SARATOGA SPRINGS — An early Sunday morning altercation turned into an exchange of gunfire that spilled onto Broadway and ultimately resulted in approximately 20 shots being fired.

The 3 a.m. incident believed to have begun as a verbal dispute at a bar on Caroline Street between an off-duty Sheriff ’s Deputy from Vermont and “a group of individuals from

the Utica area,” Public Safety Commissioner Jim Montagnino said, accelerated as the altercation moved west to Broadway with approximately 8 shots being fired. City police officers responding to the incident fired approximately 11 shots after the off-duty deputy allegedly ignored calls to drop his weapon.

The incident marks the first discharge of a weapon in the line of duty by a Saratoga Springs officer in more than a quarter-century.

Werner Brewery of Halfmoon: Turning Adversity into Opportunity

by Dave Waite | Sponsored by The Saratoga County History Roundtable, saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com Today there are at least two breweries along the Route 9 corridor in Eastern Saratoga County, each offering their own brand of unique microbrews to their loyal customers. Looking back in county history, we find that the commercial production of ale can trace its roots to well before the Civil War, with one of the earliest being the Werner family brewery in the town of Halfmoon.

The patriarch of this brewing family was Reinhold A. Werner, born in Gulmuthansen, Bavaria in 1827.

At the age of twenty, he emigrated to America with his parents, Melchoir and Rose Werner. After entering the country, Reinhold’s parents moved west, settling in Iowa, while Reinhold stayed in New York, seeking his own opportunities in his new country.

While it is not recorded if Reinhold and his wife Mary had married before leaving Germany, it was in 1850 in Albany, NY that their first child, Emily was born. Their second, a son named Henry A., followed three years later. Reinhold Werner was granted citizenship in May of 1852 and within three years he and his family had moved to Saratoga County where they purchased twenty acres of farmland in the town of Halfmoon. By 1860 Reinhold had established a brewery and farm on their property along the north side of what is now Werner Road. In 1865 the Werners increased their family again. with Mary giving birth to their third child, a son who they named Herold.

In 1880 Reinhold made his oldest son, 26-year-old Henry, a partner in the family brewery business.

The business prospered over the next four years, enabling Reinhold to enlarge and upgrade the brewery and build a new house on his property in Halfmoon. In an attempt to destroy the family business an unidentified arsonist burned down the brewery building in September of 1884. The fire also destroyed a nearby wagon house and storage sheds. Through a determined effort by those who responded to the call for assistance the fire that had spread to the Werner home was extinguished before that building was also destroyed. The loss, estimated at fifteen thousand dollars, was covered by less than five thousand dollars of insurance. Reinhold and his family immediately set to work together rebuilding their brewery and home.

After the business was rebuilt, Reinhold and his son Henry together ran the operation in Halfmoon until Reinhold died in 1887. At that time Reinhold’s younger son, Herold took his father’s place in the family business, the boys changing the business name to R. Werner’s Sons in honor of their father. In 1890 the plant in Halfmoon was sold to a joint-stock company and was incorporated under the name of Werner Brewing Company. At this time management of the business was split between the two brothers, with Henry moving the Ale business to Mechanicville and Harold overseeing both the lager production and the recently created Malt Medicine Company at that original plant in Halfmoon.

The medicine company came to be known throughout the region for the manufacture of patent medicine products including Werner’s Malt Tonic, Werner’s Malt Sarsaparilla, Werner’s Malt Cough Syrup, Werner’s Malt and Beef, and Werner’s Great American Anodyne. The Werner medicine products were marketed through salesmen who each covered specific territories solicited sales and delivered directly to local businesses. The Werner brand was also advertised in newspapers across the region, with one example from the Hammond Advertiser in St. Lawrence County. In these advertisements, the products were touted as offering cures for ailments as varied as indigestion and “obstinate malarial diseases” at the cost of only one dollar for 112 doses.

In the early hours of June 30, 1891, and only seven years after the first fire, flames again destroyed the Werner lager and medicine plant in Halfmoon. Starting in the boiler house, it quickly spread to the main brewery building, laboratory, then to their home, which was completely destroyed. In the laboratory at the time of the fire were 26,000 bottles of malt extract ready for shipment, none of which were able to be saved.

The business was again drastically underinsured, with the loss of buildings and equipment estimated at upwards of 20,000 dollars.

As part of rebuilding after the fire, the brewing of lager was transferred to the plant in Mechanicville and only the medicine company continued in Halfmoon. The Werner Brewing Company, situated on Viall Avenue in Mechanicville, was housed in a seventy-two by

eighty-foot four-story building.

In its heyday, the plant produced sixty thousand barrels per year that were distributed in both New England and the Northern counties of New York.

The combination of the financial loss from the fire and the death of Henry A. Werner at the age of thirty-nine two years later started a downhill slide for the Werner brewery in Mechanicville. In 1896 the Saratoga Brewing Company of Saratoga purchased the plant, taking over that part of the business.

Herold Werner continued to operate the medicine side of the business, and in 1909 incorporated under the name of Werner Extract Company to manufacture medicines and flavoring extracts. Over time mail order perfumes were added to Werner’s business, with newspaper advertisements as far west as Michigan for Werner’s American Rose fragrance, a product that offered “refined, fascinating odors, distinctly individual,” for one dollar an ounce.

While the original business model of Werner Extract Company was medicines and bottled extracts, within two years of their incorporation they had switched to the manufacture of fertilizer made by grinding and mixing potash-bearing rock, coal, and bone. One reason for this change could have been the recent enactment of the first Pure Food and Drug Act, which required the labeling of ingredients, including alcohol, on all patent medicines. Over the next 18 years, Werner continued to refine the process of making fertilizer as new and more efficient machinery became available.

After a large quarry of four percent potash-bearing shale had been discovered in Halfmoon, the Werner Extract Company took advantage of this business opportunity and in 1920 invested in additional machinery to convert the rock into fertilizer. Advertised as a top dressing for meadows and supplement for fruitbearing trees and shrubs, the Werner company sold Werner’s Natural Fertilizer for the next ten years both by the ton or in 100-pound sacks.

On October 24, 1930, Herold J. Werner was stricken with a fatal heart attack. With his passing the last of the family businesses were closed, ending 70 years and two generations of Werner brewery and patent medicine production in the town of Halfmoon.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties invites the local community to unwrap the magic of the holiday season at their 27th annual fundraiser – The Festival of Trees – on Wednesday, Nov. 30 through Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Saratoga Springs City Center.

