SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City Council will begin 2020 much as it will conclude 2019, with four of five current members returning for renewed twoyear terms following this week’s citywide election with a majority of incumbents being re-elected to their respective seats.

Democrat city Mayor Meg Kelly (D, WF, I) bested Republican challenger Timothy Holmes by a greater than 2-to-1 margin, scoring the night’s largest margin of victory in local elections.

A. That’s a difficult question. I’ve lived all over the place.

A. I love reading. I’ve been here about four weeks and already I probably bought 10 books. I also love going to Caffe Lena for music – that’s great – and it’s nice to have Bow Tie cinema right here, as well as Home Made Theater in the park – I love that.

Q. How did you find your way to Saratoga?

A. My parents are here. I’ve been in Saratoga on-and-off for about 10 years.

Q. What brought you to China?

A. School. I studied Eastern Asian religious studies.

New Events at the Wilton Preserve

WILTON — Last week, the Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park released its event schedule for the remainder of 2019, as well as the timing for the 2020 Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe event.

There are eight events listed for the remaining two months of the year, with some repeating on a monthly cycle, although Tori Herkalo, Education Coordinator and Environmental Educator for the Preserve, said that more events could be added in the future, such as the transit of Mercury next week on Nov. 11.

The earliest listed event took place this past Monday, Nov. 4. It was a Wellness Walk, one of the repeating events, which took place on the Opdahl Trailhead. The Walks focus on gentle exercise for the participants.

Herkalo said that sometimes the walks have people, other times they do not, and that on average there are around seven to eight participants. For the winter walks, she said that the Preserve provides snowshoes.

The other main repeating event at the Preserve are Preschool Nature Hours, which take place once per month on a

Monday at 10:30 a.m. Herkalo said that the walks teach the children about nature and include a healthy snack, like apple slices. The next Preschool Nature Hour is set for Nov. 25, and the following for Dec. 9.

Additionally, there are Autumn Discovery Hikes this weekend, on Sunday, Nov. 10, at Camp Saratoga North. The nature walk will teach about how trees and animals adapt to the winter season, and will cover approximately a mile of terrain over the course of an hour and a half.

Herkalo said that she would be leading the Discovery walk, and that it is an educational walk geared towards families, but that seniors like to come as well and that the program is adaptable to the audience.

Registration for the event is required, and participants will meet at the trailhead kiosk by Parking Lot #1. The event will not happen if there is rain.

During November, there is also an Eagle Scout Project in Camp Saratoga on the weekends of Nov. 16 and Nov. 23. According to Herkalo, Boy Scout Trevor Borden’s Eagle Project is to build a shed to house winter grooming equipment.

Anyone interested in volunteering can contact the Preserve Office for more information.

During December, there are two events currently listed. First is an ornament making workshop on Saturday, Dec. 7, where people will be able to make ornaments out of natural materials sourced from the Preserve, such as pinecones.

Second, the Preserve will be holding its annual meeting, holiday reception and photography show on Monday, Dec. 16, with the Meeting starting at 6 p.m. and going for an hour and the reception and photography show starting afterward and running for an hour and a half.

The final event currently listed is the Annual Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe event on Saturday, Jan 11, starting at 6 p.m., where two-and-a-half miles of trails are lit with candles and bonfires, allowing participants to walk the Preserve at night. According to Herkalo, they are announcing Moonlight Walk so early due to it being the single most popular event of the year for the Preserve.

Due to the sheer popularity of the event, the Preserve will be issuing free tickets to participate, with donors to the Preserve

getting first choice on Jan 2, and the public gaining access on Jan 6.

Those interested in joining the Preserve or hearing about the details of its operation can go to a Volunteer Meeting on Monday, Nov. 18. According to Herkalo, the meeting includes both what the workers need to get done at

the Preserve and a presentation for entertainment, such as when one of the Preserve’s interns, a Skidmore College student, presented their findings from a trip to New Zealand.

COURT Zachary M. Ives, 34, of Milton, was sentenced Nov. 1 to 1-3 years in state prison, after pleading to unlawful surveillance in the second-degree, a felony.

William B. Shafer, 32, of Ballston Lake, was sentenced Oct. 31 to 3 years in state prison, after pleading to attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony, in Wilton.

POLICE Ricky Farmer, 61, of Gansevoort, was charged Nov. 2 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and two driving violations.

Leonard Whitfield, 34, of Glenmont, was charged Nov. 2 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and speeding.

John Bonner, 31, of East Quoque, was charged Nov. 2 in Saratoga Springs with felony grand larceny, felony assault with intent to cause injury to officer, and the misdemeanors: obstruct governmental administration, and criminal mischief. The location of alleged incident was Saratoga Casino and Raceway driveway.

Dashawn St. Andrews, 26, of Schenectady, was charged Nov. 3 in Saratoga Springs with resisting arrest, unlawful possession of marijuana, and harassment.

Brandon H. Welfinger, 23, of Malta, was charged Nov. 3 with violating state Corrections Law by having an unregistered account as a sex offender, a felony.

James Reynolds, 55, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Nov. 3 with misdemeanor DWI, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, on Crescent Avenue.

Tara McCall, 32, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Oct. 28 with criminal possession of a weapon in the third-degree/ previous conviction – felony, menacing in the seconddegree – a misdemeanor, and criminal mischief in the thirddegree, regarding an alleged incident on Lincoln Avenue.

Edward Dominy, 49, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Nov. 4 with criminal contempt, and aggravated family offense/ more than 1 offense within 5 years, a felony.

Saratoga Springs Police issued an advisory Oct. 31 alerting residents that five daytime residential burglaries had taken place between 9 a.m.

– 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30. In some cases, entry was forced into the home, according to police. The area where incidents took place are: Eastman Lane, Waterbury Street, Newark Street, outer Grand Avenue and Lawrence Street. Anyone with information regarding the incidents are asked to notify police by calling 518584-1800, or 518-584-TIPS to remain anonymous.

Carlos Sol-Encarnacion, 24, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Oct. 29 with second degree assault – a felony, and the misdemeanors: criminal possession of a weapon, and menacing.

Calvin O’Connell, 20, of Ballston, was charged Oct. 28 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and following too closely.

Nicholas Hanks, 32, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Oct. 29 with criminal mischief in the fourth-degree, on East Avenue.

James Duffy, 34, of Johnstown, and Georgios N. Kakavelos, 51, of Ballston Spa, were each charged Oct. 31 with murder in the second-degree, and concealment of a human corpse, in connection with the death of a 22-year-old woman whose body was discovered in Malta.

Food Drive Success SARATOGA SPRINGS ­ — St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s first annual community-wide food drive took place during October and had over 370 donors give 3,720 pounds of food to support those in need.

The project was a part of the St. Paul’s Red-Letter Challenge, which is a church-wide event to get church members to grow in faith and show love and compassion towards others.

In total, along with the donations from the Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs, the food will be able to provide around 3,100 meals.

Saratoga Hospital Nurse Named Practitioner of the Year SARATOGA SPRINGS ­ — Janice Ceccucci, a family nurse practitioner with Saratoga Hospital, earned New York state’s 2019 Nurse Practitioner of the Year award for her skill, sensitivity and determination to improve service with regards to sexual assault forensic exams.

Ceccucci helped establish and co-directs the hospital’s Advanced Practice Providers Fellowship Program to educate and mentor other nurse practitioners and physicians assistants.

