Simeon Ford – Battle-Hardened Veteran or Deserter?

by Don Carola | Sponsored by The Saratoga County History Roundtable Contact The Saratoga County History Roundtable at: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com

In August 1814, Capt. Opie of the 5th Regiment of U.S. Infantry placed a bounty in the Plattsburgh Republican offering a $200 reward for the return of four deserters, including Simeon Ford, who was accused of deserting for the third time.

Ford was described as 24 years of age, 5-feet-7 and a half inches tall, with dark hair and eyes and a fair complexion. His occupation: brick layer. He was also described as a cunning, artful, imposing fel low possessing a “superior degree of loquacity” which he used “in a most imposing manner.”

The bounty posting said when Ford fled, he took with him his new regimental uniform, a theft which surely angered Capt. Opie, who later would report Simeon’s deser tion when applying for a pension.

Simeon Ford was the eldest son of Sanbun Ford, Revolutionary War patriot and early resident of Ballston. Born June 7, 1788, in Connecticut, Simeon made the migration to Ballston Spa with his parents in 1792, first stopping at Hillsdale, Columbia County, where the family is listed in the 1790 U.S. Census. The Ford family consisted of Sanbun, wife Hannah, Simeon, daughter Anna. and their newborn brother William, born Feb. 27, 1792.

Simeon signed up in the 5th Regiment in 1808 for an enlist ment of five years. Documents written six years later in March 1814 by U.S. Rep. John W. Taylor (Charlton, Saratoga County) sought Simeon’s honorable dis charge from the Army because he was thought to have deserted.

In the various letters, Taylor tried to set the record straight. He stated that Simeon was taken ill at Fort Columbus (Governors Island in New York Harbor) two or three years into his service and was allowed to return home to recuper ate and visit with friends and family.

It appears that he didn’t return to duty. When war was declared against Britain on June 17, 1812, President James Madison issued an edict that allowed AWOL soldiers to return to service with no penal ties. Simeon took advantage of the pardon and returned to the Army.

During Simeon’s absence, the 5th Regiment, had been dispatched to the southern part of the United States. Upon re-entry to service, Simeon was placed under com mand of Capt. George Nelson, 6th Regiment of U.S. Infantry, a unit training at the Greenbush can tonment, now the site of the Red Mill Elementary School in East Greenbush, Rensselaer County.

Simeon soon was off to war. According to Robert Malcomson in his book “A Very Brilliant Affair” on the battle of Queenston Heights, Ontario, two companies under Capt. Nelson were accompanying artillery commanded by Lt. Col. Fenwick as it headed to Fort Niagara in the first week of August 1812.

The Battle of Queenston Heights occurred on October 13, 1812.

Capt. Nelson’s unit was under com mand of a Maj. Mullany. Fenwick and Mullany’s unit were ordered to Lewiston just before the battle commenced, arriving at the embar kation site just north of Lewiston Heights, on the American side of the Niagara River, with 240 men.

The British targeted the site and poured in shot and shell. Upon see ing the carnage, Lt. Col. Fenwick ordered the men to seek high ground and hide behind the remaining trees. Capt. Nelson turned his unit about to seek shelter when he was killed by cannon fire. An American mortar unit silenced the British artillery position, upon which Fenwick noticed the reduc tion in artillery fire and ordered his men back to the embarkation site to cross the river into Ontario. By noon 600 American regulars were put across the river.

Of the 74 officers and men listed in his unit, Nelson was killed, another officer wounded and 15 were taken as prisoner. The first wave with Fenwick was deci mated. Fenwick suffered wounds to his eye, right elbow and side. Afterward nine musket ball holes were counted in his cloak.

What appeared to be an American victory in the end became a defeat. American troops were pushed back and had to retreat across the river. Poor planning was to blame, for there weren’t enough bateaux on hand

to transport more troops across to the Canadian side of the river.

