Elvis Festival One Of Top Three Events In Australia

It is official. The Parkes Elvis Festival is one of the best events in Australia taking out a prestigious prize at the tourism industry’s peak awards ceremony!

The 2016 Festival won bronze at the QANTAS Australian Tourism Awards in the Festivals and Events category. More than 800 industry leaders and peers were witness to this great accolade at a gala ceremony in Darwin last Friday.

Mayor Ken Keith said: “This award is the icing on the cake for what has been a remarkable 12 months for the Parkes Elvis Festival.”

“This esteemed award is a reflection of all the hard work, dedication and support that our wonderful community, volunteers and staff contribute each year to make the Festival what it is today.”

The Mayor said the award capped off an exceptional couple of months, having won the Regional and State Tourism Awards late last year, a NSW/ACT Regional Achievement & Community Award in November, and delivering the most successful Parkes Elvis Festival to date in January.

The Elvis Festival was one of eight finalists in the Festivals and Events category, representing NSW against Uluru Camel Cup (NT), Sounds by the River (SA), Queenscliff Music Festival (VIC), Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster (WA), Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo (QLD), The Falls Music & Arts Festival, Marion Bay (TAS) and 2016 National Folk Festival (ACT).

Gold and silver were awarded to the Queensland and ACT events respectively.

Community members are encouraged to gather friends, family and colleagues to join Council staff in helping to clean up, fix up and conserve our local parks, gardens and reserves. Registrations will take place at Lions Park from 8am, where they will be given a clean-up kit and allocated a site. Participants in Peak Hill can register from 7.30am tomorrow and on Sunday at the Commercial Gardens. You’ll be rewarded for all your efforts with a sausage sizzle after the clean-up.

Hurray it’s a week of celebrations: The Parkes Phoenix turns one today! Yes we have done it thanks to the wonderful support of our readers and advertisers. We also celebrate seniors and women this week. See the seniors program on page 11. Apart from International Women’s Day (IWD) on Wednesday, we also celebrate the inspiring founder of the Phoenix Group of Newspapers, Cheryl Newsom, who has decided it was time to hand over the reins. Read her story on page 4, and there is more about an IWD event in Parkes on page 4.

With the cooler weather taking some pressure off us, we can make time this weekend to be thankful for the many blessings we have.

Skywriters: Writers and aspiring writers in the Parkes Shire are invited to join the Big Skies Collaboration Skywriters project to author stories, in any genre, about their own or other people’s relationships with celestial phenomena in our southern sky.

The project is supported by the Regional Arts Fund and hosted by Arts OutWest.

Big Skies Collaborator Dr. Merrill Findlay, is working with local libraries on establishing a constellation of Skywriters’ hubs, where she will offer Skywriters a series of free writing workshops, support from professional editors to author new works to publication quality. Finished works of up to 3,000 words – fiction, nonfiction, prose or poetry – will be published on the Big Skies Collaboration website, and may also be included in a Skywriters’ anthology to be published in 2019, the 50th anniversary of humanity’s first steps on the moon.

The launch of Parkes Skywriters is on Wednesday, 22nd March at 12pm at the library. Join Merrill and the Parkes Library team for lunch and an information session.

Biggest and best in the Central West: Last weekend’s CanAssist Garage Sale transformed the Parkes Showground pavilion into a bustling flea market. With nearly 300 people queuing to get in on Friday afternoon, the volunteer staff joked that it was like a Myer Boxing Day Sale – only all proceeds go towards locals with cancer. If you missed out on bagging a bargain this time, CanAssist will be holding another one on 18th March.

Contact her on 0418 166 580 Colour run: Parkes NF Colour for a Cure is a group of locals organising Parkes’ first family friendly fun run with a splash of colour over 5km to run or walk on 19th March to raise awareness and funds for The Children’s Tumour Foundation. Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a group of three genetic conditions which gives rise to the potential for benign tumours to grow on nerves anywhere in the body. NF1, which affects one in 2,500, is a lifelong condition with a wide range of severity and has no cure. This cause is very close to the Parkes community as it directly affects two locals.

Hamish (13) was diagnosed with NF1 at the age of six months. He has hundreds of benign tumours growing on all his nerve endings throughout his body. He suffers from muscle weakness, learning difficulties and great deal of pain. He has been visiting Westmead Children Hospital every three months since he was five years old.

