A focal point of empowerment for Southwark’s marginalised communities, where they may write, publish and own their stories, thus creating an archive of unwritten histories. Reclaiming what is becoming an increasingly exclusive area.

The brief was inspired by the concept of ‘neighbourhood’ and what this means in todays city context.

I began exploring ideas about the five elements of a Moroccan neighbourhood, hammam, school, mosque, fountain, and bakery. I was interested in the plan of AlQarawiyyin University (the oldest remaining university), with the mosque, school and fountain being interconnected. I was also fascinated with the intricacy of mathematical drawings by early Islamic scholars, the diagrams look as though they could be building plans, sections or details. These ideas about intricacy and mathematics, led me to create models that expressed this sense.

Analysing the social demographic of Borough, south of the touristic riverside, the area is dotted with housing estates of various sizes.

Local charities have reported that the economic divide between the north and south has become more pronounced in recent years with increased youth violence and crime.

After discovering an initiative by a company named ‘Freedom and Balance’ I was able to identify my program.

The group set monthly creative tasks, including turning two estates into publishing houses.

My proposal would be a community publishing house for Borough’s marginalised communities.

Site analysis of demographic & users.

Having been inspired by the industrial heritage of the site I was keen to utilise the structure and symbolism of gas-holders and their sheer size.

The final gas-holder structure was appropriated and adjusted- based on a double ring system, an inner and outer gas-holder into which building modules could be slotted. Overtime, the use of this complex could adapt as more building modules are slotted into the remaining upper levels.

The publishing house functions as petal like slots fitted into a gas-holder structure. the central courtyard becomes a gathering space for events but is also the circulation core with ramps spiralling up the inside of the structure. The back of the site accomodates a sports ground, play ground, and flower garden. The complex is open to the public daily.

I researched the possibilities of inflatable ETFE architecture that allows the building to ‘breathe’ and ‘glow’.

The first method I used was letting the ventilation inflate and deflate bubble skins, meaning the building would morph depending on the number of people in the space.

The second method is a more traditional use of ETFE cushions that can be inflated with Nitrogen creating a fog that acts as solar shade.

I am interested in investigating how Look! It’s breathing!!

materiality and fabrication can create dream-like environments, adding a fourth dimension to how we interact with the space.

My third-year proposal stemmed from responding to a political film: ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ which posed questions about our so-called global development and progress.

The film records scenes of nature, wilderness, cities, poverty, wealth and chaos for 1.27 hours to a musical composition by Phillip Glass.

Exploring the film’s natural scenes of the four corners USA, I became fascinated in researching the violation of this landscape due to uncontrolled human consumption.

Mapping the expansive landscape by hand, I became aware of the now dry and damned state of the once thriving and gushing Colorado river.

My research on the Colorado river led me to discover the ‘Pulse flow’ experiment, where the last dam on the river (Morelos Dam) was opened and a steady flow of water could trickle out. After 53 days the water reaches it’s barren delta for the first time in 50 years.

The ritual that ensued was fascinating, crowds gathered under bridges along the dry riverbed awaiting the great arrival of the river. First a trickle, then a pond and eventually a river- children played in it for the first time and animals came to drink.

I imposed this vision of a life-giving water onto our urban Southwark site. An oasis sprung up besides the rapidly urbanising touristic and corporate district where nature has been shut out.

Similar to the Colorado the Thames has been channeled and streamlined overtime. Looking at images of east end children enjoying the Thames, or horses drinking from it, highlighted a relationship to river that seems to no longer exist.

Exploring the relationship of the site to water, I became aware of a lost tributary of the Thames that ran around the site: the Neckinger river.

Investigating the history of this body I discovered the Jacobs Island, a man-made ditch that would flood with the tide. I was fascinated by the shacklike and precarious architecture of the island, which helped me form the language for my design.

When it rains the water runs off rooves and pavements, along gutters and off into drains.

Rain may gather in puddles, but besides this rainfall is often ignored or even considered a nuisance. This proposal is about breaking this barrier and allowing users to experience the joy of rainfall, detailing rooves as funnels and using rain chains- letting the water pour,

Marsh visitors can immerse themselves in the wander of un-diverted rain, through the experiential galleries, using the pool or sitting among the tranquil wetlands.

Final proposal.

A gallery, residence and studio for Photographer Dennis Morris. Inspired by Morris’s street photography, the public are able to pass under the studio and residence to access the Eastern Curve garden on the other side and observe his work as they do.

Legacy: Djemaa el-Kébir is an excellent specimen of Almoravid architecture, and one of the few that can still be found in North Africa. It stands as the oldest mosque in the city and second oldest in the country.

TOOLS: CNC MACHINE, WOOD WORKSHOP MATERIALS: PLYWOOD AND ETFE STRIPS This itteration of the roof is based on the intial given design. We focused on deciding on our main joinery system as a start. After many itterations and concepts we decided the rod and dowels were TIMBER FRAME most effective, simple, and ensured Xwe3 could work without screws and bolts. Meaning the pavilion can be even more easilly assembled and de-assembled. we also liked the way the dowels added to the rythem of the deisgn without being bulky or overpowering connections. Prior to this we looked t traditional joints that we expressed in the previous spread. We have fully exceuted this particular design, it works structutrally and can be built by anyone. It is the most resolved of our itterations.

Masjid El Kebir, meaning the Great Mosque is the building that has inspired the initial zig zag roof form. Building on this formation we began to experiment with ways in which it can be warped and abstracted and how rainfall could be channelled. The roof is covered in tiles however we considered using a light wieght solid sheet of metal to achieve more complex folded plate