It is interesting to note that Simeon served with two future famous U.S. Generals, Capt. John E. Wool and Lt. Col. Winfield Scott. Simeon served under and would have seen two early power players of Albany and New York state, Stephen and Solomon Van Rensselaer, who were second cousins. Stephen would later become lieutenant gov ernor of New York and Solomon was adjutant general of the militia 1800-1811 and elected to Congress in 1819 for two terms.

Simeon states in his pension record that he was at the battle of 40 Mile Creek in Ontario on June 8, 1813. The U.S. 6th Regiment was at the battle of Fort George in Ontario, fought two weeks earlier, so I believe he participated in both conflicts.

His brother Amasiah places him at Plattsburgh in March 1814 as well, while early newspaper ads show mail waiting at the post office for Simeon in Plattsburgh. His records note he was discharged in April 1814, yet on Aug. 25, 1814, Capt. Opie published a notice in the Plattsburgh newspaper offer ing a reward for his return as a deserter. The war formally ended Feb. 18, 1815 and in the end, Simeon, with the help of John Taylor, was granted a pension.

Simeon married Hannah Randall in Rensselaer on Feb. 23, 1823. They would have four children: Charlotte (born 1827), Elizabeth (b. 1836), John (b. 1838) and Sanborn (b. 1842). Simeon died Feb. 14, 1859, and is buried in the Ford plot at the Ballston Spa Village Cemetery alongside the other fighting Fords. His wife Hannah died in 1886 in Green Island, Albany County.

Was Simeon Ford a deserter or a hero? He certainly saw his share of carnage and performed his share of soldiering. As a direct descendant my vote is skewed. Two centuries later, I know where to find Simeon Ford, but I’m not sure how to collect the bounty.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Spoken: A Shopping Sanctuary

For more than a decade, I have had the great fun and satisfaction of shopping at Spoken, on Church Street, while it was owned by the indefatigable Pam Worth. I learned to turn to her for advice about what to wear, respect her honesty about what looked good and what didn’t work, and look forward to her exuberance, sense of humor, professionalism, and insights. Also, her friendship, which has meant more to me than the garment guru will ever know. So my heart sank when she called me to say she had sold Spoken - until she told me the sale was made to Tina Powell, the indomitable, personable, hilarious fashionista who had been working at Spoken full time as a sales associate and was ready to take on the challenge. I was immediately thrilled for both of them: Pam, for making the difficult decision to put on the brakes, and Tina, for taking up the torch. How fortunate the women who shop at Spoken are to have this cozy, convenient, creative corner shop just steps off Broadway, and how deeply gratifying it is to know there will be continuity in the style, that special je ne sais quoi, and distinctive, honest, energized dialogue shoppers and staff share. Spoken is an asset to our retail community and Pam and Tina make it happen every day. Bravo, ladies! Wishing you all the happiness and success you deserve. A giant thank you for making Spoken a shopping sanctuary and sustaining that spark during the transition. I can’t wait to add unique Spoken outfits to my wardrobe in 2023.

Mid-November Marks Anniversary Start of Fall 2020, 2021 COVID Spikes in Saratoga County

BALLSTON SPA —

In September, Saratoga County began offering clinics for seniors regarding updated COVID-19 vaccine boosters.

The boosters - called a biva lent COVID-19 vaccine - include components of the original virus strain and the Omicron variant and are designed to provide better protection against the Omicron variant, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

Saratoga County Health Services Commissioner Dr.

Daniel Kuhles recently provided the county’s Health and Human Services Committee with an update regarding the status of the vaccination clinics.

“On the bivalent COVID vaccine initiative, we’ve been focused on our seniors, who can either register online or call our call center,” Kuhles said. “We’ve had clinics almost every day since September.” Most recently, the county staged Moderna Bivalent Booster Clinics at the county Public Safety Building in Ballston Spa, and Pfizer Bivalent Booster Clinics at Galway Town Hall and at Mechanicville Senior Center.

Comparatively speaking about 7.3% of the US popula tion and 8.5% of the population in New York State has received a bivalent booster, Kuhles said. “In Saratoga County, it’s 13.56 % and 35% of seniors. So, while the overall interest across the nation is low, we continue to outperform the nation and the state.”

