It’s not summer in Saratoga until the strains of classical music start pouring out of Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC).

Packs a Punch

Ballet and classical music enthusiasts will have more than enough to swing their air batons to this season with a sprawling slate of familiars such as virtuosic cellist (and last year’s saratoga living cover star) Yo-Yo Ma; the New York City Ballet (NYCB), which is celebrating its 75th anniversary with an exciting program of crowd favorites and SPAC premieres; and the Philadelphia Orchestra—which will balance spectacular premieres and artist debuts, including that of Emmy-, Grammy-, and Tony-winning Broadway superstar Audra McDonald.

“There’s so much I’m excited about, it’s a little hard to keep it concise,” says Elizabeth Sobol, SPAC President and CEO. “For the NYCB, the SPAC Premieres program is amazing, but I’m thrilled we’ll also get to see Justin Peck’s first evening-length ballet, Copland Dance Episodes.” From July 18-22, the NYCB will return with the full company and a roster of more than 90 dancers under Artistic Director Jonathan Sta ord. The season kicks o with “NYCB On and O Stage,” an accessible, peak-behind-the-curtain teaser, featuring the best excerpts from the week’s ballet programs. “[This] has become an important part of our e orts to bring new people to experience ballet in an inviting way,” says Sobol. “New for this year, the celebratory evening will culminate in a dance party in the Hall of Springs.” Following this is two nights (July 1920) of “SPAC Premieres,” spotlighting new and contemporary works from

around the globe, such as Play Time by Gianna Reisen, which is set to music by hip-hop icon Solange Knowles, and Love Letter (on shu e) by Kyle Abraham, with music by Grammywinning English singer-songwriter James Blake, among others. There will also be two performances of a di erent SPAC premiere (July 20 and 22): the aforementioned Copland Dance Episodes by New York-based, Tony-winning choreographer, director and dancer Justin Peck. This original “full-evening” work is set to four of Copland’s most famous compositions: Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, Fanfare for the Common Man and

“I’m very much looking forward to returning to lovely Saratoga this summer to perform with the incomparable Philadelphia Orchestra. SPAC is such a special place in the summer, and I can’t wait to sing my Broadway favorites from Ellington, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gershwin, Sondheim and more.”

Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Emmy- and Grammy-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Also returning, for the first time in a decade, is renowned violinist Gil Shaham, who will lead a special SPAC premiere (August 16) of Vivaldi’s beloved violin concerti, The Four Seasons. In

Rodeo Closing out the dance season (July 21-22) are ballet classics Swan Lake (Tchaikovsky/Balanchine), Fancy Free (Bernstein/Robbins) and Firebird (Stravinsky/Balanchine and Robbins).

“There’s always something special about performing outside at this wonderful venue that has been NYCB’s summer home for so many years,” says NYCB principal dancer Mira Nadon.

“I’m particularly excited to bring Justin Peck’s Copland Dance Episodes to Saratoga. The choreography, music, costumes and lighting have all come together in such a beautiful way, and I’m so excited for the Saratoga audiences to get to experience it.” Next up, the Philadelphia Orchestra is packing quite a musical punch as well, with homecomings from Music

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our 2023 season!

And thank you for being a part of SPAC’s continued transformation here at the nexus of human-made and natural beauty.

Not just an amphitheater, SPAC is a refuge, a place of healing, a place where all are welcome, and all cultures are celebrated. In our mission to connect people to people, and people to our planet, we acknowledge the profound importance of beauty and art in the creation of a just world.

This summer, in recognition of the physical world that cradles us, we celebrate Earth. The Earth not only inspires creators of music, poetry and dance, but literally provides essential elements of creation: the wood and metals of musical instruments, the materials of the amphitheater itself, pigments derived from the earth, paper from trees filled with words and notes, and the very air that is breathed into instruments and, through which, sublime vibration is carried to human ears.

Highlighting this exploration on our stage with The Philadelphia Orchestra, is the SPAC premiere of Vespers of the Blessed Earth, which references humanity’s impact on the natural world by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and environmental advocate, John Luther Adams.  In presenting this thematic strand, we hope to encourage connection, curiosity, and collective reflection on our place in this world.

Dear SPAC Supporters,

Thank you for joining us for SPAC’s 2023 Summer season. To say we would not be here without you is not an exaggeration. Each year we need to raise half of our budget in addition to ticket sales. Your attendance and support are the life blood that keeps SPAC open.

