Rock of Ages, the latest Parkes M & D production, is set to be one of the most fun and high energy shows so far!

Director, Greg Ballantyne, is thrilled with the way the show has come together. “I started out directing at the M&D ten years ago with an 80s show that I wrote myself called Groovy Moves, and then followed that up with The Wedding Singer. “Rock of Ages definitely has the same vibe as those shows,” Greg said.

It features a mix of new, young talent and familiar faces. Greg is appearing as the off-

beat narrator and guitarist Lonny, while the lead roles are filled by teenagers Matt Prow and Shannon Green. “Matt and Shannon are just unbelievable in this show”, said Greg. “At times you forget that they’re just kids, they are so professional.”

Dooley Thomson stars as legendary singer Stacee Jaxx, while Harrison Baker returns as washed-up rocker Dennis Dupree.

Georgia Goodrick, Piper Hennock, Erin O’Leary and Kiira Christensen turn in great performances along with Christie Green, Andrew Francis and Hannah Tanswell.

The original musical inspired the hit film Rock of Ages starring Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin.

They then asked neighbours and relatives to come to their open garden charging a gold coin entry fee. Construction on NBN begins: More than 5,700 homes and businesses in Parkes will soon have access to the National Broadband Network (nbn™).

Crews have arrived in town to start work on the nbn™. Parkes Shire Mayor Councillor Ken Keith OAM said this was an exciting time for the region. “Parkes will soon transition into the digital future, bringing greater opportunities for residents and businesses to maximise their potential.”

More than 650 residents and businesses in the southern area of Parkes are already able to connect to the nbn™ through the fixed wireless technology.

Red Cross Tea Rooms: The Parkes Red Cross tea rooms reopened last Friday for its traditional morning and afternoon teas.

The Red Cross Emergency Services teams are working in Forbes and Condobolin at the evacuation centres, and money taken at the tea rooms assists to finance this service - your support is most gratefully received. The tea room will be open every Friday from 11am to 3pm until the Christmas recess.

Under new leadership the Parkes branch meeting date has been changed to the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 2pm. The next meeting is on Tuesday, 18th October in the Parkes Red Cross rooms in Church Street.

Red Cross is the world’s largest humanitarian organisation.

Canowindra Baroquefest 14th – 16th October: Four concerts celebrating the music of the great composers brought to Canowindra by internationally renowned performers. The schools program starts on Friday, 14th October and will present an introduction to string instruments and concert performance to 170 children over three sessions.

The official opening is at 5:30pm and at 7.30 pm Camerata Antica presents a concert of English baroque on old instruments.

Dedication And Talent Creates Success Former Parkes resident Douglas Keith has shown he’s a chip off the old block, carving out success early in his career. The son of Sue and Ken Keith is the recent recipient of two awards for his craftsmanship in fine furniture making.

Douglas moved from the family home in Parkes all the way to Tharwa, an historic village outside of Canberra, in order to pursue his passion for making fine timber furniture.

He was fortunate enough to secure a fouryear apprenticeship with well-respected furniture designer Myles Gostelow. Myles is a master-craftsman specialising in creating beautiful yet functional furniture from Australian hardwood. Myles has had work commissioned by the ACT government and various private clients. His pieces range from chapel furniture, to presentation boxes, to artfully crafted walking sticks.

Douglas is currently in the third year of his apprenticeship with Myles, and was recently

named the 2016 NSW/ACT Apprentice of the Year by the Furnishing Industry Association of Australia (FIAA). Aside from the accolades, the Apprentice of the Year is also awarded a $500 cash prize.

The apprentices had to provide an example of their recent work as part for the judging process. Douglas submitted a bedside cabinet he had handcrafted from Tasmanian Blackwood and celery top pine. The cabinet had a smoothly curved door and drawer front, and was made with hand-cut dovetails and mortise and tenons. Recognising his talent, FIAA stated that Douglas demonstrated exceptional skills and that his knowledge of his trade and his commitment for woodwork is clearly evident throughout his project.

Not long after his first win Douglas scored another victory, and was named a recipient of the 2016 John Tiddy Memorial Award.

Australian Woodworking Industry Suppliers Association (AWISA) Exhibition, which was held in Melbourne in July. The prize included an all-expenses paid trip to the exhibition, plus $2,000 towards his training course fees.

RURAL ROUNDUP Southern Star Rural Bull Achieves Top Price A senepol bull of the Southern Star Rural Senepol stud at Canowindra achieved a top price of $12,000 at the 14th annual 5 Star Senepol and African Hybrid Bull Sale held at Rockhampton recently. Clayton and Sarah Maynard own Southern Star. Their bull was sold to the Goodard family from Bollon, Queensland.

