Orange MP Grants Wishes For Local Community Groups

Philip Donato was the bearer of good news on Tuesday when the MP for Orange visited the Parkes Shire to announce the latest round of Community Building Partnership grants.

A total of $38,925 has been allocated to several local community groups for vital repairs and upgrades. “As Member for Orange, I am proud to announce four Community Building Partnerships grants for groups in Parkes, Trundle and Peak Hill.”

Philip said.

The Parkes PCYC received $20,000 to contribute for the upgrade of amenities.

PCYC Club Manager, Amanda Sutton said around 600 members utilise the PCYC on

a weekly basis, participating in various sports, after-school care, or even traffic offender programs.

“The building is in almost original condition and is in need of a lot of repairs,” she said. “People have a strong connection to the PCYC through the activities, but a lot of people are unhappy with the amenities, so it will be great to be able to start the improvements.” The female toilets and change rooms will be the first to benefit, with a renovation set to provide new tiling, new basins, and an essential repair of the sagged and broken ceiling.

Year of Plastic Bags: Parkes Library is again hosting the Parkes Local Waste to Art exhibition and competition. The community art exhibition and competition showcases imaginative works made from reused and recyclable waste materials. The aim is to challenge peoples’ perceptions about rubbish and to celebrate the reuse and recycling of waste through arts and crafts.

Entry is free and closes on Monday, 10th April at 1pm. The categories are: 2 Dimensional (poster/painting/collage/drawing); 3 Dimensional (sculpture/installation/video/ soundscape) and Functional (furniture, craftworks and wearable items). Within these categories there are sections for primary school, secondary school, community, open (professional artists) and building or element of building/large sculpture. The most inspiring artwork in each section/category will receive a cash prize. An award will also be given to the work that best uses the Annual Waste Theme; Plastic bags and soft plastic packaging. What do you like about the NRL?

Josie Lynch: I like it, because they do tackles, which is a bit like sparring in karate. I enjoy physical fighting with people. I want to start playing. The Panthers are by far the best team – their colour is black and I like black.

Jake Herring: I like NRL because it is a hard and tough sport. I enjoy playing it. My favourite team is the Broncos.

Bailey and Zac Chandler: We like NRL – it is fun to watch. We love the Panthers. It was pretty cool meeting the players.

Health Smart Weight Loss Depends On Your Personality Type When it comes to diets, most Australians tend to over-think, have too high expectations and are anxious about failure – all of which can derail the best intentions.

CSIRO behavioural scientists have recently identified the dominant diet type among Australian adults, revealing why many people find it hard to maintain a healthy diet.

The CSIRO surveyed more than 28,000 Australian adults to identify the personality traits and behavioural patterns in relation to eating and weight loss.

They found there are five behavioural Diet Types with the over-thinking, anxious perfectionist the predominant type.

The Thinker tends to over-analyse every decision, set unrealistic expectations and give themselves little margin for error. This type is more prone to self-doubt, anxiety and stress, which can lead to over-eating and low success.

The research found Australians are motivated to lose weight with nine out of 10 of the surveyed adults attempting to lose weight in their lifetime. About 50 per cent have made more than six attempts while almost 20 per cent has tried more than 25 times.

Even with this strong motivation and persistence to lose weight, obesity rates remain high.

The Diet Types program aims to address this gap by identifying a person’s psychological characteristics which play a key role in improving diet success.

The most and least common of the five main diet personality types across the surveyed population were: • The Thinker 41% - Overthinking and worrying about failure leads to stress which can derail diet progress.

• The Craver 25% - Craves delicious food and finds it hard to stop, leading to overeating in tempting situations.

• The Foodie 15% - Loves making, eating and experiencing food.

• The Socialiser 15% - Flexibility is essential – you won’t let strict food restrictions stifle your social life.

• The Freewheeler 4% - Makes spontaneous and impulsive food choices, finds planning meals hard.

“If you have struggled to maintain your diet after a few weeks, your personal diet type will shed light on what behaviours and habits are creating a barrier for you,” CSIRO Behavioural Scientist Dr Sinead Golley said.

Love is in the air Make Love Count Again We all crave love and companionship in our lives, so why ignore the celebration of love this Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, 14th February.

