A. I’ve been doing this for 20 years.

Q. Do you work with them only around the holidays?

A. No, I do track too (during racing season).

Q. Which is your favorite time of year to be doing this?

A. I really enjoy track - this time of year is cold.

But there are people worse off than me cause they’re outside - but they’re the younger ones, we don’t put the older ones out. I’m 71 years old, so I can’t take the outside.

Q. How long have you been living in Saratoga?

A. Since ‘78. My daughter lives here too she just lost her husband a year ago to cancer - she’s 42. And my son is 38 years old. He lives with me. He has Asperger’s; he’s still with me.

Q. With the Salvation Army, what other projects should we lookout for this time of year?

A. We do lots of things. The toy drive...we also have clothes, and boots and gloves. We had a drive this year with the Red Cross and another organization got together and gave away coats.

Q. I guess you would say Saratoga is a very giving community?

A. Everyday, there is something going on with us helping.

SARATOGA SPRINGS/ BALLSTON SPA — This year’s season of giving kickstarted last week with the aid of the Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council (EOC).

EOC is a nonprofit that serves all of Saratoga County. Not only do they provide over 135,000 meals to families in need, but they also provide health, family, immigrant and advocacy services.

In the past three years since she’s been the organization’s Executive Director, Jo Anne Hume says that this year, she’s seen the greatest need for donations to local families.

“We have grown by approximately 250-300 baskets over the last three years. What do we attribute it to? It could be a number of things,” said Hume. “We think that it’s a growing need in the county.”

For two nights, community members and players of the Skidmore College Baseball team gathered at the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church and packed Thanksgiving baskets.

Over the weekend, the baskets were distributed to three primary areas including Ballston Spa, Saratoga Springs and Corinth.

Baskets were filled with corn, gravy and stuffing as well as produce carrots and apples donated by Saratoga Apple. Each family also received a gift card to buy a turkey.

These baskets will help roughly 850 families across Saratoga County with overwhelming community support.

“This is the true definition of neighbors helping neighbors,” said Hume. “Dozens of volunteers and hundreds of donors share our vision of a community where no one goes to bed hungry and really stepped up to make that a reality this year.”

The strong community support also allowed EOC to add distribution sites in Corinth and Ballston Spa to its traditional pick-up location in Saratoga Springs in order to better meet the needs of customers who may be facing transportation barriers.

“All of the work we do, we really depend on the support of others in the community… neighbors helping neighbors,” said Hume.

Sheriff Zurlo Announces Implementation of Polygraph Program MILTON — Sheriff Michael Zurlo, of the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office, announced the start of a new program with the recent training of a polygraphist.

Graduating from the Northeast Counterdrug Training

Center (NCTC) Polygraph Program is Investigator Jeff Bouyea. The Sheriff ’s Office also purchased, using drug seizure money, the most updated polygraph equipment available.

The polygraph program will be

used for criminal investigations as well as processing employment applicants for the Sheriff ’s Office.

The new program will be made available for Sheriff ’s Offices in the surrounding counties as well as in Saratoga County, Zurlo said.

SARATOGA SPRINGS ­ — The Saratoga Hilton today announced its 25th annual “Breakfast with Santa” will take place at the hotel on Tuesday, December 24. The special anniversary event will feature a festive buffet breakfast, holiday gift raffles and a visit from Santa.

LUZERNE — Members of the Albany-Saratoga Submarine Veterans Incorporated presented ‘Life on a Submarine’ to a group of school children affected with spina bifida at Double H Ranch.

The members showed where the crew worked, ate and slept.

The children asked lots of good questions and were presented with an official certificate and ballcap making hem honorary submariners. Children were also presented with a challenge coin they can keep or use at any submarine museum in the country.

Saratoga Race Course City Approves Season Passes Available $48.7 Million as Holiday Season Gift Budget for 2020 Offering For The First Time SARATOGA SPRINGS — Beginning Cyber Monday on Dec. 2, Grandstand and Clubhouse season passes for the 2020 Saratoga meet will be available for a limited-time only at NYRA.com/Saratoga.

Grandstand season passes are $50 and Clubhouse passes are $75.

All 2020 Saratoga season pass purchases made by Saturday, Dec. 7, are guaranteed to be delivered in time for holiday gifting.

Additionally, an all-new combination season pass and season parking package will be available for purchase, which provides fans with both admission and guaranteed parking at a significant savings.

