Gold For The Old Vic Inn It was a big night for Cabonne at the 2015 NSW Inland Tourism Awards with both Cabonne businesses nominated winning gold in their categories. Old Vic Inn was announced as the winner of the Standard Accommodation category, while Lakeview Luxury Apartments near Orange won the Hosted Accommodation category. The Vineyard Motel in Cowra also received an Encouragement Award in this category.

The Awards were held in Broken Hill NSW over the weekend. The awards presentation on Saturday night was hosted by television celebrity Mike Whitney and the winners were invited to a Winners Breakfast on Sunday morning.

Old Vic Inn proprietors Graeme and Alison Beasley are still enjoying the trip home from Broken Hill but are said to be “pretty ecstatic” about the success of the Awards Night.

“It means we are finalists in the NSW Tourism Awards,” said Jennifer Beasley, “so we will be going up against finalists in every area next. If we win that, we will be finalists for the Australian awards.”

There are more than 20 categories in the awards, including Tourist Attractions, Festivals & Events, Ecotourism and various Accommodation categories encompassing the four major regional areas of NSW; Central, Riverina, Inland and Murray.

The Tourism Judge from Inland Tourism was impressed with the Old Vic Inn after meeting with Alison and Graeme, staying overnight and using the amenities on offer.

The Inland Tourism Awards is an annual event that acknowledges excellence in tourism across the four regional tourism areas of NSW.

Dear Editor This was my entry into the ‘expired card’ stakes earlier this year.

After a bit more too-and-fro’ing the company capitulated, following my threat of a social forum back-lash.

I knew at the time of writing it that the term ‘promissory note’ had no legal standing, but Law Lord Denning did say that “all things reasonable to reasonable men”; a legal tenet.

So everybody should pursue the companies offering such cards when their time expires because they are a substitute for ‘cash’.

I presented a Gift Card at a checkout of a major chain store valued at $10.

This card was flagged as ‘expired’, so I was forced to settle the docket total with cash rather than reconcile the card + cash difference.

This ‘expiry’ made me realise that; • When the card was ‘purchased’ it was with ‘cash’ in one form or another • This company sourced ‘cash’ that had no expiry date

I demand that this company surrender the original ‘cash’ or it’s replacement to me or, as the Company sees fit, supply to me a form of the Gift Card that has no expiry applicable for me to use to recover the original value of cash tendered.

Let us not get into a discussion on “Terms and Conditions” as I did not purchase the card which was gifted to me and it is unreasonable to expect me to search these out or for any gift I might receive.

The cash I used to settle the purchase has no ‘expiry date’ and is the ‘coin of the realm’ which your Gift Card purported to be.

Flashing lights are being installed at 11 schools across Cabonne this week including the Cargo, Cudal and Eugowra Public Schools alerting motorists of the 40km speed limit during school drop off and pick up times.

Installing these lights in school zones has shown to improve driver awareness of the need to travel at a lower speed to ensure the safety of children and others coming and going from the school area.

Australian author Kylie Tennant wrote the novel “Tiburon” in the 1930s while living in a room at the Canowindra Hotel, looking across to the railway station. “Tiburon” is a fictional town based on the real townships and people of Canowindra and Coonabarabran in that period. Virginia Cullane Bookshop is hosting a display prepared by Debbie Rutter on behalf of Canowindra Historical Society. There will be information on Kylie Tennant and the book “Tiburon” and various editions of the book on display. Everyone is invited to drop in for a look.

Canowindra’s Allan & Debbie Symons are still on the road. “We have been at Dundee Beach NT for 2 weeks now and have 2 or 3 weeks left here depending on the fishing,” Allan wrote. “Dundee Beach is 140km west of Darwin fronting the Timor Sea. Our caravan site is only 100 metres from the water. We’ve caught a few fish; last Wednesday we had a 5 foot reef shark on the line but he got himself off as he rushed towards the rocks. When we arrived there was a large combined Australian, American and Japanese military exercise happening – 20,000 mixed service personnel using Dundee Beach as their training ground. There have been continual bush fires in the area and rather close.” Debbie and Allan were forced to drive 140kms to buy a WiFi dongle to enable them to send this update!

Surfs Up At Canowindra For those of you that have noticed and wondered why a Cronulla surfboat has been around the streets of Canowindra recently, it’s not because someone took a wrong turn and is seriously lost!

