Trundle locals have 500,000 reasons to smile! Deputy Mayor Barabra Newton, MLC Rick Colless, Minister for Racing Paul Toole and Mayor Ken Keith joined the dedicated Trundle locals to celebrate Tuesday’s funding announcement.

Trundle Kicks $500,000 Goal

Trundle’s Berryman Park is about to get a $500,000 make-over thanks to a NSW clubGRANT funding decision that was announced this week.

The upgrade will include new seating and lighting, expanded grandstands, and the construction of an amenities block. The grant is a significant victory, allowing the improvements to be undertaken in one stage, rather than tackling the improvements on a piecemeal basis – a process that could have dragged on for years.

The Minister for Racing Paul Toole joined MLC Rick Colless in making a special visit to the shire for Tuesday’s funding announcement. Berryman Park is one of only 11 projects that were funded from this round. With more than 400 applicants, it was a very tough playing field. Paul Toole said the funding will change the way the park is used and

showcase what Trundle has to offer.

Understandably, the locals were thrilled with the windfall. Andrew Rawsthorne, Trundle Progress Association grants officer, said that this project will have a significant long-term benefit for the town.

Geoff Jones, Trundle Sports Council President, agreed. “Lots of things happen here, not just rugby,” he said. “We have the Abba Festival and cricket as well.”

Mayor Ken Keith said that while all the towns in the shire are wonderful, he conceded there is something special about Trundle. He extended council’s gratitude for the funding decision.

“Parkes Shire Council has a philosophy that we should spend other people’s money rather than our own if we can,” he joked.

Police Minister, Troy Grant MP announced more than $150,000 in funding for Parkes High School’s Re-connect program which aims to keep students focused on their schooling and divert them from anti-social behaviour.

Parkes Shire Council grants officers Ellie O’Donoghue and Sally Chapman enjoyed a sausage sizzle after the funding announcement at Trundle on Wednesday. Ellie said its a wonderful result for such a passionate, dedicated and proactive community. Sally said it will make a huge difference to be able to deliver the project in one stage.

Westpac boosts local groups: One lucky community group could be the recipient of $500 thanks to Westpac’s Local Boost program. Westpac celebrated 200 years at the beginning of April and as part of their celebrations want to give back to the communities that support them. Local charities and non-profit groups are invited to nominate themselves for the prize by writing a short entry describing the group and what they plan to do with the money. Charities and groups don’t need to be Westpac customers to enter. The winner will be announced on the 28th July.

Country Arts Support Program: Artists and organisations are invited to apply for the Country Arts Support Program (CASP).

Small grants are available for short term, locally initiated projects that support one or more of the following groups; Aboriginal people, youth, people with disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and residents of regional New South Wales.

Funding applications open for Veterans’ Health Week: Community groups and exservice organisations could apply for funding to support local events organised for Veterans’ Health Week 2017. The theme for this year is ‘physical activity’. Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said “Veterans’ Health Week events will help connect veterans with their local communities and should be a lot of fun for everyone.”

Parkes Is Dedicated To Peace The Rotary Peace Precinct stood almost abandoned as it was dusted by light rain on Wednesday, while across town the official dedication ceremony was conducted indoors. The standing-room-only event was moved to the Little Theatre, but even though attendees were unable to walk amongst the peace pillars at the base of Memorial Hill it was none-the-less an appropriate location.

Theatres are magical places that can transport an audience across time and place, and Wednesday’s ceremony was no exception. The audience was invited to visualise the Peace Precinct, to consider the symbolic imagery in the totem sculptures and dry creek bed, and to imagine how the installations interact with the land.

The audience was also transported further afield, as each of the official speakers reflected on the nature of peace, sharing their personal connections to various countries and conflicts, not just across the world, but also across history.

Even though the dedication was not held within the precinct, it was a deeply moving ceremony that evoked the passion and energy of the many talented and dedicated people who worked to bring the project together.

The Peace Precinct represents the values expressed in the Rotary Peace Communities credo, with a particular emphasis

on reconciliation. The five timber sculptures are carved with Wiradjuri iconography, each reflecting the tenets of the credo; Respect, Reconciliation, Families, Newcomers and History. Four of the pillars are positioned to represent music notes, which together create harmony.

Harmony was the enduring theme throughout the ceremony. Students from Holy Family School and Parkes East Public School formed a joint school choir to perform Kookaburra in both English and Wiradjuri. This was later followed by an emotive flash-mob performance of I Am Australian.

The Peace Precinct is yet another of Parkes’ treasures. When you visit be sure to take time to engage with its poignant symbolism.

Free Child Restraint Checks

Parkes Shire Council are ensuring that children are safe and secure when travelling in vehicles with free child restraint checks at local Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Stations Thursday 6 July.

Parkes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, says that the free child restraint checking day is held every year and is important in ensuring the safe travel of young children.

