MAYORAL NOTES Residents of Parkes are encouraged to have their say on the proposed route of the Newell Highway heavy vehicle bypass. Minister for Roads and Freight, Hon Duncan Gay was in Parkes to announce the 10.5 km route, which is set to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of trucks travelling through Parkes. Roads & Maritime Service (RMS) will be carrying out community consultations between 8th December and 10th February at various locations. Emergency Packs To Reduce Quota Of Worries For Victims

The Parkes Quota Club has extended a helping hand to victims of domestic violence this week.

The club donated 23 emergency packs to the Police Lachlan Local Area in Parkes for use throughout the command area of Parkes, Forbes, Condobolin, Peak Hill, Tottenham, Trundle, Tullamore and Lake Cargelligo.

“It often happens that victims of domestic violence need to leave their homes in a hurry with only the clothes on them,” said Senior Constable Daniel Greef.

“With these emergency packs we can give them some essentials to carry on.”

The packs contain items like a toothbrush, shampoo, a washer, a hair brush and other personal items.

said Daniel was invited as guest speaker and the club asked him what they could do to help. “The need for these packs were identified and we were happy to take it on as a project.”

Janet O’Donoghue, Community Service Director of Quota said it would be an ongoing project. “Members make the bags and we buy the items from funds we have raised.”

This was the second delivery of bags after the Police handed out the initial 12 packs donated earlier this year.

Senior Constable Sandra Barton said the delivery of the packs came at the right time as many social services shut down over the Christmas period. “It is good to have these packs available to hand out to victims.”

Young Harvey is getting ready for the special Christmas Storytime at the Parkes Library next Wednesday.

Christmas Storytime: Parkes Library has invited a very special visitor who wears a red suit to celebrate Christmas with Parkes families on Wednesday, 21st December at 10:30am. Library team members Andrea Lovell, Claire Cassell and Debbie Gould have a morning of Christmas stories, song and dance planned. “The Library team will have on their best Christmas clothes and invite children to dress up too to add to the festivities,” said Andrea.

Career opportunities at Council: The Parkes Shire Council has exciting career opportunities on offer for young people in the region. There are a number of positions available in various fields including traineeships in town planning and ranger services, cadetships in civil engineering, school based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT) in business and information technology for students entering Year 11 next year.

Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager, Kent Boyd said these opportunities were a fantastic stepping stone for students wondering what’s next after they finish school.

Good turnout: The Carols in the Park on Sunday night saw one of the largest attendances ever with about 1,500 people turning up for a beautiful night of Christmas celebrations. The Parkes Shire Band was on stage all night accompanying performers and carols sung by the crowd. Other performers included school choirs, Tapestry, and solo performances by Rebecca Evans, Michelle Allan, Bob Gould, Paul Brown, Liz Naveau, Elle McCutcheon, Belinda Boland and others. The Parkes School of Dance also performed for the first time this year.

“It was a great community night out,” said Liz Naveau of the Ministers Association.

How do you feel now the HSC is over, and what is next for you?

Brydie Hilder Year 12 Red Bend Catholic College: It feels amazing to have finished. I’m not too nervous about getting the results, it is what it is. I’ve been accepted for early entry into Nursing at the University of Wollongong, but I’m deferring so I can take a gap year. I’m planning on staying around town and working, I’d love to travel a bit too.

Lyndal Suffolk Year 12 Parkes Christian School: Mostly I feel relaxed - it’s a big weight off having it done. I moved from Queensland where it’s a completely different system, so the HSC was a shock and quite stressful. Next year is a little up in the air; I’m planning on doing RN, either in Brisbane, Bathurst or Dubbo. I already have a Cert II in Health Service Assistance, which I did through TVET as part of my studies.

I feel relieved! I’m the first one in my immediate family to have done the HSC. There were moments when it was really hard, and then others when it felt a bit easier than it was meant to. Next year I’m going to do my Cert III in Early Childhood and see what happens from there.