The Festival returns with a showcase of beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and other holiday and gift items for purchase. Festival proceeds will benefit the programs of Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties.

The Festival of Trees event hours vary as follows: Festival of Trees Preview

Reception, Wednesday, Nov. 30, 6-8 p.m.; Festival of Trees, Thursday, Dec. 1, 4-9 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 2, 3-8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 3, 12-7 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec 4, 11 a.m. -2 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person, $5 for Seniors, $5 for ages over 10 and free for anyone 10 and under, when accompanied by an adult. Special admission pricing set at $5 will be offered on Thursday of Victorian Streetwalk Weekend after 5 p.m.

After a two-year pause, Breakfast with Santa returns this year. There are three Breakfasts with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 3: 8:30-9:30 a.m., 10-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Sundaes with Santa follows from 1-2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 each. Children two and under are free. Adults must accompany children. Tickets include either the breakfast or sundae, a tour of the Festival of Trees, a photo with Santa and access to a variety of children’s activities for $1 per ticket. Activities include cookie decorating, face painting, manicures, ornament making, picture frame creating and letters to Santa. There will also be a Holiday Shop with gifts for purchase. Breakfast with Santa and Sundaes with Santa admission tickets are sold in advance only and can be purchased online at the Festival of Trees website or by calling 518-587-5000.

My brother and I remember when our dad would meet and see him off “under the L.” In 1956, he met his beloved wife Kathi of over 50 years in hairdressing school. They graduated, married and were soon working at his step dad’s business, Rivoli’s Beauty Salon.

Ben was a hairdresser for 20 years and lived the Bronx on Lurting and Bronxwood Avenue until the midseventies. We remember backyard parties where the food was hoisted in a pulley that was concocted with a clothes line… obviously, safety wasn’t an issue back then. The Christmas and birthday parties that they hosted each year were always over the top and they always managed to invite numerous guests because “no one should be left alone on a holiday.”

In 1975, Ben and Kathi built a house and moved us up to Saratoga Springs in 1976. Our grandparents decided to join us and sold their 2-family home.

Ben’s sister Josephine and her husband Samuel built a house next door as well. Our dad had a close and loving relationship with Josephine until her passing in July of 2013. He grieved her loss every day since.

Ben decided to retire from hairdressing and become a school bus driver for the Saratoga Springs City school district. He remained employed with them for 25 years and retired in the early 90s. His was dubbed “The Happy Bus” and he was loved by many students and staff.

He was also a Pinkerton during the summer for 10 years at the Saratoga Race Course and everyone knew Benny. In the mid-eighties he decided to sell tip sheets instead, which he happily did every summer for the next 32 years. You could always hear his abundant voice when you crossed the street at the Nelson Ave entrance. He was the greeter and had many loyal customers every year. My brother worked beside him for over 10 years and between the two them, many sheets were sold.

Our parents purchased a summer cabin up north on Hunt Lake and enjoyed fixing it up. They spent every

summer there and enjoyed it for over 15 wonderful years. They loved to fish and row their boat around the lake.

After our mother’s passing, he worked for a few more years and then retired from the racetrack. In late 2021 he decided not to remain in his house and moved to the Home of the Good Shepard where he resided for almost a year and a half. Friends and family visited him regularly and he particularly loved the visits with our dogs because Benny was an animal lover. Every one of the staff loved our dad and they flowed to his room to say goodbye to him. Each person shared their personal memories and experiences they had with him.

There were many tears and smiles.

We’re so proud of our dad. No one in our family could imagine having to give up your independence, home and driver’s license… all in one year.

This man moved from a two-story house into one room and accepted it with grace. He tried to live his life as best as he knew how. Our father Ben is a true warrior, and I certainly learned a lot from him, especially toward the end. We had a lot of beautiful long talks about life and how fortunate he was to have lived this long. He was a wise man in many ways and lived his life… his way.

Thank you, dad, for everything you did for us, we love you very much and your creative and funny vocabulary will live on! You’ll certainly be missed.

Rest in peace, my man.

His memorial will be private as will the family burial at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Benjamin Anthony Lauricella (Benny) was 89 years when he passed away at the Home of the Good Shepard in Malta, NY. He was born in Manhattan on July 3, 1933.

He came into this world with a bang and left the same way. He passed peacefully on Veteran’s Day, 11-1122. God bless you, dad!

He is survived by his son Dan Lauricella, daughter Daneen, sonin-law Don and Dan’s wife Jeannie.

He also had four grandchildren.

Natasha, Daniel, Jayna and Kristen.

Ben joined the U.S. Navy in 1951 and was active for four years, inactive for another four. He travelled around the world twice and shared his many stories with friends and family. He was on the U.S. Cogswell- DD651 and a 3rd class petty officer-commissary. He was on a Mediterranean and Korean cruise, and was a Korean War Veteran. He told us about the ceremony of the “pollywogs to shellbacks” as well as many of his other adventures.

After returning home, hairdressing was his main target.

His step dad Mario and mom Fifi, lived in the Bronx and near his only sister Josephine. She was 7 years older. He could speak fluent Italian because his parents came from Sicily, Italy. His father Daniel lived in Manhattan and joined us for occasional dinners and all holidays.

Margaret Mary Fueston

Margaret Mary Fueston (nee Clarke), 75, of Nielson Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born on the 7th of April in 1947 in Saratoga Springs, she was the daughter of John E. Clarke and Margaret M. Prendergast, both natives of Brooklyn, N.Y. Growing up on Andrews Street in Saratoga Springs with her brothers and sisters, she attended both St. Clements Regional Catholic School and St. Peter’s Academy, the latter of which she graduated from in 1965. An avid Drum Corp enthusiast, Margaret participated in and supported several local Drum Corp organizations.

After graduation, she worked for Dr. Feynman for two years. In 1967, she met Thomas Fueston, a U.S. Navy sailor from Ohio; the two were married in 1969 at St. Peter’s Church in Saratoga.

For the duration of her husband’s military service, Margaret lived in various locations across the United States, including Charleston, South Carolina and the Hawaiian Islands.

After Thomas left the Navy, the couple moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where she would give birth to their two sons: Matthew – born in 1985, and Michael – born in 1987. In 1992, the family moved back to Saratoga area and took up residence at the family farm on Nielson Road, just off of Saratoga Lake.

