Who: Kelsey Whalen Where: Whole Harvest Co. Q. Where are you from originally?

A. Saratoga. I was raised here.

Q. You opened Whole Harvest Company last Thursday. How long have you been planning to open your own business?

A. About four years.

Q. What is your background?

A. Dietetics and business. I saw the need for this in Saratoga, so we thought we’d add to the community here, supporting local businesses and local farms.

Q.How has Saratoga changed since you were a child?

A. It’s become so developed! And there are so many new people and new faces here, which is wonderful.

I think the community has stayed the same.

Even though we’re growing, we’re still a tight-knit community. I love it here.

Q. What sort of questions do you get from customers?

A. We have a good amount of clientele who eat gluten-free, so we accommodate them. And a lot of vegan. We’re primarily vegan and gluten-free, but then we do have local chicken, cheese and eggs on the menu because a lot of people bring in someone who is not a vegan, and we like to have that option for them.

Q. What would you like to see more of in Saratoga?

A. More healthy options. The more the merrier.

OPEN Stewart’s Plans BURNING Expansions Statewide BANNED UNTIL MAY

SARATOGA COUNTY — A burn ban in New York took effect on March 16 and will last until May 14. With spring in full swing, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos reminded residents on March 12 that conditions for wildfires will become heightened.

Even though much of the state is currently blanketed in snow, warming temperatures can quickly cause wildfire conditions to arise.

The DEC posts daily a fire danger rating map and forecast during fire season on its website and on the NY Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife App available on DEC’s website.

Currently, wildfire conditions in the state are low risk.

Historically, open burning of debris is the largest single cause of spring wildfires in New York State.

When temperatures are warmer and the past fall’s debris, dead grass, and leaves dry out, wildfires can start and spread easily and be

further fueled by winds and a lack of green vegetation.

“While many people associate wildfires with the western United States, the start of spring weather and the potential for dry conditions increases the risk for wildfires in New York,” Commissioner Seggos said.

“New York prohibits residential burning during the coming high-risk fire season to reduce wildfires and protect people, property, and natural resources. The ban has been extremely effective in reducing the number of wildfires, and we’re encouraging New Yorkers to put safety first.”

Violators of the state’s open burning regulation are subject to both criminal and civil enforcement actions, with a minimum fine of $500 for a first offense. To report environmental law violations call 1-800-TIPP DEC (1-800-847-7332), or report online on DEC’s website.

CAPITAL REGION — Stewart’s Shops plans to build 20 new shops and rebuild 16 existing ones this year. According to Erica Komoroske, a spokesperson for Stewart’s Shops headquarted in Malta, for rebuilds, Stewart’s Shops corp. plans to buy the adjacent parcel next to the locations in order to expand roughly 1,000 square-feet.

“Usually they’re about 2,500 square feet, our older shops…

They'll go to like 3,500 to 3,800 square feet in some cases,” Komoroske said. Depending on the store, the expansion could be the parking lot or the store itself.

Komoroske says that the rebuilds range from Albany to Peru, NY and up to the Canadian border but could not disclose where because the purchasing and planning process varies from town to town. The expansion is focused in New York, instead of Vermont, where Stewart’s also has shops.

Four confirmed new locations are in Oswego, New Windsor, Yorkville and Albany.

Louise Herring

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Louise Herring aka “Ma Herring” or “Weezy”, age 77, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on April 23, 1941 in Thomasville, GA, the daughter of the late Walter Ivey and Lou Springs Ivey.

Louise was a proud homemaker and gracious hostess, always welcoming friends and family to the table in her loving home. She had a gift of joy, that was shown through her love and laughter.

Louise devoted her life to her children and helping others, her home was open to all for a good meal. Louise also enjoyed going to the casinos, the lotto and playing spades, but her most precious and cherished time was with her family.

Louise is survived by her five children, Tina Herring, Walter Herring, Robert Herring Jr., Sonya Hall, Tonya Perrington; sisters, Sarah Goodwine, Dorris Harris; grandchildren,

Christopher Herring, Ramiliah Johnson, Dayshawn Herring, Johntay Jones, Zyaire Mays, Jeanetta Davies, Nigeria Davies, Kayla Dunn, Logan Dunn, Tyler Kraus, Jalen Hall, Ethan Dunn, Michael Green, Kendrick Herring, Ivey Herring; great-grandchildren, Jalik Brown, Jerimiah Greco, Zaliyah Mays and many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her dearly.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Herring Sr..

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Harry Lindman and his staff for their love, care and compassion for Louise during her illness.

POLICE Joel M. Burgess, 39, of Milton, was charged March 14 with criminal contempt in the first-degree, and criminal mischief in the thirddegree, both felonies, two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child, harassment in the second-degree, and resisting arrest. Burgess

was arraigned and sent to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility in lieu of $20,000 cash, or $40,000 bail.

Ilnur K. Mason, of Milton, was charged March 15 with robbery, and criminal mischief – both felonies, and the following misdemeanors: two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful imprisonment, and assault, in connection with an alleged domestic dispute.

Stephen J. Miller, 40, of Gansevoort, was charged March 12 with the misdemeanors endangering the welfare of a child and assault, and the felonies criminal contempt and criminal mischief in connection with an alleged domestic dispute.

John M. Palus, 67, of Ballston Spa, was charged March 12 with menacing in the second-degree, following an alleged incident that occurred at the Stewart’s in the Town of Milton. Palus is accused of intentionally placing another person in reasonable fear of physical injury by displaying a holstered pistol, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Department.

BLOTTER 5 He was released on an appearance ticket and will return to the Milton Town Court on a later date.

Alyssa Bridge, 26, was charged March 11 with DWI, aggravated DWI, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, following a traffic stop on Caroline Street.