Appointments are required, and information may be found via the county website at sarato gacounty.ny.org. The county clin ics restrict the bivalent vaccine to seniors. For all others, boosters offered at pharmacies and other locations may be found via the CDC (search at: vaccines.gov, or call 1-,./ 800-232-02330).

New Yorkers ages 5 and older are eligible for a Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent booster dose and New Yorkers ages 6 and older are

Saratoga Springs Releases 3rd Quarter Report

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Sales tax received by, and Hotel Occupancy tax paid to Saratoga Springs are both anticipated to exceed amounts expected in the 2022 revised budget, Finance Commissioner Minita Sanghvi said Nov. 15 during her Third Quarter Financial Report submit tal to the City Council.

The amount received in sales tax as of Sept. 30 was $9,110,252.30, an 11% increase compared to Sept. 30, 2021. It is expected the city will exceed the 2022 revised budget of

$14.9 million.

As of Sept. 30, the city had received $201,300.89 in hotel occupancy tax. Collections are rebounding from 2021 and have about doubled in 2022 when compared to the first two install ments of 2021, Sanghvi said. The city expects to exceed the 2022 revised budget of $425,000.

The report specifies for the quarter ended Sept. 30.

Property taxes in the General Fund are recognized as reve nue for the full amount levied at

the time the tax roll is posted to the general ledger and an adjust ment made at year end to defer to future years the amount not collected. As of Sept. 30, 87% - or $14,824,510.48 had been collected, similar to the 87% col lected last year at this time.

Additional items:

• VLT aid in the amount of $2,325,592 for 2022 was received on June 17. The City’s revised budget for 2022 is $2,325,592.

• State Aid Revenue sharing is distributed in two installments, September and December, with the largest share received in December. The September payment was $227,128. The city expects to meet the revised budget of $1,649,701.

• Mortgage Tax is paid semi annually in May and November.

Mortgage tax receipts increased approximately 12% when com pared to Sept. 30, 2021. As of Sept. 30, 2022, $1,135,241.98 was received. Taking into consideration the property tax revenue recogni tion issues, approximately 69% of revenues were actually received as of this date - a decrease from 2021 when 77% of revenues were received. This decrease is partly a timing issue of when grant rev enues are received, the use of fund balance in the 2022 adopted bud get, and also because in 2021 the city received 2020 state aid that had been held back in 2020, according to the Finance Department.

• The city closed on a General Obligation Bond on June 23, 2022 to finance various 2022 capital projects for $17,137,299.

Foods for Good Health at the Farmers’ Market

Chicken Noodle Soup

YIELDS:

The best way to stay healthy during cold and flu season is to take preventative steps before you feel that first sniffle. If you become sick, resting, staying hydrated, and getting proper nutrition are some of the most important things you can do to feel better and recover faster.

Many locally grown and sourced foods are packed with immune-boosting nutrients to keep your body strong, healthy, and ready to fight infections.

Vitamin C is primarily associated with a strengthened immune system and may help to reduce cold and flu symptoms. Brussels sprouts, potatoes, tomatoes, and fresh herbs like parsley and thyme are high in vitamin C and currently available from local farms.

Pasture-raised chicken is available at the farmers’ market and can be boiled down to make nutrientdense broth. Bone broth/stock is rich in minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids and has many health benefits. To get started, place 1 gallon of water, 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 2-4 pounds of bones and meat, and salt and pepper in a large pot. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 12-24 hours. The longer it cooks, the better the broth will taste and the more nutritious it will be.

Freshly harvested leafy greens like spinach and kale can also help boost your immune system as they contain vitamins E and C. A green smoothie or a raw salad can offer a daily dose of these essential, healthbuilding vitamins.

Whether you’re looking to alleviate a cough or boost your immune system, honey is an excellent food to consume on its own or in a cup of tea. Honey is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Bee products such as propolis and bee pollen are high in zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins.

Garlic has been used in alternative medicine for centuries. Scientists have found that plant compounds in garlic are immune-supportive and anti-inflammatory even when consumed raw in small doses.

