SARAH KIRBY
MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY
GRADUATE FALL 2022
PERSONAL STATEMENT
There is a concept I recently learned about called Ikigai, a Japanese concept that refers to the purpose of being. This allows one to find balance with what they love, what the world needs, what you can be paid for, and what you are good at. It made me realize that Interior design is more than just my passion – it is also my mission, vocation, and future profession. This is something that excites, challenges, and teaches me everyday. The more I learn, the more I want to push the boundaries of what design can be and do for those who interact with it.
Everyday, I am reassured that choosing the paths of Interior Design and philosophy were the best decision I could have made. Both ask the questions on what humans need and what is the best way to care for them. The best part is that the questions will never stop. There will always be a need to learn, change, and care for people. Being part of the Interior Design community at Marymount has sharpened not only my Revit skills, but also enriched my love to design for people who have many identities and backgrounds worthy of celebrating. I understand how the importance of identity and self are valued in a world that does not reflect back so kindly. I aim to challenge design in ways that can allow for more diversity and equity for all identities and communities of people.
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

Important questions to be answered
Rethinking the design process
Architecture and
sexuality
Form follows action, Materiality & Metaphor, Identity/Sense of self, Territoriality, Unity
Research Summary
How can identity be expressed through architecture/form?
Materiality
Territoriality
Identity/sense of self theory
How can design be gender neutral?
eliminate bias of the function as a space creating a space with no restrictions
Form follows action
In what ways can the interior design process improve on understanding identity and incorporating identity throughout the whole design process?
Focus on the identity/body throughout the whole process similar to the fashion design process of tailoring and fitting phases

Form
The acpect of Identity, expression, and individuality is in constant motion and change
When developing a parti and starting my deign process, I wanted to demonstrate how identity can take form and bend through a space - just as a person would in their own experiences
Materiality (+) metaphor
Identity/sense of self
Unity
Territoriality
form follows action
Existing Building
With the task of respecting the existing building, I explored the grid and modular plans and elevations Working with the idea of breaking the boundaries of a modular building shell to create forms that would build from and juxtapose those shapes.
Metaphor: Constraints of societal norms vs Identity
Folded spiral is another way to represent a circle for unity and community
Mission
The goal of Younity LGBTQ+ Community Center is to provide support for individuals who are dealing with homelessness, unemployment, healthcare, physical/mental disabilities, and acceptance. This center will be located in Tampa, Florida. The Younity LGBTQ+ Community Center will strengthen the community and prove that regardless of your medical/physical/mental condition, age, skin color, race, gender, and sexual orientation – you are a human worthy of love and acceptance.

Vision
The Younity LGBTQ+ Community Center will be a resource for aid, growth, and knowledge for those part of the LGBTQ+ community, family members, and those who would want to learn more and be engaged with the community.
Concept
My concept for this project is Form Follows Action. Being inspired from my research, my focus was to find an action word that represented how the space and users would interact with one another. Bend.

Conclusion
After finishing my Senior Capstone project, I believe that exploring identity through form can be done in many ways. I chose Form Follows Action as one way to solve my design problem, and I found that there could be many ways to interpret it. Reflecting on my work, I look at something that is in a state of needing constant changes - I don't belive it to be 'finished' or will it ever be finished. Understanding or trying to understand the multitude of identity and expression will be a constant pursuit of changing, deconstructing, and experimentation. People are capable of changing and adapting, so our spaces that support the idea of identity will need to be flexible to that change as well.

Respite UMD Medical Center
Spring 2022
The staff respite room of the future. These Respite rooms designs are to promote mindfulness and productivity in the Healthcare Workplace. In this design, I took the already exsisting floorpans of the UMD Medical Center and added three respite rooms for the healthcare workers.
Project 3
Concept
My concept for for my design is compression and release. This is demonstrated through:
The colors blue and orange

Concept
My concept came from the saying "Keep Portland Weird"
Weird often doesn't have any rules, but I wanted to create a fun social space that felt like it held no limitations to the imagination.
To enforce this idea, made the ceiling beams extend beyond the exterior walls.