As Americans reflect on the service of military men and women this Veterans Day, some may not realize that there are fellow residents with those who serve in the U.S. Navy Reserve CAPT. MARY ETTA NOLAN Capt. Mary Etta Nolan, a resident of Greenfield Center, supports and defends freedom around the world, as a nurse leader.

In addition to serving in the Navy Reserve, Nolan has worked at Saratoga Surgery Center as a preoperative nurse in the operating room for over ten years. She balances her military duties with her civilian ones by relying on her support system, such as her husband.

PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS EVELYN MCFARREN Petty Officer 2nd Class Evelyn Mcfarren, a resident of South Glens Falls, supports and defends freedom around the world, as a Navy hospital corpsman, who is responsible for being the lead petty officer of her medical unit as well as the unit career counselor.

In addition to serving in the Navy Reserves, Mcfarren has worked as an operating room nurse for two years.

“My husband is very supportive of my Navy career and he makes it easy to balance my life and the Navy,” said Nolan.

“I balance my civilian life with my Navy reserve service through the support of my dedicated friends, family and co-workers,” said Mcfarren.

As a Navy reservist, Nolan serves with Operational Health Support Unit Portsmouth and is responsible for supporting the reserve center with physical exams and emergencies.

As a Navy reservist, Mcfarren serves with Operational Health Support Unit Portsmouth, VA, responsible for training junior corpsman to provide medical services like immunizations, blood draws, physical and dental exams and other medical services.

Nolan is playing an important part in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Nolan is most proud of starting the Cardiac Surgery Program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and training the corpsman on how to scrub open-heart procedures.

“I received my first Navy Commendation Medal for charge nurse and preoperative duties in the Navy Reserve Same Day Surgery Program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth,” said Nolan.

Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Mcfarren is most proud of the opportunity to mentor junior corpsman, serving overseas in Balad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and being her unit's leading petty officer.

“I have had obstacles personally to overcome and I am proud that I have worked hard to overcome some adversity in life,” said Mcfarren. “I am honored to support, train and educate new members in their Navy career and advancement.”

Giving Thanks to Our Veterans

W

e’ve turned back the clock, the leaves have fallen, and the first snowflakes are hitting the ground…which means Thanksgiving is just around the corner. But before we give thanks for our personal blessings, it is time to give thanks to our veterans.

Veteran’s Day, which takes place on Monday November 11, evolved from Armistice Day, which was proclaimed in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson. Not to be confused with Memorial Day, which is for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, Veterans Day is intended to thank all those who honorably served in the military in both war time and peace time.

These are the brave men and women who serve our country nobly, enduring hardships many of us can’t imagine. From the front lines of Ramadi Iraq, to Cyber Command in Fort Meade MD, this well-oiled machine keeps the bad guys at bay so we can sleep soundly at night. Unfortunately, a great many of our veterans struggle to find jobs, housing or health care.

While most of us will never step on a battlefield or command an M1 Abrams tank, we can certainly take the time to thank those who do, and perhaps do something extra to make their life a little easier.

Don’t know a veteran to thank? I bet you do.

Currently there are approximately 18.2 million veterans living in the United States, which accounts for 7.6% of the population. So, chances are you interact with veterans on a regular basis. While the primary focus of Veterans Day is on the veterans, let us not forget about their families. Military spouses and their children endure a lifestyle that comes with its own unique challenges and sleepless nights. Military families often put their personal aspirations on hold so their service member can fulfill the oath they made to defend this great nation and our way of life.

It is with a great deal of appreciation and debt, that the staff at Saratoga TODAY offers a true heartfelt THANK YOU to all the veterans, in all the branches, as well as their families. Thank you for your sacrifice, your bravery, and the example you set for us all.

Veterans Need Veterans to Help Veterans “It’s one of my favorite sayings,” Sid Gordon tells me as we sit across from each other in a corner booth at Denny’s. He’s agreed to meet me with his wife, Helen, to chat over a cup of coffee.

“Veterans need veterans to help veterans,” he nods his head up and down, spreads his arms wide open, winking at me. “The quote’s mine and it takes on more meaning every time I say it,” I watch Sid pat his wife’s hand in a comforting gesture as her eyes begin to water with emotion.

I couldn’t agree more.

I’m always overwhelmed with gratefulness – like so many other Americans – when I think of all the sacrifices soldiers are willing to give, to help keep us free.

“Every single soldier is owed a debt. It doesn’t matter if

they fight on the front lines, take care of the wounded at military hospitals, if they clean laundry, or cook and serve our meals in the mess halls,” This giant of a man tells me. “We’re all links in the chain – if one part isn’t working, the rest of the command isn’t functioning at 100%.”

This chapter of DAV serves Saratoga, Warren, and Washington counties, with a clear mission – to help every veteran in need, pointing them in the right direction, toward services available to them and their families.

Gordon was a member of the military police in Osaka, Japan. A soldier of the 17th Army 25th Mechanized Cavalry Room Special Forces, Sid worked on creating maps along the coastline of Shikoku Island, about 20-30 miles off Japan’s mainland.

He also served post-atomic bomb Hiroshima from 1946-1948.

“When Emperor Hirohito came out of seclusion, I was tasked with guarding him,” Sid sighs heavily.

Helen places her hand on his arm and begins to weep. After a moment, she looks me in the eye, wiping her own with a tissue. “I’m so proud of this man.”

“While it’s true that WWII was over, there remained many areas where the Japanese didn’t want to surrender,” he says in a solemn voice. “They were ready to die – it didn’t matter that the war had ended. These were Kamikaze pilots – part of the Japanese Special Attacks Unit of military aviators trained to initiate suicide attacks, usually aimed at Allied naval ships.” continues to next page...

In Florida and Vermont, Gordon worked delivering a military magazine, Bivouac Veteran’s News, to veteran homes and other organizations. “Seeing the happy smiles each time I delivered a new issue made me so happy. If I can help a vet and they thank me, I feel so whole inside – it’s as if they’re my ‘charging plate,’ they keep me going.”

Sid was an ‘assistant scoutmaster’ during the early 50s. He remembers two young men that were under his watch of Troop 50. Michael Dugan – who later became General of the US

Airforce, and Larry Gordon, his nephew – who served 32 years as County Planner for Saratoga.

When asked what he did as assistant scoutmaster, Sid laughs.

“Well, I hollered at the guys, taught them procedures, how to tie a knot, tried to guide them in the right direction – so they’d live a good life, be a great person.”

In 1999 he covered the Travers Day races for a paper in Maryland.

Although he had a good camera, it didn’t have the long, heavy lens that other photographers were carrying around, which worked in his favor.

Lemon-Drop Kid won the Travers that day. “I got the photo – just reached up over everyone’s head, pointed and caught the moment,” he says, grinning at the memory.

The couple has six children and ten grandkids. They hold up a letter one of their grandchildren wrote. “It’s important for the younger generations to learn things that have been tossed by the wayside.”

“This is from Zion, our tenyear-old grandson,” Helen tells me. “He’s practicing cursive writing because his grandfather believes it’s important.”

And that’s the thing – military heroes are people just like you and me. They have hopes and dreams, just like the rest of us. They meet a girl, date a guy, fall in love, get married. They do ordinary, everyday things.

It’s their love of country – their willingness to do whatever it takes to keep our country free – that makes them extraordinary.

The day after I met with Sid and Helen, he phoned. He was very excited. I stood by the fax machine and then read a letter he’d just received. It was from the New York State Senate – specifically

Senator Daphne V. Jordan, 43rd Senate District.

