AL JADAD AL RUSTAQ, OMAN
Al-Jadad is a mixed-use hub in Rustaq, Oman. Located in what used to be an abandoned date factory, it sparked the inspiration behind the concept of the space : a date museum. The site is large enough to also accomodate a contemporary art gallery and a commercial space.
The aim of this project is to create a space where people can gather and come together through integrating different functions and a lively outdoor space, which is why it is called ‘AlJadad’ - meaning the gathering of dates when harvesting in Arabic, whilst also conserving the spirit of the old date factory through the industrial look of the buildings.
The final project consists of three main buildings - one of which is completely pre-exisitng with minor changes, one is completely new, and the final building is new, but uses the old construction of the date factory as its facade, since it functions as the date museum. The new building houses the contemporary art gallery, commercial spaces as well as offices and facilities for the gallery and museum.

PROJECT VISUALIZATIONS
One of the main concepts is to take what was holding the old date museum structure all these years - the ‹ steel skeleton › - and make it the main feature as the date museums facade. A second feature is the bridge connecting the museum and gallery, this bridge also acts as an outdoor gallery space.
Waffle beams allow for a larger exhibition space, but also allow for skylights with indirect sunlight - perfect for art galleries. The final feature is the addition of glass blocks, both in the art gallery, and the outdoor commercial space. The glass blocks add a special feature in the new building without taking away from the main attraction - the date museum and its steel facade.

Found Outside Donderberg Park
Whilst at first glance the area seems to have large green spaces, these spaces all seem to be hard to get to or use. The largest green spaces are a graveyard, Donderberg Park and a green space with a small ‘river’. These areas are all underutilised, hard to access or are fully restricted areas.

There are more than 260 collective and family gardens in the Brussels Region. Collective projects are managed by resident committees, schools, social welfare centres, enterprises, associations, etc., most of which are supported through calls for projects. These spaces are related to pleasure and conviviality: shared moments with family, friends or neighbours, for gourmet, fun or educational moments.

We proposed an idea aimed at enhancing community life, where some spaces can be given a bigger purpose that will serve the community such as Bockstael square and the empty area. These spaces lack some elements that make them inviting and comfortable.

Donderberg, has a deep history as being an old tree nursery for the royal gardens. This green space has been untouched for around 50 years, but is also closed to the public. Donderberg is set out to become a construction for the nearby school as well as a parking space. There has been action and initiaives to stop this project since it endangers some of the only green left within the city.
These areas dont seem to be well maintaned and no clear entry point can be found. To better utilise these abandoned green spaces, being open to the public, a welcoming accessible entry, pedestrian paths, and gardening intitatives can be added.

SOLUTION
URBAN GARDENS
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
This project was carried out in collaboration with the University of Hasselt, where we compared our proposals with those of their students to explore various approaches to enhancing the area. We were tasked with analyzing and improving a designated area within the radius of a train station in Brussels, in our case: Bockstael Station.
We identified three underutilized spaces: an abandoned park, Donderberg, once part of the royal gardens and untouched for over 50 years, featuring rich soil; a plaza near the train station, used now mainly for parking; and Annie Cordy Park, located next to the main church and royal graveyard, now surrounded by roads and car infrastructure.
These three spaces form the core of our project, Urban Gardens. This green initiative aims to open up previously inaccessible green areas, expand the local gardening community, and promote food security to boost the local economy. It also seeks to strengthen community ties and encourage a more active lifestyle through the addition of bike lanes and pedestrian paths.

MASTER PLAN
LEGEND
The main idea for the program in Urban Gardens is to introduce the concept of rental gardens and greenhouses (1 & 2). The gardening community can then commute, using bike lanes, and sell their harvests at the weekly market in the square (3).
