I

n a 2013 interview about her book, Blue Plate Special, Maine writer Kate Christensen, told Bon Appétit, “I think there’s a part of my brain where food, language and memory all intersect, and it’s very powerful. I think I’m not alone in this.”

She most definitely is not. When I reminisce about places I have visited, it is the food that first comes to mind: the raclette in Switzerland, the poke on Maui, the poached rhubarb with thick, fresh cream served for breakfast by one of my English great aunts. These food memories are gateways to recalling the entire experience, and they also stand alone as highlights of my life.

Some of my most memory-making meals have been, of course, right here in Maine. As a little girl, I learned how to eat lobster on the deck at Robinson’s Wharf on Southport Island, and to this day, I still start the same way—sucking the sweet bits of meat out of the legs. On a spectacular autumn weekend a few

years ago, my husband, Ted, and I hiked up to Stratton Brook Hut for the annual Maine Huts and Trails Harvest at the Huts, a multicourse feast that included Maine oysters with wild blueberry mignonette and fresh pappardelle with locally raised rabbit. And for a recent birthday, we began with scallop crudo and chef Fred Eliot’s pâté en croûte at Scales, followed by roasted whole fish at Fore Street. Reliving all of these experiences reminds me again how lucky I am to live in a state where good food and people who are passionate about preparing it are both so abundant. And I know I’m not alone.

Whether you live in Maine or visit here, I hope you will use this annual guide to add to your own food experiences, creating more memories that will nourish and sustain you.

Brunch brings a crowd that clamors for creative pancakes and waffles, crab cake Benedict, burgers, and the baconinfused Bloody Mary.

The menu features many of the same Caribbean-style dishes, with tropical cocktails to match.

His novel Empire Falls won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2002.

His most recent book of stories, Trajectory, was published in spring 2018 by Knopf and his new collection of essays, The Destiny Thief, was scheduled to come out in May. He's currently at work on a new novel.

Top-notch baked goods, including wedding and birthday cakes, are the cafe’s foundation, but you’ll find a nice selection of sandwiches and salads as well. There’s a full-service coffee bar, an ice cream bar, and yes, there are dogs.

Perched above Rockport harbor, 18 Central is just two years old, but the comfortable space feels like it’s been there forever, with worn wooden floors, a stamped tin ceiling, and schoolhouse pendant lights. Much of chefowner Patrick Duffy’s menu is prepared on a wood-fired grill in the open kitchen, including tomatoes for the cocktail sauce offered with selections from the raw bar. An exception is the excellent fried chicken, served with collard greens and grits.

It’s known for its superlative flatbread pizzas and handmade pasta in preparations such as puttanesca with seafood. The owners have gone to painstaking lengths to create a variety of gluten-free options, ranging from pasta to every delicious dessert on the list.

Creative cocktails and a wellcurated wine list that, appropriately, leans Italian, complement the menu.

Landlubbers will appreciate the good selection of wood-grilled steaks and burgers. The wine list is heavy on sparklers and Old World whites, just right for a good raw bar.

The buttery roll cradles the sweet meat of an entire lobster, butter or mayo on the side. Fried clams, scallops, and non-seafood items are available, too, all for enjoying on the patio out back. It’s worth every minute of the wait.

While there is some seating inside, the place to be is out on the wharf, where the U-shaped zinc-topped bar makes an ideal spot to watch the boats go by while sipping a Dark and Stormy. The blackened haddock tacos get high marks, as do the fried whole-belly clams and everything from the raw bar.

Robinson’s Wharf

T

he Story: The story begins in 2005 for the owners of Delvino’s, Anthony Jacovino & Tina DelSanto. Anthony went to The Lookout Pub (recently renamed The Front Street Pub) to visit his friend Katherine Loblein. The visit yielded an introduction to Katherine’s business partner, Tina DelSanto. As it turns out, Anthony and Tina were both looking for apartments… you guessed it! Tina and Anthony became apartment mates and friends and fell in love. Then comes the restaurant.

Fast-forward a few years to The Lookout, again, where Tina meets Bruce Thomas, another bona fide Belfast Lover. It’s 2010, and Belfast is once again going through a transformation. Bruce had recently bought a building that he knew the couple was dying to put a restaurant in. Over many months of working with Bruce, Tina and Anthony opened Delvino’s Grill & Pasta House in June of 2010. THE FOOD: Delvino’s: Stepping through the doors you might think you are in New York or Boston but you’re actually in Delvino’s Grill and Pasta House in beautiful downtown Belfast. Delvino’s is the perfect date night, family gathering, relaxing, upscale location with creative food, located in the historical downtown within walking distance from the harbor. The restaurant is in a circa 1865 brick building. Delvino’s takes advantage of everything the community has to offer: lobster and mussels harvested from our harbor, as well as produce, meats and cheeses sourced locally which add flare to an eclectic Italian menu.
