Olympic fever returned to Parkes last weekend when local Hockeyroo star Mariah Williams came home.

She visited schools, handed out many autographs, took countless photos, and also became the very first recipient of a Star of Parkes Shire at a civic reception held in her honour.

“This evening we recognise excellence in sport at an international level. Mariah is just that, a sports star,” said Ken Keith, interim Mayor.

“Tonight we present the first Star of Parkes Shire, a star in the Orion Belt that can be seen in the night sky in the Southern Hemisphere. And as of today, named after this sports star, Mariah Williams.”

Ken said The Star of Parkes was a symbolic honour, inspired by the tradition of pre-

senting the Key to the City. “The Stars are reflective of the Parkes Shire - our starry skies, the iconic CSIRO Radio Telescope and our shining future.

“We are proud of you and the wonderful ambassador you have been for Parkes Shire and for Australia in the 2016 Olympic Games.”

Mariah said she was proud to call Parkes home and thanked everybody who have given her so much love and support in her journey to Rio. She said playing for Australia had been a childhood dream since Year 3. “It is hard to describe the feeling when I first ran onto the Olympic field in Rio. I had this burning sensation all over my body. It was unreal!”

Three New Faces On Council Councillor Ken Keith had the mayoral chain hung around his neck once again when he was re-elected uncontested at the Council meeting on Tuesday.

The position of Deputy Mayor also remained in the hands of Barbara Newton.

As for the rest of the newly elected Council, announced last Friday, three new faces had made the cut. They are Neil Westcott, Wally Biles and Bill Jayet.

The ten councillors in order of the position they were elected starting at number one are Ken Keith, Louise O’Leary (Ind), Neil Westcott (Ind), Kenny McGrath (Ind), Wally Biles, Barbara Newton, George Pratt, Bill Jayet, Alan Ward and Patrica Smith.

Mayor Ken Keith said he it was great to have diversity and a new variety of inspirational and enthusiastic Councillors. “I look forward to serving the next term.”

Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected: At the Parkes Shire Council Meeting on Tuesday Cr Ken Keith was re-elected as Mayor of Parkes uncontested to serve another twoyear term. He made special thanks to his wife Sue, and his brother for their support. Cr Barbara Newtown was re-elected as Deputy Mayor of Parkes. She won 7-2 votes against Cr Alan Ward. She thanked her husband for his continued support.

Parkes High School Reunion: Almost 100 Parkes High School alumni and their partners will be attending the reunion this weekend to celebrate 40 years since leaving school. The former students attended the PHS between 1973 (Yr 7), 1976 (Yr 10 – 40 yrs) and 1978 (Yr 12). The reunion is organised by Marcelle Armstrong, Nerrida Barber, Rodney and Jenny Barnes, Kym Hodges, Debbie Miles and Doug Miller.

Social drinks and an informal get together will take place from 7:30pm tonight at the Royal Hotel. The main function will be held at the Parkes Sportman’s (Town Bowling) Club from 5:00pm tomorrow. A roll call will occur at 6:00 pm. There will be a memorabilia display with photos, old school uniforms and music from the 70s and 80s.

Meet Mariah: Olympian Mariah Williams spent Saturday at the Parkes Hockey grand finals where she was mobbed by young hockey fans keen to get close to their favourite Hockeyroo. Her inspirational message was that hard work would overcome doubts – just as she has overcome four knee surgeries to realise her Olympic dream.

More than 40 families and carers of people with disabilities, as well as local service providers, attended a session on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Forbes last week in preparation for its roll-out in the Central West in July next year.

The NDIS is a ground-breaking change to the way disability services are funded and delivered. “It is the largest social reform since the introduction of Medicare,” said presenter Helen Riordan, Community Engagement Manager for the NDIS. Little Learners House With No Steps (HSNW) Early Intervention invited Helen to give community members from Parkes, Forbes, Condobolin and Dubbo an opportunity to learn more about the NDIS. Helen said the NDIS would replace all state-based funded disability schemes with an increase of funding from $8 billion to $22 billion per year.

