Ithink Alexx Bradley says it best in his col‐umn this month; October truly is the most beautiful month in our Capital Region. The cool evenings usher in dew‐soaked morn‐ings. I love when the sun hits the droplets – it is like the whole world is sparkling and that anything is possible.
We truly get to enjoy October…as parents and grandparents we, hopefully, are settled back into the school routine, and as com‐muters, we know the best routes to take to avoid the dreaded school bus traffic jams. Now is the time to pack the family car and head out on a road trip. We have compiled some amaz‐ing destinations, fit for the whole family, to experience the beauty of the foliage and the autumnal bounty of the region. If you are look‐ing for a more grown‐up adventure, check out The Grateful Traveler’s piece on her recent visit to the newly renovated Equinox Golf Resort and Spa in Manchester, VT. Sitting by the firepit with a glass of wine sounds amazing after a day of shopping and leaf peeping!
This month we also bring you our annual Dental section. It is bigger than ever with a dynamic group of practitioners who serve our communities with the mission of providing exemplary, world‐class care to their patients. We welcome you to explore these profiles (and read the ABC’s of Dental Specialities) before you head to the chair for your next cleaning.
Our Cover Companion is back for the sec‐ond time of 2019. Our fur babies are an inte‐gral part of our families. They brighten our day, make us laugh, and provide uncondition‐al love. In growing our Cover Companion Initiative, we are committed to raising money and awareness for our partner nonprofits, The Animal Protective Foundation, 11th Hour Canine Rescue, and Everlasting Hope Animal Rescue. These organizations provide essential services to the four‐legged of our community. To achieve this goal (and to show off some more of the amazing stories and pics we receive throughout the contest) we created a Cover Companions Calendar! It will be sold throughout our region at various retail loca‐tions (check our Facebook page for a list!) 100% of the proceeds will be donated to these organizations so they can continue their work.

Indy and Luna
The special bond between two unlikely pals

It was the 11th hour for Indy when Capital Region resident Sharon O’Connor got the call on the fateful day that started a new chapter for both pup and dog mom.
Indy, a four‐year‐old tan and white Pitbull mix, had gotten herself into a jam. A fourth dog had been introduced into her established household and, as they say, the fur flew. Indy jumped into the fray, and when the dogs were untangled, Indy, now deemed an “agressive dog” was put up for adoption through Second Chance Rescue. As time slipped away, no one came forward to give her the home and care she needed.

Sharon’s friend Jack was concerned, she says. “He had petsat for Indy and knew her”. “He knew she deserved a second chance, that it had been the circumstance, not Indy’s dis‐position that caused her predicament.” His conversation with Sharon about Indy’s plight changed everything. Indy would be an addi‐tion to the furry and feathered friends in her household—a cockatoo, a sheltie and several cats and kittens.
Sharon, a nurse, made the journey to meet Indy. Jack accompanied her, to give a familiar and trusting presence. That first greet‐ing resulted in a return trip with Indy and some counsel on getting her used to her new sur‐roundings and also acclimating the pets in the household to her. Their relationship began with Indy as a fostered dog in Sharon’s home.
“We took it slowly,” Sharon recalls. She bought a crate for Indy to use when she was away from the house, and she set up a kennel outside. These weren’t Indy’s favorite things, because she wanted to be close to family, Sharon discovered.
The pets were introduced carefully to each other. “But they were nonreactive—no problem,” Sharon says. She recalls her sheltie,
Scrubs, excitedly barking at a cat in a tree. Indy joined him side‐by‐side to quietly watch the acrobatic feline. And when Indy was stretched out resting, the cats liked to snuggle up against her.
Out and about in the yard, Indy acted like a pup, running to fetch a toy and make it squeak, or becoming obsessed with a bone.
“When anyone came, she always brought something to the door,” Sharon says, like a welcome home gift no matter how short a time you’d been away.
Luna, a feral kitten, joined the household last spring. She was very ill with an upper respi‐ratory infection, and her mother had stopped taking care of her. In adopting her, Sharon worked to get the infection under control and bottle‐fed her. Luna gained strength to become a rambunctious kitten and the best snuggle buddy for Indy. Sharon captured a video of the kitten cleaning Indy’s ear.
Sharon had noticed a bump on Indy’s tail when she arrived. At the beginning of this past summer, the bump rapidly blew up into a painful ball. After veterinary visits the verdict was in—the tail needed to come off. Indy went home from her procedure with just a lit‐
tle nub of a tail left. She had to wear a recov‐ery cone to keep her from interfering with the healing process. That “cone of shame” became something else for Indy. The five‐week‐old kitten Luna “was not going to let her be alone” and she climbed into the cone to be as close as she could get to nestle alongside Indy. Sharon says, “They were best pals with a special bond.”
Indy’s diagnosis was aggressive bone can‐cer, osteosarcoma, and the prognosis left her with only a few months to live. At this point, she adopted Indy, “so I could give her the best days for whatever time we had left.” There were many “couldn’t anymore’s” for Indy, including getting on the bed and bringing wel‐come‐home gifts to the door. She shortly lost her appetite. But Luna continued to sleep fur‐to‐fur with Indy.
The dog who once had such a questionable future shared her sense of joy and love each day with her new forever family and created indeli‐ble memories for Sharon. Indy passed away just a couple of weeks before this publication. This article is a tribute to a very special dog and her loving family: Sharon, Indy’s furry siblings, and especially her little Luna.

