Hundreds of people flocked to the 2017 Parkes Show this week to continue making it a true community event for the 137th year!

For Maisie Morrow, 2017 The Land NSW Showgirl and judge in the Showgirl competition, “shows let communities shine, and Parkes is a wonderful example”. She was very impressed and delighted by the encouragement young people received to be part of the show.

Show President Gary O’Brien attributed the show’s continued success to its “passionate committee and volunteers who work together to ensure all the elements come together seamlessly”.

MAYORAL NOTES Congratulations to the District Show Societies for another successful show circuit.

Residents of Tullamore, Trundle, Peak Hill, Parkes and surrounds took advantage of the public holiday to support the shows.

Council’s impressive CAT500B Road Reclaimer at the Parkes Show proved to be a big drawcard for residents wanting to know more about our roads program. The show circuit was capped off with an impressive fireworks display seen all across town.

To date, local procurement on the Advanced Water Recycling Facility is at 94%, with Council partnering with local suppliers and operators to deliver this project for our community. Combined with the new Water and Sewage Treatment Plants, local content equates to 36% of the total work complete across the project sites.

QUESTION of the week Parkes Business Shines: Local beauty and skin clinic La Bella Medispa was named finalists in two categories at the Australian Beauty Industry Awards on Sunday night.

Salon owners Rebecca Miller and Jess Galvin travelled to Sydney for the announcement of the 2017 winners. Rebecca said: “This is the first year we have entered. With over 250 entries in the awards, we were thrilled to be finalists in two categories, Business Director/Owner of the Year and Customer Care.”

The Australian Beauty Industry Awards (ABIA) is the only national business awards in the beauty industry and seen as the true benchmark of excellence.

Over 50s: The Central West is one of five trial sites for a new employment program aimed at helping prepare mature aged Australians for new jobs. The Career Transition Assistance Program trial include West Wyalong, Forbes and Parkes areas, including Ungarie, Condobolin and Trundle to create more opportunities for over 50s to re-skill and re-enter the workforce.

According to Member for Riverina and Small Business Minister, Michael McCormack 24.1% of those looking for work in the Central West were aged at least 50 and in NSW there were 37,100 mature aged workers in NSW looking for a job.

What Makes Your Dad Happy?

The Staff and Students of the Parkes Christian school would like to wish all the Fathers, Step Fathers, Guardians and role models who help our students grow a blessed Father’s Day.

If you want to make Father’s Day on Sunday a special day, take a bit of time to think about what you can do that would make your dad happy.

It will largely come down to knowing what your dad likes. That can mean planning a grand adventure, or simply taking care of all the chores around the house so dad can relax.

Plan at least one activity to do with your dad that he will enjoy. Maybe he likes fishing or playing catch, or board games with the whole family. Choose something you know he’ll love.

Think about a time when your dad did something for you, and see how you can pay him back. It could be as simple as mowing the lawn.

Get others invovled. If you have siblings, plan something nice together for your dad, or ask your mom or grandparents to help.

For example, you could get together and write a song you can sing to your dad, or you can make a card together.

One sibling can make him his favorite breakfast, one can set up the TV with his favourite sport and snacks, and another sibling could give him a foot rub.

More Ideas For Dad If your dad enjoys nothing more than spending time with the family, plan an activity where your dad gets to do something he loves.

If he loves grilling, get all the things needed for a barbecue and invite his friends over to hang out. Or if your dad is a foodie, take him and the family out for breakfast or lunch.

Be sure to run the idea by your dad before you make any big plans though! You don’t want to plan a whole party only to find out he doesn’t want it.

Otherwise let him sleep in if he enjoys that, but normally doesn’t get to because of work and kids. Let him sleep as long as he wants, and start the celebration whenever he’s ready.

If you’re planning to bring him breakfast in bed, you can still let him sleep in.

Spend quality time together and talk to your dad. Ask your dad how he is doing, or ask him to tell you about his life growing up.

A Hockey Field Called Mariah Sports Grants For Six Clubs Not many 23-year-olds have a facility named after them, but last

CMOC-Northparkes Mine and the Parkes Sports Council have announced the successful applicants from the last round of the current Sports Grants Funding Program.

