Historic Day For Six New Citizens Mayor Ken Keith welcomed six new Australian citizens at a citizenship ceremony held in the Parkes Council chambers on Tuesday.

The Mayor read a welcome message from Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton, in which he said: “Thank you for taking this important step today.

Australian citizenship confers on you great benefits; but equally rights and obligations.”

The six new citizens are from Malaysia, Fiji, India and Italy. Clarence Goh, Yee Wern The and their son Christopher came from Malaysia in January 2011. They moved from Melbourne to Parkes in July 2015. Clarence teaches at the Christian School and enjoys making computer games, robot assembly and programming, while Yee is a keen photographer.

Aruna Swamy arrived in Australia in 2006

from Fiji and moved to Parkes in August 2008. She loves all things Bollywood.

Aswin Rajendran is originally from India and arrived in Australia in February 2012, and relocated to Trundle in September of the same year. He works as a registered Nurse and enjoys watching cricket, movies and farming.

Franco Tiveron came from Italy to Australia in January 2012 and settled in Parkes straight away with his wife and two sons.

He is an engineer and enjoys music and software.

“I congratulate these candidates on their decision to become Australian citizens,” said the Mayor. Each candidate received an official citizenship certificate, a Bible, Parkes Shire Council pen, Australian Citizenship coin and a Parkes booklet.

COUNCIL MESSAGE More than 130 students from Parkes East Public School had the opportunity to learn about Council’s role in the community during an outdoor, interactive lesson. Council workers did a lesson across the road from the school where they have been constructing a pipeline for the new Water Treatment Plant. Students learned about worksite safety, environmental awareness and careers at Council, before getting behind the wheel of a stationary piece of machinery for hands on learning. (See photo on page 7.)

The wet weather couldn’t dampen the fun at the 30th anniversary of the Trundle Bush Tucker Day with the live performance by Troy Cassar-Daley the highlight of the day.

Congratulations to the organising committee delivering such a great event.

Parkes residents are encouraged to enroll in this summer’s Learn to Swim Programs.

Parkes Shire Council will run the Learn to Swim programs for the first time at the pool.

The 10-week term kicks off on 10th October for all ages and abilities. Enrolment details can be found on Council’s website www. parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Residents will take to the polls tomorrow for the Local Government Elections. Prepoll voting in the Coventry Room in Bogan Street ends today at 6pm. Residents can vote for five or more candidates.

A number of roads have been closed due to heavy downfalls and flooding. Council urges motorists to avoid flood waters. For a current list of road closures visit Council’s website.

Dear Editor, I’d like to thank all our supporters including the committee, volunteers, the Quota ladies, our sponsors and The Parkes Phoenix.

We unfortunately had to abandon our last race meeting as the track was deemed to be unsafe for the horses and jockeys. The track was inspected twice by the NSW Racing Stewards from Dubbo with the hope that we might have been able to race, but this was not so.

We were looking forward to our local trainers having a run. One local trainer, Sarah Mcilrick, was hoping to have her first official race start.

We are racing again in January. One of our most popular meetings is the Australia Day Meeting, which we are looking forward to conducting. Hopefully it won’t be washed out.

So once again, I’d like to thank all our supporters and look forward to seeing everyone trackside next year.

QUESTION of the week What does Australian citizenship mean to you?

The wind and strings sections of the Lachlan Community Orchestra at the annual concert of the Parkes Shire Concert Band on Sunday.

Music for everyone: The Lachlan Community Orchestra (LCO) played in the Parkes Shire Concert Band’s annual concert for the community on Sunday.

It was the second year LCO took part in the concert. The concert ended with the LCO and the Parkes Shire Concert Band playing Amazing Grace together with Duncan, the Shire Band leader on the bagpipes.

The LCO is a friendly group of about 30 players from around the Parkes area.

Some members drive from Orange, Condobolin, Peak Hill and Trundle to be at the weekly rehearsal on a Tuesday afternoon at the AOG Church Hall in Parkes. Ben Macpherson from Orange is the conductor. The majority of players are under 20, and the remaining few over 50! Any new players are welcome. Please contact the Mitchell Conservatorium, Lachlan Campus on 6857 3266 if you are interested.

The LCO has two more concerts this month: The Mitchell Conservatorium Annual Scholarship concert on Friday, 16th September at 6:30pm at the Parkes Christian School Hall; the LCO concert on Sunday, 18th September at 3pm in the Forbes Town Hall.

