had arrived two days earlier. I checked out the seedlings Jim had started under grow lights and marked times in my calendar for when I could help transplant those starts into the ground.

Many gardeners – from novices to experts – came to my market stall last year with stories about their successes – the spicy tang of a radish pulled straight from the ground, the sweetness of a tomato just off the vine – and their failures – the seeds that did not germinate, the rabbits who made the lettuce bed their salad bar. Their celebrations and their laments show how planting seeds is about more than growing food.

It’s also about magic: the healing power of letting our hands touch dirt, the wondrous transformation of a germinating seed to sprout, plant, and fruit.

Last year, many of us fought back pandemic fear by creating what were dubbed “COVID gardens.”

Gardeners planted radishes, turnips, arugula, lettuce, carrots, and peas. They obtained seedlings from such places as the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, along with tips on how to transplant, water and fertilize.

This year, we can tackle combat pandemic fatigue with gardening again.

Seeds for most spring crops – think peas, radishes,

Cornbread compliments roasted chicken and duck, braised greens, balsamic-glazed beets, and many other savory dishes. Or simply slather a slice with local honey or jam and enjoy as a treat.

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• About 2 tablespoons fat (butter, oil, bacon drippings...)

• ½ teaspoon baking soda

• 1 cup flour

• 1 cup buttermilk* (if you choose to use regular milk*, omit baking soda and add another teaspoon of baking powder)

• 1 cup cornmeal* • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons baking powder

• 2 eggs*, beaten

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. While the oven is heating, place fat in cast iron skillet or other baking dish and put skillet/baking dish in the oven.

3. In a bowl, mix dry ingredients with a fork, tossing them to get some air into them.

4. Add wet ingredients quickly and blend until batter is just a bit thicker than pancake batter. Add more milk, if needed.

5. Take the pan out of the oven, swirl sizzling fat quickly to coat the pan, and pour excess into the batter.

It’s time to get planting. Let’s do it together.

6. Mix well, then pour the batter into the hot pan.

Hello my Foodie Friends !

One of our family’s favorite food is pizza, especially Paula’s homemade pizza. Pizza is an excellent all-round family food that every person can personalize and enjoy on the day it is cooked, or the following day (Breakfast Pizza?). It is also a perfect “on the go” food to help with the crazy schedules that we all have. Back in the days before children, pizza was a frequent meal for Paula and me. Our lives were basically like “two ships passing in the night.”

When Paula and I first dated one of our favorite romantic places to eat was an Italian restaurant called Verdolini’s. We were there so much they knew our order when we came in. The waitresses used to elbow each other and fuss over the young lovers. They were planning our wedding even before we even thought about getting married. The lighting and ambiance were straight out of a movie. The whole Verdolini family worked there and when he was old enough, my brother Bill, worked there also. They made a pizza that was different from any pizza I have had before or since. Paula was curious about their ingredients and how it was made.

She would ask and they would say “it’s a secret.” We had my brother Bill, however, as our spy on the inside.

Bill would bring home any leftover pizzas at the end of the night and hand them out to whoever wanted them. He could not manage to get the entire recipe from the owner, but he got enough that he and Paula came close. One of the special parts was baking them in their stone oven. We have tinkered with it over the years, and I think Paula’s pizza is now perfect. That’s the thing about pizza; it’s a personal taste type of food.

The way I like it might be different than the way someone else likes it and that’s ok.

• 1 teaspoon dry yeast

• 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes • 10-12 fresh basil leaves torn

• 5 cups (22 1/2 oz) unbleached all-purpose flour

• 1 3/4 plus 2 tablespoons cool water (65°F) TOPPING: For 6 small pizzas.

• Optional: freshly ground black pepper and grated (shredded) parmesan cheese

• 1 pound fresh mozzarella

Because pizza stones are porous, they absorb odors. Avoid using soap to clean them. Wash with hot water and use baking soda to remove stubborn stains.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 3/4 teaspoons salt

Paula still enjoys making homemade pizza. A key tool that she uses is a pizza stone. When using a pizza stone, the unglazed clay surface absorbs and distributes heat evenly, producing a crispy crust, but this is how to do it correctly: Place a pizza stone in the oven on the lowest rack. Placing the stone in a cold oven is very important because if you put the cold stone into a hot oven, the stone will crack and break–it’s called thermal shock. Allow at least 30 minutes for the stone to heat before you cook the pizza. Let the dough come to room temperature before baking. If cold dough is placed directly on a hot stone, the abrupt change in temperature may also cause the stone to crack.

