Longfellows To Close Their Doors in January 2023 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The owners of a popular local restaurant and hotel complex at 500 Union Avenue, Saratoga Springs, have decided to close their business. Co-owners Steve and Yvonne Sullivan and David Powers, partners in Longfellows Hotel, Restaurant and Conference Center, have determined it’s time for someone else to take their property to the next level. They will continue to own and operate their second restaurant, the Olde Bryan Inn, located at 123 Maple Avenue, Saratoga Springs.

The announcement was officially made Thursday, Nov. 3 that Longfellows will be closing its doors on Saturday, January 21, 2023. “After almost 50 years in hospitality, it’s time to step back,” said Steve Sullivan (Sully), coowner of the 9.5 acre property.

Steve continued, “A few weeks ago an offer was accepted from a group of investors/operators to purchase the Longfellows property. I believe Longfellows is in good hands. Going forward, we plan to continue to own and operate the Olde Bryan Inn for many years to come. I also look forward to time spent coaching those around me, as well as working on social service projects, some that I’ve already been involved in for many years.”

Sully continued, “We’ve spent over a third of our lives being good stewards to this property. Believe me, this has been the toughest decision we’ve ever had to make.

It’s been a great 26-year run. Now it’s time for someone else to bring this wonderful venture forward.”

When they first opened Longfellows Restaurant in May of 1997, the Sullivans and Mr. Powers recognized the former dairy barn to have ‘great bones’ that they hoped to simply embellish. In 1998 they built the Longfellows Hotel, which added 18 rooms to the existing building.

In 2003 they added another building with 32 additional rooms as well as a conference center.

Over the 26 years in business, Longfellows has accommodated thousands of hotel guests and hosted over 2400 weddings and countless catering events. Couples and families have made a tradition of celebrating holiday dinners at Longfellows as well as memorable

sacramental events in their lives.

Longfellows has been the host venue for the Dickens Festival, Longfellows Wedding Show and other signature annual events.

Philanthropists at heart, the Sullivans and Mr. Powers have hosted fundraising events for innumerable community organizations and area nonprofits. In addition, Longfellows has been instrumental in community outreach by offering weekly dinners in season for Code Blue, donating weekly dinners for Community Hospice patients and their families, and providing meals for guests of the local Soup Kitchen at the Presbyterian Church in Saratoga Springs year-round.

In respect to the Longfellows staff, Director of Human Services, Gerri Thompson, emphasized, “We’ve been transparent with our staff of 78 employees and are working diligently with our partners in the hospitality industry to place our employees in alternative industry jobs. We will continue to assist our employees in finding other meaningful employment before we close.”

Sully added, “As we’ve done over the past 26 years, any and all Longfellows gift certificates will continue to be redeemable at the Olde Bryan Inn. All frequent diner points will be transferred to the Olde Bryan Inn and ‘Mug Club’ members can still fill their mugs at the Olde Bryan Inn.” “We’re thankful for all the wonderful employees we’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years. They really did a great job serving each other as well as

our guests. We’re grateful for the wonderful vendors and suppliers we’ve worked beside and maintained relationships with. To all of our customers who stayed with us, dined with us, and celebrated with us, this is not ‘goodbye’. We look forward to seeing you at the Olde Bryan Inn!” In closing Sully added, “Our objective when we first opened Longfellows was first and foremost to be good stewards of the property and to those we were here to serve. Police: Fatal Motorcycle Crash Update HADLEY — The Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office provided an update to a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred in the Town of Hadley on Oct. 11, reporting they were notified by family members that 45-year-old Dennis J.

Mason, who was a passenger, succumbed to his injuries.

The accident occurred on Harris Road. Eric A. McFarlane, 48, of Hadley, who operated the three-wheeled motorcycle, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police: Three Separate School Threats in Twenty-Four Hours BALLSTON SPA — Authorities responded to three separate school threats in less than 24 hours beginning Oct. 26, the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office reported.

Two of the threats pertained to the Ballston Spa High SchoolMiddle School complex, and one pertained to Schuylerville High School.

The two threats at the Ballston Spa schools referenced violence by firearms and were made via social media outlets.

The threat at Schuylerville High School was made in person directly to other students and also

referenced violence by firearms.

The Sheriff ’s Office identified three students suspected of making the threats, and all three students – aged 11, 15, and 16 – will be charged with making a threat of mass harm and referred to Family Court for further action.

“If someone makes a threat against one of our schools, know that the men and women of our agency will turn over every rock to find you and to make sure our students and teachers are safe,” said Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo, in a statement.

None of the threats were deemed credible.

Sustainable Saratoga’s First Ever Paint Recycling Event Collects 60,000 Pounds Of Paint SARATOGA SPRINGS — Sustainable Saratoga’s October event was the first in the area to collect paint to be recycled.

Recyclers in over 600 cars dropped off over 60,000 pounds of paint.

Recyclers now have two

ongoing options for recycling paint. GreenSheen will pick up paint at your home as long as you have a minimum of 10 gallons and live within 50 miles of Rotterdam. Call 720- 854-8722 to arrange pickup. The second

option is that people in Saratoga Springs can take up to 5 gallons per visit to Allerdice Building Supply or Sherwin-Williams. Go to paintcare.org for a list of more drop off places and information about this recycling program.

Breakfast, Film, Live Discussion on Nov. 6 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs will be hosting a breakfast and a showing of the animated film “Tattooed Torah,” to be followed by a live discussion with Dr. Tomáš Kraus, executive director of the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic. The event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 6.

During the Nazi regime in Czechoslovakia, Judaica items were confiscated. These artifacts including Torah scrolls were brought to

Prague and given numbers. Then, during the communist regime, many were dispersed around the world. One reached Chicago where upon Marvell Ginsburg wrote what would become the beloved children’s book The Tattooed Torah.

The story, which was made into animated film, recounts the true rescue and restoration of a small Torah from Brno, Czechoslovakia.

Breakfast begins at 9:30 a.m., with the movie and discussion beginning at 10 a.m. Cost is $15 per person. Attendees must show proof of Covid vaccinations,

DEATH OF A KIND, LOYAL SALESMAN. SARATOGA SPRINGS — Christian Mathiesen, Jr., 99, passed away on October 28, 2022 at the Home of the Good Shepherd, Saratoga Springs.

Mr. Mathiesen was born on March 13, 1923 in Albany, NY, the second son of Christian Mathiesen, Sr., a civil engineer who had emigrated from Stavanger, Norway and Lola Federlein, a performance artist who had been raised in Buffalo.

