CIRCLES ON THE GREEN CLAREMONT COMMUNITY GARDEN

CLAREMONT COMMUNITY GARDEN

CIRCLES ON THE GREEN

This proposal for the Claremont Community Garden, titled Circles on the Green, draws on the “Circle” metaphor, as outlined in Emerson’s 1840 essay of reflection on life and change. The idea of life surprises, learning, conversations, the game of bowls, and the generations of residents gathering on the bowling green are evident in our approach to the Community Garden strategy and design.

The masterplan takes reference from the “Spider” Game of Lawn Bowls, where all the participants are positioned at the edges of the green and upon a new agreement, or genesis, all deliver a bowl towards a jack positioned in the centre of the green.

Each “circle/bowl” across the green has its design cue in the pattern etchings pressed into lawn bowls, scattered as they fall, to form a profile of significant spheres that capture an era or spirit of Claremont memories including:

• The ancestors of the Tradition Owners - the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation - camping by the ‘Bilya”,

• The rose and memorial gardens of ANZAC day,

• The kitchen gardens of the settlers’ heritage homesteads,

• The sculptural mound of play with a subtle reference to the old Claremont School of Art, and

• Finally, a new future of Rewilding, Education, Sharing and Gathering.

Circles on the Green is designed to become a permanent reminder of the stories of this place and a sustainable vision for the future.

SCALE: 1:200

“JACK” - THE WHITE GATHERING SPACE in the centre of the new green sits a crisp white event space, with a cascade of Hardenbergia ‘white out’ providing shade and a feature over the trellis.

“BILYA” - RIVER MEMORIES GARDEN - an introduced stoned seasonal dampland leads from “The Jack” to a circle of the past, the reeds and rushes of Freshwater Bay, and a place for reflection and contemplation of Noongar connection to country and a time before colonialisation of Claremont.

“MEMORIES” - MEMORIAL GARDEN - the dampland provides a gentle bowling ball “kiss” between the Memorial Circle and the River Memories. The Memorial Garden features the plants of memory, war and peace, including the bright colours of Poppies, Nasturtiums, Rosemary and Olives - dappled in the light of the Darling Range Ghost Gums.

“RE-WILD” - EDUCATION GARDEN - adjacent to Freshwater Bay Primary School’s side and an installed Native Bee Hotel, the Re-Wild Garden is filled with species to improve biodiversity, understand a changing climate and non-human functions and benefits of our gardens.

“KITCHEN” PRODUCE GARDEN the Kitchen Garden is a produce garden, providing colour and vibrancy but also local produce for the Farmers Market, the Cafe and the opportunity for the Primary School to initiate a Stephanie Alexander style Kitchen Garden program.

“SCULPTURE” - THE GREEN MOUND - The Green Mound is a fun play on sculpture and the use of turf to create a circle of play and activity. It acts as a barrier to the road and place that could grow into a quirky sculptural garden, with a nod to the site’s history.

“THE MAT” - PLAY GARDEN - Stepping down from the Claremont Community Centre Veranda is The Mat a place to get ready to bowl, line up the perfect shot in the sun and for children to play and gather between the Centre and the Garden.

“THE GROVE” - CARNABY’S NUT FOREST Like a secret forest, the stairs will lead to a circular forest of nut trees planted to provide feed, nesting and shelter for the endangered Carnaby Cockatoos in the area. The circular forest is designed to be planted out by the community each year, to remember families, loved ones and provide the context of time and its passing.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

We acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the Traditional Owners of this place and pay my respects to the elders past and present who have cared for this country and its people, and upon which we have the opportunity to learn and study.
