Parkes Elvis Festival Got Its Mojo Working

The Parkes Elvis Festival is collecting awards this year.

Last Friday the festival was named winner of the prestigious Dobija Print World Events and Tourism Award at the 2016 NSW/ACT Regional Achievement & Community Awards in Wollongong.

The annual awards program, presented

by Prime7 and supported by the Commonwealth Bank, recognises groups, businesses, individuals and communities who play a vital role in enhancing the social, environmental and economic prosperity of country NSW and the ACT. Parkes Elvis Festival was one of four finalists in the Events and Tourism category, taking home the title ahead of Tamworth Country Music Festival, Bluesfest and Deni Ute Muster.

Festival Director Cathy Treasure said “It’s an honour to have won this award given the calibre of the nominees in this category.”

“In 2016, the Festival enjoyed more than 22,000 visitors, had a global media reach of 80 million and injected $11 million into the regional economy.”

Parkes Shire Councillor Ken McGrath said it was exciting for all those involved to receive the recognition, especially with the Festival’s 25th Anniversary in 2017.

This is the second award the 2016 Festival has won this year, having taken out the Festivals and Events category at the 2016

Regional Tourism Awards.

Parkes Elvis Festival has won TV advertising on Prime7 as part of the prize.

The festival is also a finalist at the NSW Tourism Awards, with a winner to be named at a presentation dinner in Sydney next Thursday.

This is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of Council employees and volunteers without whom the festival would not have been such a success. The 25th anniversary is shaping up to be the most accessible festival yet, with visitors able to travel to the event by road, rail and air! Aeroplane charters will be available from Sydney for the first time.

Council has taken a proactive approach to road safety and repair prior to the harvest season by working with growers and heavy vehicle operators to mitigate potential hazards on the Shire’s roads. I would like to thank heavy vehicle operators for their understanding and patience, as Council crews worked to restore the road network following the period of wet weather. I would also like to commend all motorists for exercising extra care during harvest, and sharing the roads accordingly during this busy period.

The 2017 Parkes Elvis Festival will be the most accessible festival yet, with many options to travel by road, rail and air. For the first time in the Parkes Elvis Festival’s 25 year history, daily return aeroplane charters will transport city-siders from Sydney to Parkes.

In another first, a daily bus shuttle will run from Canberra with a complete luxury travel and accommodation package. The package includes return coach travel from Canberra to Parkes, four nights’ stay with breakfast at 4 star accommodation in Orange, and transfers each day.

Cowra Motor Inn is also offering a fourday package that includes accommodation, coach transfers, selected meals and event tickets. Other options are Visit Orange providing daily return shuttles on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and Cowra Tourism providing daily return shuttles on the Saturday and Sunday.

The daily Forbes shuttle returns with an increased service to and from the festival, while bus services to Peak Hill and the CSIRO Radio Telescope are also returning in 2017. It is expected the number of visitors to increase from the 22,000 attending this year.

Three of The Australian Ballet dancers who stayed in Parkes recently: Isobelle Dashwood, Brodie James and Saranja Crowe.

Ballet Memories: Many Parkes families travelled to Orange during the recent school holidays to see The Australian Ballet Regional Tour perform Giselle. What most people don’t know is that members of the touring company were also travelling from Parkes to Orange for their performances.

As the Bathurst 1000 was held on the same weekend and there was hardly any accommodation available in Orange, Parkes hosted 30 dancers, as well as The Australian Ballet’s Artistic Director David McAllister.

In addition the dancing troupe had to keep up with their practicing schedule and rented the Parkes School of Dance (PSD) studios for a day. PSD received a Giselle poster signed by the cast, as well as a signed pair of pointe shoes worn by Dana Stephensen. She danced the role of Giselle during the Orange performances. Once framed, these special pieces will be on display in the School’s foyer inspiring Parkes dancers of all ages!

Free concert: Music lovers will enjoy a free concert on 29th November at the Parkes Presbyterian Church on the corner of Gap St and Hill St at 7pm. The aim of the concert is to provide an opportunity for music students to share pieces they have been working on with others and to grow in their confidence in performing.