A Clubhouse season pass with daily trackside parking is available for $195. Trackside

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City Council on Nov. 19 unanimously voted to approve a $48.7 million budget for 2020, as proposed by Commissioner of Finance Michele Madigan.

“Services are intact, initiatives are funded, and the taxpayer receives stable tax rates for my eighth year of service to this city, Madigan said, in a statement.

The city’s priorities for 2020 include capital projects for City Hall, the East Side Fire & EMS, and Loughberrry Lake Dam, as well as operating initiatives for cybersecurity, recreation and trails, public safety service improvements, and Code Blue/ homeless solutions.

The 2020 budget also includes

staff funding for city building and planning departments, increases for local non-profits, a full time hire to address ever-growing threats to cybersecurity, a newly established department for trail maintenance and two new police department hires.

Expense increases are offset by the use of reserve funds and sales tax and mortgage tax revenues.

The total 2020 operating budget is $48,715,918, with a tax levy of $16,136,984. This is well within the New York State 2% tax cap, and an average decrease in taxes from 2019 of 0.05%, Madigan said.

The 2020 Budget is available for review on the city of Saratoga Springs website.

Tonko Heralds $714,000 Award for Capital Region Small Business Support ALBANY — Congressman Paul D. Tonko, NY-20, announced this week that the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund has awarded $714,000 to the Capital Region’s New York Business Development Corporation (NYBDC). The award will be used to support financial assistance for small businesses across New York State.

“Investment in our small businesses strengthens our economy and supports quality jobs that make it possible for our Capital Region to grow and thrive,” Tonko said, in a statement. “Our communities have everything to gain when our small businesses receive these vital investments, which support both new entrepreneurs and innovators as well as established local companies.”

The goal of NYBDC is to promote the businesses and economic welfare of New York State by using federal funds to

leverage private investment to support local projects. Financial assistance is available to start-up, early stage and mature businesses, with emphasis placed on minority and women-owned businesses. The NYBDC and partners have invested millions in the Capital Region to date, most recently including $212,500 to purchase real-estate for a mental health facility in Albany County, $772,800 towards land for an e-commerce retailer in Saratoga Country, $716,500 for a tile and stone installation company in Schenectady and numerous other programs.

Over the last 25 years, The U.S. Department of the Treasury's CDFI Fund has awarded community development programs and other financial institutions more than $2.4 billion in grants. In FY2019, the institution provided awards to 261 organizations across 45 states.

Warren Tire Coming to Wilton

WILTON — Warren Tire Service Center is planning to open a new location in Wilton next year. The site was recently approved by the town and county planning boards, and is located at 573 Route 9, next to the Cumberland Farms convenience and gas station.

The family owned business has been running since 1983, and has 15 different locations in 8 counties across New York. Bob Kellogg, president of Warren Tire, says that this new site is a great opportunity to expand their business. “We’re looking forward to being in the Wilton area and Saratoga County, as we don’t have much of a presence there right now,” he says. According to the Albany Business Review, Warren Tire’s revenue has increased by 15% in the past year, to around $22 million.

says that he’s currently choosing between two construction companies to contract for the site, but construction will begin sometime in December.

An opening date of August 2020 is currently set as a goal, but nothing is set in stone yet.

“We’ve wanted to be in this area for many years, so we’re really excited about this new location,” Kellogg says. Warren Tire will also share the location with a Valvoline Instant Oil car service shop, which also approved for construction in September.

New Car Dealership Coming to Malta MALTA — Mohawk Honda recently bought Clifton Park based Northstar Chevrolet and plans to move it to Malta.

The dealership will be rebranded as Mohawk Chevrolet and the staff will be retained.

The new owners are working on plans to build a 62,340-square-foot showroom on Route 67 off Exit 12. The

facility will also have a service garage and will service all makes and models.

The property was in the previously reported site for the Capital Region Aquatic Center.

That center is now proposed for Mohawk Harbor in Schenectady.

The town planning board is scheduled to review the project for the first time Nov. 26.

Wellness Center at Spa State Park SARATOGA SPRINGS — Local businesswomen Libby Coreno and Stephanie Ferradino have partnered up to create COESA, a non-profit organization dedicated to wellness and healing.

The organization will provide mission-driven public programming in Saratoga Spa State Park. The group plans to occupy 2,700 square feet of the 18,000 square foot historic Roosevelt II building in the Park, officially opening its doors in spring of 2020.

COESA will offer retreat experiences and classes in its groundbreaking new center intended to inspire healing, raise consciousness, strengthen communities, and increase wellbeing.