Chelsea O’Connor, 26, of Crown Point, was charged March 14 with operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, and failure to obey a traffic device.

Damian Sprague, 25, of Moriah Center, was charged March 14 with criminal possession of a weapon, with a prior conviction rising to a felony.

Christopher Nichols, 27, of Saratoga Springs, was charged March 16 with criminal possession of stolen property.

Paul Rodriguez, 37, of Saratoga Springs, was charged March 16 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle on a public highway while using a mobile phone.

Michael Gathen, 35, of Niskayuna, was charged March 16 with assault in the third-degree.

Shawn Hurlburt, 34, of Mechanicville, was charged March 17 with unreasonable speed, failure to stop at a stop sign, moving from lane unsafely and misdemeanor DWI, after being involved in a property damage accident on Hamilton Street.

Anthony Delaurie, 42, of Gansevoort, was charged

March 17 with misdemeanor DWI, misdemeanor aggravated DWI, operating a motor vehicle without an inspection certificate, and a vehicle equipment violation, following a traffic stop on Phila Street.

EricWeinstein,24,ofVorheesville, was charged March 17 with second degree assault, unlawful imprisonment – a felony, and criminal obstruction of breathing/ or blood circulation.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — 4-H of Saratoga County has announced that the 45th Annual Walkathon will be held on May 11 at the Orenda Springs in the Saratoga State Park. This event is open to the public and welcomes support from community members and businesses.

There will be food, games, and music. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.; the walk will commence around 10:15 a.m. Donations of any amount will be accepted with a special commemorative T-shirt given to those generous enough to donate $50 or more. All proceeds to benefit the 4-H Training Center

QUEENSBURY — Supported by a $175,000 Innovation Grant from Adirondack Health Institute, Hudson Headwaters Health Network, in partnership with Comfort Food Community, announces the launch of a Food Farmacy program. This year-long pilot program will offer education and access to fresh produce to a group of healthcare consumers learning to better manage their diabetes.

Hudson Headwaters will recruit and enroll individuals who have diabetes, and meet other program requirements, into the program. From that point, the network’s care managers and nutritionist—supported by a team of additional healthcare

professionals—will work with each program participant to tailor dietary guidelines specifically for their condition, medications, lifestyle and goals.

The Comfort Food Community, in collaboration with local farms, will then assist each participant in obtaining the foods “prescribed” for them and managing their progress. Participants will develop knowledge and skills in five important areas that support healthy eating habits.

The pilot program will run through 2019. Program staff will evaluate the results of the pilot to determine the possibility of wider adoption in the future.

SARATOGA — In 2018, Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) launched a new end- of-year fundraising program titled Give4Kids Matching Campaign in its continued effort to support local youth centers in the communities it serves. The campaign raised an impressive $25,520 from both member donors

and sponsors in its inaugural year.

This year’s proceeds were donated to the Saratoga Regional YMCA Corinth Branch’s After School Enrichment Program and the Glens Falls Area Youth Center.

A donation will also be made to the Cohoes Community Center when it reopens. Each location received a total of $8,500 to help support

their efforts in the community.

From October through December, HRCCU members donated a total of $5,840 through a combination of in-branch donations, raffles and an online GoFundMe page. An additional $7,100 was raised from 16 corporate sponsors.

All donations were matched dollarfor-dollar by HRCCU.

Since 2014, the one-hour program entitled, “Social Security Made Easy” has gained widespread recognition across the Upstate New York region in an effort to help attendees better prepare for their transition into retirement.

Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner…I Won the Lottery

YES, you read that right, I won the lottery! Well, not The lottery, but A lottery. We all did, because we were born in the greatest nation on Earth.

There are reasons people from around the globe flock to the good old USA, and it isn’t because we make great cheese steaks (but if you haven’t tried a classic Philadelphia

cheese steak, you don’t know what you are missing!). It is because in 1776 our founding fathers, guided

by Divine Inspiration, created one of the greatest documents ever written: The Constitution of the United States.

Consisting of just 7 Articles, and 27 Amendments, this simple yet magnificent document establishes justice, insures domestic tranquility, provides for the common defence (sic), promotes the general welfare and secures the blessings of liberty for all of us. Thank you, James Madison, Et al.

But if we live in one of the greatest nations on Earth, why are we trapped in a never-ending cycle of news which portrays Americans bashing the very system that allows them the freedom to bash it? In countless countries throughout the world this type of behavior would lead to those naughty boys and girls disappearing for a LONG

time. Coincidentally the majority of ‘those’ countries are Socialist, Communist and Marxist, the very form of government these naughty individuals claim to desire.

I just read that we rank 17th in the world in education which I found hard to believe, but the aforementioned individuals seem to prove that correct. Perhaps we need to reevaluate our teachings of history, for “A well-instructed people alone can be permanently a free people.” Thank you again, James Madison. No truer words seem to have been spoken.

Unfortunately, I am running out of room in our limited space, and I don’t want to end without highlighting a few examples of our U.S. blessings: GENEROSITY: America is the most generous nation on Earth with our money, resources and people. When bad stuff happens, the planet looks to us for help.

MILITARY DOMINANCE: We have the world’s strongest and most dedicated fighting force. We stop evil in its tracks, protect the weak, and guard against threats to world peace.

HEALTHCARE: There is a reason people come to the United States when they need high-quality health care. Eleven of the twenty best hospitals in the world are located within our borders.

TECHNOLOGY: Depending on which list you use; the United States ranks as one of the top few. Afterall, where did Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook come from? Google it for the answer.

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM: See the first Amendment.

SAFETY: If it wasn’t For Detroit, Baltimore and Chicago, we would probably rank in the top 10!