“People will have a lot more control as it is very flexible with more choice and control

over who you choose to provide support,” said Helen.

She added the old scheme was crisis driven, while the NDIS put supports in place to not get to a crisis. “The aim is to help people to live a regular life.”

Leanne Allegri, Area Manager for Western NSW for HWNS, said funding would be allocated on an individual basis.

After you’ve checked if you are eligible for individual support from the NDIS, the first step is to start planning. “One of the most important steps”, Helen said, “was to prepare very well for the planning meeting in order to get the best plan.”

Once you have a plan in place and have chosen supports, you can choose how your funds are managed with an option for self-managing. Support will be given throughout life.

The Parkes Chamber of Commerce welcomed their new Executive Committee at their Annual General Meeting last week.

Geoff Rice, of Langlands Hanlon, will continue as President, with John Kennedy, of K&H Geotechnical Services, returning as Vice President. Local business owner Belinda McCorkell retains the Secretary role for another term. Wilbur Harris, manager of Parkes Mensland, will serve as a Publicity Officer, and is joined by Peter Martin who replaces Michael Oakley. Susie Hill is welcomed to the role of Treasure, replacing the outgoing Gregor Sammut-Paul.

Peter Martin is a Partner at Matthews Williams Solicitors and Conveyancing, and practices in Parkes and Condoblin. Susie Hill is the Chief Radiographer and Practice Manager at Parkes Diagnostic Imaging, and also runs a cattle farm with her husband.

The Parkes Chamber of Commerce is an organisation of local business people who promote the growth and prosperity of the Parkes business sector. The immediate focus for the new-look executive committee is the fast-approaching Christmas period. The SPARKLES initiative is a festive campaign by the Parkes Shire Council and the Parkes Chamber of Commerce to encourage residents to shop local. SPARKLES focusses on providing opportunities to support local businesses through a series of vibrant community events.

Make Most The Most Of Your Garden This Spring Although the weather has been a little less than glorious lately, gardeners mustn’t forget that Spring is the time to make the most of your garden. Greenparkes Garden Centre is getting new stock in every week to get your garden ready for summer.

Jenny Jewell said that advanced and semi-advanced screening plants are popular right now, as the instant impact they provide means no waiting for a result. “Every week we are getting in bulk quantities of screening plants in big sizes, including natives and others,” Jenny said.

Spring is the best time to get these plants in to the ground, and planting between showers means that there’s less work in watering during establishment.

During the ongoing wet weather, Jenny recommends a few simple tricks to help your garden thrive. “If you haven’t already, don’t forget feeding and fertilising for Spring,” Jenny said. “And weeding often will give your plants the best chance.”

Another tip is to move mulch away from the stems of your plants to prevent waterlogging and potential fungus growth in the wet. “Now is a good chance to plan for the next time it rains as well. Have a look at the way the water flows in your garden, and consider if you can do some channelling or contouring for better draining to protect both the garden and your house,” Jenny said.

Are We Alone In the Universe?

In ten days’ time the Parkes Radio Telescope will officially start work on the $100 million Breakthrough Listen project in search of intelligent life beyond Earth.

Three members of the Breakthrough team at the University of California Berkely were in Parkes recently to install hardware for the official start on 4th October.

David MacMahon, Daniel Price and Matt Lebofksy spent a week in Parkes to get the telescope ready. David said their main task was to increase the bandwidth.

They are very excited being involved in the most comprehensive scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence. “We will find nothing or we will find a lot,” said Daniel, who is an Australian on the team. He said data from the NASA Kepler mission has shown that our Milky Way Galaxy contained tens of billions of Earth-size planets at lukewarm temperatures, any of which might harbor life.

David said he was super excited as the project had more dedicated telescope time and bandwidth. He said every day on the project was equal to all previous searches put together.

