Tango Fusion Dance COVID-19 and Freelance Artists Company Offers Free Resources & Opportunities Online Dance Classes by Thomas Dimopoulos in Swing, Salsa & More Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Tango Fusion Dance Company who has been offering adult and kids partner dance classes since 2012, is offering their classes online via Facebook Live.

Company co-director Diane Lachtrupp Martinez states - "At this time, we cannot offer our regular group classes, but people still need to move and dance, so live online was the solution." Her husband dance/partner offered, "We weren't sure how it would go but we offered our classes this past Monday and Tuesday's online with Facebook and had a great response from our local students as well as former students in NYC. " Johnny and Diane will be offering classes next Monday the 23 and Tuesday the 24 starting at 6:30. Monday's night's classes will include beginner Waltz, intermediate Swing, beginner Cha Cha and Advanced Hustle.

Tuesday's classes will include beginner Salsa, intermediate Salsa and Intermediate West Coast Swing. Each week's class reviews from the week before and then we add on. The free classes will also be offered on Monday, March 30 and Tuesday, March 31.

No partner or experience necessary. The classes are designed for people with an at home dance partner or to dance by yourself.

We welcome people to type in questions or comments while the class is going on. "This is new to us, " comments Diane, " and we welcome your suggestions to make it a fun learning experience."

How to log-on go to our Facebook page "Tango Fusion" and you can either watch videos from last Monday and Tuesday and/or join our live classes on Monday and Tuesday. Although the classes are free for the next two weeks, they do eventually plan to have people register online to take their dancing further. However, Tango Fusion will continue indefinitely to offer one free class a week to introduce people to the wonderful world of dance.

Children's classes - We have had requests to offer some kid's classes as well so they are offering a kid/family class free for the next two Wednesdays - March 25 and April 1 at 11:15 a.m. Families and kids may log onto the Tango Fusion Facebook page and join us for a warm -up, dance moves and a routine.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — An aggregated list of free resources, opportunities, and financial relief options available to artists of all disciplines has been developed by and for freelance artists and those interested in supporting the independent artist community.

The resources – highlighted by Upstate Alliance for the Creative Economy, or ACE, is specifically designed to serve freelance artists, and those interested in supporting the independent artist community. Included are information for actors, designers,

producers, technicians, stage managers, musicians, composers, choreographers, visual artists, filmmakers, craft artists, teaching artists, dancers, writers and playwrights, photographers, and others.

The links include artists’ readiness alert and the challenges of business interruptions, lists of emergency funding opportunities for artists, national crowdfunding and collective action efforts related to new funds set up specifically to relieve artists in financial crisis as a result of COVID-19, online arts sharing platforms as well as best practices for online teaching, learning, and gathering.

ACE is a regional group of stakeholders representing Capital Region arts organizations, private corporations, philanthropists, economic development, chambers of commerce, nonprofit organizations, financial organizations, media, and educational institutions.

The stakeholders recognize creative enterprises are of vital economic importance in terms of employment, community empowerment, economic competitiveness, enhanced quality of life, and skill building – all leading to the community’s increased well-being.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — As efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19 force music venues across the nation to go dark, Saratoga's Caffè Lena is maintaining a nightly concert schedule.

There will be no audience in the popular venue's 110 seats, but bands will take the stage to keep delivering music "at a time when it's needed most," Caffè Lena's Board President Jim Mastrianni said, in a statement.

Using three broadcast cameras mounted in the

performance space, the venue will use professional operators to livestream concerts on its YouTube channel.

"We're really concerned about the loss of income for independent musicians who are unable to work now, and we also know that music helps everyone feel better at times like this," Mastrianni said. "Based on people's remarks, we know it's a big pick-me-up to be part of an audience when people are feeling isolated and worried,"

said Mastrianni.

"Music is our mission," said the café’s Executive Director Sarah Craig. "We can't be together in person for a few weeks, so we're going to engage people right in their living rooms. It seems like lots of folks are eager to help our musical family stay strong during this challenging time."

The goal is offering a broadcast every night at 8 p.m. for the duration of the shut-down.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — ­ What began a career in fashion turned into something above and beyond what Virginia Fretto, owner of Razimus Jewelry, ever thought she would do.

Fretto designs and creates custom pieces of jewelry made from keepsake fabrics.

Memorable garments such as wedding gowns, baby quilts and a grandfather’s tie can now be worn and remembered forever.

“So talk about fulfilling, I get to be creative and help people,” Fretto said. “The best part is this feeling and sense that I’m doing something bigger than just design.”

However, Fretto never imagined herself designing with such keepsake items and said it was something that happened naturally.

“It was just something that happened organically. I started having clients ask me if I could make them something out of an important garment and the more I said yes to it, the more fulfilling that felt,” Fretto said.

Fretto started Razimus Jewelry after she and her husband moved to New York for a job opportunity.

In Boston, Fretto said she handled the corporate social responsibility

at Hearts on Fire, a diamond dealership. After experiencing the corporate side of business, Fretto searched for a creative outlet and thus her business was born.

Fretto began her store with design collections of eco-friendly fabric jewelry, which she sold through a number of boutiques in the capital region. She said her store combines two passions: fashion and jewelry design.

Starting three years ago, Fretto noticed requests for custom keepsake jewelry more often. After placing a small listing on her website about such items, Fretto started to shift the business focus in Feb. 2019.

“This is a big transition for my business,” Fretto said. “The beginning of last year it started to become more of a request and something I started to realize was a service and a gift that I can provide to my clients.”

The store now holds the focus of custom designing. Fretto said they work with clients to transform fabric pieces such as a great grandmother’s apron and design it into jewelry that can either be a special gift for someone, or can even serve as memorial gifts.

“It’s really such a beautiful way to honor a loved one or preserve a memory, and there aren’t many options out there to

preserve loved ones clothing after loss or to transform your wedding dress after the big day is over. I have found a really unique niche, and it is touching so many lives.

I am just so thrilled that I can use my creative skills to touch so many families & people through fabric jewelry design,” Fretto said.