It’s because Canowindra now has its very own surfboat!

Canowindra resident Matt Rice who used to race in this exact boat has been given it

by Cronulla and plans to teach anyone interested in learning how to row.

“I think it’s a great opportunity that country people normally would never be able to do,” Matt said. “Rowing is a fantastic sport involving nearly all the muscles in the body. It requires mental focus and can build lifelong friendships.”

The plan is to learn the technique on the rowing machine first at Matt’s gym then take the boat to Lake Canobolas and everyone can have a go, followed by a picnic.

He plans to introduce the surfboat to the Bush Nippers in Orange in summer and jokes about rowing it down the Belubula River

when it’s in flood.

Cronulla Surf Club has extended an invitation stating that if any team becomes competent at rowing, they would be delighted to take that team out in the surf and crack a real wave.

“So there’s the challenge! Some at Cronulla were hesitant at giving me the boat,” said Matt.

Matt has competed at world championships, won a state gold and silver medal, won three Sydney branch championships and one metropolitan gold medal all in this very boat, proving she’s no slug!

“Normally you have to be 16 years or older to start learning how to row the surfboat,” says Matt, “but here in Canowindra, Lake Canobolas and Wyangala Dam we can teach anyone, even kids!”

Tony Grant, President of the Canowindra Pythons Walla Juniors team is ecstatic after the team received sponsorship from the Senior Pythons team.

“The juniors would like to thank the seniors for being so generous and supportive of the Junior Club,” Tony said. “The sponsorship will cover the insurance and registration of all the 7’s, 9’s and 11’s.”

Graham Rice, Treasurer of the Pythons senior team handed the cheque over to Tony Grant this week. “We donated the money to encourage junior football participation,” Graham said. “Sport in general is good development for character and teaches kids good future life skills.”

The Junior Pythons are proud to be hosting the Central West Rugby Union Walla Rugby teams to their annual Gala Day. Everyone is invited to get out to the Canowindra Sports Complex to support kids and sports in the community this Sunday from 9am. With a raffle, fun foods and a Lion’s Club jumping castle, this is a great day out for the whole family.

Go Grease Lightning!

There is a lot of excitement building in the town with Tommy Jeffs aka Talulah’s production of Grease coming soon, and plenty of locals are taking part. Tommy is so excited he had to buy a pair of incontinence pads from the local Pharmacy.

This is the final major fundraiser to help pay for the upgrades to the Canowindra Bowling Club. Anyone who has been in there in the last few weeks may have noticed the new curtains. The painting will be completed in the next week and this fundraiser will pay for the carpet.

A spread of fabulous Italian pastas and salads will be served, followed by the show of Grease with Terry Lovett’s music.

“Come and sing along with all your favourites!” Tommy said. “This is going to be such a fun night for all ages so get your staff and your families together and make a real night of it!”

Everyone is invited to dust off their swing skirts and cardigan sweaters and dress in their favourite 50’s fashion.

The show will take place on Saturday 5 September from 6:30pm.

Tickets are $35 each and are available at Deli Lama today. Tickets are selling so don’t miss out on this fantastic evening of food and entertainment.

Free Microchipping Next week is Local Government Week 2015 and to honour the occasion Cabonne Council is offering pet owners in the Shire free microchipping for their dogs and cats as well as financial assistance to have them desexed.

According to Cabonne Mayor Michael Hayes, an estimated 100,000 cats and 80,000 dogs are euthanised in pounds and shelters around Australia every year. Many are said to have been surrendered because financial circumstances prevented owners from having their pets desexed.

“Research has shown desexed cats and dogs are less likely to roam, get into fights, be hit by cars or impounded,” Cr Hayes said.

“Encouraging responsible pet ownership and administering the Companion Animals Act is a cornerstone of Local Government in NSW,” said Cabonne Council Communications & Media Officer Dale Jones. “While many people are aware councils manage rates, roads and rubbish, the breadth and diversity of their work often goes unrecognised.”

Local Government Week gives Councils the chance to promote the importance of councils to residents, ratepayers, businesses and the wider community as a whole. Cr Hayes said this was the perfect opportunity to give something back to the community, ensuring that the Shire’s cats and dogs are microchipped and registered.

Pet owners will be limited to two free microchipping and discount desexing vouchers.