After his parents’ divorce, he was raised primarily in his father’s household. He

was educated in the Albany Academy. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps. He served during World War II until being honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant.

Chris’ step-father, Wilson Codling, had given him a parttime job in the Tobin Packing Company beef cooler while he was in high school. After returning from the war, Chris began working full time at Tobin where he gradually transitioned to the sales department.

In 1949, while attending a wedding, Chris met the beautiful Peggy Ann McCormack, a recent graduate of the College of St. Rose and the senior class Rose Queen.

After an intense courtship, they were married in the Church of St. Vincent de Paul in Albany on January 7, 1950.

In the spring of 1954, Chris and Peg moved from Albany to Saratoga Springs with their three young children where Chris took over the Tobin Packing sales territory. Though sad to leave so many friends and relatives back in Albany, both Peg and Chris were welcomed into the Saratoga Springs community and made many new, lifelong friends.

They soon welcomed two more daughters to their home at 89 Fifth Avenue.

Chris represented the Tobin Packing Company in Saratoga County for many years and eventually retired as a salesman for Polascek Farms. After retirement, he and Peg spent winters in Venice, FL. They enjoyed many years as members of the Saratoga Golf and Polo Club where Chris played golf whenever he could.

He was recently cited as a 65-year member of the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Club. After converting to Peggy’s religion late in life, he became a faithful communicant of St. Clement’s Church.

Chris was devoted to his parents, his wife and children, his extended family, friends and sales customers. Peggy Ann was the love of his life. Chris cared for her during her final years as she suffered from Alzheimers.

They had been married for nearly 65 years. He was a kind and generous man, one of the last survivors of the Greatest Generation.

Chris was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife, his two brothers Jack Mathiesen and Frank Codling, and his sister Nancy Fraser. He is survived by his sister Diane Bartlett and his sister-in-law Marcia Codling, his son Christian E Mathiesen DMD (Fran), his daughters Pamela Pasciucco (Dr. Peter), Mary Ellen Mathiesen-Tyrrell (Bernie), Anne Macrae (Mike) and Karen Tobin (Craig) as well as twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

On Saturday, November 5, 2022, relatives and friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs. All are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial which will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will take place after the service in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Avenue, Saratoga Springs.

NEW YORK — The Christmas Lights NYC bus tour takes off with the North Pole Express, from Nov. 12 to Jan. 1.

This Christmas bus adventure starts with warm hot chocolate and cookies while passengers listen to elves tell a captivating Christmas story. The bus tour then takes a journey through New York City to see over 10 dazzling holiday lights displays from the Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Light Show and Rockefeller Christmas Tree and Radio City Music Hall to the Cartier Holiday Lights and Bryant Park Winter Village.

On the tour passengers will have the opportunity to sing Christmas carols, spend quality time with Santa, write their Christmas list and receive a sleigh bell as a gift from him while they tell him their seasonal wishes.

Children are encouraged to wear their pajamas and coats and will

receive a warm Christmas hat and winter blanket to keep cozy on the open-top Upper Deck.

The trip includes new storytelling, seasonal lighting and gifting surprises.

The North Pole Express will board and depart this year at the centrally based New York Public Library on 476 Fifth Avenue (42nd St. btwn 5th and 6th Ave.) near Grand Central and Bryant Park.

The North Pole Express comes in two package options: a Standard or Enhanced experience. The Standard is a 45-minute trip, 4-mile route, the Express is approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes.

BALLSTON SPA — The Village of Ballston Spa will stage its annual Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting Friday, Dec. 2 on Milton Avenue.

A home-town style tradition, this December favorite typically draws hundreds of spectators to Ballston Spa to watch the brightly decorated floats, fire trucks and community groups parading through the village. The parade steps-off at 6:30 p.m. on the north side of Milton Avenue and proceeds to West High Street. Following the parade, Mr. and Mrs. Claus will arrive on the back of an Eagle-Matt Lee Fire Company truck to light the tree in Wiswall Park.

Parade entries will be judged this year in the following categories: Best Emergency Vehicle Entry, Best Float Entry, Best Walking Entry, and the Brightest Light Award.

The parade will once again

spotlight the Toys for Tots campaign, in partnership with the Ballston Spa Community Emergency Corps, Saratoga County Sheriff Department and the U.S. Marine Corps. Volunteers from these organizations will be on hand to collect donations of new, unwrapped toys from spectators along the parade route as well as at the tree lighting.

The parade headlines a holiday themed “First Friday” in Ballston Spa. Home to unique shops, museums, and popular restaurants, Ballston Spa pulls out the stops for December’s First Friday by filling the village with a merry atmosphere. Many businesses will be open with special holiday activities and specials, while Ballston Spa High School singers and musicians as well as Union Fire Company band members perform carols on the street corners. Saratoga Chips and Beer Festival at Brookside Museum on Nov. 12 BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga County History Center has announced the Saratoga Chips and Beer Festival that will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa. Saratoga Chips are the feature of the museum’s current exhibit, “In the Saratoga Style: Potato Chips and Their Regional

Folklore.” Festival goers can enjoy Saratoga Chips, represented by Mechanicville’s DeCrescente Distributing Company.

John Kirk and Trish Miller of Greenfield Center will provide live music. To round off the festival, there will be a campfire, a S’mores station, a silent auction, and a game of potato chip trivia.

The festival, a benefit for the Saratoga County History Center,

is $20 in advance, and $25 on the day of the event, while designated drivers will be $10. SCHC members receive a $5 discount. Snacks and the first beverage are included in the ticket price.

Nov. 6 Ceremony to Honor 2022 Veteran of the Year SARATOGA SPRINGS — A ceremony honoring the Veteran of the Year for 2022 will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161 at 1 Elks Lane, Saratoga Springs.

The event is free and open to the public. Face masks are optional.

Veteran of the Year 2022 is David T. Wallingford, Capt, USMC a resident of Malta. Wallingford was born and raised in Albany, graduated from the College of The Holy Cross, Worcester, MA in 1966 and in 1967 was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 with the 3rd Marine Division in I Corps along the DMZ and was Honorably discharged from the

Marine Corps in 1970 as a Captain.

For his service in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation and various campaign medals and ribbons.

Wallingford was wounded in Vietnam on March 25, 1969. He was medevac’d through several RVN sites before being evacuated to the USNH Yokosuka, Japan.