Tax help in NSW: Tax Time 2016 is well underway and the Australian Tax Office has opened up its Tax Help centres in community centres across NSW. Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte said that about 300 volunteers from 240 community centres across NSW would be supporting people who needed assistance completing their tax returns this year.

“Tax Help is a free and confidential service provided by ATO-trained and accredited local volunteers.”

“Tax Help volunteers can help you complete a simple tax return online with myTax, claim a refund of franking credits, or notify the ATO if you don’t need to lodge a tax return at all,” said Graham.

The Tax Help service is for people earning around $50,000 or less each year with straightforward tax affairs. People who are interested in preparing their own tax return can also try out myTax before heading to a Tax Help centre.

Tax Help is available until 31 October in all capital cities and many regional areas across Australia. To find out if you are eligible, go to www.ato.gov.au/taxhelp. September is Fruit and Veg Month and parents are urged to follow the example children are setting at school this month to make vegetables funky in the family.

Cancer Council NSW’s flagship nutrition program Eat It To Beat It is getting behind the Healthy Kids Association initiative, encouraging parents of primary school aged children to take the lessons being taught in the classroom and act on them at home.

Fruit & Veg Month 2016, with its theme, vegetables are funky, works through classrooms to put a positive focus on fruit and vegetables.

The initiative aims to remind kids why fruit and veg are so good for their health, increase the amount and variety of fruit and veg that students eat and encourage kids to try new fruit and vegetables.

Eat It To Beat It Program Coordinator, Fiona Markwick said parents could take the lesson home too.

“Add fruit and veg to the lunch box and in meals and snacks at home and you’ll be well on your way to helping your kids set up healthy habits for life,” she said.

Getting kids involved in everything from shopping, to menu planning and growing vegetables at home was another great way to get the family behind healthy eating.

“Spring is a great time to plant a vegie patch, or sample some new season fruit and veg,” Fiona said.

“Getting kids involved is also a great way to entice fussy eaters.”

Eat It To Beat It offers free workshops in Western NSW to parents of primary school aged children showing them how easy it can be to pack a healthy lunch box and incorporate more fruit and vegetables in family meals.

Beautiful Bowls

Weaving artist Lanny Mackenzie from Orange presented a weaving workshop at the Parkes Shire Library on Sunday.

The group of 15 had a great day working through morning tea and lunch to create their projects.

Lanny primarily uses natural and recycled reclaimed materials. Participants used waxed linen, coconut husk twine and raffia, and experimented with branches, lavender, grasses, palm tree materials, shells and other items to finish off their bowls.

Council Elections 2016

Meet your Candidates The Election Is On In The Parkes Shire The election is on in the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shires and you will be fined if you do not vote in tomorrow’s Local Government Elections.

This simple and clear warning came from Parkes Mayor Ken Keith who said there was some confusion among residents as about half of the 70 odd councils in NSW were not in the election because of amalgamation issues and court cases. He said the approximately 9,000 eligible voters in the Parkes Shire needed to get to a polling station tomorrow.

The Mayor also wants to alert voters to a very important detail that has caused some confusion during pre-polling. There is a requirement that you have to vote for a minimum of five candidates otherwise your ballot will be invalid.

“Some people misunderstood and thought

they were only allowed to vote for five candidates. I would really like to encourage voters to choose their number one candidate, but to choose another ten to 15 preferences as these could be really important in the final determination of the outcome,” he said.

Twenty candidates will be contesting for the ten Parkes Shire Councillor positions.

The Mayor also encouraged voters who might be affected by flooding tomorrow, to get to the pre-polling station in the Coventry Room today to vote.

Voting tomorrow will be between 8am and 6pm with pollings stations at the Alectown Hall, Bogan Gate Public School, the Peak Hill, Trundle and Tullamore Central schools, and in Parkes at Middleton Public School, Assemblies of God Hall, Parkes East Public School, and the Little Theatre.

I’m attracted to the non-political nature of the council where councillors work together as a team for the benefit of the residents.

I have worked in media and communications for over thirty years in Australia and overseas, married to Ana for more than 20 years and have two adult children. I have a keen interest in the arts and culture and established the Parkes Film Society serving as President for three years and developed the inaugural Parkes Film Festival.

