by allowing kids to continue the longtime practice of selling bottles of water and pencils outside Saratoga Race Course.

“We’re continuing what we started last year, to encourage minors to become entrepreneurs,” explained Franck, who during his childhood years had sold pencils outside of the racecourse.

Who: Roger Kaye Q. Where do you live?

A. Glens Falls. I was going to move to Saratoga in 1987 – there was a house all set up in Greenfield Center with 12 acres of land, but the people who were selling it couldn’t get the title (documentation) together. At that time it was only $70,000. Saratoga was kind of in decline then.

Q. Where are you originally from?

A. Mount Kisco, New York.

Q. How would you describe yourself?

A. I’m an artist, an inventor. I’ve been inventing things all my life. I’m also professional songwriter and write for the music market down in Nashville.

Q. What are the contents of the two large frames you have with you today?

A. There are 48 different pieces here. It’s reverse painting on glass. I re-invented the process. I took something that’s been 600 years in traditional manufacturing techniques and brought it into

digital age. I design everything on the computer and engrave it into the glass and then I hand-paint and embellish the engravings.

Q. Can you describe some of these pieces?

A. I’ve got every guitar you can imagine. This is an exact copy of “Brownie” - Eric Clapton’s guitar - right down to the burn marks where he used to hang his cigarette. I have (exact copies of) Albert Lee’s guitar, Martin Barre’s guitar, Santana’s. You can count the fret markers - they’re correct, and the strings are exactly where they should be. Everything is measured to the tenth. All hand painted. They’re refrigerator magnets, stand-ups, they can hang on a wall.

I’ve also been doing all sorts of Grateful Dead stuff, and I have corporate accounts. I have a whole series of butterflies, bugs and cats; I’ve got a whole series of Adirondack hiking scenes and a company in Arizona just hired me to do 1,400 pieces for a rocket company, with different scenes of the rocket on the launchpad, all the way to the satellites.

•The Memorial Duathlon & 5 K

On Sunday, May 26 the Saratoga Springs Lions Club will sponsor the 2019 Memorial Duathlon and 5K. The race will begin at 8 a.m. at the Saratoga Casino. Join the Moreau Community Center for a Memorial Day BBQ & Cookout on Friday, May 24 at 4 p.m. The community Center is located at 144 Main St. in South Glens Falls. Staring at 8 a.m. on May 25 join us as we place flags on every Veterans gravesite here at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

Stay with us shortly after this event at 11 a.m. as we hold a Memorial Day Ceremony where we pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of these great men and women. After this event you will truly understand the real reason we have a Memorial Day. Stand proudly with others as we show honor, dignity, and respect to our Nation’s finest.

Nearly 500 Americans were killed or wounded in the Battles of Saratoga, while most were from New England, some were from New York State, and most are still buried on the battlefield in unmarked graves. This special event focuses on the sacrifices made by Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey officers and soldiers who lost their lives at Saratoga in 1777. On Monday, May 27 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., park staff and volunteers from the public will be invited to read the names of Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey men who died in the Battles of Saratoga, battles which marked the “most important battle fought in the world during the last 1,000 years.” Saratoga National Historic Park is located at 648 Route 32 in Stillwater.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A.J. Sarno passed away Thursday May 16 at his home in Saratoga Springs holding the hand of Dolores (Dee), his beloved wife of 60 years.

He shared his final days with Dee and his children Dawn Nolan, Douglas Sarno, and Dina Slawson, leaving this world with the same determination, grace, and humor he demonstrated in every one of his 82 years.

As one of nine children, A.J.’s life was always centered on family and he was most proud of his three children, ten grandchildren (Michael, Lauren, Christopher, Gregory, Ryan, Jeffrey, Mark, Mirelle, Connor, and Aaron) and two great-grandchildren (Hudson and Audrey).

He was born in the Bronx to John and Angelina Sarno and grew up in New York City. While an excellent student, he left High School at age 16 to work in his Uncle’s hardware store to help support his family.

Pride in his country was a strong motivation throughout his life and he enlisted in the Army at 18, where he served in Korea, attended the Army’s Advanced Leadership School, received his GED and began earning college credits. Over time, he was able to balance a demanding career, be a devoted husband and father, and still find time to steadily complete his education. He was always learning, attending countless management programs including at the University of Virginia and Cornell University, ultimately earning his master’s degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University.

After marrying Dee in 1959 and starting their family, he joined the Postal Service. Starting from the bottom, he quickly became a supervisor and joined their management development program,

OBITUARIES sparking a life-long passion for how to make organizations work. His career brought him to Roanoke, Virginia where he served as District Manager for southwestern Virginia and West Virginia, and Syracuse, NY where he served as Postmaster and District Manager for central New York. He completed his career as a trainer at the Postal Service Management Academy in Potomac, Maryland where he loved to see people learn the power of communication and collaboration.

Upon retiring from the Postal Service, A.J. started Creative Quality Concepts, a consulting firm to work with organizations around the country to improve their management and leadership. After a few very successful years, cancer cut his second career short. With the same dogged determination, he demonstrated in every aspect of his life, he fought and beat three different cancers over almost 20 years. He swore that cancer would not beat him and it did not, as he was cancer free when he died.

In his last decades, he devoted himself to family and faith. He built on his strong beliefs of the power of peace and love and cooperation to establish the InterFaith prayer breakfast. Working with Steve Sullivan, they brought together faith leaders and local residents to think deeply about faith, and community and peace in what became a monthly institution in Saratoga.

In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he is survived by his brothers Dominic and Michael and his sister Dolly.

Calling hours and services were Sunday, May 19 followed by burial, with military honors, Monday, May 20 in Greenridge Cemetery, Lincoln Ave. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Community Hospice of Saratoga.

Karl Arnason

STILLWATER — Karl Arnason, 62, died at home on Sunday, May 12, 2019, after a long illness.

He was born on May 24, 1956, in Washington D.C., to Barbara Burt Arnason and Geirmundur Arnason.

Growing up, he lived in Suitland, MD; Monterey, CA; Wethersfield and West Hartford, CT; and Loudonville, NY. He attended Renbrook School in West Hartford, and graduated from Shaker High School in Latham, NY in 1974.

During high school, Karl volunteered with the American

Friends Service Committee — a Quaker organization working for peace and social justice in the United States and around the world — and helped rebuild houses for people in West Virginia. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Wesleyan University, and an MBA from the University of Albany School of Business.

While living in New York City in the 1990s, Karl was a project analyst for the state Banking Department, and then held a similar position at the state Department of Transportation.

Road cycling was a passion for Karl for most of his life. After college, he managed the Downtube Bicycle Works in Albany. In 1982, he was the New York state cycling champion and was named to the national team that same year. He later raced in Belgium, and also promoted several successful cycling races in and around Albany.