ECONOMIC FREEDOM: We have the strongest GDP, as well as the most disposable income per capita. Next time you are buying a pair of Nikes or that stylish new purse, thank the wheels of capitalism.

GROCERIES: I went to the grocery store last week and there was an entire aisle dedicated to chips and crackers…

Chips and Crackers! If you want to wait in lines for bread, move to Venezuela and try out socialism.

To end, I want to remind everyone that the United States of America is a Republic, not a Democracy. If you don’t believe me, recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

BALLSTON SPA ELECTS NEW MAYOR AND TWO TRUSTEES

BALLSTON SPA — Ballston Spa Village elections took on place March 19. The village voted on a new mayor and two trustee positions.

Residents elected Larry Woolbright as the new mayor, succeeding John Romano who has been mayor for nearly 25 years. Woolbright received 651 votes; his term begins April 1.

Woolbright ran as a Republican under the campaign motto “Deliver4BSpa.” Running under the same motto was Peter Martin and Rory O’Connor; however, they did not win the two open trustee seats.

Liz Kormos and Christine M. Fitzpatrick ran under a new party called “A Better BSpa,” and won with 300 votes and 312, respectively. Martin received 434 and O’Connor received 398.

“Last night did not go the way we hoped, but we are so thankful for every single voter who did turn out for us yesterday. Moving forward, those elected to the village board must take action, get finances settled while protecting the services Ballston Spa residents deserve including our police and fire department,” a Facebook post read from Deliver4BSpa on March 20 and pictured O’Connor and Martin.

“The election marks a turning point for the Village. No longer will people be excluded

from participating in Village government because they are the wrong party or haven't been here long enough. Along with Noah Shaw and Shawn Raymond, we will let the sunshine into Village Hall…

Together we will steer Ballston Spa toward the goals of financial health, repair our infrastructure and redevelop existing properties.

We will address public safety and make Ballston Spa a place welcoming to people of all ages and abilities,” a Facebook post says

Care For Kids Campaign Raises $1,000 for Saratoga Hospital’s Pediatric Care BALLSTON SPA — TCT Federal Credit Union’s Care for Kids campaign raised $2,000 to benefit pediatric healthcare at two hospitals within their service area of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties. Saratoga Hospital Staff received a $1,000 monetary donation along with dozens of stuffed animals for pediatric patients in their care.

“The TCT Care for Kids Campaign has been a success thanks to the generosity of our members and staff. Through their donations, we’re able to support the remarkable pediatric care at our area’s hospitals,” said Curt Cecala, TCT Federal Credit Union CEO.

TCT and their members have a long history of raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, which supports the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center. Expanding upon that success, TCT wanted to help pediatric patients at hospitals in their tri-county service area as well.

Funds were raised by donations from Credit Union Members and Staff. For a $10.00 donation, donors received Mosely Moose, the TCT Care for Kids stuffed animal for 2018. The 2019 TCT Care for Kids Campaign kicked off this March with the arrival of Glitzy Nan the unicorn.

Donations are being accepted through April (while supplies last), at any of TCT’s four branches.

Stewart’s Holiday Match Has Record Year and Distributes Over $2 Million CAPITAL REGION — A record-breaking Holiday Match season leads to a record amount of checks in the mail to local children’s charities. Funding has now been allocated to 1,830 organizations across the communities where Stewart’s Shops are located. That’s 50 more organizations than last year.

From Thanksgiving Day through Christmas Day, customers donated more than $1.03 million to the program, which was doubled to more than $2.06 million with the Stewart’s match. There are no administrative costs with this program, meaning 100 percent of the funds collected and matched benefit these organizations.

“The Stewart’s Holiday Match program is unique because it extends the generosity of the holiday season throughout the

entire year by supporting children’s charities that help children year round,” says Stewart’s Foundation President Susan Dake.

The Stewart’s Holiday Match program has now allocated more than $28 million since the program’s inception in 1986.

The success of the program is credited to Stewart’s customers for their generous contributions, dedicated shop partners who worked diligently to collect the funds, and to the media partners who helped spread the word.

BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and the Saratoga County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) is helping Core Tech Industrial Corp. plan for a proposed expansion that would cost $2 Million. Core Tech is seeking $418,000 in tax breaks through the IDA, according to SEDC president Denis Brobston.

The SEDC is assisting Core Tech through the application process in Ballston.

Core Tech, located at 2 McCrea Hill Rd. in Ballston Spa, is a manufacturing business that

develops and engineers parts for the power market. They have built gas-fired, solar and wind turbines for General Electric and others.

Core Tech is planning to build a 30,000 square-foot detached manufacturing facility in Corporate Tech Park, in the lot adjacent to Core Tech’s current site.

“So this is a retention of the existing company because if they don’t keep investing here then they invest somewhere else,” said Brobston. He adds that Core Tech has been approached aggressively from states throughout the country pitching to have expansion done in a new location.

You’re also seeing the growth of the tax base; most of that goes to the school district. And the other thing is when you’re growing these types of jobs it is possible for someone to move into the area to take a job but usually you find people from here that want those jobs,” Brobston said.

The IDA is holding a public hearing on April 8 at Ballston Town Hall at 8 a.m. The IDA could approve the project after the public hearing at their regular meeting, immediately following the public hearing.

Southern Adirondack Independent Living Appoints New Executive Director BALLSTON SPA — The Board of Directors of Southern Adirondack Independent Living (SAIL) has named Marti Burnley as the Executive Director of SAIL. Burnley will be responsible for overseeing the overall operations of SAIL, new business development, community relations and outreach.

Burnley has over three decades of experience. She brings

a wealth of knowledge in human resources, human services and workforce development to SAIL, according to SAIL President David Bogue.