In a legislative proclamation, she lists his commitment and dedication, his exemplary contributions to the community, noting his years of service, exposure to the nuclear fallout and damage to his eardrum. The senator speaks to his duties as Chaplain, how he embodies the spirit of the DAV’s mission to empower veterans to live high-quality lives with respect and dignity.

The proclamation states she is ‘justly proud to honor Sid Gordon.’

SARATOGA ­SPRINGS — The Veterans & Community Housing Coalition (VCHC) recently hosted its Fourth Annual Veterans Ball at the Hall of Springs on Sunday, November 3. Over 400 attendees came in support of VCHC’s mission to serve local Veterans and their families with affordable housing and support services while they transition to independent living.

The total raised at the Fourth Annual Veterans Ball was $60,000.

The evening’s highlights included Honorary Chair Ray O’Conor, LaSalle Institute’s JROTC Cadets, live music by The Joey Thomas Big Band, photo booth provided by Chuck Mossey Photography, chocolate fountain provided by We Do Fondue, décor provided by Fine Affairs, elaborate food stations and a fabulous silent auction.

A memorable highlight of the evening was a special tribute to area WWII Veterans who were each ceremoniously honored and presented with quilts tenderly made by The Sunday Sewing Sisters. The Veterans & Community Housing Coalition provides housing and support services to homeless military veterans and their families, advocates on behalf of military Veterans and their families, and provides housing opportunities for low income households. Over 50,000 veterans are homeless on any given night in the United States. Nearly 600 homeless Veterans are in the Capital District.

Veterans & Community Housing Coalition has made a commitment to help homeless Veterans attain and maintain permanent housing, achieve financial stability, have access to healthcare, and equally important, regain their dignity. The Programs of the Veterans & Community Housing Coalition provide a resource and ray of hope for homeless Veterans in Saratoga, Warren, Washington, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie and Schenectady Counties. Through their housing and support services programs, transitional and permanent housing is provided to over 200 veterans a year. VCHC staff and partnering agencies provide services to help veterans develop skills, and secure employment or benefits to transition to independent living. BALLSTON SPA — The Brookside Museum on Charlton Street in Ballston Spa may be closing in the near future, unless the community and government can provide enough funding to keep it open.

Michelle Arthur, Executive Director for the museum, said that they have operated at a loss for several years, but that they have always found a way to make things work despite the shoestring budget.

“We definitely did not have enough money to keep payroll going to pay the staff, myself included. We didn’t have enough money to pay anybody’s salaries,” she said.

In total, the museum currently has a team of six people, Arthur the Director, an Education Director, an Administrative Assistant, two Genealogical Research Assistants and a Shop Manager, according to the website.

“Then faced with that, we were forced with the probability of at least closing the doors to

the museum and then figuring out how do we restructure from there,” Arthur continued.

“What needs to happen, does the museum ultimately dissolve, do we restructure into a smaller organization, can we raise the funds to keep going?”

She said “we have grit, we have passion, we have professional expertise, but we don’t have enough money to keep the doors open.”

She described the museum as being for educating and collection, saying, “we teach and we collect, and we teach about the objects that we collect which relate to Saratoga county and related to about 200 years of history to the county.”

She continued by saying that the museum has existed since a group of fifth graders created it in 1957 as part of a sesquicentennial, or 150-year anniversary, project.

She said that the children ended up joining the New York Historical Association.

“In 1963, they sought out and received a charter from the New York State Board of Regents to create the Saratoga County Historical Society, and there was a small museum space in the county Clerk’s building,” she said. “When that was torn down in about 1970, two wonderful donors purchased this building, which had been laying empty for about 10 years and donated it to the organization so that they had a museum space.”

Thus, in 1971, the Brookfield Museum moved into its permanent home at 6 Charlton St., Ballston Spa. The Brookfield Museum’s official website states that “In our National Registry 1792 Brookside

Museum building we teach more than 4,000 school children each year. Over the past 40 years we have fascinated another 50,000 children and parents with the Sheep to Shawl program. Our collection of 30,000 items covers three centuries of Saratoga County History. The Irena Wooten Research Room holds a unique and unparalleled research library for local history.”

Arthur added that the collection ranges from textiles to toys to farming and cooking implements to old family Bibles.

One of the more recent additions is a book of photocards, technically called a “carte de visite,” from the 1880’s, donated by the Booth family in the past year.

Part of the reason for the museum struggling is that according to Arthur, in recent years the county stopped funding non-profits like Brookside.

Additionally, the museum’s previous Director left in 2014, which made them ineligible for funding from NYSCA, the New York State Council on the Arts.

To aid the museum, the Saratoga County Historical Society, which is housed in the Brookside Museum and is technically the same entity as the museum, and Saratoga County History Roundtable have partnered to launch a “Save Brookside” campaign with the goal of raising $100,000 by March, 2020.

Arthur said that the goal was high enough so that the museum will have enough funds not just to stabilize, but to get over the hump that has plagued them in recent years.

She said that enough funding will allow them to stay open for long enough to formulate a new strategy, as the current one is clearly

not working; and also ideally would allow the museum to begin thriving as a hub of the community.

Jim Richmond, Coordinator for the Roundtable, said that the museum and Roundtable have been joined at the hip since the Roundtable first formed in April, 2018, as their monthly meetings take place inside the museum.

In a worst case scenario, where the museum officially closes, Richmond said that the Roundtable would need to find a new place to meet and a home for the group’s programs.

He added that the loss would be more than just a space though, as Brookside and the Roundtable from something greater than the sum of their parts, so the joint organization programs would suffer even more.

Meanwhile, Arthur said that for the museum, closing would mean that the 30,000-item collection would need to go to a publically accessible collection somewhere.

She emphasized that they would not be sold or disappear as that the New York State Board of Regents has strict protocols and regulations in place for such a scenario.

In the meantime, Richmond said that both the museum and Roundtable are contacting their

various connections to come up with enough money to support the museum, such as Arthur and the other museum employees contacting local and state government, and the Roundtable contacting its 160 members for donations.

In the intervening weeks since the potential closure was announced, the town of Ballston has pledged $20,000 to support the museum.

According to the official press release, “The Saratoga County Historical Society is now working with stakeholders to address longstanding financial structure issues and create a plan to keep the museum solvent for the foreseeable future. The funds from the Town of Ballston have been taken from the county landfill funds which were given to the Town to use at its discretion.”

Additionally, Richmond said that individual donations through the Roundtable have totaled somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000 as of earlier this week, on Monday, Nov. 4, and Arthur said that the town of Milton will be voting next month on whether or not to follow suit with Ballston and pledge money to aid the museum.

In response, Arthur said “members of the community, especially members of the Saratoga County Roundtable, have stepped up and are working with us to raise funds in order to keep the doors open and also be able to plan for the future. So we’ve had the Roundtable, we’ve had community support, and also municipal support.”

She said that she was grateful for everyone allowing the museum to have its “It’s a Wonderful Life” moment, and that at the absolute least the museum is certain to be open to the end of 2019.

Incumbent DPW Commissioner Anthony “Skip” Scirocco defeated challenger Dillon Moran 54.04% - 45.90%, current Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan bested challenger Patty Morrison 54.77% - 45.03%, and Commissioner of Accounts John Franck will resume his current post after running unopposed.

Earlier this year, Democrat Peter Martin announced he would not seek re-election as Public Safety Commissioner.