While convalescing at the USNH he met Navy Nurse Lieutenant Helene Hill. They have now been married 52 years and are the proud parents of four children

and proud grandparents of eight grandchildren.

The annual award is co-sponsored by the Friends of the New York State Military Museum and the Capital District of New York Chapter of the Association of the United States Army. Presidents of the two co-sponsor organizations will present the award.

Saratoga County Supervisors Chairman Todd Kusnierz will present a Proclamation from Saratoga County. New York State Senator Jim Tedisco will present a Proclamation from the New York State Senate. A US Congressional Proclamation and a flag will be presented by Congressman Tonko and remarks by the Adjutant General of the State of New York will be given.

In a letter submitted to the city, Frederick Scheidt, Jr., who has owned the property since 2000, writes that the three buildings on the property are “in poor to terrible condition,” adding the city determined in 2021 the “out buildings should be demolished,” and that the main building sustained a catastrophic fire this past May. “I would like to see a much nicer building or buildings on this property,” Scheidt writes.

Man Found Dead at Congress Park SARATOGA SPRINGS — A 30-year-old man was found dead in Congress Park early Monday.

According to Saratoga Springs Police shortly at approximately 12:19 a.m. Monday, a request for assistance to locate a missing person believed to be in downtown Saratoga Springs was received by local authorities from the Colonie Police Department.

The man was found at 2:01 a.m. deceased in the pond by the war memorial, police said.

“Based on the information that we discovered, including a review of the city cameras, the male was alone at the time and there is nothing to indicate any foul play,” city police said, in a statement released Tuesday morning. “An autopsy was conducted and currently there does not appear to be any criminal aspect to the investigation. Toxicology is pending.”

The name of the man is being withheld, out of respect for the family, according to the statement.

Code Blue Emergency Shelter Now Open Nightly

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The city-based Code Blue winter emergency shelter on Adelphi Street is now open every night, Shelters of Saratoga announced Oct. 26.

The venue will provide nightly shelter from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. until April 2023.

Additionally, on days when the temperature drops below 32 degrees, daytime respite with a navigation center where community partner agencies provide client services will be available. Services this winter have expanded to include case management, which provides the means for guests to move out of homelessness.

The building which houses

the shelter, located just off South Broadway, is leased through April 30, 2023 at a cost of $8,000 per month.

Plans were unveiled in October to site a permanent 24/7 year-round shelter on cityowned property at the soon-tobe-vacated Senior Center on Williams Street. Proposals call for the development of the low barrier shelter and navigation center to be operational in early 2023.

The city expressed interest in also pursuing the possibility of constructing about 40 affordable housing apartments in an adjacent space on the parcel that would assist residents in their transitioning process - a continuum of care with the ultimate goal of helping people move from homelessness to sustained housing on their own.

Saratoga County Floats $378 Million Spending Plan for 2023

BALLSTON SPA — Budget season is underway at the Saratoga County complex in Ballston Spa, with supervisors in discussion regarding a proposed $378.3 million spending plan for 2023.

This year’s annual county budget – at $381.6 million – represented a near $11 million increase over 2021. Hitting the target proposal in 2023 would represent a $3.29 million decrease compared to 2022.

Additionally, the tentative plan would, for the for the first time in six years, not use county fund balance reserves, and reduce

the county’s Property Tax Rate by 5%, keeping it under the tax cap, says Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chairman Theodore Kusnierz, Jr. “With uncertain financial times ahead, homeowners will receive much needed relief with a 5% property tax reduction through a balanced budget that doesn’t borrow from the county’s fund balance,” Kusnierz said. “Importantly, the budget upholds our fiscally responsible practices, continues to provide vital programs and services to our residents, supports public safety and public health initiatives, and makes smart investments in economic development.”

Budget Month in Saratoga Springs: City Making Revisions to Proposed $54.21 Million Spending Plan

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The second Public Hearing regarding Saratoga Springs’ proposed 2023 budget was held Nov. 1 at City Hall. As was the case during the first public hearing, which was staged in mid-October, no one from the community stepped forward to be heard.

The city is proposing a $54.21 million spending plan in 2023, up slightly from $54.19 million plan in effect this year.

“We see our budget not just as a policy document for our city but also a road map and a moral compass for what our community prioritizes,” said city Finance Commissioner Minita Sanghvi.

“Our primary goal when making this budget was to ensure there were no cuts to our excellent and much needed city services, as well as no layoffs of our city employees.”

During the City Council meeting Nov. 1, Commissioner Sanghvi provided a year-to-date collection report. “Our 2022 collection for Sales Tax stands at $11.6 million right now, our Mortgage Tax at $2.1 million, and our Occupancy Tax at $572,000 – these are very good numbers for

2022,” she said.

A “critical priority” in this year’s plan is budgeting for the city’s 3rd EMS/ Fire Station. The long-debated third station will serve residents of the city’s eastern plateau. Just over $7 million was bonded in 2022 for building the fire station and additional $1.4 million is slated to be bonded in 2023 for cost overages due to inflation and supply chain shortages.

Sanghvi said considering 8% inflation and the “once-in-a-generation undertaking of a EMS/ fire station,” the plan proposes a Real Property Tax increase from $6.43 to $6.67 for Inside District and from $6.37 to $6.61 for the Outside District - an average increase of 3.72%. That increase translates to the following: if a house is assessed at $200,000, owners will pay $4 per month more on their property tax, $6 per month more if assessed at $300,000, $8 per month more if assessed at $400,000.

Independent department budget workshops have been held through October. A budget must be finalized by Nov. 30.

“During the month of November, we will make final revisions and bring it to the City Council,” Sanghvi said.

The proposed plan maintains funding for important programs and services, says County Administrator Steve Bulger. “In the wake of increasing inflation, soaring costs for goods and services, and an uncertain national economic environment, the County is tightening its financial belt while continuing to make key investments in services and programs to sustain the quality-of-life Saratoga County residents enjoy.”

The plan would keep the levy within the tax cap and provide homeowners the lowest property tax rate in the State at $2.12 per $1,000 of assessed value, according to the county.

The County sales tax revenue projection is $150 million, a decrease of $4 million compared

with 2021 sales tax receipts and approximately $8 million less than expected 2022 revenues.

Notable funding allocations includes nearly $53 million for investments in personnel, technology, and equipment for the District Attorney’s Office, Sheriff ’s Office, Probation Department, Public Defender’s Department, and Conflict Defender’s Office.