The Board has also announced the appointment of Jocelyn Blanchard to the newly created position of Chief of Operations and Anna Livingston to the newly created position of Chief of Administration.

Saratoga Casino Hotel Reaches New 7-Year Agreement with the Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Casino Hotel has recently agreed to terms with the Saratoga Harness Horsepersons Association that guarantees harness racing at Saratoga for the next 7 years. In principle, the deal will guarantee 170 annual race dates and purse funding each year, through 2025.

Prior to the addition of New York State's debut VLT facility, purses at Saratoga Harness were $2.9 Million over a 129-day race meet. Since the introduction of gaming in 2004, over $150 Million has been directly added

to purses at Saratoga Harness through VLT revenues.

The Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association (SHHA), which represents 850 owners, trainers, drivers and grooms directly involved at Saratoga Harness, cited the longstanding history with the track as an essential building block for this agreement.

JON DORFLINGER: Creating a Community of Artists Through Film HOLLYWOOD KNOCKS

for Saratoga TODAY JON DORFLINGER is waiting for the stars to align.

Whether he’s teaching full-time in Ballston Spa, running his Saratoga Film Academy, or spending time with his two daughters, his hands are always full as he’s looking for his next big step.

At age 11, Dorflinger became intrigued by his family’s video camera and started experimenting with “motion pictures.”

“I would make silly videos parodying SNL sketches, commercials and music videos,” he recalls. “When I started 10th grade at Saratoga High School, there were no media or film classes. There wasn’t even a photography class. I would satisfy every class assignment could by making a video. I was hooked and found my passion.”

After graduating from SSHS in 1996, Dorflinger dove further into film and media at St. Michael’s College in Vermont, where he landed an internship at a CBS affiliate. He covered local sports and got a gig as a freelance reporter for the Burlington Catholic Diocese’s public access television show, experiences he credits his professors with helping him to get.

After graduating from St. Michael’s, Dorflinger freelanced in Thailand for nine months, producing several video projects for various American mission groups and the local college there, Payap University. “I was thrown out in the wild and learning on the fly.”

“Thailand had a huge part in shaping my world view and understanding who I am as a person,” says Dorflinger. “It was the most important learning experience of my life.”

After his adventure in Thailand, Dorflinger entered the University of Southern California’s USC’s summer filmmaking program to build his portfolio as a director for USC’s MFA program in film. Upon returning home, he learned that director Gary Ross was coming to Saratoga to shoot Sea Biscuit and would be hiring locals to assist.

The portfolio of work he had assembled at USC made him stand out. “I was hired on the movie and my Hollywood career started,” he says.

Over six years, he worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest names — such as Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Bradley Cooper — while assisting in the production of such films as The Terminal, Team America, and Memoirs of a Geisha. After working for two years at Warner Brothers and working for writer/director Tom Brady, he left Hollywood in 2007 to enter UCLA’s Professional Screenwriting Program and start writing scripts.

After writing three films, Dorflinger decided to go into teaching, a route that took him back to USC for his masters in teaching.

With that degree in hand, along with two years of experience teaching in LA’s inner city, he returned to Saratoga Springs and confronted the challenge of finding a teaching job in the areas he loved. He got his break at Saratoga Independent School, which commissioned him to launch an after-school program in filmmaking.

“By the second day, the students were asking if they could keep taking the class after the six weeks,” he says. “At that moment, I knew I had something special.”

YMCA FOR ARTISTS This was the birth of the Saratoga Film Academy, which since 2015 has served 400 students, offering weekend workshops, film competitions, special screenings, lectures, and film-production programs lasting six to 24 weeks. In the 24-week program, each student individually writes and directs

an original short film, even to the point of auditioning and casting actors from the local area.

“Students who have artistic interests don’t have many opportunities to express that side of themselves,” says Dorflinger.

“We give kids the opportunity to not only exercise their creativity, but also find their tribe of likeminded creative people. They find a place where they feel they belong, meeting other artists and people with common interests.”

“There are adults in Hollywood who don’t know what their voice is,” Dorflinger continues. “Once you find that voice and harness it, your artistic expression becomes rich.”

Dorflinger sees the academy evolving into an education center and conservatory, as well as a space that offers expertise and resources to grow an amateur and professional artistic community.

“A YMCA for artists,” he calls it.

“I would love to begin exploring and offering programming in VR production, video game design, CGI special fx design, and computer animation. With a growing demand for my production services, I’m currently in the process of separating those services into a sister production company.”

Dorflinger thinks Saratoga Springs has the potential to become a national center for filmmaking and the digital arts.

“Now that we have the ability to produce, market, and distribute video content from anywhere, the need for a corporate Hollywood machine is less important,” Dorflinger notes. “There are filmmakers all over the country and now you can acquire the knowledge, skills and have access to the resources here in Saratoga.”

“What matters most -- above dollars and cents and high end production quality — is quality of the storytelling and writing. If I can be an influencer to help artists to find their voice and improve their creative writing, everything else will follow.”

THE POWER OF FILM AND MEDIA Dorflinger credits his parents as the biggest influencers in his life.

“Both of my parents instilled in me

a deep empathy and appreciation for life, liberty, and justice. My mother gave me my love for the arts and creative cognitions. My father gave me a more practical orientation, and a strength in my spirit, mind, and body.”

“Early on as a child and adolescent I witnessed how people responded to my work,” he continues. “I sensed how TV and film moved me emotionally and influenced my thinking. I saw the power of film and media on our society, and I wanted to apply it as a positive force in the world.”

In addition to running The Saratoga Film Academy, Dorflinger works with students at Ballston Spa High School, where he has an appointment as Proctor’s Media Arts Teacher.