That position will be filled in 2020 by Republican Robin Dalton, who defeated Democrat Kendall Hicks 53.61% - 46.19% on Election Day. Dalton described herself as “overwhelmed and inspired” by the support of voters. “I truly am heartened by the fact that when you get involved in this community and you give back in this community… they give it back to you in spades,” she told a crowd of GOP well-wishers gathered at the Holiday Inn on Election Night that included prominent local party members Elise Stefanik, Jim Tedisco and John Sweeney.

Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who represents the 21st District, also addressed the crowd, congratulating “all of the candidates with the courage to step into the political arena,” reminding attendees that she will be running for re-election next November and localizing White House talking points to take a swipe at political adversaries. “We are seeing the Democratic Party split into Socialism and seeing far-left influences right here in Saratoga County,” Stefanik said.

“This is a real turning point for this city,” Kelly said after securing her re-election win. “We are all working together for the betterment of Saratoga Springs, and we need to remember that. We don’t need these nasty

Palette, Moving Up

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Palette, the café and cocktail bar on Broadway in Saratoga Springs, is adding an upstairs area called Palette Upstairs, to give entrepreneurs a co-working space with various amenities.

Palette Upstairs is “a diverse co-working space with a focus dedicated to supporting women in career and in life,” according to Eliza Bianco of Baker Public Relations in a release.

Catherine Hover, owner, operator and self-proclaimed “purveyor of fun” of Palette, said that she opened the original store earlier this year to make a space where women could feel safe and unjudged. She said that the upstairs area was always a part of the plan, however the lower area

was phase one, while Upstairs was phase two.

The funding came from founder members for Palette Upstairs. Hover said that originally, Upstairs had a goal of 50 people signing up before the space was fully functional. In the end, they reached the goal approximately two weeks ago, and held a ribbon cutting this past Thursday, Nov. 7 from 3 to 5 p.m.

The founder members each paid $2,200 as a yearly fee, and gained access to whatever amenities Palette already had access to. Some of the founders included two physicians, an accountant, bankers, a personal chef, a public relations social media marketer the Adirondack Trust Company among various other people and corporations.

Hover said that some of the planned features are being able to

use the Palette application to reserve space, both in the Upstairs area and the café and founder members being able to use a concierge through Palette for various tasks to help with their business.

She said that for the actual workspace in Palette Upstairs, there was a conference room equipped

with a television and whiteboard to allow for Skype and other such remote calls, a community room that can fit around a dozen people so they can hang out or have small private meetings, and they plan to have childcare services as a 2020 goal to create “mommy office hour.”

Additionally, she said that the space would have showers, lockers, a printer, fax machine and could accept peoples’ mail and even phone calls, if they wanted to have a Broadway address on their business card or any other reason.

For non-founding members, Hover said that they are currently waitlisting applicants while they finish opening up Upstairs, but that eventually people would be able to join on a yearly or monthly membership, or could pay daily fees to use the spaces.

She said that for the monthly membership, a person would pay $299, or for the same timespan but on a weekday only schedule, as opposed to the founders’ sevenday access, it would be $199.

She added that while the space is focused on helping women take their businesses to the next level, it is not exclusively for women, men are welcome.

“It’s not just for women, of course not,” Hover said. “I 100% would like to support everyone who walks through the door, regardless of gender or anything else.”

Hover concluded by imploring that anyone who is interested in Palette Upstairs to call and check out the space, saying “if anyone is curious whatsoever to see what we’re all about here to just show up. They should be here for it, they should give us a call and come see the space and meet us.”

Ballston Spa Schools Plan Drill Ballston Spa Students Present Mamma Mia! for Emergency Release Day BALLSTON SPA — An early dismissal drill has been scheduled for the Ballston Spa Central School District on Friday, November 8. The school district will conduct a state-mandated early release drill as part of an Emergency Management Plan to prepare for conditions including severe weather or unexpected building problems such as loss of power or heat, that would require the district to release students early. Under real emergency conditions, parents would be notified through radio and

television stations, social media and the district’s SchoolMessenger notification system.

As a result of this drill, students will be released from school fifteen minutes earlier than normal on November 8, 2019.

Skidmore Cares Kicks Off 14th Season of Giving to Neighbors in Need SARATOGA SPRINGS — For the 14th consecutive year, faculty and staff at Skidmore College are joining together through the College’s “Skidmore Cares” program to assist those in need in Saratoga County.

Since the community service program began in 2006

by Skidmore President Philip A. Glotzbach and Marie Glotzbach, the Skidmore community has donated more than $108,000 in monetary gifts, more than 26,000 food items and nearly 12,000 school supplies to nonprofit agencies throughout Saratoga County.

On Wednesday, approximately 125 Skidmore faculty and staff members attended a kickoff luncheon on

campus to mark the beginning of the donation effort.

Representatives from several Saratoga-based community service agencies attended the luncheon.

The donations made by the Skidmore community will be distributed to 10 participating community service agencies and nonprofit organizations including Corinth Central School District, Franklin Community Center, Latino Community Advocacy Program, Mary’s Haven, Salvation Army, Saratoga Center for the Family, Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council, Saratoga Springs City School District PATHS program, Shelters of Saratoga and Wellspring.

Research shows that a daily practice of gratitude can elevate our energy levels, increase positive feelings and help us feel more connected to one another and spirit.

Why wait for one day a year to practice Thanksgiving? This month set an intention to start

your day with one thing you are thankful for and keep this practice going all month long!

In the stresses of day-today life it is so easy to become overwhelmed with daily tasks and responsibilities. You may find that as soon as you start your day you begin to run your to do list and find yourself feeling unsettled and anxious. This can make your body fuel a stress response causing your heart rate to increase and your body to go into fight or flight mode.

Simply shifting your daily intention to begin the day with an attitude of gratitude will immediately increase feelings of calmness and peace of mind.

Another trick to keeping yourself centered and calm as you begin each new day is to speak gently and kindly to yourselfout loud! While this may sound odd when you speak out loud to yourself about how you will begin your day you stop your mind from getting on the run-away anxiety train of impending doom!

My 3-year-old will often ask me who I am talking to as I stand in the kitchen and slowly list out loud each task to be done. It helps me stay focused, calm and

get things done in an efficient way instead of running around frantically full of anxiety.

“I am going to put this load of laundry in and then empty the dishwasher, now I’m going to warm up my coffee and take a minute to reflect on the beauty of

the day.” You will be amazed how speaking out loud can add a sense of control and peace to what may feel like an overwhelming day.

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude is an easy way to keep yourself feeling healthy emotionally, physically and

spiritually. You don’t have to spend hours doing gratitude affirmations, reading a self-help book or journaling ten things you are thankful for. Simply start each day with a purposeful dialogue (out loud), going over what you have to accomplish in the present moment and one thing you appreciate.

The key to living everyday life with intention and purpose is to make it simple to practice cultivating spirituality.

Don’t wait for holidays to practice thanksgiving, start this month with a new practice and a new attitude.

“MOTHERING BOYS”

by Katherine Morna Towne for Saratoga TODAY At my boys’ school there’s a “school store” once a week where the kids can purchase little things like pencils, erasers, and bouncy balls. Every week they beg me for money for the school store—I don’t always give them money, but when I do, I usually give them one dollar, as there are things they can buy that cost a dollar or less. But today, when I told one of my little guys that I had put an envelope containing a dollar in his school folder, he got really angry, because he wanted more than a dollar.

Well. Guess who’s not getting a dollar, or any amount, for a good while?

Being ungrateful is one of the things that I’m constantly on my boys about. They’re healthy, safe, warm, fed, clothed, and loved, and they have a lot of other things in addition to those essentials—in my mind, there’s no room for ingratitude when they have all those things that so many others don’t.