Under the extraordinary leadership of our President and CEO, Elizabeth Sobol, the SPAC team continues to transform the beautiful grounds, our stages and programming both inside and beyond our gates. With new spring, fall and holiday programming in the Spa Little Theatre as well as expanded offerings in culinary, literary and visual arts, we are thrilled to be able to invite everyone to experience SPAC all year long.

Our commitment to arts education has grown by leaps and bounds with more than 120 partnerships with local schools and non-profit organizations. The School of the Arts in the Lewis A. Swyer studios offers an average of 30 classes each week for students from ages two to eighty! We also provide online programs. Starting with 5,500 students in 2016, we now reach 50,000 students! The number of classes and events offered annually increased from 400 to 1,500 in the past year! Guiding students toward self-empowerment through artistic discovery, the education department continues an intensified focus on inclusive and accessible programs. For the first time this fall, we look forward to collaborating with AIM services and Saratoga Bridges to develop and expand these programs.

With so much appreciation for your attendance and support,

Not only performing arts, but also visual arts, literary arts, culinary arts, healing arts and beyond.

We’re proud to present these initiative-driven programs and special events featuring guest artists and speakers within our year-round calendar of programming.

COPLAND DANCE EPISODES

Justin Peck’s Copland Dance Episodes is Peck’s 23rd piece for NYCB and his first full-evening work. The ballet for 30 dancers in 22 episodes is set to four scores by Aaron Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man, Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, Appalachian Spring, and Billy the Kid, and is performed without intermission. Copland Dance Episodes features set design by celebrated artist Jeffrey Gibson, costumes by former NYCB dancer Ellen Warren, and lighting by Peck’s frequent collaborator Brandon Stirling Baker.

FANCY FREE

In 1944, Jerome Robbins—then a young dancer with Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre)—choreographed his first ballet, a collaboration with up-and-coming composer Leonard Bernstein. The two wanted to bring a modern American sensibility to ballet, and they hit on the perfect concept: sailors on shore leave in New York City, a common sight in those days. The premiere performance of Fancy Free has become legendary, with two dozen curtain calls for the stunned cast, composer, and choreographer, and raves from the bowled-over critics. Fancy Free was the inspiration for a full-length musical, On the Town, that was also a great success, and Robbins and Bernstein went on to collaborate on another Broadway classic, West Side Story. Of course, each man had many subsequent successes; Bernstein became the music director of the New York Philharmonic and a prolific composer and conductor, and Robbins was the creative force behind many enduring Broadway hits, as well as the choreographer of some of New York City Ballet’s core works. But it was Fancy Free that put Robbins on the map as someone who had a clear eye for creating compelling movement, a deft hand at telling a story, and a creative vision that was unique in the world of theater.

FIREBIRD

In 1910, following the first successful season of the Ballets Russes in Paris, Serge Diaghilev commissioned a full-length ballet score from a young composer, Igor Stravinsky. The result—Firebird—was Stravinsky’s first ballet score, and a major critical and popular success for Diaghilev, Stravinsky, and its choreographer Michel Fokine. New York City Ballet first presented Firebird in 1949 at City Center, with choreography by George Balanchine, scenery and costumes by the painter Marc Chagall, and Maria Tallchief in the leading role. Because Balanchine chose to use the orchestral suite, rather than the complete three-act score, he simplified the story and emphasized the mythical elements of the Firebird’s character. In 1970, a new production was mounted to adapt to the larger proportions of the New York State Theater (now the David H. Koch Theater). The costumes, of extraordinary complexity and fantasy, were created by Karinska from Chagall’s original designs. Chagall expressed great pleasure at the devotion and inventiveness with which Karinska interpreted his watercolor sketches in textiles, plastics, paint, and mineral materials. The choreography represents a collaboration between Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, the latter being responsible for the episode with Kastchei the Wizard and his subjects. Balanchine entirely redesigned his dances in light of the designs, conceiving the ballet as Chagall accompanied by music and dance. In 1972 and 1980 Balanchine again changed his choreography (as well as the costume) for the character of the Firebird to suit the qualities of the ballerina cast in the leading role.

