e hate to break it to you, Saratoga, but according to Department of Public Works Supervisor Tom McGraw, there’s nothing you can do about the plow trucks pushing snow onto your freshly shoveled driveway. “I have a house here in the city, too, and believe me—when the guys plow my neighborhood, they plow in my driveway,” says McGraw, who began working for the DPW as a laborer in the tree department 27 years ago and now manages the work done on the City’s West Side. “People just have to have a little patience sometimes. We’re not out here to make it difficult for anybody. We’re here to do our thing, and we want to go home just as quickly as anybody else would after plowing for 10, 12 hours.” Now in a leadership role, McGraw still drives one of the City’s 29 plow trucks (there are 11 dump trucks and 18 pick-ups) when a storm rolls into town, covering a territory that stretches from Fourth Street up by Skidmore College south to Van Dam and Church streets. His advice to Saratogians hunkering down for a sure-to-be-snowy Spa City winter season? “Heed the warnings,” he says. “If they say don’t get on the road, don’t get on the road. Let us do what we’ve got to do.”

J

unior Alvarado took his turn on the big stage in 2023 and thrived in the starring role. As the regular jockey for Horse of the Year contender and national sensation Cody’s Wish, Alvarado found himself in the brightest of spotlights—and he couldn’t have looked more at ease. Alvarado astutely piloted Cody’s Wish to four graded stakes victories last year, including his second consecutive score in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in November at Santa Anita. A 37-yearold native of Venezuela, Alvarado took over as the regular rider for Cody’s Wish in May 2022 for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and was aboard the bay son of Curlin for each of the horse’s eight career stakes victories.

16 saratoga living

⁄ WINTER 2024

The inspirational Cody’s Wish story garnered widespread attention, as the horse was named for Cody Dorman, a Kentucky teenager who was born with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome and formed a special bond with the horse. Dorman died November 5, the day after he was in attendance for Cody’s Wish’s final career victory. “It’s been a teaching experience for my kids—teaching them to be humble, to be grateful for what we have,” Alvarado said about the Cody’s Wish/ Cody Dorman story in an interview with the website Horse Racing Nation back in June. “We really have everything. We probably want more stuff, but we have everything we need. It’s given me a chance to teach my kids about life, and it’s just been an unbelievable ride.”

Partnering with Cody’s Wish has been one of many recent highlights for Alvarado, a mainstay on the New York circuit since 2010. He also won the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies aboard the Mott-trained Just F Y I and earned his milestone 2,000th career win when he rode Broadway Force to a victory earlier in the year at Gulfstream Park. Alvarado began his career in his native Venezuela and won his first North American race in 2007 at Gulfstream. He then rode for a while in the Midwest at Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course before settling in New York. Through November, Alvarado had earned more than $12.7 million in purses in 2023 and was on pace to establish a career high in earnings with a month remaining on the calendar. His 15 graded stakes wins in 2023 include eight Grade 1s, a personal best for a single year. Alvarado enjoyed a strong summer at Saratoga with 14 wins, including the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes. Universally respected by his peers, Alvarado was named the recipient of the 2023 Mike Venezia Memorial Award, which is presented annually to a jockey who displays the extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship that personified Venezia, who died as a result of injuries suffered in a riding accident in 1988. The ceremony took place in the winner’s circle at Saratoga. After winning his 2,000th race early last year, Alvarado reflected on the journey his career had taken him on to that point. “It hasn’t come easy for me—I’ve had a lot of injuries—but that’s what makes every win worth it,” he told the media. “A Grade 1 or a claiming race, I’m grateful for each win. I don’t take anything for granted.”