Not only that, but I’ve been intrigued by the idea that having an “attitude of gratitude” can have a positive impact on one’s physical, psychological, and social lives. A 2014 article on Forbes. com by Amy Morin entitled “7 Scientifically Proven Benefits Of Gratitude That Will Motivate You To Give Thanks Year-Round” (available online) explains how cultivating gratitude can benefit everything from sleep to selfesteem, it can enhance empathy and reduce aggression, and it can increase one’s ability to cope: “Recognizing all you have to be thankful for—even during the worst times of your life—fosters resilience.” While I want my children to be grateful for what they have simply because they should be, I quite like that they’ll be healthier and happier by being grateful, too—and it’s a great reminder for me as well.

A more recent post (August 2019) on the web site HappierHuman.com called “31 Benefits of Gratitude: The Ultimate Science-Backed Guide” also noted something else I’ve observed: “Gratitude is a personality trait. Some people have more grateful personalities than others” and, while cultivating gratitude is a skill that can be learned through practice, some people need more practice than others. I’ve definitely seen this in some of my own children, which can make it a challenge to keep the general morale of the family up (haven’t you found that people

who are always pointing out how bad things are can be such a drain on others’ mental peace?), so you can often hear me saying, “Be grateful for what you have!” I’ve also been known to say, “Now that you’ve complained about everything, tell me something you’re grateful for.” And my mom often tells my boys, “Remember to be patient and grateful!”

Hopefully, the repetitive nature of these lessons will help them stick and make it easy for the boys to recall later in life.

Speaking of reminders to be grateful, we’re all looking forward to Thanksgiving (one of my boys has said it’s his favorite holiday, more than Christmas and his birthday!), and one of the things we’ve done in the past is to take time to share out loud the things we’re grateful for. I recently asked my boys what they’re grateful for, having both this article and Thanksgiving in mind, and I was so pleased that they all included family (including, specifically, “my brothers”) and friends, our home, and our food—those very things that I never want them to take for granted. That’s something I’m definitely grateful for this year!

THE MYSTERIES OF PROBATE What Does it Mean to Probate a Will? is easier to pursue, but you may still choose to have the benefit of experienced counsel.

Do I have to qualify in some way to be an Executor?

by Matt Dorsey for Saratoga TODAY There is a great deal of misunderstanding about the process involving the probate of a Last Will and Testament. If you have been named as the Executor in someone’s Will, you may not know what your responsibilities are and how to start.

What follows are some basic questions and answers related to the probate of a Will. This Q&A will help you better understand the probate process from the perspective of a potential Executor.

If I am named Executor in someone’s Will, can I act right away?

No. If someone dies and they named you as the Executor in their Will, you are not authorized to act as Executor just because you were named. You need to petition the Surrogates Court in the county where the decedent lived and ask to be appointed as the Executor by the Surrogates Court Judge.

Do I need a lawyer to petition the court?

You are not required to have a lawyer, however, if you are unfamiliar with the probate process, you may find it very difficult to handle the matter without legal representation.

Is that true in all cases?

The one exception may be in the case of a small estate, i.e. an estate where the decedent owned no real estate and their personal property was valued at less than $30,000.00.

There is a small estate process that

Generally speaking, to act as an Executor, you need to be a competent adult who has not been convicted of a felony.

There are additional subjective characteristics that are sometimes considered by the court, if an objection is brought against your appointment. Those characteristics may include whether you are a substance abuser or dishonest in financial matters.

What happens if the Surrogates Court appoints me as Executor?

If you are appointed, the court issues you Letters Testamentary in the estate of the decedent. This authority allows you to collect the assets of the decedent, pay the estate’s expenses and debts, and distribute the remaining assets to the beneficiaries.

Is there a priority as to which debts and claims get paid first?

Yes, and it is very important you pay attention to that priority. Generally speaking, estate administration expenses are paid first. After that, the federal and state governments have priority, then judgment creditors, and then general creditors.

Paying debts or claims out of order may subject the Executor to being held personally responsible for the improperly paid amount.

Does the estate need to remain open for a long time?

You need to keep the estate open for seven months after you are issued Letters Testamentary. During this time, creditors and claimants can file claims against the estate.

Can I pay out money to beneficiaries during this time period?

It is generally recommended that you not do so, in order to ensure that sufficient funds are available to pay all debts and claims of the estate.

How does the estate wrap up?

Before you seek to wrap up the estate, you need to file an Inventory with the court. The

Inventory details the general values of the probate assets and what types of non-probate assets were owned by the decedent.

After that is filed, you can formally or informally close the estate.

How do you informally close an estate?

You informally close an estate by having all beneficiaries sign a receipt and release form confirming they’ve received what they were due under the Will and releasing you from any further liability to them as Executor. Receipts and releases need to be filed with the court for all beneficiaries. In addition, the court may require an additional statement from you as Executor regarding the closure of the estate.

How do I formally close an estate?

Estates are formally closed by filing an account for all estate activity and a petition seeking the approval of the account by the court. This proceeding is on notice to all beneficiaries and other interested parties, i.e. creditors. This process may be used in cases where there are disputes regarding the estate or where one or more beneficiaries are under a disability.

Are there tax issues involved?

It is highly recommended you seek the advice of an accountant when acting as Executor. The accountant

can assist with any final income tax returns for the decedent, as well as any income tax returns for the estate. If the estate is large enough, there may also be a need to file estate tax returns with the state and federal governments.

It is important to understand that if someone names you as Executor in their Will, you do not have the power to act as Executor simply because the person died. There is a formal legal process that governs your appointment by a court and the court’s supervision of your handling of the estate administration. Failing to understand and abide by your obligations as an Executor could have serious implications for you and the other parties interested in the estate.

In order to ensure you handle your responsibilities properly, it is advisable to seek the assistance of experienced professionals, including attorneys and accountants.

With the right guidance, the process can be successfully navigated to the benefit of all parties concerned.

Time for a New Mattress? benefits from this rest. If you’re sleeping on a comfortable and supportive mattress, it makes it easier for your body to reach the necessary, deeper stages of sleep.

There are a few factors to take into consideration when choosing the best mattress for your body.

How do I choose the right mattress?

Your mattress should support your body in its natural position, allowing it to rest and recover from the day’s activities. Choosing the right mattress is highly subjective, meaning that you must find the one that works best for you. In order to be most comfortable throughout the night, your body position should be as neutral as possible, which means the shoulders and hips need to sink into the mattress a little, and the mattress needs to meet the waist.

You should look for a mattress

that is firm enough to support your skeleton, even in a side-lying position, but soft enough that it is truly comfortable.

A mattress that is too firm could irritate the hips and shoulders while you are lying down, but one that is too soft can lack the support that your body needs. A mattress that does not support the skeleton properly will create stress on joints in the spine, neck and possibly even the knees, which can result in chronic recurrent pain.

Popular choices today include a good-quality spring mattress with a pillow topper or a dense memory foam mattress. In respect to the

latter, many manufacturers have found ways to keep these mattresses from capturing too much body heat, keeping you cool and comfortable throughout the night.

When shopping for a new mattress, the best thing you can do is go to a store and personally try out different types of mattresses.

If they will let you take a test nap, go for it!

What if I suffer from back pain or have a disability?

Even if you suffer from back pain or a disability, the selection of a mattress is based on what feels best to you. You can reduce any strain on the body further by sleeping on your side with a body pillow, regardless of which type of mattress you decide to purchase.