Margaret would play an active role in both her family life and that of the larger community. A lifelong volunteer of the St. Clements’ Horse Show (later known as the Saratoga Springs Horse Show), she was often one of the earliest to arrive, providing coffee and greetings for other early arrivals. Oftentimes she would stay late into the evening, assisting in whatever capacity was needed. She was quoted as being “the happiest when I’m here” when talking about her experiences at the show. Her passion for volunteering could also be found in the Hot Lunch programs of both St. Clements and Spa Catholic (formerly known as St. Peters Academy), where she put in immeasurable time, energy and

resources. This passion also found its way into her husband and sons’ lives, who themselves would volunteer at the Horse Show and other endeavors for many years.

In addition to her work with the schools and the Horse Show, she would also contribute tremendously to the annual Festival of Trees, helping children design and build Christmas decorations. She took immense pride and pleasure in watching and helping the many children who visited her table each year. Margaret also found ways to contribute to the activities of her sons. Her presence and encouragement proved beneficial to them, whether it be sports or Scouting events. She would attend such events whenever possible, bringing comfort, food, and advice wherever she went.

This level of support was not just limited to her own family: many in her community also received similar encouragement and/or assistance.

An avid coffee drinker, Margaret would rarely be seen without a mug or cup either in hand or nearby. Always one to share, she provided hospitality to anyone who visited, be they stranger or familiar. Always willing to speak her mind on whatever matters she thought prudent, her honesty and no-nonsense approach cemented many friendships over the years. Anyone who visited her home or other gatherings with her, would be treated to food, drink, and a friendly disposition. Margaret possessed a sharp and keen mind and would regularly hone her knowledge and skills through games of Scrabble, crossword puzzles, and classic TV shows.

She was preceded in death by her parents – John and Peggy Clarke, a sister – Kathleen, and a brother – Michael. Surviving family includes: her loving husband of nearly 54 years Thomas Fueston of Stillwater; son Matthew & Brittany (Perry) Fueston of Milwaukee, WI; son Michael Fueston of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren Patrick Thomas and Rosemary Margaret Fueston, both of Milwaukee, WI; brother Philip Clarke of Saratoga Springs; sister Catherine Clarke of Saratoga Springs; sister Nancy (Clarke) White & Jim White of Queensbury; nephews John Clarke of Glens Falls, and Cullen White of Berkshire, MA; niece Jennifer White of Queensbury, in addition to many cousins living in and around the Long Island, NY / New Jersey areas.

Margaret was a supporter of Estherville Animal Shelter, the Jimmy Fund (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute), Team Billy Ride & Walk for Research (National Brain Tumor Society), and local food pantries.

NY STATE POLICE This month, State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Enforcement Detail in Saratoga County. During these investigations, businesses are checked utilizing a Trooper in plainclothes, and one or several underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or provide a false date of birth.

Renee L. Passino, 35, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced Nov. 7 to 3-1/2 years incarceration, and 3 years post-release supervision, after pleading to criminal possession of a controlled substance, first charged April 2022 in Saratoga Springs.

Garrett Toften, 42, of Middleburgh, NY, pleaded Nov. 7 to felony assault, first charged February 2022 in Halfmoon. Sentencing Jan. 23.

Joshua G. Boles, 33, of Ohio, pleaded Nov. 7 to criminal possession of a weapon in the thirddegree, first charged in October in Waterford. Sentencing Jan. 9.

CORINTH – Saratoga PLAN has received a donation of 127 acres from The LeClair for the Curtis Preserve, located in the town of Corinth.

In 1986, Patricia LeClair and her husband built a house on nine acres of land in Corinth purchased from neighbors Jack Curtis and Mary Curtis. Jack, Mary’s brother, was an old friend of Patricia’s husband. Over the years, Mary and Patricia became close and Patricia frequently walked in the woods that spread across both the LeClair and Curtis’ properties.

After Jack and Mary passed away, the Curtis’ property was left to the LeClair family.

Patricia LeClair held on to an article about Saratoga PLAN for many years and after thinking about how important land preservation was, she decided to donate 127.5 acres of her land to Saratoga PLAN. The donated property is mixed forest dominated by red oak, white pine, eastern hemlock, pitch pine, and American beech. The forest has been growing since the 1930’s, or earlier, and the property has a history of agricultural land use and timber harvest, creating a unique educational opportunity for forest management and succession.

Today the property is 100% forest cover with a peaceful brook running through the property offering cool, shaded areas for wildlife to rest during the increasingly hot summers.

habitat connectivity at the edge of the Adirondack Park. The now permanently protected property is also close to potential development threats on the Route 9N corridor.

The Curtis Preserve will be closed to the public apart from the existing S85 snowmobile trail that runs on the gravel road along the southwest border until a detailed management plan is developed.

Preserve management plans follow the purpose and priorities of conservation, encouraging biodiversity, education, and research in balance with public use.

Saratoga PLAN is a nonprofit land trust that preserves the rural character, natural habitats, and scenic beauty of Saratoga County so that these irreplaceable assets are accessible to all and survive for future generations. The gift was also made possible by Saratoga County’s Farmland and Open Space grant, where monies were used to pay transaction costs, and from the Nature Conservancy’s Resilient and Connected Network grant which will help with future stewardship needs for the land.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation presents “A Taste of Saratoga: Restaurants Then and Now,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

This virtual program will highlight restaurants, both past and present, located in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Featured restaurants include Pennell’s, Lou’s Luncheonette, The Ash Grove Inn, Ma DeMartino’s, Lillian’s and others.

Carol Godette, a former school teacher and author, will deliver the presentation. “For years, Saratoga Springs has been home to beloved family-owned and operated restaurants that have been cherished for generations.

I’m excited to share the history about Pennell’s – Saratoga’s oldest continually running restaurant that is celebrating its 100th year – as well as other restaurants that have offered residents and visitors of Saratoga Springs unique experiences, delicious recipes, and unforgettable memories,” Godette said, in a statement.

Saratoga Builders Association Donates $48,000 from Showcase of Homes SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Builders Association has presented proceeds totaling $48,000 from the 2022 Saratoga Showcase of Homes to Rebuilding Together Saratoga County and Habitat for Humanity of Northern Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties.

The Saratoga Builders Association contributed nearly $1.5 million dollars to local charities from this area’s premiere new home tour event.

The 2022 edition of the Saratoga Showcase of Homes had only 5 homes on tour this year due to labor and material shortages - Belmonte Builders, DSG Construction & Remodeling, Kodiak Construction, Trojanski Builders and Witt Construction.