W

hen something of value has been lost, it’s instinctual to try your hardest to find it once again. For newly elected Saratoga Springs Mayor John Safford, that thing is civility. As we sit down at KaffeHouse, where he is a regular, he asks an important question: “Can we bring it back?” The question was the beating heart of Safford’s mayoral campaign. With 20-plus years’ experience managing

18 saratoga living

⁄ WINTER 2024

homeowners associations and condo boards in the community, and previous careers in the computer industry and military service, Safford cites the desire to be useful to others as his “driving force.” Now, that same force propels him to find the answer to his campaign’s question. For Safford, how our modern culture of discontent can be alchemized into one of civility and care can be found by looking to the past, when words weren’t as sharp and networks

were narrower. And he believes that there is no community better positioned to bring such values back to public life than Saratoga—and just in time for the city to hit the worldwide stage as part of the Triple Crown. “We have this international reputation as being a great place to visit, and we’re going to have the Belmont, which is going to do even more for us,” he says. “So the challenge is to bring in conversations about what old-fashioned civility means—not by law, not by edict, not by guilt, but by being good to one another.” Safford and the town’s new Commissioner of Public Safety Commissioner, Tim Coll, have joined incumbents Jason Golub (Public Works), Dillon Moran (Accounts), and Minita Sanghvi (Finance) just in time to whip Saratoga into shape for the biggest event to hit town in recent memory— or maybe ever. But instead of stressing out, Safford stays true to his values and campaign, recalling growing up blue-collar in the Kensington section of Buffalo where front porches were welcoming hubs of community life. With tenderness, he describes boyhood summers spent playing on the street with neighborhood kids while the parents sat out, talking and socializing, building connections one dusk-lit porch conversation at a time. Languages and religions weren’t necessarily shared, but respect and time together always were. “This is one of the things I like about Saratoga,” he says with a smile. “We have porches.” Our modern front lawns, however, have some telling differences. “It’s so odd when you see people who feel obligated to put up signs that say ‘Be civil to one another,’” he says. While it may be odd indeed, such displays reflect just how—even in isolating and polarizing times—the yearning for human kindness does not go away. As Safford looks ahead to what is going to be an octane-fueled 2024, he already has ideas about what a kinder Saratoga will project when the world is watching: “We could be a bright light.”

ecca Molten wanted to have her wedding during the winter for several reasons. For one, she didn’t want to worry about the weather, or about the chance of having to move a planned outdoor ceremony indoors at the last minute. “I have too much anxiety for that,” she says, laughing. “And if we were going to get married inside anyways, then why not do it around a really magical time of year? Saratoga’s so gorgeous during the holidays.” Becca and her then-fiancé, Chris, chose The Adelphi for its vintage but modern feel, and ran with the winter wedding theme. Their altar was flanked by Christmas trees; their centerpieces were lit by soft, romantic candlelight; and Becca’s bridesmaids were dressed in rich tones of velvet. “I wore a fur and my girls had fur shawls,” Becca says. “It was cold that day, but with the furs we got to take some nice photos outside without everyone freezing.” The icing on the (wedding) cake? Everything was walkable for the Moltens’ guests—the rehearsal dinner at The 408 included. “The convenience of Saratoga is so special,” Becca says. “No one had to get on a bus and be shipped anywhere. I really wanted our guests from out of town to have an experience and a feeling about the place—like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is so romantic.’” PHOTOGRAPHY BY DORI FITZPATRICK

hen you think of springtime, you probably think of flowers. So if there was one thing Brianna and Justin Feldman wanted to perfect for their springtime nuptials at June Farms, it was the florals. Of which they wanted a lot. “We wanted to do something that incorporated who we are as people and as a couple,” says Brianna of her big day. “For us that something was bright, vibrant and fun.” To pull off that vision, the Feldmans brought in David Michael Schmidt of Renaissance Floral Design, gave him an idea and let him do his thing. The end result? A fairytale forest wedding in June Farm’s “Timber Town,” accented with striking blue, pink and purple flowers at every turn. While the Feldmans balled out on the floral front, they went big in other areas as well—their 230-person wedding featured an aerialist performance by Good Karma Entertainment, a live band, and an interactive signature cocktail station (conceived of by Brianna’s sister and built by her aunt and uncle) where guests rang a bell and were handed either the groom’s Manhattan or the bride’s Margarita by a gloved hand through a mysterious hole in the wall. “All the credit goes to our vendors,” Brianna says. “It was just what we wanted—a once-in-a-lifetime, unique experience, and the ultimate party feeling for us and our guests.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY JP EL ARIO