The upper arm and upper knee should be supported by the pillow in order to keep the spine aligned while you sleep. Maintaining good posture while you sleep will help prevent stress points that may aggravate your joints and the connective tissue that holds your body together. There are also mattresses that exist today specifically for people with special needs, including those with diabetes, so be sure to investigate your options thoroughly.

When is it time to get a new mattress?

If you are waking up every morning feeling sore and stiff, there’s a strong possibility that the source of your pain is your mattress. Likewise, if you find that you sleep better in a hotel bed than at home, then it might be time for a new mattress.

To determine if your mattress is a contributing factor to your back pain, lay something rigid across your bed, such as a meter stick. If you can fit your hand or fingers in the gap between the meter stick and the mattress, your mattress is sagging and it’s time to look for a new one.

Another option is to place a marble on your mattress and see if it rolls to where your heaviest spot is, which would also indicate a sagging mattress. It’s important to consider the age of your mattress, as well; most are only productive for about five to seven years.

If you cannot afford a good mattress right away, consider reinforcing your mattress by placing some plywood underneath it. This may give you some extra support while you save up and shop. Keep in mind that expensive does not necessarily mean better.

Comfort and support are the keys to a good night’s sleep, so make sure to choose a mattress that is comfortable on your skin and supportive to your body. If you can find that combination, that is the mattress for you.

What else can I do to sleep better?

To get your best rest, keep in mind that to maximize the benefits of sleep, it’s important to create a peaceful and restful environment in your bedroom.

The body generally needs about two hours to slow down before going to sleep. During this time, power off any electronic devices that emit blue light and take time to relax before crawling onto your brand-new mattress.

Everyday Identity Protection Strategies

for Saratoga TODAY PROTECTING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION is becoming ever more important, and ever more difficult, in our increasingly connected world.

The good news is that there are steps you can take to help reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of identity theft.

In 2017 Equifax had a major data breach that affected 143 million people. Do you know if you were affected? Equifax has come to a settlement as a result of the breach. You can now find out if your data was compromised and take steps to protect your identity going forward. Visit www. equifaxbreachsettlement.com . If your data was impacted, you may be entitled to up to 10 years of free credit monitoring, cash payments, and identity restoration.

Consider checking on whether your child’s information was part the breach as well. The identities of children are often stolen because they are seldom monitored. In those cases, you may not find out until your child applies for a student loan. The good news is, since minors can’t open credit cards, resolution is typically a bit easier than with adults.

Using a free service like Credit Karma, which is a free app available for smartphones, can give you easy access to your credit scores and activity, and I find it to be a convenient option for the

ongoing monitoring of activity on my accounts, as well as receiving notification when a credit inquiry may be made.

Most Americans are finding that their mailboxes are once again being stuffed with those “prequalified” credit card offers.

In order to make it easy for you to apply, these offers are often prefilled with a lot of your personal information, making them easy targets for identity thieves.

You can now turn a majority of these offers off by visiting www. optoutprescreen.com and optingout. You can opt to turn them off for 5 years, or forever!

As for the rest of your mail, be sure to shred anything which may have any personally identifiable information. Any mail that you throw away unopened should also be shredded because you don’t know what information it may include.

Most people only send two kinds of mail from home: bill payments and greeting cards. Both of these typically contain a check with your name, account number, routing information, address, and phone number; a lot of what’s needed to steal your identity. What’s more is that we put up a little red flag on our mailboxes which makes it easy for would-be thieves to find it! Consider bringing any of this type of mail to your post office or using a blue USPS mailbox which may be more secure.

Almost every service provider and vendor you utilize offers paperless billing, and you should consider opting-in to these services. Doing so will help keep sensitive information out of your mailbox, but still can give you secure access online to view and print documents as needed.

Secure online payments can eliminate the chances of outgoing checks being stolen as well.

We’re all told to change our passwords frequently, and to use

more sophisticated combinations of letters, numbers, and special characters to make it harder for people or bots to break into our systems. The overwhelming number of passwords and their complexity actually dissuade many people from taking the steps they should be to protect their access. Consider using a password

We live in an ever-connected world and you need to be vigilant that the conveniences that connectivity offers don’t put you at risk of identity theft. manager to keep track of your passwords and do it in secure way.

These services will store your various passwords in an encrypted format, and will often require a single master password for gaining access. This limits the number of passwords you actually have to remember, allows you to have unique passwords for different sites, and eliminates the passwordpost-its or lists you probably have somewhere near your computer.

When creating passwords, remember that they don’t have to be terribly complex to foil most brute force breaches (those where passwords are guessed).

The passphrase “IHave3Dogs” would take approximately 27,000 years to hack, but the password “grandma” is hacked in under 2 hours. So, “IHave3Dogs” can be

as effective as “1r48OisBP8” but a whole lot easier to remember!

Even though you may have a secure password, you should still change it regularly. The reason is that you likely use some similar user names and passwords across platforms. If a breach happens, and that data is stolen from a vendor, the combinations can be tried

across other sites to gain access.

Changing your passwords on a regular basis can help reduce the risk that a breach in one place could spread to your other services.

We live in an ever-connected world and you need to be vigilant that the conveniences that connectivity offers don’t put you at risk of identity theft. While you may never be able to eliminate the chances, there is plenty you can do to reduce your risk.

Romanesco Romanesco, a relative of broccoli and cauliflower, is chartreuse in color and has a striking fractal pattern.

When compared to a traditional cauliflower, its texture is far more crunchy and its flavor is delicate and nutty. Romanesco can be blanched and added to salads, veggie trays, and cold pasta dishes. It may also be roasted or sauteed in olive oil.

Kohlrabi Kohlrabi is another unfamiliar brassica. With a taste and texture that is similar to a broccoli stem or cabbage heart, its flavor is milder and sweeter. The young stem can be as crisp and juicy as an apple, although much less sweet. The bulbous part of this vegetable may be used raw in salads or slaws. Even the leaves are edible and can be used in place of collard greens and kale.

Lion's Mane Lion's mane is one of the most interesting-looking and beautiful mushrooms. Its flavor and texture are similar to crab or lobster meat: a sweet-savory flavor, and meaty texture. To prepare, tear the whole mushrooms into bite-sized wedges. Heat a large skillet and dry sauté the mushroom pieces until the edges begin to brown. Add a pat of butter and a clove of finely chopped garlic to the skillet and toss to coat.

Cook the mushrooms until they are golden brown and finish with a pinch of sea salt.

Yellow tomatoes Yellow tomatoes have thick skin and are succulent and meaty in texture. Yellow varieties of tomatoes are rather sweet, and often taste milder and less acidic than red tomatoes. Yellow tomatoes are exclusively available at Shushan Valley Hydro Farms throughout the winter.

This simple side dish may complement salt potatoes, rice, fried eggs, or even a pan-fried schnitzel. The author also recommends serving alongside breaded, pan-fried fish.

Yields: 4 servings | Prep & Cook Time: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 1/2 tablespoons butter*

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 2 tablespoons flour

• 3 to 4 fresh kohlrabi*

• Salt to taste

• 2 cups broth or salted water

• Garnish: parsley*

• Freshly grated nutmeg to taste

INSTRUCTIONS: PARBOIL THE KOHLRABI: 1. Cut away the kohlrabi’s outer skin, being sure to remove any woody or stringy parts, just under the surface. If the bulb is young, you will not have to cut as deep as if it is old. If possible, save some of the inner, tender leaves for garnish.

