We hope you appreciate the time, effort, and hard work that has gone into its creation and hope that flipping through these pages will one day remind you of your fondest, most beautiful memories.

Though we may have not been able to capture every single unfading adventure, we hope that some little detail evokes the thought of people you were inspired by, people who empowered you, and those who transformed you. Dear ARIS Community, Welcome to our 2021-2022 ARIS YearBook!

This Yearbook is a glimpse of the many highlights and memorable events of this academic year, and a beautiful record of the students and staff members who formed the Al-Rayan International School community in 2021-22. As you go through its pages, I hope it will remind you of good times with friends, the new people you met and our many sports, cultural, and performing arts events. More importantly, I hope it will remind you of all the learning and growth you have accomplished as you strived to be better in all that you do.

This has been a special year, the year we welcomed everyone back on one campus after two years of disruption and uncertainty. I am very proud of what each of us did in response to the pandemic and what our school achieved, as a community. Resuming fully on campus hasn’t been easy for many of us but we were able to do it together, by supporting each other all throughout and by “building relationships that foster well being and growth”. Well done to you for coming through the year so well, in the face of so many uncertainties and changes. How we respond to life’s many challenges, can only make us stronger and build our confidence.

Despite everything, this year has been a successful year as we resumed many of our activities and events. To those who have, directly or indirectly, enriched the lives of our students this year; the teaching and support staff, the Board of Trustees, PSA members, sports coaches, and to parents and caregivers, we extend our sincere thanks and best wishes. To those returning next year I look forward to seeing you back in August, refreshed and ready to tackle another year of opportunities and challenges. I pay special tribute to those who are leaving us. I hope you feel you have been guided through ARIS, that you have attained the qualifications you were capable of and that you needed, and that you developed the personal qualities and confidence to make the right decisions in life. I hope you will remember with pride and affection the security, support, care, and strength of your ARIS years. To you all I extend my very best wishes for the future.

LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL Dania Sadek Primary Head of School (SMT) & Head of Primary Years Programme

I am delighted and honoured to have been asked to write a message to our Primary students for our Yearbook 2021-2022.

This Yearbook is YourBook as it aims to personalize your fondest memories to celebrate achievements and to provide a memento which we may all look back on fondly in years to come!

Back in the 1970s when I was just like you, enjoying my foundational Primary Years, I often recall the best of times from my Nursery class, playing in that toy house to jumping on the wooden plank and anxiously waiting for my ‘Fan Milk’ before our nap time, to Year 3 Christmas Nativity Play where I took the role of an Angel; yet still in Year 6, fond memories of our excitement and anxiety, as we prepared for the Common Entrance Exams that was our only way into Secondary school, to the great celebration of our school’s 25 year Anniversary, when we dressed up in our diverse traditional and colorful costumes and rode in a truck decorated with a huge head of the Chinese dragon and then more memorable days kept building on...

And so, you will also build up lovely memories from these days.

Indeed school yearbooks are the best of gifts for students, as well as parents, as these yearbooks immortalize the beautiful memories of school days made possible through the dedication of the ARIS community driven by its’ core values and beliefs to inspire, empower and transform for a better world!

My gratitude goes out to our wonderful students, of whom I am so proud, not only for their academic achievements, and never-ending efforts to meet their targets, but also for their many other outstanding achievements in areas such as Music, Arts, Dance and Sports, as well as persevering to attain the attributes of the IB Learner profile! Furthermore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my dedicated, passionate and caring staff, for making this year a success, and I am extremely grateful to all parents for their ongoing support, and to those moving on, we wish them all the very best!

We look forward with hope and prayers, despite the uncertainty of these times for yet another exciting and memorable academic year for 2022-2023.

ARIS Celebrates

Memorial Day

Kwame Nkrumah, born on the 21st of december year 1909, in the small village of Nkroful, grew to become the first president of Ghana and one of the leading reasons it is the Ghana as we call it today; an independent country free from British colonization.

Being his mother’s only child, she sent him to an elementary school run by a catholic mission at Half Assini where he proved to be an adept student. He became increasingly interested in Black nationalism. Eventually after choosing to pursue higher education, he applied for Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and got accepted in the year 1935. He had spent 10 years in the US which historian, John Henrik Clarke, describes as “Ten years that he spent in the United States that would have a lingering effect on the rest of his life.”

After many activist movements and insights on how other Africans view the colonialism over their countries and race, Nkrumah had eventually returned to the then named Gold Coast and led multiple governmental positions and parties such as Convention People’s Party in 1949, and had been a Leader of Government Business and Prime Minister. Although assuming many challenges in the office, he is one of the leading causes towards Ghana’s independence. ~ Written by Rahik Alaa Ibrahim, DP1

Investiture Ceremony After weeks of campaigning, and election, in what could be described as a short, but impactful and significant ceremony, the Student Representative Council for 2021/2022 Academic was invested.