Among releases scheduled for this spring: a short documentary, “Unconditional,” and a four-part online documentary series about the Saratoga Dance Lab. He recently started shooting a documentary series focused on the Palmertown Range initiative that Saratoga PLAN and the Open Space Institute are spearheading and is looking forward to soon finishing a documentary about Farmstead Catering, which operates on a 170-acre farm in the heart of the Adirondacks in Essex County.

“I’ll also be going into production on an original screenplay I wrote this year,” he adds.

ADVICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE “Define what it is you want to do,” he encourages his students.

“If you’re choosing a path based on financial gain, personal relationships, or personal accolades, you’ll find yourself unsatisfied in life. When you decide to do that thing you would be willing to do for free and make a career out of it, you will find true happiness. The sooner you can determine your passion and the thing that drives you, commit to it, and the path to success will begin to unfold for you.”

“Between teaching, freelance production, and running my business I have never worked harder in my life, but it never feels like work because I love what I do,” Dorflinger says. “When you are passionate about what you do, you push yourself harder than you believe you can, work tirelessly to achieve perfection, and always strive to improve and get better.”

A junior in Jill Cowburn’s journalism class at Saratoga Springs High School, Emma’s career interests include teaching, physical therapy, technical theatre and design, and psychology. She’s active in swimming, lighting design, and poetry. “I also enjoy spending time with my cats,” she says.

BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa High School Troupe proudly presents “Newsies,” a family-friendly musical based on the 1992 Disney movie, as their spring production.

The cast of 42 students will take you back to 1899, telling the story of Jack Kelly (Harrison

Martinez), a charismatic newsboy and his fellow newsboys as they dream of a better life.

The story shows how they band together with reporter Katherine Plummer (Molly Filburn) to strike against the big newspaper publisher Pulitzer (Peter Evans) for what is right.

Performances are scheduled for March 21-22 at 7 p.m. and March 23 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Ballston Spa High School auditorium, 220 Ballston Ave. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for students and available at the door.

SCHUYLERVILLE — An event during the school’s annual “Foreign Language Week” students competed in groups in a lip sync battle, where they performed notable hits. Features included hits from the move “The Trolls,” “Toxic,” by Britney Spears and hits from “The Greatest Showman,” which tied for second

place. The competitors were not only competing for monetary value for their programs, but for a midterm grade as well.

The admission fees went to fund college scholarships that the participants will be eligible for.

Branding Expert Deb Kelly to Speak at Skidmore SARATOGA SPRINGS — Deb Kelly, a 1968 graduate of Skidmore College and a partner at Denver-based strategic-creative consultancy, Genesis, Inc., will deliver the 35th annual F. William Harder Lecture, “Brands in Space: Launch Planning Reaches New Heights.” Kelly has been a partner of Genesis Inc. since 1995. Kelly will tell the story of how a small brand agency is helping a space technologies client pull several brands together into a cohesive construct, creating awareness of the formation of something new and more powerful. She

will discuss the business and communications challenges and offer a rare glimpse inside a project as it is unfolding. SPAC Announces Expanded Educational Programming for 2019 Season Featuring Collaborations with Resident Companies: New York City Ballet, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center SARATOGA SPRINGS — Since 2016, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center has expanded its education and outreach programs from serving 5,000 individuals to more than 38,000 individuals in 2018. At SPAC’s March Board meeting, the Center announced its objective to double that amount by 2020 with several new and expanded program offerings.

Highlighting the 2019 educational

programming is SPAC’s new “Ballet in Fifth” program, a collaboration with New York City Ballet and Saratoga Springs City Schools and the second annual “Festival of Young Artists,” which celebrates the collaborative creativity of more than 400 of the Capital Region’s brightest young dancers, musicians, singers, poets, and visual artists.

“Our educational activities and community outreach have

grown exponentially in a mere two years. By 2020, we plan to double the reach of our free arts programming to not only increase our community’s access to world-class performances, but also to cultivate the next generation of arts lovers and patrons,” said Elizabeth Sobol, president and CEO of Saratoga Performing Arts Center. “There are countless studies that show that students who are exposed

to cultural institutions, like performing arts centers, not only have higher levels of engagement with the arts but display greater tolerance, empathy, as well as better educational memory and critical thinking skills.”

This season also marks the first time that SPAC has offered educational programming in collaboration with all three of its resident companies. New York City Ballet will partner with

SPAC and the National Museum of Dance for the new “Ballet in Fifth” program; The Philadelphia Orchestra will bring its popular “PlayIN” on SPAC’s stage led by Music Director Yannick NézetSéguin. In addition its “Sounds All Around” program for young children, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will present its “Meet the Music: Leave it to Ludwig” program for families at SPAC.

“I like cooking and I like feeding people,” she says. “When people come back and tell me how much they enjoy the food, I feel good.”

Samman calls her business Petra, after the ancient city in Jordan, where she is from. She started the business as a farmers’ market enterprise and joined the Saratoga Farmers’ Market in 2018.

Petra is an ancient city, known for beauty and historical significance. For Samman, it is like a taste of home.

Samman’s early work years were at a desk. She left that life and in 2014 started a restaurant, the Falafel Den, in Saratoga. The long hours of restaurant work tired her out, so she sold her share in the business to her partners.

Still, she wanted to keep cooking.

As she developed Petra, she realized it was a perfect fit. She could cook in a creative way, with more time for herself.

She initially began offering pocket pies, which were modeled after a food common in and around Jordan. The pies, like the accompanying recipe, were made with a pizza dough; filled with combinations of vegetable, cheese and meats; seasoned with spice blends of the Mediterranean; folded at the top; and then baked.