Other notable allocations: • More than $600,000 to promote economic development and tourism.

• Nearly $3 million for community development organizations that support initiatives including literacy and career development, history and culture preservation, and agriculture and environmental conservation.

• About $400,000 for the Farmland and Open Space Grant program to maintain the county’s extensive network of trails and open space.

• Usage of $130,000 in Opioid Settlement funds that the county says will “create programs and provide services to connect families, veterans, and underserved populations with communitybased treatment, rehabilitation, recovery, and support services related to opioid and substance use disorders.”

The Board of Supervisors will host a 2023 budget workshop at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 and has tentatively set a Dec. 14 date as a Special Board Meeting at the county complex in Ballston Spa for the 2023 Budget Adoption.

The Delicious Fun of Reading

for Saratoga TODAY “It’s really just fun to read a good book,” said Stephany Davis, the founder of Connection to Creativity, an organization that has helped encourage more than 900,000 children to love reading since 2015.

As a librarian at the Bahamas Atlantis Resort for 12 years, Davis saw that reading was losing the fight for kids’ attention. Her son, Aliko, also struggled with reading. However, there was a solution, she learned.

“Find what a child loves, and the child will read,” she said.

Aliko passed in 2017, but Davis has continued to make reading fun for kids. She moved to America that same year and found that the problem with reading was a universal one.

“When I came to the States, I realized the struggle was the same.”

THE LIFE-CHANGING POWER OF READING Connection to Creativity gets kids interested in reading by incorporating art and craft activities, music, and special guest appearances.

Previous sessions have included Books Bringing the Beats, where Dr. Suess books were transformed into musical renditions; Cuddle and Read, where kids constructed a teddy bear to take home with them; and Playful Picasso, a read and paint scavenger hunt.

“Every child learns differently; you have to find a way to get them engaged and involved.

It’s fun for kids to see books come to life,” explained Davis.

At home with parents who are busy with so many other things, finding the time to read with their children can be tricky, Davis has found. She suggests

including opportunities for kids to read while doing everyday activities – this can mean having them read a recipe and food labels while you cook, or clothing tags when you’re doing laundry.

“Reading is a tool in life to get you through life itself,” continued Davis, “It opens the mind and helps you learn how to deal with conflict. If I can get just one child to have a positive mindset toward reading, it can change their life.”

From October on, Apple-y Ever After, a 4-week paid course, will be incorporating games, apple recipes, a chance to meet with the farmer, and more.

Pam Has Spoken…

After thirteen years as proprietor of Spoken Boutique, and nearly forty years in retail, Pam Worth announces her

semi-retirement. “My husband retired two years ago. I have a son who lives in Utah. I have a daughter who lives in town.

I have elderly parents. I just thought, if I could knowingly pass the torch to someone who would totally take care of my

third baby, I would feel comfortable just stepping back a little.”

Pam says retirement wasn’t on her radar until she bumped into Tina Powell at a coffee shop about a year ago. The women know each other from years of working retail in downtown Saratoga. Tina, who had left merchandising to stay home with her young family for a few years, expressed a desire to step back into a retail career. Pam invited her to consider joining the closeknit team at Spoken. Once Tina started helping Pam with the buying and merchandising and assisting customers, she was hooked.

“It’s like a serendipity story.

It wasn’t planned. I never thought I’d get back into retail,” says Tina.

“It kind of rolled into something.

Tina was a perfect fit for us. She’s so knowledgeable. She’s a true Saratoga girl. She has an amazing retail background of over twenty years in downtown Saratoga… she instantly knew what this picture has always been painted as,” said Pam. Spoken has been voted Best Boutique in Saratoga Today year after year. Pam says the store is just as popular with tourists as it is with locals.

“When I am buying for the first quarter, I am aware of the financial landscape for our customers. They are coming off the holidays and are watching their dollar. However, they also deserve the same quality and customer service they have been accustomed to. Those customers that

come in those freezing months should still have great choices, just like our summer customers. It’s called “retail.” We are ever changing...but the same. On every level the customer service, the displays, the merchandising, the feelings and the warmth and of course the laughter are evident year round.

We have so much fun, it’s almost illegal. We really have a great time.”

When Covid hit and she was forced to close her doors, Pam realigned her business strategy.

She established a more prominent online and social media presence, creating the now-popular Pammy’s Picks. Customers either came in to pick up what they’d bought online or Pam would drive all over the area to deliver purchases to her customers.

“Any retailer that came out of Covid will tell you, you really felt the love of your customers. I know I did. There were nights I

would lie in bed thinking, ‘Thank you for these customers, because they kept us afloat.’”

Though the official transfer of ownership happened September 2nd, it is important to Pam that those customers hear the news from her first, before it hit the media.

“The continuity of the store is going to remain the same. The staff is here. I’m here. We just wanted our customers to feel like it was seamless… I don’t want them to feel a ripple, I want them to feel a flow.”

Pam plans to continue Pammy’s Picks, along with merchandising, buying and serving customers. While she plans to take more time traveling and enjoying family, she promises she and Tina will continue to work side-by-side.

While there isn’t a grand re-opening planned, Spoken customers can expect a special experience on Black Friday, a celebration of thanks from both Tina and Pam.

POLITICAL ACTIVITY AND VOTING AT WORK: IS ANYTHING PROTECTED?

Election Day is November 8. Some of us choose to keep our political beliefs private, and others are more comfortable participating in public discourse. But what happens when your boss disagrees? Can your political beliefs impact your employment?

Most of us are at will employees. “At will” means you don’t have any job protection either through an employment agreement or a law like the Civil Service Law applicable to some public employees, and you can be fired at any time for any reason as long as it’s not discriminatory or in retaliation for making

a complaint. Discrimination is an adverse employment action taken because of a protected status like sex, race, disability, military service, taking FMLA leave, age, etc. Retaliation is an adverse employment action taken because you’ve made a complaint about something the law protects like discrimination or discriminatory harassment or something like a workplace safety law.

What is not a protected status? Your general political beliefs.

So, as a general proposition, if your employer doesn’t like your politics or something you’ve said at work, he or she can let you go.

When can there be protection? Under federal law, private employees are pretty much out of luck. There is no federal protection for politically related speech in the private workplace. If you are a public employee, speech can sometimes be protected by the First Amendment, but that is limited in the workplace.

In New York, however, we do have some protection – but it’s still not as broad as covering general political beliefs. Instead, in our state, Labor Law § 201-d protects certain legal, off the clock (and off the job premises) “political activities” from discrimination.