SELECTION PROCESS
“If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”
This is the question we've asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and of course physical results.
The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer's work when evaluating the other nominees.
Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received as well as status in various dental academies can play a factor in our decision.
Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists.
Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

The ABCs of Dental Specialities
Translating oral healthcare specialists for a less scary visit to the dentist chair

As we recline in that familiar chair, our dentist may tell us that we have a situa‐tion that requires the expertise of an oral healthcare specialist. These specialists may be an endodontist, a periodontist, an ortho‐dontist, or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Reasons for this referral may include the complexity of the process, your combination of health conditions, or other factors that would result in consultation and coordinated treatment plan between your regular dentist and the specialist. That’s understood, but Max who? Endo what? Ortho how? Just what are these dental fields?
Arm yourself with knowledge, so the next time your dentist suggests a referral, you under‐stand what questions to ask to be your own best advocate. Let’s take an alphabetical look at the ten specialties designated by the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards. These special‐ties generally require several years of advanced training beyond dental school education. Endodontists focus on the interior of the
tooth where we find the canals with tissue (pulp) around the root of the tooth (periradic‐ular). Yes, this includes addressing tooth pain and root canal treatment, as well as other pro‐cedures relating to the interior of the tooth. You may hear your specialist say that their goal is to “save the tooth.” (aae.org).
Oral maxillofacial surgeons provide sur‐gery and treatment relating to hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, and jaw, perform‐ing complex procedures or those that require significant levels of sedation. This may include such actions as extractions, jaw surgery, and cleft lip or cleft palate procedures (aaoms.org). Two other specialties in this area of the mouth are oral maxillofacial radiologists of the teeth and jaws (aaomr.org) and oral maxillofacial pathologists—the latter being the science that investigates the causes, processes, and effects of disease in this region (aaomp.org).
Orthodontists align the jaw and straight‐en teeth and may employ braces, retainers, aligners, and headgear to give you the best smile possible. They address abnormalities in
the position of the teeth (malocclusion) and neuromuscular and skeletal problems. This field also is known as dentofacial orthopedics (mylifemysmile.org).
Periodontists work to prevent and to treat periodontal (gum) disease and oral inflammation. They also are trained in placing and maintaining dental implants. Scaling and root planning are among this specialist’s tech‐niques (perio.org).
Prostodontists restore missing or dam‐aged teeth and jaw structures, which could involve using crowns, dental implants, den‐tures, porcelain veneers, bridges, and recon‐structive dentistry (gotoapro.org).
Other specialists are pediatric dentists who are, in essence, pediatricians of dentistry (aapd.org); dental anesthesiologists, with spe‐cialized training, logically, in dental anesthesi‐ology (asdahq.org); and specialists in public health dentistry, who concentrate on the pre‐vention and control of dental disease on a community basis (aaphd.org).