LITURGY

Arvo Pärt, an Estonian composer born in 1935, has created several versions of Fratres, including this one, for violin, strings, and percussion. The title of the piece, which means “Brothers,” and the religious solemnity of the music bring to mind services in a medieval monastery. Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon has frequently been drawn to the music of contemporary composers. He used Pärt’s music for another piece, After the Rain, and created a trio of ballets set to music by György Ligeti, a Hungarian composer who died in 2006. Like these composers, Wheeldon uses a classical foundation to create works that are firmly modern in their feel and resonance.

LOVE LETTER (ON SHUFFLE)

Following The Runaway (2018) and the films Ces noms que nous portons (2020) and When We Fell (2021), Love Letter (on shuffle) is Kyle Abraham’s fourth work for New York City Ballet. The ballet for 16 dancers features music by London-born singer, songwriter, and producer James Blake. Love Letter (on shuffle) premiered at the 2022 Fall Fashion Gala with costumes designed by fashion designer Giles Deacon, and lighting by Dan Scully.

PLAY TIME

Gianna Reisen’s Play Time is her third work for New York City Ballet, following Composer’s Holiday (2017) and Judah (2018). Play Time features a commissioned score by Grammy-Award winning singer, songwriter, and visual artist Solange Knowles, her first for a ballet company. The ballet for 10 dancers, which premiered at the 2022 Fall Fashion Gala, includes costumes by fashion designer Alejandro Gómez Palomo for Palomo Spain, featuring Swarovski crystals, and lighting by Mark Stanley.

SCHERZO FANTASTIQUE

Set to Stravinsky’s eponymous score, Scherzo Fantastique premiered at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in July 2016. The ballet for 10 dancers is Soloist and Resident Choreographer Justin Peck’s eleventh work for New York City Ballet. Scherzo Fantastique features scenic design by French Brooklyn-based artist Jules de Balincourt, costumes by Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung, and lighting by Mark Stanley.

SWAN LAKE

George Balanchine preferred The Sleeping Beauty to Swan Lake, the first of Tschaikovsky’s three full-length ballets, so when asked by Morton Baum of the City Center of Music and Drama, both Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein hesitated at staging Swan Lake for New York City Ballet, and finally did so only as insurance that they would be allowed to mount a more daring piece in the future. Balanchine’s one-act version, which premiered at City Center in 1951 with Maria Tallchief and André Eglevsky in the leading roles, is based on Lev Ivanov’s choreography for Act II, and uses music from both Acts II and IV, the lakeside acts. Balanchine often praised the almost forgotten genius of Ivanov, whose musicality served as an inspiration for the young choreographer. NYCB’s first production of Swan Lake was designed by Cecil Beaton, who created calligraphic scenery and costumes, white ink on black backgrounds, following pen and ink drawings by 16th century German painters. In 1964, with NYCB’s move to Lincoln Center, Rouben Ter-Arutunian created a new set for the larger stage, which replaced Beaton’s designs with a painted landscape. In 1986 the production was redesigned once more by Alain Vaes who created an icy landscape instead of the traditional Gothic lakeside, and dressed the corps of swans in black, which Balanchine may have been planning in 1981 when he mysteriously ordered 400 yards of black tarlatan. When asked to justify this odd request, Balanchine merely said, “There are black swans as well.”

ABOUT NEW YORK CITY BALLET

New York City Ballet is one of the foremost dance companies in the world, with a roster of spectacular dancers and an unparalleled repertory. The Company was founded in 1948 by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, and it quickly became world-renowned for its athletic and contemporary style. Jerome Robbins joined NYCB the following year and, with Balanchine, helped to build the astounding repertory and firmly establish the Company in New York.

New York City Ballet owes its existence to Lincoln Kirstein, who envisioned an American ballet where young dancers could be trained and schooled under the guidance of the greatest ballet masters. When he met George Balanchine in London in 1933, Kirstein knew he had found the right person for his dream. Balanchine traveled to America at Kirstein’s invitation, and in 1934 the two men opened the School of American Ballet, where Balanchine trained dancers in an innovative style and technique that matched his idea of a new, unmannered classicism.

In 1946 Kirstein and Balanchine formed Ballet Society and presented their new company at New York’s City Center of Music and Drama, which had been founded by Fiorello H. LaGuardia, Newbold Morris, and Morton Baum. After seeing a Ballet Society performance, Baum invited Balanchine and Kirstein’s fledgling company to officially join City Center. On October 11, 1948, New York City Ballet was born with a performance that featured Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco, Orpheus, and Symphony in C.