Fretto uses a variety of different materials to create these custom pieces. They use everything from sterling silver to precious stones and a majority of their pieces are made with solid copper, brass, stainless steel or pewter. Fretto wanted to offer enough materials in case a client had an allergy to one of the metals.

Once a request in sent in via mail or online, Fretto and her team get to work. She has two women who work at home as contract employees. They do the sewing and beading of the designs as they come in.

“We really like that [work] dynamic. It’s conducive to moms who stay at home or people that have multiple jobs or different issues of flexibility in their schedules,” Fretto said. “It’s something that we

can continue to grow and add more artisans in the area and it’s really lovely because I get to kind of work and feed off of all these other very creative women.”

Working with memorable garments creates a sense of honor in Fretto and said every story she hears holds a place in her heart. She even had the privilege of watching people open the box with their new bracelet or necklace and the tears that are shed don’t come from sadness.

“There’s a certain comfort and happiness that I know I’m providing and it’s a beautiful thing.

I feel like I’m actually offering a service that was not planned but has become a really beautiful part of this journey,” Fretto said.

Operating largely through her website, Fretto said she also occupies a small portion of the Palette Cafe on Broadway. Requests for the custom pieces can be made online, in store, or through the mail.

“I’m able to use the talents that I’ve had and kind of keep developing them and keep innovating,” Fretto said. “And not just in a way that’s serving me as a creative outlet, but

that I know is actually providing something so meaningful as the end product to the client.”

COPING WITH COVID-19 Paying it forward is a great way to help businesses around the community after being shut down during this outbreak. In response to this outbreak, and as a small business owner herself, Fretto created an idea to help pay it forward.

Fretto dedicated a portion to her website to help other small businesses. A portion of sales from any purchase on their website will be used to make another purchase from a small business in the local community. She wants to encourage other small businesses, in any way they are able, to use a portion of that sale to continue the cycle and make a purchase from another small business.

For example, once a bracelet is sold, Fretto will use those funds to purchase a delivery meal, local farm produce, toiletry, clothing, cleaning or other handmade products produced by a small business owners. She will then donate said product to Wellspring, a non-profit organization whose mission is to help survivors of relationship abuse and sexual assault.

The idea is to help generate some needed revenue and support in the community. While upholding social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19, anything ordered will be mailed directly. Bracelets can range in price from $40 to $90.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Richard E. Dunn, 71, died Friday, Mar. 13, 2020 at his residence.

Born in New Hartford, NY, he was a son of the late George and Henrietta (Koehring) Dunn. He graduated Cornell University with a degree in marketing. He was commissioned in the US Army and would excel at some of the Army’s most difficult assignments, including Ranger School.

Soon after, he married his high school sweetheart, Anita Downs.

They moved to West Germany, making lifelong friends and travelling extensively and Rick was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1974.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Roger Louis Gaynor Jr. of Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away on March 1, 2020. He was born on April 23, 1943 in O’ahu, Hawaii.

Roger served in the United States Air Force from 1962-1965.

He worked in the Iron Workers Industry and was a member of the Local 12 Iron Workers’ Union in Albany, NY and the Texas Iron Workers’ Union. He is survived by his son, Todd C. Gaynor.

Returning stateside to Colorado, he earned his MBA and CPA while working in public accounting, ultimately returning to the Capital Region in 1979.

The family settled in Saratoga, a community Rick would love and serve for decades. After working at Skidmore College, Rick had a 25 year career in marketing and business with Stewart’s Corp. Beyond his devotion to the Stewart’s family, he was a committed and caring volunteer in the broader Saratoga community, serving with the YMCA, Wesley Health Care Center, Saratoga Springs Zoning Board, Saratoga County IDA, Luther Forest Technology Campus, Catholic Charities, and the Church of St. Peter.

He also devoted many years coaching softball and supporting programs such as 4-H. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Anita; his son Brian (Jen) and daughter Colleen (Christina), four beautiful grandchildren: Wesleigh, Frances, Ella and Ricky (his namesake); two sisters, Patricia (Joseph) Peck and Kathleen Olson and his brother, James Dunn (Claire). He was further blessed by the presence

of much-loved nieces, nephews, and relatives on both sides of his extended family. He also cherished strong circles of long-time friends, whom he thought of as family. He is predeceased by his parents and a brother. Thomas Perry Dunn.

Due to health concerns of the COVID-19, a Mass of Christian Burial will be in the Church of St. Peter at a future date/time to be announced. Per Rick’s wishes, there will no calling hours.

City Police Make Adjustments to Protocol

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Police Departments has enacted new measures and adjustments to protocol to ensure the safety of personnel and the public.

Police will continue to respond to all emergency calls for service.

Certain measures will be enacted to prevent unnecessary contact with

COURT Jake B. Sweeney, 32, of Clermont, New Hampshire, pleaded March 12 to criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, in Malta. Sentencing May 13.

Kelly A. Leonardi, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded March 11 to one felony count of vehicular manslaughter in the second-degree, and two misdemeanor counts of assault, in connection with an incident that occurred on State Route 9 in Malta on July 14, 2019. The incident involved a head-on collision during which Leonardi was driving.

Leonardi’s fiancé John Stevens was a passenger in the vehicle and was killed. Injuries were suffered by Michael DeFile and Mario Gonzalez.

According to Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen, Leonardi had morphine, fentanyl and alprazolam in her blood stream at the time of the crash.

Sentencing is June 3.

Jarred M. Elston, 26, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced March 11 to 10 years in jail, to be followed by 3 years of post-release supervision after pleading to two counts of felony assault.

The incident involved Elston striking and causing injury to his fiancé and his brother.

Andrew M. Acabbo, 79, of Saratoga, was sentenced to five years of probation, after pleading to felony DWI, in Saratoga Springs.

POLICE Marshall Vanburen, 26, of Halfmoon, was charged March 7 in Saratoga Springs with

those who may be ill, which will affect certain nonemergency calls for service, according to a statement issued by the department.