“The correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints is vital. Research shows that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this puts children at risk in the event of a crash.

“Last year 80% of the child restraints inspected were found to be installed incorrectly. Most had minor problems that needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child, such as tightening straps, checking clips and replacing loose bolts.

“It is important to have your child restraint checked regularly after prolonged use and installed correctly before use to ensure that your precious cargo is safe,” Ms Suitor said.

Free child restraint inspections will be provided by RMS Authorised Child Restraint Fitters in Parkes on Thursday 6 July at two different locations. Inspections will be held from 11am - 1pm at Col Fletcher Ford and Kia, and from 2pm – 4pm at Parkes Tyrepower.

Information about the national child restraint laws, the types of restraints and advice on moving children from one restraint type to the next will be available. There will also be a free BBQ and a colouring-in competition for the kids with a prize worth $50.

Whilst this free child restraint checking day is a one-off event, Col Fletcher Ford and Kia as well as Parkes Tyrepower install and check child restraints every day for a small fee.

Ugandan Children’s Choir Set To Wow Parkes

Middleton Public students embraced a Life Education fund raiser recently by creating fruit and vegetable sculptures. Over 80 entries were received which were displayed in the school hall. Staff also entered the competition. Students paid a gold coin donation to view the amazing display. Healthy Harold and Life Ed Educator Rai Mitchell made an appearance at the weekly Assembly to give out the prizes. Thank you to the students and parents for supporting this fun event.

Parkes residents will experience the energy and joy of African culture, as well as an insight into their hardships, when the 100% hOPE Choir and dance troupe visits from Uganda on 14th July.

The choir from the 100% hOPE school in Uganda will be accompanied by their ‘mum’, Aussie school teacher and former world championship dragon boat racer Trishelle Sayuuni. She founded the charity which is working to give over 115 orphaned and vulnerable Ugandan children a home, school, and vocational education.

The 100% hOPE Children’s Choir performances range from traditional African music and acapella singing to head spinning break-dancing.

“There’s so much joy in Uganda, even amongst the poverty, and we want to share that and inspire Australians,” Trishelle said.

“This is an incredible adventure for the choir, but they’re working so hard, because they know this is their chance to use their talents to help their 100% hOPE brothers and sisters, now and into the future.”

The Choir’s first tour to Australia last year raised funds for five additional classrooms.

This year they are aiming to raise enough for four fully-equipped girls’ homes, starting with homes for the 42 girls currently living in their classrooms.

The public are invited to come and see the Choir perform at the Parkes Christian School Hall on Friday 14th July at 6:00pm.

The children's choir will provide vibrant and culturally rich entertainment and is not to be missed.

How long have you lived in Parkes for and what do you like about living here?

I have lived in Parkes my whole life, for 22 years to be exact. I love the community spirit and local attractions. Wherever I go, I am proud to talk up Parkes as the Elvis Capital of Australia, and the home of ‘The Dish’. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I am a part of the great team at Ron Dunford Chemist. I enjoy working alongside some of the greatest people that I have ever met, and the customers that you get to know quite well.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I don’t get much time to unwind or relax, as there’s always something going on. I’m at university in Wagga Wagga studying a Bachelor of Education trying to keep up with assignments. And when I am home, you often see me working. Boring, I know!!

What are you really good at? Setting goals and working towards achieving them. I am a person who does what they say they are going to do. Last month, my goal of representing NSW in the National Indigenous Youth Parliament came true, a goal that was six years in the making.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? The ability to control time.

Time is such a precious resource that I never seem to have a lot of. Some days I just wish I could reverse time, freeze time or even fast forward time.

What is your pet hate? Listening to people who sell themselves short, or believe that they are incapable of achieving something. Each individual is unique and more than capable of achieving anything that they set their mind to. If you don’t believe in yourself first, you’ve already lost the race.

Tell us about your best holiday ever.

Any holiday where I can take a break from University and work is a great holiday. I’ve taken quite a few trips to the Central Coast for holidays with both family and friends.

I have plans to travel outside the country when I finish university.

Meniscus Tears Part 1 Within the normal knee joint are two Cshaped discs of cartilage called the medial and lateral menisci. They have a unique wedged kidney shape, and a blood supply only to their outer third which decreases as you age. Almost 70% of each meniscus is made up of water. These unique properties allow the knee to function as well as it does but they are also the reason why meniscus tears are one of the most common knee joint injuries.

The wedge shape of your meniscus assists with the rotational stability that is created by the anterior cruciate ligament especially during pivoting movements. The large water content allows them act like a shock absorber. As you walk, jump or run the knee absorbs large forces with the amount of force increasing exponentially as the speed of movement increases. Your meniscus helps to disperse these compressive forces over the whole knee therefore minimizing the damage to the cartilage that lines the bone surfaces.