hen driving to Vermont from the Capital Region this time of year, we’re most often on the hunt for yummy maple products, stellar leaf peeping, or some major fall finds at those famous outlets. But when was the last time it was history you craved? There is never a trip, whether long or short, into Vermont when I fail to learn something interesting about our Northeast neighbor.
If only walls could talk
The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa in Manchester is more than 200 years old and has many unique structures with six distinct architectural styles and histories. In 1769, The Marsh Tavern (now The Equinox) host‐ed Ira Allen, the younger brother of Ethan Allen. He was raising money for the American Revolution Regiment that was to become the famous Green Mountain Boys.
The stately columns that define the property date back to the late 1800s. L.C. Orvis owned what is now the North Wing of the resort, which serves now as the Chop House Restaurant. At the beginning of the auto‐mobile age, the brilliant and forward‐thinking Orvis, as the inn's owner, saw a need to create parking accommodations as he knew folks would now be traveling on wheels and not horses. The name Orvis lives on in high style just across the street, as a world‐famous store specializing in fishing and outdoor sports equipment. The fly fishing ponds and training center are steps away from The Equinox Resort today and draw many fly fishing and hunting aficionados to the town.
The Guinness Family purchased the resort many years later and remodeled in the look of their Scotland homeland with tartan plaids on the floors and green velvet on the windows. The Scottish style remained until the newest multi‐million dollar renovation.

The lonely suite
One of the most fascinating tidbits of history involves the Lincoln family. Mary Todd Lincoln and her two young sons traveled to Vermont and became enamored with Manchester. That trip was during the summer months of 1864. She lobbied her husband, President Abraham Lincoln, to join the following year's vacation. With the trip reserved and planned, an exclusive suite was built to accommodate the President, his often‐per‐snickety wife, and their children. A few months before the proposed trip, President Lincoln was assassinated on April 14th, 1865. So The Lincoln Suite was never enjoyed by the great man.
The President’s children later set up residency at the vacation home Hildene, very near The Equinox. You can visit and enjoy more of the Lincoln family’s history and take a guided tour with beautiful stories about the family’s lives after the assassination.
Worthy present day
Rather than rest on its past glory, The Equinox’s recent multi‐million dollar renova‐tion (completed in 2018) fuses modernity with its historic roots. The lobbies, guest rooms, and restaurants are stunning.
The Falcon Bar serves as a fun gathering spot for hotel guests in every season. The large French doors open to a massive deck with a large contemporary firepit. As the locals are eager to tell you, "Vermont can have all four seasons in one day," and that was the case when I was visiting, so the firepit was a hit with us all.
The well‐appointed and lovely spa offers a total escape. In addition to body treat‐ments, there is a sizeable exercise facility, indoor lap pool, and an outdoor hot tub — all these within steps of the spa.
Hikes, falconry, a Land Rover off‐road experience, archery, tennis and certainly golf can fill your days at The Equinox in exhilarating fashion.
Two restaurants, The Chop House and Marsh Tavern, serve the best cuts of beef or local hearty New England choices. Breakfast is served in a large and lovely open room with sweeping views – but don’t let that distract you from the best homemade cider donuts that have to be tried!
I am hard‐pressed to think of another property with mountain views as grand as these — a trip to The Equinox for whatever reason in whatever season is delightful. CRL

Mole poblano and chile reyenos (stuffed poblano peppers) are definitely our favorite dishes. First, because they are our mom’s recipes and second because they represent the most traditional dishes from our home state of Puebla, Mexico

We have a passion for it! We grew up in a large family where we always got together, and cooking was a big part of those gatherings. We cooked, we baked, and we ate every time we got together with the family. We have respect for the food industry. You've got to love it to be in it!
How and where were you trained?
We received most of our training at home and through working in the restaurant industry.
How do you manage your staff?
Managing staff and keeping calm on a busy day are probably the two
most difficult and challenging things to do in a restaurant. But with many years of experience it becomes a routine. You work with your staff, treat them with respect, and you get only good results back.
What is your favorite food and beverage pairing and why?
Our favorite cuisine is Italian paired with a good bottle of wine.