Samman has always liked to surprise market goers with different ingredients and styles of snack or lunch foods. Along with pocket pies, she has brought salads and gyros to the market in the past. She looks forward to mixing things up with sub rolls and fillings and plans to offer chicken and vegetarian combinations this spring.

Response to her Philly steak sandwiches has been quite favorable, she says.

For her, the cooking and the selling come together as a pleasurable experience. “It’s meditative and soothing,” she says. “And when I’m done, I feel refreshed.”

Meat Pies INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 1 pound ground beef* • 1/2 pound ground lamb* (or add another 1/2 pound of ground beef instead) • 1 white onion*, finely chopped • 3 tablespoons olive oil* • 3/4 cup pine nuts or slivered almonds

• 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 egg*, beaten • 2 packages frozen puff pastry, thawed (or can use homemade or store-bought pizza dough) OPTIONAL: a pinch (less than 1/8 tsp) of each of the following spices: allspice, clove, ginger and cinnamon

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and stir in the ground beef and ground lamb, chopped onion, pine nuts, cinnamon, and salt and black pepper (plus the optional spices if desired). Cook and stir until the meat is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink. Drain and discard any excess grease.

2. Let the meat mixture cool.

3. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

4. Roll out the thawed pastry sheets to about 1/8-inch thickness.

Using a sharp 3-inch round cookie cutter, cut out at least 9 rounds per sheet. Lightly brush the inside edges with a little water, and place about 2 teaspoons of filling into the middle of each round.

Fold the pastry round in half to cover the filling and seal the edges well. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the remaining dough circles.

5. Brush each pie with a little egg wash. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes.

These grounds tend to release more caffeine, especially when steeped longer. Connoisseurs contend that this method of brewing produces a richer, fuller flavor. A serving that’s higher in caffeine may also have health advantages as well.

my Foodie Friends! Today is our son Johnny’s 28th birthday. Last year he moved to San Diego, CA from Boston (wanted the sunshine). While he was trying to minimize what he was going to have to pack to have transported out to the west coast, there was one item that he insisted he had to pack (and that we also sent him a back up on) – the French press. There are many ways to make coffee. However, he still insists this is the best way for him to make the cup of coffee he needs to start his day. He works from California, but his company is based in Boston so he is up early working on Eastern Standard Time. His cup of coffee is very important to him since he starts his day very early. People who use a press know and act like it is their own secret. You can see it in the smile they have when they talk about it as they are purchasing one for a friend. You can also see it in their frowns when they need one because the old one is lost due to a move or they are visiting here for an extended vacation and need one now! My customers have many different passions for their favorite products but French press people are knowledgeably loyal. French press coffee captures more of the flavor, aromas and oils from the coffee beans than drip coffee makers. You lose a lot in a drip maker to the paper filter. The difference between French press and drip coffee is that the grounds using a French press are steeped in boiling water while water just passes through the grounds in an auto or manual drip system.

Once you have your press, here are the simple directions: 1. Place the pot on a dry, flat surface. Hold the handle firmly, then pull out the plunger.

2. Add a heaping tablespoon (7-8 grams) of coffee to the pot per 200 ml (6.7 oz) of water.

3. Pour hot water – not quite boiling – into the pot and gently stir.

4. Carefully reinsert the plunger into the pot, stopping just above the water and ground coffee (do not plunge yet), and let stand for 3-4 minutes.

5. Press the plunger down slowly, exerting steady pressure.

• After each use, wash the pot with water and mild detergent, and dry thoroughly.

• Use coarse ground coffee.

(Remember, fine will come through your screen).

You should probably consume your coffee within about 20 minutes as it could become bitter. Some people prefer it that way so whatever your tastes are is fine. You can also vary the strength by adding more or less coffee. If you remember last week I talked about tea and they also make a tea press which is catching on with tea customers also.

Whereever your tastes take you, do what is best for you!

How to Make the Best Avocado Toast 1. Pick great avocados

You want ripe but not over-ripe Hass avocados. Look for avocados that yield a bit to a gentle squeeze, but avoid using avocados that are mushy or stringy on the inside. If you run into any bruised or brown bits when you cut them open, scoop those out and discard before mashing the rest.

2. Buy good bread and toast it well

I think sturdy, thick-sliced, whole grain bread make the best avocado toast. Golden, well-toasted bread offers a sturdy base and a crisp, shattering contrast against the creamy avocado.

3. Mash your avocado separately

Mashed avocado is more creamy and luxurious than sliced avocado (think guacamole vs. plain avocado).

But don’t mash it on the toast! You risk poking holes in your toast or smashing it. Cut your avocados in half, remove the pit, scoop the flesh into a bowl or onto the side of your plate, and mash it up with a fork.

Mashing a lot of avocados at once? Use a potato masher or pastry cutter instead of a measly little fork.

4. Don’t forget the salt

You’ll want to mix in at least a pinch of salt per avocado half.

• EVERYTHING BAGEL AVOCADO TOAST Add a generous sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning on top of your avocado toast.

• LOADED AVOCADO TOAST Mix chopped fresh radish, green onion, jalapeño (seeds and ribs removed) and toasted sunflower seeds.

Sprinkle generously on your toast.

• TOMATO-BASIL AVOCADO TOAST WITH BALSAMIC DRIZZLE If you have great tomatoes on hand, this is delicious. Top your avocado toast with sliced tomato, add a light drizzle of high-quality thick balsamic vinegar or designated balsamic glaze, and some torn fresh basil leaves

Call for Artists with Chronic Illnesses, Disabilities, & Caretakers Nonprofit seeks artists to feature work in show celebrating the healing power of art.