Jac’s Art Decorates Bar After Owners’ Own “Hart”

Parkes Remembers Our Fallen

On Remembrance Day we reflect on the heavy price that more than 102,000 Australian soldiers have paid for peace. It is observed on the 11th of November; the anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War, and offers tribute to those who have suffered in all wars. In Australia we pay our respects with a minute of silence to reflect on those who have fallen or suffered in war. Public commemorations are held across the nation to honour their sacrifice.

Dozens of Parkes Shire residents attended a Remembrance Day Commemoration Service at 11am last Friday to acknowledge the local lives lost to distant wars. The service was hosted by the Returned and Services League of Australia, New South Wales Branch, Parkes Sub-Branch. The service included the laying of wreaths and the citation of names of the fallen, to ensure that those who were lost are not forgotten.

Arthur Parker, President of the Parkes RSL sub branch, invited students to read the names of our fallen soldiers.

Tullamore Student Knows Her ABCs

Ava Curr, daughter of Paul and Kelly Curr, was spellbound representing the Western Region in the Premier’s Spelling Bee Finals on the 9th of November at the ABC studios in Sydney.

The year 4 student from Tullamore Central School was the Junior Section winner of the Regionals in Dubbo, becoming one of 43 juniors to make it to the finals. Nine yearold Ava made it to the second stage before the spell was broken.

“Ava will never leave the d out of porridge again,” her mother Kelly said. “But she found the experience exciting and fun, and didn’t stop smiling the whole time – even when they announced her word was incorrect.”

Ava met ABC presenters Juanita Phillips and Stan Grant, and NSW Premier Mike Baird presented her with a prize.

Whilst Ava has lost her affection for porridge, she loves ice-cream and kittens, and hopes to be an artist or actor when she grows up.

Since day one Jac Clark’s art has featured throughout The Railway Hotel so when it came to decorating the walls of the new Hart Bar there was no question about what it would be. “We are lucky to be able to hang some of Jac’s prints and we also purchased one of her new original’s, which is seen in the Hart Bar logo and advertising. That is really exciting!” said Kasie. Kasie Ferguson and Bianca Sheridan have owned the Railway for six years and have just finished building the new bar on the second level named after their little boy, Hart! “When we walked in all those years ago I knew it would be something special, but I never thought it would be this amazing! The people who have worked on this project made our dreams come true. I can’t thank them enough for it,” said Bianca.

Hart Bar is booked out most weekends until Christmas, but next weekend Hart Bar will be open for lunch and dinner Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Jac Clark’s art on display to celebrate the official opening.

The exhibition is titled Figure and explores the boldness of a monochrome palette. The original large scale artworks will be available for purchase with limited edition prints of each piece.

All You Need Is Love

More than 200 people were part of a very special and inspiring afternoon in Parkes last Saturday at the Celebrating Neurodiversity event.

People came from as far as Sydney and Leeton to listen to Chris Ulmer from the USA and Tim and Judy Sharp from Brisbane.

Judy told the incredible story of how she was told to put her son away and forget about him when he was diagnosed with autism at age 3. “I was told he would never be able to love me and he would never speak.

I was devastated, but in the car Tim was wiping my tears away.”

Judy never gave up on her son. She recalls a huge breakthrough when out of desperation to communicate with Tim, she started drawing stick figures. “As soon as I put the pencil down, he pushed my hand back to the pencil.” Tim started drawing every day and at 11 invented Laser Beak Man. Today he is an internationally acclaimed artist with an impressive list of achievements.

Judy’s message is that no one can tell the future and therefore all children must have the opportunity to reach their potential.

Chris Ulmer continued the message of love and encouragement with his talk.

As a special education teacher he felt he had stumbled down a rabbit hole and discovered a world that was beautiful after he had spent three years with the same students. He started a blog posting videos of his students explaining life from their perspective. When a video of him complimenting each student individually at the start of the day went viral, he knew this was the way to spearhead worldwide acceptance of neurodiversity. He is currently travelling the world to teach and interview neurodiverse individuals for his blog called Special Books by Special Kids.

Chris always focuses on the positive in people and told the story of how he helped a student who could not run more then three steps without falling down to eventually finish a 5km run in 22 minutes. “Every

Friday 18 November 2016 Page 5 day we celebrated the number of steps he managed to do without falling, but not once did I say a word about him falling down.”