• 1 tsp dried oregano

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In the bowl of a stand mixer (or a large metal bowl), stir all ingredients together until well combined. If using a stand mixer, fit it with the hook attachment and mix on low for 4 minutes. The flour should form a coarse ball. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes, then mix on medium for 2 more minutes, or until the dough clears the sides of the bowl and sticks just a little to the bottom. If the dough is too soft and sticky, mix in some flour, if it is too stiff add some more water.

2. Transfer the dough to a floured surface, dust the top with flour and working from four corners, fold the dough into a ball. Place in a bowl that has been brushed with olive oil and cover with plastic wrap.

Let it sit at room temperature for 1 hour, to double its size. Then punch a hole in the dough, reshape, place in a bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Remove dough from the fridge 2 hours before using.

(The instructions might sound a little confusing, but the idea is that the dough expands and the gluten in it relaxes). Divide dough into 6 parts. Form 6 balls and brush them with olive oil.

3. Position an oven rack at the lower third of the oven and place pizza stone on it. Heat oven to 450°F. Never place cold pizza stone in a hot oven because it will crack. (If pizza stone is not available, brush pizza pan with some olive oil).

4. Stretch and shape pizza dough into circles, that will fit the pizza stone. Transfer to a well-floured pizza peel (we don’t want pizza to stick to stone). Spread crushed tomatoes into an even layer and top with mozzarella cheese slices.

5. Using a pizza peel, transfer pizza to the pizza stone. (If using a pizza pan, place pizza in the pan and place pan directly on the rack). Bake pizza until edges of the crust turn golden and cheese starts bubbling or for 10-15 minutes.

6. Sprinkle with some thorn basil and dried oregano, grated parmesan cheese (optional), cut & enjoy!

Its mission has been to deliver food to our seniors who did not have reliable transportation to get to a market or food pantry.

Since it’s creation, Elk volunteers have been delivering food to an average of 120 seniors twice a month. Each food delivery contains enough food for at least twelve meals.

Ageless Dancer, Ballet Barre & Balance Series at Dance Museum

LAKE GEORGE — Are you a local artist who would love to show your work in Lake George Village? The Lake George Arts Project is partnering with the Caldwell-Lake George Library to present the work of local artists in their beautiful historic building on Canada Street!

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The National Museum of Dance will begin Session 3 of the Ageless Dancer series the week of April 12. This six-week session, designed for participants ages 55+, will include a new offering, "Swingin' Ballroom," taught by Johnny Martinez. Martinez's class will teach ballroom and Latin dance moves to the music of swing and salsa. No partner is

necessary. Fitness attire, sneakers or soft soled dance shoes are recommended. The class will be held 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, April 14 to May 19. The cost is $36 for six classes.

Mary Anne Fantauzzi will teach Ballet Barre & Balance on Mondays from 1-2 p.m. from April 12 - May 17. Classical ballet technique designed for all level participants will develop core

stabilization, fluidity of movement and balance. Fitness attire and ballet slippers are recommended.

Participants will need a sturdy high back chair or barre. The cost is $36 for six classes.

Tango Fusion Dance Company of Saratoga, Proctors Collaborative Studio Present New Dance Show That Broadcasts Thursday Nights

“In Person” Saratoga Stress Reduction & Management Program Begins at Caffe Lena April 10 SARATOGA SPRINGS — An eight-week course of classes in mindfulness meditation and stress reduction will take place in person - at Caffe Lena, starting Saturday, April 10.

The Saturday Morning Sessions are held 8:30 to 10 a.m. and run April 10 through May 29 and provide instruction in formal mindfulness meditation methods including a body scan, gentle yoga, sitting meditation and walking meditation.

“We know from research that the eight weeks works well for major changes in people’s mental health and well-being. And we do know it creates lasting traits like tolerance, patience, loving kindness, compassion,” says Pierre Zimmerman, of One Roof holistic health center in Saratoga Springs.