Matt has been working on SETI projects at Berkely for more than 20 years, but felt this was the first well-funded project giving them control of the telescopes. “These are

exciting times and the project is very interesting.”

The 64m dish in Parkes is one of two of the world’s largest telescopes to be contracted for the 10-year, multi-disciplinary search. The 100m Robert C Byrd Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia has been in operations since January with hundreds of observations already made.

While Green Bank is being used for searches in the Northern Hemisphere, the Parkes telescope will undertake broad searches of large areas of sky, as well as stars within 16 light years accessible only from the Southern Hemisphere, such as Alpha Centauri.

According to the Breakthrough Initiatives website, observations made so far include most of the stars within 16 light years of Earth (including stars such as 51 Pegasi that are known to host extra-solar planets), and a sample of stars between 16 and 160 light years away. The search also targeted around 40 of the nearest spiral galaxies.

According to Pete Worden, chairman of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, the program will generate vast amounts of data, all of which will be open to the public and could constitute the largest amount of scientific data ever made available.

My House My Home Waiting For The Stork I think the process of being pregnant and waiting to embark on the biggest journey of your life, is one of the most amazing experiences.

Local ABC radio presenter Andrew Dunkley traded his microphone for a pen, and is the author of the war novel All I See Is Mud, which launched in Dubbo last Saturday.

It is a moving story about the harsh realities of trench warfare that was inspired by his grandfather, Stanley Dunkey. The story follows Stan from basic training in Sydney through the horrors of the Western Front when he was just a 16 year-old boy.

The project was inspired from a letter his grandfather had written from the frontline, in which he urged his mate not to sign up for duty. It was a discovery that piqued his interest. Andrew had remembered his grandfather as a gentle soul, and Stan’s experiences in the Great War were almost incomprehensible.

A century later, the ripple effects of that conflict are still felt today. Andrew observes that the First World War literally redrew the map of Europe, changing the world forever.

Andrew’s research took him through the war memorial archives as well as his grandfather’s letters and diary notes, but despite having a wealth of historical documents to draw on, Andrew opted to construct a fictionalised story. Andrew says that although it is based on real events he was reluctant to use real soldiers in his work out of respect

for them and their relatives.

The book has had an unusual development process. Andrew embarked on the research as a family history project, which he never intended to publish. But what initially started out as a short story, rapidly expanded to become a substantial manu-

script. As he was working in radio, he was able to record and broadcast the audio in parts. Following its successful reception, it was then released as an audio CD in 2013, before it finally made its way into print.

With the average Australian man set to live to 79 and the average Australian woman typically expected to live until 84 , it’s likely you can expect many years of relaxation ahead. When we’re retiring Some people will choose to keep working, at least part-time, beyond retirement age.

But most hope to leave the workforce altogether. In the last five years, the retire-

ment age was between 61 and 63, with women tending to retire just shy of their 60th birthday.

If you’re hoping to retire before 65, you need to plan ahead. By 2023, the Government will gradually have increased the pension age to 67. And with 75% of Australians over 65 relying on a full or part pension to get by , that could affect your ability to retire as early as you’d like.

The great super shortfall Many Australians predict they won’t have enough for a comfortable retirement — estimated to be about $57,665 a year for a couple . According to recent research by MLC, about one third of Australians think they’ll fall significantly short of this target, with another 25% expect to fall at least somewhat short of it.

Take control of your super There’s plenty you can do to boost your retirement savings. Use a calculator to

estimate the amount you’ll need to support your ideal retirement lifestyle. If you discover you’re not saving enough, you can consider implementing some of the following strategies (if you are eligible): • Salary sacrifice: contribute regularly to your super from your pre-tax salary.

• Personal contributions: put a bonus or tax refund to work by adding it to your super savings, or simply top up your super with a regular payment from your after-tax income.

• Transition to retirement: if you’re over 55 and planning to cut your working hours, a transition to retirement strategy could help you maintain your after-tax income and boost your super at the same time.