Chris, who did eight interviews in Parkes, encourages everyone to like the videos as he firmly believes this would change the way individuals with a diagnosis are perceived in the community.

One of the organisers of the event, Angela Wilson of the Central West Autism and Special Needs Support Group said the feedback had been incredible. The group’s Facebook page was flooded with messages of people saying how much the afternoon had meant to them.

Humans have strange habits. One strange habit many of us have is grinding our teeth. It may sound unusual, but most of us have this habit. Medically this is called Bruxism. It is not a harmful condition, but if it’s done on a regular basis it may damage teeth, and is known as chronic grinding. It can result in tooth loss and can also affect your jaws and how your face looks. Generally people grind their teeth while they are sleeping, but there are two other reasons why grinding occurs: stress and anxiety. The stranger fact is that people do not know they are grinding their teeth as it happens when they are sleeping. This results in headaches and a sore jaw. Your parents, your spouse or even your friends will be the best people to tell you whether you suffer from this problem while sleeping.

As soon as you find out you suffer from teeth grinding, you need to see your dentist. You can have a splint fitted, which helps in preventing teeth from grinding. If it is caused by stress you need to attend stress relieving sessions or start doing regular exercise.

You can use muscle relaxants but try to avoid getting into medications. There are certain foods which if avoided, can help in reducing teeth grinding. These include: • Any food containing caffeine, such as chocolate, cola and coffee.

• Alcohol intensifies grinding.

• Avoid chewing on pencils, pens etc.

• Before going to sleep you can use a warm wash cloth on your face. This will relax your jaws.

As far as kids are concerned, nearly 15% to 35% grind their teeth and mostly during the time when their baby teeth are coming out or when their permanent teeth are developing. Why do they grind their teeth? The reasons are mostly the same as that for adults.

How long have you lived in Parkes? I was born in Parkes but left to complete my BA in Advertising and Marketing in Bathurst. I continued on to the Sunshine Coast where I studied Graphic Design and Photography while working in a photo lab, and then moved to Port Macquarie to work in communications. I came back home in 2012 to my family and friends.

What do you enjoy the most about living in Parkes? Being a rural kid growing up on a large property, I have a great appreciation for the land and love the friendly, caring nature of the locals.

What do you do for work? I work for the Parkes Phoenix newspaper as an Advertising Executive and run my own Photography business called Chemical Creations Photography.

What do you enjoy most about your work? I really enjoy all the amazing people I get to meet through both workplaces.

What makes your day? The fact that I enjoy my jobs and have two awesome puppies at home along with a lovely partner, family and friends makes life pretty spectacular!

Whether you bought your business or whether you set it up from scratch, no doubt you had a vision. To turn your visions into reality takes hard work and planning.

Success does not come overnight.

A small business owner needs to wear many hats: personnel manager, finance manager, information technology manager, inventory manager, and the list goes on.

No one can be a master of all these tasks.

There are just not enough hours in the day.

Whilst running your own business can be a challenge, it can also be very satisfying. The key is to concentrate on your strengths, and to outsource or delegate the other tasks where possible. If you are lacking a vital skill get someone to teach you.

In order to make your vision a reality you need a plan.

A business plan does not have to be a long document. You need to know how your product fills a need, who has that need, what people are willing to pay for your product, how you are going to deliver your product, how you will finance your business, who you will need to help you and how you can do it better than your competitors.

Your plans need to be flexible; if something isn’t working it needs to be fixed. Problems need to be recognised, sooner rather than later. Following an outdated business plan (or even worse not having a plan), can ruin your chances of succeeding.

If you don’t have a plan, you should plan to have one! If you need help, find someone with the skills to help you.

Kindy Kids Excursion To Explore The Environment

Bears Are Not Born To Dance

Year 4 students at Parkes Public School raised more than $240 in a Dancing Bear Appeal last week.

Funds raised will be donated to World Animal Protection, an organisation at the forefront of the fight to free bears from a life of misery.

Students first learned of the issue watching a story on Behind the News (BTN) on ABC3.

They then studied a book, The Deliverance of Dancing Bears by Elizabeth Stanley.