or most brides, the perfect summertime wedding would be on a lake, near the ocean, or even at a country club. But for Saratoga native Katherine Henry, there was only one wedding venue that would properly show off peak season in her hometown. “My parents still live about a block away from the track,” the Saratoga native says. “It was actually my first job—I sold programs there in high school. And then when I met my husband in college, the track became a part of our relationship. So once we landed on wanting to get married in Saratoga, the track became a very natural choice to look into.” After a friend who works at Mazzone Hospitality told Katherine that the new 1863 Club was going to become a wedding venue, she and her husband, David, went to see the space. “We visited in the dead of winter and it still took our breath away,” Katherine says. Add in blue hydrangeas (inspired by Westport, MA vacations), a winner’s circle ceremony and Spa City details including ticket stub table numbers, and the Henrys’ Saratoga summer wedding (held in September, just after the racing season) was complete. “You can go to any town and go to a country club, but this was just such so different,” Katherine says. “People kept echoing ‘We have to come back and see this place when the horses are running.’ People were blown away not only by Saratoga but by the track as a backdrop.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHELLE L ANGE

espite what they say about the date, Friday the 13th of October turned out to be quite a lucky day for at least one Capital Region couple. “We really wanted a Halloween wedding, but it was going to be years until it fell on a weekend date again,” says bride McKenna Ethier. “But we noticed there was a Friday the 13th in October and booked it.” With a sufficiently spooky date booked for their “I dos”—at the Queen Anne–style Inn at Erlowest castle, no less— McKenna and her husband, Garrett, got working on the details of their ultimate gothic wedding. “The goal was Phantom of the Opera, and we just went with it,” McKenna says. “We wanted a dark, gothic, Halloween theme, but at the same time wanted to incorporate the fact that it was fall and it’s beautiful in Lake George.” So while the couple opted for a simple ceremony that showcased the foliage of the surrounding mountains, they went all out on Halloween décor, from skeleton Champagne flutes and skull centerpieces to a neon “To Death” (do us part) sign. And while the bride’s dress typically takes center stage at a wedding, the artistic Garrett wasn’t one to let his leading lady get all the glory. “He went online and was able to find an authentic, Victorian-style getup, and that was his outfit,” McKenna says. “He did that all by himself.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSIE CASEY

From capturing the small details that truly tell a love story to being captain of a bride’s personal hype squad on her big day, Sydney K Andrew is much more than a wedding photographer.

f you’re looking for someone to just show up on your wedding day, snap some photos, and go home, don’t call Sydney Andrew “A wedding photographer is not just there to press a button and take photos,” says the photographer behind Sydney K Andrew Photography. “A wedding photographer is a day-of coordinator, seamstress, florist, confidant, friend, bodyguard, hype squad and friend all wrapped up into one. I can’t think of a single wedding where I just showed up and took photos—and I wouldn’t have it any other way!” Andrew’s dedication to her craft and the couples she works with comes from a deep-seated connection to the world of weddings. In a past life, she worked on the venue coordination and catering sides of the business, and just last year planned her very own wedding. She takes pride in knowing how much goes into putting together the perfect day, and strives to be a shoulder to lean on for couples from the beginning stages of planning to the big day and beyond. While she’s based in the Capital Region, Andrew’s happy to travel for weddings; “Love has no limits,” she says. “And neither do I.”

While she is happy to take on weddings of any size, Andrew specializes in intimate weddings—or engagement sessions!—where she can embrace a documentary, candid approach. “My favorite moments to capture are those quiet, unplanned interactions,” she says, “and the small details that really pull together the final gallery to tell the story of a wedding day beyond the formal portraits.” And it makes sense, given Andrew’s fall into her dream job. “I started my business in probably the craziest time to do so: October of 2020,” she says. “I remember some people telling me I was crazy to launch a business in a time when the world was shutting down. But I jumped in with my whole heart and never looked back. My first wedding I ever photographed was a 10-person elopement in the heart of the Adirondacks. It was intimate, romantic, and I just remember getting in my car with goosebumps to head home when it was over. I had an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and finally knew that this was what I was meant to do.” Andrew is currently booking a year out for weddings; contact her today to get your big day on the books. ■