Christine Lieberman, 62, of Saratoga Springs, was charged March 10 with felony grand larceny.

Craig Canty, 56, of Saratoga Springs, was charged March 11 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Dana Goossens, 29, of Schenectady, was charged March 11 in Saratoga Springs with two misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Robin Mattison, 41, of Milton, was charged March 12 in Saratoga Springs with felony grand larceny.

Our Local Businesses Need Your Support Now I regularly have the opportunity to walk downtown with my dog. These last several days I have noticed that there are fewer people walking with me, and as I looked into the restaurant windows saw that virtually nobody was there. I began paying attention and realized that in our efforts to socially distance ourselves we are hurting our downtown. The Skidmore students are home for an extended period, conferences in the City Center have been cancelled, and we are staying away from each other and town.

One of the greatest things about being a Saratoga resident is the access to the unique stores and restaurants downtown. They are small businesses being crushed by forces outside of their control but I think we have the opportunity to help them out. We can order a meal or two from our favorite restaurants for pick up, or even purchase a gift card for future use. Spring seems to be bearing down on us and perhaps you could use some new clothes so think about buying a gift card from one of the boutiques in town if you don’t feel comfortable shopping in person. If we are careful we can continue to shop in town, I know that the salespeople would love to have someone to talk to and you might enjoy the fact that they have the time to really help you.

Downtown is one of the things that makes this place so special and the business owners do so much to make Saratoga a welcoming place for everyone. We can show them that we appreciate all that they do by spending a bit of money right now when they need it most. Who knows when this will pass, and if we don’t step up now recovering from this may not be possible. I know that sounds dire but for small businesses it is.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Wellspring is expanding its efforts to support survivors of relationship and sexual abuse by offering an internet based chat hotline, effective Monday, March 16, 2020.

This service was going to be launched in April in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) but, in light of the current health crisis related

to COVID-19, they felt that it was vital to launch this service now as people reduce the amount of person to person contact that they are having.

As with all their services, including our 24-hour telephone hotline (518-584-8188), a chat service is available to people who are currently experiencing harm related to domestic violence and/

or sexual assault AND for the friends, family members, and loved ones of people who are victims of domestic violence and/ or sexual assault.

It is an opportunity for people to get information about their rights and options related to domestic violence or sexual assault. We know that domestic violence and sexual assault are

complex issues and we are here to help people process their experience so they can determine what is right for them.

The web-based chat hotline is intended to be an anonymous service. Users will not be asked to provide any of their personally identifiable information at any time during the chat session unless necessary for ongoing assistance.

Scholastic Offers Free Courses NATION WIDE — While schools closed down for up to a month and switch to online classrooms, Scholastic announced free courses for families, administrators and teachers.

According to their website, Scholastic Learn at Home provides three hours of learning opportunities per day for up to four weeks of instruction. The grade levels are divided up into four sections; PreKindergarten to kindergarten, grades 1 to 2, grades 3 to 5, and grades 6 to 9. Subjects cover ELA,

STEM, science, social studies and social-emotional learning.

“As more and more teachers, students, and families around the world are affected by the coronavirus, our priority is to support them in the best way we know how—by providing them with rich stories and meaningful projects that will keep kids academically active,” says Lauren Tarshis, Senior Vice President & Editor-in-Chief/Publisher, Scholastic Classroom Magazines.

“We designed Scholastic

Learn At Home knowing that administrators and teachers need to create extensive virtual learning plans, quickly, and that students need uplifting and engaging experiences. Our hope is that even though daily routines are being disrupted and students may not have valuable time in school with their educators, together we can support meaningful learning at home while it is necessary.”

Scholastic Learn at Home is accessible on all devices and no sign-up is required. Instruction

for each lesson includes writing and research projects based on nonfiction articles and stories, virtual field trips and reading and geography challenges. The courses are flexible for using any writing materials students have available at home and no printing is required.

Local Schools Offer Free Meals to Students SARATOGA COUNTY — As schools close through the end of March, districts in the area are providing free meals to students.

Ballston Spa Central School District is offering free and reduced breakfast and lunches available to students who are enrolled in the reduced meal program. Meals can be picked up each weekday starting this week between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Here are the locations for pick up: • High School/Middle School Students - HS main entrance • Malta Students - Malta Ave. Elementary School main entrance • GC/MT/WR Students -

Milton Terrace Elementary School Cafeteria Side Entrance • Town of Milton Community Center • Town of Malta Community Center • Town of Ballston - Town Hall Saratoga Springs School District will offer breakfast and lunch, free of charge, for any student under the age of 18.

Starting this week meals can be picked up between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Families who plan to take advantage of meals are asked to fill out a Meal Distribution Survey to help with planning. Meals will be provided in a grab and go style.

Schuylerville Central School District started March 18 with delivery only meals to any students under the age of 18, regardless of their free or reduced lunch eligibility. BIRDS OF PREY GREENFIELD — Prestwick Chase on March 15 hosted a lecture on Birds of Prey, where different species were brought in for the residents to learn about and be able to see them up close.

There were different types of raptors discussed. Their habitats, hunting styles, incredible optical vision and flight ability were just a few things discussed at length.

Presented were Great Horned Owl, Mini Screech Owl, Red Tail Hawk and Peregrine Falcon.

The beauty of this activity for the residents was to be able to see these magnificent creatures up close, literally only a foot away as the handlers passed by the residents seated. Often in the wild we see them on power poles, trees and rock areas.

This presentation lets you look them right in the eye, see their beautiful colors and hear the sounds they make that you just cant appreciate from a far off sighting.

With all of the Coronavirus talk 24/7, residents were able to simply enjoy this presentation

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City Council announced on Friday, March 13 that the City of Saratoga Springs has declared a State of Emergency. City Hall offices were closed to the public beginning Monday, March 16 and remain so until rescinded by a further order.

The City Police Department, Fire/EMS Department, and vital Public Works staff will continue to operate as normal. For lifethreatening emergencies, call 911.