The Council will provide $100 to desex a female dog, $50 for a male dog or female cat and $25 for a male cat. Pet owners must also provide proof of residence within Cabonne to receive the vouchers.

This offer will be available during the first week of August in conjunction with Local Government Week which runs from 3-9 August. Enquire at the Council’s Molong office or call 6392 3200 after Monday 3 August.

Pet-owners are encouraged not to hesitate as a limited number of vouchers is available.

NSW Women’s Hockey Masters Cowra and Canowindra women’s hockey players teamed up for a stunning weekend of Masters Hockey at the State Championships in Bathurst over the weekend.

The carnival was a four day event, with 117 teams over five different age groups from over 35’s to over 55’s, sixteen different divisions representing approximately 1600 veteran players.

Having only enough to field one side, and with only one sub, Cowra women aged between 33 and 50 needed to play in the younger age group of over 35’s. An exemption was granted for the one under age player Tracy Lamb whose skill with a stick proved to be a great asset to the team.

The weekend provided the ladies with an opportunity for fast, competitive play against other players of similar age and skill. This is a rare occasion as the Cowra competition, shared by the Canowindra players, is a competition of mixed ages and gender.

The forward line of Lisa Starr, Lisa Robertson, Elka Johnstone, Sally Scammell, Terina Johnstone and Ashley Wright were superb

in working between themselves and Maxine Sanford, Cherie McCabe and Tracey Lamb in the halves for a fast flowing, action packed games.

With the reliability of Maxine, Lisa Starr, Cherie and Ashley (with Ashley only in her second year of hockey), the stick work of Lisa Robertson, Elka and Terina Johsntone and Tracy Lamb were a perfect combination for a competitive team. Add the rock solid defense of Amara Flannery and the keeping skills of Di Clark, and Cowra was definitely in there with a chance.

Despite coming 5th in their division, all games could have gone either way and Cowra certainly did themselves proud in tough competition, primarily on an artificial surface favoured by the vast majority of their rivals and rarely played on by the Cowra players.

Under the expert tutelage of Noel, the Cowra Women’s team is increasing its knowledge of the sport and looks optimistically towards the future years at the State Championships.

With a few minutes left on the clock, Canowindra tried hard to equal the scores but their last kick found the Trundle player instead and when the siren sounded, the score was 13-12

On Saturday the Canowindra Tigers travelled to Trundle to consolidate their 3rd place on the ladder. The defence was the best it’s been all year with neither side giving an inch.

After some bone-rattling tackles a kick went up from Trundle, who ran away to score under the post, taking the first lead 6-0.

Trundle increased their lead with a lapse in defence for them to post a second try and conversion, taking the score to 12-0 at half time.

The Canowindra Tigresses also travelled to Trundle on Saturday to take on the Trundle Sunflowers. The players did not disappoint in this round, playing an outstanding game of league tag and coming home with a 32-0 win.

Ashley McLean scored 2 tries with more points scored by Krystal Coker, Tanika Wensley and Jennifer Holmes.

RUGBY UNION

The Pythons bared Orange’s cold temperature to take on the Aggies in one of their worst games for the season, but with some coordination from team captain Sean Wyburn, they were able to come away with a win.

They didn’t start off on a good foot as Kenny Turnball was hospitalised for a hamstring injury in the warmup.

With Dean Schaefer strong in attack, bouldering over defence, Ronald Lawrence soon made it over the line and Ed Price converted.

The Aggies came back with a penalty kick bringing the score to 10-7.

The Pythons were on a roll when Daniel Williams scored next to the post and Ed Price converted the goal stretching their score 2110.

In the second half the Aggies gained possession of the ball and scored. With tempers rising and only 4 points separating them the Pythons were left battling after a few yellow cards. The Pythons pushed a scrum over the line for Adam Nash to score and win 26-17.

The first round of Consistency matches were played on Tuesday 28 July. Libby Balcomb defeated Diane Slattery with a score of 152108.

Marion Wilson defeated Betty Hodge with a score of 145-15. Betty conceded the match to Marion.

Colleen Crump defeated Sheryn O’Malveney with a score of 150-115 and Jill Messenger defeated Daph Bryant with a score of 153147.

One game of social triples was played with Ellen Petty, Bobbie Turner and Gwen Haydon defeating Moyna Rue, Linda Miller and Heather Hoad with a score of 21-1.