The practices offer students a means of self-regulation and encourage the cultivation of greater awareness. Students learn to reduce their particular symptoms of psychological and somatic distress as well as to respond to challenges with less reactivity and greater clarity. The course also provides instruction in informal

mindfulness meditation practices such as being in nature and eating with awareness.

Midway through the course, students learn about the physiology of stress and how it relates to their individual stress reactivity patterns. Using the latest scientific research, we explore how the act of mindful noticing activates innate internal resources that can change our perception of daily events, including stressful ones. This altered appraisal allows students to use a broader range of both internal and external responses so that they need not remain locked in stress patterns.

The Stress Relief & Management program takes place at Caffe Lena, 47 Phila St. Preregistration is required. Masks must be worn at all times, and coronavirus safety measures, including distancing, will be practiced.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Proctors new Collaborative Studio, and Tango Fusion Dance Company of Saratoga have worked together on a new dance show that will be broadcast on Thursday nights.

Tango Fusion Ballroom Dance Show will feature eight episodes at 7 p.m. on Thursday nights through the months of April and May. The eight-part series starts with four beginner Salsa Lessons and will be followed by four beginner Swing Lessons. Each week, Tango Fusion instructors Diane Lachtrupp Martinez and Johnny Martinez will lead a warm-up, review what was taught the week before and add on new steps and techniques. The program will also include some

improvisational social dancing as well as a featured fun fact of the day about the dance.

Viewers do not need to have a partner or experience. The series would also be a good review for dancers who have danced Salsa and Swing before. The series is free to viewers but there is an opportunity to donate to the project.

In addition to the lead instructors, Johnny and Diane, the show features additional professional instructors Juan Soler and Jen Cornell, as well as two college students Lucas Martinez and Alanah Cohen-Tigor.

The goal of the show is to provide entertaining, quality instruction to a new audience of dancers of all ages.

CAMBRIDGE — With a career spanning decades and a dozen albums with Lowen & Navarro, Dan Navarro gets back to touring and performing LIVE shows with a Washington County appearance in Cambridge.

Navarro’s career started as a songwriter, most often with Eric Lowen, for artists as diverse as Pat Benatar (the Grammynominated “We Belong”) The Bangles, Jackson Browne, Dave Edmunds, The Temptations, Dionne Warwick, and others.

In the 1990s and 2000s, he and Lowen recorded and toured as the acclaimed acoustic duo Lowen & Navarro until Lowen’s retirement in 2009. Navarro’s first true studio-recorded album, “Shed My Skin” was released in 2019.

The duo arrived in New York City in the early 1970s and hung around the infamous Max’s Kansas City. “Always interesting people, always good music, decent food; it was a very cool place to hang out.

We actually played there a bunch of times as well. We even opened for Bruce Springsteen there in 1973,” Oates told journalist Chris Epting, co-writer of Oates’ memoir, in a piece published last week by the website Please Kill Me. “Andy (Warhol) would still be there once in a while and we would get to know him really well later on.

But it also became another home away from home for the New York Dolls.” Oates recalled “one frigid December late night,” waiting for his date to show up. “She said she

would come over and meet me, so I settled in on the sofa and began strumming my acoustic guitar to pass the time. 9 o’clock became 10 o’clock became 11 o’clock. No girl. I had been stood up.”

He kept strumming. And adding words. “I started singing this folky little refrain: ‘She’s Gone…Oh I better learn how to face it…She’s Gone Oh I…” The disappointment of getting stood up didn’t last long but that simple melody and chord progression was about go on forever.” The very next day, Oates got together with John Hall and his Wurlitzer electric piano. “The song almost wrote itself through our hands. In less than an hour, ‘She’s Gone’ was born and in a way, so were we.”

McGarrahan scored on a 37 yd TD, and the 2 point conversion was completed by Dow to Max. McGarrahan and Dwyer both scored again in the first quarter. Congrats to this week’s Athlete of the Week – Erik Gottmann!

Erik is a senior at Ballston Spa High School. He will have four varsity letters this year, starting with the ski team. The ski team’s season finished just in time for him to join the wrestling team, a

sport he hadn’t competed in since eighth grade. Erik came away from this year’s wrestling season with eight wins and only one loss. He is currently playing on the football team, and will finish his high school sports career at Ballston Spa with lacrosse at the

end of the school year.

Erik has accomplished all of this while maintaining a 95 GPA. He just received a four-year fulltuition Army ROTC scholarship to the Virginia Military Institute, where he will continue playing lacrosse at the Division I level.