Say Yes to the Dresses

ily Saratoga has long been the first and last stop for Capital Region brides in search of their dream dress. But did you know that just a few blocks away lies another treasure trove of dresses that will help make your vision for your wedding day come to life? That shop is Styled by Lily Saratoga. “It was a bit of an impulse decision on my part,” says Lily owner Laura Mullen, who purchased the original bridal shop in 2014. “I woke up one fall morning in 2021 and decided that we needed to separate bridesmaids and bridal. I had heard about an open retail space at 25 Lawrence Street from a fellow wedding vendor, Samantha Nass Floral Design, that would give me the opportunity to expand our bridesmaid collections, sizes, colors and styles, as well as bring on mother of the bride/groom collections. We always used to get phone calls and inquiries from moms of our Lily brides, and there were very few boutiques in the Capital Region that specialize in mother of the bride looks.” Mullen acted on her impulse, and in February 2022, Styled by Lily Saratoga opened its doors. The shop carries more than 500 bridesmaid dresses and more than 170 mother of the bride/groom dresses, as well as a “Little White Dress” collection. “LWDs are huge right now,” Mullen explains. “Whether it’s for a bride looking to elope, a bride wanting to change out of her gown at the end of the night to party, or a bride looking for a rehearsal dinner/shower dress, we love helping brides expand their wardrobe!” An appointment at Styled by Lily works much the same way as an appointment at Lily does: Each customer is assigned a stylist who will sit down with them at the start of their appointment to discuss the details of the wedding and their vision. From there, the stylist pulls dresses for the customer…and her friends or mom; the space offers two bridesmaid suites divided by a curtain that can open up to accommodate larger parties. Styled by Lily also allows

For a chic alternative to traditional wedding venues, look no further than The 408 Event & Occasion, a private event space located on the second floor of Cantina.

I

Couples have the ability to decorate The 408 Event & Occasion however they’d like for a truly customizable and unique wedding experience.

f you live in Saratoga, chances are you’ve been to Cantina. Over the last decade and a half, the hip Mexican restaurant, with its irresistible margaritas and bottomless chips and salsa, has established itself as the uncontested heart of downtown. Tourists and locals alike gather at the expansive first-floor bar for happy hour, at booths and tables for work lunches and family dinners, or on the openair rooftop for the kickoff to an unforgettable girls’ night out. The vibes, as you probably know, are immaculate. But there’s a pretty good chance that, even if you live in Saratoga, you haven’t been to the restaurant’s second floor: a hidden-in-plain-sight private event space known as The 408 Event & Occasion. Since opening in the fall of 2019, The 408 has been Saratoga’s premier venue for couples looking to get married in an elegant yet casual setting right in the thick of downtown Saratoga. “The 408 is perfect for the couple who is looking for a stylish alternative to a traditional ballroom venue,” says owner Heath Ames. “It has floor to ceiling windows overlooking Broadway and sophisticated décor unlike anything else in the area. And it’s walking distance from many hotels.” The space itself holds 150 people for a cocktail party–style event, which Ames says tends to be more

common among their couples than traditional seated dinners. “We find that many couples who choose The 408 want to forgo traditional seating charts and opt for a more fun dining experience,” she says. “Our space encourages mingling, so we often book larger parties with a buffet and it works great.” As for the food itself, couples who love Cantina can opt for Mexican food at their wedding, but The 408 offers many more food and beverage offerings, including wine country, steak house, Little Italy and Mediterranean packages, as well as passed hors d’oeuvres and comfort food stations. The best part? Weddings at The 408 are extremely customizable; each client receives a custom proposal tailored to their specific needs. In other words, if you want to add a cocktail hour on the Cantina rooftop, that’s possible. And if you want to transform the space to meet your vision of your perfect wedding day, an in-house event planner and coordinator is there to help. “We had a Halloween-themed wedding, and one couple filled the space with LED balloons that made the whole place sparkle,” Ames says. “We love our space, and it’s extra special when couples make it their own with unique décor.” ■ 408 BROADWAY, SARATOGA SPRINGS ● 518.587.3982 the408saratoga.com