After moving to New York City in 1993, he rode and raced frequently in Prospect Park, and was a member of the Deno’s Wonder Wheel Bicycle Racing Team. Karl particularly enjoyed taking group rides to Nyack, and loved mentoring younger riders

and encouraging participation in the sport of cycling.

Karl will also be remembered for his kindness, wit and intellect. He loved art, music, books and foreign films and was especially fond of lively conversation and debate.

He is survived by his wife, Madonna Behen, and their children, Thomas, Elisabeth and Daniel. He is also survived by his brothers, Dan Arnason of Stockholm, Sweden; Paul Arnason, of Guilderland, NY; and John Arnason, of Feura Bush, NY; and by several in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Friends Services Committee, Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs, & Hospice.

S Reverend Harold Watson Smith

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Reverend Harold Watson Smith was born on October 21, 1928, in Hackensack, NJ and died on April 23, 2019, in Saratoga Springs. His father, the Reverend Dr. Harold Norman Smith, and his mother, Lou Watson Smith, were natives of Virginia.

Because Harold’s father served as an ordained elder in the Northern New Jersey Annual Conference of the Methodist Church, Harold and his sister Dorothy spent their earliest years in Methodist parsonages in Hillsdale and Elizabeth, NJ. In 1946, Harold’s father was appointed District Superintendent, and the family moved to Englewood, NJ. Here Harold served as president of both the local YMCA and Methodist Youth organizations and attended Dwight Morrow High School where he was elected president of the high school in his senior year.

Harold attended Princeton University for three years where he was a tenor soloist in the Princeton Glee Club and the Robert Shaw Chorale and then transferred to his father’s alma mater, Randolph Macon College, where he finalized his undergraduate degree. During his college years, Harold was director of a summer YMCA day camp in New Jersey. Harold later earned a Masters of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and became himself an ordained elder in the Northern New Jersey Annual Conference of the Methodist Church.

In 1952, Harold married Camilla Parlin of Englewood, NJ (both Harold and Camilla were students at Union Theological Seminary) and Harold began serving as Assistant Pastor in the Hasbrouck Heights Methodist Church.

Upon graduation from Union Seminary, Harold took his first pastorate in Towaco, NJ. Harold served on the Board of Ministerial Training and Qualifications for the Newark Annual Conference. In this

capacity he served as director of many Conference summer youth retreats. Harold was also a delegate to the World Methodist Council.

In 1965, Harold took sabbatical leave to study theology in Tübingen, Germany. Camilla and their four children accompanied him.

Returning to the United States in 1966, Harold took a position as Ecumenical Chaplain at SUNY Delhi Agricultural and Technical College in Delhi, NY. Harold and his co-chaplain, Father Edward Ryan, were involved in the University Christian Movement, and Harold was elected secretary of the national board, and he also served a term as President of the Delhi Board of Education. During his Delhi College years, Harold taught World Religion and was soloist in Norman Luboff ’s African Mass. Harold also served a term as president of the Board of Education for the local high school, headed the Delaware County Council of Churches and served on the Board of Morristown College in Tennessee.

In these years he participated in theatrical productions both at the college and with the Orpheus Theater community playhouse in Oneonta, NY. He took leading roles in Man of LaMancha, South Pacific and You Can’t Take It with You. He played supporting roles in Damn Yankees and Guys and Dolls.

After his return from sabbatical leave in Korea, in 1981, Harold became a Marriage and Family Councilor and Minister at Large for the Delaware County Council of Churches. He also served interim pastorates in the United Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches of Walton, NY. Harold and Camilla both retired in 1990, and moved to Saratoga Springs where they became active members of the United Methodist Church and the YMCA as well as avid enthusiasts of SPAC. Harold and Camilla were

married 66 years.

Harold is survived by his wife, Camilla Parlin Smith, and their four children, Hyla Smith Skudder (Chris) of Westerville, OH, Heather Smith Xie, Esq. (Dr. Xie Yong) of Hong Kong, H. Nathan Smith (Ina Witek) of Leipzig, Germany, and the Reverend Stephen Blackwood Smith (Theresa) of Malone, NY, and ten grandchildren.

Harold will be remembered as a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Harold’s passion for ecumenical unity, social justice, the care for and healing of precious souls, the promotion of excellence in sacred music and the arts, his dream for world peace, his enjoyment of fine dining, his goodnatured competitiveness on the tennis court, basketball court and golf links, his wit and charm, his indomitable optimism, his humble gratitude, his inexpressible devotion to and undying gratitude toward his wife, Camilla, and his lively hope in the resurrection will live on and will continue to reach others in and through all of us privileged and blessed to have known this great man.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts should be made to the United Methodist Church of Saratoga Springs, NY, or the SRYMCA. A Celebration of Life service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2019 at the United Methodist Church, 175 Fifth Ave., Saratoga Springs.

COURT Stephen K. Matthews, 47, of Gansevoort, was sentenced May 20 to one year in jail on the charge of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the firstdegree, and 15 days in jail on the charge of DWAI. Sentences to run concurrently.

Paul C. Zaroba, 45, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded May 20 to felony DWI. Sentencing scheduled Sept. 9.

POLICE Jordan M. Snyder, 26, of Ballston Spa, was charged May 15 with harassment violation, endangering the welfare of a child - a misdemeanor, and felony criminal contempt.

Snyder is alleged to have harassed another in the course of domestic dispute with children present, and also having violated a criminal court order of protection.

Chad Cruger, 20, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 11 with criminal mischief: intent to damage property.

Robert Risacher, 28, of Argyle, was charged May 10 with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and a missing/improperly displayed license plate.

Colby Zerbe, 22, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 10 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, after being involved in a property damage accident on Henry Street.

Tosha Jeremias, 35, of Corinth, was charged May 7 with felony burglary in the seconddegree, misdemeanor assault, two counts endangering the welfare of a child, and harassment. Jeremias was arraigned in Corinth Town Court and sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $3,000 cash, or $6,000 bail bond.

Stephen J. Miller, 40, of Mechanicville, was charged May 7 with assault in the third-degree, criminal mischief in the fourth-degree – both misdemeanors, and criminal contempt in the firstdegree, a felony, following the issuance of an arrest warrant in Northumberland court. Miller is accused of assaulting another in the course of a domestic dispute, prevented her from calling 911 and violating an order of protection, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office.

Joshua Wilcox, 40, of Milton, was charged with grand larceny in the fourth-degree. Wilcox is alleged to have stolen a debit card from a person known to him.

