GETTING STARTED

ommie Burch is a burst of energy you can’t really prepare for—you just try to keep up. She walked into our cover shoot already mid-stride, or maybe she didn’t walk at all. With Tommie, the line between arriving and already being in motion feels thin. The old science lesson comes back to me: A body in motion stays in motion. That’s her. Completely.

I asked if she drinks coffee. As someone who relies on it to nudge myself toward the day, I figured caffeine had to be her secret. Nope.

She doesn’t need it. Before our photographer even locked in his settings, she twisted herself into a pretzel—bent at the waist, one leg looped over her head—balanced on a Bosu ball like she was born on one. A moment later, she was knocking out pull-ups.

Tommie was one of 10 trainers we spoke with for this edition. Same questions, different stories, and a handful of wonderfully unexpected answers you can read starting on page 28. But when we asked what they’d say to someone thinking about starting their health journey in the new year, their responses aligned almost word for word.

Self-care and self-love are the foundations of success in all areas of your life.” She said it simply, without pretense—like someone who’s lived it enough times to know.

Her advice brought me back to a conversation I had years ago with Troy Savings Bank Music Hall’s Ryan Murray, during his early podcast days with the City of Albany. He asked me about writer’s block. I told him I didn’t believe in it—not to be contrary, but because I’ve always felt it gives creative people a convenient place to hide. Sometimes, I said, we just hold on too tightly to perfection. I tried explaining it through exercise: runners run, swimmers swim. They might have bad days, they might fall short of their goals, but they don’t talk about a “block” that keeps them from trying.

To embrace the noun, you have to act on the verb. No matter who you want to become, don’t worry about what your calendar says.

BENITA ZAHN 2.0

You know her from 41 years of local news. Now, the former broadcast journalist is making the Capital Region healthier and happier, one client at a time.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KONRAD ODHIAMBO hen celebrated Capital Region news anchor Benita Zahn switched careers nearly five years ago, she was surprised by how easily she made the change. “I joke with my clients that it’s a lot like my old life,” Zahn says about moving from broadcast journalism to working as a health and wellness coach for Capital Cardiology in Albany. “I ask a lot of questions, I write a report...I just don’t have to wear as much makeup.”

After four decades at NewsChannel 13, Zahn jokes that she’s now the best-dressed health and wellness coach on the East Coast. All cheekiness aside, Zahn learned invaluable people skills and gained insights from her years of reporting. While working as a reporter, she not only won an Emmy for her coverage on Korean War veteran John “Red” Parkinson—she also completed a master’s degree and earned a Doctor of Professional Studies degree in bioethics from Albany Medical College.

By 2021, “it was time for a change.”

Now certified through the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching, Zahn has helped hundreds of New Yorkers overcome the challenges to living their best possible life. Her kind of coaching is much more than a diet or gym membership. It’s about making holistic, long-term, sustainable life choices—what she calls “head to heart care.” That could mean anything from encouraging exercise and losing weight, to

better time management, to therapy and building self-confidence to make these necessary life changes. Or all of the above.

Zahn points out that her work is done on a case-by-case basis; there’s not one-sizefits-all recipe to wellness. “Too many people confuse self-care with selfishness,” she says. “But if we don’t put gas in our tanks, we can’t do all the things we have to do.”

The Long Island native thinks back to a client who visited her for the first time a

year ago. The woman wasn’t yet 70, but was already completely reliant on a walker. Since working with Zahn, she’s lost 65 pounds and recently walked a 5K in just over an hour. She no longer uses a walker, swims three times a week, and is working with a personal trainer.

“Even the best baseball players go to a coach to help them see what they’re doing right and what they could improve on,” Zahn says. “Everyone can benefit from having a coach in their corner.”

More Than a Massage School

T

At the Center for Natural Wellness School of Massage Therapy in Colonie, NY, education, empowerment, creativity, and community come together to create a transformative learning environment.

he Center for Natural Wellness School of Massage Therapy (CNWSMT) has a long name for a good reason. In addition to being the pinnacle of Capital Region massage therapy education for the last 27 years (hence the “School of Massage Therapy”), the Colonie institution also serves as a vibrant community hub for continuing education, wellness services, and holistic learning (hence the “Center for Natural Wellness”). Altogether, CNWSMT is accomplishing the not-sosmall task of making the Capital Region a healthier, happier place.