This year’s tour attracted about 2,500 visitors to these beautiful new homes, which were on display over two weekends. In what has become an autumn tradition in the area, the Saratoga Builders Association is dedicated

Saratoga Springs Non-Profit Grant Application Program Now Open & Through Dec. 31 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Applications for The Mayor’s Non-profit Grant Program will be accepted online through Dec. 31, Saratoga Springs Mayor Ron Kim announced during City Council meeting on Nov. 15.

Applicants must be 501 (c) 3 non-profits located in or serving the residents of Saratoga Springs, and projects must fall under one or more of the following categories: Human Services, Housing, and Workforce Development;

Environmental Sustainability and Resiliency; and Arts, Culture, and History.

Four $10,000 awards and one $150,000 award will be granted.

Applications at the $150,000 funding level must be shovel ready and will ideally involve partnership and collaboration across at least two of the three funding areas.

In an effort to address growing community needs, as well as provide equitable access to city financial support for local

non-profit organizations, the Community Development Department, in coordination with the Mayor and Commissioner of Finance, established funding for a city-funded non-profit grant program, to be administered by the Mayor’s office.

City Plans Downtown Truck Traffic Study to Improve Broadway Corridor SARATOGA SPRINGS — At its meeting on Nov. 15, the City Council announced an initiative aimed at identifying solutions related to increased commercial truck traffic along the Broadway corridor.

Over the last 20 years, there has been an increase in commercial truck traffic on Broadway due to the development of several regional truck transportation distribution centers. The increase of commercial truck traffic has led to additional vehicular traffic using other residential streets to avoid Broadway. Additionally, there has been the establishment of increased outdoor dining, and increased traffic has led to increased vehicular and pedestrian conflicts.

Previously, the city completed traffic studies in 1996 and 2008 and developed a Complete Streets Plan in 2020 – which identified a high density of crashes involving bicycles and pedestrians along the Broadway Corridor.

The following steps have been identified as part of the Broadway Corridor Improvements Initiative: • Conduct a Truck Origin/

Destination Study of truck traffic in downtown Saratoga Springs.

• Review state route classification for Broadway • Evaluate policies for limiting commercial truck traffic in the downtown based on the Truck Origin/Destination Study The following streets have been identified as the potential study areas: Broadway (U.S. Rte 9); Ballston Avenue (NY Rte 50); Church Street (NY Rte 9N); Finley/Adelphi Streets; Geyser Road; Lake Avenue (NY Rte 29); Union Avenue (NY Rte 9P); Van Dam Street; Washington Street (NY Rte 29).

The city will be applying for up to $150,000 via a Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) grant through the Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC). It is anticipated the project will cost approximately $150,000 and requires a cash matching funds of not less than 15% of the total project cost.

The 2023-2024 UPWP covers the period April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024 and an estimated $1 million in federal funds will be available for planning activities. Project proposals are due Nov. 30, 2022.

Shots Fired: Altercation Spills Onto Broadway continued from front page...

During the initial dispute, the Vermont deputy was physically attacked by at least three people, Montagnino said, during a press conference staged at City Hall Sunday, less than 12 hours after the incident had occurred.

The Vermont man gathered himself at some point during the attack and by “apparently by moving his jacket back, showed the other individuals that he was armed. One of the other individuals then draws a handgun, points it in the direction of the deputy and then apparently begins to fire,” Montagnino said.

Officers responded to the scene.

“What they see is the Vermont sheriff ’s deputy, standing on the sidewalk, his gun

leveled and moving from sideto-side pointing the gun,” the commissioner said. “The officers repeatedly, loudly direct the deputy, “Drop the gun, get on the ground,’ again, again and again.

By my count there are at least eight separate clear unequivocal demands to put the gun down and get on the ground. They are all ignored.”

Three city officers fired a total of approximately 11 shots. The Vermont man suffered a number of wounds. A woman believed to be the Vermont man’s girlfriend was “nicked by one of the bullets in her upper arm.” The man is reportedly in stable condition at Albany Med. 200,000 BOOKS: Lyrical Ballad Has A Lot of Stories To Tell

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Fifty-one years running and a collection of 200,000 books stand to greet those who who journey to Lyrical Ballad bookstore on Phila Street.

Here, what begins with the first step of an innocent stroll leads to a sequence of new encounters, one room into another, deep and deeper still. Innumerable entryways sink into a labyrinth of characters and events. Things to be learned. Dreams to be launched. It is everything the mind can conjure and a few it never before imagined.

Here is where Congressman Paul Tonko chose to visit this week during a multi-county regional tour to highlight and promote the upcoming Small Business Saturday events this weekend.

“I think of small businesses

as the economic engine of our economy,” Tonko said.

“They have a vibrant offering and (provide) an opportunity for the community. Their economic impact is three times greater than that of our chain stores, so we have to be very sensitive to their needs and concerns,” said the congressman while standing framed by rows of leatherbound editions boasting the writings of Henry James, Gustave Flaubert, Balzac, Chekhov, and Thackeray.

“Many small businesses struggled through COVID, and so I also want to hear if they participated in any of the COVID programming, how that worked.

We came through a once-in-acentury public health crisis and economic crisis, (which) caused a global inflation. We just want to make sure everybody is strong and steady as we move forward so that they can contribute to the

whole economic picture.”

Small Business Saturday Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022 – is promoted as a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities. It was initially created in 2010 by American Express on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to Shop Small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses. In 2011, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of the day.

Lyrical Ballad bookstore was founded by John DeMarco in September 1971. He died in 2019 and two years later DeMarco’s wife Janice sold the bookshop to Charlie Israel and Jason Zerrillo the latter of whom worked at the shop for more than decade.

“We bought the business because we love the business, and so we don’t want to change it too dramatically “ said Israel, who

John (DeMarco) and a few other visionary business people took that on, and that brought Saratoga back from the brink, and I’m eternally grateful to him for that,” said Israel, adding that the notion of the electronic age displacing physical media such as books, has been exaggerated.

“The question hanging in the air is: how is the digital age affecting businesses such as ours?

And the answer is: Not as much as you’d think,” Israel said. “We’ve been here 50 years we fully intend to be here for another 50.”