COESA looks forward to partnering with other organizations in the Park for content, lodging, food, spa services and performing arts all in an effort to bring visitors to our region for collaborative, inspirational programming.

COESA is undertaking a $1M capital campaign to allow for the finishing of the 2,700 square foot leased space, including state-of-the-art audio/ visual equipment; creating an endowment to fund and attract world-renowned speakers, presenters and teachers; and for operations which would allow COESA to be self-funded within the first five years.

Hannaford’s “Fuel Kids at School” Program to Donate $1 Million to Support Hunger Relief Efforts SARATOGA COUNTY — Hannaford Supermarkets, who have a longstanding commitment to supporting hunger relief in its communities, announced a $296,000 donation to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, which will allow the nonprofit organization to establish food pantries in 33 schools throughout New York State.

Designed to serve as a vital and convenient resource to students and families in need while also increasing access to healthy and nutritious food, the in-school pantries are dedicated spaces where students can select food they enjoy based on their preferences and cooking abilities to provide nourishment both during and after the school day.

“At Hannaford, we strongly believe that our business goes far beyond selling products and that a key component of being ‘greater than groceries’ is investing into

the communities we serve. As a community contributor, we have a longstanding commitment to aiding hunger relief in our neighborhoods. This effort often begins at school, where hunger directly impacts a student’s ability to learn, grow and succeed,” said Hannaford Supermarkets Vice President of Retail Operations Todd Bullen.

The donation is one component of an overall $1 million commitment from Hannaford Supermarkets through its new “Fuel Kids at School” program, which is designed to directly address food insecurity and improve access to fresh and healthy food in schools in New York and New England.

The announcement took place in conjunction with the opening of the new food pantry at Troy High School in Troy.

Annual Winter Concerts

BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Central School District Music Department is presenting several winter concerts during the upcoming weeks. The concerts are free, and members of the community are welcome at all venues. Students and families are specifically invited and encouraged to attend and support the performing artists.

The High School Winter Concert series begins with performances by the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Orchestra on Thursday, December 5. The series continues with performances by the Concert Band and Orchestra on Monday, December 9. The final concert features the High School Choirs and Jazz Bands and will be held on Thursday, December 19. All performances begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Ballston Spa High School Auditorium at 220 Ballston Avenue.

The Middle School Winter Concerts will begin on Tuesday, December 3, featuring the 7th Grade Band, Chorus and Orchestra. On Tuesday, December 10, the 8th Grade Band, Chorus and Orchestra will perform, and the MS concerts conclude with the 6th Grade Band, Chorus and Orchestra performing on Monday, December 16. BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Education Foundation (BSEF) recently presented $6,047.80 in Fall 2019 grant awards to educators in the Ballston Spa Central School District for educational enrichment projects. The recent fall cycle included the following grants: $1,000 to fund the Scotties Pantry at the Ballston Spa Middle School (BSMS), $2,177 to fund the purchase of a large format professional art printer for the Ballston Spa High School, $1,470.80 to fund Sensory Paths at Gordon Creek Elementary School and $1,400 to fund a karaoke machine for BSMS. With these latest awards, the BSEF has funded over $390,000 in enrichment grants to the school district. The BSEF is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with an all-volunteer board made up of

community members whose mission is to raise and distribute resources for educational enrichment opportunities outside the realm of the daily operational needs of the Ballston Spa Central School District.

T he Farmers’ Market Cookbook : Rich in Recipes and History Since its original publication in 2002, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market Cookbook has existed on shelves as a piece of market history. The

cookbook pays homage to the founding of the Saratoga Farmers’ Market in the late summer of 1978, when a small but determined group of vendors began selling in the Spring Street parking lot. It’s a treasure trove of favorites gathered from vendors and shoppers and written in their own voices, many of whom are still selling at or supporting the present-day market.

• 1 ½ to 2 ½ cups sugar • 3-inch cinnamon stick

• 1 cup cottage cheese • 1 Tbsp. butter* • 1 Tbsp. sugar • 1 tsp. salt • ¼ tsp baking soda

• 1 package yeast • ¼ cup warm water • 2 ½ - 3 cups flour • 2 Tbsp. onion*, minced, or onion flakes • 1 Tbsp. caraway or dill seeds

Instructions: 1. Combine the first five ingredients. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and add to the combination.

Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Add the onion (sauté briefly if using fresh onion) and caraway or dill seeds and knead 8-10 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl and turn so greased side is up.

