AMERICAN LEGION TURNS 100 AND HONORS SPA CITY NATIVE by Marissa Gonzalez Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Keith Koster is life-long resident of Saratoga Springs, a three-time cancer survivor, a Navy veteran and has climbed all of the Adirondack Mountain’s 46 peaks, twice. This month Koster is pictured on the front page of the American Legion’s monthly magazine celebrating the organization’s 100-year-anniversary.
Notes From City Hall by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS – The City Council approved moving forward with an arts associated initiative it first launched last year. With an eye on promoting Saratoga Springs as a worldwide destination for arts and culture, the city in 2018 awarded a $14,000 economic development grant. The funding targeted support for the Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s hiring of a public relations firm to publicize the city as a cultural hotspot beyond the Capital Region.
For its 2019 program, the council approved $18,000 in funding the partnership between the city and SPAC - to be matched by the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The goal, said Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan, was “having some skin in the game” regarding cultural tourism, which statistically brings a 60 percent larger financial return to communities compared to the traditional leisure traveler, SPAC President and CEO Elizabeth Sobol explained. “It’s really weird reading a story about yourself but yea it’s been pretty neat. A lot of people reaching out on Facebook and stuff like that,” Koster said. In the last year, Koster has been climbing the Adirondack high peaks with the American Legion’s flag in hand. He plans to finish all 46 peaks before or on March 15. Koster says he was given the idea by a friend to pay tribute to the legion’s 100 years. See Story pg. 11