An individual’s “political activities” are narrowly defined

to include: “(i) running for public office, (ii) campaigning for a candidate for public office, or (iii) participating in fund-raising activities for the benefit of a candidate, political party or political advocacy group.”

The statute also includes several exceptions where an employee would not be protected such as where the activity “creates a material conflict of interest related to the employer’s trade secrets, proprietary information or other proprietary or business interest.”

If an employer violates this law, the state Attorney General may ask the court to issue an injunction requiring the employer to stop what it’s doing and to impose penalties. An “aggrieved individual” (a person who has been harmed by the employer’s unlawful actions, usually the employee) may also sue for “equitable relief ” and damages. “Equitable relief ” means requiring the employer to actually do something – like giving the employee his or her job back – as opposed to merely paying the employee money (i.e., “damages”).

In general, and this is true under state and federal law, even if an individual’s political activity is not protected, employees are still protected from discrimination (employees being treated

differently because of their sex or race or some other protected status). So, if rules against political activity aren’t applied uniformly, then there may be a problem for the employer from a discrimination perspective.

In New York, we also have some voting protections – not necessarily relating to your employer getting wind of who you voted for, but so that you can vote in the first place. Employees have the right to take necessary (paid) time off from work to vote if they do not have sufficient time outside of working hours. Ten working days prior to any election, employers must post a notice informing employees of their right to take this time off, and an employee must give notice of their intention to take that time at least two working days prior to Election Day. To provide context: I am a retired FBI Agent. The City of Saratoga Springs has a vagrant crisis, and it has become the elephant in the room that city leaders are pretending not to notice. Last month, a local man testified, in front of city council, how a vagrant viciously attacked him. As I stated at the recent public hearing, the number one priority of any government is to keep its citizens safe.

The City Council is revisiting the Aggressive Panhandling Ordinance, which was originally rejected by City Council members; Jason Golub, Minita Sanghvi, and Dillon Moran. This ordinance, in substance, states a panhandler cannot physically contact or verbally assault a person. It also prohibits panhandling at ATMs and schools. There are no current penal laws that prohibit this type of activity. With a new homeless shelter bordering school property, this is a crucial component of the ordinance. Jason Golub, Minita Sanghvi and Dillon Moran are fine individuals, but will their ideology keep you and your family safe?

The true homeless deserve our kindness and we should provide them with the dignity they deserve. However, the fraudulent and aggressive panhandlers are committing crimes. We need reasonable and sensible laws to solve this issue. City leaders must keep their constituents safe at all costs and commit to public safety as their guiding moral principle as leaders.

inter is just around the corner and it’s time to get our bird feeding stations ready.

Nothing livens up a cold winter day like wild birds flitting and darting to and from your bird feeder. If you’re going to give bird feeding a try, the first thing you’ll need is a bird feeder.

It’s a fact of life that feeding the wild birds attracts squirrels. You’ll want a feeder that can discourage squirrels. Some feeders use the weight of the squirrel on the perch to move gates that cover the feeding ports.

Small wild birds aren’t heavy enough to activate the mechanism but squirrels are.

The bird feeder I use is called the Yankee Dipper. Why do I like this feeder so much? The more your feeder holds, the less often you’ll need to fill it. This is something you’ll appreciate during the coldest days of winter. The Yankee Dipper holds 5 lbs. of seed. Equally important, it is easy to disassemble so it is easy to clean.

It is also cleverly designed to stop squirrels. The Yankee Dipper is long enough so squirrels can’t reach the feeding ports when hanging by their rear legs from the top of the feeder. The perches at the feeding ports are spring loaded. They are strong enough to support perching birds but dip down under the weight of a squirrel. The only damage the squirrels have done to my Yankee Dipper is to the metal lid. Not bad for 15 years on the job.

To get the most enjoyment out of wild bird feeding make sure you invest in a good bird feeder. It is better to buy a good one that the squirrels can’t destroy than to keep replacing cheaper ones...in the long run a good feeder is less expensive and you also get the satisfaction of watching squirrels slide off the feeder without getting a snack.

If you already own a bird feeder, now is the time to get it all cleaned up for the season. We need to keep the feeders clean to keep the birds healthy. The feeder attracts all the birds to only a few feeding ports so it is important to keep those ports clean. They are all eating from the same plate so to speak so is best to keep that plate clean. Wash your feeder in very hot soapy water. After it is clean, soak all the feeder’s parts in a mix of 1 parts chlorine bleach to 10 part water. This will kill any germs. Let it dry thoroughly and reassemble. Now you’re all set to fill it up.

To endure such unrelenting cold, winter birds need to stay active. Calories and protein fuel this activity.

Black Oil Sunflower is higher in calories per pound than Grey Striped Sunflower. Black oil sunflower is

grown almost exclusively for wild bird feeding. I’ve found that the smaller black oil sunflower kernels are more easily handled by chickadees and other small birds.

The second most important food for wild bird to be fine cracked corn. Cracked corn appeals to ground feeding birds like cardinals, doves and juncos. When you shop for cracked corn, be sure you get FINE cracked corn. Bird seed is most often purchased in a blend. There are dozens of blends on the market.

Be aware that many blends contain “filler” seeds that no birds eat. The most common “filler” seeds are red millet and milo. Their red color increases their “eye appeal” to the humans that buy it. It’s more important that the blend appeals to the birds than to you. A 50-50 blend of a premium seed blend and Black Sunflower (left) makes a perfect wild bird blend.

Make sure you place your feeding station where you can see it. It is also nice to have a tree or shrubbery nearby. After the birds visit the feeder, they’ll flick to the nearest branch to peck away at their treat. This keeps them in close viewing range so you can enjoy watching your fine feathered friends at close range all winter long.

Another addition to your bird feeding station is a suet feeder. Suet attracts all the woodpeckers and nuthatches. There’s nothing more thrilling than having the large, red-headed Pileated Woodpecker visit regularly!

Robot Rumble Returns to BSHS BALLSTON SPA — Robotics teams from throughout the Capital Region, other areas of New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts will be convening at Ballston Spa High School on Saturday, Nov. 5 for the 2022 Robot Rumble Off-Season Robotics Competition. Those interested in learning more about the “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” or FIRST programs are invited to stop by to see the teams and robots in action.

The Robot Rumble will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the Ballston Spa High School, located at 220 Ballston Avenue in Ballston Spa. The event is free and open to the public.

strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 15 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.