Earl D. McConchie, 37, of Galway, was charged May 8 with two counts each: aggravated assault upon a child less than 11 years old, aggravated family offense, assault, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, menacing, and endangering the welfare of a child. McConchie is accused of abusing two children, who are the sons of a female acquaintance. Over the course of about 3 months, McConchie is alleged to have repeatedly struck the children, threatened them with a baseball bat, and choked them, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office. The alleged actions occurred while he was watching the children while their mother was at work. The children are 9 and 10 years of age.

POLICE REPORT At 7:42 a.m. Monday, the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office received a call reporting a man dressed in black, wearing a camouflage helmet and carrying a rifle was walking eastbound on Route 146 in the area of Northcrest Drive in Clifton Park. As a result of the report, the Shenedehowa campus was placed on lockout for approximately one hour.

Authorities say a separate witness, who was located a s a result of the investigation, reported observing a man with a similar description in the same area and time frame carrying an umbrella.

The man was not located and the threat was determined to be unfounded, according to authorities.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 12th annual Cantina Kids Fun Run will be held on June 2 at Congress Park in Saratoga Springs. The race starts at 9 a.m.

General registration (including race day) is $20.

The Cantina Kids Fun Run was created by Jeff and Heath Ames, owners of Cantina Mexican restaurant, located at 408 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. Twelve years ago the Ames teamed up with Saratoga Hospital Foundation to give back in appreciation for the lifesaving care their daughter has repeatedly received at Saratoga Hospital.

Since 2008 the event has raised over $490,000 for children’s healthcare at Saratoga Hospital. In the last year almost 4,000 children received treatment in Saratoga Hospital’s Alfred Z. Solomon Emergency Center.

Saratoga County to Participate in Statewide Stop DWI Memorial Day Weekend SARATOGA COUNTY — Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chair Kevin Tollisen announced on May 20 that Saratoga County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crack down on impaired driving.

The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts start on May 24 and will end on May 28. New York State Police, County Sheriffs and municipal law enforcement agencies will collaborate across the state and will be out in force in this coordinated effort to reduce the number of impaired drivingrelated injuries and deaths.

The STOP-DWI Memorial Day Weekend Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOPDWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign also targets the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday Season, Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day. Saratoga County Police agencies encourage everyone to have a sober plan. A mobile application called “Have a Plan” can be downloaded at www. stopdwi.org/mobileapp that allows app users to find a safe ride home.

Saratoga’s Eighth Annual Plant Fair SARATOGA SPRINGS — Every spring since 2011, Murray Penney has been spearheading the annual Plant Fair as a fundraiser for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs. At the age of 81, the long-retired GE engineer — who played a key role on the team that developed the LASIK surgical technique — is back at it, coaching 20 volunteers on the essentials of plant cultivation.

They'll have thousands of heirloom and hybrid tomatoes, tasty vegetables and herbs, and beautiful perennials that have been shown to do well in our climate. Offering more than 60 plant varieties, the event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 and 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 on the church grounds at 624 North Broadway in Saratoga Springs.

Penney takes particular pride in the 20 varieties of heirloom

tomatoes that gardeners will find at this year’s sale. Among those Penney prizes most are Pruden's Purple, Traditional Beefsteak, Mortgage Lifter, and Lucky Tiger.

The prevailing practice of kids selling water for a bucka-bottle to patrons outside the entry gates of the Saratoga Race Course faced elimination at the close of the 2017 summer season when the city’s then-Public Safety Commissioner Chris Mathiesen said he has fielded numerous complaints connected with the issue. Code Enforcement officer Jack Donnelly supplied a letter that cited numerous complaints involving kids obstructing traffic, older folks – not just kids – selling and refilling multiple coolers of water, and families arguing with one another about their “spot,” to the point where the police had to intervene.

The act was never legal to begin with, with no sales tax charted, and no licensing involved.

Vendors are typically required to obtain a license to sell their wares in Saratoga Springs. A 1934 ordinance exempts from the city’s licensing ordinance only the sale of milk, periodicals and newspapers.

“Unless the City Council acts otherwise, this illegal activity is not going to take place in 2018,” Mathiesen said, in late 2017.

A few months later, the council, led by Accounts Commissioner John Franck, worked on a proposal that delivered a compromise to allow the kids to sell water, but prohibit certain areas - such as the publicly congested sidewalk near the main gates on Union Avenue

– where they may do so. Prior to the start of the 2018 meet, the City Council passed a resolution to allow a minor track exemption as part of the city’s Peddling and Vending ordinance.

The exemptions specify designated areas and times where water and pencils may be sold and parents or guardians must file an application with the city’s Department of Accounts to register.

City Adopts Resolution in Support FLAG DAY PARADE: JUNE 8 IN SARATOGA SPRINGS; of Paris Climate Agreement JUNE 13 IN BURNT HILLS

SARATOGA SPRINGS — In a unanimous 5-0 vote, the City Council on May 21 adopted a resolution in support of the Paris Climate Agreement.

“This resolution represents the city’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement, in which nations around the world recognize the threat of global warming and are committed to take action,“ said Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan, who introduced the resolution during the City Council’s meeting Tuesday night.

“From the Spa Solar Park to the in-process plans to ensure city buildings are more energy efficient, the City Council has already taken a variety of proactive steps that recognize and address our concerns about climate change,” said Madigan, adding the futurelooking statement that with the city’s 2020 budget, she intends to increase the city’s financial commitment to sustainability - specifically

referencing a desire to increase the number of electric vehicle charging stations on city-owned property as well as modernizing the city’s fleet of vehicles.

The Spa Solar Park - a 7,992 panel, 2.5-megawatt solar array built on the city’s former Weibel Avenue landfill – was energized in August 2017. As of Feb. 2019, 3.82 million kilowatt hours were generated providing more than $66,000 of budgetary savings for the city.

The resolution, Madigan said, commits the city to continue its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. “The resolution references the creation of a Climate Action Plan and we are currently having internal discussions on how best to proceed,” she said.

The council subsequently unanimously also approved a Local Law to establish a sustainable energy loan program in the city, as well as authorizing the mayor to sign a municipal agreement with the energy improvement corporation (“Energize NY Open C-PACE Financing Program”).

Saratoga County Libertarian Committee to Hold Convention in Saratoga Springs SARATOGA SPRINGS — The organizing committee of the Saratoga County Libertarian Party Convention will hold a convention to organize the county committee, elect officers and adopt bylaws, from noon to

2 p.m. June 16 at the Saratoga Springs Library, 49 Henry St. Larry Sharpe, 2018 gubernatorial candidate, will speak at the convention and discuss the movement and the state of the New York Libertarian Party.