Emma (28), an Early Childhood Educator, was diagnosed with NF1 at the age of three. NF1 causes benign, often painful masses to grow on her nerves. She is affected by low muscle tone, poor coordination, early developmental delay and some low level learning difficulties. She has a long-term relationship with the Neurogenetics clinic at Westmead since the age of four, where she is part of continuing studies into the long term effects of NF1.

What do you like about The Parkes Phoenix?

Owen Jensen: It’s punchier - being a smaller edition, and it has a good ratio of news stories for each page.

Carol Southwell:It’s informative and free, it’s also very newsworthy. I get it every week.

Anne Norton: It seems like it’s getting bigger every publication. The Phoenix is really getting out and about and publicises what’s going on. It’s good to know what the schools are doing.

James Goonrey: I like it because it focuses on the good things in Parkes. There’s nothing bad, no rubbish, all good local stuff.

Wanted! Women Of All Ages, Shapes, Colours And Sizes

The courageous and committed woman solely responsible for the establishment of four new community newspapers in the Central West, has decided to write the ending to one chapter of her illustrious career.

Cheryl Newsom, Publisher of The Phoenix Group of Newspapers, handed over the reins to her daughter Sarah Maynard this week to retire.

Cheryl marched in where others feared to tread during a time of downsizing in the newspaper industry worldwide, and within three years had four successful newspapers up and running.

She arrived in Canowindra five years ago after a successful media career in the Big Smoke to be closer to her family. She continued with her media consultancy business Inxcess for a few years, and then decided she wanted to do something locally.

When The Canowindra Phoenix came up for sale in 2013 she jumped at the opportunity, and had her very own newspaper for the first time.

The Canowindra Phoenix was transformed from a small four-page paper to a 12-page weekly publication with the motto: Live Local, Love Local, Shop Local.

The Phoenix recipe proved successful and there was no stopping Chez, as she is also known. The Forbes Phoenix was launched on 3rd July 2015, and in March last year two more newspapers saw the light: The Parkes Phoenix and The Hilltops Phoenix.

She was a woman on a mission, and would often say: “Watch out Fairfax we are hot on your tail!”

Chez is a sales guru at heart and selling is her real passion. She was instrumental in launching the Canowindra Tourism Booklet, the Blayney Tourism Booklet, as well as calendar and rainfall charts for all four newspapers.

She already has some new jobs in the pipeline for retirement, but for now The Phoenix team wishes her safe travelling and time to just chill out.

International Women’s Day is next week and Parkes Quota Club is inviting all women to a luncheon to celebrate women’s achievements.

Not only will guests enjoy a delicious chicken and prawn meal, but there will be great entertainment too.

This year we are featuring Women In the Arts. Artists Marilyn Nash, Jo Laurie and Rosalie Burns willl display some of their work and talk to us about it, we will listen to the magnificent voice of Cr Barbara Newton, learn about yoga from Monica Lea and enjoy a mini fashion parade from The Red Chandelier.

Set Sunday, 12th March aside for a wonderful time at the Parkes Services Club starting at 12pm.

Tickets at $30 can be purchased from Absolutely Hair at 207 Clarinda Street until 6th March, unless all sold out beforehand.

Get your friends toghether, and pick up your tickets to avoid disappointment, as we sold out very quickly last year.

The family sold the business on the Sunshine Coast and took a three-month trip to Cape York before relocating to Parkes.

“I grew up in Parkes – my parents are Neil and Janelle Unger – and we wanted to be closer to family and give our three children the opportunity to grow up in a great rural community and enjoy a laid back country lifestyle,” said Michelle.

When Choices was up for sale, it was too good an opportunity to pass up, “as we had been working in a similar business environment”.

According to Michelle they are looking forward to making a great business even better. They are starting by doing a full makeover of the showroom, getting new samples, as well as introducing a mobile showroom to give better service to outlying areas.

A Year Of Writing Positively The Parkes Phoenix has reached its first big milestone celebrating our first anniversary today.

Over the past year we have brought you stories and photos from just about every letter that makes up the alphabet of the Parkes Shire community.

Our very first issue on 4th March 2016 featured Dean Messiter, Manager of Westpac, raising money for Queensland’s worst affected drought areas by setting up a barbeque outside the bank to sell to passersby.