2. Cut the bulb into thick slices with a large knife, then into strips or cubes, as you like.

3. Heat the vegetable broth or salted water to boiling, then add the kohlrabi, reduce the heat and cook the vegetables until soft, 5 to 10 minutes. Drain, reserving broth, and set aside.

MAKE A WHITE SAUCE OR "DIE MEHLSCHWITZE" 1. Melt butter in a pan and stir in the flour. For a gluten-free sauce, use gluten-free flour, such as rice flour, brown rice flour or sorghum flour, all of which thicken just fine.

2. Cook the flour in the butter over medium heat for several minutes, stirring constantly.

3. Little by little add the saved broth or cooking water. Stir after each addition until smooth, then bring it back to bubbling. Add enough of the broth to make a velvety sauce, about 1 to 2 cups.

4. Season to taste with freshly grated nutmeg and salt.

5. Stir in the cooked kohlrabi and heat through.

6. Chop the reserved leaves and some parsley and sprinkle on top of the vegetables for a little color and a nice presentation. Enjoy!

Hello my Foodie Friends !

Both my wife and I grew up in Italian homes where the house always smelled delicious especially when mom was making a sauce and meatballs. Ahhh, I can still smell and taste the wonder of their sauces and the incredible meatballs.

I can also remember helping my grandmother carry her large sauté pan that she would later fill with meatballs. Of course, I would do anything to sneak one of these meatballs once they were done!

The sauté pan is among the most used pans in the kitchen.

These wide, flat-bottomed pans have high L-shaped sides and are ideal for deep or shallow frying such as fried chicken, braising, sautéing meatballs or making Mexican rice. It is the perfect pot for one pot meals.

Sautéing is a form of dry cook heating that uses a very hot pan and a small amount of fat to cook the food very quickly. Like other dryheat cooking methods, sautéing browns the food’s surface as it cooks and develops complex flavors and aromas. Sautéing Requires a Very Hot Pan. When sautéing, it’s important to heat the pan for a minute, then add a small amount of fat and let the fat get hot as well, before adding the food to the pan.

This hot fat helps to brown the surface of the food. Another key is to avoid overloading or overcrowding the pan. Don’t Overcrowd the Pan. In order to achieve the desired browning of the food, the pan must stay hot throughout the cooking process. Too much food in the pan dissipates the heat, causing the food to steam or boil rather than sauté.

Keep the Food Moving. There’s another element to sautéing — the toss. The word sauté actually means “jump” in French. Tossing or flipping the food in the pan ensures that it cooks evenly, but it also helps keep the pan hot (culinaryarts.about.

com). Sauté pan options include; cast iron, enamel cast iron, and layer bonded Stainless Steel cookware.

• 5 cloves garlic, minced fine

• 1 cup day-old Italian bread, soaked in water, squeezed, and torn into ½ inch pieces

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Combine ground beef, pork and veal in a large mixing bowl.

Soak day old Italian bread in water until the water is absorbed.

Squeeze out as much of the water as possible. Tear the bread into chunks and add to the meat mixture. Add remaining ingredients in order and mix thoroughly. Using the palms of the hands, form meatballs 2 to 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

2. In a large skillet, add the olive oil, and heat over medium high heat.

Add the meatballs to the skillet, making sure not to crowd the pan. This step might take 2-3 rounds. Cook the meatball on each side for a total of about 6 minutes. Remove the meatballs and repeat the process if needed.

3. Drain excess olive oil from the pan and place back over the flame. Add the marinara sauce and then the meatballs back to the sauce. Continue to cook the meatballs for about 20 minutes until they are completely cooked, no pink in the center, and the marinara sauce is warmed. stirring when you’re simmering stews, whisking sauces or browning meats. The lid locks in moisture and heat after browning to finish cooking ingredients, either on the stovetop or in the oven, ideal for preparing one-pan meals. Author to Discuss Parent’s Journey of Survival at Holocaust Lecture SARATOGA SPRINGS — To commemorate Kristallnacht, Saratoga Chabad will host a holocaust lecture at 7 p.m. on Nov. 10 at 130 Circular St. where Mark Beiderman will share his parent’s amazing journey of survival.

This is the extraordinary story of the author’s 20-year quest to find gold coins which his father’s family buried in their backyard in Poland just prior to being deported by the Nazis into the

concentration camps. His father survived the war but died when the author was a teenager, leaving him only with the knowledge that he had buried coins somewhere in Poland and no information about his family. During his quest, Beiderman uncovers many interesting and disturbing facts about his father and mother and their families, such as the fact that his father was the third person on Oskar Schindler’s list and had a

chance meeting with Adolf Hitler, and his mother was selected as a cook for the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele. The book details the author’s quest to unearth his family past and his father’s treasure and continues with his parent’s amazing post-war years in Europe and their eventual arrival in North America.

Beiderman was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1961 the son of two Holocaust Survivors both of whom lost their entire families. He became an avid holocaust history devotee when, at a young age, he became aware of a complete lack of extended family and wanted to learn what had happened to them. Mark graduated from the veterinary school in 1988 and specialized in horse medicine and surgery.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Performing Arts Center announced it will present its first-ever holiday series with programming featuring internationally acclaimed artists and ensembles including the Vienna Boys Choir (Dec. 4), the Salzburg Marionette Theatre in a production of The Nutcracker (Dec. 6 & 7), and British vocal ensemble VOCES8 (Dec. 19) for their Saratoga debuts. Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL) will also return to Saratoga to perform Bach’s beloved Brandenburg Concertos (Dec. 14).

“Over the past three years, we have been expanding SPAC’s programming beyond the traditional summer season both on our campus and in venues throughout the region.

This December that vision is realized with four diverse, holiday programs by worldclass companies that will delight families, classical lovers and curious newcomers alike. We anticipate that this new holiday series will mark the start of many new traditions, bringing together our community to revel in the magic of the season,” said Elizabeth Sobol, President & CEO of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, in a statement.

LAKE GEORGE — A threeday celebration of the trop-rock music of Jimmy Buffet and the laid-back culture that’s embraced it will be held at the Charles R. Wood Park’s Festival Commons in Lake George Village on Father’s Day Weekend, 2020.

Called “Fins Up LG” and produced by Dave Ehmann, who created the Adirondack Independence Music Festival, the festival will feature more than fifteen bands on two stages, playing continuously from June 19 through June 21.

“It’s a stellar line up of trop-rock bands, most notably, Jimmy and the Parrots. That’s not a Jimmy Buffet tribute band, though it plays a lot of the same music. We do have Buffet tribute acts, including the best known of these, the Caribbean Chillers, as well as some incredible zydeco, surf guitar, Cajun and country acts,” said Ehmann, in a statement. “We won’t have three days of the same sound. But it’s all upbeat, it’s all light-hearted. It’s all in the spirit of having fun.”

The event is sanctioned by “Parrothead” clubs, a loosely-knit confederation of tropic-garbed, sunset worshipping would-be pirates and beachcombers who “party with a purpose.”

The purpose of the party in Lake George will be to raise funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Food vendors (cajun-style included), a margarita and daiquiri bar and a Mardis Gras parade are among the weekend’s features.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Junior Cross-Country runner Michael McDonald started the season off with a personal goal in mind: to break 20 minutes in his 5K race. On Monday, November 4, he achieved that goal at the Section two Championships as he finished his race in 19 minutes 59:22 seconds.

McDonald, born with a mild form of Cerebral Palsy perseveres, through the racecourse year after year ever since the day he fell in love with running.