Call your health care provider FIRST if you have any concerns over your health and possible exposure to COVID-19.

Public attendance will not be allowed at City Council meetings, which will instead be live streamed

Up at Senior Center

SARATOGA SPRINGS — In an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, Shelters of Saratoga will be using a new location as an emergency shelter for the homeless currently housed at the Code Blue Shelter on Adelphi Street. The Senior Center at 5 William St. is being converted for this purpose.

“People experiencing homelessness not only are challenged to do what we are asking like, washing hands, staying indoors, talking to their medical providers when they are not feeling well - but many are already impacted with health issues, thus putting them at-high risk of contracting the virus,” said Karen Gregory, executive director of Shelters of Saratoga, which oversees the Code Blue program.

Individuals experiencing homelessness include many older adults, often with compounding disabilities. In Saratoga Springs, these adults often reside in small, congregate shelters or in unsheltered locations with poor access to sanitation. Their age, poor health, disability, and living conditions make them highly vulnerable to illness.

Once COVID-19 is introduced to this high-risk population, further transmission will be very difficult to contain, hence inspiring Shelters of Saratoga to initiate a rapid response plan during the crisis.

SOS’s Case Managed Emergency Shelters house up to 32 individuals a night in a congregate-style setting. They also sponsor the Emergency Winter Shelter - Code Blue which

houses up to 61 individuals each night between Oct. 15 and April 15. Quarantining someone inside the building is not an option.

“Across all of our programs, we will be working unconventional hours to secure coverage. Until this passes, we will not be doing business as usual - the safety of the team and all of the guests are of utmost importance to me.

This is a difficult time and we do not have the luxury of working remotely. We are here, present and in the trenches - side by side the individuals we are serving,” Gregory said.

Shelter staff are monitoring guests for symptoms and encouraging people to self-report if they’re not feeling well. But in the event of an outbreak, Gregory said she would need support from the Department of Health, the Local Department of Social Services and area hospitals to treat and house the sick, as well as to make sure that they are connected with food and other services they depend on the shelter for.

“In this new location, we will have three rooms which will easily allow for separation. I am proud and grateful to work in a city that cares so deeply for its most vulnerable.”

S.O.S. also operates an outreach program for the many individuals living in motels scattered throughout the county, parking garages and those who do not come indoors. The SOS outreach team is working to get critical information about the virus to people, who are in many cases unaware of the dangers posed by this virus.

SARATOGA HOSPITAL - COVID-19: New Visitation & Hospital Access Policies; Hospital Establishes Separate Lab Specimen Collection Site for Approved COVID-19 Testing of Patients

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital has instituted new visitation and hospital access policies. Until further notice, enter only through the main entrance or the Alfred Z. Solomon Emergency Center.

The main entrance hours are: Monday - Friday: 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Saturday: 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Sunday: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

• The Emergency Center entrance is open 24/7.

• Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology entrance: for cancer patients only.

• No visitors with fever, cough or shortness of breath • All patients will be restricted to one visitor/support person. This applies to all patients, including inpatients, those who are coming to the hospital for outpatient tests or treatments, and maternity patients.

The hospital says “compassionate considerations” will be made on a case-by-case basis dependent on a patient's circumstances and nurse director or designee approval. All patients and visitors must sign in at the reception desk and follow the login procedure. No visitors under age 16.

Turning Water into Beer

SARATOGA SPRINGS — In honor of World Water Day, Artisanal Brew Works will release a limited-edition beer on March 22.

World Water Day highlights the importance of freshwater, showing the connection between water and climate change. The goal is to bring awareness of how to use water more efficiently and adapting to those habits.

Artisanal Brew Works partnered with Saratoga PLAN, Preserving Land and Nature, to create a one of a kind beer that’s only available for a limited time. Owner of Artisanal Kurt Borchardt said he’s excited about the fundraiser.

“We like to do that kind of stuff,” Borchardt said.

The beer, named the World Water Day IPA will be offered until the single batch runs out. He said a portion of proceeds would go to support Saratoga PLAN. “Our intention with this collaboration is to bring awareness to the community by connecting the dots between water conservation and all of the systems that rely on it, not just nature,” said Alex Fylypovych, PLAN’s Community Engagement Manager in a press release.

As a brewery that focuses on achieving unique flavors in beer, Borchardt stepped up to create the IPA. He added that in early summer, another beer would be released to donate to the Saratoga Auto Museum.

The brewery opened in July 2016 as a New York State Farm Brewery, meaning 90 percent of raw materials came from NYS farmers. However Borchardt said grain was becoming expensive, they were limited on hop choices

and they didn’t want to pass cost to the customers.

“They love the idea of local but then they look at the price and ask why it’s so expensive,” Borchardt said. “It was really hard to compete like that and we wanted to make certain styles of beer, so directionally we changed our focus from being exclusively a farm brewery to a dual license.”

The brewery is still certified as a NYS Farm Brewery, so each year the brewery has to use a certain amount of farm materials.

In addition, the brewery also has a microbrew license, which is what more breweries have.

“Once we did that we started ramping up our creativity because we weren’t constrained by ingredients anymore,” Borchardt

said. “That [license] allows me to use ingredients form all over the world.”

The brewery now aims to target unique flavors in the beers they create, like a chocolate caramel truffle stout, and figure out what ingredients they can use to achieve that. He said they perpetually try different hops, water chemistry and different grains to achieve a specific flavor.

“I like the fact that were not static and were flexible in a lot of different ways. Clearly the different beer styles we make are reflective of that,” Borchardt said.

He added that over the winter, he focused on creating sour beers.

He said most sours give an off flavor that he didn’t enjoy, so he focused on eliminating that over the winter until he figured it out.

Dollar General & Market 32 Announces Senior Shopping Hour Starting this week, Dollar General is encouraging the first hour of operation each day to be dedicated for the shopping needs of senior customers. Market 32 starting March 19 will pre-open exclusively to seniors from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Dollar General wants to provide these at-risk customers with the ability to purchase the items they need and want at the beginning of each day to avoid busier and more crowded shopping periods, according to their release. Market 32

President Scott Grimmett reflected similar ideas and announced the stores will close at 10 p.m. and re-open at 7 a.m. to help restock products and preventative sanitation.