I would like to continue the good work council has achieved and see Parkes prosper through diversifying its economy

and give more employment opportunities for the youth in the area . Projects such as the inland rail project I fully support and can offer a tremendous boost for the local economy when implemented.

Working overseas in rural communities in media development I understand well the aspirations and challenges they face. Regardless of the location, the need for better resources, strong local economies, access to quality health services, employment, education and communications are commonalities we all desire.

I hope with my experience I can make a contribution to these goals by serving on the council. I seek your support and thank you for your consideration.

Do Not Enter Restricted Sites

Parkes Shire Council has issued another warning about the dangers of entering the old Parkes hospital site and other restricted sites. Council has handed over responsibility of the old hospital to contractor Byrne Demolition to undertake the demolition of the buildings.

“In undertaking this work, intensive reviews and planning has been done to ensure the safe removal and disposal of any potentially hazardous materials within a controlled and safe environment,” said Ben Howard, Parkes Shire Council’s Director of Engineering. “Major safety concerns have been raised following a number of breakins at the site. There has been a great deal of vandalism in recent months, which may have exposed hazardous materials.

“The main concern is that those who are gaining unlawful entry into the site are exposing themselves to dangers. These dangers are not just confined to hazardous materials but all risks associated with the project. These include mobile plant and equipment hazards, unstable ground conditions, rubble and debris stock piles just to name a few,” Ben said.

These warnings do not only apply to the old hospital site, but all restricted worksites, such as the Water Treatment and Sewage Treatment Plants, and other private worksites. Tuckered Out, Not Rained Out

More than a thousand festival-goers made it through hell and high-water for the Bush Tucker Day at Trundle last weekend. With roads flooded across the region, there were fears that the annual festival would be washed out, but the scores of intrepid travellers proved that nothing could rain on this parade.

Festival president Donald “Digger” Anderson said he was thrilled with the turnout. While they were expecting double the crowd, the numbers weren’t that far off last year’s turn-out. “Even with everything stacked against us, it was still a hugely successful event,” he said, “and it’s only possible thanks to the dedicated committee and volunteers”.This year marked the 30th anniversary of the festival, which is held on the first Saturday in September.

It began as a grass-roots, family focused fundraiser for local charities, and is now a major highlight on the region’s calendar.

Digger suggested the entertainment is the

key to its growing success. What started off as a cook-out has evolved to be a jampacked day of family-fun, with a lot of people coming to see the show.

Country music legend Troy Cassar-Daley was a popular inclusion in this year’s lineup. “When the music started you could really see the full extent of the crowd,” Digger said. “Usually the crowd stirs up a bit of dust, but this year it was clear as a bell, thanks to all that rain.” While some events were called off due to stranding, there was still plenty to keep the festival-goers amused, with loads of country-themed shenanigans, such as the hilarious bushman’s relay, the billy boiling competition, and whip-cracking and sheep sheering demonstrations. But let’s not forget the food.

With bush cooking competitions, demonstrations, and free taste testing, Trundle was well and truly tuckered out.

Author Shares Her Story with Parkes About 30 local book lovers and aspiring writers came to hear author Karen Viggers discuss her journey to becoming a novelist on Tuesday. The talk was hosted by the Parkes Shire Library, and is just one of the events scheduled for the Curiosity + Wonder Festival that takes place throughout September.

Although Karen was always a keen scribe, her writing success came after a lengthy detour down a completely different career path, where she became a veterinarian and earned a PhD. She told the audience how her work with wildlife took her to exotic lo-

cations, such as Antarctica, and involved some not-so exotic duties, such as castrating kangaroos.

But she credits a childhood spent riding horses as giving her key novelist skills. Her wild pony taught her courage, persistence and resilience; all essential qualities to a budding author. “Not only does it take immense courage to write, you have to be open to criticism, even after being published,” she said.

Karen shared her experience with rejection from a publisher, saying that even once her manuscript was finally met with

offers, she had to delete one third of it. “If you don’t work with publishers you won’t get published,” she said. “Rewrites are a painful but necessary part of the writing process.”

The writing process for Karen’s latest novel, ‘The Grass Castle’ took three years, but the inspiration first struck at least ten years ago when visiting the Brindabella Ranges.