Through the program, students get to learn 21st century skills; build and compete with a robot of their own design; learn to use sophisticated software and hardware; and compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments.

The FIRST programs provide students interested in the STEM fields with real-world engineering in a high school setting.

“Ballston Spa High School is

excited to be able to host this great opportunity to interest students in the STEM fields again after not being able to hold the event for the last two years due to the pandemic,” said the school district in a statement. Four area FIRST Robotics teams from Ballston Spa, Shenendehowa, Shaker, and Colonie have collaborated to organize this year’s event. The GlobalFoundries / Town of Malta Foundation provided a grant that will allow the FIRST competition’s Rapid React from last season to be brought to Ballston Spa High School for the Robot Rumble event. Off-season competitions provide an opportunity for teams to have fun and to recruit new students, industry mentors and sponsors as they begin preparing

for the FIRST Robotics Regional Competition in March 2023.

Similar competitions for elementary and middle school aged students will take place in December and January. The 2023 season for the FIRST Robotics Competition teams begins in January 2023 with a regional event being held at the Times Union Center on March 30th to April 1st. Sylvan Learning Opens New Wilton Location WILTON — Sylvan Learning, a tutoring company devoted to building academic confidence, igniting intellectual curiosity and inspiring a love for learning, is opening a new location in Wilton. The center will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 14 Mountain Ledge Drive. This new expansion

will add to Sylvan’s Captial Region portfolio, who already have locations in Albany and Clifton Park.

The goal is simple, if a child has fallen behind or is way ahead of the class, Sylvan has a program to challenge each student, build confidence, boost study skills and help deliver better grades. Now more

than ever, with many children losing out on learning due to the COVID19 pandemic, Sylvan learning will be a useful tool to help identify and rectify any gaps in learning that local youth may have suffered.

The new location will be run

by John and Audrey Waterfield, decade-long educators and

members of the 518 community.

After working for Sylvan Learning in Albany and Clifton Park, in both teaching and administrative roles, the couple saw a need for an individualized learning approach in Saratoga County.

Audrey worked at Sylvan as a teacher before becoming an

administrative manager for Sylvan’s Clifton Park location. John began with the brand when he was hired to fill Audrey’s role as a teacher. As students of Saratoga County return to a regular academic year, Sylvan learning will be a useful tool to help students, parents succeed in a postCOVID world.

s days grow shorter and colder, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market is grateful to take up our indoor home in the Wilton Mall this Saturday, November 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., where it will take place weekly until the end of April. This location offers the convenience of one-stop shopping for various products, ample parking, and convenient restrooms. The Wilton Mall’s food court area, with its luminous skylights, provides muchneeded warmth for vendors and shoppers alike.

Over forty Saratoga-area farms and businesses will sell a bounty of locally grown and produced items, including fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, bread and baked goods, artisan cheese, yogurt, milk, and honey, ready-to-eat foods, handmade art, clothing, and wellness products. Market-goers will see many familiar faces from High Rock Park.

In addition, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market will introduce several Holiday Boutique Market artisans and crafters offering various giftable items just in time for the holiday shopping season.

New vendors this season include Trendy Empress Boutique bringing comfortable, handmade clothing for children and babies. And King Creek Farms will bring pasture-raised poultry and free-range eggs to the farmers’ market.

As Thanksgiving approaches, customers can preorder holiday meats, stock up on fresh produce for sides, and find plenty of dessert options. Hepatica Farm and King Creek Farm will offer pasture-raised turkey this season, and they are currently taking reservations.

Family activities and market events will be festive and exciting this season. Farmers’ market staff and community organizations will offer weekly themed activities for kids of all ages and abilities. This year, Christmas and New Year’s Eve will fall on Saturdays, and local farms and producers guarantee the freshest ingredients for your holiday feasts. The farmers’ market also looks forward to special markets for Valentine’s Day, March Maple Days, and Easter in 2023.

Customers can rely on the market’s regular nutrition assistance programs as we embrace the season’s newness. Customers who own an EBT card can exchange their SNAP benefits for farmers’ market tokens to purchase fresh foods. Additionally, the market offers FreshConnect, a SNAP incentive program where every $5 a customer spends with their EBT benefits; they receive a $2 FreshConnect coupon to spend at the farmers’ market. I’M SO Gnocchi TO HAVE YOU”

Hello my Foodie Friends !

Many of our foodie friends love to experience new flavors and approaches to cooking. Recently, I had a conversation with a fellow foodie on their discovery of making gnocchi [nyoh-ki]. I shared my love story with these tiny dough dumplings that are most typically made of semolina, parmesan cheese, flour, eggs, salt, and potatoes. It began while watching the matriarchs of my family make them. I grew up watching my grandmother, mother, aunts, and cousins get together and create the dishes that were reflective of our Italian heritage and customs.

I loved sitting at the table watching them make gnocchi while talking half Italian and half English (I am sure the Italian parts were what they did not want me to understand!). They would roll the gnocchi by hand in preparation for our large family.

I would pay close attention to their hands as they would make the perfect dough. Sometimes, if I was good, I was allowed to stand on a chair and help them roll out long ropes of dough. Back then, they used gnocchi boards that were identical to the ones made today This simple gadget is still around and is a perfect tool in creating the shape of the gnocchi which is important for the sauce to cling to it. The ridges made by a gnocchi board are characteristic of classic gnocchi. When making gnocchi and using a gnocchi board, you place a small piece of dough on the board and roll the dough away from you using your thumb to press gently against the ridges. This will cause the gnocchi to roll into a slightly curved shape and leave an impression on the dough. While using the gnocchi board, generously flour the board to keep the gnocchi from sticking. Since the board is made of wood, we do not recommend putting it in the dishwasher. Instead, hand wash it.

INGREDIENTS • 4-6 potatoes, preferably russets

• 2 ½ - 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting

• 2 large eggs

• pinch salt

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Peel the potatoes and place them in a large pot, cover with water, add salt and bring to a boil. Cook until tender, about 40 minutes. Drain well and allow to cool slightly.

2. Using a potato ricer, rice the potatoes directly on your work surface. A ricer will give you the best results but if you don’t have one, mash the potatoes lightly with a fork. You want a light and fluffy consistency.

3. Make a small well in the center of the potatoes and add the eggs. Add a pinch of salt and beat lightly with a fork.

The board is easy to use and clean; wipe with a dry cloth or brush. Once you make your gnocchi, you can add it to what ever your favorite sauce is. Be creative and have fun creating some unique combinations.