2. Allow to rise until doubled in size. Knead 3 minutes and make into a loaf. Allow to rise another 20 minutes while the oven heats to 350°.

3. Bake about 35 minutes until the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Serve warm or at room temperature. Makes one loaf.

• ¾ cup apple juice or water

• ¼ cup dried cranberries • 2 Tbsp. maple syrup*

• 1 lb. sweet potatoes*, sliced

• ¼ tsp salt

• 4 qts beets*, cooked and sliced

• 1 medium cooking apple*, chopped

• ¼ cup whole hazelnuts or walnuts

• 2 cups water

• 3 cups apple cider vinegar*

• 2 tsp whole allspice • ½ tsp whole cloves • 1 tsp salt • Onions*, chopped (optional)

1. Place the nuts in a dry frying pan, over high heat, and toast, stirring frequently, until they smell toasted and are not scorched. Immediately pour onto a chopping board or into a chopping bowl and chop finely. Set aside.

1. Combine all ingredients except beets. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer 15 minutes.

2. Pour the juice or water into a 10-inch skillet. Add sweet potatoes and shake the pan to spread them out.

Bring to a boil. Lower heat and cook, covered, until potatoes are almost fork-tender, about 10-12 minutes.

3. Stir in apple, cranberries, maple syrup, and salt. Boil gently for 5-6 minutes until the apple is just tender and the liquid is syrupy.

4. Place in serving bowl. Sprinkle with nuts. Top with a tarragon sprig if desired.

3. Pack beets in hot sterilized canning jars. Pour syrup over beets and fill to within ½ inch of top. If there is not enough liquid, add a mix of boiling water and vinegar.

Seal immediately and process 30 minutes in hot water bath canner.

NOTE: If you are not familiar with canning, you can refer to the Blue Book for instructions or you can place the pickled beets in the refrigerator for several days before eating. They will last several weeks in the refrigerator or several months if canned.

Ballston Spa Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting

Volunteers from the Toys for Tots, in partnership with the Ballston Spa Community Emergency Corps, Saratoga County Sheriff Department and U.S. Marine Corps. will be on hand to collect donations of new, unwrapped toys from spectators along the parade route as well as at the tree lighting. Ballston Spa High School singers and musicians and Union Fire Company band members perform carols.

After lighting the tree, take the kids to visit Santa Claus at Ballston Spa National Bank.

Tree Lighting and Holiday Fun at Gavin Park

Gavin Park, 10 Lewis Dr., Wilton 6:15 – 8:30 p.m. | Enjoy the magical lighting of our Colorado Blue Spruce Tree adorned with glittering lights. A variety of holiday decorations will adorn the park to create a special evening. The local fire department will bring Santa to the park, so he can visit with the children and provide a holiday surprise (while supplies last). The whole family will enjoy costumed characters including Frosty, Rudolph, and magical elves. A portion of the proceeds from the breakfast will go to support the youth programs at St. Mary’s Parish. We will also be collecting unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots, so please bring a toy to donate if you would like.

Saratoga Festival

Trees

December 4-8, 2019 It’s the most wonderful time of the year The 24th annual Saratoga Festival of Trees will take place Wednesday, December 4 through Sunday, December 8 at the Saratoga Springs City Center.

This fun, family event and craft fair puts everyone in the holiday mood. Walk amongst over 250 beautiful twinkling trees, wreaths, centerpieces and other holiday items for visitors to purchase or simply admire. Money raised at the festival will go toward Catholic Charities, which provides services for the community through family counseling, group homes, hospice care and mentoring programs for children.

This year, over 100 volunteers have collaborated to make the Festival of Trees as beautiful as it has been for two decades. Businesses, families and individuals

donate Christmas trees to the festival, which are then decorated, usually with a theme. People can then buy the fully decorated trees and have them delivered to their home or office.

For the children, Santa will be making a stop at the Festival of Trees, along with Rudolph and Frosty.

On Saturday, family day at the festival, families can have breakfast and sundaes with Santa. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Catholic Charities at 518-587-5000.

Guests can be the first to choose from the hundreds of trees, wreaths, and centerpieces at the preview reception on Wednesday, December 4 at 6 p.m. Food and drinks will be provided by Olde Bryan Inn and Longfellows. Tickets to this preview party are $75 and $65 for those under 35. Thursday night, December 5, is a magical night in downtown Saratoga Springs. It’s the 33rd Annual Victorian Streetwalk, brought to you by the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association with Co-sponsors MVP Health Care, Mackey Auto Group, Saratoga Springs Special Assessment District, Saratoga CoWorks & drb Business Interiors. The event takes place in downtown Saratoga Springs from 6 to 9 p.m.