If you are someone living with a chronic illness, rare disease, disability, or are the caretaker of someone with one of the above, this is a great opportunity to express yourself and share your artwork. Saratoga Springs-based nonprofit, Beyond My Battle, is holding an art show this May showcasing the ways art can help manage the many stressors of living with, or caring for someone living with, any kind of medical condition. The deadline to submit artwork is March 30. All art must be able to be hung on a wall and artists must be ages 14 and older. Tree Toga 9 Tree Toga is a fun, family-friendly event at which Sustainable Saratoga’s great volunteers pull together to leave a green legacy for the next generation. Homeowners can request a free #NextGenTree by volunteering to be tree hosts

and committing to water and nurture their tree during its first two vulnerable years. At this 9th Tree Toga planting day, Sustainable Saratoga will plant thirty young trees throughout Saratoga Springs.

Volunteers will gather on April 27 at 9:30 a.m. at High Rock Park, Farmer’s Market Pavilion, across from 88 High Rock Ave., Saratoga Springs for registration, training, site assignments, and camaraderie.

Around 10 a.m., volunteers will disperse to plant shade trees in residential front yards and at institutional properties around the city. Mamma Mia is a romantic comedy, contrasting the dreams and aspirations of a 1970s girl and a 1990s girl.

Saratoga Shakespeare Company – Auditions For 2019 Season March 30 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Shakespeare Company of Saratoga Springs is holding auditions for both Equity and non-Equity actors, for their two summer productions: Shakespeare’s The Tempest, directed by Marcus Fuller and Shakespeare’s King Lear, directed

by Wesley Broulik. The company is celebrating its 19th summer season of free outdoor theater.

The group is seeking male and female performers of all ages, genders and ethnicities to perform all roles, and performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds and gender identification are

strongly encouraged to audition.

Actors must move well, be physically fit and have the ability and a facility to play multiple distinctive characters. Singing, dancing, stage combat, and/or the ability to play an instrument is a plus, but not a requirement.

Actors should prepare two Shakespearean monologues at least one of which should be comic (two minutes total) and should bring their headshots and résumés to the auditions.

Rehearsals begin Monday, July 1 for both productions.

Performances of The Tempest take place July 19-20. Performances for King Lear will take place July 23 – Aug. 3. Auditions take place 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 30 in the Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theatre on the Skidmore College campus. A Festival of Ideas: Skidmore College Hosts Symposium on Wonder March 29-30

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Skidmore College is offering area residents the opportunity to participate in a wondrous gathering of artists and scholars examining life’s biggest questions and ideas.

The Symposium on Humanistic Inquiry explores the theme of “wonder” — March 29-30 at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, located on the campus of Skidmore College. Twenty faculty members in various disciplines will give presentations and performances

around the theme. Tours of two recently opened exhibits at the Tang will also be offered.

Guest speaker Mary-Jane Rubenstein will kick off the symposium following a brief welcome and introduction at 2:30 p.m. March 29. Rubenstein is the author of “Strange Wonder: The Closure of Metaphysics and the Opening of Awe” and a professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Yamato: The Drummers of Japan, who fuse Taiko drumming with spectacle and athleticism will appear at Saratoga Performing Arts Center July 29.

The group of a dozen-plus players perform with a Japanese Taiko drum weighing half a ton, made from a single piece of wood from a tree that has aged more than 400 years.

Founded in 1993 in Japan’s Nara Prefecture and presently based in Asuka Village, Yamato travels all over the word with Japan’s traditional Taiko drums, putting its very souls into the unusual instruments, whose sound stirs the hearts of people everywhere. This past season marked Yamato’s 25th anniversary, celebrating over 3,500 performances in 54 countries.

At SPAC, the group will present a staging of their program, “Jhonetsu” at 8 p.m.

Preceding their appearance, a performance featuring 80 local children who have participated in The Performance Project: Youth in Motion, will be staged, at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the amphitheateronly Yamato performance are $30, $40 and $60 and are available at spac.org.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new lunchtime listening series kicks off Friday, March 29 at Caffe Lena.

The series will be staged noon to 1 p.m. the last Friday of the month, when Chuck “Rochmon” Vosganian spins records from the Captain Fun Listening Library.

The listening library is comprised of 1,516 vinyl albums and several hundred CDs from Alan “Captain

Fun” McKenney’s collection.

McKenney was born in 1944 and arrived in Saratoga in 1971.

He was a musical force in this city.

McKenney died in 2015, leaving behind his legendary collection of music and books.

The series will feature a playlist selected by a different local music lover every month.

“Champions for Change” Salutes Police Chief Veitch, Boys Track & Field Team on March 28 SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Thursday, March 28, Wellspring will host “Changemakers — Champions for Change,” — a celebration of the people and programs who help create a community free of relationship and sexual abuse.

The event will be held at Prime at Saratoga National beginning at 6:30 p.m. and features hearty hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, and a mission auction.

Wellspring’s community programs include education about healthy relationships and how to recognize and prevent relationship and sexual abuse. The night will also highlight the services Wellspring provides to more than

1,000 victims of domestic violence and sexual assault each year.

Wellspring will present its ‘Changemaker’ award in recognition of their commitment to change, and their work to create a community free of relationship and sexual abuse.

This year’s awards recipients are: The Shenendehowa Boys Track and Field Team — whose voice and action for social justice have reached national levels in their quest for #Meters4McCluskey, and Saratoga Springs Police Department Chief Gregory Veitch.

The effort was initiated by group founder Lisa Morahan after experiencing Easter Sunday 2009 too ill to make a basket for her son while in chemotherapy. Over the past nine years, thousands of Easter Baskets have been created and donated to several oncology centers across the Capital Region, so every child with a loved one in treatment has a beautiful basket to enjoy.