Dollar General will also close an hour earlier to allow employees to clean and restock shelves.

Finishing Touches Announces New Location MALTA — Finishing Touches Home Decor announced shutting their doors on their current store to open a new location on Route 9 in Malta.

After being open for five years, owner of Finishing Touches, Shelly Walker, said they felt tucked away in their old location and wanted to move to an easier accessed location.

“It’s very exciting and we’re doing renovations right now,” Walker said.

Walker said they plan to open doors early spring with a new look to the store. She said the new store would host a more modern and vintage looks compared to what they have now. Currently they have a selection of modern furniture and items upstairs, while they offer an Adirondack and rustic look downstairs.

“We’re going to have a large focus on products that are made in the USA,” Walker said. “Handmade and locally made items.”

“There is a little section of the store we want to have it,” Walker said. “He has always wanted to do this and it’s another reason to bring people there.”

Resilience is NOT about going it alone. Instead, resilience is about collaboration.

Here’s what I’ve learned from a little bit of research.

Everyone can be resilient.

EVERYONE can be resilient.

Now most people equate resilience with an individual who perseveres and overcomes a significant threat or tragedy on their own.

Resilience is defined by the American Psychological Association as: “The process of adapting well in the face of

They can often tell you a story that describes the moment or moments when their resilience was tested and how they adapted.

They have a “narrative of hope.”

Downtown Saratoga Springs was at its lowest points they say in the 1960’s. Thankfully, some resilient people banded together and created a Plan of Action and it’s made all the difference.

We’ve survived ice storms, blizzards and hurricanes. We’ve survived recessions and bruising political battles often times pitting neighbor versus neighbor.

When New York City and our nation was attacked on 9/11, it was this community that rose up to host first responders for

a weekend respite with their families. We did this again ten years later to show our support for those in our armed services who had fought the War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was this community that invented Leap of Kindness Day! This latest threat is real. There likely will be days for many among us where the trauma and tragedy is real, personal and hard to comprehend.

But we can all be resilient. We can climb any mountain. We can climb out of any hole too.

We’ll do this together. We’ll do this through collaboration.

We will try our best to remain optimistic. To be hopeful and to have faith in one another and our collective ability to adapt and to overcome this challenge.

The actions we take in these next few weeks as resilient people working together will help us to write the next chapter of our Narrative of Hope.

FORWARD LUNGE Step forward with one foot, lower hips until both knees are bent approx. 90 degrees. Keep weight in the front heel and knee above the ankle (not pushed out past your toes). Push through the heel to return to starting position.

REVERSE LUNGE Step back with one foot. Flex hips and knees to lower the body until both knees are bent approximately 90 degrees. Pressure should be on the ball of the back foot, and front knee should stay in line with the front foot. Press off the back foot to return to start.

PUSHUPS With hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart, feet hip width apart, and looking slightly ahead, push with hands into the floor to raise the entire body until arms are straight, then back down as low as possible with good form.

Raise back up and repeat. No sagging butts or butts in the air!

You should have a straight line from the shoulders to the heels.

DIPS With feet on chair/bench and palms on the edge of another chair/ bench, lower yourself as far as comfortably possible (90 degrees is the goal) and then raise back up until arms are straight. Repeat.

PLANKS Facing down on the floor with weight supported on toes and forearms, hold the position for 30 seconds to one minute.

Arms are bent and directly below the shoulders. Keep your abs tight and no sagging butts or butts in the air. You should have a straight line from shoulders to heels.

SUPERMANS Laying face down with arms straight ahead, simultaneously raise arms, legs and chest off the floor. Hold for 2 seconds and release, squeezing the back on the hold. Repeat.

LEG RAISES Lying on your back with legs straight and together, lift the legs up until your bottom comes off the floor. Lower the legs back down about 3 inches from the ground and raise again.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS Begin in the pushups position.

Bring one knee up towards the chest, flexing both hip and knee.

Quickly switch legs bringing the opposite knee towards the chest.

Alternate. This should be an explosive movement done quickly.

WEEK ONE OF THE EDUCATION SHUTDOWN IS IN THE BOOKS. Hopefully everything went as well as can be expected and your nerves aren’t too frazzled.

Overseeing your child for a month (minimum) while they do work sent home by the teacher is not the same thing as families who choose to home-school full-time. Full-time Homeschooling parents have the opportunity to spend many months planning their curriculum and preparing for the year. What you are being asked to do is much different, and comes with it’s own unique set of challenges.

While every family has different goals, motivation, structure, and expected outcomes, we spoke to a local homeschool group and asked them from tips and guidelines to help you navigate your way through these uncharted waters.

Saratoga TODAY will provide you with additional tips and/or ideas in the upcoming weeks.

Good luck in this adventure. Just remember, take a deep breath, stay calm and make it fun.

GENERAL ADVICE: Academics, while important, should be secondary. Take this time to really get to know each other and genuinely enjoy each other.

Limit the time spent on phones, computers…view this as bonus time to bond as a family.

Don't put unwarranted stress upon yourself to live up to teaching standards that you think you need to live up to. Don't stress and get upset if your children are having a difficult time learning material. Changes in routine can affect the learning process. Impatience can lead to frustration for everyone and could lead to hurt relationships.

The internet has so many programs that it's easy to get overwhelmed. Sticking to books can be more liberating and easier to control, especially with kids who may end up just playing games on the computer!

Write down a schedule or routine and share it with the family. Keep it general and make sure getting outside every day is part of the agenda!

SCHOOLING: Have a family meeting each day to go over plan for the day. Kids know their school schedule, but this is a new routine. Everyone will work better if they know the schedule and expectations.

Make sure each child has a designated place to work within your view, and give each child their own checklist of schoolwork they should get done each day. Be available to help your kids, but let them do what they can on their own.