“Massage therapy is grounded in connection, service, and whole-person wellness, and we believe those values extend beyond the classroom,” says Desirae Carosi, CNWSMT’s owner and director of education. “That’s why community programs are an essential part of our mission.”

Such programs include sound baths, reiki shares, art therapy, and a nighttime new-moon ceremony called Moon Wish Manifestation Meditation. Others explore the power of sound, movement, and the mind. Together, these monthly offerings make up CNWSMT’s open-to-the-public wellness series, a year-long journey of mind-body nourishment. And the community is catching on.

“The response to these programs has been truly extraordinary,” Carosi says. “People consistently tell us that our events give them something they’ve been missing in their daily lives: a place to slow down, breathe, and feel genuinely cared for.”

Another service CNWSMT offers is its massage clinic, where

students in the final stages of the institution’s 1,020-hour program provide affordable massages to members of the community.

Student massages are just $45 for a 50–60-minute session, or patrons can receive an hour-long massage from a fully licensed therapist for $70—still an incredible deal.

“With over 3,000 active clients and a wide range of appointment availability, our clinic has become a reliable wellness resource for the region,” Carosi says. “We’re proud to bring massage therapy into the community, making it more accessible and more deeply impactful.”

Carosi, herself a proud graduate of CNWSMT, stepped into her administrative role when the school’s previous owner retired in the midst of the Covid pandemic. She vividly recalls those first uncertain months: enrollment in flux, the wellness industry fighting to stay alive, and a community that could no longer safely gather in person. Looking back, she understands more than ever the profound importance of being together— learning, healing, and supporting one another in a shared space.

For Carosi, wellness is not simply a service—it is a lifeline for a community seeking connection, stability, and hope.

At Zappia & Fryer General Dentistry, sisters Kendra Zappia and Morgan Fryer treat their employees—and patients—like family.

he story of Hebe Medical Spa began at 5:00 in the morning. “I met my business partner at the gym,” says Hebe CEO Irina Damyanidu of Dr. Zainab Mogul-Ashraf. “She was an internist at a big hospital in the area and I was a bank executive. f you’ve been looking for an excuse to make a weekend trip to Beacon, this is it. This spring, the Dutchess County city—beloved for its thriving art scene, ample recreational opportunities, and must-try bars and restaurants—will welcome a state-of-the-art inn and spa. And you might recognize the name behind it.

While Mirbeau Companies celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, the name Mirbeau really came onto Capital Regionites’ radar in 2017, when Spa Mirbeau opened in Crossgates Mall.

While the Albany day spa has quickly become a wellness destination for spalovers from around the 518, it’s Mirbeau’s

York State Treasurer Joseph Howland and his wife, Eliza. The Howlands named the home Tioronda, a Native American word meaning “meeting place of the waters.”

After Joseph’s death, Tioronda become Craig House, a psychiatric hospital for the rich and famous.

Now, the mansion will once again become a place of healing. When its renovation is completed, the inn will house guestrooms and multiple common spaces, including a grand music room with a pipe organ named after Richard Morris Hunt, the architect who designed it as an addition to the main mansion. Add in eucalyptusscented steam rooms, relaxing saunas, a solarium with floor-to-ceiling windows, a reflection room for decompressing posttreatment, an Aqua Terrace with a hot spa whirlpool and outdoor bar, and three fitness spaces, and you’ll never want to leave. And then there’s the Bistro & Wine Bar. When they aren’t wandering the gorgeous grounds, relaxing in the spa, or resting in their sumptuous rooms (which are equipped with fireplaces, soaking tubs, and double sinks) guests can indulge in a meal at the Bistro & Wine Bar, Mirbeau Beacon’s onsite restaurant that overlooks the gardens. The menu, also inspired by the cuisine of France, will showcase the bounty of the Hudson Valley, with local and seasonally sourced produce and ingredients from the farms, artisans, and drinks producers that have enriched life in the region for centuries.

In addition to the Bistro, the resort will also boast a Champagne Terrace serving cocktails, bubbles, and light fare right off the Hunt Music Room, and the Aqua Terrace will be stocked with ready-to-go meals and a variety of libations.

I swear I’ve seen low-budget horror movies that have started in similar fashion, but when I arrived at June Farms’ warmly illuminated Pony Barn, all my fears subsided.