“Brighter Days Gala” March 28 - Robin Dalton to Accept S.O.S. Help, Hope & Humanity Award

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Shelters of Saratoga will stage its Brighter Days Gala on Thursday, March 28 at Longfellows Restaurant, 500 Union Ave. Shelters of Saratoga’s mission is to provide individuals with safe shelter, supportive services and sustainable strategies to end homelessness in the Greater Saratoga region.

Local resident Robin Dalton has been selected as the recipient of this year’s S.O.S. Help, Hope and Humanity award. Dalton

and her family have volunteered their time, as well as cooking and contributing supplies to the Shelters of Saratoga Code Blue emergency shelter program. The temporary shelter is sited at the Soul Saving Station Church, a few yards from where Dalton and her family make their home.

“I’ve embraced my new neighbors and have a greater understanding of the challenges they face each day” Dalton said, in a statement. “My eyes have been opened to the true need for

a permanent shelter in Saratoga.

It will give people a stable environment and opportunity in which they can move forward and out of homelessness.” Dalton recently joined the Code Blue Solutions Task Force whose primary objective is to find an accessible and permanent location for the winter shelter.

Tickets to the S.O.S. Brighter Days Gala are $100.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Catholic’s Junior athlete Grace O’Reilly takes the values instilled in her at home onto the playing fields.

“I grew up in a family of three kids…both my parents played sports in high school. It’s in the family,” said O’Reilly.

O’Reilly participates in cross-country, track and field, volleyball, basketball and softball.

Her father is also the Varsity coach for Spa Catholic’s softball team, of which both O’Reilly and her sister are players for.

Sometimes being the coach’s kid isn’t easy as the standards her father sets for her at home are also expected of her on the field.

“He (her father) knows me at home, so he knows the potential I have in the sports that I play, so he pushes me that much harder,” said O’ Reilly. “He does it with my sister, also. He knows our potential and he wants us to succeed.”

Faith, courage and strength are certainly at the forefront of the O’Reilly family’s minds, and it is evident in the way 17-year-old

O’Reilly believes her parents to be biggest inspiration in sports and in life.

“They’re (her parents) both constantly working and providing for us. They take time out of their day to make sure that we’re okay, to make sure that we’re happy.

Even if they’re not happy.”

O’Reilly’s favorite sport is volleyball, and it’s because she enjoys being an independent part of a team, where each player has their part to assist each other in reaching an overall success.

Much like on a sports team, a family operates the same way.

O’Reilly notices that balancing school work and sports can be challenging, but with her family's support, she is able to flourish.

“My family supports me a lot so they can tell when I’m feeling down and they’ll say ‘hey, you need a mental day, or you need to not go to practice.”

For O’Reilly, family and fitness are one in the same. She hopes to continue to be a part of teams through college.

Many have encountered Coach Johns or his organization through his years of actively going to local schools to incorporate his eight points of respect into Saratoga classrooms, but he does sometimes venture beyond the county of Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Stars concluded their season with an ice show Friday, March 16. This program is sponsored by the Saratoga Springs Lions Club, and provides an opportunity for visually, and physically impaired youths and young adults to learn new skills on the ice.

COMMUNITY SPORTS BULLETIN The Saratoga County Chamber’s April Fool’s Day Run/Walk on Monday, April 1 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Participants will start, finish and celebrate at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in the Saratoga Spa State Park.

The race is not timed, but in honor of April Fool’s Day, everyone will start together at 5:30 p.m. But you can post and promote whatever time and distance you want to say you walked or ran to “fool” your friends.

There will be measured and marked routes within the park ranging from one mile to a 5K. This event will take place regardless of the weather.

Registration is $25 per person. All proceeds will benefit the Saratoga County Foundation, Inc., which works to support the Veterans Business Council, the Healthy Saratoga movement, Leap of Kindness Day 2020 and more.

Participants will get a t-shirt and will be able to get to enjoy food and drinks at the celebration. There will be a stage where you can pose with a trophy or medal as the “winner.” Take photos showcasing your personal best time and first-place finish that you can share with your friends.

SPORTS Nine-Year-Old Spa City Ninja to Appear on America Ninja Warrior

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Nine-year-old Spa City local Ollie Huss will show the world his ninja skills on American Ninja Warrior Junior.

Ollie has been climbing and ninja-ing with his siblings for years, as it is very much a part of his family’s way of life. His father Eric Huss, who has a vested interest in climbing and athletics, turned his garage into their own personal climbing and ninja gym, which is now known to many as Saratoga Ninja Garage.

However, he only began seriously competing in rock

climbing and ninja competitions three years ago.

"He's kind of self-taught with everything; his ninja, his climbing, skiing, everything - he's a natural,” says Eric Huss, Ollie’s dad.

Eric Huss and Ollie’s mother strongly encourage their kids to try a lot of different activities and help them to maintain balance in every aspect of their lives. This constant support and encouragement are why at such a young age, Ollie is fearless, and holds a lot of discipline to practice and confidence.

"So, when you're doing something - let’s say, American Ninja Warrior Junior, you do the first obstacle, and you kinda feel

confident for the rest of what you're doing,” says Ollie.

Ollie often takes his practice outside of the gym. He has climbed jungle gyms, door jams and the attempted to scale various structures around town.

This nine-year-old with the hot pink hair is fearless to say the least. His father can’t recall feeling nervous watching his children scaling obstacles feet above the ground, but his biggest take away is watching the progression of his young athletes.

"It's fun watching the kids progress from when he and his brother did their first comps (competitions) three or four years ago and fell in the first obstacle and

ran off the course crying,” said Huss.

“And now to see what they do… it’s just to watch that progression it's been pretty cool as well."