Living and Lifestyle Vital Support On Offer Over Festive Period With the final weeks of 2016 upon us, it’s a time to reflect on the past year and what the New Year will bring, but for some, this time of year is challenging.

Fortunately, many online and phone services remain open to offer vital support to those facing tough times this festive season. Headspace and Cancer Council are just two of the services people can turn to if it all gets too much.

The holiday season can pose many challenges for people who are affected by cancer, but by using the range of services available, people affected by cancer can discuss their experiences and share coping strategies to help normalise concerns this festive period.

The new Cancer Council Online Community provides anyone who has been affected by cancer the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and find information and support in a safe forum. It’s available 24/7 from any online device, regardless of location.

Cancer Council NSW’s Lead Supportive Care Manager, Hannah Baird said the Online Community aims to reduce isolation by encouraging people affected by cancer to share their stories with other people in similar situations.

“What we are seeing through our peer support programs is more and more people are now turning to digital platforms for information and support, to connect with others who can relate to what they are experiencing.”

During these times, it is valuable for families and friends to be aware of signs and symptoms that something might be wrong with their loved ones. Being withdrawn, expressing ongoing worry, or irritability are just a few changes to look out for.

If you need support or advice, headspace is here to help. The National Youth Mental Health Foundation, headspace, provides support to young people aged 12-25 years old who are going through a tough time.

This can include support around mental health, physical health, work and study, or alcohol and other drugs, and the service is also open to parents.

PJL Irrigation Pumps Into Life PJL has launched a division for the sale and service of irrigation and pumps from its Parkes operations. PJL has been operating in Parkes since lst July this year and employs in excess of 20 staff. Arne Murray is heading up the irrigation and pumps side of the business and has relocated to Parkes with his wife and two children. Arne has been in this industry for 12 years, working previously for Lister Irrigation in Queensland. Arne brings a wealth of experience to this role, and he has worked on domestic irrigation systems to large scale agricultural and industrial pumping systems. Swimmer’s Shoulder

Part 2 Shoulder impingement during swimming is largely due to dynamic muscle imbalances and biomechanical faults.

Dynamic muscle imbalances can be addressed by strengthening exercises for the rotator cuff and scapular stabilisers together with stretches for the muscles at the back of the shoulder. One good exercise is to stand facing a wall with your arm raised to shoulder height and elbow straight. Hold a tennis ball to the wall by leaning through your shoulder and pinch your shoulder blades together. Roll the ball in small circles for 15 seconds first clockwise then counter clockwise until you become fatigued or two minutes, whichever comes first.

Biomechanical faults can be addressed by correcting your swim technique. Achieving good symmetrical body rotation through the development of an efficient bilateral breathing pattern helps to avoid shoulder impingement during the catch and pull through phase of the freestyle stroke. If you already have shoulder pain it may be helpful to shorten your stroke and avoid the use of hand paddles.

Hand placement during entry to the water should also be monitored. Instead of entering thumb first change your technique to enter with a flat hand or fingertip first. This is made easier by avoiding reaching across your midline. A thumb first entry works the shoulder internal rotators excessively and when multiplied by approximately 3,200 strokes per hour contributes heavily to the muscle imbalance of strong internal rotators and weak external rotators causing shoulder impingement.

Most swimmers pull through with a straight arm or dropped elbow. This loads the shoulder muscles excessively rather than utilising the larger and stronger muscles of the chest and upper back.

Making these simple changes can help you achieve many hours of pain free swimming.

Compassionate Candles Shine Light On Grief Christmas is a celebration of family and togetherness, but for some there is an empty seat at the table and a void that can never be filled. The loss of a child is an enduring grief, but there are certain times each year when that absence is felt more keenly; birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas.

Last Sunday dozens of families gathered at Lions Park for a candle light vigil paying tribute to their loss. It was a deeply moving ceremony, with meaningful readings and rituals, providing a safe space for the kind of grief only some of us are acquainted with.

Whether they were honouring a son taken at the prime of his life, or a child born sleeping, families from across the shire united to share in their sorrow.