With 81 lots auctioned, the sale grossed a total of $545,000 with an average of $7,569 and the top lot going for $16,000. Buyers came from Queensland and northern NSW. What sets these bulls apart from other Senepol bulls is that they are selected from over 500 male progeny. Selection is done whilst running on ticky forest country at Mt. Eugene, Jambin and Belmont Research Station, Rockhampton.

They have to perform on grass, adapting to heat, ticks, flies and Lantana, with minimal chemical treatment. Geoff Maynard, stud principal for 5 Star Senepol, said there had not been a better time for the cattle industry with record prices throughout the country.

Clayton and Sarah also produce Senegus Bulls (Senepol Angus cross) which were all sold at the auction for an average of $6,000.

The Senegus bulls are small birth weight and suited to heifer matings. They also have many more variables that affect ease of calving, namely gestation, length, muscle pattern, and nutrition especially in the third trimester.

We are a month into Spring but are yet to see a break in the weather. This has lead to a slow start to property sales, as it is too wet to get onto most prospective properties. This gives us time to look at the options of auction or private treaty. In many cases there are neighbours or parties that might be interested, but it is also important to advertise the sale of your largest asset, in many cases.

These days there are many different options, from traditional newspaper to varied online advertising. Your agent will know which is best for your property. With values where they are, advertising is a small marketing cost that could bring large returns.

We are constantly receiving enquiries from outside our local area, showing how much demand there is for property from Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.

An auction may come with a definite end day, depending on whether the property sells. Auctions come with a higher advertising cost due to the need to push your property onto prospective buyers. It must also be noted that all properties are not right for auction. If your property has been on the market for a while to turn around and put it up for auction isn’t necessarily going to bring buyers out. It may be better to consider where you are advertising or how you are promoting the property’s assets.

Private treaty combined with the right marketing is a good option with rural property due to the many varied considerations, for example the inclusion of crop, sale of livestock, organisation of clearing sales and walk-in, walk-out options.

It is easy to say that commission is a cost,

as is advertising, but remember this is the sale of your largest and in many cases your final asset. It costs nothing to talk to us and discuss your options.

Our livestock markets have been heavily affected by the weather in recent weeks with numbers varying as roads opened and closed.

The sucker market has been solid until last week when we saw numbers increase and prices fall to between $5.50/kg/dw to $6.00/kg/dw. The weather has meant that many lambs booked in direct have been unable to be delivered and are waiting on farms for a break in the weather. Old sheep have remained strong on minimal supply.

The cattle market has seen feeder steers and heifers fall slightly while cows and heavy cattle remain very solid. We need to consider what numbers are out there waiting to hit the market. Our markets are still very good and even with corrections will still remain solid.

Ostini Wool Weekly Market Update Further strength in the finer microns was somewhat overshadowed last week by weakness in the broader types. 19.5-microns was the pivot point with finer microns gaining 20 to 40 cents whilst the broader microns fell 20 cents.

Over the past month the finer microns have firmed slightly whilst 21 to 23-microns have lost ground, resulting in the Northern Region 19 – 21 micron price differential jumping from 25 cents in early August to 134 cents this week. Thursday provided a strong finish to the week, with all fleece categories closing in front. Lots with a low CVH found good support attracting significant premiums to the rest of the market. The skirting market followed a similar trend with finer microns holding up reasonably well. While the medium to broader microns were generally 10 to 20 cents cheaper.

Crossbreds were reasonably limited in supply but managed to post increases for the broader microns, while the finer end eased. Oddments also firmed slightly on a limited selection.

Peak Hill Strikes Gold On 50 Best Small Towns List

Peak Hill has been named one of Australia’s 50 Top Best Small Towns.

The town with a heart of gold, 49km north of Parkes, made it to the list after a monthlong contest run by the online travel agency, Discount My Flights, to find the most irresistible, exotic, historic and postcard-worthy small towns in the country.

“It’s a great honour to have Peak Hill recognised as one of the best small towns in the nation,” said Parkes Shire Mayor, Councillor Ken Keith.

“Peak Hill is a hidden gem, founded upon a rich history of gold mining. Now that the secret is out, we are proud to share Peak Hill with the rest of Australia,” said the Mayor.

“It is not a surprise Peak Hill was selected.”

With gold first discovered in 1889, it still attracts visitors to the town with the Gold Mine Open Cut Experience topping the list of must see attractions.

Residents were very excited about the inclusion on the list saying it would give their town positive publicity.