The Game Has Changed

There is a scene in the movie “Vegas Vacation” where Rusty goes on the hottest of hot streaks on some slot machines. He later explains to his father that “I put a dollar in – I got a car” four straight times. While I am always careful to invoke any reference to Las Vegas while writing about investments, I think there is a parallel to be drawn between this scene and the last decade plus. Over that period, investors were almost immediately rewarded for buying any pullback in the market. Even during the depths of the COVID19 crisis, when the economy had completely shut its doors, investors were rewarded for being aggressive. I’m here to tell you that the game has changed.

Most people are aware of the basic tenets of Ivan Pavlov’s experiment with dogs. A ringing bell

signaled feeding time, and after a while, the dogs would begin to salivate at the sound of a bell. From the end of the Global Financial Crisis, investors had been conditioned similarly to buy anytime the stock market fell by a meaningful amount. The more aggressive one became during these dips, the more they were rewarded in short order. This year has broken that positive feedback loop, maybe for a while. The dynamics behind the “buy the dip” mentality have materially changed thanks to inflation.

Higher inflation causes higher interest rates because bond investors receive fixed principal and interest payments, and a depreciating dollar makes these payments relatively less attractive. As a result, bond investors demand higher interest rates on their investments.

There is a reason the investing community follows interest rates so closely – they affect EVERYTHING. The Federal Reserve typically grabs headlines with its interest rate policy, but it only directly sets short-term rates.

These rates going up are why you can now get more than 0% interest on your savings account.

Longer-term rates are set by supply and demand in the bond market. Banks take their cues from the bond market when setting mortgage rates, and as a result, the national average of a 30-year mortgage went from 3% to 7% in less than a year. Of course, this has a restrictive effect on the economy.

Higher mortgage rates -> less demand for buying a house -> slowing or reversing market prices for houses -> less stuff to buy to fill those houses -> and so on. This is a very simplified view, but the point is clear: access to money is much more expensive than it has been.

A secondary effect of higher rates occurs in the stock market beyond what is immediately visible. Obviously, a slowing or even contracting economy is bad for the overall market, but higher interest rates also affect investment styles and sectors. At its core, a share of stock in a company represents a slice of the future performance of that company. Investors will project what future cash flows to expect when determining how much to pay for that future performance.

When money is cheap, investors are more willing to pay higher prices for those companies that

project higher growth in the future.

Expensive money means investors become more discerning and focus on a more immediate future when allocating their investments.

One can point to the underperformance of technology stocks this year as Exhibit A of the game being different. Technology stocks and similar investments became relatively expensive during the era of cheap money, and we have seen a reversal of their fortune this year. How far that reversal

continues is something to keep an eye on. Markets go through cycles as the rules change. Are you prepared to adapt? We are.

‘You Need To Understand These Conversations’: Helios Life Enterprises Showcases Voice Tone Analysis At Startup Competition SARATOGA SPRINGS — Helios Life Enterprises, a Saratoga Springs-based startup, is making some big waves. The company was recently invited to the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield 200, where they showcased a unique product.

Out of thousands of applicants, Helios was selected to be among 200 startups at the event in San Francisco last month. The company showcased technology that can analyze voice recordings to see “how voice tone can truly change how we hear one another and understand one another,” said Helios co-founder and CEO Sean Austin.

Essentially, Helios can analyze audio and find potential

disconnects between the words that are being spoken and the way they are actually spoken, among other uses. Austin said that tone accounts for roughly 38% of a given message.

The opportunity to attend the Battlefield 200 was an extremely valuable one for Helios, said Austin.

“It meant a lot,” Austin said of the invitation. “That was just really helpful with those connections, really helpful that they recognized what we were doing is pretty unique.”

Austin mentioned that Helios received strong, positive reactions from large companies such as BMW, and said he was told by several people that Helios was one of the most interesting companies

at the Battlefield 200.

“We know we’re on to something, basically,” said Austin.

Helios also recently opened access to what Austin called their “entry-level product,” Comprehend: Composites, which was launched in partnership with Exabel.

“You don’t have to be an ultra-sophisticated super hedge fund, you can be investor relations, you could be someone who trades out of a smaller firm,” said Austin. “You can login, check how the call went that you care about for a company you’re covering, and you can see, visually, an

answer. That is, to us and to me, an incredible jump into what a product is for us.”

Looking to the future, Austin said Helios will continue to grow, saying companies will realize the importance of having this advantage.

“We’ll keep building this thing so that it can sell, it can be valuable, it can be efficient. From seeing it, I very much think a company’s going to realize they need to have this advantage,” Austin said.

“They can’t wait, and they will look to make a move, and Helios could be in the perfect position for that.

Skidmore College Improves Main Entrance SARATOGA SPRINGS — Recent improvements to Skidmore College’s main entrance off North Broadway support the College’s guiding principles of sustainability, accessibility, and enhancing the campus experience for everyone.

The project emerged as an early priority in Skidmore College’s Campus Master Planning process and is a collaboration between Skidmore, the Saratoga Springs Department of Public Works, Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, and the College’s Sustainability Office.

“This project was made possible through the support of many who lent their expertise and assistance,” said Dan Rodecker, director of facilities at Skidmore. “At every step, we worked together to ensure that the project was, and continues to be, in accord with best practices in aesthetic design and sustainable planning.”

Improvements to the main front entrance include new campus signage, new crosswalks to allow for safe crossing, new lighting and sidewalks, and the forthcoming installation of over 50 trees to replace trees that have been removed.

but also improving the infrastructure on North Broadway for the benefit of all city residents,” said Saratoga Springs DPW Commissioner Jason Golub. “DPW was happy to partner with the Skidmore team on this great project.”

Improvements to stormwater management include the installation of approximately 2,500 feet of new 12-inch buried stormwater line, the installation of three catch basins on the eastern side of North Broadway, and the re-creation of surface drainage swales to manage excess stormwater run-off.

In addition, the College has made improvements to the entrance to Glen Mitchell Road, installing a landscaped cul-de-sac with a 100foot turn radius that improves access and traffic flow and creates a better

turn-around area for larger vehicles including fire trucks, snowplows, and delivery vehicles.

The installation of a new sidewalk along the west side of North Broadway will extend pathways along the final 1,000 feet to the end of the street.

Together, these projects advance Skidmore’s comprehensive approach to sustainable landscapes, stormwater management, and improved campus edges and are guided by the planning principles outlined in the Campus Master Plan, including belonging, humility, and stewardship.

“We’re especially proud of how the renovated entrance welcomes people to the college campus, while still being part of North Broadway and the Saratoga Springs community,” said Skidmore President Marc Conner. “It’s a great symbol of the ways the College and the City are connected.”

