University of Arkansas - Rome Center

Rome, Italy | September 2024 - December 2024

During the 2024 fall semester of my third year I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad at the University of Arkansas Rome Center in Rome Italy. This school allowed me to meet other students from Thomas Jefferson in the architecture program, 5th and 4th year Architecture, Interior Design and Global Studies students from University of Arkansas and 3rd year Architecture Students from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Through this program I had the opportunity to take 5 immersive courses that expanded my knowledge in interior design and the culture in Italy. Studying in Rome was very immersive because of the rich history towards design and the surrounding urban context. I had the opportunity to have endless on-site explorations, site visits, lessons, and new perspectives from this Rome experience which was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

01 SHOP-IN-SHOP

DESIGN

5, FALL 2024

COLLABORATORS: Andrew Hill

PROGRAMS USED:

Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project is a collaborative project to design a shop-in-shop in the “Rinascente” Department Store in Rome, inside the historical building in the center of the eternal city at via del Tritone. This project is an opportunity to design a store for an international high-end fashion brand. Our group’s brand is Louis Vuitton. The groups first started off researching and analyzing the renowned fashion brand and then began to work on a theoretically-based concept development and detailed project refinement. The group had to study the major characteristics and qualities of the space and analyze its context in terms of immediate physical conditions and larger Roman fashion retail scene. Overall, the groups need to propose a temporary organization of the space for a unique shopping experience design that reflects the client’s brand and the context of the existing Roman retail landscape.

CONCEPT:

Louis Vuitton is known for creating luxury products that embodies craftsmanship, innovation, and a timeless design. This shopin-shop is designed for those who are seeking a sense of escape and adventure, offering an experience that connects back to the brand’s origins of luxury and travel. Our design focuses on the rich history of Louis Vuitton, drawing inspiration from its origins as a luggage brand. We aim to evoke a sense of escape and adventure, guiding the experience of the shop through the lens of their legacy.

PROCESS

RINASCENTE

Rinascente started out in 1865 by The Ferdianando Brothers as their first tailoring and fabric shop in Milan. As they became more popular, they opened up and became inaugurated into a department store. As the years passed, they changed their name to La Rinascente and opened in Piazza del Duomo. This area is highly populated with tourist, which makes it a perfect spot for the luxury stores.

LOUIS VUITTON

Louis Vuitton is a luxury fashion brand which sells high-quality goods to a wide range of customers. Products are individually handmade. Its origins started as a trunk maker and this heritage is an important part of its brand. Craftsmanship and quality are the core of the brand’s success with the brands commitment to handcrafting, materials, techniques, and attention to detail.

02 SMALL MEDICAL OFFICE - AUDIOLOGIST

DESIGN 4, SPRING 2024

PROGRAMS USED

Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project is a Small Medical Office, specifically an audiologist office, which can serve all age demographics at this clinic. Through extensive research on the ergonomics, standards, guidelines and evidence based design on an audiologist office and design, the design was created. The Small Medical Office project is for two clients who are physicians who have partnered up to own their own medical office which is located on the second floor of 709715 North 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA. Using contemporary forms, colors, lighting, and materials, they want a space designed that provides the feeling of a calm, comfortable, and a positive experience for all guests.

CONCEPT:

A patient’s hearing ability is tested through an audiometer test. The results are shapes that demonstrates the hearing ability. The function of this space incorporates the shapes as a way to guide the patient through the journey of an audiologist visit.

PROCESS

Idea is developed from these photos, which is from an Audiometer Test. This tests a person’s hearing ability by playing sounds at different frequencies and volumes. The results are plotted on a graph called an Audiogram which has symbols that the “X” represents the left year, an “O” that represents the right ear and an “S” which indicates that the result is measured through a speaker, which means both ears are used so it is non ear specific.

STUDY MODEL 1

This study model was focused on the different shapes of the Audiometer Test and incorporated these shapes into the room designs. This concept was also incorporated into the acoustical ceiling design and on the acoustic panels in the exam rooms.

STUDY MODEL 2

This study model was focused with the idea of sound waves and that defines the rooms and circulation flow.

The color scheme is a monochromatic green color scheme with the use of neutral colors of white, cream, and light gray. The addition of light wood tones in the space compliments the light green color scheme and adds warmth to the space.

STUDY MODEL 3

This study model focused on the shape of the ear and the curves. This was an abstract focus on the inner part of the ear shape and was used to define the spaces and layout.

03 INTERCULTURAL RESTAURANT: SUYA SUYA

DESIGN 3, FALL 2024

COLLABORATORS:

Kelly Harrington (INTD)

MJ Carafa (VCD)

PROGRAMS USED:

SketchUp, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project was a collaboration between sophomore interior design students and a senior visual communication design student. Together the INTD and VCD student groups are tasked with researching, conceptualizing, and designing a comprehensive and cohesive design system for an assigned restaurant. The design system harmoniously communicates the essence of the assigned cuisine, immersing customers in an authentic and memorable dining experience through both graphic and interior touch points as a whole. The design took inspiration from the culture and food of an existing Philadelphia West African restaurant. This restaurant is called Suya Suya is located in Northern Liberties serving up one of West Africa’s most popular street foods.

‘Suya’ is a grilled meat skewer that originated in Nigeria and later became popular throughout Western Africa. The project is located in an existing two story building in Old City Philadelphia, 201 N 3rd Street, Philadelphia PA, 19107.

CONCEPT:

West African culture is full of community, life, movement, and dance. By incorporating these factors, the design invokes a safe place full of cultural comfort that brings pride through bold patterns, decor, and colors.

PROCESS

The takeaways from the research used in the project were the vibrant colors, patterns, textiles, cooking outside of the home, dance, and rhythm.

The color scheme is warm tones, where the majority of the colors are orange, yellow and reds, with brown tones.

MISCELLANEOUS - HAND DRAWING - ROME

VISUAL JOURNALING, FALL 2024

Hand Drawing CLASS DESCRIPTION:

During my semester abroad in Rome, this class offered a unique, approach to learning and improving hand drawing architecture. Each week, we explored different locations across Rome which helped immerse ourselves into the architecture and history all around us. Each class we would spend time observing and sketching perspectives, elevations, sections, and details, translating what we saw in front of us onto paper. While the class presented its challenges, I noticed steady improvement in my drawing skills each week. This experience deepened my understanding of spatial relationships and enhanced my ability to capture them through drawing.
