IT’S NO SECRET… January has been a month of celebration for Ella and Amy Butler, who share a love of writing, when both of them won prizes for their literary efforts. Here they sit with the national anthology, Top Secret, containing Ella’s first publication of a short story.

The Butlers Did It

The secret is out - talent runs in the Butler family. January was an exceptional month for Ella and Amy Butler, with the motherdaughter duo each receiving recognition for their literary flair.

Amy was declared Best Novice Poet at the Elvis Festival’s Poets’ Breakfast. Then, just weeks later, her 12 year-old daughter Ella received the Student Cultural Award in recognition for her written skills, which was presented at the Australia Day ceremony.

Amy said her daughter’s nomination was a huge surprise. “It’s wonderful to know that someone in the community took enough notice. Because she’s home schooled, there haven’t really been the same oppor-

tunities for awards and recognition, so this has been a huge honour for us,” she said.

Ella’s nomination follows her first publication in Top Secret, a national anthology.

Her short story “Beware the Griffin” is a tale about children on a quest to save their parents.

“I’ve always loved fantasy, and mythology; dragons, phoenixes and griffins are my favourite,” Ella said. “But when it comes to writing, it’s not all about the story; description and grammar are really important, that’s what makes you care about what’s happening.”

Ella credits the Parkes Shire Library’s Dan Fredericks as one of her mentors. “Dan was probably the motivation for me getting published, and my mum is my inspiration for actually writing.”

Amy has a background in broadcast journalism and worked as a researcher and writer before she made the decision to home school her children. She’s written poetry for years, but this year was the first time she’d put it out there publicly. But despite her recent accolades, Amy’s current focus is on being a mentor to her children’s writing.

“Our family really values creativity and imagination. We bounce ideas off one another and love making up stories and sharing stories together,” she said.

As for Ella’s ambitions - she has already got plans for her first novel. Having earned such recognition, encouragement and support at such a young age, it’s safe to say Ella is ‘write’ on track.

Cool Water Saving Tips For Hot Weather

Tynan Matthews, a keen student of coding and digital technology, acquired a lot of new knowledge at a select summer camp last month.

Parkes Student Attends Bootcamp For Technology Buffs

One Parkes High School student was spending lots of time with algorithms, informatics and coding for a week during the summer holiday, while the rest of the country’s school population was lazing on the beach or at the pool.

Year 9 student Tynan Matthews was among 60 of Australia’s brightest technology buffs hand-picked to attend the very first digIT ICT Summer School at the Macquarie University in Sydney last month. “It was good being around other kids with similar interests,” said Tynan. “I learned a few cool things.”

The program, which runs over six months includes two residential camps and a mentoring program, will help students to take their skills in all aspects of digital literacy, science, technology, engineering and mathematics to the next level. They explored all aspects of information and communication technology through guest lectures, interactive sessions, practicals and field trips.

The visit to the Google Headquarters in Sydney impressed Tynan. “We were shown around the relaxation areas including craft and wood workshops, a virtual reality room, libraries, Lego rooms, cafés, restaurants and pop-up kitchens.

The 14-year-old from Parkes, the only student from the Central West to attend, was happy to make friends with students from other small towns in Australia he had never heard of.

Over the next six months, Tynan will be working on a project with another student and their mentor, which they will present at the winter school in June. “We still need to decide on our project,” said Tynan.

As for his future career plans, he hasn’t made up his mind yet. “I just want to keep on experimenting and learning for now.”

And when Tynan is not experimenting or learning, he likes to play cricket and relax playing on his Xbox with online friends.

Parkes Shire residents are being urged to conserve water, following an influx in water usage over summer.

The scorching temperatures across the region have placed an increased pressure on the local water supply.

Parkes Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure, Andrew Francis said in order to avoid tightening of restrictions, the community needed to limit water usage.

“To effectively manage water supply and security for residents, Council implements restrictions on water usage under the Local Government Regulation, to ensure water supply is preserved in times of drought or other water scarcity.

“Currently, level 1 water restrictions apply in the Parkes Shire, which prohibits the use of watering systems from 10am to 5pm. Residents are permitted to use microsprays, sprinklers and drip systems before 10am and after 5pm daily, while commercial premises are limited to watering outside the hours of 10am and 3pm.”

Andrew reminded residents to take advantage of the old brick pit, which can be used to water gardens, top up swimming pools and other non-consumptive uses around the house.