The Paris Agreement was adopted in December 2015, according to the United Nations Treaty Collection. In June 2017, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord - the procedures of which may begin in November 2019. Earlier this month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation aimed at preventing Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accord.

New York has mandated a statewide reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by the year 2050.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — AIM Services, Inc., a non-profit organization that assists people with disabilities in gaining independence, has added a twostory wing to accommodate nearly 2,000 employees under one roof. Previously, AIM Services rented office space on Ballard Road in Wilton.

On May 21, a dedication and ribbon cutting was held to celebrate the new wing at AIM Services which is located at 4227 Route 50 in Saratoga Springs.

Bonacio Construction, Inc. served as the contractor and Phinney Design Group, as the architect. “…We started out today’s dedication with two (employees) that have just moved into the new offices and their story was about how they can just do their job so much better now with the new facility and how thankful they were to be able to have this and give them the tools they needed to do the job,” said Walt Adams, Director of Public Relations at AIM Services.

On staff at AIM Services clinical physicians, including psychologists, nurses and employees called Direct Support People (DSP) that are trained once hired to work with individuals.

AIM Services helps individuals with of all ages, and all degrees of developmental disabilities as well as Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) with all aspects of life.

“From just needing a helping hand around their assisted apartment, to living in a residential

setting, and people who need 24-hour-care,” said Adams.

The agency, which serves Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties, has grown rapidly in the last couple of years, according to Adams.

Their list of services also includes, respite, family education training, community habilitation and employment services.

According to Adams, AIM Services are between 150 to 200 people at any one given time.

AIM Services helps people from Saratoga, Warren and Washington counties, and has recently expanded to Long Island just a few years ago.

and one driver, traveled in a southwestern direction on State Route 30 and failed to stop at the intersection with State Route 30A. The limo traveled across the intersection and into a parking lot where it struck a parked 2015 Toyota Highlander. That Highlander then struck and killed two pedestrians standing nearby.

Authorities are analyzing the airbag control module considered the vehicle’s black box - for post-crash data.

In total, 20 adults were killed - 18 in the limousine, including the driver, as well as two pedestrians. It is the deadliest crash in the U.S. in nine years.

Jillian Ehrenberg : PERSISTENCE REWARDED

“Anything is possible,” says the founder of natural lotions maker Petal + Hive.

for Saratoga TODAY Jillian Ehrenberg’s story proves you can do anything if you put your mind to it. How you can go from the bottom to the top. How sometimes the worst of accidents can turn into the greatest of blessings.

Ehrenberg knew ten years ago that she had the raw materials to create something great with the herbs she grew in the backyard of her home in Galway, which she shares with her husband Jeff and two children. Imagining the healthful products — especially lotions — that she could make with the crops of calendula, rosemary, yarrow, and many more herbs that she was growing, she started mixing them for her own use and giving them names like “Mend” and “Bandage.”

She knew others would love them, too, and so she started imagining the business she could launch, coining the name Petal and Hive. The challenge, she knew, would be to scale up her process and establish a distinct niche in an already-crowded market for natural skincare products.

Starting off as the seed of an idea, Petal + Hive has grown from the ground up just like the plants and flowers Ehrenberg grows in her yard. As her business expanded, she started buying in substantial quantities from other sources. The flower of her enterprise is now blooming, with the opening last fall of a store in Schenectady and a booming online business on the Petal and Hive web site. Her persistence has paid off.

She’s making larger batches because the products are selling so well and working with more retail stores. “This makes it easier for customers to find Petal + Hive products,” she says. “They don’t have to wait for me to set up a booth at a market or festival in order to try my newest formulas.”

A MOVE TO UPSTATE NEW YORK Born in Maine, Ehrenberg moved with her family to Maryland around her second birthday.

Before finishing elementary school, she was on the move again, this time to the east coast of Connecticut, where she would spend most of her childhood.

Finding Connecticut to be a state of “haves and have nots,” she says her family was among the latter, and that instilled in her a determination to work hard at everything she did.

After earning a degree in history and women’s studies at the University of Connecticut, Ehrenberg went into college fundraising and event planning, first in New England then New York City. Upon the birth of their first child, she and her husband, Jeff, moved to Upstate New York in 2006 and settled in the village of Galway in 2012.

Ehrenberg focused on being a mom while simultaneously exploring her passion for making lotions and other skincare products, which she would use herself and share with family and friends.

Having spent his early career as a cosmetic chemist with Fortune 500 companies, Jeff would help in developing promising formulas.

Everything started to snowball in 2015 when she first sold her products at farmers’ markets and craft fairs. “The response was very positive, and I haven’t looked back since,” she says.

But everything took a nearly disastrous turn in January 2017

when, in the process of moving crates, Ehrenberg was hit in the face by a heavy, steel hand truck and suffered a serious concussion.

While her full recuperation would take two months, she was soon back at work.

“The skills I’d learned and the mentality I’d acquired working in New York City helped me manage the business and figure out how to move it forward. If you have enough smarts and enough ability to manage your time and your energy, you really can do anything.”

A TEST OF ARNICA CREAM Ehrenberg found in her recuperation an opportunity to test a new product she was developing -- Arnica Cream, an herbal creation used by athletes as a natural healing agent. Treating herself as a test subject, Ehrenberg saw remarkable results.

However, the accident left unexpected and lasting results as well. “When my brain got to a point where it was noticeably improving and my thoughts started coming back, the wiring was different,” Ehrenberg continues. “I now have a greater sense of self-control and I find myself approaching

tasks differently.”

Along the way, she lost 40 pounds, reduced her intake of sugar and wine, started exercising regularly, and became more confident in every aspect of running her business.”

“Overall, I think I’m a better version of myself now,” she says.

Her business also has become a better version of itself, expanding from online sales to increased exposure through markets and festivals and to a Petal and Hive store at the Clinton Street Mercantile in Schenectady, a new space that invites small businesses to operate their own shops in a single common area.

“It’s really important in the beauty industry for customers to be able to touch and smell a product before purchasing it,” she explains.

TRUST IS ‘CEMENT’ Ehrenberg has made her way to a thriving business with determination, hard work, and persistence ­­— and she’s convinced that anyone can achieve similar results by just setting their minds to it. Trust is the key ingredient.

“When your boss, your coworkers, and your customers

trust you, you’re able to go farther. Doors open. Mistakes are forgiven. When you’re going through a hard time, people step up to support and help you.”

Ehrenberg appreciates the relationships she has fostered while building Petal + Hive, and she is committed to building on the foundation of trust.

“If people know they can trust you, your relationship with them will be on solid ground. Trust is the cement in the foundation of all of the relationships one needs to succeed.”