A total of $15,000 were granted to the following successful applicants: Parkes Gun Club $3,050; Parkes Railway Bowling Club $3,110; Parkes Rugby Union Club $1,500; Parkes Australian Rules Football Club $437.60; Parkes Hockey Inc. $2,049; Parkes PCYC $2,853.40.

This was the last round under the current funding agreement which has distributed $150,000 over the past five years. A new agreement is currently under negotiation and an announcement will be made soon.

Saturday the privilege befell Parkes’ international hockey star Mariah Williams when the second synthetic hockey turf was named in her honour. “I could not think of anyone more worthy,” said Parkes Hockey Inc Executive Director, Aaron Huppatz.

NSW Minister for Racing Paul Toole congratulated the club and Parkes Shire Council on the fantastic facility and the number of tournaments it had already attracted that support the local economy.

“Mariah is an incredibly talented young woman. She is a product of this region and every time she plays Parkes and the whole Central West follow her.”

For the Parkes Mayor the naming of the field signified a great day for the community and for hockey. “We are standing on the shoulders of giants here today with many life members also in attendance. Mariah is an inspiration to all junior players who might be dreaming of being an Olympian one day too.”

Mariah responded to all the accolades saying she was very honoured. “There is a lot of history here as I grew up only 100m away from the fields and spent so much time here.” She said although she had lived in many different places, she would always call Parkes home.

The synthetic turf was jointly funded by the NSW Government’s ClubGrants Program, Parkes Shire Council and Parkes Hockey Inc totalling over $1.5M. The international standard surfaces available in Parkes had attracted three major hockey tournaments so far this year, with another three big events booked for next year.

AgriFutures Australia Has New Purpose AgriFutures Australia is the new trading name for Rural Industries Research & Development Corporation (RIRDC).

Building on the strong foundation set by RIRDC, AgriFutures Australia is forging a bold new path for Australia’s rural industries.

RIRDC has made an important contribution to Australian agriculture over the past 25 years. The new identity is a culmination of hard work from past directors, employees, farmers and partners.

With new headquarters in regional NSW, the AgriFutures Australia team has come up with a ‘clear and unyielding mandate’ to grow the long-term prosperity of Australian rural industries through research and innovation.

According to AgriFutures Australia Chair, Kay Hull AM, it is more than just a name change, it represents the organisation’s renewed purpose and direction.

“Our new name signals a distinct path for our organisation. We have upended our thinking to be proactive in the face of a rapidly changing environment, and to harness the many opportunities this presents our organisation and the sector,” said Kay. AgriFutures Australia invests in research, leadership, innovation and learning to enhance the long-term prosperity of rural industries and communities across Australia.

Lambing Data Needed The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) are collecting data as part of a national lambing density project funded by AWI and MLA. The DPI are asking producers, who pregnancy scan their ewes for multiples, for their data on their farm related to lamb survival within individual mobs.

The data will help the DPI to understand the impact of lambing density on lamb survival across a range of management and environmental conditions.

Suicide Rate Higher In Rural Areas Australia’s recorded suicide rate is the highest it has been for 10 years.

The rate of suicide is about 50% higher in rural areas than in major cities. In NSW, more than 74% of the population live in major cities, and has increased by 1.6% year on year from 2014 to 2015, while the population of remote and very remote NSW areas has decreased, at -0.7% and -1.1% respectively.

The most populous states of NSW, Victoria and Queensland collectively accounted for 73.2% of Australian suicides in 2015. It is the 13th leading cause of death in Australia.

Sheer Splendour In A Shed Art requires creativity, so why not be as imaginative when planning an art exhibition?

The Parkes Action Club is bringing a unique event to the community by holding an art exhibition called Ducks on the Pond in the 137-year-old St Elmo Shearing Shed on Saturday, 16th September at 6pm.

The exhibition will showcase eight local and regional artists featuring works of Eryn Mullins (Condobolin), Jocelyn Moles (Parkes), lighting and installation artist Jamie Coffill (Condobolin), Ralph Tikerpae (West Wyalong), Martin Lane (West Wyalong), Elsie Mahon (Parkes), Pol Cruz (Bogan Gate) and Lucy Buttenshaw (West Wyalong).