Turmeric, a spice well known as an ingredient in curry, contains a chemical called curcumin, which might reduce swelling. Tumeric is also regarded for its antioxidant and antiviral properties. It’s also grown locally!

While no food alone can cure sickness, eating the right foods may help support your immune system and relieve certain symptoms.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is open on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Wilton Mall Food Court. Find us online at www. saratogafarmersmarket.org, where you can sign up for our weekly newsletter, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @SaratogaFarmersMarket.

• 2 tablespoons butter* or olive oil

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 large onion*, chopped

• 2 large carrots*, chopped

• 2 stalks celery*, chopped

• 4 cloves garlic*, minced

• 2 bay leaves

• 3 sprigs fresh thyme* or use 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

• 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs* or breast*

• 8 cups low sodium chicken stock or broth or use homemade stock

• 5 ounces egg noodles (or pasta of choice)

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• 1/4 cup fresh parsley*, finely chopped

• Water or more stock, as needed

1. Warm oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onions, carrots, and celery. Cook, stirring every few minutes, until the vegetables begin to soften; 5 to 6 minutes.

2. Stir in the garlic, bay leaves, and thyme. Cook while stirring the garlic around the pan for about 1 minute.

3. Pour in the chicken stock and bring to a low simmer. Taste the soup, then adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper. Depending on the stock used, you might need to add 1 or more teaspoons of salt.

4. Submerge the chicken thighs into the soup so that the broth covers them. Bring the soup back to a low simmer, then partially cover the pot with a lid and cook, stirring a few times, until the chicken thighs are cooked through, about 20 minutes.

5. If, during this time, the broth seems low, add a splash more stock or a bit of water. Turn the heat to medium-low.

6. Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate. Stir the noodles into the soup and cook until done, 6 to 10 minutes, depending on the type of noodles used.

7. While the noodles cook, shred the chicken into strips or dice it into cubes. Slide the chicken back into the pot and taste the soup once more for seasoning. Adjust with more salt and pepper as needed. Stir in the parsley and serve.

“HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU, Kid”

Hello my Foodie Friends!

We hope everyone is getting ready for Thanksgiving. The holiday season is a great time to reminisce and bring up the stories that are told time and time again. Many family traditions have to do with holidays and holiday food and the stories that soon become part of

While we sat around the kitchen table, my wife Paula brought up a story about our time together before having children. That is when our one baby was our dog Bogie. He was named after Humphrey Bogart and he loved to roam between our house and our neighbors next door. This was before invisible fences, and we didn’t have the money for a regular fence. Bogie was a German Shepherd/Black Lab mix puppy when we rescued him. His color was pure black, and he grew very fast to 100 lbs. of muscle. He was the happiest dog in the world and loved by both our family and our friends next door, Ron and Deedy, whose children were now grown. Bogie could make anyone feel like they were his favorite person in the world. He would go over to visit Ron and Deedy every day. They were passionate foodies and were always cooking something fabulous. Bogie would wander over to their house and always came back carrying leftovers which were usually a big steak or ham bone. They loved him as much as we did. Bogie would, however, test your love from time to time by taking food that wasn’t offered to him. There was the Halloween party that stopped dead in its tracks as all of our guests watched in amazement as Bogie took an entire pizza down the hallway and quickly devoured it. He never stole food from Ron and Deedy until one day when his thievery reached legendary status on Thanksgiving 1989. There was a knock on our door, and it was Ron. He had his head down and in a sad voice he said, “John, Bogie stole two of the mincemeat pies I had baked for Thanksgiving.” I responded to Ron with a mixture of denial and embarrassment; “are you sure, how do you know”? Ron said he put his pie on the roof of his brand new 1989 Mercury

Marquis, which had three miles on it, in the garage to cool. When he opened the garage door to go out, he forgot to close it. When he came back, there were no pies. However, there were paw prints on the hood of his beloved Marquis. Those prints then headed in the direction of our house. Ron and I then found the empty, perfectly cleaned, pie tins. I apologized and offered to pay for the pies, but Ron laughed and told me not to worry. He said he would have to think of a new place to cool his pies and remember to close the door next time. Although it has been many years since this happened and Ron has passed away, we can still hear Ron’s voice as he would always tell this story like it happened yesterday.