Balanchine served as Ballet Master of New York City Ballet from its inception until his death, in 1983, choreographing countless works and creating a company of dancers known for their linear purity, sharpness of attack, and overall speed and musicality. In 1949 Jerome Robbins joined the Company as associate director and, with Balanchine, created a varied repertory that grew each season.

Following Balanchine’s death, Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins were named Co-Ballet Masters in Chief, and from 1990 until he retired in 2017, Mr. Martins assumed sole responsibility for the Company’s artistic direction. Under Martins’ leadership, NYCB maintained the integrity of its core works, the 20th-century masterpieces by Balanchine and Robbins, while adding significantly to its repertory by commissioning more than 250 world premiere ballets created by more than 60 choreographers. As part of NYCB’s ongoing commitment to the development of new choreography, in 2001 Martins created the position of NYCB Resident Choreographer, which was first held by Christopher Wheeldon (2001-2006), and is currently held by Justin Peck. In September 2000, Martins and the late philanthropist Irene Diamond launched the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of New York City Ballet, which promotes the development of choreographers and dancers involved in classical choreography by providing opportunities to develop their talents.

In 2009 Katherine Brown was named NYCB’s first-ever Executive Director, a position created to oversee the administrative management of the Company. In February of 2019, Jonathan Stafford was named Artistic Director of New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet, and Wendy Whelan was named Associate Artistic Director of New York City Ballet.

As a dancer with NYCB, Stafford performed an extensive repertory of featured roles in numerous ballets by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins, and Christopher Wheeldon, and also originated featured roles in works by Mauro Bigonzetti and Alexei Ratmansky. As an educator, Stafford served as a member of SAB’s guest faculty beginning in 2006 and joined the School’s permanent faculty in 2007. In 2015 he was named SAB’s first Professional Placement Manager. He graduated summa cum laude from the Fordham School of Professional and Continuing Studies with a B.A. in Organizational Leadership.

Born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Stafford studied at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet before entering SAB in the summer of 1996. Stafford was named an apprentice with NYCB in 1998, joined the corps de ballet in 1999, and rose through the ranks to became a Principal Dancer in 2007.

Wendy Whelan was named New York City Ballet Associate Artistic Director in February 2019. One of the most acclaimed dancers of her generation, she performed with NYCB for 30 years. Whelan danced principal roles in more than 125 ballets in NYCB’s repertory, performing virtually all of the major Balanchine roles, working closely with Jerome Robbins on many of his works, and originating roles in more than 50 ballets by such choreographers as William Forsythe, Twyla Tharp, Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, and numerous others. Following her retirement from NYCB in October 2014, she has cultivated multidisciplinary performance projects with a wide range of collaborators. Whelan began studying dance in Louisville with Virginia Wooton, a local teacher, and at the Louisville Ballet Academy before first studying at SAB in the summer of 1981. She was named an apprentice with NYCB in 1984, joined the corps de ballet in 1986, and was promoted through the ranks to be elevated to Principal Dancer in 1991. She is the recipient of a 2007 Dance Magazine Award, the 2011 Jerome Robbins Award, a 2011 Bessie Award for Sustained Achievement in Performance, and a Doctorate of Arts, honoris causa, from Bellarmine University.

Andrew Litton, Music Director of the New York City Ballet since 2015, is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Conductor Laureate of Britain’s Bournemouth Symphony, and Music Director Laureate of Norway’s Bergen Philharmonic, where he recently concluded a 12-year tenure as Music Director. For his work in Bergen, King Harald V knighted Litton with the Norwegian Royal Order of Merit.  Litton led the Dallas Symphony as Music Director from 1994 to 2006. Each season, he also guest conducts leading orchestras and opera companies around the globe and adds to his discography of more than 130 recordings, which have garnered America’s Grammy Award, France’s Diapason d’Or, and other honors.

Litton’s work in ballet began while he was a Juilliard student, performing as onstage pianist for Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, and Cynthia Gregory. An accomplished pianist, Litton is an acknowledged expert on George Gershwin and has performed and recorded Gershwin widely as both pianist and conductor. In 2014 he released his first solo piano album, A Tribute to Oscar Peterson. For more information visit andrewlitton.com.