Here are some water saving ideas: Wait for a full load before running a dishwasher or washing machine; take shorter showers; turn off the tap while brushing teeth; leave grass clippings on the lawn after mowing to prevent water loss through evaporation; reuse the water from your washing machine cycle to water your garden; and use a trigger hose nozzle to avoid wasted water “Small every day actions around the home add up to big water savings overall, and go a long way to helping the environment,” Andrew said. RURAL ROUNDUP Animal Health Warning During Extreme Heat If you have not yet done so, you need to put plans in place for livestock and animals that may be impacted by extreme heat.

Record temperatures have been recorded during January making it the hottest month on record. The forecast is for temperatures to continue over 40 degrees Celsius for the next week.

According to Local Land Services Central West, heatwaves can be fatal for livestock, particularly for at-risk animals such as lambs and calves, older animals or animals in poor condition.

In preparing for extreme heat conditions, Local Land Services Vets offer some common sense advice for farmers and producers:

• Servicing most Fuel Injection Systems • Common Rail Filter Kits • Brassware • Glow Plugs • Make Injector and Brake Pipes

Make sure shade is available to protect animals from sun and wind. Check that stock have easy access to cool, clean water, preferably close to shaded areas animals can drink up to double the amount of water in hot weather. Minimise stock movements and only move animals in the cooler part of the day.

Monitor livestock regularly and check for any signs of heat exposure, including sweating, excessive panting and drooling.

Weekly Market Update Due to Thursday’s Australia Day Holiday, the week’s sales were held on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The market opened on Tuesday with a negative tone, leaving the NRI 20 cents cheaper. However, Wednesday’s market had a different feel with prices opening at the previous day’s levels and in many cases lots started showing improvement.

Style and spec again played a large role in market movement (the better the type the lesser the falls). The skirting market closely mirrored the fleece market, although, some low spec / high vm lots struggled to find support and were tending cheaper.

The crossbred market continued to struggle with further losses of around 20 cents with the exception of 28 micron which only lost 5 cents for the week. The oddment sector also suffered losses but not to the same degree, and Sydney and Fremantle gained ground on day two, setting a positive tone for next week’s sale.

Sales continue next week with currently 42,584 bales rostered for sale in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle.

The day of love hearts, red roses and romance is just around the corner… Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day, is a day that many Australians celebrate with someone they love.

The day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognised as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world.

According to Wikipedia, the day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The most common symbols of Valentine’s Day are heart shapes, which are used to decorate many things, including cards, trees, wrapping paper, cookies and gift boxes. Other symbols associated with Valentine’s Day are pairs of birds, cute teddy bears, Cupid and his arrows and couples kissing or embracing. The colors red and pink are often associated with Valentine’s Day.

TWINKLE Toes Payton Swindle is ready for ballet classes this year.

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like about living here?

I have lived in Parkes for the last eight years, previously I am from Broken Hill.

Parkes is a beautiful town to live in. The people are so friendly and it didn’t take long at all to feel like ‘locals!’

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work at Parkes Early Childhood Centre. I love my job, all the ladies I work with are amazing and the families and children that come into our centre have always been so nice. I love working with children, there is something very special about watching and teaching young children to learn and grow.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I love spending time with my family. My children are very active and I love being able to watch them enjoy their chosen activities. Some days it’s soccer gala days, others dancing concerts.

What are you really good at? With such a busy family life, I’d like to think that I’m a fantastic organiser.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I’d love to be able to fly! We do a fair bit of travelling, so being able to fly could definitely come in handy.

What is your pet hate? Lateness... I like to always be early for everything if I can.

Tell us about your best holiday ever.

We like to have very relaxing holidays.

We have a houseboat on the Murray/Darling Rivers and that would have to be my favourite holiday spot. It’s very quiet and calm, lots of swimming, fishing and barbeques.

Ballet is a great way for kids to get fit and active. It is also an excellent place for beginners to start learning dance, and for seasoned dancers to hone their skills.

Twinkle Toes Dance Studio will be hosting Royal Academy of Dance (R.A.D.) Ballet exams this year! After studying for two years to achieve her Certificate of Ballet Teaching Studies, Miss Bre is now a Registered Teacher. This status with the prestigious R.A.D. is a treasured skill in the Central West, with only a few teachers in the region holding this qualification.