I know that I have to set the tone in the kitchen day in and day out. The more I show my staff that it's more productive to
stay calm, they follow suit. Sometimes you have to slow down to speed up.
What is your favorite food and beverage pairing and why? A classic bacon cheeseburger with a cold beer. There is nothing more satisfying than that all–American classic.
What dish are you most proud of and why?
I don’t have a favorite one, but based on success alone, I would have to go with the tempura Surf and Turf Roll. This appetizer came about when we were opening 677 Prime, and I thought to myself, “what best represents a steakhouse?” and came up with the steak and lobster combination in sushi form.

Why the food industry?
I was going to school for business, paying my way through school as a shortorder cook. I realized along the way that I thrive in a chaotic environment, and what has more chaos than the restaurant industry? I love the fast pace and (aggressive at times) passion, which contrasts with the delicate hand needed to attain perfection on each plate. I eventually fell in love with the infinite possibilities that come with cooking and creating and seeing ideas not only come to life, but also be enjoyed by our guests.
How do you manage your staff?
It is odd; the crazier things get, the more focused and in control I become. I try to pass this on to my team by conveying a sense of urgency while keeping composure and driving focus. There is nothing we can’t do so long as we remain cohesive in our goal and keep guests our focus: in service, in the glass, and on the plate.
What is your favorite food and beverage pairing, and why?
I can’t tell you one thing, my love for food and beverage is too vast. If you gave me a category, say beer, I’d pair it with a burger topped with bacon. Wine? A bold cabernet with a ribeye steak. Spirits? A premium margarita with authentic tacos.

Gearing up for paring down – what to expect as you prepare to age in place

Should we stay, or should we go? That was the nagging question that had been swirling around my head since we received the news of my husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis.
Honestly, the question surfaced long before that. Aaron and I have been empty‐nesters for more than a decade. Our adult children are married and have children of their own. So, why do we still need a four‐bedroom house? As a parent, all kinds of “what‐if” scenarios plagued me in the middle of the night. After all, isn’t that what nighttime is for ‐ worrying? Where would our company stay? What if we regret mov‐ing? How will we sort through all of our stuff?
Living in a state of limbo and stressing over an endless list of per‐ceived roadblocks conveniently aided our avoiding the subject alto‐gether. As a licensed real estate professional, I’ve seen too many peo‐ple wait to downsize and end up breaking a hip…or worse. Moving while in crisis is an unsettling ordeal, and family members may have to make difficult decisions on your behalf. We knew we had to decide on our own.
After contemplating the pros and cons, my husband and I decid‐ed that it would be best for us to move. And just like that, our house‐hunting search began. On the surface, it looked like we’d be spending more for less space. What people don’t consider is the cost of aging in place, especially if you don’t have a first‐floor bedroom, full bath, and laundry. Whatever your decision is, it’s a highly personal one that only you can make. After many months, we ended up finding a nice single floor, three‐bedroom townhouse with an HOA, unfinished basement, and a two‐car garage. No more hiring someone to mow the lawn, shovel the driveway, trim the bushes, paint the house. Our new place is maintenance‐free, and we look forward to enjoying those perks after we move in.