Wondering what Bogie did that infamous day after eating the pies and where did we find the dog after his caper? He was curled up by Paula’s legs in the kitchen sleeping it off. I think this was “the start of a beautiful friendship.”

At Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store, we carry everything you need to make your favorite pie or dessert this season, including cooling racks (versus the roof of a Mercury Marquis), pie chains, pie plates, and all of your baking cool tools. Keep your pies safe! Enjoy the holiday season baking and making forever interesting memories. Stop by and shop for your traditional holiday season culinary needs at 33 Railroad Place in Saratoga Springs. When you get a moment, raise a glass and proclaim: “Here’s Looking at you Bogie!” Remember my Foodie Friends: “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

Traditional Mincemeat Pie

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE FILLING

• 2 cups finely chopped beef suet

• ¾ cup dried currants

• ¾ cup finely chopped rump steak (about 3 oz.)

• ½ cup raisins

• ½ cup packed dark brown sugar

• 2 Tbsp. brandy

• 1½ tsp. chopped candied citron peel

• 1½ tsp. chopped candied lemon peel

• 1½ tsp. chopped candied orange peel

• 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice, plus grated zest of ½ lemon

INSTRUCTIONS

MAKE THE FILLING

• In a medium bowl, combine the beef suet, currants, rump steak, raisins, brown sugar, brandy, candied citrus peels, lemon juice and zest, nutmeg, and apples. Mix well.

• Transfer the mixture to a 1-quart jar. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 days and up to 2 weeks.

MAKE THE CRUST

• In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Using a dough blender, two forks, or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour mixture, forming pea-size crumbles. Add the water; work the dough until smooth but with visible flecks of butter.

• Divide the dough in half and flatten into disks. Wrap the disks in plastic; refrigerate for at least 1 hour before using.

• When ready to bake, remove one of the disks of dough to a lightly floured work surface, and let it rest at room temperature for about 5

• ¼ tsp. grated nutmeg

• 1½ Granny Smith apples, cored and finely chopped

FOR THE CRUST

• 2¼ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

• 1 Tbsp. granulated sugar

• 1 tsp. kosher salt

• 12 Tbsp. cold unsalted butter, cubed

• 6 Tbsp. ice-cold water

• 1 large egg, lightly beaten

minutes, or until still chilled but pliable. Using a lightly floured rolling pin, roll out the disk into a ⅛- inch-thick round, rotating often and flouring the surface more as needed to prevent sticking.

• Carefully transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie plate, pressing gently against the sides and bottom to fit. Roll out the remaining disk of dough into a ⅛-inch-thick round using the same method. Transfer the filling to the pie shell, brush the edges with water, and cover the pie with the top crust. Trim excess, leaving a 1-inch overhang. Fold the top edge over the bottom crust to seal, and crimp as desired. Cut a few steam vents in the top crust, then refrigerate the pie for 1 hour.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F. Brush the pie with egg wash, then bake until golden, about 1 hour. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely.

Writing the Right Word

Accuracy in word choice is a key to effective communication. In your daily writing and speaking, try to make sure you use the right word in the right place with the right spelling. By doing so, its effect will affect your communication in a positive way. This quick weekly tip will help you filter the confusion in some of our daily word choices.

This Week: Benevolence, Malevolence

Benevolence means being inclined to do charitable acts. His benevolence to the homeless was well known.

Malevolence means wishing harm to others. The malevolence of a few destroyed his political aspirations.

Dave Dowling is the author of The Wrong Word Dictionary and The Dictionary of Worthless Words. Both books are available from many book retailers, and signed copies can be obtained by contacting Dave at dave.dowling65@gmail.com

Welcome to Saratoga Bride – the newsprint edition!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding - you have come to the right place!