FOX Sports and NYRA Announce Landmark Wagering and Media Rights Agreement SOZONE PARK — ­ FOX Sports, a unit of FOX Corporation (Nasdaq: FOXA, FOX), and the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced an expanded partnership agreement that establishes FOX Sports as the official wagering partner of NYRA Bets and the leading media provider for elite thoroughbred racing. The announcement was made on March 25.

NYRA BETS EQUITY OPTION The prior FOX Sports/NYRA media rights agreement provided a FOX Sports subsidiary with an option to acquire a 25% stake in NYRA Bets, LLC (NYRA Bets), a leading Advance Deposit Wagering (ADW) platform launched in 2016 and available to customers in 30 states across the country. The FOX Sports

subsidiary will exercise this option by the summer of 2021, pending final regulatory approval.

The newly announced agreement provides a FOX Sports subsidiary with a future opportunity to increase its equity interest in NYRA Bets.

MEDIA RIGHTS AGREEMENT The new agreement will extend FOX Sports’ television rights with

NYRA through 2030 and further expand exclusivity for daily racing at Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course.

Under the new deal, FOX Sports expects to air at least 700 hours of coverage each year from Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course, and, outside of prior commitments, gives the network exclusive national broadcast rights for

Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course through 2030. NYRA will serve as the production arm for all horse racing events during the term of the partnership.

The new FOX Sports/NYRA agreement ensures that the Travers will air LIVE on FOX through 2030.

The agreement does not include the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival and the Belmont Stakes.

Sylvie’s sport has been lacrosse from a young age. She started playing on the club ADK Lacrosse team (a team made up of girls from all over the 518 area) in fifth grade. She continued to play for that team right through her senior year of high school, simultaneously being a three-year starter on the Saratoga Springs High School Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse Team.

She also competed in tennis and did alpine skiing.

Throughout her high school career, Sylvie was also able to dedicate time to her schoolwork. Some of her accolades, as listed on her bio on the Boston University Athletics website (goterriers.com) include: Student-Athlete Leadership Team member, National Honor Society, Scholastic Council Leadership Summit attendee, and NYSPHAA Scholar-Athlete.

“Keep working hard, and advocate for yourself... just keep being true to yourself.”

Some of her high school athletic accomplishments include being a two-time US Lacrosse School Girls team member, Under Armour All-American Team, and Northstar Invitational Leadership award recipient.

Then, she was recruited by Head Coach Lauren Morton for Boston University.

“I was being recruited by Boston University, and a month later I was on their campus getting a tour,” said Sylvie. “I was comparing all my other college visits to Boston University.”

Originally, Sylvie was being recruited by Coach Morton for Duke University, where she was the head coach of the women’s lacrosse program there until 2018.

Now, Sylvie is an attacker on the Boston University Women’s Lacrosse Team, and one of nine freshmen. She got her first minutes of playing time in their game against

Lafyette on Easter Sunday. It was her first time on the field since COVID took away her senior season, and since she had hip surgery in May. Sylvie plans to major in journalism and minor in business.

She says that her transition from high school to college, not just in sports, but in general, was facilitated by the connections she made at Saratoga Springs High School. She recounted meeting people at college who knew people from her high school, and said that going to a big school really prepared her for a big university.

To any high school athlete looking to go on and play sports in college, she gives this advice: “Keep working hard, and advocate for yourself. When the time is right it will happen, just keep being true to yourself.”

BALLSTON SPA PEDESTRIAN & BICYCLE MASTER PLAN PROJECT LAUNCHES INTERACTIVE WEBSITE

BALLSTON SPA — Village of Ballston Spa is conducting a Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan and Linkage Study.

The Village, with consultants VHB and Planning 4 Places, and the Capital District Transportation Committee are developing a master plan for a multi-use pedestrian and bicycle access and a link from the Zim Smith Trail to downtown Ballston Spa. The Ballston Spa Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan (The Plan) will help the Village continue to pursue its goals of promoting economic development, improving

safety, and creating a connected and integrated transportation network for users of all ages and abilities. The Plan will provide clear direction on priority locations and desired design treatments for repair and construction of sidewalks, bike paths, street restriping, signage, repaving or reconstruction projects, based on a representative public input process.