ou can’t talk about the wedding industry in the Capital Region without talking about Mazzone Hospitality. The restaurant, catering and events company got its start when Angelo Mazzone purchased Peggy’s Restaurant in Schenectady and started Canalside Catering in 1980; since then, Mazzone Hospitality has grown into an empire that operates venues, provides off-premise catering, and even now has an in-house designer dedicated to taking your event to the next level. “Whether you are planning a wedding, social gathering or corporate event, our team is here to bring the spark of an idea to awe-inspiring life,” says Mazzone Hospitality’s Marketing Manager, Devin Manz. “Our talented in-house designer can elevate your special occasion with incredible rental furniture, luxurious linens, cutting-edge lighting, and carefully curated décor. Mazzone Hospitality is your one-stop shop for a jaw-dropping celebration.” For the easiest, most seamless wedding-planning experience, choose from one of Mazzone Hospitality’s exclusive venues, which include the picturesque Saratoga National Golf Club, the historic Saratoga Hall of Springs, the classic Glen Sanders Mansion in Scotia

or the modern Loft 433 in Troy. (Other unique venues include the 1863 Club at Saratoga Race Course, Empire State Plaza, The Wire Event Center, Gather Greene, the National Museum of Racing and the New York State Museum.) Mazzone Hospitality can handle everything, from the china, glassware and tablescapes to a customized menu including passed hors d’oeuvres, raw bar, dessert stations and even your wedding cake. If you opt for a venue not operated by Mazzone, you can expect the same high quality of catering services by their off-premise team, whether your wedding is a backyard ceremony in Vermont or a blow-out barn party in the Hudson Valley. “For many couples, planning their wedding is the largest-scale event they’ve ever had to manage,” Manz says. “With so many moving parts, it’s important to have vendors like Mazzone Hospitality to take the stress off and ensure the day runs smoothly.” Sales Manager Eliyana Keisler echos the sentiment. “We are so much more than just a caterer,” she says. “We create small moments in time that translate to everlasting memories.” ■ 743 PIERCE ROAD, CLIFTON PARK ● 518.690.0293 mazzonehospitality.com

Each honoree was gifted a bouquet of flowers by Samantha Nass Floral Design while a slideshow of trivia about the honorees—made possible by DeCrescente Distributing, Swifty’s Restaurant and Pub, New York Oncology Hematology, Stuyvesant Plaza, Old Daley, NYRA, Amadore Homes, Alexis Diner and E. Stewart Jones— played above the stage. Afterwards, guests grooved to music by DJ Eric and took turns testing out photographer Hannah Kuznia’s fun photo booth. A huge shout-out to the event’s presenting sponsor, Rotor-Matic Plumbing & Drain Solutions, for helping make the entire magical night possible.

The 30 Minute Hit community supports each other one punch and kick at a time. Together, they conquer challenges, celebrate victories and empower one another to be their strongest selves.

Saratoga’s Hit New Workout Inspired by boxing and self-defense techniques, 30 Minute Hit provides a strength and conditioning workout for women in— —yep— —a half hour.

D

o you ever just feel like hitting something? Thanks to women-only kickboxing gym 30 Minute Hit, now you can…in a socially acceptable way. “30 Minute Hit is a circuit-style HIIT workout inspired by boxing, kickboxing and self-defense techniques,” says Steve Kissinger, who opened the gym at 3 Hampstead Place with his wife, Katie, in the summer of 2023. “It consists of 13 stations, two minutes each. That means the whole thing takes only 30 minutes. Because we break each two-minute round into 15-second intervals, our intense workout becomes very achievable. You can do anything for 15 seconds!” The end result is a workout that combines both strength and conditioning (and stress relief!) that can boost your energy levels long after you finish a class. The first step to joining 30 Minute Hit is to sign up for a completely free trial class to make sure you love the format. Once you sign up for an unlimited membership, you’ll be given free gloves and hand