I’ve been doing Saratoga Bride for about 15 years now (where does the time go?!) and I’ve seen how NOTHING prevents LOVE from blossoming in this town!

Two feet of snow during a Bridal Expo – people still come out! – a global pandemic – people just prioritize and reschedule!

I know why people get married here – I’ve been reading their stories for years, but I thought I’d call on DISCOVER SARATOGA for some real numbers to back up my belief that we’re a world-class four-season wedding destination.

This is what I found out:

• 80% of the weddings they work with are destination weddings – meaning that most of the guests and/or the couple is travelling from out of town and most of the guests will be needing overnight hotel accommodations. The primary request that we get from couples are for room blocks where at least 50% are travelling from out of town.

• People are booking weddings further out now as there is both the newly engaged couple, as well as people who rescheduled their weddings from COVID. So... Book Early!

• In 2022, there will be an estimated 2.5 million weddings – which is the most in US history since 1984

• $33k is the average wedding cost in the US, and 50% is spent on the venue

Saratoga Bride is full of inspiration, whether you’re searching Saratoga Bride.com for ideas, reading through Real Brides and stories online, or checking out these beautiful fall brides – we have what you’re looking for to plan your wedding in the Adirondack / Saratoga / Capital Region!

Happy Planning!

Real Bride

- OUR STORY -

Chris and I first met at Bentley University in 2011 but it wasn't until we attended the same Mumford and Sons concert at SPAC in June 2016 that we officially got together. At the time, I was living in Boston, and he was living in NYC, so we struggled through a long-distance relationship for some time before I packed up and moved to Brooklyn. We moved in together and I quickly convinced him to let me get a dog (Hudson!). After three years of dating Chris proposed in Congress Park by having Hudson wear a "Will you marry Dad?" charm on his leash. We celebrated the rest of the summer with family and friends and even had (almost!) our entire bridal party up to my parents’ house for a celebratory weekend at the track on Labor Day Weekend 2019! Soon after that, of course, the world changed, as did our plans for a September 6, 2020 wedding at the Canfield Casino, as well as our living situation. We left our one bedroom in Brooklyn for my parents’ house in Ballston Lake and bought property to build on in Ballston Spa. Building a house while replanning a wedding (occasionally!) caused some stress, but the end result was perfect. We wanted it to have a destination wedding feel in Saratoga, with events all three days of Labor Day Weekend – a welcome party at SingleCut, rehearsal dinner at Thirsty Owl, after party at Nashville, and the day after brunch at Longfellows. We couldn't have imagined a more beautiful, historic venue than the Canfield Casino and the vendors we were able to work with were so incredibly kind and supportive throughout the entire process, all the way through to the day of. We owe a lot to our families and friends for all the hugs, help, and (at times!) manual labor. We felt so loved and celebrated and started our marriage in such a beautiful way.

SPECIAL TOUCHES...

• Welcome party at SingleCut in Clifton Park

• Rehearsal dinner at Thirsty Owl, after party at Nashville Saratoga

• Day after brunch at Longfellows Restaurant

• It's so hard to narrow this down since it all seemed special to us! We tried to make the wedding a mix of Saratoga and Southernthemed with mint juleps prepared as a seating chart, and stationery that depicted the city of Saratoga. We are also very close with our families and made sure our grandparents played a role in our big day. I wore pieces of both of my Grandma's wedding dresses on me, and Chris wore his grandfather's photo pinned to his suit. We also had his grandma do a reading during our ceremony, which was officiated by my cousin. My best friend and her sisters played our ceremony music on violins as well, which was so emotional and amazing.

ADVICE TO PASS ALONG...

Stick to what you love and don’t lean into a trend that doesn’t suit you!

Also, identify the things that are most important to you as a couple and prioritize those. For us that was photography and food. Weddings are a lot of money and work, and you can’t do it all!