The event was organised by the Parkes Chapter of the Compassionate Friends, and welcomed bereaved parents, grandparents, siblings, extended family and friends to pay tribute to their grief.

Families placed a photograph of their loved one on a memory tree, and were invited to take keepsake ornaments home to place on the family Christmas tree. Heartfelt credos and poems were read before the families were invited to light a candle in memory of their loved one.

This alone was a poignant gesture, but the Parkes’ gathering wasn’t alone. All over the

world Compassionate Friends gathered to light candles for their loss on the second Sunday in December. When the candles burnt out in one time zone, they were lit in another, and so flickering flames of remembrance slowly encircled the world.

At the end of the ceremony balloons were released into the sky; little bursts of colour that drifted up and disappeared into the infinite blue.

The event was a touching tribute that gave families an opportunity to acknowledge their grief, together.

Great Mates Play Tribute In Honour Of Dig Richards Australia’s James Dean, the late Dig Richards, will be inducted onto the The Wall Of Fame at the 25th Parkes Elvis Festival.

The induction on Wednesday, 11th January 2017 at 2pm will be followed by The Wall of Fame Show in honour of Dig at the Parkes Services Club at 4pm. Fellow Wall of Famers Rob E.G., Little Pattie and Lucky Starr will perform. Dig’s brother Doug Richards, who played with Rob E.G. and Lucky Starr and lives in Parkes these days, will also play, as well as Leon Isackson, who used to be the drummer in Dig’s band.

The tribute show will focus on music of Dig’s era and include the two hit songs Doug wrote for his brother.

Dig, who was born in Dunedoo, was one of Australia’s first wave of Rock ‘n Rollers, and one of the Top Five Australian Rock Superstars of the 1958/59 era with Johnny O’Keefe, Col Joye and Joynny Devlin, who have all been inducted onto the Wall of Fame.

Rob E.G. and Lucky Starr followed Dig on to Bandstand and Six O’Clock Rock in 1959, and Little Pattie joined them in the early 60’s, each of them soon becoming members of Australia’s elite Top 10 recording artists and TV perfomers.

Rob E.G., also known as Robie Porter, toured with Dig in those years and became very close friends with him. Robie became

a hit record artist in the early 60s and then moved on to Australia’s all-time Number 1 hit maker producing artists like Daddy Cool, Marcia Hines, Air Supply, Rick Springfield and Tommy Emmanuel.

Robie reminisced about his time with Dig telling The Parkes Phoenix: “Dig was one of the best in show business I have ever met. He was first class.”

He said many people had unfortunately forgotten about him because he died at the young age of 42.

Dig, Rob and Lucky toured Australia many times together with The Delltones, and Robie felt it was very appropriate for them to play together in this tribute in honour of their great mate, Dig.

Yasmin Receives Prestigious Science Award

Parkes High School Year 11 student Yasmin Potts received the Victor Chang Science Award at a ceremony in Dubbo recently. This award acknowledges Yasmin’s achievement and her passion for science.

Yasmin’s passion for science was evident in her application and interview for the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra in January 2017. She was successful and is looking forward to this opportunity to work at the Australian National University for two weeks, alongside other students and researchers who share her passion for science. Yasmin achieved first in Physics, first in Chemistry, first in Mathematics and first in Mathematics Extension 1 in Year 11.

Professor Jamie Vandenberg from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute said: “A career in science can be hugely fulfilling, but you need to be passionate. Science is about trying to understand and solve nature’s problems, no matter how big or small.”

The Victor Chang School Science Awards were established over a decade ago to honour bright, young students excelling in the subject, with the hope that they would consider a career in the field.

Parkes High School Principal, Sandra Carter said: “Yasmin is a deserved winner of this prestigious award. Open Mic Gives Opportunities For Young Performers

Local talent got to strut their stuff on stage at the Cambridge Hotel last Saturday during the December CHILL ZONE, a monthly open mic event that’s becoming the place to be for Parkes performers.

Batty, the owner of Batty’s Music, got the ball rolling on CHILL ZONE in September, and says it’s just getting bigger and better.