Hatsational Voted Retailer of the Year

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Hatsational, a hat shop in Saratoga Springs, was named ‘Retailer of the Year’ by The Headwear Association (THA) last month. Hatsational has not one, but three locations on the span of Broadway.

THA is a 111-year-old trade association, the oldest in the fashion industry. Their mission is to promote hats and the headwear

industry internationally, and to foster goodwill and fellowship among those engaged in the headwear industry. Winners are voted based on their stores and volume.

“It’s really about what they feel are the best stores that represent The Headwear Association,” said Joyce Locks, owner of Hatsational.

Hatsational began in 2007 after a trip to the horseraces at Gulf Stream Park in South Florida.

Locks was a licensed horseman

attending a race, hoping to be in the winner’s circle and realized she left her hat at home. There were no hat stores to be found elsewhere.

“So I just came home and I was impassioned,” said Locks.

Hatsational began as a pop-up in Congress Park 12 years ago. Soon Locks was hosting hat salons in her 1890 Queen Anne Victorian home, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and both Belmont and Saratoga Racetracks.

Locks opened her first brick and mortar store in 2013, selling men’s and women’s hats that became a regular stop for people attending the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont and Saratoga races.

“When doing my business, more and more people were enthusiastic; and then they wanted accessories, and they wanted this and they wanted that… That started growing like a weed and it just evolved to what it is today which is

a great business,” Locks said.

“I love what I do,” she added.

Hatsational has expanded to men and women’s dress hats, fascinators, wool hats and caps, as well as accessories and clothing.

“Our inventory is beyond what you could ever imagine, it’s pretty

intense,” said Locks.

Locks still hosts hat shows, derby parties, private parties and kiosks at the Saratoga racetrack.

“People buy hats and they just put them on and feel happy.

So all we do is make them happy,” Locks said.

Maple Avenue 8th Grade Students First Trip to Nation’s Capital

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Three hundred students, eight buses, and five hours of driving led to an educational experience of a lifetime for Maple Avenue Middle School’s eighth graders.

After being inspired by Ballston Spa Middle school (who have taken their eighth-grade students to D.C before), eighth grade teachers at Maple Ave. persisted in seeking approval and support to take their students out of the classroom for a hands-on learning experience. The biggest obstacle faced organizing and executing the trip was gathering the funds; successfully, approximately $20,000 was raised.

"We wanted every student to be able to financially go. We were not excluding anybody,” said Tricia Phillips, an eighth grade English teacher at Maple Ave. “The community really came together. Parents out of nowhere sent a check to be able to sponsor a kid."

Once arriving in D.C the students and teachers ventured throughout the city with their tour guides learning myriads of topics through visiting monuments, memorials and museums.

"Going down there and having a tour guide, and they are educating you. They make it eighth-grade friendly too so you can really understand it," said Phillips.

The visit was worth every fundraiser, and every dime donated as it was not only fulfilling for the teachers, but for the students as well.

"I really liked all of the history I experienced in the museums. You can’t find that in a textbook," said Lily Cubanski, Maple Ave. eighth grade student. "I feel like going to DC made students more excited to learn about history in ways that they wouldn't learn in a classroom.”

Small donations and community involvement played a hand in showing children of Saratoga how exciting and how vast the history of our nation truly is. The teachers are grateful for the opportunity to incorporate the trip into the school curriculum.

"I want to say a huge thank you to all of the people who contributed. There were 8-10 Saratoga businesses who stepped

up to the plate to contribute,” said Phillips. “All the teachers at Ballston Spa were really so giving and willing to give us their ideas and to support and help us, and the superintendent and principal who gave us the green light to be able to make it happen."

BALLSTON SPA — Tuesday, May 22, the Ballston Spa High School technology department unveiled their twoyear-in-the-making “tiny house” project, and their new partnership with the Malta VETERANS Appreciation Program.

The three-years-young program runs entirely through volunteer work and the partnership with the Ballston Spa school district is expected to enable a significant outcome in the years to come. “We’d like to say thank you to all the contributors. This was not a small project by any means. This whole community jumped in on a bandwagon in about 35 seconds of hearing about the project,”

stated Renee Farley, Chairperson of the Malta VETERANS Appreciation Program.

Jared Marcantoni, the technology teacher at Ballston Spa High School and his students spent two years demolishing a 1978 travel trailer and constructing it into a fully functioning tiny house which will serve as a home for a deserving veteran, which was purchased by the Malta VETERANS Appreciation Program.

The Ballston Spa school district will continue to partner with the Malta VETERANS Appreciation Program to provide students with authentic workbased learning opportunities that benefit the community.

Simple Spring Meals

However, a walk through the Wednesday or Saturday farmers’ market is all you need to create a healthy, cost-effective spread that's absolutely delicious.

Dinner is considered by some to be the main meal of the day. Following an ingredient list of seasonal offerings from local farms is a great way to cook creatively and simply while avoiding processed foods.

Here are three dinner dishes that we sourced at the farmers’ market.

The goal was to combine spring offerings such as asparagus, fresh herbs, and root vegetables with a protein. The cooking methods were also streamlined to be made in little time and with easy cleanup. We love ‘one pan’ meals! Convenient, yet, hearty and healthy.

Roasted Asparagus, Sausage, and Garlic Potatoes One Pan

Steak and Veggies with Garlic Herb Butter One Pan

Cook & Prep Time: 30 minutes | Serves: 4 INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 5 tablespoons unsalted butter*, divided • 1 clove garlic*, minced • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley* leaves

• 11/2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme* leaves • 11/2 teaspoons fresh lemon zest • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 (11/2-inch) thick New York strip steak* • 1 shallot*, minced

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons butter, garlic, parsley, thyme, lemon zest, salt and pepper; set aside.

2. Season steaks (room temperature) with salt and pepper, to taste.

Cook & Prep Time: 40 minutes Serves: 4

3. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Place the steaks in the middle of the skillet and cook until a dark crust

• 1 pound fresh asparagus*, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces • 8 ounces mushrooms* (we used Namekos), sliced

4. Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in the skillet. Add shallot, asparagus, and mushrooms.

Cook, stirring occasionally until mushrooms are tender and browned and asparagus is crisptender and bright green, about 3-4 minutes.

5. Serve immediately with steaks and butter mixture.

• 1 pound potatoes* (any kind) • 4 carrots*, sliced into thin strips • Salt and cracked pepper • 1/4 cup olive oil*, separated • 1 Tablespoon fresh thyme*

• 1 large yellow onion* • 1 package sausage* (of choice) • 2 cloves garlic*, minced

• 1 Tablespoon fresh basil*

• 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan* or Pecorino*

• 2 cups asparagus*

• Optional: fresh parsley*

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a very large sheet pan with parchment paper or foil for easier clean-up (optional).