Meniscal tears are often classified as either traumatic or degenerative. In the younger population, meniscus tears are usually due to trauma by twisting on a slightly bent knee. The traumatic type of meniscal injuries is most often sports related. Commonly there is pain and a ‘pop’ is heard. The knee joint swells and occasionally the athlete will report a locking or painful clicking sensation. Degenerative tears occur in the older population due to natural age-related degeneration and often the person is unaware of the cause of pain and swelling.

The Legends of Zelda Skyward Sword is a riddle turned into a game. You start off as a normal boy called Link. You live in a world floating above the clouds called Skyloft. You also have a giant bird called a loftling. Your loftling gets trapped in a cave at the bottom of Skyloft. You have to get your loftling back before a race. After you win the race, Zelda is taken away down to the world under the clouds. A weird lady ghost thing comes up at night. You follow her until she leads you to the Goddess statue. That is where you will find your magical sword. You go down looking for Zelda and face many monsters and bosses on the way. At the very end, you save Zelda and become a legend. My favourite part about the legends of Zelda Skyward Sword is the temples. The temples are hard and challenging. They’re sort of like a maze with monsters. The legends of Zelda Skyward Sword is sort of like a riddle so it gets you thinking. So, grab a Wii and get playing.

Roberta Stone and Donna Little celebrate the end of an era

Roberta Retires From A Career Of Caring

If she could, Roberta Stone would work at Currajong Disability Services forever. Helping people comes naturally to her and is a part of her make up. She spent 26 years in child care prior to a decade with CDS. That came to a tearful end on June 15 when she officially retired.

“I will miss it at CDS and cannot thank my colleagues and the board enough,” Roberta said. “I’ll especially miss the clients, their reactions when they achieve their goals,” she said. “We’ve all been through so much together, but now it’s time to travel and catch up with my other family and grandchildren.”

When Roberta first walked through the doors of CDS ten years ago she was seeking a new challenge. The interest in special needs and the disability services industry had always been there but she said it took a long time to take the leap.

“Helping people is who I am and keeping my emotions in check has always been

tough,” she said. “The rewards are there for the right people and they are immeasurable and everlasting.”

With massive positive changes ahead including the roll-out of the NDIS Roberta has no regrets and knows it is the right time.

“Donna Little is great and she is more than capable of taking CDS into the next phase of their development,” she said.

For Donna Little, the new system represents fresh challenges but more importantly new ideas and a chance to build on the good work of those before her like Roberta.

“Roberta has been tremendous and a great source of knowledge and support,” Donna said. “I know I speak for all staff when I wish her all the best.”

Donna Little will take on the role of Residential Team Leader that will incorporate much of Roberta’s old position and some other responsibilities.

On Friday 21st July, Dr Robi Sonderegger will be speaking for a full day conference on Resilience at the Parkes Christian School.

Building resilience in children and teenagers with a Godly perspective is so important in a changing world, dealing with social media, family changes, health, and relationships. One of the key responsibilities of parenting is showing our children and teenagers how to deal with difficult experiences and equipping them for the future.

Dr Robi is a world renowned Christian clinical psychologist, a consultant in trauma associated with war, exploitation and natural disaster as well as being a passionate international speaker. Dr Robi tackles the hard-core issues faced by families using original, educational and highly entertaining methods. Dr Robi is best known for combining the best of science and scripture in his messages that are actively designed to equip and empower participants.

Over the past 15 years Dr Robi has transformed himself from a snowboard instructor to the rich and famous of Europe, to become a humanitarian activist and an expert consultant in trauma associated with war, exploitation, and natural disaster. He has spoken at Hillsong conferences, schools, churches, parenting seminars, Sunday school conferences and now we have him coming to Parkes to speak to teachers, parents and other community members.

The day will consist of three sessions with a question time at the end.

“Drop In And Try” At The Girl Guide Hall

If you have ever wondered what being a Girl Guide is all about, then come along to the Guide Hall in Cecile St on the 15th July between 10am and 2.00pm and we will hopefully provide you with such interesting information that your daughters will want to join us.

Guiding has been a tradition in Parkes for nearly 75 years, and has provided both young girls and women with the skills and knowledge that has seen them achieve success in many fields of their everyday lives, as well as giving life-long friendships filled with fun along the way.

Guiding has moved with the times, and while knot tying and camping skills are still relevant today, there are many new and exciting avenues to explore such as geocaching, abseiling, and canoeing, to name a few. And of course, there are the Jamborees to look forward to, as well as doing community events throughout the town.

The “Drop in and Try” at the hall will have outdoor cooking, craft work, an obstacle course, games and many more things on offer.

Girls between the ages of five and eighteen can be a Girl Guide. Adults aren’t being left out either, as there is always room for leaders and helpers, no matter how much or how little time you can give.