Facing the stuff that we had collected over the years was the next step. We knew we couldn’t do it alone, so we hired friends who are professional organizers to help with this huge task. Their help was immeasurable because they kept us motivated and on sched‐ule. If you cannot afford to hire professionals, ask supportive friends and family for help.
We started in our weary basement and then moved throughout the house; room to room. As we began the sorting process, our lives flashed before us. The memories all came flooding back. We allowed ourselves time to cry, to mourn, to laugh, and to cherish all that we’ve shared as a couple and as a family. I think that no matter what age we are, we ask ourselves how we got here so fast. We gener‐ally don’t feel our age, so how is it that we’re in our 60s and 70s?
It is interesting what we keep. Aaron tends to be more of a packrat than me, except when it comes to paperwork! I had kept 25 years’ worth of tax returns and financial records, among other special mementos from my teaching days, living in Paris, and some contents from my mother’s house. And of course, our kids’ stuff was all over.
Aaron had kept the first microscope he used as a young doctor, his Japanese‐issued license plates from his service in the Army, along with a lot of Japan‐related trinkets, fur‐niture, and accessories that were eventually relegated to the basement.
Taking the time to sort through your stuff is a luxury that you don’t get to enjoy when you have to move in a crisis. Get started today. Set a completion date and stick to it. The decluttering process had a deeply cathar‐tic effect on both Aaron and me.
What’s next? We’re working on our punch list so that we can put our home on the market while waiting to close on our new home. This process, as we move through it, has given me a newfound appreciation for the amount of emotion and love that can be tied to things, and to a home. This is where we have raised our children, where we have kissed scraped knees, where we have helped with homework, and where we laundered loads of clothes during college breaks. This is where we truly lived and loved, laughed and cried. It’s what makes a house a home. Now it is time to say goodbye, to curate our new lives and cull down our possessions. This is how we start our new adventure. It is all bittersweet, but oh, so exciting!

October Purging
Like as with a witch’s broom, sweep away the clutter.
September ended with a Full Moon in Libra, which is about finding balance in our lives as well as socializing and all things we find beautiful. This is quite fitting as, to my mind, October is the most beautiful month of the year in upstate New York. The leaves are nearing peak, the days are getting shorter, there is a chill to the morning air, and pumpkins dot the landscape at farm stands and on front porches. Our weekends are filling up with harvest and Halloween happenings, includ‐ing hay rides, apple picking, and haunted houses. Even for those who don't always believe, there is no denying that the month of October is magical.
The first two weeks leading up to the Full Moon are about looking at areas of your life that long for change. For some this may be about let‐ting go of things that are holding you back or just aren't fulfilling you any‐more. It is the perfect time to go through closets and attics and do some purging. As we grow, we change. You may realize that you have just accumulated too much stuff that no longer resonates with you. In Feng Shui, a cluttered home means a cluttered mind. More and more we are realizing that "our stuff" doesn't define who we are and in some cases no longer serves our purpose, both literally or figuratively. But remember, this is about finding balance and creating balance. Sometimes, this “clut‐ter” can be part of our professional or personal lives, or even relation‐ships that are no longer healthy or serve our higher purpose.
Being autumn, we are pulling out the warmer clothes and adding warmer colors to our home, so it is the perfect time to do some purging of your physical space. As for the more personal relationship issues, this is more of a time to take stock and be honest about what is important to you and your well‐being, but perhaps not the best time to make drastic decisions regarding friendships or relationships. With the Full Moon on October 13 in Aries, the writing is on the wall. No matter what the issue
is ‐ from love, and friendships, to work and the stuff you never thought you would part with, you will see clearly if it benefits you. If it is time to part ways, you will let it go.
If our clutter pertains to relationships, this Full Moon’s importance is twofold. All Full Moons are about letting go, but this moon in Aries, a sign not associated with being overly emotional or sentimental, will allow us to be objective with our decisions. This will allow us to let go, and heal or move on from that clutter.
During the two weeks between the Full and New Moons, continue to make a conscious effort to let go and to purge. If all you let go of are old grudges and old resentment, then you have taken the first steps…after all, they are no healthier for you than Halloween candy! The last two weeks of October are spectacular, the overall energy high. We are in the mood to get out and socialize and do all things Halloween. We are also building up to the New Moon in Scorpio on the 28th. Intuition becomes more powerful during this time, so trust what you feel. The Scorpio New Moon, being associated with deep thoughts, psychic abili‐ty, those that have crossed over, and re‐incarnation, arrives perfectly timed to three days before Halloween. This is a perfect time to go to holistic or psychic fairs, or make an appointment with your favorite psy‐chic or medium.
All Hollow’s Eve is the day that the veil between this side and the other is at its thinnest, allowing those that have crossed over to walk among us. In folklore we bury potatoes or other vegetables and leave food out for souls that are crossing over or under on this night.
October ends with a few tricks, rather than treats, up its sleeve with Mercury going retrograde on the 31st. Expect a few tricks, or at least mechanical issues, over the coming weeks.