But remember, there are caps on the amounts you can put into super each year, so you need to do your homework before you invest.

YOU CAN HELP THE PARKES AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY BEAT CANCER Parkes & District Relay for Life which is being held on the 22nd - 23rd October at Northparkes Oval is looking for support and sponsorship for their annual relay. This is a great opportunity for businesses as it gives enormous exposure for the right cause and their affiliation is with fundraising, the community and fighting cancer. One of the options available is the in-kind donation which could be for example a $500 gift card for a local business that will then receive exposure as a Bronze Supporter.

In November 2014, 376 locals joined in and proudly raised a grand total of $440,557 to help the fight against cancer. This year the organisers are expecting in excess of 450 participants and they will be aiming to raise $60,000 to fund vital cancer research, and support and prevention programs. There will be some great entertainment, games and activities, awesome prizes and fabulous food on offer.

Parkes Potters Exhibit The Parkes Potters Group opened an exhibition called Earthly Visions in Molong on Sunday.

The exhibition showcases the wide variety of the members’ styles and influences.

Each potter comes from a diverse background. They bring these experiences to their work, enabling them to challenge the bounds of the clay and to produce interesting original art pieces. Some of the pieces incorporate found objects and multi media.

Parkes Pottery Group have been in existence for over 40 years and has 14 members at the moment. Members who are exhibiting in the show are Sally Armstrong, Pol Cruz, Mavis Harrison, Elsie Mahon, Jocelyn Moles, Nola Reeves, Sue Smeaton and Bev Rowe.

The exhibition runs until 16th October.

If you could go anywhere in the world on holiday, where would it be? I’m a bit of a vintage lover, so I’m really looking forward to going to Dapper Day at Disneyland for my 40th – it’s all 40s, 50s and 60s themed, I’m really looking forward to that.

Camera Club Champions Of Print The Parkes Camera Club has won the interclub print section of the Western District Association of Camera Clubs (WDACC) annual competition recently.

While the Parkes Camera Club aimed to win the digital section for a fourth year in a row, President of the club, Steve Ostini, said it was fantastic to have won the print section. “We have not won that for a long time.”

Parkes came third in the digital section with 123 points, while Bathurst Camera Club won it with 126 points. Parkes won the first place for the print section with 127 points.

Individual club members also won prizes,

with Maree Tanswell getting second place in the novice digital section and Joanne Strom won second place in the open digital section.

Another three individual members received merit awards: Frances Thornton for print nature, Steve Ostini for open print colour and open print people, and Joanne Strom in the nature digital section.

The Dubbo Camera Club hosted the competition this year with about ten clubs participating. The clubs came from Parkes, Bathurst, Mudgee, Dubbo, Orange, Young, Grenfell, Narromine and Harden. Steve said Parkes would host the competition in 2019 on the 60th anniversary of the club.

The Rovers Black team got some pre-game advice and ran some drills with Mariah. They went on to win their grand final 3-0.

Stephen Davies was Parkes’ first hockey Olympian. Both he and Mariah went to Middleton Public School. Stephen was Mariah’s team’s assistant coach at the recent Olympic Games. His parents, John and Brenda, attended the civic reception for Mariah on Friday.

Free Cuppa For The Driver Organisers of the award-winning ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme are inviting local businesses to register for phase seven of the successful driver fatigue awareness campaign which will operate from lst March to 31st May 2017. The scheme encourages visiting drivers to stop at participating businesses for a free cup of tea or coffee so that they can take a break from driving long distances.

The scheme is seen as a win for road safety as drivers take a rest break and a win for local towns and businesses who attract more visitors and customers. It is a

partnership between participating Councils and local businesses, with the local Councils providing the marketing and resources whilst the businesses provide the free tea and/or coffee. Last year participating businesses saw a 30% increase in sales as drivers usually purchase something else with their free cuppa.