Broadway will close from 5 to 9 p.m. from the Route 50 arterial to the Spring Street intersection.

CDTA, a festival Gold Sponsor, will be running free shuttle buses every 20 minutes from the following Silver Sponsor locations: Empire State College parking lot at 111 West Avenue on the west side of Saratoga Springs; NYRA’s Oklahoma track just off Exit 14 of I-87, Gate 21 on the corner of East Ave and Union Ave; the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame on South Broadway; and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center parking lot on Rt. 50. These shuttles will run to and from downtown from 4:30 until 9 p.m.

The Racing City Chorus will serenade the crowd surrounding the holiday trees at Putnam Market beginning at 5:45 p.m. as the children await Santa and Mrs. Claus’s arrival by horse and carriage (courtesy of Saratoga Casino Hotel). The Honorable Mayor Meg Kelly will light the trees at 6 p.m. Immediately following the tree lighting will be the start of the Santa Parade, featuring the Avant Garde Alumni Drum Line and Color Guard kicking off the evening starting at the City Center, playing all the way down Broadway. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be escorted in by Santa’s elves, the Dance Factory of Saratoga and performers from the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs.

Santa, Clara, elves and Rumple Dumple will visit with children throughout the evening in the beautiful Santa Cottage which will be located at the center of Broadway. The opportunity for visits with Santa in the Santa Cottage will begin on December 5 and continue throughout the month.

Enjoy over 40 sites with free entertainment, including live music, Living Nativity, Catholic Charities Festival of Trees, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Toy Soldier, face painting, magic, balloon art and more. Strolling amidst the crowds will be the cast from the Homemade Theatre’s, It’s a Wonderful Life; Carolers from Galway Players; Ebeneezer Scrooge and Company from The Christmas Carol Experience; and Victorian Carolers.

Co-sponsor Mackey Auto Group will be showcasing three new vehicle models, The New Faces of Ford and Subaru in the Capital Region. Co-sponsor MVP Health Care will offer a “Warming Station” including cozy and fun giveaways.

Coming to The Egg in Albany ALBANY — National touring music revue A Nashville Christmas will perform at The Egg Center for the Performing Arts in Albany at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The concert features traditional Christmas favorites along with songs by classic country

music artists such as Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard and others performed by the cast of classic country music revivalists, The Country Jamboree. The performance also includes guest appearances by Elvis Presley and

Holiday Open Studio at Saratoga Downtown Glens Falls' Hometown Clay Arts Center on Dec. 7 Holidays Weekend Starts Dec. 5 SCHUYLERVILLE — Saratoga Clay Arts Center is hosting its second annual Holiday Open Studio 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 7. Visitors can meet SCAC’s studio artists, see their studio spaces and purchase unique handmade pottery and gifts made at the Center. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

Former TV News Anchor Pens Murder Novel ALBANY — Fans of murder mysteries, athletes who relish carving turns on a pair of skis or a snowboard, or folks who like skiing for the social activities that take place after a day spent on the slopes ought to check out a new novel written by former WNYT-TV 13 anchor and Clifton Park resident Phil Bayly.

“Murder on Skis,” published

by Shires Press, is set at a fictional ski area in Montana, where JC Snow, a local TV reporter who grew up in Saratoga County, investigates a strange sequence of lives lost at Grizzly Mountain.

“I hope murder mystery fans will enjoy this book,” said Bayly, in a statement. “I couldn’t find a work of fiction written for adults set in the world of skiers and snowboarders, so I decided to write it myself! I think the book is a fun read and offers a fusion of personalities and places reflecting ski life across America.”

Bayly, who was an anchor and reporter at Albany’s NBC affiliate for three decades and covered everything from forest fires and presidential primaries to car crashes and the 9/11 terror attacks, is a self-proclaimed “mediocre ski racer,” who began writing Murder on Skis, while watching a sunrise at the Big Sky Ski Resort in Montana.

GLENS FALLS — Downtown Glens Falls celebrates the holiday spirit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 when the community ushers in the holiday season with the return of Hometown Holidays.