wraps, and then can dive into your kickboxing journey. “The best part is you don’t have to sign up for a class in advance once you’re a member,” Kissinger says. “You can come in any time during our open hours and hop on the circuit. There is always a trainer on the floor to motivate you and help you level up your technique.” Not sure if 30 Minute Hit is for you? Current members span all fitness levels and range in age from 16-82. Have little ones in tow? “We have a free kids area with toys and coloring to make it easy for busy moms to get a workout in,” Kissinger says. Hear that, moms? No excuses! And while the Kissingers saw opening 30 Minute Hit as a smart business decision—approachable, affordable 30-minute classes for busy women were something Saratoga was missing—they’ve come to find that the best part of running the gym is their members. “It’s been great to be able to provide a service that is improving the health of our community, both mentally and physically,” Kissinger says. “It’s extremely rewarding to see everyone grow and progress.” ■ To sign up for your free trial, visit 30minutehit.com/saratogasprings.

BY KATHLE E N WILLCOX when common roots’ Bert and Christian Weber brewed their first beer together as a nod to their German roots, it’s safe to say that the fatherand-son duo couldn’t anticipate what was to come. But since then, their passion for homebrewing has spawned a regional brewing juggernaut that recently opened a brand-new café that starts serving at 7am. This was on the heels of its roll-out of an expansive bierhall, also located across from the

original South Glens Falls taproom. All this hasn’t been easy. In 2014, the Webers opened Common Roots Brewing Company’s taproom doors in South Glens Falls, and quickly became one of the leading craft breweries in the region—only to have their incredible success forced to a screeching halt by a destructive fire just five years later. “The fire devastated us,” Christian says of the inferno, later ruled accidental, that demolished the brewery. But the expansion had already been underway, and as horrific as the fire was, it didn’t hold a candle to the support of the community. Within hours, local beer lovers began raising money to support employees and assist in the rebuilding effort. The show went on, and the plans got bigger. (The experience inspired the Webers to eventually open their own nonprofit to give back to other small businesses in need.) They re-opened in 2020. But they wanted more. This fall, they opened the farmhouse-chic Bierhall & Barrel House, and its café. The expansion is set right across the street from the flagship taproom, joining the already existing biergarten-style

tasting room. All told, the new space seats 160 with a dance floor and outdoor party space. The Common Roots Café, though, is a passion project. “A bunch of us went to coffee-roasting school in New York City,” Christian says. “We decided to open the café because there wasn’t a place in the area to get great coffee and good food in the morning.” Stay tuned for news of the opening of Common Roots’ Albany HQ in the former space of C.H. Evans Brewing Co. “We are excited and humbled to now have a family brewery that dates back to 1786 under the Common Roots ownership,” Bert says, “and be a part of their story moving forward.”

Of course, you can mix a little sweetness into your glass (or glasses) of bubbly; bottomless orange juice, apple cider and cranberry juice mimosas are available. “As for cocktails,” McFadden says, “we do some coffee-themed, sweeter options that give you a little pick-me-up to start your day right.” So, what are you waiting for? Take the newly minted ADK Foot Sanctuary on Phila Street. The cozy retreat is a dream of pure pampering for one’s soles. But behind the scenes lies poignant inspiration straight from the founder’s soul. A lifelong love of Saratoga Springs, as well as a desire to both serve the spirit of the community here while honoring her late mom, inspired Christina Frazier to open her second Upstate New York foot spa here. “I grew up going to Saratoga all the time with my mother,” she says. “We lived in Johnstown, but this was