Think back to the beginning of a relationship where sparks flew, gazes longed and passion was ignited. What happened you must be thinking? Effort is the answer, and too often people slip into what is easy and comfortable. Make the change this Valentine’s Day and bring the romance back into your life.

Romance is the key to keeping that burning passion alive for one another. Whether it be big or small gestures, just make them count.

Be thoughtful in giving and grateful in receiving. Be spontaneous, go on a daring adventure, cook a meal (even if you are a horrible cook), make something special (even if you don’t have a creative bone in you) and most importantly, listen. Listen to not only your loved one’s tedious rants and raves but his or her goals, aspirations, dreams, wants and desires. Get to know one another again, like really get to know each other.

Valentine’s Day is known as the day of roses, chocolates and cards but where did it actually come from and surely there is more to it?

It is believed that Valentine’s Day originated from the ancient Roman fertility festival Lupercalia. During this festival young women would place their names in a large urn, young men then drew a name out and whomever they drew they were now romantically linked to them for the next year.

Another version is that the day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus., and is recognised as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world.

According to Wikipedia, the day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards.

Whatever the origin of Valentine’s Day, why not celebrate what all humans crave in life, being loved. Celebrate it, rejoice in it and enjoy it.

Duncan Clement receives the Parkes Shire Cultural Award – Adult from Susie Elelman, Australia Day Ambassador at the ceremony held at Cooke Park.

Cultural Award Is Music To Duncan’s Ears

Duncan Clement is a man of many talents.

The multi-instrumentalist is very proactive in the local community arts scene, but he’s not one to blow his own trumpet. Which is why it really struck a chord when he was awarded the Parkes Shire Adult Cultural Award in recognition of his contribution to music in the Parkes Shire.

“It was a big surprise, I was not expecting the nomination at all,” he said, “And I really wasn’t expecting to get the award.”

Duncan’s involvement with the Parkes Shire Concert Band goes way back to 1986 when it was called the Parkes Town Band, but life and other duties led him elsewhere.

He has been back for about three years, and for the past two of those he has volunteered as the music director for the Parkes Shire Concert Band, as well as for Lachlan Valley Pipes and Drums. Duncan also runs the Parkes teaching band learners group.

For Duncan music has always played a role in his life. “I had piano lessons when I was five or six years old, and then decided to learn the trumpet when I was at high school. I played music throughout school and for the HSC, and then studied at the Newcastle Conservatorium for one and a half years.”

Duncan said music was reasonably accessible in Parkes, but it often competes with other activities, like sports. “Everyone should give an instrument a go at least once in their life,” he said. “There’s plenty of teachers around town.”

Duncan works as a mechanic by day, but still manages to give so much energy and enthusiasm to local bands because it is something he really enjoys. “If you love something it’s not an effort,” he said.

Looking for something to do on Sunday morning? The Parkes Upmarkets is a good place for a family outing. The markets are held bi-monthly on the second Sunday of the month in Cooke Park from 9am to 1pm.

With almost 30 stalls booked in for Sunday, there will be plenty to look at, taste, drink, admire and buy: jams, fresh fruit, food, drinks, ice cream, coffee, soaps, candles, jewellery, music, sweets, baby items and a jumping castle for the kids! It promises to be a relaxing morning socialising in the park.

Netball is ranked as the leading women’s participation team sport in Australia for 15 to 24-year-olds. It is a great sport to develop health and fitness in a team based environment regardless of the level of competition.

Like any sport there is an inherent risk of injury. National insurance data indicates that as high as 25% of all major injuries are attributed to Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries. Furthermore ACL injury comes at high physical, emotional and financial cost to the athlete.

The ACL is the main stabilising ligament in the knee. Females are four to six times more likely than males to rupture this ligament. There is also further risk associated with athletes participating in sports involving deceleration, pivoting and twisting. This means that netballers have a high risk of injury to the ACL and lower limbs.

Research tells us that 50 to 70% of all ACL injuries can be prevented with neuromuscular training programmes. These types of programmes are basically designed to improve the strength, flexibility, control, balance and co-ordination of the athlete.