Get required schoolwork done early in the day, then use the rest of the day to bake together, plan a garden, declutter/spring clean, makeover a room in the house... Enjoy each other's company!

Admit that you are learning together. Take the lead, but be flexible and responsive to whatever the family needs most.

SET SMALL DAILY GOALS. Make it interesting and take school outside -practice math facts while throwing a baseball, writing math facts or spelling words on hopscotch squares…go for a run and discuss the book they're reading.

Read outside while lounging in the sun- the Vitamin D is good for you!

Look around your house with "home-school eyes." Which books, games, and toys are educational? Do they cover a certain subject? You may have more resources than you realize right under your nose. Gather them up and use them- Learning should be fun!

GATHER AROUND THE TV Netflix and Amazon Prime have some wonderful educational and historical programming. Spend this time watching things you otherwise would not watch. Following are some great programs to get started with: • THE MEN WHO BUILT AMERICA Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford are names synonymous with innovation and big business in America. They all built empires and created advances in technology. They helped shape the country in its early days by doing things such as developing the models for modern railroads, creating the modern financial system and making cars accessible to the masses.

• WASHINGTON Washington tells the story of how a fatherless young soldier full of personal ambition becomes a leader of men willing to sacrifice all for the common cause. How a once-loyal British subject rises to battle an empire in a liberty-or-death campaign to forge a new nation. And then how, at the zenith of his power, the victorious general voluntarily steps down, becoming what King George III would call “the greatest man in the world.”

• INVENTIONS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD Go on a decade-by-decade voyage of discovery through life-changing inventions, like the radio that made the world smaller, the machine gun that made it more dangerous, or the parking meter that made it more expensive. Witness the discovery and creation of billiondollar inventions and financial disasters - all players in the most innovative century the world has ever known.

NEAT IDEAS: Have your kids keep daily journals to practice their writing skills. Kids can write about what is going on, how they feel, observations they make about society during this time, and what they do as an individual and as a family during this time.

These will become primary documents for the future and could even be used in a book later.

Let the kids sleep later than normal- you'll be surprised at the growth spurts you'll see when they aren't getting up at the crack of dawn for an early bus!

But don't get in the habit of letting them stay up later than normal, that often leads to crankiness in everyone the next day.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Relax! If some days go down the tubes, let it go and start over tomorrow.

Camp Crafters: Campers learn useful and fun outdoor skills like how to build different types of fires and shelters, cook over the fire, lash a table, and so much more!

Adventure Challenge: Adventure Challenge campers work as a team on a progression of ropes course elements to help develop confidence, build self-esteem, problem-solve with a team, and assist in understanding group dynamics while working toward a common goal.

Wanderers: Wanderers go on a 3-day, 2-night backpacking trip in the Adirondack mountains. Campers work as a group to choose a route into the mountains and plan, pack, and carry everything needed for the adventure.

This year, summer camp runs from June 28 to July 31, 2020. Our first session is for boys 9-15 only, with 2 possible programs they can register for; Mash-Up and Wild About Outdoors.

Waterbugs: Waterbugs spend lots of time swimming, boating, and creek walking, in addition to participating in other traditional camp activities.

Mash-Up: The perfect session for boys who want to experience traditional Camp Little Notch activities like swimming, boating, camp crafting, hiking, studying ecology, archery, and making s’mores around the campfire.

Wild About Outdoors: WAO is all about learning and practicing outdoor survival skills. Learn how to set up a tent, start a fire with one match, and catch a fish.

Outdoor Survival: Outdoor Survival campers work together to master fire building and outdoor cooking, and learning to build a shelter; they then put their skills to good use on an overnight challenge.

Sessions Two to Seven are for girls.

Girls 7-17 can sign up for the following programs; Dabblers, Adventure Challenge, Camp Crafters, Wanderers, Ropes Extravaganza, Waterbugs, Eco Artists, Outdoor Survival, Kayak, Paddle & Sail. Different programs are offered for different weeks.

Dabblers: Dabblers is perfect for girls who want to experience traditional Camp Little Notch activities like swimming, boating, camp crafting, hiking, studying ecology, and making s’mores around the campfire.

Ropes Extravaganza: Continue building teamwork and problemsolving skills on exciting high ropes elements. Includes a trip to a neighboring ropes course. Prerequisite: Adventure Challenge.

Eco Artists: Learn about Adirondack plants and wildlife while exploring the trails, creeks, and terrain of CLN. Get hands-on experience in STEM topics such as the water cycle, climate change, and forest management.

Kayak, Paddle & Sail: Practice your skills and learn some new ones in our kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, and canoes. After campers have mastered their skills, we will take a kayak trip offsite!

fforts to slow the Coronavirus spread prompted us to cancel last week’s Saratoga Farmers’ Market. We are optimistic the market will take place this Saturday at the Wilton Mall and will post any updates on our Facebook page and other social media. .

We value our shoppers, farmers, and the communities we serve. Your health is important to us. Current health guidelines indicate that foods available at producer-only farmers markets such as ours are likely to be safer than goods obtained from groceries or delivery services because the distance that the food travels is shorter and the number of persons handling it is less. Purchases at our market also support local businesses.

We are working with mall management to expand the market’s space. If weather permits, more vendors may set up outdoors. We also are encouraging vendors to keep hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes at their tables and to wear gloves or use some other means of keeping their hands out of direct contact with raw foods. All prepared foods will be prepackaged, and we have put the offers of samples on hold.

ere’s how you can help us keep our market healthy, too:

• Wash your hands if you eat just before shopping.

• Try not to congregate too tightly around vendor tables.

• Allow our vendors to hand produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, and other food items to you. Try not to touch baskets of carrots, bags of lettuce, cabbage heads or other such items yourself.

• Be patient, as vendors clean their hands in between handling produce and money. Some vendors might have different people delegated to taking care of these tasks.

• If you are not feeling well, do not enter the market directly. Contact our vendors in advance, or the market manager. We can arrange for a curbside pickup, and in some cases, a delivery.