Since then we have covered numerous stories about people exerting themselves to raise money for charities and community groups, we have reported on community events, environmental initiatives, family reunions, special public holidays, festivals, shows, new developments, achievements and many more.

For Editor, Maggi Barnard who joined the paper from the second edition, the highlight has been meeting so many wonderful people in the community who all have amazing stories to tell. “People love it when you are interested in what they do, and we enjoy telling positive stories! It’s a win-win situation for everybody.”

Cheryl Newsom, founder and publisher of the Phoenix Group of Newspapers, said the motivation to start the Parkes Phoenix followed on from the success of the Forbes and Canowindra Phoenix. “As this market did not have a local free newspaper, we be-

lieved the opportunity was there to portray local happenings, local news and feel good stories. “ Cheryl said the support from local businesses, the Parkes Shire Council and the readers had been fantastic. “The comments we receive vindicates the reason why we started this.”

Weekly Market Update This weeks market saw the NRI rise 9 cents to hit a record high of 1530c/kg.

The finer micron groups continued to appreciate at a faster rate than their broader cousins, causing the price differentials between microns to widen further. Quality continued to influence price this week, with the better types attracting strong support and maintaining their large premiums over the lower spec &/or poorly prepared types.

The heat did however dissipate somewhat form the skirting market, leaving this sector generally unchanged, with the exception of some better/finer lots which managed modest rises for the week.

The interest in the crossbred market continued this week with most types and descriptions adding a further 10 to 20 cents to the gains recorded last week.

The oddment market also continued onward and upward with 20 to 30 cent rises recorded for locks and crutchings, while the quickly diminishing offering of washing lambs attracted extremely strong buyer attention.

Next weeks quantities are currently forecast at just over 42,000 bales nationally.

Today is World Wildlife Day. In Forbes we share our environment with 37 different species of native mammals and 260 species of native birds. Here are tips for dealing with injured or orphaned natives.

1. Never approach injured wildlife if your own safety is at risk.

2. DO NOT try to handle snakes, goannas, eagles, falcons, hawks, large kangaroos or wallabies. Call WIRES for assistance. NEVER TOUCH BATS – they can carry Lyssavirus. If you are scratched or bitten by a bat seek medical advice.

3. If you have found a sick, injured or orphaned animal, remove any threat to the animal.

4. If it is safe to do so, contain the animal in a warm, dark, quiet place. You can gently wrap the animal in a towel and place it in a ventilated box with a lid.

5. Do not give the animal any food or water, unless instructed to by a vet or WIRES. 6. Call WIRES on 1300 556 686. Make sure you note the exact location where the animal was found. Many species are highly territorial and must be released at the same location.

The WIRES Wildlife Rescue App is a fast way to get wildlife advice and rescue assistance from WIRES seven days a week.

CAUGHTOut! Ellie is roo-ly special, but as far as she’s concerned she’s just one of the dogs. Ellie was orphaned as a joey and is blind in one eye, but with loving care Ellie bounced back to health.

Now that she’s fully grown and free to roam, she still stays close to her adoptive family, just hanging with the hounds.

Cheryl Newsom How long have you lived in Canowindra and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Canowindra for five years. It is very quiet, although sometimes a little too quiet, but I am close to my two grandchildren. They make my day, every day.

What did you enjoy about your job and what are your plans now that you are stepping down as publisher? I have been the publisher of the Phoenix Group of Newspapers for four years, and have really enjoyed the weekly challenges. I love meeting the business people and learning more about their business. New Paths For Pedestrians And Cyclists Parkes residents will soon have access to a series of new bike paths around town.

Locals are encouraged to take a test ride or walk along the 1.3km of bike pathway from Bushman Street to Webb Street already completed. Construction on the 1.8km section along Renshaw McGirr Way is expected to be complete soon.

The Parkes Phoenix caught up with a resident who was walking on the pathway.

She said it was an excellent idea and that it would make their regular walk more interesting.

The new Water Treatment Plant (WTP) project will not only secure our water supply in years to come, but the installment of new pipelines is also being put to good use to create new pathways. Several sections of raw and treated water pipelines need to be replaced and the disturbed strips of soil are being transformed into bike paths, which will eventually connect to form a cycle network across the town.

Parkes Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure, Andrew Francis said: “The Urban Water Mains Augmentation (UWMA) contractors have done a tremendous job of converting the previously unused pipeline corridor into an asset for the community to use and enjoy.”