The majority of the main entrance and North Broadway work has been completed, but additional tree planting, sidewalk construction, and final landscaping will be done in the spring. The College anticipates a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in spring 2023.

GREENFIELD — The Town of Greenfield has a new opportunity for kids to get involved in the community with the recent establishment of the Town of Greenfield Leo Club.

The Leo Club is a community service organization for kids between the ages of 12 and 18, and is directly affiliated with Lions Club International, said Town of Greenfield Club Advisor Brittany Campbell.

“It’s a really unique opportunity for Leos, because we have access to Lions’ network and resources, and we can deliver that to kids who are interested in getting involved in their communities,” said Campbell.

Campbell, who was a Leo Club member herself before joining the Lions Club as an adult, said the Leos often “piggyback” on goals from the Lions Club, but also stressed that the Leo Club can adapt to the interest of its members.

“If their school is having a food drive, and they want to get on board with that and bring Leo’s resources into that, that’s something that absolutely we can, at a certain point, let the kids take the reins and take over what they’re passionate about, and move the club in that direction,” Campbell said.

The Greenfield Leo Club held its first meetings in September, coinciding with the start of the school year. Campbell said many kids who join Leo Club eventually also join the Lions Club and mentioned that Leo Club can be a great opportunity for parents and children to participate in the

community together.

“If you can get kids involved, not only as the kids age out of their Leo Club do they have a tendency to become Lions, but it’s an opportunity for parents and their children to participate in service projects together,” said Campbell.

“I think the ultimate goal is to get kids involved in community service, and then it can be kind of like a bonding opportunity between them and their parents.”

The Greenfield Leo Club meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 6 p.m. at the Greenfield Community Center.

There are annual dues of $10 for the club, which Campbell said mirrors the Lions Club’s model and can help teach kids responsibility.

“We like to do that because the Lions have dues,” Campbell said. “This kind of gives the kids, on obviously a smaller scale, a sense of responsibility and ownership in the club.”

The club name is an acronym, with Campbell saying that Leo stands for “Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity.”

“I think that’s important, because those are really three of the main goals we have for being able to benefit the participants of the club,” said Campbell. “Anyone who joins a Leo Club, or a Lions Club for that matter, the participants really get out of it what they put into it.

“The more that we can give and do, the better we feel, because ultimately at the core of these service clubs, helping others really is its own reward.”

Schuylerville Art Ballston Spa Elks Lodge Donates to Scotties BackPack Program Club Hosting Paint Night Event SCHUYLERVILLE — The Schuylerville High School Art Club is hosting a paint night event to raise funds for the club on Dec. 16. Each attendant will complete a beautiful, finished painting to take home with them.

The event will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in room 257 at Schuylerville High School. It is $20 to attend, with the cost going toward canvas, paint supplies, food, and non-alcoholic beverages.

BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Central School District’s partnership program has again received generous funding from the Ballston Spa Elks Lodge #2619. Representatives from the organization presented their annual donation and received recognition from the district during a recent Board of Education meeting.

The Ballston Spa Elks Lodge continues to be a consistent supporter of the Scotties BackPack Program. For the 2022-23 school year, they have increased their annual support to $6,500 to assist with supplying weekend meals to students who may otherwise go without.

In collaboration with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, the district launched the Scotties BackPack Program in 2017, and

Meeting nutritional needs helps ensure students are ready to learn when they return to school.

The program originally provided weekend meals to 30 students and now serves more than 190

students in the district.

The cost for one student for the school year has increased from $183 to $228 for the 2022-23 school year. This increase means an additional $9,000 will need to be raised to support the same number of students as last year.

Revenue to support the program is raised by individual and corporate donations as well as through any available grant sources.

I also do it to pay homage to my 90-year-old mother-in-law for allowing me to tell this precious story each year. Thanksgiving would not be complete without my real-life

story of Grandma and the Turkey. It was 1993 when our children; Johnny age 2 and Aubrey 5 months old at the time, would make the annual trek with Paula and I to Grandma and Grandpa’s house to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner and watch football. Let me begin the story by explaining that I am a Giants fan and so is my mother-in-law.

Therefore, watching the Cowboys play is not one of our favorite things to do. However, her son is and so is my sister-in-laws husband. Yep, two Cowboy fans in the same house and they do not like each other! I love football so I watched but the room

was silent because the two brotherin-laws do not speak to each other.

They were holding their feelings down to make my mother-in-law happy. As the game was being watched, my mother-in-law was busy making a huge feast for all to enjoy. She was very nervous because she wanted everyone to get along.

We always ate after the game and this particular game one was a tight one. Most Cowboy fans may want to stop reading now. With just seconds left in the game, the Miami Dolphins lined up to make a game winning field goal and it was blocked by the Cowboys. The brothers-in-laws

were silent. I wanted to groan with disappointment, but held back because of the tension. All of a sudden one of the Cowboys (Leon Lett) chased the block field goal and touched it. Oh nooo! Well, the Dolphins got another chance to kick the field goal and won. Half of the house wanted to celebrate but my mother-in-law and I remained solemn. This game has been called the greatest Thanksgiving football game ever played.

As the game ended, my mother-inlaw continued working with Paula to complete the many dishes all

Sweet Potato Cake With Salted Cream Cheese Frosting INGREDIENTS

CAKE INGREDIENTS

• 1 ½ tsp. ground cinnamon

• 7 Tbsp. vegetable oil

• 1 ½ lb. sweet potatoes (about 4 medium), scrubbed

• 1 tsp. ground nutmeg

• 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract

• Nonstick vegetable oil spray (for pans)

• ½ tsp. granulated salt • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar

• 5 large eggs, room temperature

• 3 ¼ cups cake flour, plus more for pans • 2 tsp. baking powder

• 1 ½ cups light brown sugar • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted, slightly cooled

FROSTING INGREDIENTS: • 2 (16-oz.) packages fullfat cream cheese, room temperature

• 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, room temperature • 8 cups powdered sugar, sifted or whisked to remove lumps • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract • ¾ tsp. granulated salt • 3 to 4 Long orange zest strips (for serving; optional)

INSTRUCTIONS CAKE: Step 1: Cook sweet potatoes in a medium pot of boiling water, stirring occasionally, until a tester inserted into centers meets no resistance, 40–45 minutes. Drain and let sit until cool enough to handle. Remove skins, transfer flesh to a medium bowl, and mash with a potato masher or fork. Let cool.