“Sometimes it takes a while for the story to form,” Karen said. “There is often a long germination, and a lot of composting, before ideas take root and grow into something”.

No Rain Checks On Rain With 64.8mm of rain recorded in the first four days of September in Parkes and more than 20mm forecast for today, the wet is not going to go away very soon and more flooding could be expected.

If you are planning any road trips or outings for the weekend, it would be wise to check on road closures and conditions before leaving.

Several roads were closed during the week and might still be closed for the weekend.

You can keep up to date using www.livetraffic.com or Parkes Shire Council’s social media pages for the latest information on road closures.

Parkes Shire Council has urged all motorists to exercise extreme caution when

travelling in the wet weather. “Please avoid walking or driving through flood waters, as it may be deeper and faster flowing than anticipated. Additionally, the road may have suffered extensive damage hidden beneath the water.”

The Forbes community was on moderate flood warning during the week, with the Red Bend College closing on Wednesday in anticipation of flooding. The Lachlan River peaked at 10.35m at the Iron Bridge on Wednesday slightly under the level of 10.55m recorded in the 2012 flood. The SES and volunteers filled thousands of sandbags to be distributed to properties in low-lying areas.

Spacecats In Grand Final! Alana’s Hard The Spacecats scored a vital 24 – 10 win over the Forbes Magpies on Sunday to secure a place in the Group XI Grand Final.

It was a happy Father’s Day for the Spacecats as the last team to fly the Parkes banner high and proud as their drive for a spot in the final proved to be greater than rivals Forbes.

Forbes started the clock with a great kick and Parkes making great ground through five sets of hands to allow Demi Winter to put the first points on the board.

Next points came from a successful penalty by Claire Barber to take Parkes’ lead to 6.

Forbes came back five and a half minutes before the break to level the scores, but was soon answered by Parkes scoring with under a minute remaining of the first half.

In the second half Forbes scored the first points, but Captain Hannah Kelly put in a great kick that Forbes knocked on 5 metres from the try line. Spacecats made the most of the Magpies error and Shayna Male

broke through the Forbes defence with Claire adding the extras to put Spacecats in an 18 – 10 lead.

A Magpies penalty allowed the Parkes tally to go up by another 4, and Claire, with another awesome strike took Parkes to 24.

This last 6.5 minutes was the most physical a non contact sport can get with the Spacecats playing well until the sound of the full time bell.

Work Pays Off

Alana Ryan was officially presented with her National C Badge, which she was tested for in May 2016.

Alana has worked very hard and shown great commitment to her umpiring over the last few years, and was given very positive comments by State umpire coaches at the NSW State Age Championships in July.

Since receiving her badge, Alana has continued to improve her umpiring and has started to help coach the younger aspiring umpires.

Parkes and District Netball Association would like to congratulate Alana on this wonderful achievement, and wishes her all the best in her umpiring in years to come.

Busy Time For Golfers As last weekend’s golf was washed out, the rest of the month promises to be very busy starting with the Bob Smith Memorial Golf Day tomorrow for men and women, while the rescheduled Pybar Handicap Challenge final will take place on Sunday.

The following week, the annual SCT Logistics Parkes Open Tournament takes place and on Saturday, 24th September the men get to play the washed out Telescope Tyres & Batteries September Monthly Medals sponsored by Tony Williams Chartered Accountants. The Ladies will play a 4 Ball Multiplier for Kay Jones trophies on the same weekend, and rounding out September, commencing on Monday 26th, is the Atlas Copco Australia Parkes Veterans Week of Golf.

Members are reminded of the Special General Meeting starting at 5.30pm tomorrow for the election of a new Club President after the unfortunate resignation of

Ross Smith from the position. Members are urged to attend to celebrate the appointment of a new President.

The Club will conduct a Rules Night, in conjunction with Golf NSW, on Wednesday, 14th September at 6.30pm to discuss rules that affect the every day golfer. Bookings are required.

Tomorrow the men and women will contest an 18 hole 2Ball Medley Stableford with 9 and 18 hole individual events to be run in conjunction. The day will be in honor of the late R.L. (Bob) Smith with Michael Smith and family members sponsoring the day.

The Pybar Handicap Challenge is on Sunday at 9am. The match committee have ruled that players who accepted for last weekend will have the first opportunity to play, but they must confirm to the Club Captain on 0427 624 683 by 5pm today.