2. Halve the baby potatoes (or cube if they are larger) and peel carrots and slice thin. Sprinkle the herbs and salt and pepper onto the carrots and potatoes and mix together.

3. Place the halved potatoes and sliced carrots on the sheet pan.

Pour 2 tablespoons olive oil and toss to combine and place in the oven for 20 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, prepare the asparagus by trimming the ends and cutting into 2-inch pieces. Thinly slice the yellow onion. Coin the sausage.

5. Remove the potatoes and carrots from the oven and using a spatula push them to one side of the pan. On the other side add in the chopped asparagus, sliced onion, sausage, and minced garlic.

Add the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil and toss to combine.

Then, toss those ingredients with the potatoes and carrots.

6. Bake for another 10-15 minutes or until the vegetables are roasted to your desired preference. Top the dish with freshly grated parmesan and fresh parsley as desired and enjoy!

One Pan

Chicken Breast and Carrots

Cook & Prep Time: 1 hour | Serves: 4 INGREDIENTS:

• Olive oil*

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 1 shallot*, thinly sliced

• 4 (10 - 12 oz.) bone-in split chicken breasts*, trimmed • 2¼ teaspoons kosher salt, divided

• ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes • 1 ½ pounds carrots*, peeled, sliced on bias, ¼ inch thick

• 2 teaspoons lemon juice

• ½ cup water

• 3 teaspoons fresh mint*, minced

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

2. Carefully separate the chicken breast from the meat. Peel back skin, leaving skin attached at top and bottom of breast and ribs. Sprinkle 1½ teaspoons salt evenly over chicken. Lay skin back in place. Poke holes in fat deposits in skin of breasts. Coat with olive oil.

3. Place chicken, skin side down in 12-inch ovensafe skillet and set over medium-high heat. Cook until chicken is well browned, 7 to 9 minutes.

Carefully flip chicken and transfer skillet to oven.

Roast the chicken for 30 to 50 minutes (chicken internal temperature reaches 170 degrees).

4. Transfer chicken to plate. Save the liquid in the skillet and add shallot, red pepper flakes, and ¾ teaspoon salt to skillet and cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally and scraping up browned bits, until moisture has evaporated. Add carrots and water and bring to simmer. Cover skillet reducing heat to medium and cook until carrots are tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Uncover and continue to cook, stirring frequently until sauce begins to coat the carrots. Add lemon juice and 1½ teaspoons mint with any accumulated chicken juices to skillet and toss to combine. Season with salt to taste.

Transfer to a serving dish, top with chicken and remaining mint.

Cuts like a Knife

my Foodie Friends.

It is Memorial Day weekend and it is a time of remembering those men and women who gave their lives for America. My father served in WWII fighting on the beaches of Normandy; and my father-inlaw served 22 years in the army, training and commanding young recruits. Our parents come from a period that is called “the greatest generation.” The stories that both my father and father-in-law have given over the years about their time in the war or in the service, and the stories both my mother and mother-in-law have told, reflect an incredible period of our history. As I reflect on this holiday, I think about my father at age 22 and realized he was in England getting ready for D-Day on Normandy Beach. It must have a scary time for my Dad. I don’t know for sure because he would never talk about it. The only thing he would say,

and this is his Irish sense of humor talking, was “there were many bars in France and Belgium that had banned me for life.”

I lost my father nine years ago.

Among the precious possessions that were handed off to us were his knives and a sharpening wheel that I use for knife repair. As a gift to each of my four other siblings, I sharpened and restored my father’s knives giving each one of my brothers and sisters knives that they could use and remember my father through each day as they prepared their meals.

Knife sharpening is a service that I offer at Compliments to the Chef. Did you know that a sharp knife leads to fewer injuries? It does sound contradictory that a sharp knife could cause less injuries. However, a sharp knife means you make fewer cuts and do not have to work as hard as you would to cut when using a dull knife. The law of averages shows that there is less of a chance of cutting yourself with a sharp knife then with a dull knife. A sharp knife also cuts more precisely with less chance of slippage. Overall; a sharp knife promotes better cutting techniques. Even the finest knives will dull with regular use, but periodic sharpening will restore the blade’s keen edge. A dull knife requires greater force, tears at food, tires the hand and increases the odds of cutting yourself. Dull knives cause infinitely worse and more frequent injuries than sharp ones for a few reasons. Dull knives require more pressure to use,

Congregation Shaara Tfille/The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs Presents ‘The Isle of Klezbos’ Congregation Shaara Tfille/ The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs will present a return engagement of The Isle of Klezbos on Sunday, June 3 at 2 p.m. It will be held in their synagogue at 84 Weibel Ave. as part of the 2019 Saratoga Jewish Cultural Festival. Sponsored by a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeast NY, the cost is $5 and free for students with ID. A dessert reception will follow the performance. The Isle of Klezbos is a soulful, fun-loving, all-gal Klezmer group who combine tradition with playful irreverence and deep respect by performing a repertoire that ranges from rambunctious to neotraditional folk dance, mystical melodies, Yiddish swing and retro tango, late Soviet-era Jewish drinking song, re-grooved standards and genre-defying originals. Based out of New York City, they have toured from Vienna to Vancouver.

Formed in 1998 by drummer/ leader Eve Sicular, a Harvardeducated film historian, the Isle of Klezbos features alumnae of Juilliard, Eastman, Manhattan and Berklee Schools of Music.

They have been honored by multiple awards from the New York State Council on the Arts, OUTmusic, NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Sparkplug Foundation. All of the musicians are in other bands and orchestras and several also play together in Metropolitan

Klezmer - an octet formed in 1994. They have performed at Seattle’s Bumbershoot, St. Louis’ Edison Theater, Vienna’s Porgy & Bess, Public Theater NYC, BAM Café, Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturday, Berkeley’s Jewish Music Festival, Merkin Hall, Michigan Womyn’s Music Fest, National Yiddish Book Center, City Winery and 92YTribeca. The Isle of Klezbos have played on college campuses, conducted Yiddish film lectures and have held residencies at Stanford, Skidmore, Sarah Lawrence, Vassar and others.

Their premiere at Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts was recorded live for their CD, Live from Brooklyn which was named among NY Music Daily’s Top 50 Albums of the Year in 2014. Recent highlights: Denver debut at JAAMM Festival, headlining Oberlin Spring Folk Fest and multi-media concert The Celluloid Closet of Yiddish Film at NYC’s Center for Jewish History (YIVO Institute/American Jewish Historical Society/American Jewish Music Society, Pride Season event co-sponsors). Headlining both San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens Festival and Portland OR’s Alberta Rose Theatre for West Coast 20th anniversary summer premieres, the band returns to California for Chanukah season tour from Sonoma to Palm Springs, then made a first-time Florida splash at The Arts Garage in February 2019.