Madison & Jacob

- OUR STORY -

Jake and I met on the first day of college orientation at Elmira college in September of 2015. We were best friends from the start. Others came and went, but he was my number one. After we both became newly single in the fall of 2016, we began to flirt a little. In the spring of 2017, I finally said to him “are you going to date me or what?” The next day he took me on our first date to Pietro’s in Elmira, NY and the rest is history! We got engaged wine tasting with all our friends and family at our favorite spot in fall of 2018. We graduated college in spring 2019 and moved to the Capital Region. When we were wedding planning in 2020, it only felt right to get married in the fall, it was OUR season after all! After we saw The Hayloft on the Arch, we knew it was our venue. The next summer, Jake and my mom came wedding dress shopping with me at Lily Saratoga, (we are not traditional at all!) They cried when I put the first dress on, as I kept trying, nothing seemed to compare! We have been married almost a year now and just bought our first home together in the Capital Region!

ADVICE TO PASS ALONG...

• Lastly, enjoy dinner by yourselves! It was a great way to take the day in and be together.

Megan & Nicholas

Real Bride

- OUR STORY -

Nick and I first met at college orientation at Hofstra University on Long Island where we were both studying to be Physician Assistants. After three years of college where we shared classes and similar social circles, we both started our Master’s degree program in our senior year. We began studying together and he quickly became one of my best friends. Over packed pints of Stewart’s ice cream that Nick brought back from his hometown, Amsterdam, and many hours of studying, our friendship turned into a relationship.

After three and a half years of dating, Nick and I were on a camping trip at my favorite place, Montauk, NY, in August of 2019 when he asked me to marry him on the beach at sunset. It was the most thoughtful and beautiful proposal!

Working full time as PAs, we both decided on a long engagement with plenty of time to plan a wedding. We found our perfect date, 10/10/21, at the perfect venue, Franklin Plaza Ballroom in Troy, NY. We got married over Columbus Day weekend, so we really made it an event. We had a welcome party the night before, an after party at the wedding venue and a brunch the morning after for our guests. Our wedding day was truly magical, and we are so thankful to our vendors, friends and family members for truly making this such a wonderful experience in such a trying time.

In Remembrance of David Bruce Cassidy

Nacre Dance Group to Stage Christmas Oratorio at UPH, Nutcracker at The Egg

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Nacre Dance Group presents two dance classics this holiday season that unites dancers from various Capital Region dance studios with visiting artists.

Dance festivities begin at the Universal Preservation Hall on Sunday, Dec. 11 - at 4 and 7 p.m. - with Christmas Oratorio. Nacre Dance Group’s production is based on modern dance pioneer Charles Weidman’s later version of “Christmas Oratorio,” which opened in 1961 to wide critical acclaim and has remained a much-loved classic work of modern dance.

Weidman’s masterful cho reography combined with Bach’s passionate music brings a moving portrayal of the Nativity this holi day season.

The ensemble’s Nutcracker will also be performed at The Egg in Albany at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17.

David,

I remember you for the man you were. Simple yet elegant. Years ago, you reached out to me as I welcomed you into my life. It took two soulmates to find each other in a crazy world and we did. You will forever and always remain my best friend and lover. My funny Valentine.

Memories etched in my mind forever and missing you more than ever.

NY Animal Foundation Named for David Cassidy Rescues Former Racehorse

NEW YORK/SARATOGA

SPRINGS — I Think I Love You Animal Foundation, Inc. - a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in New York created in memory of David Cassidy – was contacted through their Facebook page that former racehorse Dixieland Squall was on her way to a kill pen in a matter of days.

The 19-year-old thorough bred had a long career that included 12 starts with 1 first place finish, 1 second place finish and 2 finishes in third place. The mare was trained by I Think I Love You Animal Foundation board mem ber Gary Contessa and bred, and once co-owned, by late actor and singer David Cassidy for whom the I Think I Love You Animal Foundation was founded.

Once made aware of the

situation, the Foundation worked quickly and on Nov. 11 purchased the mare.

Following the Foundation’s rescue, horseman Rick Schosberg provided transportation to South Haven Stables in Cleveland, Tennessee where Dixieland Squall is now safe and will quarantine for 30 days. The Foundation’s next step will be to find her a forever home.