SPAC Packs a Punch

THIS YEAR’S CLASSICAL SEASON IS HIGHLIGHTED BY THE RETURN OF SARATOGA FAVORITES SUCH AS YO-YO MA PLUS FAMOUS NEWCOMERS LED BY AUDRA MCDONALD. n BY JEFF DINGLER

It’s not summer in Saratoga until the strains of classical music start pouring out of Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). Ballet and classical music enthusiasts will have more than enough to swing their air batons to this season with a sprawling slate of familiars such as virtuosic cellist (and last year’s saratoga living cover star) Yo-Yo Ma; the New York City Ballet (NYCB), which is celebrating its 75th anniversary with an exciting program of crowd favorites and SPAC premieres; and the Philadelphia Orchestra—which will balance spectacular premieres and

artist debuts, including that of Emmy-, Grammy-, and Tony-winning Broadway superstar Audra McDonald. “There’s so much I’m excited about, it’s a little hard to keep it concise,” says Elizabeth Sobol, SPAC President and CEO. “For the NYCB, the SPAC Premieres program is amazing, but I’m thrilled we’ll also get to see Justin Peck’s first eveninglength ballet, Copland Dance Episodes.” From July 18-22, the NYCB will return with the full company and a roster of more than 90 dancers under Artistic Director Jonathan Stafford. The season kicks off with “NYCB On and Off Stage,”

an accessible, peak-behind-the-curtain teaser, featuring the best excerpts from the week’s ballet programs. “[This] has become an important part of our efforts to bring new people to experience ballet in an inviting way,” says Sobol. “New for this year, the celebratory evening will culminate in a dance party in the Hall of Springs.”

Following this is two nights (July 19-20) of “SPAC Premieres,” spotlighting new and contemporary works from around the globe, such as Play

Time by Gianna Reisen, which is set to music by hip-hop icon Solange Knowles, and Love Letter (on shuffle) by Kyle Abraham, with music by Grammywinning English singer-songwriter James Blake, among others. There will also be two performances of a different SPAC premiere (July 20 and 22): the aforementioned Copland Dance Episodes by New York-based, Tony-winning choreographer, director and dancer Justin Peck. This original “full-evening” work is set to four of Copland’s most famous compositions: Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, Fanfare for the Common Man, and Rodeo Closing out the dance season (July 21-22) are ballet classics Swan Lake (Tchaikovsky/ Balanchine), Fancy Free (Bernstein/ Robbins) and Firebird (Stravinsky/ Balanchine and Robbins).

“There’s always something special about performing outside at this wonderful venue that has been NYCB’s summer home for so many years,” says NYCB principal dancer Mira Nadon. “I’m particularly excited to bring Justin Peck’s Copland Dance Episodes to Saratoga. The choreography, music, costumes and lighting have all come together in such a beautiful way, and I’m so excited for the Saratoga audiences to get to experience it.”

Next up, the Philadelphia Orchestra is packing quite a musical punch as well, with homecomings from Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Emmy- and Grammy-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Also returning, for the first time in a decade, is renowned violinist Gil Shaham, who will lead a special SPAC premiere (August 16) of Vivaldi’s beloved violin concerti,

The Four Seasons. In contrast, there will be several exciting debuts, including a genre-blending “little orchestra” called Pink Martini with China Forbes (August 4) and theater dynamo Audra McDonald, who’s won six Tony awards throughout her career—more than any other actor. (All she needs is an Oscar for EGOT status.)

“I’m very much looking forward to returning to lovely Saratoga this summer to perform with the incomparable Philadelphia Orchestra led by my dear friend [conductor] Andy Einhorn,” says McDonald, who’s been spotted around the Capital Region in recent years filming for HBO’s The Gilded Age. “SPAC is such a special place in the summer, and I can’t wait to sing my Broadway favorites from Ellington, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gershwin, Sondheim and more.”

In addition to McDonald’s night of Broadway favorites (August 10), The Philadelphia Orchestra will present Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring alongside John Luther Adams’ Vespers of the Blessed Earth (August 12), a new work and another SPAC premiere that, Sobol teases, will “be performed in a unique and nontraditional manner.” Audiences should also be sure to catch Yo-Yo Ma as he performs Dvořák’s ebullient Cello Concerto with guest conductor Xian Zhang (August 17). The orchestra will round out its wide-ranging season with a couple of films: Earth: An HD Odyssey (August 18) and, the following day, Jurassic Park In Concert, in honor of the classic dino-flick’s 30th anniversary. Velociraptors, ballet and Audra McDonald? Sounds like another unforgettable SPAC summer. n
