TV’s “American Pickers” to SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust has given a $25,000 grant to the First Baptist Church to support the restoration of its stained glass windows. The First Baptist Church is the oldest congregation in Saratoga Springs, founded in 1793. The Greek Revival church at 45 Washington St. was built in 1855, to replace the original church on the site. In 2018, the congregation of 30 members undertook a capital campaign to restore the windows, installed in 1906, most in need of repair. The congregation partnered with the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation to raise $50,000 for phase one to restore the character defining features of this landmark historic building. “The Foundation felt it was important to assist the congregation with preserving their historic building that so many in the community appreciate,” said Samantha Bosshart, executive director of the Preservation Foundation. The $25,000 gift from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust will underwrite the restoration of the Hewitt window in the sanctuary. With this most

recent grant, the congregation has nearly reached its $50,000 goal, which will include the Good Shepherd and two Lady in Aid windows located on the primary façade as well as the Granger and Hewitt windows in the sanctuary. In addition, all five windows will receive new vented glass protection. The church is home of the congregation of the First Baptist Church and the congregation of Terra Nova. Both churches host a variety of mission and social services at the building and work with adult and youth homeless populations, community self-help groups, and the women’s shelter. The project is anticipated to start in April. The congregation seeks to raise an additional $2,000 to meet its goal. Anyone interested in making a contribution to help the church reach its goal can do so through the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation either by phone 518-587-5030 or online at www. saratogapreservation.org (please note “FBC” under donation note). For more information about the restoration or to schedule a tour of the sanctuary, contact the First Baptist Church 518-584-6301.