Reimagining Your Role
Respect over advice, behavior over words.
Has this ever happened to you? You mention something about your life, perhaps an event that was a bit upsetting, and your friend or family member begins a long diatribe offering criticism and advice on what should have happened. This person loves giving advice, offering commentary on the mistakes of others and seldom is a reliable ear to listen, smile, and affirm your well‐being.
Regardless of the intention of the other person, if you have been on the receiving side of this input, the conversation feels yucky (yes…a very clinical term for lousy). Over time, if this continues, you begin to get the feeling that not only are they never really listening to you, but they seemingly have no respect for you.
Why? Because they repeatedly assume you can’t think for yourself, or figure things out on your own. We find it insulting (although many of us never develop the backbone to speak this truth).
Now, let’s tweak the scenario. That same friend or family member is allowed into your home every day. They incessantly remind you to eat your vegetables, pick up your shoes, fix your hair, and notice when you sneak an extra potato chip. You hear a constant, “Do this…Don’t do that… Put that down…Leave her alone…Sit up straight…Why can’t you just listen…What’s wrong with you…Here, let me show you again.” The list could go on and on.
How are you feeling now? If you can step into this imagined sce‐nario, you are probably feeling pretty yucky! You are probably deeply uncomfortable. I hope this scenario and ensuing discomfort help you understand why the Renegade Parent doesn’t have to worry about self‐esteem, confidence and self‐respect with their children!
The renegade parent abandons advice in favor of respect.
When we are constantly advising, directing and critiquing our chil‐dren, we are offering a message BEHIND the words we speak. That hid‐den message is:
“Sweetheart, you don’t get it. You never seem to get it. You are NOT ENOUGH…yet.”
Many of you have children who have heard words of guidance, direction and criticism dozens of times a day. Over the years, this accu‐mulates to tens of thousands of moments where, in their minds, they are not enough. This is how we destroy esteem and confidence.
The renegade parent understands this and chooses respect over advice and direction. Instead of talking (about what their children can do better or correcting them), the renegade chooses to let their children learn from their choices. The underlying belief of the renegade parent is this: “Sweetheart, above all, we have faith in you. You will figure it out…and you can ask if you need help.” Of course, this is expressed and explained to the child, but not repeatedly and incessantly, but on occasion. More impor‐tantly, the action of Mom and Dad prove that this is true.
Not only do they have faith in their children to learn, they realize that this process of learning from choice and consequence is a critical skill to master in life. By protecting children from the consequences of their poor choices, we are teaching a lie about life. The renegade parent refuses to teach their children lies.
The renegade parent abandons excessive words for a better behavior plan.
The renegade model of parenting abandons all words focusing on the negative. They give up reminders, suggestions, complaints and coaching in favor of a better behavior plan. This is an essential part of teaching their children that they respect them, and how reality works.
A better behavior plan is needed to provide the feedback, as cer‐tainly children will need correction from time to time. When correction is done with few words and consistency, and when choices are connect‐ed to consequences in a clear manner, children learn quickly and auto‐matically how to stay on track. This behavioral portion is critical to the renegade parent, as we cannot just assume kids will ‘figure it out.’
Self-esteem and confidence grow automatically in the renegade home.
Imagine a mind that grows up learning from every choice, without any parental emotional load attached. No frustration. No anger. No crit‐icism. No repetitions to suggest you don’t get it, kid.
That mind grows to know and understand, through experiential learning that, “I can figure things out. I do learn. I have what it takes. I CAN do it.”