Customers can access special offers at local attractions, shopping outlets, accommodation and cafes, by simply downloading a Colour Pass from www.visitparkes. com.au.

Parkes Shire Council Brand and Marketing Manager Katrina Dwyer said: “The Colour Parkes campaign highlights the colourful events, experiences and iconic attractions within the Parkes Shire to drive visitation and spend to local operators.

“The campaign will run for the whole length of spring, and will be directed at visitors within a four hour driving radius, specifically the Canberra region as an emerging market,” she said.

The promotion will be supported by a tactical marketing program incorporating a television campaign on Prime 7, print and digital media, billboard signage, shopping centre advertising placement and attendance at major consumer trade shows in Canberra.

New Dragon Boats To Grace Lake Forbes

Very early one Sunday morning the calm waters of Lake Forbes were high and shrouded with light fog. At the water’s edge there was suddenly movement.

Seven eager members of the Forbes Dragon Boat Club were waiting for a truck to turn the corner… a truck carrying two long-awaited, new racing dragon boats.

Past president, Bill Thomas, and past Treasurer, Claire Davis, were among the eager onlookers to witness the Forbes Dragon Boat Club change from its almost three decades old boats to much lighter, sleeker, modern racing boats.

As the truck rumbled into sight, a buzz went through the little group and cameras began clicking. The boats were unloaded with great enthusiasm and carefully set in their new home.

Many delighted phrases rang out like: “Wow! We have foot-rests.”, “They have handles! We can move them so much easier!” and “They’re so much lighter.”

The club is ready for the next paddling session and can hardly wait to get them in the water.

“The boats have come about due to the hard work of our previous board and we thank them once again, especially Bill and Claire,” said President Robyn Stephens.

The club is set to go from strength to strength with a very committed new board: Robyn Stephens, president; Tony Fisher, vice-president; Michael Green, treasurer; Kristine Dobell, registrar; Chris Sweeney, publicity officer; Ian Prince, works co-ordinator; Neil Stephens, board member and Warren Edwards, secretary.

It’s unlikely that there’s another person in the world with the job description of grader operator and Elvis On Call.

Parkes Shire Council employee Al Gersbach is just that though – a grader operator by day and ready to suit up as Council’s Elvis for the last 10 whenever he is needed.

It started small – Al was called on for promotional photos in the lead up to the Elvis Festival. He then donned the suit and roamed the streets greeting festival-goers.

“I’m usually walking around town, talking to people, having photos taken, being Elvis at events,” Al said.

“I usually have an off-sider as well, there’s been a few different guys to help me out over the years.”

The festival itself is a big commitment for Al. “It used to be just Friday, Saturday, Sunday, but now it’s just about Monday to Monday, day and night,” he said.

Al is now wearing his third Elvis jumpsuit, upgrading in quality each time.

“I buy all the gear myself: the jumpsuit, the shoes, the wig and glasses,” Al said. “It sets me back a bit, but I don’t mind.”

With all the time spent talking to visitors and locals alike, Al has a good idea of what brings people to Parkes for the Elvis Festival.

“It’s Elvis’ music, his moves, he was a legend and an icon,” Al said.

“People come here because they can have safe and fabulous fun, regardless of their age.”

The build-up to next year’s 25th anniversary festival has already started with tickets for various events on sale.

Betland Triumphs In Parkes Open

Forbes golfer Steve Betland joined his brother John to become the only brothers to record victories in the SCT Logistics Parkes Open Golf Tournament.

The event on Sunday was curtailed to an 18-hole endurance test as players battled soggy fairways and consistent rain and a cold northerly breeze.

In his first SCT Parkes Open victory, Betland fired a great 2 under par round of 69 to record a one shot victory over tournament favourite Mark Hale from Mudgee. Steve’s brother, John won the title in 2011.

In the handicap section Duntryleague’s James Conran fired a great par round of 71 for a 72 nett to finish 1 shot ahead of Lee Grierson of Forbes.