“The Foundation’s mission is to save horses and other animals from unknown futures. With horses like Dixieland Squall and others we have stepped in to help, we are doing just that,” said horse trainer and Foundation board member Gary Contessa.

“This is a very important rescue for our Foundation as it involves a horse bred and once co-owned by David Cassidy

himself. How could we not step in and allow the horse to live out her natural life in honor of the person we founded the Foundation for? said Barb Collentine, President of I Think I Love You Animal Foundation. “David Cassidy was an advocate for appropriate thor oughbred aftercare. We were all thrilled to continue to honor his legacy of hard work with horses both on and off the track.”

I Think I Love You Animal Foundation was created in mem ory of the late actor and singer David Cassidy, and provides financial support to animals in need of sanctuary or medical attention, especially retired thor oughbred racehorses who require rescue from emergent situations.

Turkey Trot Returns for 21st Year On Thanksgiving

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Christopher Dailey Foundation Turkey Trot returns this Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, for the 21st annual running of the 5K.

The 5K will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, with the run starting on Broadway near the Saratoga Springs City Hall. Registration for the event costs $29, and online registration must be completed by Nov. 22.

Participants can still register in person from 4 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 23 at the Saratoga Hilton Hotel, where the Dailey Foundation will be holding packet pick-up for runners. Packet pick-up will also run from 6 to 8 a.m. on the day of the race. Day-of registration is not available for the 5K.

The first Turkey Trot was held in 2002, in memory of eight-yearold Christopher Dailey, who passed away in 2001. Laura Rose Dailey, a board member of the Dailey Foundation and Christopher’s sis ter, said the Foundation held its first fundraiser in May 2002, a golf tournament, before starting the Turkey Trot that fall.

The initial Turkey Trot took place in the Dailey’s neighbor hood, and saw roughly 300 people in attendance, Dailey said. Every year since, the Trot has been held in downtown Saratoga, with this year’s route beginning on Broadway, looping through the Skidmore College campus, and finishing on North Broadway.

Dailey said roughly 3,000 to 4,000 people attend the Turkey Trot each year, which acts as a fun draiser for the Christopher Dailey Foundation, using the funds to help the Saratoga community.

“Our original goal and mis sion for the first few years of the foundation was to build a gym at Gavin Park, where he spent a lot of time, I spent a lot of time,” said Dailey. “It was around the corner from where we lived.”

The Christopher Dailey Memorial Youth Gymnasium opened at Gavin Park in 2006, and in the years since, the Foundation has used fundraising efforts to give even more back to the community.

“In the past, I’d say five or six years, we’ve transitioned to more just basic economic needs,” Dailey said. “My mom works really closely with the Franklin Community Center for clothes and jackets, shoes. We work really closely with sending kids home with food for the weekend.”

The Turkey Trot has grown so much that people “from all over the country” will show up on Thanksgiving morning by way of local family members, Dailey said.

“A ton of people whose fam ilies come from out of town will do the race, so we’ll have people from all over the country that do it, which also feels pretty cool,” said Dailey.

“Now, in the past couple years, we’ve been getting messages like, ‘I was at this vintage store in North Carolina and I saw a Christopher Dailey Turkey Trot shirt.’ That’s also been kind of cool, to see the way that those float around.”

Dailey said that she, along with her brother Brendan, are pre paring to take over control of the Christopher Dailey Foundation’s board as their parents, Mark and Maria, transition out of the roles.

“My brother and I are going to start kind of taking it over,” said Dailey. “Him and I joined the board in January of last year, and we are adding a few board mem bers of our own, with the inten tion of, in 2024, just being him and I and our board members.”

And Dailey noted that the opportunity to help the com munity while remembering Christopher is a special one.

“For me, Chris was 8 when he died and I was 12. To still be able to have everyone remember him every year, I just think it’s so rad,” said Dailey. “And to do it in the name of giving back to the Saratoga community, I just feel really lucky and blessed for that.”