Even if you live in Forbes you are most welcome to join the Parkes girls in their weekly meetings.

Come along, have a peek at what the Guides do, and who knows, maybe you’ll like us enough to join - we hope so!

Parkes Shire Cultural Grant Recipients Announced Four cultural groups from across the Parkes Shire have been successful in their application in the 2017 Parkes Shire Council Cultural Grant Program.

The objectives of the Program are to stimulate community cultural activity, encourage creative and innovative cultural activity, assist in the development of skills and abilities and enhance cultural facilities and community awareness of the importance of culture.

Eight applications to the 2017 program were received reports Shellie Buckle, Manager Cultural, Education & Library Services.

“The Parkes Shire Education, Cultural and Library Services Committee received a variety of applications from across the Shire. The total funding pool for the grants is $9,800. A total of $21,632 was applied for” said Shellie. The Grant Program recipients were announced at the Parkes Shire Council meeting 27 June 2017.

The St Elmo Shearing Shed art exhibition and Being on Higher Ground social history video production at Trundle are exciting new projects for the Shire, while the cake decorating and painting workshops will continue to add to the skills of local artists. Congratulations to the successful applicants” said Deputy Mayor Newton.

Tucker Wins Low Scoring Event On a day where only half a dozen golfers either beat or played to their handicap, Wayne Tucker stood out to claim a one point victory in the Mike Richardson Memorial Shield at Parkes Golf Club last Saturday.

Sponsored by Richardson Dental Surgery, the 18 hole stableford was played on a course that proved too tough for the majority of the 50 starters. Tucker used the early conditions to shoot an excellent 39 points, too good for the rest of the field.

Ball winners went down to those golfers on 33 points. Saturday’s event doubled as

the third round of the Handiskins which sees nominated golfers vying for a spot in the four-person final. The finalists play a skins game with club vouchers up for grabs on every hole, and a chance to compete in the national final in Queensland.

Anthony Riach virtually assured himself of a berth in the local final with his 37 points. Three more qualifying rounds remain as competition heats up.

In ladies golf, Junior Ladies Club Champion Kasey Fay-Rice continued her meteoric rise through the ranks with an impressive one point win in an 18 hole stableford sponsored by Judy McCabe.

Kasey shot a very good 37 points to beat Sue Holman, who finished with 36. Lynne Guise finished third with 34 while Colleen Flynn, Barbara Donnelly and Ann Berkeley all scored 32 points.

Parkes Golf Club men will have their last chance to qualify for this year’s IGA Scratch Shoot-out this Saturday. Played in conjunction with the Telescope Tyres and Batteries Monthly Medal, the sixth and final qualifying round is the last chance to get into the 19 person field.

The shoot-out sees 19 players tee off the first hole and the golfer with the worst score eliminated each hole. Last year’s event, which is a favourite with members, was won by Joe van Opynen who beat Mark Kelly.

While Telescope Tyres and Batteries sponsor the scratch awards this Saturday, Central West Glass are sponsoring the handicap events. The Griffins Leading Edge putting competition will also be held in conjunction.

Eileen Bradley, Merilyn Rodgers, Robyn Morgan defeated Maureen Miller, Flo Riseborough, Audrey Jones/Minnie Riordan.

Lorraine Baker, Rosemary Mitchell, Joan Simpson defeated Di Howell, Valmai Westcott, Liz Byrne.

Jean Kennedy, Cherie Frame, Rhona Went defeated Di Greenhalgh, Frances Charlton, Kim Evans.

Winners for the day were Lorraine, Rosemary and Joan.

In the District Fours played at Cowra, Minnie Riordan, Robyn Morgan, Audrey Jones, Joan Simpson were the Runner ups in a great day of bowls.

Parkes Boars Celebrate 50th Anniversary Get ready for a big weekend of celebrations and football with the Parkes Boars 50th anniversary. The Club reformed in 1967 and has become an important part of the Parkes community. Both the old boys and the new, along with supporters and guests, will come together to reminisce about the good days and memories that were made over the past 50 years in the Club.

There will be a special Gala Dinner at the Parkes Services Club, kicking off at 6.307pm. Tickets are $50 and are available at https://www.parkesboars.com Guest speakers on the night will be current Wallaby’s player Tom Robertson. Tom was born in Wellington and spent his early years playing rugby union in Dubbo. Another guest speaker is ex-Wallaby Jon White.

Jon made 24 test appearances and is regarded as one of Australia’s finest rugby players in the 20th century. He debuted in 1958 against New Zealand and also played a significant role in the rival of Australian Rugby in the 1960’s. In his early days he played rugby in Cumnock and he will certainly give a great insight into the game.

The Gala Dinner is expected to be a great night, so lets raise a glass to 50 years!

Be sure to come along to watch the Boars play this Saturday against the Cowra Eagles at a home game.
