Black leather at the height of summer would normally not be recommended, except when it is January and you are in Parkes for the 2018 Elvis Festival!

Celebrating 50 years since the ’68 Comeback Special, the Parkes Elvis Festival promises to be even bigger and better with black leather, white suits and lots of pomade set to take centre stage from 10th to 14th January.

To add more glamour to the festival that has put Parkes on the international map, will be Australian rock legends Phil and Tommy Emmanuel, who went to school in Parkes. “We still have wonderful friends here, Parkes is a very important part of our lives,” said Tommy at the launch of the festival at Hotel Gracelands on Monday.

The two brothers, who have more than 50

albums to their name and plenty of other accolades, will be inducted to the Wall of Fame on 10th January – a very fitting honour as Tommy said he believed Elvis’ Jailhouse Rock was one of the greatest recordings ever.

The 2018 festival promises to be a fitting 50th celebration according to Festival Director Cathy Treasure with lots of new and exciting additions to the five-day program including a midnight show, dancing in the Coles car park, performances in the Little Theatre and more 5pm shows. A second train, the Blue Suede Express will arrive shortly after the Elvis Express, while a special Priscilla Plane will also be in operation for the first time.

Marriage Equality: The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has started the delivery of Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey materials to more than 16 million eligible Australians to collect their views on whether the law should be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry. Detailed information about the survey is available from www.marriagesurvey.abs.gov.au or by calling the Information Line on 1800 572 113 from 8am to 8pm (AEST), seven days a week. All eligible Australians are encouraged to return their forms. Results will be published on the ABS website on 15th November.

Happy Birthday Parkes Day VIEW Club: About 50 members and guests celebrated the club’s 48th anniversary last week, as well as thanking Krys Szabo for her membership of 20 years. Member Adrienne Bradley’s beautifully decorated cake was outstanding and very popular. The theme was Buttons and Bows with three ladies winning prizes for their brilliant outfits. Congratulations to Rhonda Redenbach (1st), Krys Szabo (2nd) and Sister Flo (3rd).

Payslips

Is your employer complying with the Fair Work Act and its regulations in providing payslips with the correct information.

Payslips are required to disclose: • the employer’s name and ABN; • the employee’s name; • the date of payment and pay period; • the gross and net amount of payment; • any loadings, monetary allowances, bonuses, incentive based payments, penalty rates, or other separately identifiable entitlement paid; • If the employee is paid an hourly pay rate, the ordinary hourly pay rate and the number of hours worked at that rate and the amount of payment made at that rate; • If the employee is paid an annual rate of pay (salary), the rate as at the last day in the pay period; • Any deductions made, including the name, or the name and number, of the fund or the account of each deduction including superannuation contributions for the benefit of the employee and the name and number of the fund.

Payslips maybe sent electronically to the employee provided it complies with the above and the employee agrees to such electronic posting.

Employers are also required to keep records of this information for at least seven years and a Fair Work Inspector has the right to inspect such records without any search warrant.

It is an offence not to comply with these requirements and an employee may be able to recover not only any back pay but may with the court’s approval recover the fine from the employer in some circumstances.

Spring Colours Parkes

Spring is a vibrant time and the Parkes Shire Council is celebrating the new season with the launch of its Colour Parkes campaign.

The aim is to encourage visitors to explore the region at a time when the bright yellow canola crops, the lush green fields of wheat and expansive blue skies make it an enjoyable experience.

The campaign was launched last Friday and will be promoted via television, billboards, social media and digital advertising until the end of October, and will be directed at visitors within a five-hour driving radius, specifically the Canberra region.

Council’s Brand & Marketing Manager, Katrina Dwyer said visitors could access special offers at local attractions, shopping outlets, accommodation and cafes, by downloading a Colour Pass from www.visitparkes.com.au “The pass features 10 colour deals supplied by local tourism partners to entice visitors to extend their stay and spend longer in the Parkes region.”

Visitors can also win a return visit to Parkes for an exclusive tour inside The Dish by sharing photos of their visit on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Use the hashtag #ColourParkes and tag @VisitParkesRegion to stand a chance to win the prize, including one night’s accommodation and meals for up to four people.

Encourage visiting friends, relatives or customers to join the social campaign. Images will be chosen based on the best representation of spring colour fun in the Parkes Region. The winner will be notified by 1st December.

Peak Hill Tourist Site A ‘Gold Mine’ The Peak Hill Gold Mine has an extra sparkle with the official opening this week of new work and additions.

NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall was in Peak Hill on Monday to open the works including the new gold mining themed entry shelter and associated revitalisation works that was supported by the NSW Government.

“The Peak Hill Gold Mine is a key driver of the Peak Hill visitor economy and we’re proud to be supporting Parkes Shire Council’s efforts in revitalising the visitor experience at the mine through our Regional Visitor Economy Fund,” said the Minister.

Parkes Shire Council’s Destination Development Manager Kelly Hendry said the mine was “popular among travellers, particularly caravaners, wanderers and family groups”.

“These improvements are designed to encourage visitors to stay and explore longer, which is anticipated to have flow-on benefits to Peak Hill businesses”.

Major works undertaken include: design and construction of a bespoke Peak Hill Gold Mine entry shelter that looks like an old mining relic (poppet head); development of interpretive sculptures and soundpost to tell the mining story; revamped walking trails/ track works, seating, signage and bollards; and a drinking water refill station.

A majority of the works have been carried out by local suppliers such as local Peak Hill fabrication company Zaidan Pty. Ltd. The Peak Hill Gold Mine lies on a current mining lease, and is one of only a handful of sites to have been granted a tourist mine permit. Tourist mines are workplaces previously used for mining operations that are now used only for tourism purposes.

Visitors can take self-guided tours of the site from 9am-4pm daily.

Parkes Open Has Strongest Field Ever

The Parkes Open Golf Tournament will see the strongest field in its 43-year history competing on Sunday.

The SCT Logistics 27-hole event has attracted 144 players with 44 of them off handicaps of 8 or less. According to Parkes Golf Club’s Tournament Director Paul Thomas this has forced officials to change the A grade field from its normal 10 handicap to the lower limit of 8.

The field also includes eight golfers off handicaps of square or better, while over half are off handicaps of 4 and below.

The Harvey Norman B grade field will be for players on handicaps of 9 to 15, and the Video Brokers C grade field will be for players on handicaps of 16 to 27.

Three former winners will be playing with titleholder Steve Betland of Forbes, his brother John who plays Pennants out of the strong Moore Park Club in Sydney despite still residing in Forbes, and DuntryLeagues’ multiple winner Robert Payne.

Mudgee golfer Mark Hale will start as favourite slightly ahead of Robert Payne, and the Australian’s James Brownlow with the Betland brothers certain to be in the mix.

Two Major Hockey Events Next Year

Hockey supporters will see some of the State’s best junior and senior hockey players next year when Parkes will host two of the 2018 Field State Championship tournaments at McGlynn Sporting Complex.

The Over 50s Men’s Masters and the Under 15s Boys Championships will be held in May and June respectively to make Parkes the only regional town to host two Field State Championship tournaments next year.

Chair of the Sporting Facilities Development Committee, Cr Louise O’Leary said: “We are delighted to have secured two hockey tournaments for 2018, having recently made a significant investment in upgrading the hockey complex to enable Parkes to accommodate larger sporting events.”

The construction of a second hockey turf in 2016 has already delivered many positive benefits to the region by attracting major hockey tournaments and events to Parkes.