Wood-Work For The Dole

If you’ve ventured from Clarinda Street a little, you might have stumbled upon a curious new shopfront on Dalton Street. The Brighter Futures Lending Hands workshop is a unique blend of retail space, workshop, and not-for-profit program for the longterm unemployed. Inside you’ll find a team of people practicing their newly acquired woodwork and craft skills.

The participants work with recycled materials, such as wooden pallets or discarded furniture that can be repurposed into something new and functional. The crafty crew have made coffee tables, book cases, glory boxes, and a garden bench that was created out of an old bed. They’ve even built their own wall as a practical and cost-effective solution to the sawdust generated by the woodwork.

Creative Supervisor Debbie Robson said that it’s a fantastic program that gives the participants practical skills in a simulated workplace. “It’s great to see the group share skills and work together as a team,” she

said. “There are usually stereotypes around the unemployed, but we’ve found that people really want to do something and be involved.”

Woodwork supervisor Mark Horner said he enjoys mentoring others. “You get satisfaction that you’ve been able to help them.

You’re giving them confidence and hopes for their future,” he said.

Patrick, a participant, said he was looking forward to completing a wishing well for a private commission. “It is a really supportive environment, and it’s good to learn to use tools that I haven’t used before,” he said.

John has been in the program for several months. “It’s a great learning experience, I’ve developed woodworking skills I didn’t have before,” he said.

The good news? Everything they make is for sale, at very affordable rates. Members of the public can purchase hand-made, recycled furniture that has its own bespoke charm and a guaranteed sustainable origin.

Canberra Calling Young Indigenous Leaders

Applications are open for the 2017 National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP).

The NIYP is a week-long leadership program for Indigenous Australians aged 16 to 25, to be held in Canberra from 23rd to 29th May. The Australian Electoral Commission will bring 50 young Indigenous Australians to Canberra - six from each state and territory and two from the Torres Strait Islands.

The centrepiece of the NIYP is a two-day simulated parliament in the House of Representatives chamber at Old Parliament House. Participants will debate bills and issues important to themselves and their communities.

No specific skills or experience are required to participate in the NIYP, apart from a desire to have a say in what’s going on in your community.

Applications are open until Friday, 3rd March. Participants will be chosen based on their ideas, community activity and leadership potential. To apply visit www.aec.gov. au/indigenous.

PARKES SPORT COLOURFUL KITES ... There were plenty of keen kite fliers at the Kite Festival at Northparkes Oval on Australia Day, but unfortunately it was a perfectly quiet morning... the kids’ enthusiasm and muscle power saw some kites getting air borne for as long as the running continued. Everyone still had a whale of a time... even though the big whale kite could not be launched!

Cooking Up A Storm On Golf Course Veteran golfer Graham Cooke bounced back to his brilliant best when he took out Saturday’s 3rd round of the BWR Accountants and Advisors Summer competition.

In very hot conditions Cooke, playing off a 31 handicap, set up the victory with a brilliant front 9 holes that saw him return a great 23 points or the equivalent of 5 shots under his handicap to record his first victory in nearly six months.

Runner-up was Lindsay Elliott who recorded 42 points, just one shot ahead of third place Frankie Cock. She continued her brilliant form in returning a great 5 under handicap score of 41 points.

Ball winners on Saturday were 42 Lindsay Elliott, 41 Frankie Cock, 39 Robert Hey, Mitch McGlashan and Margaret Hogan, 38 Rod Kiley, Laurie Wakefield, Tom Medcalf, Tim Baker, Colleen Flynn and Bob Barter and surviving the countback on 37 was Cathy Kelly.

The Nearest the Pin jackpot on the Idlerite Tyrepower 1st hole was not won, however

Richard Hutchison claimed 20% of the jackpot and won 16 balls.

The other Nearest the Pin awards saw Steve Simpson clean up on the Griffins Leading Edge 4th hole. This shot allowed Simpson to claim the Money Hole award too. On the Dirt Doctor Landscaping 6th hole, Mitch McGlashan got the first of a double. His second award came on the difficult Westlime-sponsored 15th hole, while on the Harvey Norman 11th hole it was Lindsay Elliott who got to celebrate.

The day’s final two awards, the Nearest the Pins in two shots on the Parkes Ready Mixed Concrete 9th hole and the PJL Groups 18th hole, saw Mark Job and Lindsay Elliott take the honours.