We had so many wonderful times here.” After spending a few years hitting the slopes in Oregon after high school, Frazier found her groove working in the wellness space, as a trainer touring the world for the Ayurvedic skincare line Sundari. “When I was working and traveling in Singapore, I became entranced with the ritual of foot massage,” she says. “It is an enormous part of the culture and life there.” Frazier pursued a degree in massage therapy and then decided to marry her loves of wellness, energy work, spirituality and healing, first opening a foot massage sanctuary in Bend, which she says was the “culmination of years of work, planning and meditation.” Then she found love with a New Yorker, Mark, and returned home. After selling her Bend foot spa, she opened her first ADK Foot Sanctuary in Lake Placid six years ago. “I always wanted to open a store in Saratoga, but it was never the right time,” she says. “Then my mom got sick, and I nursed her through to the end. After she passed two years ago, I knew it was time. I feel like she has guided this whole process, and opening our doors has been an amazing experience.” Frazier’s Saratoga spa is distinct from the Lake Placid model, although both are deeply focused on foot massage and healing. “They’re different markets,” she says. “Our sanctuary in Saratoga has room for two guests. It’s so intimate and personal. The community has been so welcoming, and I love being on Phila Street, next to amazing neighbors like Bocage.” Stay tuned for collaborations and events with Bocage and others in the future. The open floor plans range from 800 to 3,000 square feet, some with dens and some without, and there are multiple outdoor space options (included in the square footage). The kitchens feature sub-zero ranges, custom cabinets, silestone quartz countertops and Kohler fixtures; the living areas boast seven-inch oak wood flooring, high ceilings and abundant closets. Dubb is the CEO of Long Island’s mega-builder Beechwood Homes but has been coming to Saratoga for 50 years. (In fact, he’s the man behind Union Avenue’s Faith’s House childcare center for backstretch workers.) He envisioned the Adelphi Residences fitting three distinct groups: “people who live in Saratoga who have maybe raised their kids and don’t need a house anymore, racetrack people who come to Saratoga in the summertime and don’t want the responsibility of a house, and people from downstate who want a second home.” So far, that’s panned out, with the residences being scooped up by lovers of Saratoga who want their own piece of the Adelphi—and that tantalizing promise of easy, hotel living. And they know that the preservation of downtown Saratoga is in great hands. “I’ve been coming here since I was a teenager,” Dubb says. “It’s very near and dear.”

while i technically work from home, I’m always slightly amused by where my reporting for SARATOGA LIVING AFTER HOURS takes me: Fish Creek, for the early morning practice of 12 Olympichopeful rowers; Saratoga Polo School, for my first-ever lesson both in riding a horse and hitting a ball while atop one; Congress Park, for a wild duck chase led by a 6-yearold I’d just met; the literal

center of Broadway, to act as both staff photographer and crossing guard to a colony of koalas. When I’m not on my couch (I work from my couch—sue me) I’m usually observing or participating in some sort of shenanigans in Saratoga. But that doesn’t mean I never leave town. Our Substack newsletter is called SARATOGA LIVING AFTER HOURS, but in it we cover stories

outside of Saratoga, in far-flung destinations such as Albany, Latham and, get this: Lake George. Obviously, Albany and Lake George aren’t actually far away, and the culture of those areas unquestionably seeps into the fabric of Saratoga Springs. If an earthquake happens just outside of Saratoga, we still feel it. If a restaurant opens elsewhere in the Capital Region (and beyond!), we still want to eat there. And so, as Saratoga recently entered its slightly sleepier winter season, the SLAH team took it upon ourselves to explore the world beyond the boundaries of our 29-square-mile bubble. We drove north to offer readers a sneak preview of Lake George’s much anticipated Winter’s Dream immersive multimedia experience, even further north to check out the new Lodge at Schroon Lake’s wintertime offerings, and south for the meeting of a book club that’s been going strong for 32 years. (Yes, that’s longer than I’ve been alive.) We profiled two entertainers who aren’t from Saratoga but had upcoming shows here, and over the past year and change have played golf in Albany, watched bocce in Troy, eaten dinner in Latham, previewed the Proctors season in Schenectady, weathered a frigid ice bar excursion in Bolton Landing, and even (fittingly) shined a spotlight on the creative out-of-office email of one passionate Cohoes-based fisherman. Upstate New York, we have to admit, is much more than Saratoga. So, if you’ve been holding off on subscribing to SARATOGA LIVING AFTER HOURS because you don’t think you’re Saratoga enough, throw that thought right out your car window as you drive back to wherever the heck you live. And if Saratoga-specific content is what you’re looking for? Don’t worry. We always find our way back home.