In attendance at this ceremony was the Special Guest Speaker, Mrs. Monorvi Asampong, Director of ARIS Dr. Fatma Odaymat, Chairman of the ARIS Board Mr. Nouhad Kalmoni, who joined virtually, Head of Secondary School Mme Alpana Mukherjee. Also in attendance were members of the Senior Management Team and Faculty.

The ARIS Model UN Club

The idea of Model United Nations (MUN) is to simulate the institutions and committees of the United Nations.

Students research and formulate the Delegates’ position based on the actual countries to debate on worldly issues and come up with resolutions that could, in the real world, be implemented. ARISMUN encourages students to be confident, kind, respectful individuals that grow to become well-equipped with the tools needed to practically solve global problems. This academic year saw the club hosting its very first in-school physical conference, as well as attending the DPSMUN. A huge congratulations to the Club Directors and Secretariat for making this year a largely successful and productive one!

GETTING REAL WITH THE CAST

An insight into the actors behind the characters of Mamma Mia!

Which scene was the most challenging to execute and why?

Bill (Jamal Hassan) : Act 2, Scene 7, because it was a scene that required a lot of improvisation so we had to think on our feet a lot to fill in the gaps it had.

Rosy (Michelle Morrison) : Scene 7, mainly because of the dance steps.

I had to bond with my co-actor on a more personal level, and it got a little bit uncomfortable sometimes. I had to suck it up put on my big girl pants and just go for it!

What kind of improvements did you go through in the process of acting out this play? How would you rate your own acting?

Harry (Omar Halimi) : I’ve gotten more confident with myself when it comes to acting, I learnt how to blend the acting with the singing I would be doing, and working off my scene partners' emotions and energy. I think I'm decent at acting, I have to learn more as this is what I want to do in the future, but I think I’m alright for now. When we recorded however, I realised I was speaking way too fast cause I was nervous and I just wanted to say everything quick and get it done with, so I have to work on my speed and stay calm.

How were you able to manage your time between your part in the play production and your school work?

Harry (Omar Halimi) : I think I managed my time pretty well, especially since I’m a CP student, I was able to balance everything and not feel too overwhelmed as I have a flexible timetable, so it was fine and fun.

Donna (Lea Safwan) : To be honest I didn’t really manage my time. I don’t really have time to manage because I also have other things to do so I try to do them all at once, everything I try to do it at the same day.

For the Covid period, Mamma Mia would be the best one we’ve done and one that we are using to satisfy our parents, our audience. But in terms of the only thing we missed, is our engagement with the audience, because it comes with its unique feel, and it also pushes our actors beyond their bounds, but new things come with new styles, and this is the new way professional theatre is going, and what we have now is comparable to how international theatre is going, so we are good to go.

Which scene was your favourite one to act?

Sam (Anas Husni) : Act 1, scene 3 is the most interesting in my opinion; thats the scene where all the fathers, which I'm one of them, get to know each other. Thats when we meet Donna and Sofie for the first time. There's a dance in the scene, there's a couple of songs, and a lot of events overall so it was very fun to act.

What kind of improvements did you go through in the process of acting out this play? how would you rate your own acting?

Donna (Lea Safwan) : I improved in communication, I used to be very quiet. From 1 to 10, I would rate my self a 4.

Sophie (Claire Asare) : On a scale of 1-10 I would give my acting a 7 because there is still a lot of room for improvement.

How were you able to manage your time between your part in the play production and your school work?

Sophie (Claire Asare) : At the time I was doing another play so I was balancing the two plays plus school work and home life. I have to admit it was hard at first managing my time between all o f them but at some point it became apart of my daily schedule so I got used to it.

MYP 5 Personal Project Exhibition MYP Personal Project is an opportunity for MYP students to work on projects of personal interest in their final year of MYP. These personal projects are year-long projects that MYP students develop in their final year of MYP, and are aimed to help the school community. With a total of about 33 different projects, the students delved into matters relating to, Physical Health, Mental Health, Sports, Engineering, Technology, Women Empowerment, Sexual Health, just to mention a few.

For this exhibition, MYP 5 Year 11 Students displayed all they have learned in their MYP journey through projects that are impactful to them, and that will also help them develop skills necessary to be successful in the MYP. And last, but definitely not least, to Mr. Eddie, you, by far, have had the most patience with me. You brought out a completely new set of skills in art that I never thought I had, and I’m thankful for you pushing me to redo my acrylic painting 3 times until I got it right.