Step 2: Preheat oven to 350°. Spray three 9”-diameter cake pans with nonstick spray, then line bottoms with parchment paper rounds. Spray parchment and dust pans with flour, tapping out excess.

Step 3: Sift baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and 3¼ cups cake flour into a large bowl (or just whisk to remove lumps).

Combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, butter, oil, and vanilla in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat

on medium-high speed until light, fluffy, and no lumps remain, about 5 minutes.

Step 4: Add eggs to sweet potato purée and mix well. Scrape into sugar mixture and beat to combine, scraping down bowl as needed. Reduce speed to low and with motor running, gradually add dry ingredients; mix just until incorporated. Divide batter evenly among prepared pans. Bake until cakes are slightly risen, tops are set, and a tester inserted into the centers comes out clean, 25–30 minutes.

Step 5: Transfer pans to a wire rack and let cakes cool in pans 5 minutes. Run a small knife around edges of cakes and turn out onto racks. Remove parchment and let cool completely (rounded side down). Tightly wrap cakes individually in plastic and freeze until thoroughly chilled (this will make cakes easier to frost), about 2 hours.

FROSTING AND ASSEMBLY: Step 6: Beat cream cheese and butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment on high speed until smooth and creamy, about 1 minute. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt and beat on low speed 30 seconds (place a kitchen towel over bowl to capture any puffs of sugar).

Increase speed to high and beat frosting 2 minutes. It should be thick and creamy.

Step 7: Place a cake, right side up, on a large plate or cake stand. Spread one third of frosting on top. Set another cake on top and frost with half of remaining frosting. Repeat process with remaining cake and frosting.

For the cleanest slices, chill 3 hours before slicing. Top with orange zest strips just before serving if desired.

cooking at once. There was a shout from the kitchen and Grandma announced that she had lost her glasses and could not see without them. Immediately, each of the brothers-in-laws was pressed into service to find the glasses. These were not just any glasses; they were big and black and hard to lose but there were no glasses to be found. We looked everywhere.

Grandma was close to tears when she asked me to check on and baste the turkey. This was a big turkey at 28lbs and it smelled great. I grabbed my son Johnny and the baster, which he took charge of, and opened the oven to show him the turkey. He said “look Daddy, the turkey can see better”. Yep, he found the glasses neatly melted in perfect harmony with the bird so it looked like he had eyes! I started laughing and everyone joined in.

Needless to say, we had ham and lasagna but no turkey. It didn’t matter because the rest of the day was perfect.

Through the fun and sometimes stressful events that can happen during the holidays – especially when we want it to be perfect; it can turn out to be a wonderful family gathering. On Friday, December 2 the Village of Ballston Spa will become a winter wonderland.

The parade steps-off on the north side of Milton Avenue at 6:30 p.m. and proceeds to West High Street. Following the parade, Mr. and Mrs. Claus will arrive on the back of an Eagle-Matt Lee Fire Company truck to light the tree in Wiswall Park. The parade will once again spotlight the Toys for Tots campaign, in partnership with the Ballston Spa Community Emergency Corps, Saratoga County Sheriff Department and the U.S. Marine Corps. Volunteers from these organizations will be on hand to collect donations of new, unwrapped toys from spectators along the parade route as well as at the tree lighting.

Music Program Offers Three Holiday-Themed Concerts ALBANY — The Music Program of the University at Albany’s Department of Music and Theatre will present three holidaythemed performances in December.

The annual Holiday Concert is 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, and is followed

by Twelve Drummers Drummin’ at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5.

The Festival Celebration Choir and UAlbany Chamber Singers will share a program of “Carols from Near and Far” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11. All three concerts will take place at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the

uptown University at Albany campus at 1400 Washington Avenue.

The Holiday Concert will feature four departmental ensembles and two student groups in a program celebrating the season. The UAlbany Community Chorale, UAlbany Chamber Singers, UAlbany Concert Band, UAlbany Jazz Band, UAlbany Symphony Orchestra, Serendipity and Pitch Please are all slated to perform.

Advance tickets to the concerts on Dec. 4 & 5 are $5 for the general public and $3 for students, seniors and UAlbany faculty-staff.

Go Van Gogh: Immersive Experience Extended to January

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience has been extended to Jan. 2.

SCHENECTADY — Nearly 100,000 people have experienced the immersive presentation of Van Gogh’s life and works since its opening in May at Armory Studios NY in downtown Schenectady, and organizers have announced the exhibit is being extended until Jan. 2, 2023.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, allows visitors to take a journey into Van Gogh’s life through cutting-edge 360-degree

digital projections, a one-of-a-kind Virtual Reality (VR) experience, and a light and sound show. Visitors will be able to step into more than 300 of Van Gogh’s sketches, drawings, and paintings by using floorto-ceiling digital projections, made possible by state-of-the-art video mapping technology.

Admission tickets start at $32 for adults and $19 for children.

The Streets of Saratoga: Foreigner: Feels Like The Last Time New Owen Wilson Film Announces April Screening

NEW YORK — IFC Films announced on Nov. 17 they are acquiring North American rights to a new comedy starring Owen Wilson that was partially filmed in and around Saratoga Springs in April 2021.

IFC Films will release the film in theaters on April 28, 2023 and will stream exclusively on AMC+ later that year, as first reported by deadline.com. It is not known whether scenes that were filmed in Saratoga County will eventually show up in the completed version of the movie, which is titled “Paint.”

Written and directed by Brit McAdams, actor Owen Wilson portrays Vermont public television painter Carl Nargle.

“In every step of making the film, we’ve fought to team up with

talented collaborators who are also good people,” said director and writer Brit McAdams, in a statement released Nov. 17. “From our first conversation, IFC felt like the perfect home for Paint, not only because of how much they love the film and how respected they are in the industry, but also because of who they are as individuals. We’re all beyond excited to have them add their signature to this picture.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Foreigner will launch their farewell tour next summer in Atlanta and will make an Aug. 1 visit to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center where they will be joined

by Loverboy.

“The time has come,” Foreigner lead singer Kelly Hansen said in a statement.

Hansen joined the band in 2005.

Guitarist Mick Jones is the only remaining original member of the band, which formed in 1976.