Students were very moved by the story and decided to take action. They first wrote persuasive texts on Why Dancing Bears Must Be Banned! They found that World Animal Protection (WAP) was the most reputable organisation. Three of the expositions by students of 4R will be displayed on the Supporters Wall of WAP in Sydney.

Class 4R also asked all primary students to bring in a small donation to help the bears and raised much more than expected.

Kindergarten students from Parkes Public School got out of the classroom and into nature during a spring excursion to Bushman’s Dam. The excursion was organised by Marg Applebee of Central West Lachlan Landcare and Michael Chambers of Parkes Shire Council, and provided a range of hands-on activities that focussed on living things.

A replica model of an urban wetland demonstrated how vital water is. The interactive lesson used dye to show how easily chemicals can get into our creeks and dams.

In another activity, students sampled water and used magnifying glasses to identify some of the tiny creatures that live in the dam, learning that water-bugs indicate the health of the waterways.

The native animal lesson used puppets to engage the budding biologists while they learnt about habitats and the threats posed by land clearing, weeds and feral pests.

The students also potted vegetable seeds, which the young green-thumbs took home to nurture.

Are Core Stability Exercises A Good Idea?

Everybody knows the plank exercise, but does performing this type of core stability exercise actually help people with low back pain?

Physiotherapists, Professor Peter O’Sullivan from Curtin University and Professor Paul Hodges from The University of Queensland, wrote the book on spinal stability exercises. They did a lot of research into the abdominal muscles in the 1990’s and the focus on Transversus Abdominis came from their work. So what are they saying now?

The plank exercise involves a person on their elbows and toes while holding their body stiff for a period of time. This is not what core stability means, says Professor Hodges. If you think about most functions, we actually need the spine to move. Core stability is about getting the spine to move.

Professor O’Sullivan says many people with back pain are already too rigid. Their muscles have already tensed up as a protective mechanism due to pain. Static exercises like planking can actually be counterproductive. Tensing up a structure that is already tense doesn’t make much sense. Instead we should be relaxing the muscles around our trunk when we have back pain.

So where does that leave us? Should we be telling the gym instructor to take a jump next time they ask for a plank? If we don’t have low back pain planks are fine. Better still are dynamic exercises that require us to naturally activate our core muscles such as squats. If we have low back pain, core activation exercises along with movement and learning to turn off over active muscles beat planks hands down.

The spine is designed to move.

Green Takes Pybar John Green snared his first Pybar Handicap Challenge played in strong westerly winds on Sunday.

One of the favourites Ian Phipps was the first of the field of 19 players to succumb on the 1st hole after a chip off with Brian Hogan.

Chip Offs were to be the order on the majority of the first nine holes as Warren Blatch, Victor Gaidzionis, Brian Hogan, Robert Cheney, Wayne Butler, Bernie McCabe, Lachlan Buesnell and Cameron Butler found themselves looking on by the half way mark.

After lunch the remaining ten players ventured out with one aim to survive. An errant second shot by Michael Smith saw him go out, and on the Par 3, 11th hole defending titleholder, Ross Smith found the green side bunker. Mark Kelly was next to go as he floundered on the Par 4, 12th hole and on the Par 5, 13th hole the trees on left ended the Colin Barker run. After several near escapes Chris Goodies’ luck deserted him at the 14th hole in a chip off with Denis Howard. Howard’s luck ran out on the Par 15th hole as he ran up a double bogey.

With just 3 holes remaining it was down to

four players: last minute substitution, John Green, Phil Barnard, Joey Van Opynen and David Stevenson. The sledging started in earnest and it was Stevenson who was first to be eliminated in a three way chip off.

At the 17th event favourite Joey Van Opynen inexplicitly missed a short putt that was to end his hopes. This left Barnard and Green to battle it out on the short Par 4, 18th hole and after both players recorded solid pars they faced a daunting chip off that saw Green come out tops.

Event sponsor Paul Rouse of Pybar Mining congratulated both players on their success.

Australian cricketer Jeff Thomson will be the special guest at Sunday’s 3 Person Ambrose fundraising event for the Central West Autism Awareness & Special Needs Awareness Group hosted by John Holland Construction Contractors.

The day starts at 10am with an entry fee of $40 per team player including lunch. A charity auction will be held at the end of the day. Items include various sports memorabilia.