4. Sprinkle 2 1/2 cups of flour around the potato mixture, in a circular fashion. With your fingers, gradually begin incorporating the flour into the potato mixture. Add flour until the dough is no longer sticky.

You may not need to use all the flour. The dough must remain light and airy, therefore knead with a light hand. The mixture will be very crumbly at first but as enough flour is added, a dough will form.

In order to test for readiness, take a small piece of dough and roll it between the palms of your hand. If it is too sticky, add a bit more flour.

5. Cut the dough into 4 pieces. Using the palms of your hands and by applying gentle pressure roll the dough into a long rope about ½ ” thickness. If the rope becomes too long to roll easily, cut it in half and continue rolling.

6. Cut the rope into approximately 1” pieces. Using a wooden gnocchi board, place your thumb on the gnocchi and gently roll across the board in order to form an indentation. Place the gnocchi on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper that has been lightly floured. Repeat with the remaining gnocchi dough.

7. If cooking immediately, bring water in large pot to a boil and salt. Drop gnocchi into the boiling water, stir gently and once the gnocchi have come to the surface, drain well and serve with your favorite sauce and Parmigiano cheese.

NOTES: • Traditional pasta dough requires a resting period before rolling.

Do not let gnocchi dough rest or place in the refrigerator before rolling, you will have a sticky, mushy dough on hand!

• The key to making gnocchi is to handle the dough with a light hand, as opposed to bread dough which requires vigorous kneading.

More Saratoga County Stories The second volume of stories published by the Saratoga County History Center (SCHC) covers various topics related to the history of Saratoga County. SCHENECTADY — A four act Rock N Roll/Doo Wop Spectacular will be staged at Proctors Theatre, 432 State Street, Schenectady, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Headlining the show is the legendary Chubby Checker. The singer grew up in South Philadelphia and formed a street-corner harmony group at age 8. His first hit record, “The Class” was released in 1959. By the summer of 1960, “The Twist” became a #1 hit, introducing the concept of couples “dancing apart to the beat” and leading to a revolution in dancing.

Jerry Harrison, Adrian Belew Tour to Stage in Albany in ’23.

ALBANY - Original Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison and noted touring member Adrian Belew have announced they will bring their popular ‘Remain In Light’ concert on the road in 2023, in celebration of the band’s iconic 1980 record.

The 19-date tour kicks off in Denver on Feb. 16 and stages a show at Empire Live in Albany on March 8.

Harrison and Belew will perform songs from the early 1980s period of the band’s history, and will be joined by a powerhouse band, including former members of Turkuaz, Julie Slick on bass, and Yahuba GarciaTorres on percussion.

Harrison played keyboards with The Modern Lovers in the early 1970’s (“Roadrunner, Roadrunner, Going faster miles an hour… with the radio on” if you don’t know), and joined the Talking Heads in time for the recording of the now-fourpiece combo’s debut LP, “Talking Heads ’77.” Belew worked extensively as a session, guest and

An Epic Story Nearly 30 Years in the Making: Local Man Launches Comic Book Company

SARATOGA SPRINGS — It is story was born in Saratoga a long time in-the-making that will make its landing in living color in the Spa City this month.

IT is called “The Supernatural Strings of Vampwyre,” a 32-page comic from the mind of Zack Lynch, launching the first book of what he hopes will be a quarterly publication with his new enterprise Blue Shack Comics.

“The first time I ever got to go to a comic shop was on Broadway (in Saratoga Springs). My mom took me and it was like a magic portal,” says Lynch, who subsequently grew up reading ‘Conan’ and ‘X-Men’ - “the two mainstays I read as a kid without fail, and after that pretty much everything Marvel put out.”

By the 1990s, Lynch began working for comic book companies, first as an intern and later graduating to doing coloring and production design. “Comics have been a part of my life forever, since I was a kid, and it’s been in

my career wheelhouse for the past 30 years now,” he says.

Earlier this year, he assembled a creative team in anticipation of launching a local comic book company and estimates approximately 50 brainstorming meetings have been held at Desperate Annie’s on Caroline Street – “that has been quite a creation hub for us” - since May. “I hired a team of professionals and knowing how every position works really helps. It takes about six people to put together a comic. You’ve got your basic creator – who comes up with the idea; your writer; you have to do sketches to get an idea of what the book is going to look like, then it goes to a penciller, an inker, a colorist and a letterer,” Lynch explains.

“Then all of that comes back to me for design layout and printing.”

The end result is Blue Shack Comics’ first issue: The Supernatural Strings of Vampwyre – a kid-friendly story about an AI rock star who deals with the experiences that all humans experience, Lynch says, from growing up, to figuring out who and what we are.

Book 1 is on its way back

from the printers. Book 2 begins production next month and is slated for release in the spring.

The hope is to release a new book on a quarterly basis. Lynch – who wears the title of creator, writer and editor of the book, also launched a Kickstarter campaign.

“I am the financier, and it is costly, but an interesting part is that it’s also being financed by old classic comics which are now exceptionally valuable. I have quite a large comic collection, and for this book I’m selling comics to make a comic,” Lynch says.

“The Supernatural Strings of Vampwyre” is slated to make its premiere Nov. 12-13, during Comic Con at the Saratoga Springs City Center. It will also be available at the website: vampwyre.com, where more information about the publication may be found.

the effort was led by one player in particular, the previous goal scorer and junior Ryan Farr. Farr was the first to the ball as a cross from Lucas Verghese swung into the penalty area with just under 9 minutes remaining. Farr’s header would make it 3-2.

“Ryan Farr is unbelievable,” said Shaker coach Dan Fountain in a post game statement. “We had him triple-teamed and he was still causing us fits and scoring a bunch of goals. He’s just an unbelievable player and the team uses him well.”

With 2 minutes left, the hattrick was complete as Vincent Devito assisted Farr for his third goal of the night.

“He’s been amazing all season and he kind of took the team on his shoulders and got us those goals,” said coach Jeffery Geller about Farr. “The team was definitely feeding off his energy, but we’re a little gutted on how it ended,” Geller would say to the

media after the match.