This sense of internal certainty and confidence happens naturally. Renegade children’s confidence and self‐worth is not dependent on their parents, rather it arises organically from within. Raylan moved into his one‐bedroom apartment assuming it would be empty. Instead, he found boxes in the closet taped shut and marked, “please donate.” He pried one open and found clothes that someone had left behind. Raylan had noticed a church around the corner when he parked his car, so he took the boxes over first thing in the morning to donate.
When he got to the church, he gave a tug on the big wooden doors, but they were locked tight. A voice in the shadows said, “They don’t open until 10, but you can leave the boxes at the side door, and the priest will take ‘em.” Raylan saw that a man in a brown leather bomber jacket was the one offering advice, so he nodded, followed his instructions and dropped them by the door.
As he went to leave the man half‐hidden by shadows said, “Yep, the church opens at 10 and closes at 5 every day. Which is good because you don’t want to be in there at night. Not after dark.” Raylan tried to ignore the man’s odd warning, but curiosity got the better of him, so he asked, “Why don’t I want to be in there after dark?” The man leaned into the light now and with his stained yellow teeth smiled a creepy grin and said, “Because it’s haunted.”
Raylan had enough of this silliness, so he left. The next day as he walked by the church he saw the same man still lingering in the shadows, so he approached and asked, “Haunted how?”
The man told Raylan that he once had a drinking problem and spent many nights in the homeless shelter. The only rule at the shelter was that you couldn’t bring alcohol in, but there were times when he didn’t want to abide so he’d sneak into the church and hide until they locked up, then spend the night sleeping in a back pew. It was uncomfortable but warm and quiet. Well, usually quiet.
He said, “One night I’m sound asleep, and at the stroke of midnight after the bells chime, an old priest appears on the altar. He shouted out what sounded like ‘Quiz M Est.’ I just stared at him, scared out of my mind, and didn’t say a word. He yells it out two more times into the dark empty church, ‘Quiz M Est, Quiz M Est,’ and then he disappeared.”
Raylan wondered if the man was drunk right now but before he could speak the stranger continued, “A few days later I slept there again, and it happened again, right at midnight. Same priest, same weird lan‐guage, shouting it out three times.”
Raylan asked him if it was the priest who ran the parish and the stranger said, “No, no, that’s Father James. He’s like 50 years younger than this guy. Plus this man didn’t dress like priests today; he looked ancient.”
Raylan asked, “So, what happened next?” The man smiled that awful grin again and said, “I ran for my life, that’s what happened next. And I didn’t go back until I shared my story with a couple of guys at the shelter.”
Raylan leaned in closer now, “Go on.”
“So I’m telling them what happened in the church and Mr. Matthew, the guy who runs the shelter, overhears me and says, what did you say the priest shouted? So I tell him it sounded like ‘Quiz M Est.’ It turns out Mr. Matthew studied Latin in college, and he says to me, ‘It sounds like he’s saying ‘Quis Enim Est,’ which means, ‘is anyone there?’”
The strange man continued, “I says to Mr. Matthew, ‘SO’? And he says right back to me, ‘So, answer him ‘Ego Edsum,’ which means I am here.’”
Raylan was on edge, asking, “And did you? Did you go back?”
The man said, “I did right before Halloween. And at midnight there he appears out of nowhere. He shouts his words in Latin ‘Quis Enim Est,’ and I scream back ‘Ego Edsum.’”
Raylan was shouting now: “AND?”
“And he opens a Bible and delivers the entire mass in Latin. When he was done, he closes the book and vanishes.”
Raylan was stunned silent as the man in the leather jacket said, “I gotta go. Remember, never after dark.” With that, he backed into the shadows and left.
The next day Raylan returned to the church and found the pastor, Father James, in the rectory. He told him the ghost story the man shared, and the priest said, “We haven’t said the mass in Latin in a hundred years. Now who is this man who told you about this?”
It was then Raylan glanced over to the wall, which was covered in photographs, and saw a black and white one of the strange man with the yellow teeth with his arm draped around an old priest. “Him. That’s him!” Raylan said.
Father James swallowed hard and said, “Son, that’s Father Francis and the church groundskeeper. That photo was taken in 1919. They’re long dead.”
Raylan felt a chill go up his spine and heard a creepy voice in his head saying, “Not at night, never after dark.”