They packed houses at Joe’s Pub for KulturfestNYC as commissioned

by Bill Bragin and at the legendary Broadway supper club Feinstein’s/54 Below – the first Klezmer group ever invited to that Broadway stage.

The group’s Chamber Music America conference World Music & Jazz showcases led to other premiere events.

They have enjoyed collaborations with artists from Grammy-nominated Scissor Sisters (studio sessions), performer/playwright Lisa Kron (Fun Home), artist Kiki Smith at The Museum at Eldridge Street and singer/songwriter Jill Sobule for whose Music From Yentl Isle of Klezbos bandmates performed at Lincoln Center. The group is featured in bandleader Eve Sicular’s own musical documentary theater hit J. Edgar Klezmer: Songs from My Grandmother’s FBI Files which enjoyed a sold-out Off-Off Broadway run with glowing New York Times review from opening night at HERE Arts. Recent special appearances: A Letter to Harvey Milk opening night party house band; World Science Festival surprise guest artists in honor of Alan Alda at Jazz at Lincoln Center gala; and Cinema Arts Centre featured music artists with SNL legend Alan Zweibel.

May Day for Hunger supports the Saratoga EOC food programs including the Food Pantry, Soup Kitchen, Mobile Food Pantry, Rural Food Delivery, Summer Lunches and

Thanksgiving Baskets. Last year, Saratoga EOC provided over 115,000 meals to neighbors in need, more than 80,000 of those through the food pantry and another 18,000 through the soup kitchen.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A rollicking piano, nicely harnessed by a sturdy rhythm section, channels alongside the vocal sass of Annie Rosen and launches into Tommy Johnson’s 1928 “Big Road Blues,” introducing the sixth album by Capital/Saratoga region favorites Annie and the Hedonists.

Produced by Grammy award winner Joel Moss and recorded at the legendary Dreamland Studio in Woodstock, the new album - “Bring it On Home” – features 12 vintage blues and jazz tracks from the 1920s through the 1950s, as well as a trio of original contemporary blues songs.

On Friday, May 31 the band will stage a record release party at Caffe Lena.

The Hedonists - comprised of core members Annie and Jonny Rosen, Donald Young and Peter Davis - are accompanied by drummer Jerry Marotta, who spent two decades dividing his time between recording and touring with Peter Gabriel, Daryl Hall and John Oates, Tears for Fears, Joan Armatrading, Paul McCartney, and countless others. With “Bring it On Home,” the band is amiably assisted by guest musicians John Sebastian (yes, that one), Dave Davies (no, not that one), and Randy Reinhart.

Capital Region Heart Walk and Run June 2; Thousands Expected to Attend

ALBANY — The Capital Region Heart Walk and Run takes place Sunday, June 2, at the University at Albany, located at 1400 Washington Ave. Dr. Sulagna “Suzie” Mookherjee’s and Karen Carpenter Palumbo will lead the event as co-chairs. Mookherjee is assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Albany Medical College and is director of the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program.

and CEO of Vanderheyden for seven years, prior to which she was commissioner of the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (OASAS), and vice president of the American Cancer Society.

“The Heart Walk and Run is a great event that draws people from every walk of life and every age group,” Mookherjee said, in a statement. “It’s a moving day, it’s an empowering day, and it’s a day that can make a huge difference in everyone’s lives.”

“Thousands of people come to the Heart Walk and Run,” Palumbo said. “We learn a lot, we laugh, we shed a few tears, and we improve our own health by taking a heart-healthy walk. It’s really all about the community.”

LOCAL SUMMER THEATRE WORKSHOP GETS GRANT CORINTH — Adirondack Center Stage (ACS) has received a grant from the International Paper Foundation for their 2019 Summer Theatre Workshop to use toward the costs of their scripts and materials. This is especially important for ACS this year, as the excess funds they raised in 2018 were retained by their 2018

sponsor. This resulted in a zero balance for the ACS to begin their program this year.

The Summer Theatre Workshop is an intensive fiveweek theater program for youth ages 8-18, bringing a high-quality production to Northern Saratoga County on the last weekend in July for the past 10 years. The program

Exploration of Water Through the Lenses of Art, Music and Nature

“Foreverly” is based on the true story of Helen Gregg, the daughter of Irish immigrant parents raised in the miseries of Hell’s Kitchen during the Great Depression, and Raymond Stephenson, an aspiring World War II B-17 pilot from the struggling city of Ironton, Ohio. They share a brief yet extraordinary life together, until the war tears them apart.

The screenplay title was inspired by Jeff Brisbin, composer, lyricist and performer who wrote a ballad bearing the same title.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — SPAC’s second annual speaker series will return on the amphitheater stage June 11 to explore water and its role as the defining essence of Saratoga Springs, its inspiration on music and art, and its primal place in nature and the environment.

The series begins June 11 with composer Kenneth Frazelle, who will examine water through the lens of music and art with his talk entitled In the Flow: Music and Water.

Sandra Postel, director of the Global Water Policy Project and author of “Replenish: The Virtuous Cycle of Water and Prosperity,” will be featured Aug. 1 and the series will culminate with author Charles Fishman one of the most provocative and

inspiring voices on water issues in the last few years and the author of “The Big Thirst,” on Sept. 12.

“Inspired by Saratoga Springs’ historic and psychic connection to its curative mineral springs, SPAC presents a speaker series that focuses on the lifeblood of our world…water,” Elizabeth Sobol, SPAC’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “The speaker series is also part of our expanded vision to include spoken word in SPAC’s programming, inviting thought leaders, writers and artists of all kinds to our stage for probing and provocative experiences that complement our classical programming,” Sobol added.

MUSIC FESTIVAL LAKE GEORGE — The fifth annual Adirondack Independence Music Festival takes place at the Charles R. Wood Festival Commons, Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1. The twoday, multi-band event will feature several premiere touring bands currently on the festival circuit.

This year’s event will feature performances by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong (2 sets), Pink Talking Fish, Ryan Montbleau Band, Everyone Orchestra, Marco Benevento, Gubbulidis & Friends, Kung Fu, Lucid, Hayley Jane & The Primates, Midnight North, Barika, Deadgrass, People’s Blues of Richmond, The Big Takeover, Hartley’s Encore, Eggy, Funktional Flow, Annie in the Water and The New Motif , with one more headliner to be announced in late July.