GLENS FALLS — Alice Cooper returned to the region with an assembly of gamboling ghouls and frolicking nurses, his guillotine, his straitjacket, and a five-member ensemble powering the decibels during an evening of diabolical merriment at Cool Insuring Arena last Thursday night.

Unlike many of his musical generational peers, Alice has amicably transcended the aura of teen angst anthems – at once both foreboding and exhilarating – into a delightfully entertaining show.

Born during - but certainly not of - the late ‘60s hippie era, the

original Alice Cooper Band (who sadly broke up in 1974) were mocked by some as the kings of “shock rock.” Fact is, the 2019 thought of a 71-year-old man running around in black leather pants and mascara and slicing the North Country air with a long sword is pretty startling.

At the core, however, is the music. And fronted by the masterful showman Alice is, singer and band delivered during their 90-minute set comprised of nearly two-dozen songs that drew heavily from the 1970s and ‘80s, including a slew of tunes from a quintet of albums first recorded with the original band that dates back to 1971’s ‘Love It To Death and ‘Killer’ releases.

SARATOGA SPRINGS/ BALLSTON SPA — Alexandra Nicolaus, a senior at Ballston Spa High School and a dedicated dancer at Saratoga School of the Arts is casted for the second time in her career, as the Sugar Plum Fairy in her studio’s annual production of The Nutcracker.

“This probably is my biggest role. I also did it as a Sophomore,” said Nicolaus. “It’s nice coming back to that role, but with more experience.”

Nicolaus began dancing when she was three years old. Prior to, she was enrolled in gymnastics classes, but her parents figured out rather quickly that she and gymnastics, just weren’t the right fit.

“I started taking gymnastics classes and I insisted on wearing a pink leotard and tutu to gymnastics,” said Nicolaus.

What a perfect fit that ballet tutu was as 14 years later Nicolaus Is still just as much in love with ballet’s unique blend of grace and strength.

Like many dancers, Nicolaus hoards her old dance shoes, kept protectively in a bin.

“Yes, I have a whole bin of all pointe shoes. I don’t throw them away...I keep them all.”

Among her collection of shoes is a pair that was gifted to her by her biggest inspiration, Megan Fairchild, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet.

“We had a school project that year to write a letter to someone and try to persuade them to do something. I wrote a letter to her and asked her for her pointe shoes,” said Nicolaus. “She wrote back a really nice response and sent me her pointe shoes.”

Contemporary, modern, ballet and pointe are all of the different artforms of movement Nicolaus dedicates several hours a week to.

From the seven days she spends in the studio, to her at home workouts and stretch routines.

Throughout all of the practice, time and performances, she names her mother as her biggest supporter.

find what you enjoy in it. It can be a lot to get here every day,

just working in the studio. But if each class you try and find

something that you love about it, it’s just more rewarding.”

“She comes to every show, she’s always in the front row, she makes sure I could be here (the studio) every day,” said Nicolaus.

Outside of the studio, Nicolaus is a dedicated student and currently the Salutatorian at her high school.

As a member of the student council, science Olympiad, and

being on the Junior Board of “Buddy, Blankets, Bears” a local charity in Ballston Spa) she has to strategically balance her school and dance life. Immediately after school she strives to complete as much of her homework as possible before attending her classes. To maximize her time, she

often stretches while completing her reading assignments.

While pursuing dance in college is a goal of hers, she is also determined to enroll in a pre-medicine program.

As Nicolaus looks onto the next phase of her academic and dance career, she leaves behind

some words of advice to other up-and-coming dancers.

“To always keep trying, and to find what you enjoy in it. It can be a lot to get here every day, just working in the studio. But if each class you try and find something that you love about it, it’s just more rewarding.”

SPORTS BULLETIN 2020 Skidmore Winter Baseball Clinic Registration SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kids ages six through 13 will be able to participate in a two-day baseball clinic at Skidmore College’s sports center. These clinics are designed to teach the basic fundamentals of hitting, fielding, base running, catching and pitching as well as advanced skills and techniques. This is a great opportunity to tune-up for the upcoming season.

Each night we will also finish with game competition.

Check-In: Packet pick-up 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. the day of the race at Skidmore College Athletic Complex. Parking, restrooms, and showers are available as well as refreshments after the race.

SCHUYLLERVILLE — The season was spent developing physicality and taking it one game at a time. After defeating Port Jervis 8-7 in the Class B state semifinals Saturday, November 23, the Schuylerville High School varsity football team advances to the state finals.

Black Horses will play Chenango Forks on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 12 p.m. at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