“There’s not enough opportunities for the youth to get experience playing live,” he said. “Some of our performers have now got paid gigs, so it’s great to see how this kind of opportunity really makes a difference.”

The CHILL ZONE generally runs from 2 to 7pm on the first Saturday of the month, although it may be rescheduled to accommodate other community events. Performers register with Batty on the day and are given a slot in the rotating lineup.

The open mic session draws in a lot of local talent, but also attracts creatives from further afield. People have come from

Forbes, Dubbo, Condoblin, Eugowra, and even as far as Bathurst.

Birdee Sideris has been going to CHILL ZONE since it started. “It’s a great environment, really encouraging and supportive,” she said. “Even if you’re shy and don’t like performing in front of people, it’s wonderful, supportive atmosphere.”

Record producer and sound engineer Stephan Van Der Merwe works with Batty to make CHILL ZONE happen. “It’s good for the kids,” he said. “But it’s not just for musos – it’s really an open mic event. We have had ventriloquists, stand-up comedians, poets… you don’t have to be in a band. It’s just a chance for creative people to get their stuff out there.”

While most pub music events are for adult audiences, CHILL ZONE is an allages occasion. Anyone of any age can take the stage, plus it makes a great family outing, where kids can tag along to enjoy the show.

Police in the Lachlan Local Area Command are reminding residents to remain vigilant to avoid being the victim of opportunistic thieves this summer. Senior Constable Daniel Greef warned that most intruders hope to avoid confrontations. “So whenever you leave your home, lock all doors and windows, but maintain a ‘lived in’ appearance by using timer devices to turn lights and radios on/off at different times.” He also said it was important to secure belongings and not leave valuables, handbags, wallets, car keys and cash lying around the house.

Parkes Leads The Way In Wheelchair Basketball

Wheelchair Basketball has officially been launched in Parkes making it the only place outside Sydney and the Central Coast to offer this opportunity to people with disabitlities.

“We have five disabled children currently with their siblings filling in to make up ten players to have a game of five on a side,” said Melinda Pauluaskas, Regional Co-ordinator of Wheelchair Basektball in Parkes.

For Dom Woods it is a great opportunity to make friends and to have fun. Hamish Neville said: “I love having a go at everything.”

Anyone with a physical disability of any age is welcome to join the group. “At the moment we have members with different disabilities including a brain tumour, cerebral palsy, Neurofirbromatosis Type 1 and a spinal cord injury,” said Melinda.

She added that abled bodied people can join as associate members, but would not be able to take part in official tournaments or events.

Rochelle Smith, coach and trainer who has been instrumental in getting the group going, said it was not all about the sport, but getting together meant so much to members in forming friendships and bonds. “It also means a lot to parents to be part of a group and not feel they are on their own.”

The Parkes group is planning an open day early next year to introduce the sport to the wider community and get more members to join.

FUTURE PARALYMPIAN… Year 5 student Victoria Simpson took part in the National Athletic Carnival in Homebush, Sydney for the very first time earlier this month. She not only came home as the third best 11-year-old shot put AWD (multiclass) athlete in Australia, but is also the record holder for 11-year-old shot put and discus in classification F55. Victoria competed against athletes from all the other states in Australia. “It was a great feeling,” said Victoria holding her bronze medal proudly. Victoria has been in a wheelchair since age three after a spinal cord injury from a car accident.

She is very active and plays wheelchair basketball, tennis, swims, does horse riding and sit down water skiing.

Much To Celebrate At Parkes Christian School The Parkes Christian School HSC class of 2016 has much to celebrate as they have attained some wonderful achievements.

The PCS community is once again extremely proud of its students and their dedication to this rigorous and highly regarded examination.

Well before the release of the HSC results, the school was proud and pleased to announce that a number of the HSC cohort had already received offers for university courses for next year. Other students are waiting to hear about applications under the School Recommendation Scheme through the University Admission Centre.

Year 12 students celebrated their final day at school with a fun assembly on 23rd September.