“As part of the UWMA project, Leed Engineering and Construction were commissioned to design and construct a bike path to follow the pipeline alignment.

The gravel used to construct the bike paths was procured locally through Westlime, with Council crews were assisting throughout the construction phase.

Construction of the bike paths was done in accordance with the Parkes Pedestrian and Cycling Plan, which aims to improve pedestrian and cycling access throughout town and enhance health and wellbeing opportunities for residents and visitors.

BUSH Telegraph Eugowra CWA Keeps Members Busy The Eugowra CWA branch welcomed several new members at its recent meet and greet event at the home of Yvonne and Colin Smalley. The next meeting will be in the CWA rooms on Friday, 10th March at 11am. Frances Anderson will talk about Nepal after attending a CWA of NSW study weekend in Canberra. Eyewear Specs optometrists are renting the CWA rooms once a fortnight for consultations.

Mixed A Division Grand Final: Parkes Shire Council Mixed narrowly touched victory with a 5 to 4 win against Brisbane Redlands. Michael Murphy from Parkes Shire Mixed scored Player of the Match.

Mixed B Division Grand Final: The Port Stephens Sharks attacked the Storm Troopers (Wagga Wagga City Council) to claim victory with an 8 to 7 win. Darth Vader – AKA Wagga Wagga City Council’s Brett took The Player of the Match.

Men’s A Division Grand Final: Loyalties were torn when two home teams went

head to head. Parkes Shire Council Men’s narrowly beat the Parkes Elvi to the Greenwood Cup, scoring the winning try after a 3-all draw. Jack Elliot from the Parkes Shire Council Men’s team was named the Player of the Match.

Men’s B Division Grand Final: Willoughby City Council put the dogs out, beating the Dubbo Dogz 3 to 2. John Woodward from Willoughby City Council took the Player of the Match honours.

Best Dressed Team: The Wagga Wagga City Council’s Storm Troopers were out gunned by Brisbane-Redlands’s Bavarianinspired outfits, which were accompanied by a novelty costume change.

Wagga Wagga City Council was presented with a Sir Henry Parkes Medallion in recognition of their participation in all 25 National Annual Local Government Touch Football Carnivals.

The formidable Western Region Rogues dragon boat team took to the waters of Penrith International Regatta Centre on Sunday and came home with silver and bronze.

With true determination and grit and paddles thrashing in beautiful synchronisation, the team won silver in the women’s and bronze in the open sections. Both feats are amazing, as only four men were included in the Western side, where other teams had up to twelve men in their sides.

For the paddlers it was as if something magic happened on the water in front of a crowd of thousands, as they raced the 500m course six times. The team had six Lachlan Dragons: Carmen Stephens and Claire Davis of Forbes and Warren Ed-

wards, Helen Rowbotham, Rochelle Smith and Beth Thomas of Parkes.

The team, coached by Deb Clarke of Bathurst, was congratulated many times over on their spirit, enthusiasm and absolute determination.

“I think we are all legends,” said Deb proudly. “We have certainly lifted the profile of Western Region in the state dragonboat community.’

“Our time together stands out for me as one of the most enriching life experiences of friendship, unity and caring,” said Warren Edwards. “We were united, we were a force to be reckoned with and we gave them all something to talk about well past Sunday’s racing.”

Tucker Takes Sportspower Despite a large contingent of members travelling to Sydney to contest the annual Droughtbusters weekend of golf, a good field contested the Sportspower Parkes 18hole Stableford last Saturday.

Renowned local sporting identity Wayne Tucker proved too strong for the field as he returned a solid 39 points to edge out Brent Timmins on a countback. Tucker came home the final 9 holes in a great 3 under par off his 19 handicap to record 21 points, while Timmins was equally impressive with 20 points.

The 2017 ladies golfing season started last Wednesday. Tomorrow the ladies will play an 18-hole Stableford for the Denise Charlton’s trophy.

The club and golf professional Daniel Newton will be conducting coaching classes for ladies and senior men under Golf NSW incentives to encourage more ladies and men to get into golf.

Tomorrow members will contest the Telescope Tyres & Batteries March Monthly Medal in A, B and C grades with local accountancy firm Peter Woods & Associates supplying the trophies in the Handicap Sections. Griffins Leading Edge is sponsoring the putting competition, which will be played in conjunction.