According to Parkes Action Club chairman and art enthusiast Gary Somers it is probably the first time an art exhibition will be held in a shearing shed in Parkes.

Limited tickets are available at $25 prepaid or $30 on the night and includes food

Weekly Market Update Last week saw an unusual selling pattern, with sales held on Tuesday and Wednesday to accommodate for Wool Week activities on Thursday.

From the opening hammer prices were quickly and heavily discounted, with most merino types trading at levels 3050 cents below the previous sale. The lesser style & strength lots were the hardest hit, leaving the NRI 24 cents cheaper.

Wednesday saw further losses, with the medium to broader MPG’s 5-10 cents cheaper while the finer indicators bucked the trend and gained some ground, leaving the NRI to close the day 5 cents cheaper at 1650 (a 29 cent correction for the week). The skirting market closely mirrored the fleece, with most types and descriptions generally easing by 20-40 cents. The crossbred sector also recorded losses with all microns easing 10-30 cents for the week.

This weeks sales will be held in all three centres with 44,750 bales currently rostered for sale.

A record dry July has put pressure on struggling winter crops and the prospects for summer crops in some areas across the state. NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Seasonal Conditions Coordinator Ian McGowen said July was another recordbreaking month with some areas of eastern and central NSW experiencing the driest July for 20 years, or the driest on record.

“Rainfall was below average across 71% of the state,” Ian said.

“Pasture growth remained limited across much of inland NSW due to the lack of topsoil moisture, heavy frosts and grazing pressure. During July, topsoil moisture declined across much of NSW, particularly across the northern tablelands, western, north western and central NSW.”

BOOK Worms

Everything I Never Told You is a 2014 debut novel by Celeste Ng. It topped Amazon’s Best Books of the Year list for 2014. The novel is about a mixed-race ChineseAmerican family whose middle daughter Lydia is found drowned in a lake. The author spent six years writing the novel, going through four different full drafts.

The Book Club meets at the Parkes Library on the last Wednesday and Thursday of every month. The meetings this month are on Wednesday, 20th September at 3:30pm, and Thursday, 21st September at 6pm.

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like about living here? I’ve lived in Parkes (on and off) since 1968. I kept returning because many of my family are here; it’s such a great community; and it will always be the place I love to call ‘home’.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I have just opened ‘Top Tutors Parkes’ with my husband, Bill. I love how our students come in with a happy greeting and a smile on their face. We know they feel a sense of pride in what we help them achieve.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? My passion is dragon boating. It’s a fabulous sport for fun, fitness and friendship. And there’s not much that beats paddling across the calm waters of Lake Forbes on a Sunday morning, with the drum beating like the dragon’s heartbeat as we watch the pelicans glide across the water. I also like to read, write, garden, ride my motorbike and play bridge.

What are you really good at? I guess I must be good at dragon boat paddling as I represented at national level last April. And I must also be good at writing because Pegasus Publishers accepted my historical fiction novel ‘Remember Oradour’ and it is selling well in England, France and Australia.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would love to fly! I often fly in my dreams and it’s the most amazing and liberating experience. Sheer joy!

What is your pet hate? I detest that people drop their rubbish or throw it out of their cars and litter this beautiful land of ours.

There’s no need for such slovenly and disgusting behaviour when bins are so easily accessible.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. We are just back from three months in The Kimberley. Although I’ve loved and raved about many overseas destinations there is nowhere comparable to the unspoiled beauty of this last frontier of Australia with its ancient spirituality. I may even have found inspiration there for my second novel….

Hard Hitting Mock Crash Paints Stark Picture

More than 500 high school students were emotionally challenged with the realities of what happens in a serious car crash during the staging of a mock crash at the PCYC Parkes last week.

“I am still shaken by it,” said Kian Schembri, a Year 10 student from Parkes Christian School of the annual event staged for the ninth time this year.

The aim of the confronting mock crash is to bring home the message of drinking and driving. The demonstration by the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils is the corner stone of the NOT A STATISTIC! Youth Driver Education Program.