The town, with a population of around 1,400, also offers many other tourist attractions such as a unique nature walk, the Bogan Weir, Australia’s first upright wheat silo, heritage listed hospital, arts and crafts, the Big Fish Fossil hut, and a unique street facade which takes you back in time.

The first public wheat silo built in Australia was constructed at Peak Hill in 1918 after government surveys found the district had great potential as a wheat producing region.

The winning towns gain promotion through various media channels and a coveted badge for their website.

Central NSW was well represented in the top 50, with Orange, Lithgow, Blayney, Dubbo and Narromine also making the list.

Country Music Awards Hit The Right Note Pete Armstrong of Blackheath won the talent quest of the 49th 2PK Parkes Central West Country Music Awards held last weekend. Pete won seven first places, senior overall prize, as well as the overall prize of recording time at the Flying Fox recording Studio. Mikayla Markham was the Junior overall winner taking out many other prizes as well.

The talent quest had an amazing response with 171 entries that was reduced to around 130 because of the flood situation.

The Footloose Band received rave reviews from the audience and contestants as well as from the committee. Other Parkes contestants who won prizes were Lily Crocker who won the Junior Overall Encouragement Award and Kaitlin Finn who came second in both the Senior Female Vocal category and Senior Gospel category.

How long have you lived in Parkes? I was born and grew up in Parkes, leaving in 1994. After time in Dubbo and Sydney I returned to Parkes in 2006.

Where do you work? At Parkes Shire Council, managing cultural, education and library services.

What do you enjoy most about your work? Being able to make a difference in the community. It is very rewarding delivering storytelling, art workshops, exhibitions, providing book clubs, a writers group, author visits, programs for young and old.

Offering opportunities for inspiration is important to me.

What do you do in your spare time? I enjoy gardening, cycling, mosaic creating, travelling and of course reading!

How do you like your coffee? Flat white with two sugars.

What makes your day? Being a librarian first and foremost, it is recommending a new author or book to a person and them letting me know they really enjoyed it.

What is your favourite food? I had steamed mussels in an Asian broth travelling once. I dream about going back.

If you could go anywhere in the world on holiday, where would it be? Ethiopia, to trek in the mountains and visit some of the oldest historical sites in the world.

Attention Purchasers Of Land The Office of State Revenue has put more red tape in place from 21st June for residential land purchases. The reason for the new rules is to identify transfers to foreign nationals so governments may impose additional duties and taxes on foreigners.

Foreign nationals will have to pay 4% extra on normal stamp duty applying to residential land. Land tax surcharge on foreign nationals also applies at .075% of the value of the land and there is no threshold.

It also seems that land tax (which is levied annually) may also be payable by existing residential lands held by foreign nationals.

Exemptions apply to Australian citizens, some New Zealand citizens and foreign nationals who have resided in Australia for 200 days or more in the last 12 months provided they complete an eight-page form.

The Purchaser Declaration form needs to be completed on entering a contract for the purchase of residential land so as to obtain an exemption from these duties and taxes. Australian citizens will need to provide a copy of an Australian birth certificate or passport or citizenship certificate. Kiwis will require their passport and a special category visa and long term foreign nationals will need to provide evidence of their residing in Australia for 200 days or more.

Corporations will need a lot more paper work to obtain an exemption or partial exemption.

All in all, the bureaucrats are putting more obstacles in front of purchasers of land and you need to be guided through this maze by your solicitor.

Minor Show A Major Sight To Behold Parkes was treated to a sight last Saturday, when 37 classic Morris Minors drove into town for the inaugural Morris Minor Owners’ National Show and Shine.

And just by looking at the cars on display it’s easy to see why so many people catch the Morris Minor bug. Not only does their retro styling stand out in a crowd, they can be easily updated with modern components, such as Toyota or Datsun engines and running gear. And despite their glamorous exterior, the vehicles are relatively affordable, with an average refurbished car costing from around $5,000 to $10,000.

a few miles to their odometers to make it to the showground, with cars driving from as far away as Perth, South Australia, and Queensland, although the majority travelled up from Victoria and New South Wales, with a few racing over from Sydney.

Darren Goff, owner of Minor Magic, an online Morris parts specialist, says the idea of the festival was to be as welcoming and inclusive as possible. Darren, who made the drive from Wingello, near Goulburn, said they wanted to host the show in a country town as a way to support local businesses and raise money for local charities.

Parkes was selected as the lucky location for the very first show due to our relatively central location, which is usually easily accessible. Unfortunately, the surrounding floods and road closures made the trip a little more challenging for some, and a few car enthusiasts opted to steer clear entirely.