Last week, Pleasant Valley Farm drew on its extensive mailing list to survey customers and based on the nearly 70 responses, set up a drop point for preorders as well as a home delivery service. As Pleasant Valley’s Robert Arnold said, the goal “is to provide fresh, healthy produce to all of our faithful customers in the region any way we can.” We look forward to seeing you soon.

Hello my Foodie Friends !

I love cheesecake. There I said it. I think my love of cheesecake stems from early in my childhood watching my relatives entertain and cheesecake being one of those wonderful dessert items that was served with coffee after the meal. As a child, I was given a piece if I was good. Being one of five children, that was often times a challenge. So, why do so many people love to eat cheesecake? Cheesecake is creamy and yummy and can please some of the most discerning taste buds. The cheesecake has evolved with so many recipes over the years adopting ingredients from family traditions, or by adding fillings or flavors making it a personalized treat. Making cheesecake can be easy. The ingredients and the recipe can be flexible.

Cheesecake can be a unique global dessert. Each region of the world also has its own take on the best way to make the dessert. Italians use ricotta cheese, while the Greeks use mizithra or feta. Germans prefer cottage cheese, while the Japanese use a combination of cornstarch and egg whites. There are specialty cheesecakes that include blue cheese, seafood, spicy chilies and even tofu! In spite of all the variations, the popular dessert’s main ingredients – cheese, wheat and a sweetener –remain the same. No matter how you slice it, cheesecake is truly a dessert that has stood the test of time. From its earliest recorded beginnings on Samos over 4,000 years ago to its current iconic status around the world this creamy cake remains a favorite for sweet tooth’s of all ages.

To help make a cheesecake, you do need very important tools – the Spring form Pan. Spring form pans are a kitchen essential for producing flawlessly smooth cheesecakes, perfectly crusted tarts, or intricate ice cream cakes without damage to their tops, bottoms, or sides. Meant to eliminate the risks associated with removing cakes from traditional pans, removing your product from the pan is the final step before placing your delicate

ie n w o r B l e m a Car cake Cheese INGREDIENTS • 1 (9 ounce) package brownie mix • 1 egg

• 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened

• 1 tablespoon cold water

• 1/2 cup white sugar

• 1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped

• 2 eggs

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1 (5 ounce) can evaporated milk

• 1 cup chocolate fudge topping (Sundae’s Best is the BEST)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease the bottom of a 9 inch springform pan.

2. In a small bowl, mix together brownie mix, 1 egg and water.

Spread into the greased pan. Bake for 25 minutes. treats on display, serving to your family or guests, or packaging them to go.

Many people ask me how I won Paula’s heart and I tell them on our first date I brought a dozen Red Roses and a cheesecake to meet her Mom and Dad. When I entered their home carrying both of them Paula said, “Wow, how did you know my mom loves cheesecake?” Thinking quick on my feet, I looked at Paula’s mom and said “here I got these for you!”

Paula’s mom quickly responded: “no one ever gets me flowers and cheesecake!” Her dad (retired Army Master Sergeant) just smiled at me and said in his southern drawl: “nice job young man”. I was on a roll with my improvising and I told them that, in my family, it is a custom to give gifts to the mom. So my sage advice to all young suitors out there is take care of the Mom and good things will follow.

3. Melt the caramels with the evaporated milk over low heat in a heavy saucepan. Stir often, and heat until mixture has a smooth consistency. Reserve 1/3 cup of this caramel mixture, and pour the remainder over the warm, baked brownie crust.

4. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla with an electric mixer until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Pour cream cheese mixture over caramel mixture.

5. Bake cheesecake for 40 minutes. Chill in pan. When cake is thoroughly chilled, loosen by running a knife around the edge, and then remove the rim of the pan. Heat reserved caramel mixture, and spoon over cheesecake. Drizzle with the chocolate topping.

THE SOUTH FLORIDA ROAD TO LOUISVILLE The Flamingo Stakes

THE SOUTH FLORIDA ROAD TO LOUISVILLE has produced its share of Kentucky Derby winners. For decades, until its demise nearly two decades ago, Hialeah Park led the way.

Let’s look at fabulous Hialeah, the Flamingo Stakes, and its nine Kentucky Derby winners. During the 1920s, South Florida with its warm weather and inviting beaches, was rapidly becoming the vacation capital of the East Coast. Northerners looking for a brief respite from the winter chill flocked to the Sunshine State. The swells also found paradise there, building luxurious homes all along the Gold Coast.

It was the perfect timing to bring quality horse racing to the Miami area. Joseph Widener, a major player on the horse racing scene, decided to build a world class racing venue there.

The architecture would be of a Mediterranean style. Royal palm trees added to the splendor.

Beautiful pink flamingos were imported from Cuba to inhabit the racetrack’s infield lake. The entire grounds were the epitome of class.

Widener understood major stakes races would draw the best horses in training to his track. He settled on two events.

Handicap. For the 3-year old Kentucky Derby hopefuls, the Flamingo Stakes made its debut in 1937. Kentucky Derby winners would rain on the Flamingo for the next 42 years.

In 1938 trainer Ben Jones took the second running of the Flamingo with a colt named Lawrin. He became the first winner of the race to win the Kentucky Derby. Jones success in the Run for the Roses was far from finished. He would win five more as the conditioner for Calumet Farms, America’s storied breeding farm of champions.

For the 1948 version, Calumet’s wonder horse Citation arrived at Hialeah. He breezed in the Flamingo on his way to the Triple Crown.

The Calumet standard bearer became only the eighth horse to win the coveted series.

To commemorate his Flamingo victory, a life sized bronze statue of Citation was incorporated into Hialeah’s paddock area. Citation, a racehorse for the ages.