"I have to be constantly reminded of the fact that I have cerebral palsy, honestly. It's so mild I don't feel it. But the biggest hindrance that it has on my game is my stride length,” said McDonald. “When you run, each step you want to cover as much ground as possible, so you do less steps. It's hard for me to stretch out my legs as far as it would be for someone without.”

When McDonald was a young teen, he decided to accompany his mother to the local YMCA where she spent a lot of her free time. Once there he was drawn to the facility's treadmills and indoor track.

“I just got curious. My mom would go to the gym, be gone for a few hours and come back and I wanted to know what's goin' on so I was like 'hey, why don't I tag along for one day?' and I fell in love," said McDonald.

Throughout the year McDonald runs not only for his varsity cross-country team at Saratoga Central Catholic, but on the track team as well. When not in season he tries to run at least every other day to stay in shape. His father is very diligent in making sure he stays in shape over the off season.

He enjoys the opportunity to encourage and support his teammates and his coach the same way they encourage him every day. Before races, he and his team join together and pray the Hail Mary as a team ritual, and value that God is with them.

Meets are a great time for McDonald to bask in the competitive and encouraging atmosphere with music blaring (often the theme song to the "Rocky" movie) and the exciting energy from his teammates. But

one thing McDonald values is having his biggest supporter cheer him on at the finish line.

"Well, Mom, when she screams for me at the finish line when people scream at the finish line it kind of gets drowned out ‘cause everybody screams. But when my Mom screams you can hear it. Yeah, that is amazing when she's there," said McDonald.

As cross-country season has come to a close, McDonald is looking forward to joining the bowling team for the winter season, as that is another opportunity for him represent his school.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Trying to learn a new skill can be challenging from finding the right program to providing the best skills, to getting the necessary equipment. This year, Saratoga Youth Hockey (SYH) is partnering with the New York Rangers (NYR) to increase accessibility and to guarantee expert training with their new beginner ice hockey program, Learn to Skate (LTS).

"We were just looking for ways of growing our program and growing the game of youth hockey," said Melinda Guyett, SYH Special Events and Tournaments Director.

This is a first-time partnership that SYH has with the New York Rangers, a hockey team based out of New York City. USA Hockey and Hockey Canada have a Learn to Play initiative, that is aimed to be the gold standard for youth hockey communities.

As of now the program is in its third week of their first session. There will be three sessions in total, each running once a week for 10 weeks, held at the Weibel Ice Rink. Throughout these sessions, first time hockey players – both boys and girls from ages four through nine will learn the basics of hockey from NYR staff and alumni, including Mark Hartman, from the 1994 Stanley Cup Team.

“The really cool thing about this program is first time hockey players - first time participants get head to toe equipment," said Guyett.

Having the equipment included at no additional cost is a way to increase accessibility in building youth participation in the sport of hockey.

Also, in an effort to expand participation this upcoming season, SYH will for the first time have an all girls’ team (as of now the girls participate on a co – ed team). Amanda Kessel of the USA Olympic Women’s Hockey team will be visiting to work with the girls.

do to get more children involved in youth sports,” said Guyett. “This is just something that came about an amazing opportunity to increase access to all youths within the community, to be a part of a team and just have that life experience."

On Saturday, November 9, there will be a free event to try out hockey with the Saratoga

Blue Knights and The New York Rangers, as they will be signing autographs, providing first time skaters with take home gifts! One can register on the New York Rangers website.

to be Featured in National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Foal Patrol Season 3 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Alpine Sky, a 7-year-old dark bay daughter of Indian Charlie owned by Old Tavern Farm, will be on the roster of featured horses for the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Foal Patrol Season 3, which will debut online Friday, December 27 at www.foalpatrol.com. The live stream will coincide with a special free kickoff event at the Museum that day, the familyfriendly “Foal Patrol Kids!” open house from 10 a.m. to noon.

The first two seasons of Foal Patrol, a one-of-a-kind collection of live cameras following the daily activities of in-foal mares,

had more than three million total views from December 2017 through September 2019. More participating horses will be announced weekly leading up to the debut of Season 3.

Consigned by Gainesway, Alpine Sky was purchased for $600,000 at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. Racing from 2015 through 2018, Alpine Sky won or placed in 10 of her 22 career starts with earnings of $179,472. She broke her maiden on Oct. 1, 2016 at Laurel Park and also won at Delaware, Gulfstream, and Aqueduct.

Alpine Sky is in foal to More Than Ready with an expected foaling date of April 21, 2020.

The “Foal Patrol Kids!” event on December 27 will feature a variety of fun and educational activities plus snacks, giveaways, and special guests. SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge No. 161 will hold its annual Hoop Shoot basketball free throw shooting competition on Saturday, November 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Christopher Dailey Gym, Gavin Park, at 10 Lewis Drive in Wilton.

All ages three to adult are welcome to join in these instructional sessions. Sessions will take place Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. in two six-week sessions at Vernon Ice Rink on Weibel Ave. in Saratoga Springs.

This event is free and open to boys and girls ages 8-13. Boys and girls will be divided into separate divisions and by age groups of 8-9-year old’s, 10-11year old’s and 12-13 year old’s. Participants’ eligibility will be determined as of their age on April 1, 2020.

Pre-registration is not required, although the Town of Wilton Recreation Department is accepting preregistrations at Gavin Park.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in all age groups in both divisions. Local winners will advance to the District Championship, and have the opportunity to advance to Regional, State and National Championship competitions. All national champions will be enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts

West Side Stadium 65 - Stevens 57 With 20 and 19 points respectively from Tom Welch and Dave Wolfe, West Side went on to defeat Stevens by 8 points. Phil Heffernan had a game high 28 points for Stevens.

Mama Mia’s Restaurant 63 – West Side Stadium 37 Mama Mia’s got out to an early lead and never looked back in a 63 to 37 victory over West Side Stadium. Phil Fitzpatrick dropped in 18 points while teammates Pat Correa added 11 points in the win. Bob Theiss scored 18 in the defeat.

Turning Point 54 – Nemer Auto 45 Turning Point used a game high 31 points from Bob Hanson and teammate Mike Scanlon contributed another 19 points in the victory over Nemer Auto 54 to 45. Pat Reidy scored 17 points; Mark Kehrer had 13 points in the defeat.

Stevens 62 – Turning Point 55 Steven’s Paul Gross had a game high 19 points and teammates Gerry Heffernan and Pat Killian contributed 16 points each in a 62 to 55 win over The Turning Point. Bob Hanson scored 18 points and Jason Laing added 17 points for Turning Point.

Walton’s Sports 61 – Nemer Auto 51 Getting points from everyone on the team Walton pulled out a 10 victory over Nemer Auto. Mike Bentley poured in 21 points and Alex Marin had 20 points in the win while Pat Reidy scored 19 points and Charlie Maurer had 12 points in loss.

D’Andrea’s Pizza 61 – Mama Mia’s Restaurant 46 After only holding a 1-point lead at half-time D’Andrea’s Pizza pulled away in the second half to get a 61 to 46 triumph over Mama Mia’s. Rory Wilson led the way with 24 points while teammates Dave Grimmick each scored 11 points for D’Andrea’s.

Lazy Dog 62 – Walton’s Sports 50 Lazy Dog got out to a 17-point first period lead and cruised on from there to get a 62 to 50 win over Walton’s Sports. Lazy Dog got 22 points from Scott Clark, 17 points from Joe Twomey and 15 points from Todd McShane. Walton’s Sports was led by Alex Marin with 22 points along with 10 points apiece from Mike Bentley and Jimmy Parker.