Still, the organisers were thrilled to be able to donate $465 to local charity CanAssist, with the Rural Fire Service providing a sausage sizzle. The show will be held biennially, with the next show revving up to Temora in 2018.

CR KENNY MCGRATH

Cr Kenny McGrath has served on our Council since 1992. The born-and-bred Parkes resident operates a successful landscaping and earthmoving business and brings his pragmatic approach to council, particularly in the areas of roads, subdivisions and waste facilities. Among other improvements, he would like to see a few more roundabouts to help the traffic flow around town.

Cr McGrath’s other key focus is on youth.

He has had a strong involvement with the Parkes PCYC since its establishment, and was a key instigator for the Parkes Skate Park. As a father of eight, Cr McGrath understands that team sports and extracurricular activities can be expensive; particularly for those with larger families. He thinks youth-focussed facilities are important. Cr McGrath also has a long history with the Elvis Festival, and is involved in The Parkes & District Country Music Association.

CR GEORGE PRATT

Cr George Pratt is embarking on his 4th term on Council. He first stood for Council in 2004 following his retirement from a 30-year career with the Ambulance Service. His early years with the ‘ambos’ took him to Sydney and the Riverina before his transfer back to Parkes where he was Officer in Charge.

It’s no wonder Cr Pratt has such a strong interest in road safety. Cr Pratt would like to see the Parkes bypass built. Keeping heavy vehicles out of town would ease congestion, and make access easier for visitors with caravans. Cr Pratt extends his safety concerns to the elderly citizens who use mobility scooters, and has run safety workshops in nursing homes. Cr Pratt is also involved with the Men’s Shed, which he says is a great asset for the town, and is restoring his Valiant Charger.

Second Year 12 Class Graduates At Christian School

40th Anniversary For Antique Bike Rally

The Parkes Antique Bike Rally, first started in 1977, celebrated its 40th anniversary over the long weekend. A special commemorative medallion was made featuring Brian Coote’s 1914 Douglas, as he was one of the instigators of the rally.

Only one entrant, Don Liddle, a former president of the Veteran & Vintage Motorcycle Club based in the Sydney region, has been to all the rallies. According to Bob Steel, organiser and founder of the event, most of the original entrants have either passed on or are unable to ride. The number of entrants was also reduced to 31 this year because of the closure of the Newell Highway. Parkes locals who took part were John Frogley, Rex Veal, Brian Gray, Scott Mill, Ray Johnston and Bob Steel. Ray

The last day of term 3 was also the last day for the second Year 12 class to graduate at Parkes Christian School.

The graduating class received their final reports and prizes at the Founders’ Service held on Friday night. Bethany Magill won the Dux Award for Year 12. She also won the Long Tan Youth Award for Leadership and the Caltex All-Rounder Award. The Rueben F Scarf Award for Commitment to Learning was presented to Kaitlyn Strudwick.

Rachel Thorncroft and James Simpson were announced as the School Captains for 2017. They will head up the newly formed Student Representative Council from the start of term 4.

Johnson on his 1960 BSA came first in the Post war 1945 – 60 category.

The Saturday run took them to The Dish, and on Sunday they went to Eugowra, Cudal and then Molong.

Dry Weather Good For Golf We finally had a dry weekend that allowed members of the Parkes Golf Club to shed the cobwebs off their golf clubs and prepare for some competition golf.

The men contested an 18 hole 2 Man Team Stableford last Saturday for trophies put up by members Michael Craft and Peter Dixon. Holes 1 to 6 were played as a Best Ball, holes 7 to 12 as Aggregate and the final 6 holes as a Mutliplier. The last 6 holes proved crucial as Michael Dellaca and Scott Mann edged out Matthew Swetland and Rod Kiley on a countback after both pairs returned excellent scores of 61.

In the Individual event it was plain sailing for Shen Taranto who recorded the day’s best nett score of 39 points.

Ball Winners on the day went to 61 Matt Swetland and Rod Kiley, 58 Mitch McGlashan and Cameron Butler, 53 Neil and Cameron McMillan and on 52 were Marty Woods and Max Haley.

Only a small contingent of ladies contested an 18 Hole Stableford round for the Cherrie Phillips trophy. Junior Kasey FayRice spread-eagled the field with a convincing 7 point victory as she returned a great 35 points.

Ball winners went to Margaret Hogan on 28 points and Kaye Jones with 27.

The first round of the Dixon Physiotherapy 36 Hole Members Club Foursomes Championships will be played on Sunday.