How it ended was frustrating for both Saratoga fans and players alike. Ultimately, it was a line judge’s decision to give a penalty to Shaker in golden goal overtime (meaning if one team scores, it’s over). Shaker’s Ben Halek lined up to take the kick, and with the stroke of his boot sent Saratoga home and claimed the Section II title for Shaker High. With 18 seniors on the Saratoga squad, the abrupt end of the season on a penalty kick may feel sour, but with an overall record of 15-1-1 and Class AA ranking of #2 in New York State, hopefully the momentum of this year can carry the program for years to come.

“Not only did we have a great season, but I felt like this group is a family,” said Geller. “I’m going to miss a lot of these boys next year.

They fought for each other. They played for each other all year and I really can’t ask for anything more.”

COLONIE — On Tuesday, November 1, the Saratoga Blue Streaks squared off against Shaker High School in the Class AA Section II final hosted in Colonie.

The fans in attendance didn’t have to wait long for the scoring as Saratoga’s leading scorer for the season - Ryan Farr - netted the ball off an assist from Owen Eldridge in the twelfth minute. In what would be a back-and-forth contest all night, Shaker needed less than a minute to equalize as Lesedi Sekhobo knotted things at 1-1, which is how the first half would finish.

Midway through the second half, the deadlock was broken by Shaker’s Kofi Sarfoh by way of a header from Nick Pepe. Just nine minutes later, Brendan Degan notched another for the Bison as they took what looked like a commanding 3-1 lead with less than 10 minutes left in the final.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Saturday, Nov. 19, the Saratoga Springs Firefighters IAFF Local 343 will be hosting the Saratoga Springs Police PBA in the annual Saratoga Springs Fire & Police Holiday Hockey Classic. The game will be played to benefit the Franklin Community Center’s Holiday Assistance Program.

This program has been essential in providing local families assistance during the holidays.

The hockey game and toy donation associated with it has the goal to ensure that every child in the area has the opportunity to wake up on Christmas morning to a present waiting for them. The game has seen continued growth with increased support each year it has been played.

This year’s game will be held at the Weibel Ice Rink (30 Weibel Ave., Saratoga Springs) with doors opening at approximately 6 p.m., after the conclusion of the Skidmore College game against

Southern Maine. Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m. Admission to the game is free with the donation of a new and unwrapped toy (or monetary donation). The game will include raffling items from various sponsors; King’s Tavern, Panza’s on the Lake, Skidmore Hockey and the Adirondack Thunder, with all proceeds going to the Franklin Community Center. SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Thursday, Oct. 13, the Saratoga Regional YMCA hosted its second annual Impact Celebration at the Saratoga Hilton to celebrate and reflect on its success with staff, volunteers, donors, board members and community partners. During the celebration, SRYMCA awarded its former Board President and CFO of the Fort Miller Group, Rick Schumaker, the prestigious Frederic J. Resseguie Leadership Award.

The Frederic J. Resseguie Leadership Award recognizes those who have displayed outstanding leadership for the Saratoga Regional YMCA and its community. It is named after Dr. Frederic J. Resseguie, who in 1957 donated his home on 509 Broadway to assist the YMCA in reopening in Saratoga Springs.

Rick is only the seventh recipient of this award since its beginning in the early 1970’s, with past recipients including major YMCA and community partners such as Nancy Lester and Michael Toohey.

Chairman of Stewart’s Shops and past recipient, Bill Dake, presented Rick with the award and reflected on many of his successes during his decade of service under the Saratoga Regional YMCA. Rick joined the Y’s Board

of Directors in 2012 and went right to work, playing a vital role in several growth opportunities for SRYMCA such as the Outdoor Expansion at West Ave to implement their new outdoor pavilion, Adventure Ropes Course, and numerous play spaces and activity areas for summer camp and programming to utilize. Rick was also vital to the 2018 Malta Capital Campaign in partnership with the Saratoga Hospital and has continued to help SRYMCA reach its annual fundraising campaign goals across its association.

Now, Rick is on the Board of Trustees for SRYMCA and continues to be one of their vital voices in the community. He and the Fort Miller Group have provided leadership gifts for their Annual and Capital Campaigns cumulating to over $500,000 during his time on the board, and now are major donors of the West Ave Capital Campaign with the Saratoga Senior Center. The Frederic J. Resseguie Leadership Award is a welldeserved honor for Rick, who has and will continue to be a major ally for the Saratoga Regional YMCA.

Saratoga Winter Club to Host Annual Saratoga Cup Nov. 12 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Winter Club will hold their annual Saratoga Cup and Northeast Series I Short Track Speed Skating Meet on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Weibel Avenue Ice Rink. Admission is free and open to the public. Speed skaters from the Capital District as well as from Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey and beyond will compete at this East Coast tradition.

It is the first time in the Saratoga Winter Club’s history that there is a female Race Director for the Saratoga Cup. Race Director Karolina Quinn said, “I’m very excited to be the first female Race Director in the history of our club, and it’s a role I take very seriously. I’m learning so much along the way and am having fun too!

I will say that since joining the club several years ago, I’ve met and worked with several women who would be outstanding Race Directors, so while I may be the first, I’m sure I will not be the last.”

Warm-ups on race day will begin at 8 a.m. with racing commencing at 9 a.m. Racing will continue until around 4 p.m.

Breaks will be taken to resurface the ice. “With Speedskating

being the fastest human-powered sport in the world, the short track races are definitely very entertaining. During our Saratoga meet the races will be very quick and maintain constant action.

At this meet you’ll see athletes from across the age and experience spectrum competing against one another, and supporting each other too, which is probably why so many athletes compete in the sport throughout their lives,” said Quinn, whose son will be competing in the meet along with other local kids, teenagers, and an adult from the Saratoga Winter Club.

Locally Grown and Heading for The Big Time QUEENSBURY — A Norway Spruce, which has stood in Queensbury since approximately the early 1930s will be headed to New York City on Nov. 12, after its selection as the 2022 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

The tree stands 82 feet tall and weighs 14 tons.

Erik Pauze, the head gardener for Rockefeller Center and selector of the annual Manhattan Christmas Tree, first saw this year’s tree in May. “Someone sent me a photo of a tree in Glens Falls, so I went to go check it out. On the way to go see it, I passed another tree in a vacant lot [in Queensbury], and thought to myself, ‘I need to come back to this tree,’” Pauze told Rockefeller Center Magazine. “After I finished with the other tree, I went back, walked up and down both sides of the street, and took a few pictures. I then did some calling around to find out who the owner of the tree was and made an appointment to inspect it closer… When I got closer, I knew it was perfect… I figured, let’s get this one to Rockefeller Center.”