Music at the festival commons is scheduled to go from 12:30 p.m. – 11 p.m. across two alternating stages, followed by late night performances taking place at King Neptune’s Pub until about 3 a.m. Admission to the King Neptune’s shows is free to festival attendees 21+ and music at the festival commons is open to people of all ages. Last year's event drew about 3,500 people,

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Four years ago the Saratoga Springs Little League (SSLL) became more inclusive as they added the Challenger Division, for players of varying ages who have physical and intellectual challenges.

The Little League Challenger Division was nationally established in 1989. Robert Kelly and Paul Herbert, two parents and coaches of the Challenger Team played a hand in spearheading the nationally recognized Challenger Division to be a part of the SSLL. Just as the program started – with invested parents – is how it continues to run. Many of the coaches are not only volunteers, but parents as well. Having the parents be very hands on is unique to a team such as this.

“With the parents there, there is a lot of coaching and counseling, helping them, keeping their helmets on to be safe. Always talking to them, being close to them...whereas on a typical team a coach is here, and a player is over there and they’re screaming at them - we’re right on the field with them,” said Kelly.

Before the games, players from other teams in the league will assist in warm-ups and teaching the Challenger players some techniques.

The kids have a bit more freedom on this team from the positions they play, to how long they play.

“The biggest thing I try to keep in mind is that we want the kids to have fun and that each kid has different skill sets, so we try to work with each kid individually to help them to develop their skill sets or to at least make them feel part of the team,” said Herbert.

The Challenger team has had some players move up to a typical team in the league – an opportunity which Kelly believes was able to happen because the child was able to get their initial try at baseball through the Challenger team.

Friday, May 31, beginning at 7 p.m. the Challenger Division game, ‘Under the Lights’ will be held at the West Side Rec Fields.

“We are so proud of our Challenger Division and all the volunteers and parents who make it possible,” said Derrick Legall, President of SSLL. “Please come out and support them as they experience this well-deserved honor under the lights.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Nick Winslow, 17, switched from a football to a baseball and hasn’t looked back.

Saratoga Central Catholic’s catcher began playing baseball when he was eight years old.

“I was playing football, but my father wanted me to try baseball, so I gave it a try and I fell in love with it,” said Winslow.

“Just the feeling of getting a base hit and making a good play feels unlike any other sport.”

Winslow’s father is not only the reason he began playing the sport he loves so much; his father is his biggest inspiration off the field too.

“He’s a really hard-working guy and constantly helps us - my family - and I just want to work as hard he does,” said Winslow Originally Winslow was a first baseman, but when the team

was short on catchers, Winslow stepped up to the plate. Low and behold, turns out he loves being the team catcher the most.

“Catching you’re involved in every single pitch, every single game,” said Winslow. “It’s just really fun, cause on the other positions you’re not involved in every play, but catching, you’re constantly in the game.”

Winslow is following in his father’s footsteps with his dedication to his on the field performance

and supporting his team. After his regular practices, Winslow could be found practicing for at least an hour every day, perfecting his hits and keeping up with his defensive skills – which he says may be his biggest strength on the field.

Throughout the season Winslow has kept his head in the game and took a lot of pride in putting his best foot forward for his team.

“I thought they were some important games. We played

some really tough teams, so i had to bring my game up a little,” said Winslow. “I tried my hardest.”

All his efforts certainly do not go un-noticed, especially by his father who Winslow says is his biggest supporter.

“He’s at all the games, even pointless games that no one should really be at, he’s always there supporting me and cheering on.”

Winslow hopes to continue to play baseball in college when he graduates next year.

The Camp Saratoga 5K Trail Series SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Trail Series will be held Mondays June 24, July 8, July 22, August 5 and August 19 at 6:15 p.m. at Camp Saratoga, Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park. 11th Annual Dragon the Dads Family 5K The Greenfield Elementary School HSA presents their annual “Dragon the Dads” family 5K on June 15 at Saratoga State Park. Kicking off Father’s Day weekend, the event will feature a 5K suitable for the whole family, a kid’s 1-mile race, and a short dash for the youngest racers. Saratoga Honda will be on-site with a Father’s Day craft table for kids while they wait.

Saratoga Recreation Department Mark your calendars for another summer of fun with the Recreation Department! A variety of engaging sporting activities are available, including baseball, boys and girls basketball, boxing, field hockey, ice skating, running, skateboarding, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.

• Swing For the Fences: The Saratoga Springs Recreation Department is teaming up again this summer with American Legion Baseball for its annual clinic. The clinic will be held July 1, 3, and 5 (no July 4) from 8:30 a.m. -Noon. Everyone age 5-14 is welcome to attend.

• Summer Running Program: Spend your summer running with Saratoga’s acclaimed coaches! The summer running program will take place July 1-August 17. Various days and times are available for boys, girls, and families.

• Meet At the Net: Develop your volleyball skills and learn rules and strategy at our summer clinic. This clinic will be held July 1-July 5 (no July 4) from 5:308:30 p.m. Everyone age 8-14 is welcome to attend.

• Soccer Programs: Little Kickers, Big Kickers, and Soccer Leagues will run through June 22. NEW! The Adult Soccer League will be held Saturdays through June 22. Little Kickers is a parent/child activity that teaches soccer basics. Big Kickers reinforces skills and introduces participants to games. League play is separated into grade appropriate divisions. The Adult Soccer League is informal but will follow FIFA laws.

Saratoga Regional Saratoga Lions Club Memorial Day Weekend YMCA Recognizes Duathlon & 5K Run/Walk Disabled Veterans with Special Membership Rate

The 15th Annual Saratoga Lions Club Duathlon (5k Run/15k Bike/5k Run) event and a separate

5k Run/Walk will occur on Sunday, May 26, of Memorial Day Weekend.

All proceeds go to the Saratoga Lions Clubs’ ongoing effort to help those with visual and hearing impairments along with aiding the community-at-large.

We also celebrate our Veterans with our Honor-a-Vet program.

Cost for the 5k is a $30 fee that includes a free t-shirt and refreshments. Cost for the Duathlon varies; fee includes free t-shirt, refreshments and awards.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Regional YMCA (SRYMCA) announces special membership rates to honor U.S. Military Veterans and their families. Veterans with a service-connected disability are eligible to receive up to 75% off membership rates at all branches of the Saratoga Regional YMCA. In addition, SRYMCA continues to offer a reduced rate for military personnel without a disability.

The association is pleased to have these opportunities to show its gratitude to those who have served our country and community.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — This year, the Albany Capitols hockey team has spent countless days practicing at the Weibel Avenue Ice Rink and are preparing to venture overseas to represent the United States at the EuroChem Cup, one of the world’s leading ice hockey tournaments for 10 to 12-year-old players.

On the team are three players from Saratoga County.

The players depart Thursday, May 23 and will return within a week.