The best of the local contingent in the Championship Scratch event was Justin Sutton with a solid 3 over par 74, 1 shot ahead of Mitch McGlashan, while multiple winner Duntryleague returned a 76, John Betland had a 75 and Mudgee Champion Andrew Best recorded a solid 74 as did the Australian’s James Brownlow.

In the Harvey Norman B Grade, Neil McMillan of Forbes finished 12 over Par after a 83 to edge out John Murphy and local Phil Bishop.

Despite losing the runner-up position in the scratch event, Bishop with his 74 nett proved too good in the Handicap section to edge out Richard Hutchison of Parkes by

one shot. In the Network Video C Grade the Coast’s Dominic Romeo blitzed the field for a comfortable 8 shot victory as he fired a superb 14 over Par round of 85. Runner-up to Romeo was former Parkes resident Mick O’Malley from the Federal Golf Club in Canberra, while Ron Hetherington of Parkes returned an excellent 71 nett to be 4 shots ahead of another local Greg Powter as they made it a quinella for the Parkes club in the handicap section.

The winner of the John “Gidgie” Leister Memorial Trophy was Dominic Romeo, while the Keith Clark Memorial Trophy for the best Scratch score of the day in the Veterans Section sponsored by the Asquith Golf Ckub went to Duntryleague’s Robert Payne. Phil Bishop with a 74 nett took home the Ken Keith OAM Veterans handicap award.

Saturday’s prelude event the Atlas Copco Australia Open 4BBB Stableford Scratch & Handicap saw a field of 180 players contest the event. Scratch victors John and Steve Betland returned a great 7 under Par round of 64 for 43 Stableford points to record a solid and convincing 4 shot win over the Robert Payne and Robert Parfett form Orange Club Duntryleague.

Former local junior and member of the Woolooware Golf Club in Sydney, Kyle Bell teamed with local Parkes member Jake Hodge in recording a magnificent 47 points

C grade women: Cellar Crows 3 (Lyndall Matthews, Annette Orr, Toni Speakman) def Middleton Maroon 0. Player of the Match: Michelle Yeo. Crows were the favourites from the outset, and unfortunately Maroon weren’t able to repeat last week’s goal scoring form.

B grade women: Rovers Black 3 (Cass Ward, Mandy Westcott, Ash Ward) def Middleton Pink 0. Player of the Match: Ash Ward. Black has been one of the strongest teams all year, and never looked in doubt against a Pink team that couldn’t quite string it together.

B grade men: Magpies White 2 (Jayden Pusterla 2) def Magpies Academy 1 (Steve Redfern). Player of the Match: Jayden Pusterla. Academy won the early spot in the grand final and were favourites over White, but it was an intense game that needed golden goal extra time.

A grade women: Magpies 5 (Paige Hay, Stacey Ross, Wendy Rix, Cherie Johnstone) def Cellar Crows 2 (Lyndall Matthews, Merryn Unger). Player of the Match: Wendy Rix. Magpies have been the powerhouse this year, and dominated all over.

A grade men: Magpies 15 (Laurie Wakefield 4, Jack Elliott 3, Peter Amor 3, Regan Hotham 2, Nathan Munday 2, Jayden Pusterla) def Star Budgies 2 (Miles Smith, Ben Townsend). Player of the Match: Laurie Wakefield. Budgies gave it their all, but there was just no stopping Magpies with a whopping 15 goals in a one-sided grand final.

By Cindy Nutley in the Handicap section to claim the major award from the local pairing of Andrew Huntly and Richard Hutchison who finished equally impressive on 46 points. The Sydney pairing of Paul Fabian and Rolf Schufft of the Pennant Hills Golf Club claimed the Bradman’s trophy.

The Parkes Mensland Long Drive Championship saw Duntryleague’s Tyson Lane claim the award with a drive that finished some 265 metres from the teeing ground.