Not only can they decrease the incidence of lower limb injuries, they have the added benefit of enhancing performance.

With this in mind Netball Australia, along with the Institute of Sport, has developed the KNEE programme to provide education to coaches, players and parents. The KNEE programme is a netball specific neuromuscular training programme and can be accessed at www.http//knee.netball.com.au.

Big Decisions For Separated Parents The breakdown of a relationship can emotionally be very hard for all parties. This is sometimes made worse by uncertainty over what you should be doing when it comes to making decisions about your children.

There are often big decisions about where the children are going to live and what time the other parent may have with the kids.

Under the Family Law Act it is assumed that parents have equal shared parental responsibility, whether they are the parent who has the children living with them or only spending some weekend time with them. This means both parents have to decide on the major long-term issues. These could include what name a child has, what religion the child practises and major medical issues. Everyday decisions, such as what a child eats, what a child wears are the responsibility of the parent the children are with at the time.

The only time a parent doesn’t have equal shared parental responsibility for the children is when a court order states otherwise.

If a court order states a parent has sole parental responsibility, then they do not have to consult with the other parent on major long term issues.

In a situation where you do not have a court order, the other parent still has equal shared parental responsibility.

It is very important to know where you stand in relation to your obligation to communicate and consult with the other parent regarding important long-term decisions for your children.

Service Manager Gillian Kinsela said their new facilities were fantastic. “It’s bright and airy and spacious. We have a private meeting room, and are looking to make further improvements to help our staff and volunteers work comfortably,” she said.

Their $10,000 grant will go towards new freezers, so they can continue to provide nutritious meals to their clients. The volunteers deliver 300 hot and frozen meals each week in Parkes alone, allowing people to retain their independence for as long as possible. The volunteers also provide social interaction and welfare checks to clients who might otherwise be isolated.

“Meals on Wheels are a vital community service, and one we’re proud to support,” Philip said.

Peak Hill’s historic A.I.F. Memorial School of Arts was the recipient of a $3,000 grant, which will contribute to the costs of repainting the interior of the hall.

A grant of $5,925 will help the Trundle War Memorial Hall upgrade their kitchen.

The four local organisations were amongst 14 community groups across the Orange electorate to receive funding in the latest round of grants.

“Each of these facilities makes a valuable contribution to community life, and these grants will enable them continue to provide their services to the community,” Philip said.

“The $200,000 pool of funding available to the Orange electorate is an excellent resource allowing community groups to reach their goals. I look forward to many more organisations benefiting from this program in the future.”

Dianne Green (right), McGrath Breast Care Nurse, was overwhelmed when she was announced as 2017 Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day celebrations in Parkes recently. She received her award from Susie Elelman, Australia Day Ambassador.

Dianne Green Is Tickled Pink With Her Award

Compassionate and dedicated are two words commonly used to describe McGrath Breast Care Nurse Dianne Green. Her tireless contribution to the community was officially recognised on Australia Day when she was named the 2017 Citizen of the Year.

Dianne offers support to breast cancer patients from the time of diagnosis to beyond recovery, and extends this support to the patient’s family and loved ones as well.

Dianne said the community response to her award made her realise how many people she has supported, and just how far-reaching breast cancer is.

Her proactive approach to her role, such as facilitating support groups, and hosting and catering the yearly field of women morning tea demonstrates her extraordinary commitment and care to her clients.

“It’s a traumatic time in their lives, so I want to make a difference to them, especially being so isolated out here,” she said.

Although nursing is a vocation that runs in the family, Dianne’s role as a breast cancer support specialist grew out of a real need within the community. When she was working as a community nurse, a number of her patients received breast cancer diagnoses, and she found she didn’t have all the answers. Her desire to support her patients spurred her to complete a Grad Cert in 2007. Then, in 2011 the McGrath Foundation funded a breast care nurse for the region, and Dianne was appointed to the role.

She completed a Master’s Degree in 2013.

“When I went for my Masters it was about learning to identify areas of need, it took a lot of family time away, but my family is very supportive of my work, and that makes a huge difference.”

“It’s a huge privilege to be able to give back to the community,” she said. “I really love what I do.”