Four youth actors, Krystle-Lee McMurray and Maddison Collits from Forbes and Jack McGrath and Faith Hanstock from Parkes, took the audience on a moving, tragic and at times upsetting ride from a care free birthday party to the horrors of a car crash and its long-term after effects.

“It is a really good way to teach us a les-

son,” said Wally Campbell from Forbes High School, one of seven high schools attending. “It will remain with me as a reminder not to drink and drive, and to think before getting into a car with someone who’s been drinking.”

For Ella Richards from Parkes Christian School it was “really good and very confronting” as she has friends who had been in a crash. “I will definitely not drink and drive.”

Melanie Suitor, Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, said it was hard to gage the effect of the annual event, but in the Central West 25% of accidents involved young people, while the state average was 32%.

Local young drivers were involved in 207 crashes across the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Council areas over four years from 2011, resulting in three fatalities and 228 injuries.

Fun With Lego

A Fun Season Ahead For Lachlan Dragons Now is the best time to come and try paddling with the Lachlan Dragons on Lake Forbes. It’s the start of the season so you can begin training before regatta season kicks in. If you love it you can compete, you can become involved with us in the upcoming River Arts Festival, or you can just remain a social paddler. It is also the time of season when there are a few other newbies about, so you certainly won’t feel the odd one out.

Last weekend the club’s coaching duo, Carmen Stephens and Warren Edwards, headed off to Chifley Dam Bathurst for a two-day course run by state coach, Deb Clarke.

“The course made me feel confident that our club is on the right track in terms of season goals and fulfilling the needs of both social and more competitive paddlers,” said Carmen, “also informed me of

so many extra tips and strategies that will help us continue in the best direction for our club.”

The Club is fortunate to have Carmen as head coach and Warren as assistant coach. “There was a great deal to absorb and remember”, said Warren, “Deb made us feel comfortable and confident in the techniques shown.”

Carmen and Warren must still complete further practical experiences and evaluations over the next few months.

“It was great to share the weekend with Warren, because we now feel well prepared and informed to make plans for a fun and successful season for the Forbes Dragon Boat Club,” said Carmen.

Ability Links NSW and community groups have joined together to form the Parkes Lego Club for children aged 5-8 years, inclusive of all abilities.

A Lego club can help children to improve their verbal and non-verbal communication, sharing and turn-taking, as well as their collaborative problem-solving skills.

In addition practitioners and parents have discovered that the use of LEGO during play groups for children with autism leads to improved social skills and play skills. Research have confirmed that this is the case.

LEGO building blocks offer a highly routine, repetitive, structured form of play that many children with autism find appealing.

Activities using LEGO can be graded from simple step by step instructions to free building that allows for creativity.

Research on LEGO play therapy was recently conducted at the University of Cambridge. The study focused on children with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, and found that children who participated in LEGO therapy showed improvement in social skills.

The Parkes Lego Club meets every Monday from 4 to 5pm at the Parkes PCYC, 36/38 Pearce Street. Lego is provided and the club is for free and open to all children.

Golf Open Entries Close Today Entries for this this year’s SCT Logistics Parkes Open Golf Tournament on 16th and 17th September close today.

Although entries have not been as forthcoming as in previous years, Tournament Director Paul Thomas is happy with the standard of players who will be contesting the 27-hole championship event on Sunday, 17th September.

Paul believes Mudgee’s Mark Hale will start as the favourite ahead of the Australians James Brownlow, while defending titleholder Steve Betland of Forbes will have his followers, as will his brother John.

There is also DuntryLeagues’ Robert Payne who will test the mettle of the top hopes as will the local hopes in club cham-

pion, Mitch McGlashan, and Justin Sutton.

The Harvey Norman B Grade title should be a tight affair with players off handicaps of 10 to 16 will contest this division, and the Network Video C Grade will cater for players on handicaps in excess of 17.

The veteran golfer brigade will battle the Keith Clarke Scratch Division for a trophy donated by the Asquith Golf Club, while Mayor Ken Keith will sponsor the handicap section. The John Leister Memorial trophy is for the player who returns the best 18 hole handicap score across all grades, and D’Aquinos will sponsor the first hole in one and the nearest the pin awards.