The ‘50s and ‘60s can be considered the heyday of Hialeah Park. The greatest names associated with “The Sport of Kings” came together at the

Winter Palace of their chosen sport. The Vanderbilt’s, Whitney’s, Wideners, and the Phippses savored the beautiful grounds that were Hialeah. The trainers of the top stables readied their stock for the 40 day meet. Eddie Neloy, the father and son team of Moody and LeRoy Jolley, Horatio Luro and “The Sage of Sheepshead Bay,” (“Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons) were among them. Many of the premier jockeys in the country were eager to compete at Hialeah.

Eddie Arcaro, Bill Hartack, Angel Cordero Jr. and many other future Hall of Fame inductees vied for a trip to the track’s winner circle.

Racing fans and sightseers longed to be a part of the action.

Celebrities also found the track to their liking. Winston Churchill, Harry Truman, Bob Hope and Joe Kennedy were among those who made visits to the track.

On February 18, 1956 a record crowd of 42,366 converged on Hialeah to witness the great Nashua, take the Widener Handicap and become just the second thoroughbred to win a million dollars in purse money.

The 1950’s brought two more superb horses to the Flamingo and a trip to the Hialeah winner’s

circle. Needles took the 1956 version. He became first Floridabred to take the Kentucky Derby.

Needles went on to win the Belmont Stakes. He was piloted by the recently deceased Dave Erb, a longtime Saratoga area resident and race rider par excellence.

Two years later it was Calumet for the third time with Tim Tam. He scored in the Flamingo, then won the Derby and followed it up with a tally in the second jewel of the Triple Crown. He entered the gate as a huge favorite to win the Belmont Stakes and join the Immortals. As fate would have it he fractured a bone in one of his front legs during the stretch run.

He had the ferocity to hang on for second. Tim Tam’s short, but brilliant racing career was over.

In 1961 Carry Back took the Flamingo, charging out of nowhere to win the race. He went on to win the Derby and Preakness with his patented late move. Hugely popular, he thrilled racing fans throughout his long and storied career.

Then came 1964 and a Canadian- owned entry with the apropos name of Northern Dancer. The trio of E.P. Taylor, Canada’s leading owner, the dapper Argentinian trainer Horatio Luro and the superb riding skills of Bill Hartack added to the mystique of The Dancer.

He took the Flamingo on his way to victory in the Derby and Preakness Stakes. Northern Dancer went on to become one of the premier sires in the long annals of the sport.

The ‘70s would see the last of the Flamingo winners to take the Kentucky Derby: In 1975, LeRoy Jolley brought the talented Foolish Pleasure to contest the Flamingo.

The bay colt did not disappoint.

He took the race and followed it with an easy Derby score. Two months later Foolish Pleasure met the brilliant filly Ruffian in a winner take all match race at Belmont Park. The two gladiators were stride for stride down the backstretch when disaster struck. continues to next page...

Ruffian took a bad step, shattering bones in her right front leg. The great champion was put down after a valiant effort to save her life. Foolish Pleasure went onto have a stellar career culminating with a well-deserved induction into Horse Racing’s Hall of Fame.

Two years later it was the year of Seattle Slew. Tommy Roberts was at that time VP and GM of the track. Slew needed a tightener before his connections would agree to enter him in the big race. Roberts sought to convince enough trainers to fill the Flamingo prep. This was no easy task. No trainer in his right mind wanted any part of Slew.

With some arm twisting Roberts was able to gather a decent sized field. The competition was no match for the unbeaten colt. Slew decimated the competition in a blistering time of 1:20 3/5 for the seven furlongs and a track record for the distance. He easily took the Flamingo next time out

and went on to become America’s tenth, and first unbeaten Triple Crown winner. Seattle Slew, one of the great champions.

The year 1979 would see the last of the Flamingo winners that went on to take the Kentucky Derby. A dark gray colt named Spectacular Bid won the race with ease on his way to what looked to be the third Triple Crown Champion in succession.

Unfortunately, Bid stepped on a safety pin the night before the Belmont Stakes. Add to that a poor ride from his bewildered jockey Ronnie Franklin, and the dream turned into a nightmare. Bid was a tiring third in the grueling mile and a half marathon. Spectacular Bid went on to a fabulous career.

How good was he? There were no takers when he ran in his last race, the 1980 Woodward Stakes. The gray was breezed around the Belmont Park oval uncontested in a rare walkover.

Hialeah’s glory days were rapidly ending. Shifts in the population centers and the shuffling

of racing dates to accommodate Gulfstream Park’s surging business and better location were important factors in the decline of the once mighty Hialeah.

“All good things must come to an end.” The last running of the Flamingo Stakes took place on April 8, 2001. On May 22 of that year Hialeah ran its last

thoroughbred horse race.

By doing so, its effect will affect your communication in a positive way. This quick weekly tip will help you filter the confusion in some of our daily word choices.

This Week: Boycott, Embargo Boycott is the refrain of business or social relations to show protest.

The consumers are boycotting all the company’s products.

Embargo is a government prohibition on trade with another nation.

In 1987, England imposed a trade embargo on Iran.

KENTUCKY DERBY POSTPONED TO SEPT. 5; NYRA Issues Statement Regarding 2020 Belmont Stakes

NEW YORK — Tuesday morning, Churchill Downs Incorporated announced that the 2020 Kentucky Derby, originally scheduled for May 2, has been postponed and will now be run on Saturday, Sept. 5.

In response, New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) CEO & President Dave O’Rourke issued the following statement: “NYRA is working closely with all appropriate parties, including media rights holder NBC Sports, to make a determination about the timing of the 2020 Belmont Stakes.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to upend American life, decisions about large-scale public

events must prioritize public health and safety above all else. NYRA will deliver an announcement only when that process has concluded to the satisfaction of state and local health departments. The Belmont Stakes is a New York institution with wide-reaching economic impact. We look forward to its 152nd edition in 2020.”

Since March 12, NYRA has conducted live racing without fan attendance at Aqueduct and through March 17 restated its intention to continue racing behind closed doors.

The 40-racing days Saratoga Meet is slated to run July 16 Sept. 7. Spring training at the Oklahoma Training track, located on Union Avenue across from the main racecourse typically begins in mid-April.