Water Treatment Plant Achieves Major Milestone Construction on the new Parkes Water Treatment Plant (WTP) has achieved a major project milestone with the help of local materials and suppliers.

The culmination of approximately six months of work by John Holland and specialist reservoir builder, Hornick Construction, saw the final concrete pour completed on the potable water reservoirs. The two 2.7 mega-litre reservoirs have approximately 60 tonne of steel reinforcement, encased in 300 cubic metres of concrete.

Parkes Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure, Andrew Francis said this phase of the project saw locally procured materials and suppliers used.

“The concrete for the structures was supplied by Parkes Ready Mix Concrete, while other regionally-based operators, such as K & H Geotechnical Services, Blayney Cranes as well as concreters and steelfixers from Parkes and Orange, provided their materials and skills to the project,” Andrew said.

According to Andrew, the treated water storage tank was the first of the two reservoirs constructed and is currently having the aluminium roof members installed.

“Once completed, the roofing team will move onto the high level reservoir, with the scheduled date for the completion of both roof installations 21st February.”

The existing WTP has insufficient capacity to meet the projected demand for water of the Parkes and Peak Hill urban areas into the future. The new WTP will provide a safe, secure and reliable water supply for the two towns. This will ensure the towns continue to grow and attract new business and residents. Free Merchandising Workshop In Parkes Back to Business Week this year will bring a series of free merchandising workshops to Parkes at the end of the month. Parkes Shire Council, in association with the Department of Industry, will welcome visual merchandising specialist, Carol Bagaric from AUSVM to host the Retail Revamp program.

Back to Business Week is an initiative that celebrates small to medium businesses and promotes and supports the critical role they play in local communities. Parkes Shire Council’s Economic and Business Development Manager, Anna Wyllie said: “The program would inspire and improve the way you create and deliver professional retail presentations.”

The program starts with an evening workshop on Monday, 27th February, focusing on the theory of visual display followed by a dusk retail tour. The series continues with three separate hands-on workshops on Tuesday, 28th February and Wednesday, 1st March when Carol will visit selected stores to put theory into practice.

Powerplay By Penrith Panthers In Parkes

Parkes was running high on rugby league fever last Thursday when two Penrith Panthers players visited local schools as part of the NRL Community Carnival.

Tony Satini and Lachlan Stein visited six schools in the morning to talk about respect and diversity and in the afternoon they were at Cooke Park to meet fans, hand out autographs and pose for photos.

Many children brought shirts and caps to be signed, while the NRL also had posters with a team photo of the Panthers that the two players signed for the many fans who turned up. “It is really cool to meet the Panthers players in person,” said a young Parkes player.

The NRL Community Carnival takes players throughout Australia and New Zealand this month to meet fans in more than 80 communities.

Now in its 17th year, the NRL Community Carnival is supported by every NRL club and NRL Ambassadors, and will reach more than 250,000 kids, visit more than 1,000 schools, travel more than 40,000 km and host more than 80 Junior Rugby League clinics in both countries.

Extremely hot and humid conditions did not stop a good field of players to turn up for last Saturday’s S & K Mann Carpet Cleaning Monthly Medal.

In A Grade Mitch McGlashan continued his brilliant form when he fired a superb 3 under par 68 to record the day’s best scratch score, while Steve Simpson cleaned up in the handicap section with 76 off the stick for a 67 nett. He topped off a great day by also claiming the Griffins Leading Edge Putting competition with just 24 putts.

In the minor grades Colin Barker claimed the B Grade scratch award with a 12 over par 83, and in the handicap it was Mayor Ken Keith with a solid 68 nett. In C Grade for players on handicaps of 18 plus, Gordon Christie fired 90 off the stick, while John Pearce topped the leader board with a 70 nett. The veterans award went to Gordon Christie with a 71 nett.

The Ladies Leone Stevenson led home a small field with an improved 73 nett.

The Parkes Golf Club hope to continue its brilliant start to the Central West District Golf Associations Pennants when Round 2 matches will be played at Bathurst Golf Club against Cowra on Sunday.

Last week’s Round 1 matches saw the locals victorious in three divisions against Forbes, while the no 2 division went down narrowly to Bathurst.