Suzanne Vega, The Music of Sam Cooke to Stage at UPH in Early 2023 SARATOGA SPRINGS — In addition to a previously announced performance by Kronos Quarter slated for January, Proctors Collaborative has announced Suzanne Vega – a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s – and a show featuring the music of Sam Cooke will be staged at Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs in early 2023.

Suzanne Vega broke into national prominence after cutting her teeth in Greenwich Village clubs such as Kenny’s Castaways and The Bitter End in the 1980s.

Nearly 40 years later, her self-titled 1985 debut album still stands the test of time for original music and lyrical storytelling. Vega will be joined on stage at UPH by her longtime guitarist, Gerry Leonard, performing favorites from across her career on Friday, April 14.

The influence of soul music pioneer Sam Cooke has spanned more than 60 years. Cooke, who had numerous popular hits as both a singer and a songwriter, was born in Mississippi in 1931 and died in 1964 at the age of 33.

Myers Wins BLUE STREAK ATHLETES Gold In Senegal COMMIT TO COLLEGES

DAKAR, SENEGAL — Melissa Myers from the Jason Morris Judo Center in Glenville won her first world tour event on Nov. 13, earning a gold medal at the Dakar Open in Senegal.

This result moves Myers into the top 100 on the world rankings for the first time in her career, as she now sits at #97 in the 70 kg weight class. Myers will stay on for the training camp in Senegal, then will compete on the second leg of the African tour this weekend in Yaounde, Cameroon,

before returning to the USA. While Myers was in Dakar, her JMJC teammates were competing at the Ontario Open in Toronto.

Jess Alaynick captured a gold in the +78 kg Under-21 division, while Justin Mata claimed a Silver medal in the 60 kg Under-21 category.

Two-time Olympian Nick Delpopolo was a double medalist on the day, winning a bronze in the 81 kg Seniors division as well as picking up a bronze in the Open Weight category to close out the JMJC medal count.

Skidmore Hockey Looking To Build Off ‘Positive Weekend’ SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Skidmore men’s hockey team was able to put together a “positive weekend” of NEHC play,

forcing a 3-3 tie with 7th-ranked Babson on Friday and defeating Southern Maine 6-2 on Saturday.

said the team aimed to keep their mindset and preparation consistent, following a weekend in which the Thoroughbreds beat New England College 7-4 and lost 4-1 to 10th-ranked Norwich.

“It’s kind of consistent in that we want to learn from each experience, win or lose,” said Hutchison. “Attack some different areas during the week, and then execute a little better each week.”

The Thoroughbreds certainly executed in the opening period against Babson on Friday. Kaeden Patrick gave Skidmore a 1-0 lead just 1:24 into the game, and Ryan Waltman added another goal just 33 seconds later to make it 2-0.

Patrick’s second goal gave the team a 3-0 lead after the first period.

“We were really focused on executing our game plan,” Hutchison said of the opening period. “Some guys made some really nice plays. There was really good energy in the building, so we were feeding off that. I think we were pretty excited to jump on them early, and that was part of the game plan, making sure we came out of the gates hot.”

Babson wouldn’t go away, however, and the Beavers were able to cut the deficit to one following the second period of play.

A powerplay goal by Colby Bailey landed Babson on the scoreboard, and another goal on the man advantage by Ian Driscoll made it 3-2 entering the final frame.

Hutchison said that Skidmore made some “self-inflicted” mistakes in the middle period.

structure and our focus on the game plan,” said Hutchison. “In the third, we kind of hit reset and said, ‘OK, here’s where we’re at.’”

The Thoroughbreds played a “pretty good period,” in the third, Hutchison said, but were unable to add on to the lead, and Babson tied the game with a shorthanded goal by James Perullo.

“Which is uncommon, our powerplay’s been really good,” Hutchison said. “We weren’t able to overcome that goal late. But we did kind of turn the corner and play much better in the third period.”

Tied 3-3 after three periods, the game went to overtime, and resulted in a tie after neither team was able to find the back of the net again.

“I think the end result was a little disappointing, considering our start to that game,” said Hutchison. “But we responded nicely on Saturday.”

Skidmore bounced back with a 6-2 win over Southern Maine on Saturday, with six different players scoring a goal for the Thoroughbreds.

“It was just all hands on deck.

Everybody was contributing,” Hutchison said of Saturday’s victory. “And it wasn’t necessarily just the offensive play. As the game progressed, we got better on the defensive side of the puck, which led to a lot of offensive scoring chances.”

After a scoreless first period, Kevin Urquhart gave Skidmore a 1-0 lead just under seven minutes into the second. Southern Maine responded just five minutes later, with Curtis Judd scoring to tie the game, but it was all Thoroughbreds from there.

Jaden York scored with eight minutes left in the period to put Skidmore back in front, and Zach Frisk added a goal just 1:34 after York to make it 3-1.

Devon Mussio extended the lead to 4-1 in the third, with a shorthanded goal by Thomas Finck making it 5-1 before Danny Magnuson scored the team’s sixth and final goal of the night.

Judd scored his second goal for USM with 8 minutes remaining to round out the scoring. Tate Brandon stopped 27 of 29 shots in goal for the Thoroughbreds.

“Everybody was chipping in offensively. That bodes well for us, I think, moving forward,” said Hutchison. “You want to have guys moving forward with confidence, and feel like they can contribute in all areas of the game.”

Following the 1-0-1 weekend, Skidmore is 6-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in NEHC play. The Thoroughbreds host the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational this weekend, playing Rivier University on Friday.

The winner of that game will face the winner of Oswego State and Wilkes University on Saturday.

Hutchison said that “the intensity should never waver” entering the non-conference matchups.

“Every game’s important.

We’re in a position where we aspire to win the conference and/or get an at-large bid,” said Hutchison.

“There’s so few of them that every game matters if you’re going to be in the conversation for that. We’ve talked about that as a group, and the guys are all aware that’s a goal.

The approach and the intensity don’t waver a bit.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Along with many other senior traditions, the Mega Bowl returned to Saratoga Central Catholic School this year. The seniors took on the faculty and coaches in a volleyball match at the Broadway Gym on Thursday, Nov. 10, with the faculty winning in three straight sets.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Wasaren League has announced its girls volleyball AllStars for the 2022 season, with three members of the Saratoga Central Catholic varsity girls volleyball team receiving honors.

Senior Jacqueline Fornabia was named to the Wasaren League First Team, while fellow senior Gianna Fiordimondo was named to the League’s Second Team. Saints junior Rylee Cornell also received an honorable mention from the Wasaren.
